Document Your Adventures!

Traveling is a great time for personal growth, meeting new people, and discovering what the world has to offer.

One thing you’re likely to do while travelling is to snap photos to document what you see.

While photographs are lovely, things like thoughts, feelings, scents, noises, and even conversations are frequently lost with the passage of time.

However, if you keep notes about your trip, you will be able to chronicle those things that the camera will not be able to catch.

Each colorful page gives you the opportunity to jot down all the details of your trip, including subjects or points of view that you may not usually consider making note of.

You will then be able to relive the memories by just reading your travel journal and looking at your pictures.

Reliving our vacations is why I write (and share!) my Disney trip reports on my blog!

Is This A Guided Travel Journal?

Every travel adventure is different, so, this isn’t a guided journal as such, but there are ten questions to get you started, as well as motivational quotes to inspire you.

  • Talk about the places where you are considering traveling.
  • Which destination seems to keep drawing you back? Why?
  • Do you have a goal or specific reason for traveling to the next place?
  • Write about your expectations regarding the upcoming trip.
  • Write about the destination research you’ve done so far.
  • What “Must See” suggestions have you gotten from others? Which of these are a good fit for you and interest you the most?
  • What fascinates you about your destination and why?
  • What is the funniest thing that’s happened in your journey?
  • What surprised you most about the people, culture, food, etc.?
  • What advice would you give others about going to this destination?

How To Use Your Free Printable Journal

Remember that the more frequently you write and the more information you include, the more you will appreciate your travel journal after you get home.

Here are more ideas when journalling your travel adventures:

  • Plan your vacation with the help of your journal. Discuss why you choose the destination, time, excursions, and so forth.
  • Write about how you picture your trip unfolding and what you want to accomplish, then compare that to how it actually happened!
  • How did you travel? Plane, train, automobile? Did anything noteworthy happen? What did you enjoy (and not enjoy) about traveling?
  • Write about what happens to you and how you feel while you’re on your journey, as well as your daily activities and experiences.
  • Discuss someone you met or something you witnessed that left an impression on you.
  • Consider what surprised or shocked you, what made you smile, or what you learned on that day.
  • Include photographs , ticket stubs, and other vacation keepsakes.
  • Include a map and highlight the locations you visited.
  • Document your thoughts once you return from your travels. Would you have changed anything, would you return for another visit – why or why not?

Fill your printable travel journal to your heart’s content! You can always print more pages to fill!

Every trip deserves to be remembered!

More travel journaling tips.

While journaling, remember to:

  • Add the date and title to your entries and memorable moments.
  • Write every day and include plenty of details like sights, sounds, smells, feelings, and thoughts.
  • If you’re in a rush and cannot document your day, at least make a few notes with any important details. Bullet points are your friend! Then finish the entry as soon as possible as memories tend to fade after a few days.
  • If you’re journaling for someone other than yourself, (much like I do with my trip reports!) consider questions they might ask and information that might be helpful to the reader at a later date.
  • Once you’ve completed your travel journal, the precious memories of your trip and all that you saw and learned will be safely documented forever.

The cover of a question a day journal

Are you going on a trip soon and do you want to keep track of all your fun memories? Great news! In today’s post, I’m going to show you how to make a simple DIY travel journal. It’s really easy, low-key, and fun! Plus, if you’re not feeling crafty, you can even download my free printable travel journal template that I made just for you.

Like many travelers, I used to forget the small, fun details of my trips. So, I started keeping track of memories with this one-question-a-day journal.

The idea is simple.

You just answer one fun question every day for a week. And the week after, you’ll answer the same one. It’s not like those big, heavy journals that are hard to carry. And you won’t have to write a lot, just one interesting question each day. This way, you can remember all the neat things that even photos can’t show, without any effort.

So stick with me, and I’ll show you how this easy idea can make your trips even more memorable. Let’s start making your very own travel journal!

Why you should keep a travel journal

Alright, I know you are dying to get started with this DIY travel journal, but just before you grab your crafts and head off, allow me to share a few more reasons why journaling is a game-changer for your travels.  Trust me, after reading these reasons, “forgetting” to journal will be a thing of the past!

  • Document memories: Revisiting your adventures through a journal is super fun. Those quirky anecdotes and hidden gems you discovered? They will all be in your journal waiting to be re-lived.
  • Record thoughts and ideas that you might otherwise forget: Ever had a brilliant idea or a profound realization while traveling, only to forget it later? A travel journal ensures those thoughts are captured forever.
  • Reflect and learn: Journaling allows you to ponder over your experiences, offering insights and learnings that can be transformative.
  • Unleash creativity: It’s not just about writing; it’s about expressing your creativity. Doodle, paste ticket stubs, or write a poem – your journal, your rules!
  • Enhance your journey : A journal adds depth to your travels. It encourages mindfulness and helps you appreciate the journey on a deeper level.

Ready to make your travels more memorable and meaningful? Let’s get started and make your own travel journal!

A set of sample pages for travel journals

A question-a-day: How does it work?

If you’re unfamiliar with the one-question-a-day format, let me give you a quick rundown, so you can make the most out of our free template.

Traditionally, these journals are used for an entire year, containing 365 unique questions – one for each day. The idea is to keep the journal for five years, answering the same question on the same date each year. This way, you end up with a fascinating record of how your thoughts and experiences evolve over time.

What I love about this format is the ease and simplicity. Answering just one question a day is a breeze, making it effortless to maintain a consistent journaling habit – often the biggest challenge for many travelers who want to keep a travel journal.

I adapted this concept for travel. Instead of spanning years, it covers your trip’s duration, with the same set of questions repeated each week. This approach is perfect for travelers who start journaling with enthusiasm but find the task daunting as their journey progresses. With just a short question to answer daily, it’s easy, fun, and incredibly rewarding.

So now that you understand the concept, let’s find out how to make your own travel journal.

I will share two options below; A DIY version and a free printable one . Neither one is better, just pick whichever one suits you best!

two examples of how to make your own jorunal

Option1: DIY travel journal

The first option I’ll share is a true DIY travel journal. You start with an empty paper or notebook and craft your own.

If you are looking for the free printable, scroll down to the free printable travel journal template section.

Materials needed

  • Paper (A4 that you fold in two to make a booklet or any type of notebook)
  • Crafting materials (if you want to make it look nice, but this is not necessary)

How to make your own travel journal

Step 1: find a notebook.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you just fold A4 paper in half and use a stapling machine to bind it. If you buy a simple notebook, or if you go all the way and buy a beautifully designed travel notebook.

I’m a big bullet journal fan, so I just make a collection and dedicate a few pages of my daily bullet journal to this Question-a-day journal. That way it’s integrated with all my other work and travel notes.

