Why visit france, our most popular school trip destination.

France is by far our most popular school trip destination. This is for two very important reasons. Firstly, it offers exciting opportunities to bring almost any subject to life.

And secondly, the short journey times from the UK mean that educational tours to France can work for all budgets and timeframes because you can choose to travel by coach. This means that school trips to France are generally very affordable and work well for any duration, from a day trip to a whole week!

A rich, vibrant culture

France is famous for its rich culture and many groups choose to visit France on a school trip simply for the opportunity to experience this. Others want to learn more about the country's art or fashion .

And, of course, for French-language school trips, the opportunity to explore French culture through the French language is an unforgettable experience that will not only spark a passion for France in your students, it will also give them a huge boost of confidence in their language skills.

Incredible history

On a school trip to France, your students could learn about the experience of the soldiers in the trenches of WW1 . Or they could discover how D-Day was the beginning of the end of WW2 . You could travel even further back in time, to explore the Paris of the French Revolution !

Fascinating geography

The Auvergne in central France is the perfect destination for a geography school trip designed to help students learn more about volcanoes and rivers, and how powerful they are in terms of shaping the surrounding landscape. And the best bit is, you can get there by coach, reducing the environmental impact of your trip.

One thing you can be certain of with a school trip to France is that your students won’t go hungry. Of course, France is famous for its cuisine and this makes it incredibly popular for food technology school trips .

But many of our other groups also choose to include some food-based activities in their itineraries too! One of the highlights for many French groups, for example, is the opportunity to visit a local bakery and learn about the cultural significance of bread and how it’s made by a real French baker.

The long history of Mont Saint-Michel is thought to date back to 708AD when Aubert, Bishop of Avranches had a sanctuary built on Mont-Tombe in honour of the Archangel. The Mount soon became a major focus of pilgrimage and in the 10th century, the Benedictines settled in the Abbey while a village grew up below its walls. By the 14th century it extended as far as the foot of the rock. An impregnable stronghold during the Hundred Years War, Mont Saint-Michel is also an example of military architecture. Following the dissolution of the religious community during the revolution, the Abbey was then used as a prison until 1863. Classified as an historic monument in 1874, it underwent major restoration work.Mont Saint-Michel has been listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO since 1979.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can’t see the destination i’m looking to travel to, can you still help me with my trip.

Yes, absolutely. The destinations listed on our website are only a sample of the different trips we can offer. If you have another destination in mind, simply fill out our enquiry form with all your requirements and one of our Tour Advisers will be in touch with a tailor-made quote.

Do you offer travel insurance?

Yes, all of our trips include comprehensive travel insurance, which now includes Covid cover. This group travel insurance covers individuals needing to drop out of the trip in the following circumstances:

  • Because a Qualified Medical Practitioner has diagnosed them as positive for Covid-19 within up to 14 days of departure.

  • Because they have been told to self-isolate by NHS Test & Trace for a period of time that prevents them from taking part in the trip.

The insurance also covers reasonable additional costs of accommodation and flights should an individual contract Covid-19 and have to self-isolate while abroad.

And the policy also covers reasonable additional costs to account for a family member to come across or a group leader/teacher to stay with the individual.

Please contact us for details.

Is it better to fly or travel by coach on a school trip to France?

All destinations within France are reachable by coach or via air with a transfer. If you're travelling with a relatively small group, less than 20 students, then flying generally makes more financial sense as you won't have enough passengers to fill the coach.

If you're travelling to destinations such as Normandy and the Opal Coast in Northern France, then travelling by coach is often the best option due to the shorter journey time from Calais and you'll have use of the coach to travel to and from excursions and visits during your trip.

Another thing to consider is your school's proximity to the nearest airport that flies to your destination. For most groups it usually comes down to cost and which option offers better value for money.

Your Tour Adviser will be able to quote you on both options and advise you on the advantages and disadvantages to help you decide which is the best option for your group.

When is the best time to visit France?

France really is a year-round destination for school groups. Destinations in the south, such as Nice and Montpellier are ideal in the spring and summer and also offer the opportunity to enjoy some autumn sunshine.

