Studios at Elstree Elstree was a major centre for film production from the early days of cinema. There’s a great deal of confusion about which studios at Elstree were used for which movies / TV shows.

This page covers  BBC Elstree Centre  (also known as Clarendon Road Studios, Neptune Studios, Rock Studios, National Studios, ATV Studios, Central TV Studios).  The location has been used for movie / TV production since 1914 and has been the home of BBC Soap ‘Eastenders’ since 1985 (see below)

Unfortunately there are  no public tours of the Eastenders Sets or of the studio itself at any time .

This gritty and groundbreaking BBC soap opera has been based at the BBC Elstree Centre since day one back in 1985. The soap is based in the fictional London borough of Walford in the east end. The Albert Square permanent exterior set was designed by the late Keith Harris, the senior designer in the EastEnders production team. Extensions including a fictional Tube station have been added over the years. In 2014 it was announced that a new, 20% larger exterior set would be built for EastEnders, within the BBC Elstree Centre grounds. Following planning permission, construction work took place in 2015 & 2016 to prepare the new site. Although it was originally planned to have the new sets operational by 2018, it’s now believed that part of the set will be available from 2019, with the entire development not complete until 2020.

Tours of EastEnders:

Unfortunately there are no public tours of the Eastenders Sets or of the studio itself at any time . This has never been possible due to the production schedule and additional security concerns. Please do not contact this website about tours, as there are none available. Some BBC facilities offer tours (but NOT this location) so please check the BBC Tours website for more information.

History of the BBC Elstree Centre site

Percy Nash and John East, early British filmmakers, built Neptune Studios at Boreham Wood, near Elstree village. Although conveniently close to London, it was far enough away from the metropolis that the air was clear of smog and traffic fumes. One of the stages was over 70 feet in length and was described as the first ‘dark’ stage in Europe as it had no glazed roof and relied totally on artificial illumination.

Neptune Studios closes due to World War 1, and the site is bought by the Ideal Film Company.

Ideal Films moves out of the premises.

Ludwig Blattner, inventor of an early sound recording system, took over the studios, making them the last in the Elstree area to be converted for sound recording.

The studios are leased by Joe Rock, an American producer, the same year as Blattner committed suicide.

Joe Rock buys the studios outright (now known as  Rock Studios ) and constructs the four main stages, still in use today as studios A-D. This major investment ensured the future use of the studios for many years to come.

The Rock Studios are taken over by  British National Films , and almost immediately, the studios are taken over by the government for war dutues. After the war British National Films continued to make films on the site, now known as  National Studios .

The studios go dark for five years.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr buys the studios. He uses the four stages to make filmed TV programmes for the American company NBC. His initial contract was for an astonishing 39 films as well as many commercials. Many of the short films made for the US market were shown in the UK as part of  Douglas Fairbanks Presents  from 1955 .

May: Lew Grade’s  ATV  purchases the former National Film Studios.

One by one the four studios are brought into use as (at the time) state-of-the-art television studios. Many classic TV series used the ATV facilities:  Robin Hood ,  Lancelot ,  The Saint  (with Roger Moore),  The Persuaders  and TV specials for stars such as Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones. Later,  The Muppet Show started life here, along with  Emergency Ward 10 ,  The Plane Makers ,  The Power Game ,  Sergeant Cork ,  The Golden Shot  (game show),  Sapphire and Steel ,  Tiswas  (Saturday morning kids show) and the first 13 episodes of  Carry on Laughing .

ATV lost it’s London TV franchise and was reshaped into Central TV. Central remained at Elstree while their new facilities in Nottingham were constructed. Many staff (and much equipment) moved to Nottingham when the studios there were finished.  Auf Wiedersehen Pet  filmed at the studio in the meantime.

16th January – The official documents are signed, transferring ownership of the site to the BBC, and it’s renamed  The BBC Elstree Centre . Popular BBC shows including  Grange Hill ,  Top of the Pops  and  Kilroy  move to the new site. The backlot area formerly used as the  Auf Wiedersehen Pet  building site is used to construct the exterior Albert Square sets for  EastEnders .

19 February:  Eastenders  debuts on BBC1 television, and the Albert Square sets are seen for the first time.

Holby City , a spin-off of BBC medical drama  Casualty  (filmed in Bristol) starts filming at Elstree, using Neptune House, one of the existing BBC office buildings, as the hospital.

