Everybody say "love!" We're headed around the world in pursuit of the very best cities welcoming the LGBTIQ+ community. These are the kinds of places that understand that life's meant for celebrating; whether it be rowdy drag shows that thrill with sass or thumping dance clubs that party on till sunrise.  

Follow us to some of  the most progressive, inclusive and accepting destinations around the world where you can go to really show your pride.

Sydney, Australia 

2023 Pride dates: This year, WorldPride, the global bi-yearly event that rotates between different cities, was held in Sydney  in February. That event coincided with Sydney’s famous  Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras , which is one of the largest LGBTIQ+ celebrations on the planet and takes place during February or March of each year. But that doesn't mean the celebrations are over. You can still find events happening all around the city for Sydney Pride Month in June. 

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  The heart of gay Sydney is the Darlinghurst neighborhood , which is conveniently located near Sydney’s central business district and is easily accessible by the city’s mass transit system.

Though Australia only legalized gay marriage in 2017, the country has long been a welcoming place for the queer community. Sydney is the LGBTIQ+ center of Australasia and the South Pacific and has developed a global reputation for its inclusivity. Not only does the city have excellent LGBTIQ+ nightlife, such as the expansive, three-story  Stonewall Hotel , but it also has a deeply queer culture that celebrates LGBTIQ+ art and history.  The Darlinghurst Bookshop  has been selling queer books, magazines and films since the 80s and the city hosts the yearly  Queer Screen  film festival.

New York, New York

2023 Pride dates:  June 17-25.  NYC Pride  is one of the largest Pride celebrations on the planet. The main festivities, including the parade, will be held during the weekend of June 25. 

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  No LGBTIQ+ visit to New York City would be complete without stop in the West Village . It’s here that the Stonewall Uprising took place during the summer of 1969 after police raided  the Stonewall Inn  and began arresting patrons and bartenders. From here, the modern gay rights movement was born.

Aside from Stonewall, NYC has a deep history and profound connection to the LGBTIQ+ community. From painful moments, like being the epicenter of the HIV pandemic, to joyous ones, like the evolution of Harlem’s ball culture, New York City is a must-visit for all queer travelers.

NYC’s most prominent LGBTIQ+ neighborhood is Hell’s Kitchen . The neighborhood’s 9th and 10th Avenues are loaded with LGBTIQ-owned restaurants, barbershops, cafes and bars. You’ll see rainbow flags flying from windows on virtually every corner. Go-to nightlife spots in Hell’s Kitchen include the wildly popular  Industry  bar, and the campy, country-themed  Flaming Saddles Saloon.

Barcelona, Spain

2023 Pride dates: July 14-15.  Barcelona Pride 's official lineup and event info are still to come.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Barcelona’s L'Eixample neighborhood is one of the biggest LGBTIQ+ boroughs in all of Europe. It’s even been lovingly given the nickname “Gaixample”. Here, you’ll find LGBTIQ+ beauty salons, bookshops, saunas, cafes, bars, restaurants, sex shops and everything in-between.  

Spain has long been at the forefront of LGBTIQ+ rights. The nation legalized same-sex marriage back in 2005 and has since enacted numerous laws that ensure equality and protection for the queer community, including those who are nonbinary and trans.  Platja de la Mar Bella  is Barcelona’s premier gay beach (and it also happens to be clothing optional) with most beachgoers baring it all. Among the numerous other LGBTIQ+ hotspots,  Arena Classic  is a popular lesbian bar that’s a staple to the local community, and  Candy Darling , a Warhol-inspired club, sees partygoers dance nightly until the early hours of morning, sometimes all the way until the sun comes up.

Auckland, New Zealand

2023 Pride dates : Being in the Southern Hemisphere, Auckland  held its  Pride celebration  all through February. But there are still events and celebrations happening in June. 

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Karangahape Road, referred to as “K Road” by locals, is where you'll find most of Auckland’s LGBTIQ+ nightlife. Many Aucklanders make a night of it by starting their evening at  The Eagle  bar, a local, unpretentious watering hole that welcomes a wide variety of members from the LGBTIQ+ community. Later in the night, locals make their way to  Family Bar … which is conveniently located across the street. Family Bar has more of a club vibe, with a bustling dance floor and weekly drag shows.

New Zealand has long been known as a friendly and welcoming country. It has robust anti-discrimination laws and legalized same-sex marriage in 2013. Since then, the nation as a whole, and especially its major cities like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch , have become known as some of the most LGBTIQ-friendly places anywhere in the world.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

2023 Pride dates:  Puerto Vallarta Pride  was held in May, and is one of Mexico’s biggest Pride celebrations, with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike. Check out local venues to find Pride events during June. 

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Emiliano Zapata (also called Old Town) is where a vast majority of Puerto Vallarta’s queer nightlife is based. However, the entire city is an LGBTIQ+ vacation magnet and it’s virtually impossible to find any section of town that isn’t welcoming.

Throughout the years, Mexico has become more and more LGBTIQ-friendly, and the oceanfront resort town of Puerto Vallarta is one of the nation’s most progressive cities. All the big brand resorts are LGBTIQ-inclusive, and there are even LGBTIQ-exclusive hotels, like the  Almar Resort . For socializing and meeting other members of the community, the options are endless. From the beachy, indoor/outdoor  Mr. Flamingo ; to the comic-book-inspired  Blondies Loft + Slushbar  and even the sleek and trendy  La Noche , there’s no shortage of places to go. Plus, there are all the fantastic beaches , with Playa de los Muertos  known as PV’s “gay beach.”

Amsterdam, Netherlands

2023 Pride dates: August 1-6.  Amsterdam Pride  is one of the world’s more unique celebrations since its parade takes place on boats floating along the city’s famous canals.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Amsterdam is a very progressive city and LGBTIQ+ venues can be found throughout, but a lot of activity is centered within the Reguliersdwarsstraat neighborhood , located at the center of town.

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2001 and has remained one of the most LGBTIQ-inclusive countries on the planet thanks to its numerous anti-discrimination laws and policies that protect civil rights for the queer community.

Cafe 't Mandje  is an absolute staple of the city’s queer scene. It was opened in 1927 by its boisterous lesbian owner, Bet van Beeran. To this day, patrons continue to enjoy the eclectic interior and friendly crowd. If late-night adventures are more your style, check out  EXIT Café , a thumping LGBTIQ+ bar that welcomes everyone from the LGBTIQ+ spectrum and their allies. Best of all, EXIT is open later than most bars in the city, making it perfect for night owls and those looking for an epic night on the town. For first-time visitors, the  Pink Point  info kiosk is a great resource. It’s a dedicated LGBTIQ+ information booth that provides travelers with tips, recommendations and information on all things queer in the city.

London, United Kingdom

2023 Pride dates:  July 1.  London Pride  is the biggest Pride celebration in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe, and the world.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Soho , in London’s West End , has historically been the city’s epicenter of queer life, and to this day, it remains a hub of the city's LGBTIQ+ bars, shops and clubs.

London has been one of the most prominent epicenters of queer culture for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to the city’s 18th-century “Molly Houses”, which were meeting places for LGBTIQ+ people. London remains a massively queer city and is known for its brimming underground LGBTIQ+ scene that can be found at rotating parties, like those put on by  Cybil’s House .

A must-visit for any LGBTIQ+ traveler is the  Admiral Duncan . It’s a chance to learn about queer history, honor the past and find community… all while enjoying a pint. Admiral Duncan was bombed by a Neo-Nazi in 1999 because it’s located in the middle of  London’s largest LGBTIQ+ neighborhood, Soho .

It was a massive turning point for the city. Following the bombing, a giant rally was formed outside the pub and London’s police force promised to do all they could to find the perpetrator. They even staffed a police van outside the bar with openly-LGBTIQ+ officers to help make the community feel safe and more comfortable approaching the police to file reports. To this day, the Admiral Duncan is a symbol of London’s LGBTIQ+ community coming together to grow stronger in the face of adversity.

While in the city, be sure to visit one of the various pubs that serve  PROUD beer , a queer-owned beer company that helps support local charities. Best of all, PROUD is totally cheeky, naming its brew the LGBTQIPA .

Palm Springs, California 

2023 Pride dates:  November 3-5. Thanks to the city’s year-round warm weather,  Palm Springs Pride  takes place much later than most.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  All of Palm Springs is an LGBTIQ-centric neighborhood. In fact, Palm Springs has such a queer presence, that even adjacent suburbs like Cathedral City and Palm Desert are developing their own queer populations, holding their own Pride celebrations.

It’s believed that Palm Springs became an LGBTIQ+ hotspot because of the film industry. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, actors, actresses, directors, producers and agents made Palm Springs their desert escape. Naturally, with the heavy LGBTIQ+ populous within the arts, Palm Springs became a refuge for many who had to hide their sexuality. It became the go-to spot for closeted artists to let their hair down and enjoy themselves. That vibe still exists to this day, with  numerous LGBTIQ+ resorts  dotting the town, many of which are clothing-optional. For a bit of the city’s famed LGBTIQ+ nightlife, be sure to check out longstanding staples like  Chill Bar  and  Hunters .