And, of course, Christmas is always very popular in destinations such as Lille, Amiens and Strasbourg thanks to their famous Christmas markets. These trips are very popular with language groups as they offer the opportunity to practise speaking French with the stallholders, but we can arrange other language trips all over France at any time of year.

Can the trip itinerary be adapted to my curriculum and requirements?

Every trip we organise is unique and your itinerary manager will work with you to understand your curriculum and adapt the itinerary to suit your learning objectives. The itineraries featured on our website are just a sample of what's achievable within a given timeframe. The trip duration and the activities and excursions can be tailored to your needs and budget.

How far ahead should I start planning my trip?

As a general rule, we recommend that you start planning your next school trip 12-18 months before your travel date. This gives you plenty of time to get sign-off from senior leadership and to launch your trip in school to students and parents. Planning early will also mean you have a greater choice of accommodation and travel options.

If you start planning your trip later, don't worry. It is definitely possible to plan a trip in a shorter amount of time. We're here to support you and we have a selection of templates and useful guides to guide you through the process.

What accommodation options are available?

You can see examples of the types of accommodation we have available in different destinations on the sample trip pages linked above.

All of our accommodation partners have been chosen based on their suitability for school groups. As a member of the School Travel Forum (STF), you can be certain that all accommodation contracted by us complies with local legislation with respect to fire and general safety, is contracted by trained Halsbury Travel staff or reputable agents, receives a standard audit and risk assessment prior to use by Halsbury Travel and receives a supplementary audit if it is used on five or more occasions in a year.

Your Tour Adviser will discuss your accommodation preferences with you when putting together your tailor-made quote and will assist you in choosing the best accommodation for your budget and requirements.

Why we provide academic travel programs in france:, with so many students learning french in the uk, a school trip to france immerses students in the language, improving their comprehension, listening and speaking skills. we recommend combining a school trip to paris with activities like hiking the puy de dôme or visiting the château d’if, which was a setting in dumas’ the count of monte cristo, to inspire students to throw themselves into french culture and to discover the ways it connects to subjects such as geography, history and literature..

SCHOOL TRIPS TO FRANCE

France is our most popular destination, and our school tour package offers complete language, cultural and historical experiences, with shorter travel times and very competitive pricing. From day trips to Boulogne to tours of Paris, and from language emersion to twentieth century history, France is a destination which can be tailored to any learning objective and subject specialism. France is also an ideal destination for reward trips, with tours to Paris, Disneyland® Paris and Parc Astérix a perennial favourite.

Outside of Paris, discover the charms of provincial France and allow your school group to explore the pretty towns and villages of the Côte d’Opale or Brittany, or show your pupils the varied history and culture of Normandy, with its ancient links to the people of Great Britain. At Christmas, the country’s breathtaking cities and towns take on a different aspect, and trips to the Lille Christmas Markets, and increasingly the markets held next to the iconic landmarks of Paris, are sure to fill you with festive cheer.

History teachers will find that there is plenty to do, and a history school trip to France may focus on the First World War or Second World War, with the battlefields of the Somme and the landing beaches of Normandy ever in remembrance. For French teachers where better than France for your pupils to see the unique vibrancy of French language and culture?

Whatever your subject, age and level you teach, we are sure we can tailor make a French tour that will exactly suit your requirements. Why not flick through our destination specific pages above to begin your journey?

School Trips to France

2024 is now well underway – nearly April already! The Olympic Games in Paris, the 80th Anniversary of D-Day…  it’s a great time for a school trip to France!

Here at Château Beaumont, we provide a fun and engaging getaway for school kids of all ages. Through our trips, school children not only experience the beautiful sights and sounds of French culture but, also learn a thing or two about language and even themselves.

Why is this important?  It’s long been understood that shared, new experiences are inspire us and bond us as a community.  Yet the impact of the Covid-19 lockdowns on children have placed greater emphasis on the need for opportunities to get out, discover and experience new things.

KS3 pupils can test their language skills in real-life situations by visiting markets, farms and shops – by interacting with native French speakers – but simply experiencing new sights, sounds and flavours is an important opportunity for younger pupils in KS2.   We provide lots of fun and engaging activities on site including everything from Musketeer training to team-building exercises and the Zip Wire, not to mention the opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside and architecture France is renowned for around Europe and the world.