But feel free to do whatever fits you. All that matters is that you actually start and that you enjoy working on it. If you need a beautiful design to feel inspired, then by all means go for it. But the design should not be a reason to not get started.

The size of the notebook doesn’t matter either. I usually prefer an A5 format, because it’s small and easily fits in my backpack. But really, anything works. Lined, dotted, squared, or blank paper, all is fine.

A red ring binder notebook

Step 2: Make the pages

At the top of each page write one of the questions below, followed by a prompt for the right date. So weeks 1, 2, 3, etc (depending on how long you’ll be traveling)

  • What did you eat today?
  • Who or what made you smile today?
  • What did you do today?
  • Did you learn something new today? What was it?
  • What is the most beautiful thing you saw today?
  • Did you come across any challenges today? What was it? How did you overcome it?
  • What was your favorite moment of the past week?

A notebook with a page and a question and five weeks to answer it

Of course, there are many different variations of questions you could ask. I found these seven the most interesting ones. But check the section about other prompts below for more question ideas.

I usually don’t add the answer sections for each week yet (I only showed it in the example above to give you an idea), because I don’t know how much space I’ll be needing for my answers. But you could add those if you want to make sure everything fits on one page.

An example of a question a day journal

Step 3: Decorate your travel journal

Now, I’ll admit. I am not the most creative person out here.

I can’t draw and I have the handwriting of an 8-year-old. So when I get crafty with my journal without any template, stickers, stamps, or premade anything, it will look like a mess. And that’s why I go for simplicity,

But if you are nothing like me, this is where you can get crazy. Get out your markers, crayons, glitter, and whatnot to make this travel journal feel like you. You could even add more blank pages so you have more options for photos, doodles, and other fun keepsakes from your trip.

Step 4: Start answering the questions every day

Now that your journal is finished, all you need to do is answer one simple question a day. No endless essays, writer’s block, or not feeling inspired. You’ll know exactly what to write and it will only take a few seconds.

What I like even more, is that even if I forgot to journal one day. I can easily trace back and still answer that one question from yesterday.

Option 2: Free printable travel journal template

Alright, if you’re looking for a printable travel journal, then I’ve got you covered too. Find out how to make your own travel journal from my free printable PDF below!

  • Paper (white A4 that you fold in two to make a booklet)
  • Printer (that can print in a booklet, though most printers nowadays have this setting)
  • A free printable cover

How to use the free printable travel journal pdf

Step 1: choose and download your cover.

For you to use this journal every day and make the most out of it, you need to be super enthusiastic about it. And one way to get you excited is to help you find a design that matches your personality. And that’s why I came up with five different covers so that you can pick one that matches your spirit best.

Choose your favorite down below, or head over to Canva and make your design, as long as you print it on the right side of the paper in landscape shape, it will work too.

Step 2: Print the cover

Print it on an A4 paper and fold it in two. I deliberately put it on landscape and on the right side of the paper, so you can fold it in two and use it as the cover.

Step 3: Print the questions

Now that we have your cover, it’s time for the questions, which you can download here .

They are in A4 PDF format, but you can easily print them as a booklet by using the right printer settings, I explained below.

Print instructions

  • Click print once you’ve downloaded and opened the PDF on your computer
  • Go to printer settings and select booklet
  • Print double-sided

With these settings, your printer will automatically put them in the right order, so that when you fold it in two, you will have a book from question 1-7, and extra notes in the back.

The settings might look slightly different on your computer, but it works the same for every printer.

Feel free to add more blank paper so you’ll have more notes. Or simply print more of the last “notes” page.

DIY travel journal tips

There are a few things that can help you to make the most out of this travel journal.

  • Make this journal your own: the more it feels like your own project, the more enthusiastic you will be to write every day
  • Set a specific time or moment when you will answer the question
  • Start each answer with your current location followed by “:” and the answer. As travelers we visit so many different places that sometimes just seeing the name of a city you were at helps you set the mood and remember the content when you’re reading your travel journal years from now

A DIY travel journal with questions

DIY travel journal variations

As you probably already noticed, there are about 1000 different ways in which you can style your travel journal.

I just shared five printable travel journal templates with you, as well as my super simple but effective handwritten method. But remember. This journal is about you. It should be a design that invites you to write every day and create a beautiful travel memoir for your future self.

So go wild and use which ever design you want.

Besides differences in designs, you can also add different questions that are important to you, or that you want to remember from your trip. I’ll share a few of my other questions below.

I use these when I make my monthly travel journal for longer trips (more about this monthly journal below).

  • Who did you meet today?
  • Did you travel with someone today? Who is it?
  • What was the weather like today?
  • When was the last time you did something kind for someone else?
  • What surprised you today?
  • When was the last time someone did something kind for you?
  • Did you fall for any tourist traps this week?
  • What was your favorite accommodation up until now?
  • Did you do something that scared you this week?

The printable travel journal prompts I shared with you today are for a five-week trip, but of course, you can also use them for a two-week vacation or any other duration.

If you’re traveling longer than 8 weeks, I would advise you to make a journal with a question for each day of the month. That way you’ll have more variation in the types of questions asked and the things you will remember from your trip.

Just check out my list of questions above for more inspiration. And if you want more help, or if you’re not feeling creative, Shoot me a message and I will send the full list of monthly questions as well as a free monthly printable that I use as well!

Now that we understand the benefits of using a travel journal with prompts, let’s delve into how to choose the best one for your needs.

How to Choose the Best Travel Journal with Prompts

Choosing the right travel journal with prompts is essential to ensure that it aligns with your preferences and enhances your travel experience. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the best travel journal:

  • Prompt Categories: Look for a travel journal that offers a variety of prompt categories to suit your interests and writing style. Common categories include daily reflections, cultural experiences, favorite meals, and memorable encounters. Choose a journal that covers topics that resonate with you and will inspire meaningful reflections of your journey.
  • Journal Format: Consider the format of the journal that suits your preference. Some journals offer guided prompts for each day or section, while others provide a combination of prompts and blank pages for more flexibility. Think about how much structure you prefer and choose a format that allows you to express yourself comfortably.
  • Size and Portability: Think about the size and portability of the travel journal. A compact and lightweight journal is ideal for travelers, as it can easily fit into your backpack or carry-on luggage. Consider whether you prefer a pocket-sized journal or a larger one with more writing space.
  • Material and Durability: Assess the material and durability of the journal. Opt for a journal with a sturdy cover that can withstand travel conditions, such as being tossed around in your bag or exposed to different weather elements. Additionally, check if the paper quality is suitable for the type of writing instruments you prefer to use.
  • Additional Features: Look for any additional features that might enhance your journaling experience. Some travel journals may include maps, stickers, or pockets to store mementos like ticket stubs or photographs. These extras can add a fun and interactive element to your journal and make it even more enjoyable to use.
  • Accessibility: Consider whether you prefer a physical journal or a digital option. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. Physical journals provide a tangible and tactile experience, while digital journals offer convenience and the ability to easily make backups or share your entries online.