The Times reports that Eastenders may shift production to another location (e.g. Pinewood Studios) due to the deteriorating quality of the 25 year old sets at Elstree. The original sets were never designed for this length of run, and under the unforgiving HD cameras, the fake brickwork and wooden walls are beginning to be very obvious. >  Link to The Times article

Eastenders is to remain at Elstree ‘for the foreseeable future’, with sets being upgraded when necessary.

Work is underway to prepare a new site slightly east of the existing location for an expanded Albert Square, with higher quality sets, some of which may be practical. Build cost is believed to be £15million. > Link to The Guardian article about the move > Link to Metro article about delays to the work

The BBC begins the process of selling the studio property to French insurance company Axa. A 25-year lease will be in place for the BBC to lease back part of the facilities to continue to film there. The purchase is due to complete in 2024.  > Link to Financial Times article about the sale

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Where is EastEnders filmed and can you visit?

A comp of the EastEnders set and characters including Peggy and Phil Mitchell

EastEnders has become one of the most ubiquitous shows on our screens since it first aired in 1985.

And it’s not just the characters and storylines that have kept us watching – but also the famous setting of Walford and Albert Square, both of which have become synonymous with the soap as the Mitchells and the Beales.

Walford is, of course, a fictional part of London ’s East End – and Albert Square itself is fictional, too.

So, since its setting doesn’t really exist, just where exactly is the soap filmed? And can you visit the set?

Here’s what you need to know.

Where is EastEnders filmed?

The BBC One soap isn’t filmed out and about like many TV shows are, but has its own purpose-built set at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.

A new, £87 million set at Elstree has been in the works for years, but will finally appear on screens in April 2022 – with the cast having begun filming t h e r e in January 2022 .

The upgraded set is wider, made of real brick and has an aged look to it – though there are new areas and a lick of paint for old favourites such as Beale’s Plaice and The Queen Vic pub.

Chinese restaurant Eastern Blossom, painted in a lovely yellow, is on one of the lot’s new roads – and you can also see the garages and gardens at the back of residents’ houses.

Former producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins first announced plans to refresh the set in 2014, saying: ‘It should feel more like London. It’s been frozen in aspic for too long…

‘You’ll see the edges of Shoreditch creeping into EastEnders. It’s got to reflect the modern world.’

Originally, the set was due to be built by 2018, with the estimated budget put at £60 million or so – but it was revealed that year that work had gone £27m over budget.

Fans were given a sneak preview update about the new set in 2021 , when it was close to being completed.

Where did EastEnders film before the new set was done?

While the current set is brand new, the soap has filmed at Elstree since 1985 – with the original set built in 1984 with the specification that it should last at least 15 years.

Both the interior and exterior scenes are filmed on the set, with the initial set-upconsisting of three sides of Albert Square.

The fourth was added in 1986, while further addition Turpin Road arrived in 1987, and Tube station Walford East was added in 1993.

A general view of the Queen Victoria Pub 'The Queen Vic'. Programme Name: EastEnders - TX: n/a - Episode: Generics (No. n/a) - Picture Shows: Albert Square - (C) BBC - Photographer: Jack Barnes

Back in 2008, it was reported that filming was set to transfer to the famous Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

Alas, by 2010 it had been confirmed that Elstree would remain the home of EastEnders for a number of years – and the set underwent another rebuild.

During this particular rebuild, scaffolding was often seen on the set, with some storylines – such as the Queen Vic fire – reportedly written into the show to accommodate this.

Can you visit the set of EastEnders?

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to visit the EastEnders set – as much fun as it would be.

Unlike ITV rival Coronation Street, which offers weekend tours when the soap’s not being filmed, the EastEnders set is not open to the public due to the production schedule.

The exterior of Walford East station on the set of EastEnders

To be fair, it would be a bit strange to see a guided tour happening in the background of an episode…

EastEnders airs from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One, with recent episodes available on iPlayer.

Where is EastEnders’ new set and can you visit?

  • Published : 17:01, 13 May 2020
  • Updated : 17:44, 15 May 2020

EASTENDERS is currently in the middle of building an entire new £87million set only a few yards from the old one.

The project has come under fire for being expected to go over budget by a staggering £27 million as well as taking two and a half years extra to complete - so why was the new set necessary in the first place? Here’s everything you need to know...

  • Visit our dedicated EastEnders page for all the latest spoilers, pictures and gossip from Albert Square

EastEnders is building a new set

Where is the EastEnders new set?

The new EastEnders set is being built at the BBC's Elstree Centre in Borehamwood , opposite the current one used on screen.

