How to create your own magazine
Step 1: add compelling photos and graphics.
Appealing images are essential to capturing your audience. Make sure they are high quality: at least 300 ppi for print magazines, and 200 ppi for digital. What if a magazine creator isn’t a professional photographer? You can access free stock images, with sites like Free Range Stock , or paid services like Shutterstock . Marq has image editing options to help you perfect your shots to achieve striking quality.
Step 2: Printing considerations
If you print your magazine, consult with a professional printing service. Image quality needs to be higher than it would be for a newsletter or newspaper, and you will want to use a thick, glossy paper stock. Since magazines are often folded and stapled, getting the pages in the right order can be complex. In Marq, the magazine templates are laid out in cover to cover order. Work with your printing company to specify what kind of binding you want. To achieve the classic magazine look, use full bleed in your document. The bleed is the area of your magazine to be trimmed before shipping to your readers. Set the bleed to 0.125 or 0.25 inch so there isn’t a white margin around your images.
Step 3: Find the right message and typography
The way you write your magazine articles and visually present your text will depend on who your audience is. Different typefaces have different connotations, and in general, serif typefaces are optimal for print viewing, while sans serif typefaces are designed for the web. Different sections of your magazine call for different presentation styles. Use variants of one font family to give a consistent (but unique) feel to individual sections. Don’t sacrifice legibility for variety—by using different font sizes, weights, and upper and lower case, you can get good mileage from a single font family without looking too busy. Verify that your text is easily readable, will encourage your audience to share your articles, and that the words are complemented by the images.
Step 4: Determine the purpose of your magazine
Different types of magazines have different purposes. Some are heavily informational, while others aim primarily to entertain. Here are some goals to keep in mind as you put your magazine together:
- Inform —Articles should add value for the reader. The text of the magazine should be accurate, thoroughly researched, and well-written.
- Entertain —People subscribe to print and digital magazines because they’re fun. The combination of photography, graphic design , and human interest articles should draw your readers in.
- Entice to buy —Magazines and catalogs are ideal showcases for goods and services. With the advent of digital magazines, your audience can be directed immediately to the point of sale.
- Spark debate —Journalism should expose readers to a variety of viewpoints. When magazine articles go viral, you have the opportunity to drive cultural conversation.
- Persuade —Both short- and long-form writing ultimately have the goal of persuading readers to a given point of view or course of action. Make sure that your writing is clear, concise, and is tightly focused.

The 4 Best Free Online Magazine Makers
Whether you're looking to create more engaging presentations or create a digital magazine, here are the four best free magazine makers online.
If you’re looking for a more engaging way to present a PDF, or perhaps trying to distribute a digital magazine, then you’ll be pleased to learn that there are a huge number of different options out there for you to try.
If you want to make a digital magazine, but don’t know how, then there are plenty of websites out there that make things easy for you. Here are four of the best.
1. FlipHTML5
Maybe you don’t know so much about creating online magazines, which is why FlipHTML5 is a great resource to do just that. FlipHTML5 is an online digital publishing platform and flip-book creator that is easy to use and easy to learn. It's built entirely in HTML, which is great if you don't want to learn how to build a website from scratch with HTML .
If you’re looking to get started with FlipHTML5 but don’t know where to begin, then all you need to do is choose from one of FlipHTML5’s ready-made templates. There are over 10 different professional quality templates to choose from here, which you can entirely customize yourself.
There’s an online editor here, so you can change or create however you want. Multimedia such as videos, links, audio, and images are all supported, so that you and anyone else can read and work anywhere and anytime.
Once you’ve created your very own digital magazine, you’ll be able to distribute it using your custom domain provided by FlipHTML5. You can even customize your domain to remain in line with you or your company’s branding.
If you have your own server, you can export your books to a local computer and host them there on your own website. Otherwise, FlipHTML5 offers users free online hosting for magazines, which means that you don’t have to worry about any of that yourself.
All of this is available for free, but there are premium plans available only to those who are willing to pay a monthly subscription. These include the removal of ads and watermarks, larger storage sizes, longer magazines, more magazines, and more.
2. Mobissue
Next up on this list comes Mobissue, a free online magazine maker with support for a downloadable desktop version as well. If you’re looking for something versatile or which will let you expand your options as you gain more confidence, Mobissue might be the best option for you.