By considering these factors, you can select a travel journal with prompts that resonates with your style and complements your travel goals. Remember, the best journal is the one that inspires you to write and captures the essence of your unique travel experiences.

Next, let’s explore the top features to look for in a travel journal with prompts.

Top Features to Look for in a Travel Journal with Prompts

When browsing for a travel journal with prompts, it’s important to consider certain features that can enhance your journaling experience. Here are some top features to look for:

  • Thoughtful Prompts: The prompts should be thoughtful and engaging, encouraging you to delve into different aspects of your travel experiences. Look for prompts that inspire creativity, reflection, and capturing vivid details. They should spark your imagination and help you express your thoughts and emotions effectively.
  • Customizability: Consider whether the journal allows for customization. Being able to add personal touches, such as inserting additional prompts or sections specific to your interests, can make the journal even more tailored to your travel style and experiences.
  • User-Friendly Design: Look for a travel journal that has a user-friendly design. This includes easy-to-read prompts, intuitive layouts, and sufficient space for writing. A well-organized journal will make it effortless to navigate through the prompts and ensure a smooth journaling process.
  • Quality Paper: Pay attention to the quality of the paper used in the journal. Opt for thicker, acid-free, and archival-quality paper to ensure that your entries withstand the test of time. This will prevent ink bleeding, smudging, or yellowing, preserving your memories for years to come.
  • Binding and Durability: Consider the binding and durability of the journal. Lay-flat bindings or spiral bindings are ideal, as they make it easier to write and prevent pages from falling out. Additionally, choose a journal that has a durable cover, as it will protect the contents from wear and tear during your travels.
  • Additional Resources: Some travel journals offer additional resources, such as maps, travel tips, packing lists, or language guides. These resources can be valuable companions during your trip and provide practical information that complements your journal entries.
  • Compatibility: If you prefer digital journaling, ensure that the journal is compatible with your preferred writing app or software. Look for travel journals that offer printable PDF or fillable PDF formats, allowing you to type directly into the prompts or print them out for writing by hand.

By considering these top features, you can choose a travel journal with prompts that meets your specific needs and preferences. Remember, the goal is to find a journal that enhances your travel experience, inspires meaningful reflection, and allows you to capture your unique adventures.

I am going on a big trip with my family in October and I thought this travel journal would be the perfect thing to help document our adventures. Although I mostly choose to “journal” through taking pictures of pretty much everything that goes on in my life, I do find real value in actually writing down the special moments in life. I already have a specific travel journal, but I designed this one anyways. It is aimed specifically toward younger kids and the journal pages walk you through what to write down. Super cute and useful, right?

The Importance of a Travel Journal

As travel enthusiasts, we know that every trip we take is a unique experience that we want to remember forever. That's why keeping a travel journal is so important. It's a way to capture all the memories, emotions, and experiences we had during our trips.

Writing in a travel journal is not only about documenting what we did or where we went. It's also about reflecting on our experiences, our personal growth, and the lessons we learned. By taking the time to write down our thoughts and feelings, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

A travel journal is also a great way to keep track of the details of our trips. From flight numbers to hotel reservations, we can write down all the important information we need to remember. This can be especially helpful when planning future trips or when sharing our experiences with others.

In summary, a travel journal is an essential tool for any traveler. It allows us to preserve our memories, reflect on our experiences, and plan for future adventures. So the next time you plan a trip, don't forget to pack a journal and a pen!

Choosing the Right Layout for Your Travel Journal

When it comes to creating a travel journal, choosing the right layout is essential to ensure that you capture all of your memories and experiences in a way that feels organized and visually appealing. There are many different types of layouts to choose from, so it's important to consider what works best for you.

One popular option is an art or doodle style visual travel journal. This type of layout allows you to draw and sketch your experiences, adding a personal touch to your journal. If you enjoy drawing or want to improve your artistic skills, this could be a great option for you.

Another option is a bullet journal layout specifically made for capturing the meaningful moments and experiences of traveling. This type of layout is designed to be simple and easy to use, without requiring a lot of time or energy. It's a great option if you want to focus on writing about your experiences without worrying about design.

If you want to include photos in your travel journal, consider a layout that incorporates space for them. A scrapbook-style layout is perfect for this, as it allows you to add photos, ticket stubs, and other mementos from your trip. Alternatively, you could choose a layout that includes a section for photos alongside your written entries.

Another important consideration is the structure and organization of your travel journal. Some layouts are more structured than others, with specific sections for different types of experiences or activities. Others are more free-form, allowing you to write about whatever you want in any order you choose. Think about how you want to organize your journal and choose a layout that fits your needs.

Ultimately, the right layout for your travel journal is the one that works best for you. Consider your personal preferences, the type of trip you're taking, and what you want to get out of your journal. With the right layout, you'll be able to capture all of your travel memories in a way that feels fun, creative, and organized.

Incorporating Printables into Your Journal

When it comes to travel journaling, incorporating printables can be a game-changer. Not only do they add a personal touch to your journal, but they also make it easy to organize your thoughts and memories.

Printables are templates that you can print out and use to create your journal pages. They come in a variety of designs and layouts, making it easy to find one that fits your style. Plus, they are usually free and easy to use.

One of the benefits of using printables is that they provide structure to your journal. Instead of staring at a blank page, you can use the template as a guide to help you jot down your thoughts and memories. This is especially helpful if you're new to journaling or if you're not sure where to start.

Another benefit of printables is that they offer a variety of templates to choose from. You can find templates for daily, weekly, or monthly journaling, as well as templates for specific types of travel, such as road trips or backpacking. This variety allows you to customize your journal to fit your needs and preferences.

When using printables, it's important to remember that they are just templates. You can add your own personal touch by including photos, ticket stubs, or other mementos from your trip. This will make your journal even more special and unique.

Overall, incorporating printables into your travel journal is an easy and fun way to add structure and personality to your pages. With a variety of templates to choose from, you're sure to find one that fits your style and needs.

Draw and Sketch

If you're artistically inclined, consider adding drawings or sketches to your journal. You can draw pictures of the places you've visited, the food you've eaten, or the people you've met. Even if you're not a great artist, don't be afraid to give it a try. Your sketches don't have to be perfect, they just have to be a representation of your experiences.

Photos are a great way to add visual interest to your journal. You can print out photos and glue them into your journal, or use a Polaroid camera to take instant photos on the go. You can also add captions or notes to your photos to help you remember the details of your trip.

Show Your Personality

Your travel journal is a reflection of you, so don't be afraid to let your personality shine through. You can add stickers, washi tape, or other decorative elements to your journal to make it more colorful and fun. You can also write in your own unique voice, using slang or expressions that are meaningful to you.

