Fraser Island and The Whitsunday Islands are two of the must see spots on the East Coast of Australia – with a 4×4 Fraser Island Tour and Whitsundays Sailing Adventure being top of many travellers bucket lists in the land down under.

So we’ve packaged together our favourite two trips to offer our Fraser Island and Whitsundays Deal!

You’ll cruise along the beaches of Fraser Island in a 4×4 visiting spots like Lake Mackenzie, Indian Head Lookout, the Maheno Shipwreck and Champagne Pools whilst enjoying your evenings camping under the stars.

On the Whitsundays you’ll sail around these stunning tropical island visiting Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout and snorkelling the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef – sleeping on board a catamaran and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.

So what’s included in this Fraser Island and Whitsunday Island deal?

• 2 day, 2 night Whitsunday Sailing Adventure on Tongarra
• 3 day, 2 night Fraser Island Safari with Dingos
• 2 nights accommodation in Rainbow Beach (1 night pre and post trip)

It’s two of Australias best trips bundled together so you have more money to spend on the rest of your East Coast adventure!

Both trips can be booked fixed or open dated and travel between Rainbow Beach and Airlie Beach is NOT included – so it’s the perfect bolt on to your campervan hire or bus pass!

Additional information

You MUST attend the pre trip safety briefing @ 4pm, Dingos Hostel the night before your departure.

After loading up all the 4x4s and completing the driver briefing it’s time to head to Fraser Island, departing by 9:30am, where you’ll catch the ferry and begin your adventure! Cruise up the beach and inland through the jungle tracks to the stunning Lake Mackenzie. Make sure you’ve packed your GoPro and swim stuff! Around 3pm we drive up the beach to our campsite, for an early dinner and some well deserved drinks and fun!

Time for your first full day on Fraser Island! Highlights from the day include;

•Floating peacefully down Eli Creek

•Taking some awesome pics at the magnificent Maheno Shipwreck

•Stunning views across the coastline from Indian Head Lookout

•Coloured Sands and The Pinnacles

Your final day on the island! Wake up early to make the most of the last of your time by hiking through the rainforest tracks to Lake Wabby – the deepest lake on the island and the perfect spot for a morning swim. After checking out the surrounding sand dunes it’s time to make your way down the island to the ferry crossing.

Once back on the mainland we head back to the 4WD shed where you unpack and quickly clean the cars. We return to Dingos Resort between 3pm and 4pm

Driver Requirements:  To drive on Fraser you MUST be 21 or over with a FULL manual license. You must have held this license for a minimum of 1 year and you must have the license with you.

• DINNER: First Night: Herbed BBQ white fish on a bed of mashed potato served with coleslaw and Australian damper

Dietary Requirements: Please note we will substitute all main meals free of charge however we suggest those sufering from celiac disease supply their own snacks.

Please be advised a $15pp holiday surcharge for 24th and 31st December departures applies (payable on check in at ABC Travel only).

Open tickets  MUST  give  21 days ’ notice to book.

All bookings  MUST  reconfirm 72hrs in prior to departure during office hours (9am-5pm). Travel Insurance is highly recommended particularly during wet season (Jan-Apr). Cancellations within 21 days of departure will forfeit cost of trip.

Check in at Whitsunday Sailing Adventures 402 Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach (Opposite Fish D’Vine)  from 9am-5pm on the day prior to travel or before 11am on day of departure. BYO Alcohol and drinks (no glass or red wine) LUGGAGE can be stored for just AU$5 per person.  ONLY ZIPLESS BAGS  will be accepted on-board. It is advised to bring a rain jacket during summer months (Jan – April) and warmer clothes during winter months (June-September).  Departure day may change over the Christmas & New Year each year.  Only zipless bags will be allowed on the vessel.

The total price includes the following local charges – Environmental Marine Charges – $10.50 ($3.50 per day), Queensland Parks and Wildlife – $1.74, Fuel Levy – $5 and Admin – $2.76 per person per trip

Your tour starts from the day before you head out to Fraser Island with a compulsory safety briefing the day prior. This gives you a chance to learn about driving on soft sand and your safety equipment. The briefing takes about approximately 1.5 hours and you'll learn a lot. After the briefing you'll be allocated to a vehicle group. You'll then get a chance to meet other travellers who will be touring with you.