We have years of experience offering a huge range of interesting tours and fun activities for children to take part in, enriching them on a cultural and educational level. All of our staff provide fun, expert guidance and information to create an amazing experience that children will remember forever.

Excursions & activities

–Select an excursion or activity–

Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe

At the western end of the Champs Elysées the famous Arc is decorated with a huge frieze, commissioned by Napoleon as a tribute to his own military victories, including the famous ‘Le Départ des Volontaires’ (also known as ‘Le Marseillaise’). In 1920 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was laid at the arch’s base, and an eternal flame burns to commemorate the dead of World War I and World War II. There is a spiral staircase to the top of the arch for fantastic views across Paris.

Bateaux Parisiens

Bateaux Parisiens

Take this sightseeing boat trip along the Seine and enjoy a new perspective on many of Paris’s best-known landmarks including a detailed and informative commentary. Departing from near the Eiffel Tower your trip takes you past sites including Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay – and much more!

Brie Market and Town Trail

Brie Market and Town Trail

Discover a picturesque, traditional town, with its Gothic church and its twelfth century castle; Brie Comte-Robert is the historic capital of the Brie region. PGL’s exclusive town trails are available in English and French, and will help your group make the most of exploring the streets of the town; or visit the vibrant market with its many artisan traders for plentiful opportunities to practise making transactions and negotiations in French!

Château de Fontainebleau

Château de Fontainebleau

The opulent and impressive apartments of both Marie Antoinette and Napoleon are among unmissable sights at the Château de Fontainebleau, the former residence of the French royal family until the French Revolution of 1789. The gardens are also magnificent and PGL has produced a visit trail to help you explore and appreciate the 130 acres of palace grounds.

Château Vaux-le-Vicomte

Château Vaux-le-Vicomte

Château Vaux-le-Vicomte makes an impressive addition to your itinerary; the architect that designed it was the same architect who went on to build the Palace at Versailles. The Château was created for Nicholas Fouquet who famously embezzled state funds and was sentenced to solitary confinement for the rest of his life wearing an iron mask. This is the where the story of "The Man in the Iron Mask" originates. The Château is set in large enclosed gardens which means the group can enjoy some freedom to explore.

Cité des Sciences

Cité des Sciences

The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is the biggest science museum in Europe and specialises in promoting science. Its goal is to spread scientific and technical knowledge – particularly among young people. Five million visitors a year come to see attractions that include a planetarium, a submarine and an IMAX theatre (La Géode) as well as special areas for children and teenagers where there is a wide range of interactive exhibits. Supporting information is provided in both English and French.

Disneyland® Paris

Disneyland® Paris

Add some extra sparkle and wow-factor to your school trip with a visit to Disneyland® Paris! If you’ve not been before you’ll be amazed at the range of more than 50 unforgettable rides and experiences. Divided into two connecting parks, Disneyland Park and the Walt Disney Studios Park - you can choose a single park ticket, or Hopper, allowing you access to both. There are shows, parades and seasonal spectaculars – even educational packs and activities if that’s what you are looking for. It’s really so much more than a theme park. And if you have been before, no doubt you are already planning your return visit!

Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower

See it and see from it! Enjoy the panoramic views of the city and include the tower itself as the backdrop to your own photographs, because you cannot visit Paris and not visit the iconic Eiffel Tower. It’s the defining symbol of Paris – indeed of France. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 to commemorate 100 years since the French Revolution, and for more than four decades it held the record as the tallest structure in the world. It has welcomed more than 250 million visitors, and in 2009 celebrated its 120th birthday – no mean feat for a structure that was originally designed to stand for only 20 years!

On-site activities

On-site activities

Challenge yourselves with a selection of on-centre PGL activities from Axe Throwing to Archery Tag.

Parc Astérix

Parc Astérix

Choose Parc Astérix for a theme park experience with a very French feel as you share your day’s adventures with the much-loved French cartoon characters, Astérix and Obélix. Known in particular for its wide range of roller coasters and the fantastic aquatic theatre, it is a good alternative to Disneyland Paris for an exciting and action-packed day out.