Mobissue lets you create online magazines quickly and easily with minimal fuss. All you need to do is upload a PDF to the Mobissue service, and you’ll be able to begin editing it at your own volition.
The design options are extensive, with different options for layouts and composition being readily available. You can input background music for your readers to really set the mood if you so wish, and can run your magazine through a variety of different browser prototypes to make sure that your creation works for all of your readers.
If you’re worried about publishing, Mobissue has you covered there. You can create a portfolio homepage if you wish, and then customize it however you want from there. Your different issues will appear there, so you can publish as many as you need without worrying about distribution.
If you want to add in more features like notifications, ads, or subscribers, then Mobissue can handle that as well. These features are all available for free, but there are more available for those of you willing to pay a monthly subscription fee.
These premium plans add more features such as removal of the watermark, longer magazines, and more features such as drag and drop content blocks and configurable element properties.
3. PubHTML5
If you’re looking for something a little more straightforward to use, then PubHTML5 might be a better option for you. There are plenty of video tutorials that feature on the website to give you ideas, tips, and inspiration, so you never have to worry about getting lost in the editor.
To begin with, PubHTML5 is simple. All you need to do is import your PDF and input some text, images, and videos that you want to share into the PubHTML5 editor, and from there you’re good to go.
All elements of your online magazine are customizable. You can import pre-designed templates if you want, and can adjust them however you want with various backgrounds, colors, buttons, and many more.
If you’re worried about distribution, you can easily share PubHTML5 online magazines and to all of the best social media apps and sites , and the various admin and management tools available make editing and updating book info easy when you do.
What’s cool here is that PubHTML5 has in-built statistics management as well, and can show you real-time insight into a whole host of information. Audience engagement and preferences, for example, as well as reports on zoom patterns, page views, time spent on individual pages, widget interactions, and more.
PubHTML5 is entirely free, but there are premium options for those of you who want them. For example, if you want to remove ads or watermarks, you’ll require a monthly subscription. If you want to make more magazines or longer magazines, then you’ll need to subscribe to the premium service as well.

These 12 Wrinkle-free Travel Clothes Will Be the M.V.P.s of Your Suitcase — and They’re Starting at $23
They pack like a dream.
If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.
Travel + Leisure
I’m one of those people who can’t leave the house in good conscience with wrinkles all over my outfit. But it’s hard to avoid when you travel. I’ve tried every method — rolling things up Marie Kondo-style, laying each item flat and piling it, using packing cubes — but wrinkles are just a reality of the jet-set lifestyle. Sure, I could bring a travel steamer or mini iron, but there's not always room for one in my carry-on. Or, I could curate a wardrobe packed with wrinkle-resistant tops, bottoms, and one-pieces . That way I can skip the part where I have the ironing board set up and my travel companions are impatiently scrolling through their phones because they’re inevitably ready before me.
Some clothes are specially constructed to be wrinkle-resistant, and you’ll find that in the product messaging. But other times, you just have to look at the materials on the label. Some fabrics, like linen and cotton, though great for the warmer weather, are notorious for wrinkling at the drop of a hat. Others have the natural ability to resist and repel wrinkles. These fabrics include (but are not limited to) Supima cotton, lyocell (brand-name Tencel), an eco-friendly acetate called triacetate, charmeuse, and certain types of polyester. Luckily, a lot of your favorite brands are already on board with the convenience of wrinkle-free clothes. Among them are Athleta, Everlane, Madewell and Summersault. And of course, you can dig around Amazon and find your fair share of wrinkle-resistant clothes that travel well, too.
Below, I've rounded up 12 of my favorites, from tanks and polos to rompers and cover-ups. Bonus points for the pieces that include other travel-friendly features, like UPF protection and moisture-wicking fabrics. Bottom line: packing these pieces will make your trip go a lot smoother. Your travel buddies can thank me later.