Make a List of Things to Do

Before you leave for your trip, make a list of things you want to do or see. This can include museums, restaurants, or other attractions. As you complete each item on your list, make a note of it in your journal. This will help you remember all the fun things you did on your trip.

Use Markers

Markers are a great way to add color and texture to your journal. You can use different colors to highlight important details or create a visual hierarchy. You can also use markers to create callouts or other visual elements that draw attention to specific parts of your journal.

Use Your Imagination

Remember, your travel journal is a creative outlet, so don't be afraid to use your imagination. You can create collages, use different fonts, or experiment with different layouts. The goal is to create a journal that reflects your unique experiences and memories.

Organizing Your Meals and Activities

When traveling, one of the most important things to plan is our meals and activities. We want to make sure we have enough time to try all the local cuisine and experience all the fun activities the destination has to offer. Here are some tips for organizing your meals and activities while on the go.

Breakfast and Lunch

We like to start our day with a hearty breakfast to fuel us for the adventures ahead. We always research the best local breakfast spots ahead of time, so we don't miss out on any must-try dishes. We also make sure to pack some snacks for the day, such as fruit, granola bars, or trail mix, to keep us energized.

For lunch, we usually opt for something quick and easy, like a sandwich or salad. We try to find a local spot to grab a bite, but if we're short on time, we'll grab something from a convenience store or market.

Things to Do

We always make a bucket list of things we want to do and see before we arrive at our destination. This helps us prioritize our time and make sure we don't miss out on anything. We also research any events or festivals that may be happening during our stay and add those to our list.

Once we arrive, we like to book any activities or tours we're interested in right away. This helps us avoid disappointment if they sell out or if we run out of time. We also leave some flexibility in our schedule in case we discover something new we want to try.

Organizing our meals and activities ahead of time helps us make the most of our travels and ensures we don't miss out on any must-try experiences. By starting our day with a hearty breakfast, packing snacks for the day, and making a bucket list of things to do, we can make our travels unforgettable.

DIY Camping Travel Journal [Free PDF Printable Templates!]

Have you ever fell in love with the idea of a travel journal of sorts, but never actually follow through or wonder what to write? Or maybe you looked at the vast amount of pictures from a recent camp trip, posted a few on social media, and were kind of sad that the rest sort of fade away into oblivion?

I have 10,039 photos on my Iphone right now (I just looked!) and there are some pretty amazing memories in them, but here’s the thing..

I NEVER print them off because I get overwhelmed going through them whenever Shutterfly has it’s free 4×6 special! As much as I love the fact that we can take so many pictures with our digital cameras now a days, I sometimes think the simplicity of “getting what you get” from actual film cameras is kind of nice.

I remember being so excited to pick them up from Costco! But atleast 10 of them were blurry, 5 of them has someone blinking or weird red eye, and then I was left with a couple of solid keepers!

ANYWAYS – what if you had a small device that could print off pictures instantly onto a sticky piece of photo paper so that it was manageable to pick the few you like and document them right away in your journal?

And in that journal, you had a small prompt so you don’t go to write and then blank out?

Ya feeling me?

Out of this was born my DIY Camping/Travel Journal with a printable template! I also wanted to show you how I use my Sprocket photo printer to actually get my pictures I love printed and pasted in the journal the same day (even with no cell service!)

Why a DIY Travel Camping Journal?

There’s alot of really beautiful journals out there, but I tend to have the same opinion about them as I do my son’s baby book – there’s a whole lot of redundant questions to fill in, and I end up dreading filling it out!

I like a short and sweet prompt with some room to paste pictures as I like!

The basics are covered in this camping journal, and you can use the opposite page of your journal to add any additional info you like!

Why a Sprocket Photo Printer (as opposed to using a print service or at home printer)

Guys, this thing is smaller than a wallet! That means we can take it with us camping, pick one or two of our favorite pics at the end of the night and print them right away before we forget or get overwhelmed much later!

ALL while still camping!

If you are a procrastinator like me and wait till the yearly photo book to go through your pictures, you might appreciate the immediate satisfaction of a quick print and paste… it feels good to know that your beautiful memories won’t die on the iCloud!

How to make your homemade camping journal

For mine I bought a journal that was  13 x 21 cm ( or 5.11 x 8.27 in) just because I wanted something smaller which would force me to only pick the best pictures and write the most important info!

In the future, I may scale it to a full notebook if there’s enough interest, but that also means more ink to make your camping journal!

Let me know if that’s something you’re interested in and I’ll see what I can do!

6 Free Travel Journal Apps to Create a Beautiful Trip Diary

Use these free travel journal apps to note your thoughts, add photos, map your locations, and share your travel diary with friends.

They say that the trick to remembering anything you learn, think, or feel, is to write it down. Travelling is all about learning, thinking, and feeling, and these free travel journal apps make it easy for you to maintain a trip diary, which you can embellish with photos and share with friends.

1. Find Penguins (Android, iOS): Auto Track Your Travels and Post Updates for Friends

Find Penguins is a smart app that automatically tracks your movements during your trip, while your phone is in your pocket. It also updates the weather, temperature, and altitude, providing a quick snapshot of what the conditions were like that day.

All the data that the app gathers is presented in cool statistics and interactive maps. It's fun to see how you traveled represented on a map as a trail and posts about the noteworthy events. Find Penguins also updates your profile along the way, noting how many countries you went to, how many trips, and so on.

Each post in Find Penguins is called a footprint, which can include text, images, videos, or a combination of these. The app is a bit like using social media, and you can control who sees your posts. If you discover something you want to do while browsing a friend's feed, you can add it to your "bucket list" and save it for later. If you're traveling with someone else, you can add them to your trip to get joint updates on your statistics.

Download: Find Penguins for Android | iOS (Free)

2. Travel Facets (Web, Android, iOS): Turn Your Camera Roll Into an Automatic Album

Travel Facets turns all the photos you take on a trip into an organized album of your travels. The app reads the geotagging location data in each picture you've taken with your phone, matches the date and time with weather records, and maps out the trail. You won't have to lift a finger throughout this process.

Once the album is ready, you can edit it to add captions or additional data. These are called waypoints, and you can even add non-image waypoints manually to note something worthwhile.

You can also skip the entire automatic album maker and make a trip manually. You get more control over each waypoint and how it represents your trip. You'll want to use this mode if you want a robust travel diary, adding your thoughts to create a memorable journal.

Share albums with other Travel Facets users or privately so that only those with the link can see your trip.

Download: Travel Facets for Android | iOS (Free)

3. TravelMap (Web): Simplest Way to Create a Map of Your Travel Blog

Sometimes, you don't want the complexities of an app, social news feeds, auto-tagging, and all that jazz. Instead, all you want is to create a map where you add places of interest to plot your trail, along with photos and journal entries. TravelMap is that simple, free solution.

