Valencia Costa Blanca

El Vergel Safari Park, near Denia

Just beyond the town of Ondara on the Northern shoulder of the Costa Blanca, lays the infamous Vergel Safari Park. Less than one hours drive from central Benidorm, the Vergel Safari Park lies close to Ondara. With all of the typical animal favourites, attractions at the safari park include lions, tigers and wolves roaming free in wide open natural terrain, together with a small zoo area, miniature train rides, dolphin and seal shows, and a playground for small children.

Although the majority of the park is a strictly stay in your car zone, there is also a safer area where you can walk free amongst some of the less dangerous animals such as pigs, ponies and other domestic breeds. The park also has a reptile house, aviary, sea lion and parrot show where shows are put on several times per day.

Take note of the warnings though. Do not open your windows or leave the car – these animals are extremely dangerous.

Additionally there are go carts, mini trains, and childrens play areas, making this a great day out for all the family.

It is extremely well maintained and has excellent facilities including a restaurant, bars and a very good picnic area.

Discover the delights of the Animal Kingdom in a fun-packed environment: 35 hectares of land that is home to 1400 animals and 145 different species.

You can go round the park by car and have a choice of three routes to see herbivores, Bengal tigers and African lions. Alternately, you can walk around the open sections of the park, which are split into sections by theme: Iberian fauna, African birds, Asiatic and oceanic fauna, large herbivores etc., since the walkways are separated by canals or wooden barriers.

El Vergel Safari Park is located near Ondara and Pego, Costa Blanca North Ctra. CV 700 Vergel-Pego Km 65, 03770 El Vergel. Tlf: 966 439 808

The park should be little more than an hours drive from Alicante on the main A7 toll road (motorway). Alternatively you could take the N-332 coastal road towards Valencia, turning off at Pego on the C-311 just after Ondara.

El Vergel Safari Park CLOSED DOWN

After many years the El Vergel safari park closed down in late 2010.

Mapa Safari Park Vergel

El vergel safari park closes after 33 years.

FALLING NUMBERS of visitors and competition from more modern attractions have forced the closure of El Vergel Safari Park after 33 years. A trickle of cars arrived last Friday only to find gates were closed and be turned away from the once-popular attraction by security staff. One told RTN: “We are closed – everything is closed.” However, he confirmed keepers would be caring for some 460 animals over the next six months as they undergo health checks and found new homes under strict guideline covering their movement. The closure is a blow for locals who worked with animals or in the restaurant and bar. A once ground-breaking attraction on the Marina Alta, it allowed visitors to watch animals wandering ‘semi-wild’ in enclosures and boasted 1,400 animals of some 150 different species. The park covered half a million square metres close to Pego Marshes and also had an important collection of over 150 types of fauna. TUMBLE However, the number of tourists passing through the gates has tumbled from a golden age of 250,000 a year to fewer than 15,000. It is understood the safari park failed to keep pace with new attractions such as Terra Natura in Benidorm and Valencia’s L’Oceanografic and Bioparc. El Vergel allowed visitors to drive through the enclosures housing a menagerie of Bengal tigers, lions, water buffalo, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros, and 25 Vietnamese pigs. Other attractions included a sea lion show and a large aviary. The park also made news by taking part in breeding programmes for wild animals. However, El Vergel made international headlines for the wrong reasons in May 1999. Disregarding all warning notices, an elderly German couple got out of their car and were killed by three tigers.
A perfunctory “ Hereby we inform (you) of the indefinite closure of our facilities .Without further ado, Greetings” was the poignant and solitary message posted on Vergel Safari Parks website last Wednesday September 9, informing the world that after thirty three years the Park was to close its doors for the very last time. The recession and competition from other tourist attractions such as Terra Natura in Benidorm and Valencia’s Bioparc had all conspired to bring about the demise of one of the Costa Blanca favourite leisure destinations. Vergel Safari Park had been a pioneer on the Costa Blanca of the then new concept of housing animals in an environment close to their natural habitat as possible, and away from the more confined zoo concept. However, times move on and the newer facilities of the competitors and ever changing mores of the leisure industry, left behind the park struggling to keep up its visitor numbers which had plummeted a massive 80% over the last three years. The Park occupied some half a million square metres of land next to the Pego marsh, and was home to around one thousand four hundred animals covering one hundred and fifty species. Half of the Parks fifty employees have been made redundant with immediate effect, whilst the remaining staff are being kept on to continue caring for the animals over a six month period during which it is hoped they can all be successfully found new homes. The economic knock on effect to the Marina Alta area will be felt through the direct unemployment of the workers, and indirectly a drop in trade for the ancillary businesses that benefitted from the tourist influx into the area to visit the Park. In the long run perhaps the one thing the Park will be remembered for is the incident in 1999, when two German pensioners were killed by a tiger when they unwittingly left their vehicle, thinking they had left the secure area, when in fact they had merely passed from the lion’s enclosure through to that of the tigers. It would be a pity if this was the only legacy of the Park, which brought so many happy days out over three decades for families throughout the region.

Denia Things to Do

Denia is a small town, known for its proximity to Ibiza and Mallorca islands.

Denia Castle

The castle in Denia is the main attraction. It has three towers and an archeological museum where you could learn more about local history. The views from the castle are fascinating, a 360 degree view overlooking the port, the mountains and the city.