The morning of departure is an exciting time. You'll work together with your travel group to;

• Double check all your supplies
• Pack your food into the eskies
• Pack alcohol into cool boxes
• Do a full vehicle inspection
• Check all camping and cooking equipment
• Revise the driver briefing on soft sand driving and use of gears.

Then it's off you go.

See The Best Places

Your itinerary will change according to tide times and changing weather conditions. Your experienced lead driver will ensure you get to see the very best of Fraser Island. You'll be seeing places like Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Eli Creek, Champagne Pool, Indian Head and The Maheno Shipwreck to name a few.

Relax at One Base Camp

You'll only have to set up camp once on this camping trip. Every evening you'll travel back to this area to sit down, relax with a drink and cook your evening meal.

Party Time at Rainbow Beach

On the third and final day you will arrive back into Rainbow Beach approximately around 3.30pm (depending on tides). This is a great time to enjoy a few drinks and some food with you new friends at the on-site bar and restaurant. The bar hosts nightly entertainment including; live music (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays), Karaoke and party games. There are happy hour bar prices and $10 meals daily from 6-8pm.

Ride to Paradise Whitsundays Resort Stay

Departs:  Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2pm

Returns:  Wednesdays, Friday and Mondays at 12pm

2pm is your time to shine! This is the time we depart Abell Point Marina with your friendly crew on the Wildcat! We speed off in our comfy smooth vessel to the gorgeous Paradise Cove Resort. We land on the sand and walk up to the breathtaking resort where a delicious antipasto platter is waiting for you. The crew will give a safety demonstration and explain what we are going to get up to over the following day.

Following a short tour of the resort you will be shown to your rooms before enjoying some free time to take advantage of the resort’s facilities. Play tennis, pool, go stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, walk on the beach, play football or just kick back in a hammock and enjoy.

When Dinner is finished the crew will light a fire down the beach so everyone can try their hands at roasting marshmallows. After counting the stars in the night sky it’s time to head in for the night and get ready for our day of exploring tomorrow! Day 2

Rise and shine in the morning and head down for breakfast and fruit salad before heading out for the  day on the Whitsunday islands. First up we head to whitehaven beach the the stunning hill inlet lookout. After getting some amazing pictures at the lookout you can head down to the beach for some exploring. Keep your eyes peeled in the shallows for stingrays and baby sharks while enjoying soaking up the suns rays! After some beach time it’s lunch time! We enjoy some cold meats and pasta and salad to fuel us up for the afternoon.

We hop back on wildcat and head to Mantaray Bay for some amazing snorkel time. You’ll even get to meet the amazing Maori Wrasse ‘George’ as well as 100’s of colourful fish. By now you’ll be ready for some chill time so we head back to the resort for more rest, relaxation and enjoying the resorts awesome facilities. Day 3 We kick off the day with another Yummy Breakfast before heading off on another adventure. We’ll enjoy a refreshing morning race with the wind in our hair to the Langford Sandbar. The boat will take you right to the sand where you can enjoy a few hours snorkeling with the turtles on or chilling out on the beach. We enjoy some morning tea before enjoying a 45 minute ride home to Airlie beach reflecting on the awesome time had by everyone.

These packages include Seperate Trips to Fraser island and the Whitsundays as well as a nights in Airlie and Rainbow Beach before and after your trips.

The Trips can be done in whatever order and as far apart or close together as you want, it is totally flexible.

The Trips Don't include transport between Airlie Beach and Rainbow Beach. We can help you organise transport with Loka, Premier or Greyhound .

Most visitors to Australia will be planning an epic journey along the East Coast of Australia – stopping at each of the sights along the way... Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Australia Zoo, Noosa, Magnetic Island and Cairns - the adventure capital of Australia. The long stretches of roads and overnight buses will lead you through the big cities, to the surf coast and through to the tropics and the Great Barrier Reef.

However... there are 2 MUST DOS that most visitors to the east coast have on the top of their bucket lists– Sail the Whitsunday Islands and drive a 4WD along Fraser Island. Backpacking the Whitsundays and Fraser Island is one of the most popular to do's for all east coast travellers. So here’s what you need to know.

Backpacking Whitsundays

What are they.