Toronto, Canada

2023 Pride dates: June 23-25.  Toronto’s   Pride celebration  consists of a parade, parties and a popular street fair that’s a great option for those looking to have a more laidback and kid-friendly Pride experience.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Queen Street has been Toronto’s main LGBTIQ+ destination for decades, perhaps most recognized as the filming location of the US version of the groundbreaking drama  Queer as Folk .

Canada has some of the best protections for LGBTIQ+ people anywhere on the planet. The country as a whole is known for being welcoming and is considered one of the friendliest places on the planet. To visit the bar where  Queer as Folk  was filmed, make a trip to  Woody’s . It’s Church Street’s oldest LGBTIQ+ establishment, dating back to 1989, and remains one of the most prominent staples of Toronto’s queer culture. For something you can only find in Toronto, visit the  Buddies in Bad Times  theater. It’s a queer performance space and cabaret that also transforms into a nightclub during nights when there are no performances.

Tel Aviv, Israel 

2023 Pride dates: June 9.  Tel Aviv Pride  is the largest (and one of the only) Pride celebrations in the Middle East… and it also happens to be considered one of the largest in the world. 

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Tel Aviv doesn’t have a specific “gayborhood”, but instead, is incredibly LGBTIQ-friendly throughout. In fact, the Boston Globe cites Tel Aviv as having 25% of its population identify as gay, literally making it one of the gayest places on Earth.

Tel Aviv is a very strange anomaly. Gay marriage isn’t legal in Israel, yet Tel Aviv has become one of the most progressive, LGBTIQ-friendly cities on the planet. Many say to look at Tel Aviv as its own entity that operates differently from the rest of the country. A great example of this is  Hilton Beach . While it’s technically an “unofficial" gay beach, it’s such a well-known fact that even Tel Aviv’s tourism website bills it as a hotspot for the LGBTIQ+ community. One of the city’s most popular locales for queer nightlife is  Shpagat . The club is renowned for being a welcoming space frequented by people from the entire LGBTIQ+ spectrum, as well as allies. It’s also a great mix of locals and tourists, ensuring that you’ll always be meeting someone new.

Provincetown, Massachusetts 

2023 Pride dates:  June 2-4.  Provincetown Pride  has a diverse lineup of events, including everything from the town’s famous parade to a comedy showcase, 5k race, yoga sessions and more.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  Provincetown (known as P-town) can be seen as the Palm Springs of New England . The entire city is a flourishing queer hotspot. And much like Palm Springs, it was P-town’s connection to the arts that began attracting its large LGBTIQ+ populous.

Located at the very easternmost tip of Cape Cod , P-town has been a summer escape for the LGBTIQ+ community for over 60 years. From the riotous parties at  A-House  to the (technically illegal) nude beachgoers at  Herring Cove Beach , there’s no shortage of fun to be had in P-town. Plan your visit to align with one of the town's many queer festivals, including Bear Week, Girl Splash lesbian weekend, Fan Fair trans week and more.

Berlin, Germany

2023 Pride dates:  June 18-July 23. Berlin's   Christopher Street Day  (June 18) is  Germany’s largest Pride celebration. The annual festival is named in honor of the Manhattan street where the Stonewall Inn is located.

Must-visit LGBTIQ+   neighborhood:  The heart of Berlin’s LGBTIQ+ activity is in Schöneberg , which has had gay and lesbian bars since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest gay boroughs on the planet.

Germany is a progressive nation when it comes to LGBTIQ+ rights, especially in its major city centers. Berlin especially has a fascinating queer history. In the 20s and 30s, queer culture flourished in the city, before being almost eradicated by the Nazis during World War II. After the war, the LGBTIQ community was forced to rebuild from the ground up, ultimately creating the buzzing and beautiful Berlin of today.   

Berlin is famous for being a city where people stay out clubbing until the sun rises the next morning. This is great for clubbers who want to party at Berlin institutions like  GMF . But Berlin has so much more than clubs. Its  Gay Hostel  is a unique lodging opportunity that’s only available to LGBTIQ+ people under the age of 38, creating a safe space where you’re bound to meet some new friends. The city is also home to the  Schwules Museum , one of the only museums in the entire world dedicated to researching and preserving the history of LGBTIQ+ cultures around the world.

The 203 Worst (& Safest) Countries for LGBTQ+ Travel in 2023

Instead of relying on hearsay and anecdotes from other travelers, we took a deep look at LGBTQ+ rights, country by country. After 400+ hours of research, we’ve reviewed all countries’ individual laws and gathered data from a variety of trusted international sources to create the definitive “LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index” that will help you find the safest (and least safe) countries for your next trip abroad.

Our methodology

We ranked 203 countries with available data, and then carefully examined LGBTQ+ rights for each country. We created our LGBTQ+ travel safety index based on a total of ten ranking factors, each pertaining to the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ individuals. We worked with academic researcher, Eliot Assoudeh PhD. , to design the methodology and cross-reference all data. We utilized a mixed-methods research design to create the index.

Note on Russia/Ukraine: Russia and Ukraine were included in this study. However, keep in mind that (as in all instances of political unrest), the most marginalized people in society are often targets . Please note that the situation for LGBTQ+ people is constantly evolving in the region.

Positive factors

• Legalized Same-Sex Marriage (0 to +50 Points) — Is same-sex marriage legal and equal under the law in this country? If marriage is not equal, are civil unions legal? If not, does the country legally recognize foreign LGBTQ+ marriages? We ranked the scores for this metric based on how many years same-sex marriage has been legal in this country with the highest possible score being 50 points. Civil unions and other types of partnerships received 25 points or less and were also ranked by the number of years they have been legal. Additionally, if a country only legally recognizes foreign LGBTQ+ marriages then they earned 10 points. • LGBTQ+ Worker Protections (0 to +50 Points) — For the people living in that country, are there legal protections against discrimination in the workplace? 50 points were awarded for both sexual orientation and gender protection; 25 points were awarded for sexual orientation protection only. Additionally, if a country only recognizes limited rights for LGBTQ+ worker protections, then they earned 10 points. Source: LGBTQ+ Worker Protections – ILGA
• Legal Protections Against Anti-LGBTQ+ Discrimination (0 to +50 Points) — Are there either constitutional or broad legal protections of LGBTQ+ people in this country? Constitutional protections were awarded 50 points; broad protections were awarded 25 points. Additionally, if a country only recognizes limited protections against discrimination, then they earned 10 points. Source: Anti Discrimination Laws – ILGA
• Criminalization of Hate-Based Violence (0 to +50 Points) — Is anti-LGBTQ+, hate-based, or homophobia-inspired violence considered a hate crime in this country? Is hate-based, anti-LGBTQ+ speech considered hate speech? The existence of hate crime penalties received 50 points; incitement-only punishments received 25 points. • Adoption Recognition (0 to +50 Points) — Is joint adoption and/or second-parent adoption legal in this country for same-sex parents? The recognition of both joint and second-parent adoption received 50 points, while only second-parent adoption recognition received 25 points. Source: Adoption Recognition – ILGA
• Gallup World Poll (0 to +100 points) — In the Gallup poll, individuals were asked, “Is the city or area where you live a good place or not a good place to live for gay and lesbian people?” The percentages represented and used in our metrics include those who said “good place” for that country. We gave this factor a double weighting (maximum 100 points) because it gives a very clear pulse on the general attitude towards LGBTQ+ people by locals in each country. If, for example, a country answered 92% positively to the Gallup question, then they were awarded 92 points. We use the most recently available data available for that country. • Transgender Legal Identity Laws (0 to +50 points) — The degree of legal recognition provided to transgender people varies widely throughout the world. We individually reviewed the laws for each country and asked the following questions. Does the country allow individuals to change their legal gender identity without requiring sex reassignment surgery (SRS) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)? If so, these countries were awarded 50 points or less depending on the details of the law. Does the country require SRS for people to qualify for legal gender change? If so, these countries received 25 points or less depending on the details of the law. Does the country have no rights for or against people legally changing their gender? Negative factors