Les Roques, the area next to the Castle, is well worth seeing too. The streets are lovely to walk along. Salto, Olivera and San Francisco Streets are especially pleasant.

El Vergel Safari Park

This safari park and zoo is a 10 minute ride out of Denia. Through the first three sections, you will stay in your car and drive through different habitats. You can see emu, deer, lions, tigers and more from the safety of your car. Just keep your windows closed! You’ll reach a parking area where you can walk through the main zoo area. It’s fairly large with a good variety of animals and different animal shows to see.

Mongo Nature Reserve

Montgó Nature Reserve is located between Denia and Javea. The park includes a coastal section that covers over 3 kilometres and is a peferct area to do some hiking. The tourist information center offers a useful booklet (available in Spanish, English, French and German) detaining different hiking routes ranging from 2.6 to 9.6 km of various difficulty levels.

Denia has good nightlife too, with plenty of places to eat and or drink at. The main place for action is the coast road near the port, where the restuarants and bars are very tasteful. Hook Bar is one good lively bar, and there are a few others along the seafront.

Talasa Caelus

A balanced world is possible. Live slowly.

Just a few meters from La Almadraba beach in El Verger, and a few kilometers from Denia, Talasa Utopian Village is born. This project challenges convention with the firm intention of turning the impossible into reality: creating a set of residential developments that aspire to form a sustainable, healthy, and respectful community.

Talasa Utopian Village is a sustainable home.

Always seeking the utmost respect for nature, the project is conceived with brilliant sustainable strategies: rainwater collection, channeling, and reuse systems that will give life to a lush sustainable ecosystem; refreshing gardens with native species that require minimal maintenance; large surfaces of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption energy generation; even multiple charging stations for electric mobile vehicles.

Luxury is having everything you need while respecting the surrounding ecosystem.

el vergel safari park denia

Perfectly designed homes

Caelus is the first development of Talasa Utopian Village, and in its first phase, it will feature 51 homes with 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms.

The buildings at Talasa Caelus are designed as compact structures a response to the architects’ and designers’ constant pursuit of efficiency in the development. These decisions, spread throughout the various key points of the residential area, ensure that your home stays at the right temperature both in winter and summer.

But undoubtedly, the main feature of the Talasa Caelus homes will be their large terraces. With regular proportions, they are the ideal spaces for outdoor living. The integration of the living room with these spacious terraces will unite your home as a livable volume where the interior merges with the exterior.

Moreover, the construction in the area is planned to have minimal impact. The careful selection of construction materials has allowed you to enjoy the extraordinary views offered by the natural environment of Talasa Caelus permanently.

Homes organized around a living room open to a terrace-bedroom. Live inside and outside the house.

Common areas

The common areas of Talasa Caelus embody a deeply natural spirit. As you walk through different areas, you’ll find ideal spaces for strolling, engaging in sports activities, and, above all, using bicycles.

Gather with your partner, family, or friends at the social clubs; enjoy open squares protected from the sun and unwind in cool spots where vegetation thrives and air constantly circulates.

What else? Take note: ample and numerous swimming pools scattered throughout the residential area, sensory gardens, spaces for yoga practice, self-consumption vegetable gardens, bicycle workshops, and pet washing zones.

Airports near to El Vergel

Alicante is the best-placed airport for travel abroad, and like any major city, offers a variety of destinations and price points for the budget conscious. The working day is often seasonal, with later opening hours over the summer months, and many businesses still close during traditional siesta hours. Alicante Airport (IATA: ALC, ICAO: LEAL), also known as Alicante-Elche Airport, is currently the fifth largest airport in Spain and is the gateway to the Costa Blanca resort region, serving both the Valencia Community and the Region of Murcia. It is located 9 kilometres southwest of Alicante city. Growing in size continuously over the past years, in March 2011 the airport got a brand new terminal building, replacing the old two terminals. Corvera Murcia Airport is a new Airport in Murcia. Several airlines are flying in and out of Corvera Murcia Airport, covering an increasing number of flight routes. Corvera replaces Murcia San Javier Airport (for civilian flights) and is also run by AENA (the official airport authority). It has significant scope to handle many more additional routes. Valencia Airport ( VLC ) also known as Manises Airport, is the tenth-busiest Spanish airport in terms of passengers and second in the region after Alicante. It is situated 8 km (5.0 mi) west of the city of Valencia, in Manises. The airport has flight connections to about 20 European countries and 5.79 million passengers passed through the airport in 2016. A new regional terminal, expanded car parking facilities and apron area have been recently constructed in time for the 2007 America’s Cup. The runway has been also lengthened by 50 m (160 ft). The airport has one terminal and one runway. The former runway 04/22 is not in use and has no ILS but has a helipad at the southwestern end. It is the main base of Iberia’s regional carrier Air Nostrum. Irish low-cost airline Ryanair used the airport as a hub since 2007 but decided to close it in November 2008 following a dispute over subsidies by the airport authorities. Since then the airline has continued to operate out of Valencia but as a relatively large destination airport, and not a base.

Main Botanical Garden of The Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest and most famous is Moscow. The garden is a real museum of nature with a very rich (more than 18000 types) collection of plants. The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.