Paris Montparnasse tower

Paris Montparnasse tower

With quizzes in French or English, maths challenges and various other activities designed for school groups, the 689ft Paris Montparnasse tower offers a good alternative to the Eiffel Tower – and of course offers the opportunity to include the Eiffel Tower as part of your Paris panorama! It takes 38 seconds to travel from the ground floor to the 56th floor, 640 feet above ground level, in one of the fastest lifts in Europe. From the panoramic windows of the deck that circles the floor there are stunning 360o views over the city. And don’t miss the climb to the 59th floor to enjoy the open air roof terrace too.

Sacré Cœur & Montmartre

Sacré Cœur & Montmartre

Walk around Montmartre to share the experiences of some of the most famous and influential artists who lived here - Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh to name but a few. Then eat your packed lunch sitting on the steps of the familiar sight of the basilica of the Sacré Cœur which can be seen from all over Paris and enjoy breathtaking views over the city. Montmartre is so distinctive - a hub of activity with a bohemian atmosphere which endures to the present day. Street artists will produce your portrait in any style you can think of, and busy bars, cafés and restaurants celebrate the varied and colourful history of the district.

Snail Farm

What could be more French than a visit to a snail farm? The owner offers an interesting guided tour of his farm in French, full of information about snails and how the farm works; children have the chance to handle the snails – and even to taste them! See the snails at their liveliest with an evening visit by torchlight – though daytime visits are also popular and the farm also has a range of other animals to visit.

Stade de France

Stade de France

The home of French football and rugby international teams was originally opened in 1998 and hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1998 in which France beat Brazil 3-0 in the final. The Brazilian team were based in the same place as you that year! They stayed at the Château de Grande Romaine which PGL acquired just 2 years later in 2000. France’s iconic stadium is a visit that need not be limited to those with sporting interests. The guided tour provides insights into everything from its construction to the running of the stadium and the events held in it.

The Louvre

Home to possibly the most famous and controversial painting in the world, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is one of the world’s greatest art museums. A visit is a must – whether or not your group has a specific interest in art. With so much to see you can schedule as much time as you like – or a short visit to focus just on the highlights. Entrance to the permanent exhibition is free of charge and guided tours (usually taking 1.5 hours) are available in French or English to suit the needs of your group – or self-guide for ultimate flexibility.

–Select an activity–

Ambush

If you love hide and seek, you’ll adore Ambush which takes this popular group game and ramps it up an extra notch! After sundown your group will split into small teams, with one team hiding within the centre grounds, leaving a trail for their competitors to follow. Great for developing strategic and team building skills. Ambush is usually run in the dark, and torches are advised. Available September to March

Balloon Splash

Balloon Splash

Each team completes a series of challenges or games to earn coins that will allow them to purchase items from a mystery box! Teams will then work closely together to create the best contraption to protect their water balloon from destruction.

Campfire

The ultimate way to enjoy the great outdoors as a group! Enjoy a campfire tailored to your requirements. Get hands-on constructing your campfire during the day, and it will be lit ready for you to enjoy in the evening. If your group loves to sing or simply relax with some games around the campfire, our team can cater for all ages in the idyllic settings of our campfires.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Gator marching band heading to France for 80th anniversary of D-Day

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - University of Florida marching band members are packing up their instruments and heading to France for the anniversary of D-Day.

The marching band will be the premier performance ensemble and parade leader for the events surrounding the anniversary.

The parade travels through Omaha Beach and will conclude with the gator band’s standstill performance which commemorates the American soldiers who lost their lives on D-day.

One band member who is going on this trip says she couldn’t pass this opportunity up when she initially heard about it.

“We’re representing the country at the 80th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy,” said Kristen Camodeca, a drum major. “That is such a big deal and it’s so cool that we were selected to do this. I’m just so honored.”

Camodeca says she has been so excited about the trip that she has been helping pack and organize the custom bags and shirts made for this historic trip.

“The fact that we are able to go overseas and do this, I think that in itself is just incredible,” said Camodeca.

Band members have been preparing by practicing nonstop and researching the history of this memorial.

“We’ve been sending videos and things like that to all the students to kind of help acquaint them to what happened during D-Day,” said Jay Watkins, the director of the band.

Prior to this trip, band members went to Ireland for the St. Patrick’s celebration.