• Illegal LGBTQ+ Relationships and Acts (0 to -100 Points) — Can “sodomy,” “indecent acts,” or “buggery” result in punishments under the law such as physical violence, a fine, or prison time? Any possible death sentences or life-in-prison sentences under the law receive the maximum -100 point penalty. All other punishments were ranked by severity. We gave this factor a negative double weighting because the fact that homosexuality is illegal and can receive the death sentence means that the laws of these countries are extremely unfavorable for LGBTQ+ people. • Propaganda/Morality Laws (0 to -50 Points) — Are there laws sanctioned by the state to prevent the dissemination or publication of information about queer culture? Are there laws affecting the creation of LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)? This metric was graded based on the severity of the punishments with -50 points being the worst score. Source: Global Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws – Human Rights Watch
• Transgender Legal Identity Laws (0 to -50 points) — We individually reviewed the laws for each country and asked the following question. Does the country make it illegal for people to change their gender? If so, these countries were given up to negative fifty points depending on the severity of punishment. For example, in Oman, simply imitating the opposite sex gets up to 1 year in prison and this country received the full -50 points. Source: Global Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws – Human Rights Watch
• Transgender murder rates (0 to -100 points) — Countries were awarded zero points if they did not have any recorded transgender murders, but were deducted up to 100 points if transgender murders were reported through the Transgender Murder Monitoring website. Rates are per million citizens and occurred between 2008 and September 2022. Source: Transgender Murder Monitoring – TvT

To measure LGBTQ+ safety abroad, one cannot look only at data on whether or not same-sex marriage is legal and if anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination laws are in place. It also depends on the general attitude of the culture, minutiae of the legal system, and oppression of LGBTQ+ rights. These issues can affect everything, from your ability to show public displays of affection to being able to share a hotel room bed to the capacity at which you can use dating apps without being caught by the local police. A few items on our list, such as adoption recognition and worker protections, may not affect LGBTQ+ travelers directly, but these factors are a good indication of overall attitudes within the culture.

Study Limitations: Due to budget constraints, the methodology used in our index does not sample the actual experiences of LGBTQ tourists who have visited each country. One way we attempted to overcome this weakness was by utilizing the Gallup World Poll as well as looking at each country’s laws and any progress the country’s had in comparison with our previous years’ studies.

What’s changed for LGBTQ+ individuals over the past year?

Some of the positive highlights include:

• Cuba legalized same-sex marriage in September 2022.
• While gay marriage is still banned, Japan is making progress toward the acceptance of same-sex marriage, and gay couples can now register a domestic partnership as of November 2022. 
• Switzerland legalized same-sex marriage on July 1, 2022.
• Singapore, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis decriminalized homosexuality in 2022.
• As of January 31, 2023, same-sex marriage and adoption are fully legal in Slovenia.
• Croatia passed laws expanding the rights of same-sex couples to joint adoption in August 2022.
• In December 2022, the U.S. Virgin Islands increased its discrimination protections for people based on their sexual identity and gender expression.
• New Zealand plans to implement gender self-identification on June 15, 2023. 

Unfortunately, not all news was good for LGBTQ+ rights in the past year. Russia passed stricter laws that prohibit LGBTQ+ “ propaganda .” In 2022, Indonesia banned sexual activity outside of marriage to come into effect in three years, but this will target LGBTQ+ people who are not permitted to marry in the country. According to the ACLU , the 2023 legislative session has already seen over 120 bills aimed at restricting the rights of LGBTQ+ people in the United States.

Where are same-sex relationships illegal?

Unfortunately, some countries where it’s illegal to be gay or trans also happen to be popular vacation spots. For instance, it’s illegal to be gay in Jamaica; the “buggery law,” which is leftover from the colonial era, allows for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, including hard labor. Jamaica was called “ the most homophobic place on Earth ” by Time magazine in 2006. That label has clung to Jamaica ever since, and with good reason. In a 2013 survey of 71 LGBTQ+ people conducted by Human Rights Watch, more than half said they had been victims of homophobic violence. Non-violent discrimination is even more pervasive, with bullying and exclusion faced in education, healthcare, and within local communities. Although there is some light at the end of the tunnel for Jamaica since there are signs that it’s moving toward reform.

Those looking for trans- and gay-travel-safe countries should reconsider popular vacation destinations like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Myanmar, and Egypt as well as some of the more popular beaches in the Caribbean, like Saint Lucia and Barbados.

• GROSS INDECENCY

(1) A person who commits an act of gross indecency with another person commits an offence and is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for 10 years or on summary

conviction to 5 years.

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to an act of gross indecency committed in private between an adult male person and an adult female person, both of whom consent.

(3) For the purposes of subsection (2)

(a) an act shall be deemed not to have been committed in private if it is committed in a public place; and

(b) a person shall be deemed not to consent to the commission of such an act if

(i) the consent is extorted by force, threats or fear of bodily harm or is obtained by false and fraudulent representations as to the nature of the act;

(ii) the consent is induced by the application or administration of any drug, matter or thing with intent to intoxicate or stupefy the person; or

Art. 409. (Homosexuality). – Whoever has carnal intercourse with a person of the same sex shall be punished, where the act does not constitute a more serious crime, with imprisonment [96. P.C.] from three months to three years. Where the act committed is an act of lust different from carnal intercourse, the punishment imposed shall be reduced by one third [119 P.C.].

Art. 410. (Security Measures). – A security measure [161 s. P.C.] may be added to a sentence for the crimes referred to in articles 407, 408, and 409.

Section 248, Section 379.

248. Unnatural Offences. (1) Whoever, has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any person and whoever allows any person to have such intercourse with him or her commits an offence, and upon conviction, shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years and may also be liable to a fine. (2) If the intercourse referred to in subsection (1), above, is committed without consent, the offender shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years and may also be liable to a fine; provided that, a consent given by a person below the age of eighteen years to such intercourse shall not be deemed to be a consent within the meaning of this section. 379. Vagabond. (1) The term “vagabond” means— (a) any person who after being convicted as an idle person, commits any of the offences which would render him or her liable to be convicted as such again; (b) any person who is found to be in possession of breaking implements with the intent to commit house trespass; 187 Act 9 Penal Code Act 2008 (c) any suspected person or reputed thief who by night frequents or loiters about any shop, warehouse, dwelling house, dock or wharf with the intent to commit any offence under Chapter XXI of this Act; (d) any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of a prostitute or in any public place solicits or importunes for immoral purposes; and (e) any male person who dresses or is attired in the fashion of a woman in a public place. (2) Whoever is convicted as a vagabond shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months or with a fine or with both.

Articles 296, 298.

Article (296) One is convicted to no less than a year and no more than three years in prison in case of: 1- Leading a female to commit adultery. 2- Instigating, inducing, seducing a female anyhow to commit adultery or frequenting a brothel in order to commit debauchery whether inside or outside the country. 3- Leading, instigating or seducing a male anyhow for sodomy or dissipation. 4- Inducing or seducing a male or a female anyhow to commit illegal or immoral actions. 5- Bringing, exposing or accepting a male or a female in the purpose of sexual exploitation.

Article (298) Anyone who takes adultery or sodomy as a profession or a living is convicted to no more than ten years in prison. The same penalty is imposed on anyone who exploits a person’s debauchery and dissipation.

Articles 264, 268.

Article (264): Homosexuality is the contact of one man to another through his posterior; both sodomites whether males or females are punished with whipping of one hundred strokes if not married. It is admissible to reprimand it by imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year punishment by stoning to death if married.

Article (268): Lesbianism is intercourse between one female and another. Anyone engaged in this act with another shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years. If the act happens under coercion imprisonment may be expanded to seven years.

Articles 233-41.

Article 233- Livat is defined as penetration of a man’s sex organ (penis), up to the point of circumcision, into another male person’s anus.

Article 234- The hadd punishment for livat shall be the death penalty for the insertive/active party if he has committed livat by using force, coercion, or in cases where he meets the conditions for ihsan; otherwise, he shall be sentenced to one hundred lashes. The hadd punishment for the receptive/passive party, in any case (whether or not he meets the conditions for ihsan) shall be the death penalty.

Note 1- If the insertive/active party is a non-Muslim and the receptive/passive party is a Muslim, the hadd punishment for the insertive/active party shall be the death penalty.

Note 2- Ihsan is defined as a status that a man is married to a permanent and pubescent wife and whilst he has been sane and pubescent has had a vaginal intercourse with the same wife while she was pubescent, and he can have an intercourse with her in the same way [vaginal] whenever he so wishes.

Article 235- Tafkhiz is defined as putting a man’s sex organ (penis) between the thighs or buttocks of another male person.

Note- A penetration [of a penis into another male person’s anus] that does not reach the point of circumcision shall be regarded as tafkhiz.

Article 236- In the case of tafkhiz, the hadd punishment for the active and passive party shall be one hundred lashes and it shall make no difference whether or not the offender meets the conditions of ihsan [mentioned in note 2 of article 234], or whether or not [the offender] has resorted to coercion.

Note- If the active party is a non-Muslim and the passive party is a Muslim, the hadd punishment for the active party shall be the death penalty.

Article 237- Homosexual acts of a male person in cases other than livat and tafkhiz, such as kissing or touching as a result of lust, shall be punishable by thirty-one to seventy-four lashes of ta’zir punishment of the sixth grade.

Note 1- This article shall be equally applicable in the case of a female person.