The Whitsundays are made up of 74 stunning islands – Whitsunday Island being the most popular and home to the famous Whitehaven Beach – where the sand is so pure it squeaks and the water is so clean you can wash your teeth with it!

How do I get there?

Whitsunday Sailing Tours depart from Airlie Beach – a tiny, tropical party town located about 9 hours drive north of Fraser Island. You will need at least a day to drive there – or if you are travelling north from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay – an overnight Greyhound or Premier Bus. Alternatively you can fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport, Hamilton Island Airport or Mackay Airport, located around 1 hour from the town of Airlie Beach.

Whitsunday Sailing Trips

We suggest a 3 Day / 2 Night Sailing Trip. It takes a few hours to sail to the islands from Airlie Beach so an overnight trip is best – plus a great way to meet other people. And who wouldn’t want to sleep out on the ocean and under the stars? 3 Day / 2 Night Sailing Trips usually depart in the afternoon. You usually have to check in with the boat company in Airlie Beach by 11:00am the day of departure so give yourself enough time to get there!

If you have slightly less time to spend in paradise, there are also 2 day / 1 night tours. If you are tight on time, you can also choose a 1 day tour with Ocean Rafting or Southern Cross

If you are staying at Base Airlie Beach you can store your luggage there while you are sailing away! Trips include food, BYO alcohol & snorkelling gear. You also have the option to pay extra for a scuba dive. You will spend the 2 nights sailing around the islands, exploring Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef.

What do the tours include?

Most tours to the Whitsundays will include a stop by Whitehaven Beach. One of the best views of the beach can be captured from Hill Inlet Lookout which requires a short 20 minute tropical rainforest walk to reach the viewing platform (look out for wildlife)! As the Whitsundays are located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, mostly all sailing tours will offer the opportunity to snorkel or scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef. The Whitsundays are a popular place to spot Turtles, tropical fish and more! Many of the overnight sailing tours will also lead you through to a number of other islands within the Whitsunday Islands Group.

Backpacking Fraser Island

Why is it so popular.

It is the biggest sand island in the world and it can justifiably be described as paradise! Rich with aboriginal history, eucalyptus forests, natural swimming holes, white sand, dingos and of course – highways allowing you to drive across the island by 4WD!

Fraser Island can be accessed by ferry from either Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay. Rainbow Beach is located about 240km north of Brisbane whilst Hervey Bay is 290 km north of Brisbane. If you are travelling south along the East Coast, Hervey Bay is about 870km south of the Whitsundays – about 10 hours drive!

TIP : Begin your 4WD Tag Along tour from Noosa (1.5 hours south of Rainbow Beach) to experience the mighty sand dunes of Cooloola National Park on the way!

If you are travelling on a Greyhound or Premier Bus the journey takes a little longer as the buses stop for breaks. Travelling south you will need to get an overnight bus from Airlie Beach (the Whitsundays). We suggest stopping for 2 nights at 1770 – where the surf coast meets the Great Barrier Reef and the second place in Australia that Captain Cook visited – very chilled out, cool little town!

Where to Depart from?

Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay...

Noosa - Nomads offer some pretty great tag along tours that begin in Noosa. Nomads offer dorm style accommodation on the actual island, whereas the tag along tours from Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay usually offer camping (which is also loads of fun)! The highlight of booking a self guided tour from Noosa is the opportunity to see the sand dunes of Cooloola National Park on the way! Check out their tours nomadsfraserisland.com

Hervey Bay has an airport close by so it tends to be popular with the Aussie locals. The town is bigger than Rainbow Beach with a lot more shops, bars and restaurants. The Esplanade is beautiful and the beach is calm with little waves – so it's great for those not too comfortable in the surf! When staying there we recommend our Base Mates Palace Hostels. They also organise 4WD Tag Along camping safaris to the island.

Rainbow Beach has grown its popularity on the backpacker trail over recent years and there are 3 hostels available that organise accommodation & 4WD Tag Along Safari Packages. Our Base Mates Frasers On Rainbow have a great set up! Rainbow Beach has great surf and gives the feeling that you are literally in the middle of nowhere! This quiet town shuts down early (forcing most of the town to Frasers On Rainbow most nights for some live music) and has just one little street of shops and cafes. If visiting Rainbow Beach – be sure to check out Carlo Sand Blow – it is stunning!