EastEnders showed fans a glimpse of the new Queen Vic in April, which is finally taking shape on the corner of the Square.

The new updated set will also include additions to the Square including a block of flats as well as a railway tunnel and line for the famous Walford East tube station.

The new set will replace the show's original one, which was built in 1984 from steel frames, plywood and plaster brick panels.

The new EastEnders set is opposite the old set

Why have BBC made a new set?

BBC bosses took on the mammoth task of building a new set to make Walford HD-ready.

The current set was built back when the show originally launched in 1984 and was only intended to be used for two years.

The current set is stopping EastEnders from filming in HD as show bosses fear viewers would notice that the fronts of the Queen Vic and its surrounding buildings are made of plaster and plywood.

The HD set’s buildings will be made entirely out of brick, but look identical to the old ones.

The BBC said in a statement: "The set of EastEnders was built in 1984 and only intended for use for two years.

"Over 30 years later, the show remains one of the BBC’s flagship programmes and yet is filming from a set that is no longer fit for purpose.

"The new set will be suitable for HD filming for the first time and extend Walford to better reflect modern East End London."

Can you visit.

Due to the soap’s filming schedule - which was four 30-minute episodes prior to coronavirus - there have previously been no tours of the EastEnders sets or of the studio.

And given that the current home of EastEnders in Elstree isn’t accessible to the general public, it seems unlikely that the new set will be.

EastEnders have announced that the set, which was originally supposed to be completed by 2018, won't be ready until around 2023, s o fans will have to wait a few years for more news on potential visits.

Would highly recommend the tour with its new additions including the precinct, police station, exhibition of artefacts and replicas of the interior of the Rovers Return and Roy’s Rolls.

Our guide Sid was excellent – amusing and very informative. All the staff we came across were enthusiastic and friendly.

We had a lovely time, our guide Daniel was brilliant, very informative about the show past and present. We loved our time there had plenty of opportunities for photos, I enjoyed the exhibition at the end seeing all the outfits from characters and the rovers and Roy’s rolls set up. Fantastic would highly recommend.

The Coronation Street tour is great for fans of the show. You get to walk along the famous cobbles and see the outside sets. We chose to go on a star tour and met Andy Whyment who plays Kirk. It was good to see some peices from the set too. Our tour guide Callum was very knowledgeable and made our tour enjoyable. We would definitely recommend this tour.

The actor, who plays Martin Fowler in the BBC One soap, has been cast as The Prince in the musical version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre.

Award-winning pantomime director Chris Nelson is at the helm of this song-filled version of Snow White, with former Family Fortunes presenter Andy Collins signed up to play Muddles the Court Jester.

Tickets are available right now for £13.00 (subject to a transaction fee of £3.80) for shows scheduled to run from Friday, December 1, 2023, through January 3, 2024.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be running a matinee and an evening performance for most of that month-long run, but be sure to check the event calendar for the full rundown .

Here's how producers describe the panto: "Star cast, barrels of laughter, stunning sets, dazzling costumes, spectacular dance and maybe, just maybe, a bad apple or two, make this a Christmas tradition for all the family.

"A traditional family pantomime full of audience participation and laughter."

This panto version of the classic fairytale follows its traditional story: an evil queen chases the beautiful Snow White to a forest cottage inhabited by seven dwarves.

However, the big twist is that the panto version is filled with contemporary hits remade for Snow White, including songs by Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, among others.

Celtics star Al Horford (L) jogs toward teammate Jayson Tatum to high five him.

The Boston Celtics can breathe easy for a minute.

On Wednesday, May 15, Joe Mazzulla’s top-seeded squad defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-98 in Game 5 of their second-round series to advance to the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals.

Stars Jayson Tatum and Al Horford led the way with high-scoring efforts, dropping 25 and 22 points respectively in Game 5.

Next up, the Celtics will face either the Knicks or Pacers , depending on how their ongoing Semifinals series shakes out; as of now, New York has a 3-2 advantage going into Game 6 in Indianapolis.

When that game at TD Garden takes place is still to be determined.

However, if you can’t wait to get your hands on tickets to see the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals — for the third consecutive season (!) — you can snag them as soon as today.

At the time of publication, Game 1 tickets can be found for as low as $259 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Game 2 seats are a bit pricier; they start at $305 before fees .

While that may sound expensive, it’s hard to put a price on playoff basketball.

Need a bit more information before checking out?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about the Celtics and the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Why are ticket prices for the hottest concerts in Milwaukee and elsewhere skyrocketing?

eastenders tour tickets 2022

The concert industry is bigger than it's ever been — and for the top stars' concerts, ticket prices are, too.