Note 2- This article shall not be applicable in the cases punishable by a hadd punishment under Shari’a rules.

Article 238- Musaheqeh is defined as where a female person puts her sex organ on the sex organ of another person of the same sex.

Article 239- The hadd punishment for musaheqeh shall be one hundred lashes.

Article 240- Regarding the hadd punishment for musaheqeh, there is no difference between the active or passive parties or between Muslims and non-Muslims, or between a person that meets the conditions for ihsan and a person who does not, and also whether or not [the offender] has resorted to coercion.

Article 241- In the cases of indecent offenses, in the absence of admissible legal evidence and with denial of the accused, any type of investigation and interrogation in order to discover hidden affairs and things concealed from the public eye shall be prohibited. In cases with the possibility of commission of an offense with force, coercion, assault, abduction, or deception, or cases which are considered as commission [of an offense] with resorting to force, this rule shall not be applicable.

Article 534.

Penal Code 1943, Article 534 Sexual Intercourse Against Nature Article 534 prohibits “sexual intercourse against nature” with a penalty of up to one year imprisonment. This provision has been applied to intercourse between men and between women.

Penal Code 1943, Article 521 Disguising as a Woman Article 521 criminalises gender expression by making it an offence for a man to “disguise himself as a woman”. The penalty for this offence is up to six years imprisonment.

Sodomy – (1) Every one who commits sodomy is liable- (a) Where the act of sodomy is committed on a female, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years; (b) Where the act of sodomy is committed on a male, and at the time of the act that male is under the age of fifteen years and the offender is of over the age of twenty-one years, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years; (c) In any other case, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years. (2) This offence is complete upon penetration. (3) Where sodomy is committed on any person under the age of fifteen years he shall not be charged with being a party to that offence, but he may be charged with being a party to an offence against section 154 of this Act in say case to which that section is applicable. Articles 352, 354.

352. Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or is a party to the commission, or procures or attempts to procure the commission, by any male person, of any act of gross indecency with any other male person shall be guilty of a misdemeanour and liable to imprisonment for two years.

354. Everyone who commits buggery, either with a human being or with any other living creature, shall be guilty of felony and liable to imprisonment for life.

The homophobic legacy of the British Empire

As noted, an asterisk next to the country names in the above list means that it was a former British colony. A whopping 44 of the 66 countries that have illegal same-sex relationships were once part of the British Empire. That is over 66%! This isn’t a coincidence. In almost all cases, the laws outlawing consensual gay sex were put into place under British rule and were left in place following independence.

India is an example country that has only in 2018 managed to annul Section 377, a British colonial-era law prohibiting “unnatural acts,” in order to legalize consensual gay sex. Ancient Indian literature such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana have many references to LGBTQ+ heroes including transgender warriors and two queens who made love in order for one queen to get pregnant with an heir for their kingdom. Long story short, this points to the fact that it was likely the British influence that largely led to Indian homophobia in the first place.

With this being said, all these countries have the choice and ability to update their laws. And in most cases, these former British colonies have been fully independent for half a century or more and have chosen not to change these antiquated laws. Long story short, the British influence may have brought the “sodomy” laws in the first place but the local attitudes and customs have decided to keep them .

One country might surprise you for not ranking higher on our list: the United States. One reason for that is, of course, that there is a great deal of variation in gay rights depending on the state you’re in . There are also no constitutional or broad protections for LGBTQ+ rights under federal law in the U.S. Also, in some states, LGBTQ+ youth do not have access to helpful information, with these so-called “no-promo homo” laws counting in the “propaganda/morality” category. The U.S. might have come far, but it has a long way to go in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, especially for young transgender people .

How many countries have legalized gay marriage?

As of now, 30 countries (plus Guam, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) have marriage equality, with Switzerland joining in July 2022. 15 countries recognize civil unions or partnerships. 9 countries do not allow marriage equality for their citizens but formally recognize foreign marriages.

Countries with marriage equality laws are often great spots for LGBT+ vacations, but be aware that gay travel to rural or fundamentalist communities can be problematic in almost any country — definitely don’t make assumptions when visiting smaller towns and communities.

TvT (Transrespect versus Transphobia) Worldwide tracks the instances of transgender people who have been murdered around the world. As of this publishing, over 4,000 trans murders have been tracked during the past 13 years with 1,645 of those crimes taking place in Brazil alone.

Why are 14 of these 15 countries with the highest trans murder rates located in Central and South America?

The majority of reported trans murders are currently happening within Central and South America. But why is transgender murder such a frequent occurrence in Latin America? One article from Equal Times posits that a heavily patriarchal society combined with high transgender rates of sex work may be contributing factors. As many transgender individuals are shunned by their families, they turn to sex work to survive, which carries an additional risk to their safety. It is estimated that an extremely high number of transgender individuals are living in poverty , and only an estimated 25% of trans women will complete secondary school in Latin America.

The ostracization of individuals from their families and communities is considered another major factor in the high rates of violence and murder against LGBTQ+ people within Latin America. Additionally, police are often not a source of safety, and governmental protections are not in place to support those most vulnerable.

What other countries might be a problem for LGBTQ+ international travelers?

114 of the 203 countries offer at least some form of legal protection for LGBTQ+ people, but 82 of the 202 countries penalize either sexual acts, being trans, or the dissemination of information about LGBTQ+ rights. Many countries have confusing or inconsistent legislation, allowing for protections among some of the LGBTQ+ community while penalizing or harming others. This creates a grey area where it’s not quite safe to be out but not immediately threatening.

One of those countries is Japan . While LGBTQ+ representation in Japanese media has mostly been positive, and the Japanese public has consistently polled in favor of same-sex marriage, there’s a long way to go as far as legislation outside of the major cities.

But the conversation about danger is a little bit different than the question of which countries do not allow gay marriage. Japan is rarely dangerous, with 35% of locals saying Japan is a “good place” for gay people to live, while Russia frequently polls at only 9%. Countries like Armenia (at 4%), Kyrgyzstan (7%), and Mongolia (17%) all may be bad places to go as well, despite not having any formal anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that could harm travelers.

Beyond gay-marriage-illegal countries, here are some real problem places among the list of most-visited countries in the world:

• China — China’s relationship to LGBTQ+ culture is dubious to say the least. Homosexuality is no longer considered a mental disorder as of 2001, and the consensus is that homosexuality is legal and that most locals won’t care so long as you find the right bar to hang out in. At the same time, groups and events have frequently been banned, and censorship laws have frequently been used to ban LGBTQ+ content online in China. LGBTQ+ travel is possible, but only with caution and thorough research into the specific cities you’ll be visiting.
• Russia — Russia has gained increasing international infamy for the way the government treats its LGBTQ+ citizens. Activists have died or gone missing, and individuals who followed Russian gay marriage laws to the letter have been forced to flee the country . That’s ignoring the purges and torture happening in Chechnya . Rights have regressed in recent years, and travel isn’t advised, despite homosexuality being legal on paper.
• Indonesia — LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly considered to be a “moral threat” in Indonesia, with a law against pornography being used for any non-pornographic, pro-LGBTQ+ content. Meanwhile, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has only gotten worse as a result of this persecution. While it’s not illegal in the country, homosexuality could result in public humiliation and arrests nevertheless . This has become more perilous with the 2022 legislation passed that will outlaw all sex outside of marriage.

Iraq , Mozambique , and Bahrain are also examples of countries where same-sex relations are not illegal in the traditional sense but expression of LGBTQ+ sexuality has been suppressed and may still be considered “indecency” with legal consequences, depending on the circumstance.

If the country you want to visit is in one of those grey areas, consider reading more about it, talking to fellow travelers, or doing a bit more research before booking a flight.

As one can plainly see, LGBTQ+ travel safety varies a great deal, from relative comfort to the real possibility of danger. We looked at the specific legal status of rights abroad as well as polling information to create our LGBTQ+ travel index, but the on-the-street experience can be much more nuanced. Because anti-LGBTQ+ crime and harassment is rarely reported, especially not on an international scale, it’s hard to find data to inform travelers of what walking the streets might be like. Beyond our list, ask other queer people and allies there before you go. Make an online friend, do your research, and take your time.

Aaron Edwards, an FTM trans travel blogger, shares the following helpful tips on staying safe while traveling.

1. Remember to bring all your documents

Read up on local laws regarding LGBTQ+ people. Some places are much more restrictive than others and it is better to know your rights and not need them than to be stuck in a jail cell somewhere.

3. Knowing your next bathroom stop is must

Always know where your next bathroom stop will be or have a backup bathroom plan in case you are not comfortable with the situation.

4. Some destinations are best to avoid and travel insurance is worth it

Do your research and know which locations are best to avoid. I also recommend getting a good travel insurance plan no matter what your destination is because you never know when you might need it.