The simplicity of this web app is its best part. Sign up, create your mini-site with a unique address, and start creating your map. The map is your homepage, where you add places by searching or clicking placemarkers. You can always reorder these too.

Then, add images to your map or write posts and link them to the placemarkers you've already mapped. The result for a viewer is a neatly ordered map showing your journey, with a sidebar that displays images or posts to reveal more about your adventures.

The free version of TravelMap should be enough for most people, as its restrictions are still pretty high (like a maximum of 100 images). However, the premium version removes all such limitations if you need it. You can also check out a cool demo of TravelMap to see its full possibilities.

4. Jauntlet (Web, Android, iOS): Journal That Looks Like a Travel Blog Timeline

The Jauntlet web and mobile app look a bit dated compared to others in this list, but the final output looks so good that it deserves a recommendation. It's a mix of a travel journal and a travel blog, presenting your trip in a neat timeline.

When you sign up, Jauntlet asks you to also connect your Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts. This lets the app import photos from your different profiles. When you make any new post of a city you've been to, add the location to plot it on a map, write a journal entry of what you saw and felt, and select photos to add to the entry.

The final result looks fantastic, as seen in the image above. It's a timeline of where you've been, showing a map on the left, the city and date at the top, and your thoughts and photos on the right. Viewers can also comment under the entry. The whole thing can be played as an automatic slideshow, taking readers through your entire journey.

Download: Jauntlet for Android | iOS (Free)

5. Travel Diaries (Web, Android,iOS): Create an Actual Diary and Optionally Print It

Travel Diaries is a free app to design what a travel journal of your trip will look like and optionally print it too. The app is a virtual open book where you can write beautifully formatted entries.

For each page, you can apply one out of 38 custom layouts, choosing how text and images will appear on the page. Based on the layout, select and upload images from your camera roll, and write text in the simple text editor.

Travel Diaries isn't the best app for on-the-fly travel journaling while you're on the trip. It's more a place to reflect on your journey and compose a good-looking travel diary that you would be proud to show to friends. If you like what you've created, you can pay to download a PDF of the journal or ask the app makers to print and ship the travel journal to you directly.

Download: Travel Diaries for Android | iOS (Free)

6. Traveldays (Web): Travelogue of Photos With Location, Time, and Captions

Traveldays is one of the best online photo album creators to show off your trips and vacations. It's shockingly easy to use, as it takes your photos and automatically turns them into a picture journey of your travels, almost like showing postcards or polaroids to friends.

Upload your pictures in the order you want, and Traveldays will seek their geotagging information to pin it to a Google Map. You can also write small captions on each image. Share the link with your friends, and you're done.

Try a Physical Travel Diary

So which travel journal app should you go for? There's no one-size-fits-all app here. As a rule of thumb, Find Penguins, Travel Facets, and Jauntlet can better log your thoughts while on the trip. TravelMap, Travel Diaries, and Traveldays are better to create a travel diary after you're back from the trip.

But as much as we love these apps, there is a case to be made to use a physical travel diary instead. Not only do many travelers swear by the little diary they carry with them, but How Life Unfolds offers a detailed guide on how to use a travel journal while you're on a trip to make it more memorable than ever before.

What Is A Travel Journal?

A travel journal is a place where you can document your trip memories, whether you’re spending 7 days in Cancun , going on a solo USA road trip , off completing the world’s best hiking trails , or something else.

These can be paper or digital, bound or looseleaf, thin or thick. And— when it comes to how to write in a travel journal — it can include just text or a variety of mediums.

The point is, it offers a way to record what happens to you on the road — though you’re welcome to take your entries and give them a fictional twist for fun!

Creative Travel Journal Ideas

Wondering how to be creative in your journal?

First of all, remember that a journal doesn’t just have to be writing. Use markers, paints, stickers, glitter, and even momentos from your travels to really bring the text to life.

Of course, don’t forget about travel-themed accents, too, like stamps, tickets, postcards, and maps — you can even cut out sections of a map to showcase your favorite destinations.

travel journal writing prompts

If you’re artistic, you might also consider bullet journaling and other techniques to make your journal more visual.

In terms of keeping your travel writing fresh, having details to pull from can be a huge help.

When possible, try to experience a place with all five senses so you have more to draw from later. I personally like to take notes right after any experience I think I may write about later.

Keep in mind, being fully present in this way is also just an overall healthy practice.

If you’re having trouble remembering details, try to sit in silence and do a visualization. Personally, when I do this exercise I aim to not only see myself in a place, but to put myself back in the place so that I am seeing the scene through my own eyes.

Feeling writer’s block?

Sometimes all that it takes is a change of scenery to get inspired again. Try going for a walk or trying a new cafe to see if that helps.

If not, put the journal away, give yourself some mental space, and pick it back up tomorrow.

And if you’re proud of what you’ve written, feel free to post it on social media, share it in an email with friends or, of course, keep it to yourself.

How To Keep A Travel Journal: Quick Tips

As an avid journaler myself, these are some of my personal tips for having fun, feeling creative, and staying inspired while writing.

As with travel tips and trip styles, everyone has their own process when it comes to journaling, and something that works for me may not work for you. Feel free to try out this advice, keep what works, and let go of what doesn’t.

Overall, the goal is that you get something beneficial out of these pages.

Tip #1: Journal when you feel most creative.

For instance, you might choose some mindful ways to start your day and have completing daily journal prompts be one of your morning rituals.

However, if you find you feel more creative in the afternoon or evening, plan your writing for then.

Tip #2: Don’t edit as you write.

Allow your first draft to be all about getting your ideas and thoughts down onto the paper and getting into a creative flow state.

You can always tweak things later.

Tip #3: Remember the power of lists.

This is one of my favorite trip journal ideas!

Writing in lists can be helpful when you’re:

  • having trouble getting started
  • wondering what things to put in a travel journal
  • feeling like your sentences just aren’t flowing together

This way, you can at least get your ideas down and edit them together in a cohesive manner later on.

Tip #4: Write stories.

While this isn’t mandatory, those who are curious how to write a travel journal that’s worth reading should consider writing your thoughts as stories instead of in a stream-of-conscious fashion.

To write a story, make sure you have a beginning, middle, and end. Actually, if you really want to do it right, you should also consider character, plot, setting, and tension.

For a lesson in storytelling, make sure to check out this video on how to improve your creative storytelling skills for more engaging writing:

Tip #5: Go beyond text.

Wondering what to put in a travel journal?

Realize there is no right or wrong answer to this question!

Keep it text-based, or add paintings, drawings, stickers, momentos from your trip, and more.

Personally, I’ve started writing out my journal entries and then drawing them to add some additional creativity and really bring the pages to life.

The Best Travel Journal Apps

Prefer a digital journal option over paper?