“We didn’t really want to do two back-to-back but when this opportunity came up, we didn’t think we could say no,” said Watkins. “We’re really excited, really honored to be able to go.”

They plan on leaving on Monday, arriving by Tuesday and staying for eight days.

For the past several years, Deerfield has participated in the Green Cup Challenge , an interscholastic energy conservation competition. The school that reduces its kWh usage by the largest percentage wins. The school that reduces GHG emissions by the largest percentage is recognized.

Deerfield runs an on-campus competition during the Green Cup Challenge. Through the month-long challenge, our students follow the success of their dormitory on  our energy dashboard  and compare their achievements to their on-campus peers and to other schools. The dorm that reduces its energy the most from an established baseline wins a significant prize—an on-campus activity for themselves and another dorm of their choosing, AND a cash prize proportional to dorm size. Because the Green Cup Challenge is a month-long event, we believe that the changed energy consumption practices are more likely to become a learned behavior.

As an SYA member school, Deerfield is able to offer a wide range of study abroad options. In addition to spending school years living and learning languages in foreign countries, Deerfield students can also participate in faculty-led trips during the spring and summer, which allow students to use their language skills in practical settings, under the guidance of Deerfield language faculty.

Think 80|20 is Deerfield’s campus recycling program, which has the goal of changing our habits so that only 20% of our campus waste ends up in a landfill. Think 80|20 signs are posted in all campus buildings and on all recycling/compost/landfill receptacles to educate people on how to dispose of their waste appropriately.

The Energy Dashboard displays daily, weekly, and annual energy consumption information in a building-by-building format. In addition, you can track the performance of solar power systems on two buildings. The Dashboard is an integral part of coursework in many classrooms, and it is wildly popular during the Green Cup Challenge each year.

Environmental proctors are student leaders in sustainability efforts at Deerfield Academy. Working with the Sustainability Coordinator, e-proctors participate in a variety of projects, including dormitory recycling and energy conservation challenges, and promote sustainability around campus.

Upperclassmen can apply to become e-proctors each fall. E-proctors are required to attend biweekly meetings, be involved in one “project” per term, post sustainability announcements and educational materials in dorms, and be a role model for their peers. They will play an important part in helping Deerfield to be environmentally sustainable. A complete list of e-proctors’ duties is available online .

A variety of faculty-led trips allow students to travel under the guidance of a Deerfield teacher without having to spend the entire year living and studying in a foreign country. These trips, which usually take place during spring break or the summer, often include a homestay, and are a great way to improve language skills and experience a different culture.

Language requirements vary by program. Consult individual program websites for more information.

Deerfield’s study abroad partner schools offer a comparable set of courses, so students can fulfill Academy requirements with little or no penalty to their academic progress. All students who are thinking about studying abroad should meet with Director of Studies  Lydia Hemphill for assistance in planning their study abroad experience.

Study abroad is available to all students from their sophomore to senior years, although typically students who choose to go abroad will do so during their junior year.

Deerfield has a wide net of international associations, and therefore has the ability to offer a broad spectrum of study abroad opportunities. Semesters abroad in Jordan, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas are highlights of Deerfield’s international programs , which also include Round Square service trips, a variety of  School Year Abroad  opportunities, exchange programs, and  faculty-led trips  to places such as the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Colombia and China.

The Center for Service and Global Citizenship offers two types of grants: CSGC Grants and Micro-Grants.

CSGC Grants : These grants invite Deerfield Academy students to serve others during their summer months. The grants are offered through the generosity of the Cost, Earle, Mendillo and Workman families, and the funds are provided to honor the call in our Mission Statement:

A vibrant, ethical community that embraces diversity, the Academy prepares students for leadership in a rapidly changing world that requires global understanding, environmental stewardship, and dedication to service.

Micro-Grants : Through the CSGC, students can apply to up to $150 to fund student-generated projects on and off campus during the school year.

The annual Spring Term Community Event, hosted at the Deerfield Academy Track, draws the largest number of students to any one service event.  Each year, the CSGC Student Board determines which organization will be the focus of our fundraising and awareness efforts, and the spring term event is the culmination of this year-long effort.  In the recent past, the American Cancer Society and Cancer Connection of Northampton have been the organizations the Deerfield Academy community has supported.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County is the service program with the largest participation, calling on approximately seventy juniors and seniors to serve as “Bigs” who spend Friday evenings with a child from Franklin County to serve as mentors and role models. Deerfield Academy also hosts several Red Cross blood drives, which collect blood for use in local hospitals, and students participate as donors and volunteers.