5. Have a letter from your doctor handy at the airport

If you are on HRT (hormone replacement therapy), always try to bring a doctor’s note to keep with your medication in your bag in case you have issues with airport security.

6. You will probably be questioned

Brace yourself to be questioned. A lot of cultures are known for their bluntness. Even people who pass extremely well can get stopped and asked questions based on documents, appearance, etc.

7. If possible, travel with a friend or a group

When in doubt, be with people. There is safety in numbers, especially if they are your friends and people who will stand up for you if it is needed. This applies whether you’re on a camping trip , staying at Airbnbs or at regular hotels.

8. Network via LGBTQ+ Facebook groups

Join transgender or LGBTQ+ related Facebook groups. It is an easy way to find other trans people who LIVE where you are traveling. They can give you their personal experiences, ideas of places to go, or even offer to hang out with you and give you a local tour.

2. Bring copies of your important documents

All travelers should carry backup copies of their passport and other personal information, but there are some extra considerations that LGBTQ+ travelers should consider. It isn’t fun to think about, but Healthcare Power of Attorney and Hospital Visitation Authorization documents are essential. This is because domestic partnership and same-sex marriage laws differ widely around the world. We carry these documents on a flash drive and our attorney has prepared laminated wallet-sized Hospital Visitation Authorizations. This is something we hope to never use, but we feel better having when we travel. A neck wallet can be a great way to carry your most important documents including your passport etc.

3. Know your rights

Transgender and gender non-conforming travelers face higher levels of marginalization than other “LGB” travelers. For trans and gender non-conforming travelers, it’s important to know your rights, especially in airports. There are legal protections in the EU, UK, and USA to protect trans and gender non-conforming air travelers. Do some additional research when traveling outside of America, the UK, and Europe. In this travel zone, here are a few tips and expectations.

4. Select the gender that appears on your Government ID

When booking tickets, indicate the gender that appears on your government-issued identification. Sometimes this is different than the gender you present, but the legal requirement is only for the names on your ID and travel documents to match. You should never be questioned or forced to further prove your gender based on your gender presentation.

5. Pat-downs are based on the gender you present, not your ID

If a security pat-down is required, it must be completed by security personnel of the same sex as the passenger. In a pat-down situation, it will be based on the gender that the passenger presents and not their government-issued ID.

6. Body scanners don’t actually show your body

For trans and non-binary travelers worried about body scanners, the countries mentioned do not display the actual scan of your body to security personnel. In fact, all passenger images are displayed as generic body forms on the screens visible to staff. The screen does identify areas that should be screened more closely, but it uses a generic body form. For example, there would be a highlighted box around the midsection of the form if a traveler forgets to remove their belt. It does not show any details of the body or anatomy.

7. Wearing a prosthetic device or binder can lead to further questioning

Trans and non-binary travelers should be prepared for additional questioning if wearing prosthetic devices or binders. These travelers are not required to show, remove or lift clothing to reveal these devices. Simply answer any questions in a straight-forward manner and speak to a supervisor if any of those described situations should arise.

8. Consider LGBTQ+ tours

We all find safety in numbers, so consider LGBTQ+ tours that will specialize in gay travel. Similarly, consider booking a traditional tour company where you will have a local guide who is familiar with customs, speaks the language, and can advise you on how to stay safe while exploring the world. Many tour companies display their credentials in serving the LGBTQ+ community on their websites. You can also contact their customer service staff with additional concerns or specific questions on travel to certain destinations.

9. Know the local laws in the country you plan to visit

Do some research on the laws that exist in each country you plan to visit. Specifically, look up how often they’re enforced and when the laws were written. For example in Africa, many laws are left-over colonial-era codes that were put in place by other powers and are not enforced or are selectively enforced. For example, Morocco only sporadically enforces its anti-LGBTQ+ law and does not enforce it in resort towns like Marrakech . It’s mostly a law that still exists because of Islamic morality. Morocco even has an LGBTQ+ rights group and is largely viewed as tolerant. Some nations, like Uganda, are actively creating and expanding laws that target the LGBTQ+ community with penalties of death. Make a distinction between countries like Morocco and Uganda when considering your travels.

10. Remember to enjoy the local historic sites and cuisines

Focus on what you can do, and not what you can’t. Many countries will have a less visible LGBTQ+ community and social scene. Sometimes, this can be a blessing in disguise because it frees up your trip for other meaningful activities. Travel should be more than gay bars and nightclubs. Focus on what you can do like touring historic sites, visiting museums and trying new cuisines. It can be tough for a couple to resist public displays of affection, but no laws will be able to keep you from building travel memories, and you can make it up with extra private displays of affection.

11. Be careful with the location feature of dating apps

On gay apps like Grindr and Scruff, turn off the location feature. Even in countries where your rights are protected, gay-bashing can be an issue. In the Ukraine, for example, the “how far away” location feature is disabled nation-wide because of past incidents. Still, there is a thriving gay culture and plenty of gay locals. Always exercise caution and meet strangers in public spaces.

12. Always be culturally aware

Be culturally aware when you’re traveling anywhere. In many nations, public displays of affection from any couple, same or differing sex, are a taboo. Comply with these customs without feeling singled out. It may still be upsetting, but know that different-sex couples are also conforming their behavior to local norms. Similarly, some conservative destinations will have different norms on appearance and dress. It can be triggering to change your appearance, clothing, mannerisms, and behavior if you are LGBTQ+. Previous life experiences like bullying can bring up tough emotions but know that it’s most often local customs and not bigotry that require cultural conformity. I realize that for some individuals that will be easier than for others. My advice comes from a point of privilege as a masculine cis-gendered male, but I truly feel that certain sacrifices are worth it to travel.

Meg Ten Eyck is the creator of EveryQueer.com which is a website dedicated to inspiring and equipping LGBTQ+ travelers to live a life of adventures. She shared the following tips.

Be aware of local gender expectations. Are women supposed to be covered, wear headscarves or avoid certain activities? Try to respect local customs and blend in as much as possible.

3. Have someone you trust know your itinerary

Be sure to leave your itinerary and contact information with someone you trust. It’s always a good idea to have someone back home who has an idea of what you’re up to and where you plan on heading. It doesn’t have to be a minute-to-minute breakdown, contact information of hotels and flight numbers will work just fine.

4. Find LGBTQ+ friendly businesses before you leave

Consider using the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association as a resource for finding LGBTQ+ owned and affirming businesses in countries where you may have more concerns. Knowing that a business is owned by LGBTQ+ people or specifically seeks out LGBTQ+ accreditation may offer some peace of mind.

5. Be careful with PDA’s in certain countries

Be mindful of public displays of affection, in some locations like Russia or Morocco, mundane actions like holding hands, requesting a double bed at a hotel, casual touching, and kissing can be considered public displays. In some countries these actions are illegal and the consequences can be anything from a fine to imprisonment to being punishable by death. Not to be overly sensationalist here, there are lots of people who have traveled in anti-LGBTQ+ countries and have been just fine. There are also people who have not. It’s a case-by-case situation.

6. Be sure that sex toys are legal

In some countries, traveling with sexually explicit material can be used as evidence of sex work which may result in you being detained while traveling. Transgender and gender-nonconforming people are often unfairly targeted, be aware that in recent years there have been a few instances where people have used sex toys to victimize LGBTQ+ travelers. One couple was the victim of an alleged hate crime by TSA agents and another couple was arrested in Malaysia for being in possession of a sex toy. Keep in mind that traveling with these items into some countries is illegal. Be very cautious and do your homework before crossing borders with anything you think could be questionable.

7. Consider who you disclose your identity to

Consider who you disclose your identity to while you are traveling in countries that are not as LGBTQ-affirming as your home country.

8. Walk with confidence

Appear confident while walking in public areas. The more afraid and buckled over you look, the more of a target you’ll appear to be.

9. Invest in your personal safety

When in doubt invest in personal safety, if taking the more expensive cab ride over the bus ride seems like the safer option for you, do it.

Andrew Dobson runs Dobbernationloves , an LGBTQ+ travel blog based in Toronto and shares these very helpful tips on international travel safety.

2. Use the geo search to research your destination prior to leaving home

Use the geo-search feature on dating apps like Scruff and Grindr before you depart for your trip. You can ask locals about what the most popular gay bars and businesses are before you even arrive. Many destinations have suffered from gay bar closures so weekly or monthly LGBTQ+ parties are the norm and locals are always in the know.

3. Connect with the locals before you arrive

Use gay dating apps to connect with locals before you arrive and you’ll find friendly folks keen to show a tourist around. This is particularly helpful if you’re visiting a country like Germany where bartenders may not speak English.

4. Keep spots you discover confidential in sensitive destinations

If you’re visiting places like Egypt or Jordan where the LGBTQ+ community is largely underground for safety reasons, be sure to keep the spots you discover confidential to protect the local LGBTQ+ community. Posting about a popular gay coffee shop hangout in Cairo on TripAdvisor, for example, is a no-no.