There is an app for that!

I’ve talked about my favorite travel safety apps before, but here are a few of my favorite apps for keeping a travel journal:

Travel Diaries .  This free app allows you to create both public and private journals. The layouts are customizable, and you can easily add text, photos, and even maps.

One really neat feature of this app:

You can turn your travel diary into a physical creation to be shipped to your home!

Day One Journal . This is another great travel journal app that makes it simple to record your memories using photos, videos, drawings, and even audio recordings.

The “On This Day” feature allows you to go back in time to revisit your favorite trip moments, while automatic backups ensure your content never gets lost.

Unique app feature:

You can handwrite in your journal using your finger or Apple Pencil.

This travel app has both free and paid premium versions.

how to keep a travel journal

Polarsteps . Dubbed “the personal travel log in your pocket,” Polarsteps is an app that helps you plan your trips as well as record them along the way in a visually-appealing manner.

In fact, this app puts an emphasis on adding experiences to maps and using video to document, so you can really bring your trips back to life later on.

A feature I love:

You can turn your travel memories into a stunning hardcover book to keep!

4. If you could go on a trip with anyone, dead or alive, who would you go with? Where would you go and what would you do?

5. Share a time you were lost or that you lost something while traveling.

6. How has travel changed or shaped you? Note: This is one of my favorite self-discovery journal prompts!

7. Start your travel story with the following: “It was a dark and stormy night…”

8. What is the first vacation memory that comes to mind? Come up with your memory in 10 seconds or less!

13. Take your story from the previous prompt about overcoming a fear while traveling and rewrite it from the perspective of an onlooker.

20. “Travel makes me feel _____.” Why?

travel journal writing

27. Transport yourself to a beautiful beach you’ve visited. Suddenly, a message in a bottle washes up onto the shore. What does it say? How do you react?

28. Here is a road trip journal idea! Write about a road trip you went on, but have someone else from the trip be the narrator. Hint: If you traveled solo, have the car or an onlooker be the narrator.

29. Think of a time you went on a trip that took you out of your comfort zone. Write the end of the story, then the middle, then the beginning.

30. What is one piece of advice you’ve been told by a local while traveling? Have you applied it to your life? Why/why not?

31. If you were to write a travel memoir, what would the first chapter look like?

Bonus: Pair Your Journal Prompts With Self-Care

In my opinion, the best way to enjoy time spent journaling is by pairing it with other self-care activities.

In the video above, I share my top 10 favorite self-care tips and rituals for travelers — though they can also be enjoyed at home!

My recommendation:

Make a day of it! Use the journal prompts and the self-care rituals to create your own DIY retreat .

Free Printable Vintage Travel Journal Pages

My Travels Abroad Preview

Vintage travel journal pages are an ideal find for travel enthusiasts. They’re perfect for art/junk journals and endless DIY projects.

My Travels Abroad Preview

A physical travel journal has quickly become an item of the past. In the age of social media, the vast majority of people record all of their travels digitally. While there is no question that phones make it easy to document travel, there is still nothing quite like a physical record.

I’m not sure of the exact age of the vintage travel log that I’m featuring in this post. Based on similar items that I’ve found online, most likely it’s from the late 1930s or early 1940s. The only date with a year in the journal is 1947.

I love that this travel journal is so comprehensive. In addition to a wealth of blank travel log pages, it includes a cash account section, an address book, pages with assorted flags, pages for documenting certain elements of travel (i.e., hotels, restaurants, churches), and an extensive section entitled “progress of navigation” with pages on everything from types of ships to longitude and latitude to distances between different cities.

While I have not made every single page in the travel log available, I am offering more than 50 pages, one of my largest book collections to date. I’m also offering sets of ATC size cards and journal tags that I created with pages from the travel journal. Enjoy!

How to use vintage book pages

When you’re looking for old book pages, generally, you already know how you’re going to use them. If you’re searching for inspiration or simply want a few additional ideas for your new vintage printables, consider one or more of the following projects.

  • DIY wall art. One of the most popular uses for antique book pages to create one-of-a-kind wall decor. Old book pages are particularly fitting for libraries, classrooms, nurseries, and kids’ bedrooms. But there are so many ways to use book pages. Book pages look great on their own and can be overlaid with text and/or PNGs or transparent background images.
  • Greeting cards. You can use vintage book pages as backgrounds and decorative elements for virtually any type of greeting card .
  • Glass or bottle cap magnets , using the technique that I refined for my sheet music magnets tutorial.
  • Pendant necklaces. Simply swap the magnets for pendant bails to create necklaces .
  • Tile coasters. I created a tutorial for vintage sheet music botanical coasters , which works with any type of paper. Coasters are another project that is ideal for text and/or image overlays.
  • Christmas ornaments. Modify my sheet music ornaments tutorial to create whimsical gifts for the travel enthusiasts in your life. Christmas ornaments also make a great item to sell online and/or at craft fairs.
  • Art journals and other mixed media projects. Old book pages are an often sought after material for art/junk journals and other kinds of mixed media art. Book pages are gorgeous on their own and can be layered with ink, paint, stamps, and more.
  • Scrapbooking. Antique book pages make perfect backgrounds and decorative elements for both physical and digital scrapbooks. They’re also ideal for DIY scrapbook embellishments .

About the vintage travel journal pages

You may use the vintage travel log pages as well as ATC cards and journal tags for as many personal projects as you’d like, which includes classroom use. You may also use them for limited runs of commercial projects (5,000 items or less). Commercial use DOES NOT include made-to-order sites, such as RedBubble and Society6. Commercial items must be flat, finished products (i.e., not Photoshop files) consisting of your own original content. You are not authorized to sell the vintage travel pages, ATC cards, and journal tags, either as individual items or as part of larger collections.

Finally, please don’t distribute the download files. If family, friends, or co-workers would like their own travel journal pages, ATC cards, and/or journal tags, please send them a link to this post, where they can download their own files. Thank you!

My Travels Abroad Collage

I’m offering over 50 full pages from the vintage travel log. All of the pages are 2300 x 3760 pixels with 300 dpi resolution. The pages include the following:

  • Inside cover

  • 12 “progress of navigation” pages, which cover a wide range of topics from types of ships to latitude and longitude to velocity of sound to travel distances between cities

  • A blank travel log page

I’ve split the travel journal pages into seven ZIP folders to give you large files in an easy-to-download formula.

My Travels Abroad ATC Cards 8.5x11 Page Preview

ATC-size digital collage sheet

I’ve created nine ATC size cards from the vintage travel journal. For easy printing, I’ve made them available on one 8.5″ x 11″ page.

Please note: It gets confusing having tons of white space in blog posts. Consequently, I added a black outline around the preview image for the 8.5″ x 11″ page. The digital collage sheet download I’m offering below doesn’t have a black border.