Students can pursue service as a co-curricular option, engaging in community service projects one to four days a week. Projects include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County, Second-Helpings (a food kitchen and food distribution program), Musica Franklin (music instruction to middle-school students), and after-school programs at two local elementary schools. In addition, students can engage in service abroad in the Cambiando Vidas program in the Dominican Republic, and a variety of other CSGC service trips. Students have the opportunity to design their own programs in their local community and abroad, utilizing funding from the Charles Cost Award, or David Workman Grant to be used in the summer or during the school year.  Every athletic team also participates in at least one day of local community service at some point during their season.

Deerfield’s varied and expansive community service programs require a great deal of planning and organization. Most programs are planned through the CSGC Student Board. The board handles all event planning and fundraising and serves as a liaison between the school and other Franklin County and regional service organizations.

The legacy of Frank L. Boyden means that service is an intrinsic part of a Deerfield education. Every year students are reminded of the words of Mr. Boyden: “The test of the worth of any school is, in the last analysis, the record of her alumni… it is our sincere hope that the tradition of service instilled and nurtured here… may endure always to the lasting benefit of the country and the world.” With such a powerful call for service at the heart of its mission, Deerfield places a strong emphasis on service in all its forms. As such, there are a plethora of service opportunities at Deerfield, and students are enthusiastically encouraged to participate as much as they can.

CIVA prepares for trip to France ahead of 80th ‘D-Day’ anniversary

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - June 6 marks the 80th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy, otherwise known as D-Day. While that event serves a monumental place in World history, it holds just as special of a place for the Comanche people.

17 Comanche Soldiers served as Code Talkers in World War II. They spoke in their own language to not be understood by enemy defenses.

In honor of the upcoming anniversary, Comanche Indian Veteran Affairs members will travel to France where they’ll pay homage to those who came before them.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” said CIVA Commander, Roger Tehauno. “To give tribute to those men. They say they were the greatest fighting force the world’s ever known. If it wasn’t for them we might all be speaking German.”

Several members of CIVA will make the journey to Tilly France next week, ahead of the D-Day Anniversary. While the trip offers a chance for fun, its main purpose is for travelers to honor sacrifices made during the war.

”Comanche Code Talkers Contributed quite a bit during World War II during the D-Day landings,” said Kevin Pohawpatchoko, CIVA D-Day Events Coordinator. “The other thing is, I want to honor my dad. He’s a World War II survivor.”

Nona Mihecoby is also looking to pay homage to her father, who served as a Comanche Code Talker during the landing.

“I never knew daddy was a code talker until our historian at the time called my sister, my brother and I to let us know,” she explained. “I think the most touching part was when we were able to walk out on the beach, when you get far back and you turn around to look to see where they landed, you get chills.”

This is Mihecoby’s third trip to France. She shared her hopes of continuing her father’s legacy through her work with CIVA.

”My father would’ve been elated, he would’ve been very proud of me. As I am of my father,” she said.

The group will stay with French host families, sharing history and building connections. Though the world was over a lifetime ago for some, stories of the war are yet to be told.

”I wanted to be here on behalf of daddy to learn more of what he did. Because it was very ecstatic to me,” Mihecoby said. “I was elated to know he did that, because he never spoke. They took that secrecy and he took that secret to his grave. He never told his children anything.”

While secrets and stories may have gone to soldiers’ graves with them, the contributions to American Freedom by those 17 Comanche code talkers will never be forgotten.

Their names are memorialized in the Comanche Nation Complex.

More than 60 World War II veterans jetted off to France from Dallas Friday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The heroic group — ranging in age from 90 to a jaw-dropping 107 — were welcomed aboard the charter American Airlines plane by a crowd of grateful onlookers who waved the Stars and Stripes.

The group will take part in a busy multi-day journey that includes a wreath-laying ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery, a trip to the Eiffel Tower and visits to several historic WWII sites.