5. Negative LGBTQ+ laws may not reflect tourist areas

Remember that just because a country’s government may have negative LGBTQ+ policies, doesn’t mean it isn’t a great gay holiday destination. The Maldives, for example, has laws in place for locals but during our visit to the Four Seasons Maldives, a majority of the guests at the resort were gay couples. Research the hotel and resort brands you’re planning on staying with before you book to ensure they are LGBTQ+ friendly.

6. Certain regions may be very LGBTQ+ friendly within a conservative country

Indonesia is the largest known as a conservative Muslim country but ironically the island of Bali is considered to be one of the best LGBTQ+ destinations in Asia. There can be significant tolerance differences based on each region you visit. Many hotels host luxurious gay honeymoons in Bali

7. Do your research on festival dates

Research the annual LGBTQ+ festivals to determine when the destination is likely to offer the most fun on holiday. In North America, we’re familiar with Pride parades but in Europe, the annual festival is referred to as CSD Celebrations or Christopher Street Day. LGBTQ+ festivals vary based on the culture of a place and its people. North American and Europe are known for flashy parades and all-night parties, where some smaller towns or more reserved countries focus on political protest, poetry readings or events centered around theatre and film.

Contact your hotel ahead of time

If you’re traveling with a same-sex friend or partner we always suggest contacting your hotel in advance to confirm what sort of bedding they offer. In some countries, two men will always be booked into a room with separate beds. In other countries, they’re happy to provide one bed for two men but you’d have to specify that in advance as they’ll automatically assume you’re traveling friends.

Why we wrote this article & did this study

Lyric grew up in Hollywood surrounded by actors, producers, and what she thought was a very open and accepting community for LGBTQ+ individuals. It wasn’t until she was 13 when she overheard her Uncle explaining that he was concerned he would be fired from an acting job if they found out he was gay, that she realized even one of the most liberal US communities was still plagued with homophobia.

Since then, LGBTQ+ rights have been at the forefront of Lyric’s awareness. She wondered how safe the US was for the LGBTQ+ community vs the rest of the world after hearing stories from other travelers. We then decided to dive deep into the subject and what we found was shocking.

So many questions entered our minds. For example, “Is it safe to travel to countries where the death penalty or life imprisonment is still a sentence for being openly gay?”

As travel journalists, we wanted to help the LGBTQ+ community educate themselves on the very complex and layered world of staying safe during international travel. But also, to try to bring more awareness to the often horrific treatment of LGBTQ+ people in many parts of the world. And hopefully, this will bring about change, acceptance, and love for all people regardless of their orientation.

As a new era of visibility and advocacy leads to greater protection and legal rights for the LGBTQI+ community, there are more and more exciting destinations around the world where you can be your true, authentic self.

For years, TPG has partnered with the nonprofit Rainbow Railroad to support and rescue LGBTQIA+ individuals. This year, we doubled down on those efforts.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Kaohsiung's lively youth scene has helped shape this less-touristy second city of Taiwan into an LGBTQI+ destination. The emergence of the city's queer culture will be recognized when it hosts WorldPride 2025.

You don't need to wait until 2025 to check out the city's LGBTQI+ scene, though. Taiwan's LGBTQ rights are considered the most progressive in Asia, with same-sex activity and marriage legal as of May 2019. The gay scene in Kaohsiung is less flashy and a bit discreet, so you'll have to know where you're going and anticipate being greeted by an intercom buzz to get into gay bars and clubs. Top spots to check out include Private Life Gay Bar and Barcode Kaohsiung.

The cocktail: Try a Taiwanese Tea cocktail with Earl Grey tea, vodka, grapefruit juice, lemon juice and honey.

Auckland, New Zealand

One of the most closed-off countries throughout the pandemic, New Zealand is just starting to reopen to tourism, making now a great time to plan a trip. LGBTQI+ visitors find a safe haven in the progressive ways of New Zealand, especially in the cosmopolitan streets of Auckland.

Start with a tour of downtown Auckland's Karangahape Road (known as "K Road" to Kiwis), where clubs like G.A.Y. and Family Bar and Club welcome all with the warm, inviting spirit New Zealanders are known for. Depending on the night, head to either Phoenix Cabaret or Caluzzi Cabaret (both on K Road) for some of the country's most elite and bawdy drag. As for your daytime fun, Auckland is near several excellent beaches, islands and rainforests worth exploring.

Malta's 300-plus days of sunshine offer a bright welcome to all LGBTQI+ visitors. The country continues to top the ​​International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association's Europe Rainbow index as the most progressive in Europe when it comes to LGBTQI+ rights. Malta banned conversion therapy in 2016 (the first country in Europe to do so) and has passed LGBTQ rights equality at a constitutional level.

The compact island has only a few gay bars and clubs, as some of its legacy LGBTQI+ spots shuttered during the pandemic. Still, you'll find a hopping scene at Michelangelo Club, where dance parties pick up late. Additionally, there's The Thirsty Barber, a prime spot for a more refined cocktail scene. The best time to visit is during Malta's all-encompassing Pride celebration in September.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is arguably the LGBTQI+ capital of the South Pacific. The progressive city is welcoming to LGBTQI+ visitors year-round, though the best time to visit is during Sydney's three-weekend Mardi Gras celebration in February and March. The city will also host WorldPride 2023 from Feb. 17 to March 5 next year, so plan your trip now, as it will be the hub of epic fun.

If you're looking to stay in the heart of it all, Darlinghurst is the place to be. Stroll Oxford Street for some of Sydney's best LGBTQI+ bars, clubs, bookstores and restaurants. And don't pass up the chance to be in the audience at The Imperial Erskineville's Drag N Dine show — high-quality camp in a classic cabaret setting.

Belgrade, Serbia

While Serbia doesn't top the list of the most progressive countries advancing LGBTQI+ rights, Belgrade's an enclave for the LGBTQI+ community, even though discretion is advised. Despite a history of Pride parade bans, Belgrade's recent consecutive string of successful Pride events has proved the city a worthy host of EuroPride 2022, which took place in September.

Start your visit at the Pride Info Centre in the heart of the city for information on local events and insider recs. You'll find a few gay bars and clubs in and around Belgrade's Terazije Square: Musk Machine is the go-to spot for dance parties, while XL Bar is a reliable option for cocktails and drag.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence is a small, culturally rich city. Its LGBTQI+ community is anchored by nearby Brown University, Johnson & Wales University and Providence College.

You don't have to go far to find a cluster of gay watering holes that dot the city's downtown area. Mainstay bars like Mirabar and The Stable are great examples of what you can expect in this friendly city. Stop by The Dark Lady and EGO for rotating drag events and dance parties. Try to time your visit for mid-June when Providence hosts Rhode Island Pride.

Saugatuck, Michigan

Offering a Provincetown, Massachusetts-meets-Fire Island, New York vibe in the Midwest, Saugatuck is an LGBTQI+ summer escape on the freshwater beaches of Lake Michigan. This summer resort town in Michigan is a three-hour drive from Chicago and Detroit, with queer roots that date back to 1910 when the still-in-operation Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency began hosting artist retreats.

Expect a low-key scene here, as Saugatuck has only one gay bar: Dunes Resort. Luckily, The Dunes has a happening pool scene along with weekend dance parties, drag bingo and karaoke. For something a bit more toned down, grab a coffee at gay-owned Uncommon Coffee Roasters, a town watering hole since 1994.

Thessaloniki, Greece

A charming Greek port city just off the Aegean Sea, Thessaloniki's relaxed culture and hip nightlife have fostered an emerging LGBTQI+ scene. The good word's gotten out, and Thessaloniki has been tapped to host EuroPride 2024.

Take a stroll along Pavlou Mela Street, where you'll find bars, restaurants, cafes and shops that are easygoing and cater to an LGBTQI+ crowd, especially the area's active lesbian community. Tap into the energy of the city by starting with visits to Enola and Anothen Cafe Bar.

Toronto, Canada

Canada has long been a leader in LGBTQ rights, from adding protection for sexual orientation to its constitution in 1995 to becoming the first country in the Americas to pass same-sex marriage in 2005. So it's no surprise that Toronto, the country's largest city, is a hub of LGBTQI+ culture. The city's Church-Wellesley Village (known locally as "The Village") is the go-to spot, with a variety of shops, restaurants, bars and a queer community center.

The best time to visit The Village is during its lively Pride Month festival that runs all of June. The month's celebrations culminate with a Pride parade where you're more than likely to catch a glimpse of the country's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, waving a Pride flag.

Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador 's gay rights have advanced considerably in recent years. The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2019, but its history dates back to 1998 when it banned discrimination based on sexual orientation at the constitutional level. Quito's the place to be for the LGBTQI+ community, as party buses fill the streets nightly and gay nightclubs keep the party going late into weekend nights.