Timeson Three-quarter-sleeve Blouse
A crisp white blouse is a travel M.V.P., but it’s usually made of quick-to-wrinkle cotton. Not this sheer Timeson blouse from Amazon, though. It’s got wrinkle-resistant polyester (with a touch of stretchy spandex) and has a more relaxed silhouette than a traditional Oxford shirt with its tunic-style design. My white blouses are in constant rotation when I travel because they’re so versatile, and this one is unique in that its precise length allows it to look great tucked in or left loose. Plus, it pairs nicely even with yoga pants. Take it from this shopper : “I packed this blouse in a suitcase for a trip and it didn't wrinkle."

Twirl your way through the vineyards in this pretty poplin PrettyGarden dress made with wrinkle-resistant polyester. Its pleated skirt, ruffled hem, and keyhole front make it fun and flirty for any warm-weather destination. And, you can dress it up or down depending on your accessories, so wear it straight out of your suitcase for whatever's next on your itinerary. According to one Amazon customer , it “washes well, never wrinkles" and is "very classy and feminine."
Babaton New Power Blazer
This long, versatile blazer by Aritzia-favorite brand Babaton is my go-to for travel and the perfect layer to help any outfit transition from day to night. I’ve worn it to elevate a white-tee-and-jeans look and over a bodycon dress for a bit more modesty. Its open front, collarless design and ruched, three-quarter sleeves keep it looking chic instead of stuffy, and the fabric is made of eco-friendly triacetate with a touch of polyester — which is the reason why I can literally ball it up in my suitcase and it will never wrinkle.
Summersalt The Silky Luxe Beach to Brunch Wrap Skirt
With Summersalt's Beach to Brunch Wrap Skirt, You can pack up your beach bag with all of the essentials and not have to worry about your swimsuit cover-up getting smushed by your towel, books, snacks, and sunscreen. It's made with silky charmeuse fabric and is specifically designed to resist wrinkles. As the name implies, this skirt can be worn as part of your post-beach outfit thanks to its stunning print, stylish details, and maxi skirt length that provides the right amount of coverage for a restaurant or walk around the city.
Amazon Essentials Lightweight Open-front Cardigan
I’m so glad cardigans are on-trend again because they truly come in handy when I visit places that are hot during the day and chilly at night (Mexico City and Lisbon, I’m talking to you). Roll up this lightweight, best-selling Amazon Essentials cardigan and pop it in your tote without worry because it’s got modal and polyester mixed in, so it won’t look crumpled when you pull it out at night. A reviewer confirmed that it's “wrinkle-resistant and packs well,” and you have your choice of 20 colors and prints to help it maximize your travel wardrobe.
REI Co-op Sahara Bermuda Shorts
Outdoor activities in warmer temps call for shorts that are comfy and rugged, and this pair by REI Co-op is the brand’s answer for Bermuda shorts fans. Not only are these water-repellent, stretchy, and outfitted with UPF sun protection, but they’re also wrinkle-resistant thanks to their resilient nylon construction. I’m not even a regular hiker, but there seems to be a spontaneous hike on almost every extended trip that I take, so this pair is going in my cart for summer.
Madewell Pull-on Wide-leg Pants in Softdrape
Another great fabric option for the wrinkle-free travel life is lyocell — also known by its brand-name Tencel — a sustainable type of rayon that’s known for being super soft, durable, and breathable. That’s what Madewell’s Softdrape fabric is made up of, making its elastic-waist Wide-leg Pants the perfect pair for all-day wear. They can be dressed up or down and paired with anything from a T-shirt or tank to a button-down blouse or bodysuit. According to one reviewer, "They're so comfortable, flattering and stylish. The material is super lightweight and flowy. They'd be flattering on any body type."
Lands’ End Moisture-wicking UPF Sun Curved Hem Tunic Tank Top
Land's End
A soft polyester blend fabric is responsible for making sure that this performance tank top won’t wrinkle, and its UPF 50 sun protection helps shield you from UV rays on long walks and hikes. The ribbed top also wicks away sweat and resists odors, comes in eight cute colors, and pairs perfectly with leggings and shorts. I wore a top just like this to go off-roading in a military tank in the Czech Republic, and wish that I had it for my jeep tour of Sintra, Portugal. It also would have come in handy during my Kenyan safari. Moral of the story? Your travels will often present you with hot-weather, open-sun activities, so you’ll never regret packing a top that does as much as this one does. Use the code " FAVORITES " to get select colors on sale for as little as $23.