They will also participate in a daily ceremony known as le Ravivage de la Flamme, which honors fallen French service members at the Arc de Triomphe.

The trip will culminate on June 6 — the 80th anniversary of D-Day — with ceremonies on Omaha and Utah Beaches, two of the Normandy landing sites for the Allied forces.

“We’re honored to play a part in helping this group of heroic veterans return to Normandy,” David Seymour, American Airlines’s Chief Operating Officer and a veteran of the US Army, said in a statement.

“This special journey is not only an expression of our gratitude for these heroes and the sacrifices they made for our freedom, but we hope to help shine a light on their extraordinary stories and preserve their legacies for generations to come.”

The group traveling from Dallas includes six Medal of Honor recipients from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam who wish to honor the World War II veterans.

There are also two Rosie the Riveters, representing women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war.

Almost 160,000 Allied troops, 73,000 from the United States, landed at Normandy on June 6, 1944, in a massive amphibious operation designed to break through heavily fortified German defenses and begin the liberation of Western Europe.

A total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself, including 2,501 Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded.

More than 9,000 US service members have been laid to rest at the Normandy American Cemetery.

President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron walk along the Colonnade of the White House in Washington, Thursday, December 1, 2022.

President Emmanuel Macron will next week host Joe Biden for the US leader's first state visit to France after both leaders attend commemorations for the World War II D-Day landings, the Elysée Palace said Thursday, May 30. Biden's visit on June 8 for talks with Macron in Paris will come after the June 6 ceremony in Normandy marking 80 years since the D-Day landings. In a separate statement, the White House said Biden would be in France from June 5 to June 9.

On June 6, Biden will speak and participate in ceremonies with his wife Jill Biden to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, "which paved the way for the liberation of France and Europe," the White House said in the statement. "Seventy three thousand brave Americans landed at Utah and Omaha beaches in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and the president will greet American veterans and their family members while in France to honour their sacrifice," the statement added.

On June 7, Biden will give a speech at Pointe du Hoc – a clifftop promontory whose German bunkers were attacked by US troops in a daring assault during the landings – "about the importance of defending freedom and democracy," the White House said. The state visit on June 8 will "reflect the enduring and comprehensive relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally, founded on shared democratic values, economic ties, and defense and security cooperation." The two presidents will discuss a wide range of "global challenges" and bilateral issues, Washington said.

Discussions also will include climate-related issues and will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic, space and nuclear fields, the statement said. Macron's office said for its part that the two presidents would discuss "the unfailing and long-term support" for Ukraine.

In Normandy next week, major commemorations will draw 25 heads of state and government, along with dozens of World War II veterans, to honor the nearly 160,000 troops from Britain, the United States, Canada and other nations that landed on June 6, 1944. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is amid those expected to attend.

Uber to Offer Seine Cruises, Day Trips in Paris During Olympics Rush

(Reuters) - Uber Technologies unveiled a raft of measures on Wednesday, including a tie-up to offer cruises on the Seine river as it looks to meet explosive demand stemming from the upcoming Olympics in Paris.

The ride-hailing platform will offer its "Uber Cruises" free of charge from July 12 to August 3, and customers can also book a day trip that includes a champagne tasting through its "Uber Bubbles" launch.

Uber also plans to make a "significant" investment in driver incentives and discounts for riders. The company did not disclose the amount it is investing in these initiatives.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

More than 15 million visitors are expected to arrive in Paris this summer - a 30% increase from previous years - straining public transport networks, the company said.

It expects a record 40,000 drivers to provide rides on its platform during the Olympics.

Uber has also been attempting to capture cost-conscious customers through lower priced offerings.

While dynamic pricing will be used during the Olympics, Uber will offer rider promotions at key locations such as airports and Parisian train stations, where it expects nearly one million people to travel with Uber.

Uber provides drivers with "promotions" such as extra pay for completed trips that begin in specific areas, within a specific time window.

The company said its "app has also been approved for use throughout Paris, with the Préfecture de Police granting Uber drivers access to the most restricted areas of the city."

Uber's efforts in Paris will include continuously updated maps and routing in the driver app to highlight zone restrictions and road closures as well as dedicated in-app drop off and pick up zones.

It is also adding more than 130 new Uber Access vehicles to its platform.