My Travels Abroad Journal Tags 8.5x11 Pages Preview

Journal tags

I’ve created 12 journal tags from the travel log. Journal tags make an awesome addition to art/junk journals and scrapbooks. They’re also great for endless DIY projects. Each tag measures 2.5″ x 4.2″ (750 x 1250 pixels). The journal tags ZIP folder has two 8.5″ x 11″ pages for straightforward at-home printing.

Please note: Again, I’ve added black outlines around the preview pages above. The pages included in the download below don’t have black borders.

Extracting and downloading the full ZIP folders

I’ve created ZIP folders for all of the travel log pages that I offer in this post. Zipped folders allow me to provide high-resolution files for clear, vivid printing and to protect said files against potential theft. Extracting and downloading the ZIP folders from Google Drive is a fairly simple process. Please note that it does take a little time to download each folder in full.

  • When you click on the download link, select the Open with ZIP Extractor option at the top of the page.
  • The folder will open in a new window. The files will download.
  • Once the files have downloaded, click Extract Now .
  • When the files have extracted and uploaded, click View Extracted Files .
  • Double click on the folder.
  • To download, select the files you’d like to download. Click the three horizontal dots More Actions button. Choose Download .

I recommend moving your downloaded files out of your downloads folder and into your main photos folder. I also recommend creating a backup copy of the files on an external hard drive or cloud storage drive. Keep your files in a folder called “Vintage Travel Journal Pages” or something similar, so you’re able to find them again easily.

Now you’re ready to use your new vintage printables for home decor and a wide array of craft projects!

Living Room Mock Up Travel Theme

Printing vintage book pages

When you use old book pages to make your own wall art and other home decor, my personal recommendation for at-home printer paper is Finestra Art Paper . I always select Finestra for my own projects because the paper features an acid-free matte surface that drinks the ink quickly, producing beautiful, vibrant images. I prefer the results that Finestra produces over regular printer paper, card stock, and presentation paper.

Finestra does not sponsor me to promote their product. It’s the product that I love and come back to time and time again after years of creating wall decor for blog posts and personal projects.

8' x 10' Premium Arctic Matte Inkjet Photo Paper - 100 Sheets

For all other DIY and journaling projects, I recommend white card stock . When you’re using antique book pages for scrapbook embellishments, greeting cards , and mixed media art, it’s not as important that the images are really vivid. When you’re creating projects that involve several coats of diamond glaze or Mod Podge, such as pendant necklaces , glass magnets , or tile coasters , you won’t be able to tell any difference in the finish of the paper you’ve used. Consequently, it makes sense to use card stock, which is less expensive than art paper and still extremely durable and high-quality.

Neenah Index Cardstock, 8.5' x 11', 90 lb/163 gsm, White, Lightweight, 94 Brightness, 300 Sheets...

Kids Travel Journal Printable [Downloadable PDF Template]

Keeping a kids travel journal is not just a great way to remember the details of your trip, but it also captures those precious memories that may later be swept away in the fog of our memories.

Your kid’s journal will become an heirloom more precious than any other souvenirs you can bring back from your trip. Plus, a journal is an excellent way to keep the kiddos entertained during road trips, long plane rides, and other inevitable travel downtime!

While any old notebook or journal works, if you want to encourage kids to keep track of their experiences, you need to provide some travel journal ideas.

Kid travel journal writing

Kids Travel Journal Printables

One thing I’ve learned from my daughter’s teacher is that writing is easier for kids if they are given a writing prompt.  To design these travel journal pages, I talked to my girl about what things she likes to remember from her travels and what types of prompts might make journaling easier.

With her input I put together the following kid travel journal printable pages–including a cover and two inside pages. So if you are looking for a DIY travel journal for your kids, look no further! And if you prefer ready-made kid travel journals — keep reading because I have some options that I like down below.

With this free printable travel journal cover, your child can personalize their journal with their name, indicate where on the map they are going, and record the dates of the trip.

Kid Travel Journal Printable Cover for download at We3Travel.com

Just click here to download the free PDF of the   kid travel journal printable cover .

I’ve also put together two interior pages. Just print as many of these (double-sided if you can) for the number of days of your trip.

The first page lets your child record the date and location and choose how they felt about the day (loved it, liked it, meh, ugh, tired, or sick.) Kids can also write about what they saw, the best thing they ate, where they stayed, and their favorite part of the day.

There are also icons to select how they traveled (plane, train, car, taxi, subway, boat, bike or walking) and what the weather was like (hot, sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, rainy, snowy or cold.)

Kid Travel Journal Printable Interior Page downloadable at We3Travel.com

Click here to download the interior page PDF of the  kid travel journal printable .

The second interior page gives plenty of room to draw a picture that represents their day, to help those that are more visual than verbal. It also provides space to write about something they learned to keep track of all the amazing education that comes through travel like facts about a place they visited, a new word in a new language, or something about the culture you are visiting.

Before you leave just print out the number of pages you need and staple it, bind it, or put it in a pocket folder with room to save ticket stubs, programs, and more.

When on the road, don’t wait until the meltdown at bedtime to think about writing in journals. Stick it in your day bag along with some crayons and pencils and use it as a way to keep kids entertained while waiting to be served at restaurants or other downtime throughout the day.

By the way, if you really want to get your kids involved in the travel planning as well as the travel journaling, use these vacation planner worksheets for kids !

Many thanks! Sincerely appreciate the free downloads. Your time & talent is appreciated.

These look fab, I’ve pinned to print off in the pre-holiday panic

Thank you for creating theses pages We3Travel, they are beautiful! I’m just seeing this while on a trip in Spain without printing facilities, but will be using thes on our next trips!

I’m so glad you like them! Have a great trip. We loved visiting Spain a few years ago.

My Daughters School (Palm Valley Elem) shared this for as a summer activity! I am so glad they did!! this is exactly what I was looking for for my 8 year old! she needs the writing prompts! I am going to add them to a journal and add a few “pockets” for her to add ticket stubs etc

That’s great!! I made this a few years ago and I feel like I should update it but glad it still works for others!

Love your travel pages, but they would not print for me. Am taking my 10 yr old grand and parents to the Jersey Shore in July and making a list of crafty and fun activities to do with her. Since your pages won’t print, they have still given me an idea of making a simple journal with her and use your ideas as prompts for her to write and sketch. Thanks for the cool ideas.

I’m so sorry to hear they wouldn’t print for you. Were you able to download them or did you have trouble accessing them?

Free Printable Travel Journal for Kids Post Preview: Looking for fun activities, travel games, and journaling pages for traveling with kids? This free 28-page travel journal for kids will be a great addition to your next trip!