If you plan to dance the night away, know that you'll need some time to adjust to the high altitude. Quito is set amid the Andes at an elevation of 9,350 feet — that's almost twice the altitude of Denver , which sits 5,279 feet above sea level. Most of the queer-centric action happens in Quito's Mariscal district, an area lovingly known by locals as the "Pink Zone." I'm a gay travel writer and think these are the 5 safest, most queer-friendly Caribbean travel destinations

• As a white, cisgender gay travel writer, the Caribbean is one of my favorite travel destinations.
• However, local laws make some islands less friendly to the queer community than others.
• The following Caribbean destinations are where I've felt the most welcome as an LGBTQIA+ traveler, plus local tips for each.

I'm a white, cisgender gay travel writer. And while my experience could never reflect that of all queer people, I have found the Caribbean to be among the safest and friendliest places for LGBTQIA+ travelers.

As travelers become more judicious with their cash and PTO, I regularly find myself assessing how truly queer-friendly and safe a destination is before recommending it to others, or planning a trip myself.

The Caribbean is one region I return again and again. I have visited many of the destinations there on multiple occasions and found the following to be the safest and friendliest places for travelers in the LGBTQIA+ community.

My recommendations are based on my own personal travels, professional reporting, the stories of queer friends and colleagues, and research on each of the island's attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ people.

I've been to St. Barth a few times, and feel just as safe and comfortable there as I would in a queer-friendly city like New York City, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.

St. Barth's is a territory of France, which means travelers benefit from the country's progressive protections for LGBTQIA+ folks . 

Gay marriage is, therefore, legal in St. Barth, widely celebrated, and you will find lots of queer locals and ex-pats alike overtly integrated into society — this is a place where queerness doesn't have to hide.

Where to go:  The island draws LGBTQIA+ travelers for its beauty, sophistication, and party atmosphere — even if it lacks a dedicated gay bar. Le. Ti , the island's popular party spot, does have some gay energy, though, which increases as the night goes on. The night I was there, for instance, my friend and I danced on stage to ABBA and other pop favorites.

Saline Beach is arguably one of the island's most beautiful, and while it's not exclusively queer, it acts as a de facto gay beach and tends to draw a more colorful crowd as well as nudists.

Where to stay:  Thanks to the island's inclusivity, you'll find LGBTQIA+ folks staying at virtually every hotel, but I usually book Le Toiny for its massive rooms that come with their own private pool. The beach club, located on a cliff-hugging road, has a fun, chill atmosphere with a daytime DJ and a fabulous beach hut-style shop with gender-inclusive clothing. 

Le Toiny also manages the stunning Villa Nureyev , which was originally the vacation home of the notably gay Russian ballet dancer . Nureyev lived alone in the house most of the time but had many notable queer icon guests stay with him, including Madame Marie Helène de Rothschild, Jackie Kennedy, and Grace Kelly. 

Other tips: Two of my favorite queer-owned boutiques include clothing stores, Pascha St. Barth and Caravan. Form Fitness is a multi-level gym with nice views that offers travelers daily rates and is also queer-owned. 

I traveled to San Pedro, Belize with my (also gay) best friend, where many people assumed we were a couple and greeted us with huge smiles. This is par for the course in Belize, where service always feels welcoming, genuine, and personal no matter who you are or who you love.

It's important to note that Belize is actually more culturally conservative than it appears and LGBTQIA+ individuals don't have all the same protections that they might in the US.

While same-sex activity was decriminalized in 2016, there's technically no recognition of same-sex couples; recognition of non-binary people and trans rights are virtually non-existent. 

However, the attitude I experienced — especially in tourist-centric San Pedro — did not reflect that. I felt comfortable and it seemed that both LGBTQIA+ locals and visitors could be themselves.

Where to go:  First and foremost, the beaches — Isla Bonita, after all, was made famous by Madonna in a song of the same name. The stretches of tropical white sand lined with palm trees are an allure, regardless of your sexual orientation and gender identity.

I also recommend Belize for excellent day sailing, jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. During my week-long dive trip, my friend and I met other queer divers looking to experience some of the most coveted sites on earth, including Hol Chan , a marine reserve bursting with aquatic life and activity that's easily accessible from San Pedro. 

Everything about my time here felt very inclusive and I noticed quite a few queer folks partying at Secret Beach , a beautiful stretch of sand dotted with beach bars that are isolated on the West side of the island and reached by partially paved roads.

Blue Bayou is an ideal place to sit submerged in shallow water at a picnic table and enjoy a cocktail under a thatched umbrella, play drinking games, or enjoy lobsters or elevated bar food. 

San Pedro also surprised me with its culinary scene, which has a "sand in toes" mentality. Try Elvi's Kitchen , where the warm (and complimentary!) banana bread is a must alongside delectable seafood dishes; Hidden Treasure , a romantic restaurant for date night; The French Touch , which is run by a French ex-pat and serves tasty classics; or The Truck Stop , an outdoor eatery with live entertainment.

Where to stay: The rooms and villas at Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection will likely speak to gay men like myself who are inspired by design. The accommodations are blanketed in soothing cream colors and sunbleached wood, outfitted with hanging pendants. Clean and minimalist, the rooms have gigantic, spa-like bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that lead to private terraces. 

There are also two pools, a private beach, a bar, a small but worthy spa, a piano bar, and a cocktail lounge.

Other tips: First-time visitors should know that you must land in Belize City and take a ferry (roughly 90 minutes) or a pedal jumper plane (which runs throughout the day and takes about 15 mins) to reach San Pedro.

On the island, rent a golf cart to explore the seaside town and greater Ambergris Caye. 

Brightly-hued in color, I was initially drawn to vibrant Cartagena thanks to recommendations from queer friends and I'm glad I did. With a small-town-meets-big-city feel, it was easy to navigate and felt safe.

Colombia is ahead of the pack in Latin America when it comes to LGBTQIA+ rights, affording its citizens many similar protections that we benefit from in the US.

Culturally, there is still some discrimination and taboo attitudes towards queer individuals, but the tide is slowly shifting on social acceptance, too. I thought Cartagena felt safe, and it is regularly regarded as one of the safest places to visit in Colombia . 

Where to go: The walled city of Cartagena's "centro" is a UNESCO World Heritage site and where you'll want to spend most of your time. Explore cobblestone streets, richly painted Colonial-era homes, and a vibrancy that inspired me greatly.

In August, Cartagena is home to some of the largest pride celebrations in the Caribbean, with a parade and march, drag events, and plenty of rainbows flooding the streets. The Rumors Festival , a circuit party, and events, also happens in conjunction with Pride.

Year-round, Playa Hollywood acts as the city's gay beach, where queer residents and visitors go for fun and sun.

There are also a few gay watering holes and clubs with LGBTQIA+ parties in Cartagena; in my experience, they are fun but do not offer what travelers from bigger cities might expect from queer culture. Some of my favorite cocktail experiences were actually away from the queer scene, in places like the mesmerizing courtyard at Sofitel Santa Clara , at Townhouse 's rooftop, or at Alquimico .

For a day trip or an overnight stay, board a speed boat to Blue Apple Beach , which hosts a beach club and small hotel on Tierra Bomba Island. Apart from great food, a pool, and a prime spot on the ocean, Blue Apple is an incredibly inclusive community. A quote from their website reads: "We are straight, gay, black, white, and all the things in between." 

Where to stay: Built surrounding a Republican-style mansion steps from the walled city, Ermita, Tribute Portfolio Hotel faces the Caribbean Sea and has comfortable, contemporary rooms with patterned wallpapers and rich textures. My favorite part of this hotel was its rooftop pool and bar with ocean views, as well as the lovely courtyard for breakfast, and the Middle Eastern restaurant, Senora Ayda, for lunch. 

For other intimate gay-friendly accommodations in Cartagena, consider the gay-operated Hotel Casa Lola or the charming Hotel Quadrifolio .

Other tips: Plan a picturesque day trip to the Rosario Islands, which are roughly a one-hour boat ride from Cartagena, with plenty of marine life for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Cartagena is also a hidden gem for shopping. I like to contribute business to trendy St. Dom , Portomar , Cubavera , and Jon Sonen for linen; Velez and Sabandija for leather goods. Casa Chiquis , a hybrid home decor and clothing shop featuring beautiful treasures in both categories, should not be missed.  

San Juan, Puerto Rico, has the ideal mix of things to do and see. It's clear why LGBTQIA+ travelers like me flock to the island time and time again.

As a territory of the US, LGBTQIA+ people in Puerto Rico benefit from the same protections afforded to LGBTQIA+ American citizens.

That said, I'd be remiss not to mention that even in one of the most queer-friendly places in the Caribbean, there is still some prejudice, with a notable recent wave of worrying discrimination, violence, and even killings of trans people. 

However, there is a multitude of reasons why I return again and again, namely, the places listed below.