You can stay at Nomads Noosa, Palace Hostels and Frasers on Rainbow by purchasing a multi night Bed Hopper Pass .

Fraser Island Tours

You've got 2 choices!

Guided Tours

Guided Tours are a great option for those wanting dorm or private accommodation on the island and for those on a really short time frame for travelling the East Coast. Meals are generally prepared and you will be accompanied with a Tour Driver who will guide you around the island in a 4WD bus. As the island is so big we suggest at least a 2 or 3 day tour. Guided Tours depart from Surfers Paradise, Brisbane, Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay – a great option for those short on time!

Tag Along Safaris

Tag Along Safaris tend to be more popular! They tend be cheaper and you have the option to drive the 4WD vehicle! This is how they roll... you will meet the day before departure at your hostel in Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay for a briefing. You will meet everyone else on the safari (sometimes there can be up to 60 people)! You will be put into a group of 6 – 8 people and your group will be given a 4WD vehicle, tents, cooking & camping facilities, food and maps! The lead vehicle will have a professional guide / driver who will lead the convoy out to the island. You will spend 3 days and 2 nights exploring and camping, Nomads Noosa however also offer dorm accommodation on the island – an experience like no other!

TRAVELLING THE EAST COAST

We recommend purchasing a Greyhound or Premier Bus Pass for your travels. You can buy a 3 month or a 6 month pass between Cairns and Melbourne, Sydney, Byron Bay and Brisbane. The buses allow you to hop on and hop off along the way! We also suggest pre-purchasing a Fraser Island & Whitsunday Sailing package as you will usually save about $100 when buying the 2 tours together. Travelling along the East Coast you will find that you will continue to bump into fellow travellers that you have met along the way!

Getting to Fraser island from the Whitsundays

If you are travelling south down the east coast of Australia from the Whitsunday Islands, Fraser Island is a must-see destination you will want to include on your itinerary. The distance between the Whitsunday Islands and Fraser Island is around 1,000km and to reach Fraser Island you must catch a ferry from the mainland. Fraser Island car and passenger ferries depart multiple times daily from the towns of Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach on the Fraser Coast. 

Departure Points to Fraser Island

If you join a Fraser Island tour you will meet at a pre-arranged departure point and travel to the ferry as a group. Depending on the tour you choose, the departure point for your Fraser Island tour may be in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay so if you are starting your trip in the Whitsundays, you will need to make your own way to one of these cities or towns at least one day prior to your tour. For those that have decided on a self-drive Fraser Island adventure or a tag-along tour , you will need to travel to Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach to catch a Fraser Island ferry. Either way, there are multiple transport options available that will get you from the Whitsundays to the Fraser Coast - car, plane, bus or train, the journey is part of the adventure!

Driving between Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays and Hervey Bay will take about 12 - 14 hours. Most travellers opt to do this over several days, taking the time to sightsee along the way and this is a great option if you have the freedom of your own car or campervan or a rental vehicle .

There are two airports in the Whitsundays; one on Hamilton Island and one in the mainland town of Proserpine about 45 minutes outside of Airlie Beach. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from either airport to Hervey Bay Airport and passengers will need to transfer to a connecting flight in Brisbane. 

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, once arriving in Brisbane you could hire a car or take a bus to either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. The drive will take about 3 hours to Rainbow Beach or 3.5 hours to Hervey Bay. There are also several Fraser Island tours that depart from Brisbane, allowing you to start your journey from here.

Greyhound and Premier Bus Service offer coach journeys from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach and can take anywhere from 12 hours to a full day depending on which service you select. This is a great budget-friendly way to travel and, if you’re looking to explore more of Australia along the way, you have the option of purchasing a hop-on, hop-off bus pass from either company that will allow for various stops along the way.

The closest train stations to the Whitsundays and Hervey Bay are found in Proserpine near the Whitsunday Coast and Maryborough West on the Fraser Coast. Travelling by train from Proserpine to Maryborough West will take around 12 hours in total and there are several types of tickets for different levels of comfort and access to the dining car and bar on board. There are several trains that travel the Fraser Coast however the best option is the Spirit of Queensland as it offers FREE RailBus Coach Connections to both Airlie Beach and Hervey Bay taking the hassle out of the connection.