If you want to see folk-pop sensation Noah Kahan at Alpine Valley Music Theatre July 13, you’ll have to pay $359.50 for a ticket, or more than $300 for a resale seat through StubHub for lawn access in the back of the outdoor East Troy venue.

In February 2023, when Kahan headlined the Miller High Life Theatre in Milwaukee, tickets cost only $32.50 for general-admission seating. And at Summerfest last June, you could have seen him with a $26 Summerfest general-admission ticket — or for free if you took advantage of a promo deal.

Zach Bryan also played Summerfest last year, at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater. Tickets, which included festival admission July 7, ranged from $68.17 to $476.70. But the starting prices for remaining tickets for Bryan's Fiserv Forum concert just eight months later, on March 20, start at $330.

And then there’s Olivia Rodrigo.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

For the 21-year-old’s "Guts" tour stop at Fiserv Forum Saturday, access codes were required to purchase tickets. Those who weren't randomly selected to get the codes either have to skip the show or buy them through resale sites — where they start at $201 for an obstructed-view seat through reseller Vivid Seats, and $781 for pit access.

When Rodrigo played the Eagles Ballroom at the Rave in 2022, resale tickets for the general-admission show started around $189.

"If there's a limited supply, people have a fear of missing out and want to buy those tickets," said Gary Witt, CEO of Milwaukee venue operator and events promoter Pabst Theater Group. "People have shown they will spend a significant amount of money on artists they want to see."

And many of the most popular artists, capitalizing on that demand and to cover their own rising costs, are becoming increasingly comfortable with charging a premium.

Concert industry broke records — thanks in part to rising ticket prices

The concert industry had a record box-office haul in 2023. The top 100 tours worldwide made $9.17 billion, according to concert trade magazine Pollstar, a 46% increase from 2022. Ticket sales for the top 100 tours were up 18.4% according to Pollstar, and the average number of tickets sold for the biggest shows increased 24.25%.

"Live experiences already held a big value with our patrons and artists and fans. Coming out of the pandemic, it's even more so now," said Charlie Goldstone, co-president of Madison-based, Live Nation-backed promoter FPC Live, which is behind Rodrigo's show in Milwaukee.

Average ticket prices are higher, too, up 23.3%, from $106.07 to $130.81, Pollstar reported.

As a result, concert ticketing has come under more scrutiny.

The backlash was so harsh over ticket price increases for Bruce Springsteen's 2023 tour that long-running Springsteen tribute magazine Backstreets shut down in protest. And the ticket-buying process for the first dates of Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour" last year was such a fiasco that it triggered a congressional hearing.

But Springsteen and Swift are veteran artists with deep, treasured discographies. Sky-high prices and unprecedented demand weren't all that surprising, especially coming out of the concert-crushing pandemic.

What's happening with Kahan, Bryan and Rodrigo is more unexpected. All three are newer artists who have all been on multiple tours, and have played other Milwaukee concerts since 2022.

That tickets are so hard to come by, and for prices to rise so steeply, is a staggering development.

"Artists are creating new fans every month and new superstars are created every year," Goldstone said. "Fans will go to a show, have an amazing time, and want to go to more shows."

Rodrigo and Bryan helped fuel that demand with new albums ahead of their returns to Milwaukee. Both of their albums debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and generated No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Kahan is still touring in support of his 2022 album "Stick Season," but since his Summerfest show he's released two expanded versions of the album, and collaborative songs with Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, Hozier and even Bryan. His Summerfest show was one of the most packed performances ever on a grounds stage at the festival — with many of those fans, and those who missed out, behind heavy sales for the Alpine concert.

"If you don't get tickets to a Bucks playoff game, you can watch at home or a sports bar and be with other big fans," said FPC Live co-president Scott Leslie. "People have a different kind of relationship with artists than other entertainers. Whether it's the lyrical connection or whatever else, it's individual for everybody, and where the demand comes from is being in the room with them for those two hours. That is not something that is able to be replaced, and that is why demand is so much crazier."

Spending habits, rising costs and demand fuel concert price increases

In addition to pandemic concert deprivation fueling demand, Witt suspects spending habits are shifting, too.

“The average home buyer age is 49 vs. the average age of a buyer being 31 in 2008,” Witt noted. “Quite a few people of those age groups in the past that used to save are not saving those dollars. … Concerts are very much a place where people are putting some money they used to save to buy their first home.