Where to go: Almost a right of passage, any queer visitor to Puerto Rico should make a trip to Condado Beach , with its gay stretch of sand filled with Speedo-clad hunks that congregate here. Though, it's important to note that all queer people regardless of gender (or body type!) are welcome and encouraged to visit. 

Always filled with good vibes, JungleBird Bar is a restaurant and bar headed up by queer chef Paxx Caraballo Moll. It offers some of the best bites and beverages in the trendy neighborhood of Santurce, right near La Placita, which also happens to be one of the most queer-forward neighborhoods in the city.   

For LGBTQIA+ nightlife, Tia Maria Liquor Store may seem like a place you'd expect to stock up, but it's actually one of San Juan's most popular bars for locals and curious visitors and is equally welcoming to all genders. It attracts a slightly older crowd, whereas Oasis and Loverboy attract younger crowds and the latter has occasional drag shows. 

Where to stay: Colorful and slightly kitschy, Coqui del Mar is San Juan's dedicated LGBTQIA+ hotel that's adults-only, with a grown-up, flirtatious vibe. Rooms have a simplistic Airbnb beach cottage feel, but the community outshines the design. There's also a lovely outdoor garden, two pools, and a hot tub. 

The island is also home to Caribe Hilton , the site where the first Piña Colada was ever made. 

Other tips: With such a strong and unique queer culture, there's plenty of LGBTQIA+-friendly shopping in San Juan , including hat shops, art galleries, bookstores, and gender-inclusive clothing boutiques focused on sustainability.

Curaçao's breezy spirit makes LGBTQIA+ travelers like me feel welcome, thanks to a friendly and welcoming culture, catered nightlife, events and accommodations, and a Pride celebration.

Though its neighbor and sister island Aruba often steals the spotlight, Curaçao is a hidden gem known for its saying "Biba i laga Biba'' which translates to "Live and let live."

LGBTQIA+ travelers that descend upon Curaçao are welcomed by this attitude and surrounded by plenty of natural beauty, pristine waters, and coral reefs, not to mention 70 dive sites, 35 alluring beaches, and adorable Dutch Caribbean architecture throughout . 

Curaçao's record on rights and protections for LGBTQIA+ travelers isn't as strong as some of the other options on this list, but the tiny island is making progress, and attitudes are already friendlier to queer travelers than most other places in the Caribbean .

Discrimination laws are in place for queer people and same-sex sexual activity is legal, but same-sex marriage itself is not legal yet despite there being an ongoing debate and movement for that to change soon. Rights for trans people are currently nonexistent. 

Where to go: Though I haven't been during the festival itself, Curaçao hosts a Pride parade and other year-round events catered at queer individuals, and there are several LGBTIA+ associations on the island.

The annual Carnival celebrations — filled with costumes, floats, dancing, and a celebratory mood — happen in February and have long drawn queer travelers like myself. Meanwhile, Mambo Beach is a gay-friendly beach with multiple trendy beach clubs.

Despite its smaller size, Curaçao also has good nightlife options for LGBTQIA+ travelers, including the dedicated Rainbow Lounge and Bar. Cabana Beach has a mixed, friendly crowd, as does Wet & Wild Beach Club, which hosts a popular Sunday Funday-style day party. 

On the island, take ATV rides through Shete Boka National Park, hike the highest peak on the island at Christoffel National Park, or opt for underwater aqua safari tours, snorkeling, and diving.

For a bucket list experience, book a private boat charter to the uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao, "Little Curaçao," where you'll enjoy secluded and pristine beaches, a jaw-dropping shipwreck, and a lighthouse. 

Where to stay: The majority of hotels are gay-friendly and the island has seen a surge of new openings in the past two years, including Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort , Dreams Curaçao Resort, Spa & Casino , and soon, couples will enjoy the first Sandals on the island — Sandals Royal Curaçao . 

My suggestion is the gay-friendly Bario Hotel , which has reasonable rates on studio, suite, and apartment-style accommodations.

Baoase Luxury Resort is another queer-friendly favorite and has an island-chic, welcoming atmosphere, and villa-style rooms, many of which contain private plunge pools.

Other tips: In the main port town of Willemstad, Pietermaai is a trendy neighborhood that attracts queer visitors and is similar to Miami's Wynwood, filled with murals and trendy places to eat and have a night out.

My husband & I recently returned from the October 2023 Spain trip. We really loved our Detour Tours travel experience. Our trip was made up of 16 fellow travelers - 4 couples & 8 singles who were all personable and easy going. We had a wonderful Tour Leader, Scott, who was very knowledgeable, experienced, approachable and looked out for all of us.  He went out of his way to be inclusive and was a great source of information on the local sites and activities.  Detours arranged the hotel accommodations, the airport transfers, and the travel between the 4 amazing cities of Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. The tour included walking tours and a major attraction at the start of each destination city, but the rest of the time we were free to explore, join a group activity, or just chill in our hotel room or a nearby cafe. Our favorite experiences were the walking tours because the local gay tour guides were so knowledgeable, informative and personable. We learned a lot about the rich local history and culture of the Spanish cities we visited.  Our second favorite experiences were the fun group dinners and pre-and post dinner drinks that Scott organized and which most of us joined in. Although there was no pressure to join in other optional activities, we ended up signing up for a number of them such as cooking class, watching a flamenco show, and seeing the Prado Museum. The 12-day tour of New Zealand was an absolute adventure from start to finish! Exploring Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Queenstown provided a diverse and captivating experience that left us in awe of this beautiful country. Highlights included ascending the Sky Tower in Auckland, where the panoramic views took our breath away. The wine tour on Waiheke Island introduced us to some of the finest local wines in a picturesque setting. Hobbiton was a dream come true for any Lord of the Rings fan, with its charming hobbit holes and lush landscapes. The thrill of Zorbing in Rotorua was unlike anything we've ever experienced, adding an exciting twist to our journey. And who could forget the majestic beauty of Milford Sound? Flying back from Milford Sound to Queenstown on a Cessna plane was an unforgettable highlight, offering unparalleled views of the stunning fjords and rugged landscapes below. Throughout the trip, our tour leader, Chase, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. From organizing activities to providing insightful suggestions, Chase's expertise and enthusiasm enhanced our experience tremendously. In conclusion, the journey through New Zealand was nothing short of extraordinary. From its vibrant cities to its breathtaking natural wonders, this tour showcased the best that this remarkable country has to offer. We returned home with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the beauty of New Zealand. Highly recommended for any adventure seeker!

Tim and I had an amazing time on our Detours trip to Costa Rica. This was our first time on an all-male trip, so we did not know what to expect. We have already registered for our second trip with Detours, so you know where this review is going. Everything leading up to the trip was handled with professionalism and ease by Detours. That same vibe continued once the trip started. Brandon, our trip leader, was high-energy, fun, kind, inclusive, organized, connected, and on top of his game. He did not miss a beat, all details were attended to, and he made the trip enjoyable for all. Clay was equally kind and fun, and we look forward to one of his guided trips in the future. Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We loved the variety of our locations (the beach, the mountains, the hot springs / Volcano). A little bit of everything was perfect. We participated in so many unforgettable activities (ziplining, Tarzan swing, ATV, white-water rafting, canyoneering, sunset cruises, beaches, waterfalls, pool parties, park tours, . . . ) that filled our days and brought us even closer to the group of guys we traveled with. The beauty is you get to choose your own adventure. Do it all, or do nothing, no pressure. If that is not enough, you get to experience it all with a diverse group of men from across the globe. The friendships and connections we made were easy even for introverts and heightened our positive experiences. We hope to continue these friendships in our future travels. I took my first and certainly not the last Detours trip. It was to Portugal and Morocco, in October. My tour Guides Ollie and Shane were awesome. They helped with any questions and looked into any additional activities that you might want to do. I specifically asked about a balloon ride in Morocco that was one of my highlights. The accommodations were all great. This trip exceeded all my expectations. I have always been a solo traveler and it was nice to share this with fellow travelers. I found I did activities I most likely would have not done on my own. Taking a Tajine cooking class, gone on a camel ride, private dinner for the group at someone's home. This gave me the opportunity to explore and understand the culture and perspective of life that I would have missed otherwise. There were many planned activities but also plenty of down time, to do your own thing. I look forward to many more Detours adventures.

I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

Choosing Detours Travel was the best decision I have very made seriously, without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had!!!!! I have never traveled with a group of 16 Gay Men of various backgrounds, interests; to be very honest this was an "out of the box" moment for me which caused much anxiety going in. From the moment I arrived in Athens a day early I reached out via What's App to see who was in town, hooked up with 3 guys in a few hours and the adventure began. Our Leader Brandon who was in contact with us as soon as we began the adventure and continued to check on all the group several times either in person or on line, everyday this man is on top of everything! He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .  

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region. 

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

• The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
• International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
• Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
• The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
• The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