I love doing family travel. Sure, it can get expensive and sometimes it requires a lot of planning, but I love what we have gained as a family and as individuals by making travel a priority. Not that we take big trips all the time, but we’ve tried to make sure that our kids have been able to travel more than we did at their age.

Because I love family travel, I wanted to offer up a fun and free packet that you might enjoy before, during, and after a family trip. This free Travel Journal for Kids can offer them some travel planning, fun activities, games, journaling, and more.

Travel Journal for Kids (Free 28-page Journaling and Games Printable Packet)

Don’t be daunted by the size of this journal. One of the great things about this project is that kids of all ages can pick and choose which pages are right for them. Since it’s free, there is no pressure to use it all.

They might find that there are some pages they don’t want to use at all, while there are others that they want to print out multiple times. Journaling with kids is great when they have some flexibility. Let them figure out what works best for them.

Again, since this packet is free, you can feel good about it even if they decide just to use one page.

Fun Supplies for Your Travel Journaling Pages

I don’t know about you, but one of the things I love about journals and journaling pages is getting to use some fun supplies. I can’t help it – I just love school, office, and art supplies.

While your kids don’t need anything beyond a pen or pencil for the Travel Journal for Kids packet, it’s always special to get a few cool new supplies. This could especially make it a little more interesting for a long road trip.

I love the Sakura Pigma Micron pens ! They are my go-to for my planner and, really, for just about everything else. You can get sets that are all black but in varying widths . You can also get them in a variety of colors .

Nude cruise to set sail from Florida next year: Here are the starting costs, itinerary

free travel journal pdf

The "Big Nude Boat" cruise, which allows passengers to bare all − yes, even at the buffet − is set to sail from Florida next year.

The "11-day adventure" to the Caribbean is set for the first two weeks of February on the Norwegian Pearl, according to the Bare Necessities Tour & Travel website.

"Bare Necessities’ newest nude cruise is a private island double-dip with a brand new travel partner!" the company wrote on its website.

The trip which embarks from Miami, includes "an exclusive visit to an idyllic private island" in The Bahamas as well a another exclusive stop on the way back to the Port of Miami.

"Two opportunities to enjoy a new slice of Bare-adise, coupled with a beautiful selection of Eastern Caribbean island stops, will make this a can’t miss Big Nude Boat experience," the travel company posted.

Why cruises are popular with swingers: 'What happens on the ship ... stays on the ship'

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

Big Nude Boat cruise sailing dates and destinations:

The ship departs from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14.

The itinerary includes stops at the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia.

How much does the Big Nude Boat cruise cost?

Rates for an inside cabin start at $2,000 per person.

They stretch as high as $33,155 for the top room on the ship: a Haven three-bedroom garden villa.

Laws of the land (and sea)

Guests are encouraged to park their bare behinds on towels provided on board in areas including the pool deck and the buffet area, according to the website.

"Passengers can easily follow our rule on nudist etiquette by always placing a towel down before sitting," it reads. "Remember to pack a swimsuit; not all excursions are clothing optional."

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. But How Does the Worm Get in Your Brain?

And other questions about parasites.

An image of a tapeworm, Taenia solium, with four suckers in a micrograph film.

By Dana G. Smith and Dani Blum

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s disclosure that a doctor apparently found a dead worm in his brain has sparked questions about what brain parasites are, the damage they can cause and how, exactly, they get there.

How do parasites turn up in people? And what can they do to the brain?

Brain parasites encompass far more than worms. There are “legions” of organisms that can affect the brain, said Scott Gardner, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who specializes in parasites. In addition to worms, common brain parasites include single-celled organisms such as Toxoplasma gondii and some amoebas.

The damage varies depending on the type of parasite and where it ends up in the brain. “Some of them actively invade the tissues and destroy tissues,” said Dr. Daniel Pastula, chief of neuro-infectious diseases and global neurology at University of Colorado Medicine. Others cause problems because of the inflammatory reaction that they trigger.

Humans are typically exposed to tapeworms through raw or undercooked food or through food contaminated with feces.

“A lot of these things are transmitted to humans through feces,” said Dr. Edith L. Graham, a neurologist at Northwestern Medicine.

Doctors consulted by The New York Times speculated that Mr. Kennedy described symptoms of an infection with larvae from the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, one of multiple types of tapeworm that can infect the brain. When a person accidentally swallows pork tapeworm eggs, the eggs hatch in the intestines, and the larvae can travel to other organs, including the brain. There, they form cysts, causing a condition known as neurocysticercosis .

It can take months, or even years, for people to show signs of infection. Symptoms vary based on how many cysts develop and where they are. (Cysts can form in the eyes, muscles and spinal cord.) Generally, though, people with neurocysticercosis experience headaches and seizures, and they sometimes feel confused, struggle to pay attention and have issues with balance. The condition can be fatal.

Another type of parasite that can affect the brain is known as a brain-eating amoeba . Infections of this kind are extremely rare but can lead to a potentially fatal swelling of the brain or spinal cord, said Tajie H. Harris, an associate professor of neuroscience at the University of Virginia. The organisms enter through the nose when people swim in lakes and rivers, and then travel to the brain. People have also been infected through using neti pots or other sinus rinses with untreated or non-sterile water.

Toxoplasma gondii

One of the most common parasitic brain infections is toxoplasmosis. Over 40 million people in the United States may be infected with the parasite that causes that infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . People can be infected by eating undercooked meat or shellfish that is contaminated, by drinking contaminated water or by accidentally swallowing the parasite when they encounter it in cat feces, as when cleaning litter boxes.

The parasite that causes toxoplasmosis can linger in humans for years — potentially, for someone’s entire life — but most people will not develop symptoms. “For the most part, our immune system does an amazing job at just handling and dealing with this parasite, allowing us to live our lives without ever knowing,” Dr. Harris said.

But it can make some people feel like they have the flu. People with compromised immune systems are at risk of serious illness and brain damage if infected, and developing fetuses can be severely affected if pregnant women are exposed. (That’s why doctors sometimes advise pregnant women to avoid coming into contact with cat litter.)

How do you figure out if you have a parasite?

“You wouldn’t know yourself, unless someone is looking,” Dr. Gardner said. Sometimes a patient’s blood can be tested for antibodies that are produced in response to a parasite. In other cases, doctors diagnose infections with an M.R.I. or C.T. scan.

Treatment options vary because infections span such a wide range. Many are treatable with antiparasitic drugs, which patients may need to take for weeks. Doctors may also prescribe steroids to help with inflammation. Some patients will undergo surgery to remove cysts.

In the United States, severe infections from brain parasites are rare, Dr. Pastula said, “but in other parts of the world, they’re more common.”

Fortunately, many of these infections are preventable, Dr. Pastula said. To lower your risk, especially while traveling internationally, he advised washing hands thoroughly before you eat or prepare food, cooking food properly and ensuring that the water you’re drinking is clean.