“The high demand creates a surge and, of course, there’s a limited supply.”

And ticket demand has become so great for the Swifts and Springsteens of the world — and even the Rodrigos and Bryans and Kahans — that satisfying it is difficult.

“Touring is hard physically, touring is hard logistically, it’s hard mentally,” Goldstone said. “Taylor Swift could have done 10 times as many shows and they’d sell out, but people have limits of what can be physically done, and that creates scarcity and, with that, the price increases.”

“No artist can work seven days a week,” Leslie echoed. “Everyone needs nights off, and there are costs associated by the tour that accrue on nights off."

The costs that go into a show are higher, too, Witt said.

"It costs more to lease a bus now, it costs more to put artists on the road, hotel prices are more — in addition to a greater amount of technology on the road, more than ever before," he said.

Artists have a hand in higher ticket prices, too

But tickets for many top-tier concerts are also going up because artists want them to go up, said Dave Brooks, senior director of live and touring for Billboard.

"Tours are finding out that they can charge more," he said. "Fans are willing to pay more for high-demand shows. They are willing to pay more for the artists that they like and want to see, and they really value that experience."

"In a lot of cases, if (the artists) don't charge what the market will bear, it just creates an opportunity for scalpers," he continued. "Any artist that can outsell demand is going to push prices."

That was Springsteen's justification when he was asked about ticket price increases by Rolling Stone magazine last year.

"The ticket broker or someone is going to be taking that money," Springsteen suggested if he continued pricing tickets "under market value" as he had in the past. "I’m going, 'Hey, why shouldn’t that money go to the guys that are going to be up there sweating three hours a night for it?'"

Affordable concert options still persist

Brooks predicted that there'll be an elite tier of artists — perhaps as many as 30 — for whom high demand will continue to push up ticket prices.

But he also predicted "a much larger middle tier that will be more in tune with people's sensitivities with pricing."

"Most of the shows don't sell out," Goldstone said. "Most of the shows that happen are not in the biggest venues in town. Most are at smaller venues where ticket prices are more affordable."

To emphasize that point, the Pabst Theater Group last year started promoting shows on a special "Tickets Under $30" webpage. Veteran local concert promoter and Shank Hall owner Peter Jest makes sure there are options for two tickets to sell for $100, fees included, for theater shows he's promoting.

And then sometimes music fans can get lucky and save money on a big concert. When tickets initially went on sale for Travis Scott's Fiserv Forum show in January, tickets started at $56.50. But sales were sluggish, and prices for those cheapest seats dropped $20 by the morning of the show. One resale ticket was priced as low as $18.

The best tickets for “a class of artists will be expensive and, unfortunately, not everybody as a fan will afford that … ," Goldstone said. "Ultimately, we all want to get the most amount of people in a room. The ultimate goal is making sure tickets are priced so that happens."

What goes into the price of a concert ticket?

Why does a concert ticket for a major artist cost what it costs anyway?

Contrary to some beliefs, ticket sellers like oft-maligned Ticketmaster don't set the price, FPC Live's Goldstone said. The artists' teams do, although Billboard's Brooks said Ticketmaster and other ticket sellers can use algorithmic pricing tools, like dynamic pricing, "to incentivize artists to charge more."

"The lion's share of the money (from a sold ticket) goes to the artist, but it doesn't all go to the artist's bank account … ," FPC Live's Leslie said. "They have expenses, too, from semi-truck rentals to bus rentals to drivers to crew members."

Artist payments make up the base for the ticket price. But often there are fees — increasingly figured into a ticket's price upfront — that generally amount to a 20% to 30% surcharge, Brooks said. The ticket seller collects a small part of that surcharge, but most of it goes to the venue and the promoter to cover the physical cost of the concert.

But who gets what from a concert isn't always clear cut, Brooks said. That's especially the case when the players might include Live Nation, the world's largest concert promoter and venue operator; Live Nation-supported, independently operated promoters, like FPC Live; and Ticketmaster, the world's largest ticket seller, which Live Nation owns.

In a lot of cases, Brooks said, promoters might get rebates from concert venue fees to incentivize more bookings. And "from the money that goes to the artist, the artist might pay 5% to 10% to the promoter for certain services," Brooks said. "And the venue has its hand in the artist's money by charging artists to sell their merch."

"So everybody's got their hands in each other's pockets, and that drives the ticket price up," Brooks said.

With Live Nation coming under increased scrutiny, Brooks believes a primary objective for the company now is to "clean that up."