Athleta Essential Tee Dress
You’ll always find an occasion to wear this T-shirt dress from Athleta, a brand that masters the intersection between stylish and high-performing activewear and travel clothes. The dress has a playful, flowy shape constructed of breathable, wrinkle-resistant Supima cotton and comes in four colors, including classic gray and black (plus bold hues like orchid pink and rosewood red). The dress makes getting ready a breeze, too — just put it on and pair it with sandals or sneakers, and you’re good to go. One customer wrote, ”I took to Hawaii for spring break… [it was a] comfortable, cute, easy-to-pack, pretty dress."
Basudam Golf Polo Shirt
If a round of tennis, pickleball, or golf is on the agenda, this wrinkle-free polyester polo shirt should be in your suitcase. Its modified V-neck collar gives it a visual twist to make it more fashionable than your average polo. It’s also moisture-wicking and stretchy enough to handle a day filled with sports, but polished enough to keep you looking put together for post-game drinks or grub. “Female golfer here," an Amazon shopper began their review. "This shirt will be my go-to and I plan on buying every color. It's lightweight, super cute, and comfortable."
Everlane The Supima High-neck Riviera Dress
The importance of a comfy midi or maxi dress that doesn’t cling can’t be overstated. I’ve had at least one in my luggage since I became a travel writer, and this High-neck Riviera Dress from Everlane that's made with wrinkle-resistant Supima cotton fits the bill beautifully. It’s the perfect style to pair with Birkenstocks or with your favorite pair of white, all-day walking sneakers. “I am not usually a huge dress girl, but I will definitely be wearing this for spring and upcoming summer months, too," an Everlane shopper raved, adding that they "have already paired it with a jean jacket and black slides."
Athleta Brooklyn Utility Romper
Another wardrobe essential that I’d never travel without is a romper or jumpsuit, as one-pieces just make an easy no-brainer for getting dressed and looking put together fast. They also cinch my waist and skim my figure in a way that leaves me feeling confident and securely covered to handle whatever's on my itinerary for the day. Athleta’s Brooklyn Utility Romper takes it the extra mile by being wrinkle-free, too. Plus, it has UPF-protective fabric and resists snags and rips. According to one reviewer, it's “lightweight and simple" and you can "dress it up with a jacket or just go sleeveless."

Why We Shouldn’t Always Use Translation Apps When We Travel
Ai-assisted apps make navigating language barriers easier. but at what cost.
- Copy Link copied
Language apps can be helpful when we travel, but they also have their shortcomings.
I have always loved languages. I began learning French and German in middle school, and by the time I graduated from high school, I had two years of upper-level French and Italian, three years of upper-level German, and a foundation in opera, which gave me a reverence for the art of translation. In college, I studied French medieval poetry and Norse sagas.
My education was a rarefied experience, but those early forays into communication have shaped the way I think of language and its potential to foster connection. Today, the learning landscape has changed. We have powerful computers in our pockets, and translating at the touch of a button is the norm; apps such as Duolingo can help us with our Greek, Hindi, and Haitian Creole. Sometimes, as with Google Translate, our devices even speak for us, and suddenly, a once-insurmountable language barrier is removed. All this, I think, has its pros and cons.
To err is human, but machines are not divine. When we tap our words into an app, we lose the colors, rhythms, tones, animation, and thoughts that make communicating across languages so interesting. Often, what’s missing is context: Tech can’t understand linguistic nuances or read the situation, because it can’t see and assess the scene or moment. While these programs can learn grammar rules, they lack the leaps of thought humans are capable of. Without intuitive intelligence, they can’t make sense of new information on the fly.
Both Google and Microsoft have strong translation apps.
As a traveler, I worry that sole reliance on this technology renders our conversations on the road transactional and impersonal. With apps, the potential for the quantity of our interactions increases—we are able to ask for more things—but the quality of the connection can diminish. After all, the people we meet on our travels are not just avatars: They have personalities, full lives, and unique perspectives on their home. If we’re lucky, sometimes they’ll share it with us. My hope is that we, as global citizens searching for connection, can see these technologies as an aid, instead of depending on them alone to navigate new linguistic terrain.
Just because translation apps exist doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to learn a language in preparation for a trip. Before I travel, I brush up on my conversational skills: I’m quick to pick up a grammar workbook, watch videos about pronunciation, or even schedule a language session with a friend. Streaming TV shows or films from the country also helps get my brain in the right mode before I leave home.
Even when I’m competent in a language, I still try to carry a phrase book when I’m in a foreign place. At the very least, I print out a list of essential words and phrases, including greetings and terms such as “excuse me,” “thank you,” and “bathroom.” More often than not, I’ve found this low-tech approach endears me to people and is met with grace and goodwill, interpreted as active interest in a place.
I’m still trying to figure out how to navigate our brave new world, and when I do use translation apps, I try to do so sparingly. Instead of instinctually pulling out my phone, I ask myself, Do I really need an app to try to say what I’m going to say? Most often, I employ these technologies when my language skills aren’t a match for the level of specificity that I need and I don’t have the option of human-to-human translation. On a recent trip to Japan, I used DeepL’s scan-to-translate feature to “read” about treats available to order by mail, and turned to Google Translate to communicate with a pharmacist so I could get pain relievers for cramps.
In situations like these—phone in hand—I also pay careful attention to my body language. When appropriate, I make eye contact. An app may make it easier to communicate, but that’s just one facet of the exchange.
If all of these efforts fail, I’m prepared to point and smile, to use nonverbal cues. Is this clumsy and with more risk of embarrassment? Perhaps. But we’ve employed this form of connection for thousands of years. Language, after all, gives us a frame we can use to make sense of our experiences, however simple, however crude. And we don’t always need an app for that.

Airlines must cough up cancellation cash and can no longer hide fees under new federal rule
A federal rule announced Wednesday will require airlines to quickly give cash refunds — without lengthy arguments — to passengers whose flights have been canceled or seriously delayed, the Biden administration said.
“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them — without headaches or haggling,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.
The rule from the Transportation Department says passengers who decline other reimbursement like travel credits are to get cash refunds.
It applies when a flight is canceled or has a “significant change,” the administration said.A “significant change” includes when departure or arrival times are three or more hours different from the scheduled times for domestic flights or six hours for international flights, and when the airport is changed or connections are added, it said.
Passengers are also to get refunds when their baggage is 12 hours late in delivery for domestic flights.
The new rule comes after promises to hold airlines accountable after major disruptions that made travel hell for passengers, including the 2022 Southwest Airlines meltdown , which resulted in almost 17,000 significantly delayed or canceled flights and a missing baggage nightmare.
The Transportation Department said that the new rule means refunds are automatic and that "airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops."
Also announced Wednesday was a rule requiring airlines to more clearly disclose so-called junk fees upfront, such as surprise baggage or other fees, the department said.
It said that rule is expected to save fliers around $500 million a year.
The surprise fees are used so tickets look cheaper than they really are, and then fliers get the unwelcome surprise of fees on checked bags, carry-on bags or reservation changes — or even discounts that are advertised but apply to only part of the ticket price, officials said.
Airlines will also have to tell fliers clearly that their seats are guaranteed and that they don't have to pay extra to ensure they have seats for flights, according to the Transportation Department.
Airlines for America, an industry trade group, said that its member airlines “offer transparency and vast choice to consumers from first search to touchdown” and that they do offer cash refunds.
The 11 largest U.S. airlines returned $10.9 billion in cash refunds last year, an increase over $7.5 billion in 2019 but slightly down from $11.2 billion in 2022, the group said.
“U.S. airlines are providing more options and better services while ticket prices, including ancillary revenues, are at historic lows,” Airlines for America said.
Left out of the federal changes announced Wednesday are those involving "family seating fees," but the Transportation Department said in a statement that "DOT is planning to propose a separate rule that bans airlines from charging these junk fees."
Travelers have complained to the Transportation Department that children weren’t seated next to accompanying adults, including in some cases young children, department officials said last year.
Fees on bags specifically have made up an increasing amount of airline revenues, the Transportation Department said Wednesday in announcing the new rules.
A Transportation Department analysis found that airline revenue from baggage fees increased 30% from 2018 to 2022, while operating revenue — which is from the flights themselves — increased by only half that amount, the department said.
