hallmark time travel series

Hallmark has just announced a brand new primetime series called The Way Home . This is a series that looks enchanting and fun. Moreover, there is a time-travel twist!

Here are all the details.

Hallmark Announces New Dramatic Series The Way Home

On Thursday, Deadline announced that Hallmark has greenlit a brand new primetime dramatic series called The Way Home .

Lisa Hamilton Daly, the Executive VP of Programming at Crown Media Family Networks is thrilled about her first series since taking this position last October.

One of my passions is developing series and it’s beyond thrilling to spearhead the development of The Way Home and others for Crown Media.

The talented mother-daughter team of Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke, who are behind Heartland will be executive producing this series, as well as several others.

Laurie Ferneau, senior VP of development at Crown Media Family Networks also shared her enthusiasm.

I can’t wait to share the emotional story of the Landry women so beautifully and creatively imagined by Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke and that is sure to become appointment TV for our viewers.

Here is what the story is about.

What is Hallmark’s Time-Traveling Series  The Way Home About?

First, Hannah Pillemer, exec VP of creative affairs for MarVista shared a brief synopsis about this upcoming series.

We were all drawn to this extraordinary, unique story of three generations of women, haunted by tragedy and past secrets, who discover an ability to travel through time and potentially change their future.

However, there is a more detailed synopsis shared in the exclusive coverage.

Kat Landry, her 15-year-old daughter Alice and Kat’s estranged mother Del are all strong, willful, and independent. More than 20 years prior, life-changing events created a chasm in their family that time has yet to repair. Kat and Del still aren’t on speaking terms. Alice has never met her grandmother and is unaware of the reasons for their fractured family. When the three generations come together under one roof for the first time in more than two decades, a surprising discovery unexpectedly sets the trio on a path toward healing and helps them find their way back to each other

This is a story that combines drama with magical realism. Obviously, the prime directive that shows like Star Trek abide by is not happening here. Instead of doing nothing to affect time, this series purposely travels in time to change circumstances.

Moreover, this new drama should interest both those who liked Good Witch and Chesapeake Shores . Hallmark canceled the former last year, and the latter will air the final season sometime in the late summer.

Who Is Starring In The Way Home ?

Currently, Hallmark has not cast The Way Home . That information will likely be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

MarVista is excited to bring new drama series 'The Way Home' to Hallmark in 2023! Hallmark's The Way Home Season 2: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and Everything to Know

Can we jump in the time-traveling pond to the premiere date?

Chyler Leigh, Sadie Laflamme-Snow, and Andie MacDowell, The Way Home

Chyler Leigh, Sadie Laflamme-Snow, and Andie MacDowell, The Way Home

The wait is almost over for Season 2 of Hallmark Channel 's The Way Home . Andie MacDowell ( Cedar Cove ), Chyler Leigh ( Grey's Anatomy , Supergirl ), and Sadie Laflamme-Snow lead the time-travel drama, which follows three generations of strong-willed, independent Landry women — Del, the family matriarch; Kat, her estranged daughter; and Alice, Del's granddaughter, respectively.

Created by Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke, and Marly Reed, the one-hour series explores the trio's journey to find their way back to each other while uncovering their fractured family's mysterious (and magical) past following a life-altering event 20 years ago. Secrets begin to unravel when Alice discovers she has the ability to time travel after falling into a magical pond near the Landry estate. The debut season of  The Way Home debuted Jan. 15, 2023 on Hallmark Channel, and ran for 10 episodes, culminating in a twisty finale that aired March 26, 2023.

With Season 2's return just around the corner, here is everything to know about its release date, who's returning for the upcoming season, the storyline, and much more.

The Way Home Season 2 release date

Hallmark Channel announced in November 2023 that Season 2 of The Way Home will premiere Sunday, Jan. 21 at 9/8c, and consist of 10 episodes.

The time-travel drama's first season, which also featured 10 episodes, ran from January to March 2023. Hallmark Channel announced a Season 2 renewal weeks before the freshman season ended, a huge vote of confidence for the series.

Is there a trailer for  The Way Home  Season 2?

Yes! Hallmark released an official teaser for the upcoming season in December 2023, one month before the series is set to return to the small screen. There are a lot of questions to answer when the Landrys are back in action. If the promo is any indication of what's to come, Season 2 is bound to be more intriguing and mystical than ever.

The Way Home Season 2 storyline

Season 2 of The Way Home will pick up immediately after the events of the freshman finale, which ended with quite a few surprises. But before we get into what that potentially means, here's a refresher on what went down in the Season 1 finale.

The freshman closer revealed that Kat (Leigh) and Alice (Laflamme-Snow) were responsible for Colton's (Jefferson Brown) death. After they time-traveled back to the past with the hopes of rewriting it, Colton swerved to avoid hitting both Landry women on the road, dying as a result of the devastating accident. In the same episode, Kat also came to grips with the fact that she was the reason her mother, Del (MacDowell), believed her husband was having an affair. Turns out, Kat was the mysterious woman Del saw at his funeral.

But that wasn't all that took place in the final Season 1 episode. Kat discovered that her missing brother, Jacob (Remy Smith), had jumped into the pond too and had been transported to… 1814? And that she was the faceless witch who was chased by a mob before disappearing into the pond in the series' first episode.

In the romance department, Kat's childhood friend-turned-crush, Elliot (Evan Williams), admitted that he loved her after she informed him that she finally signed divorce papers. That was good news for the new couple, right? Unfortunately, things turned out to be a little more complicated than Kat planned. Elliot revealed he was ready to turn over a new leaf in his life, possibly without Kat by his side.

According to Hallmark, Season 2 begins where the last season left off, with Kat telling Del she knows what happened to Jacob. As Kat continues her quest to find Jacob and bring him home, she and Alice uncover unexpected revelations about their origins that bring answers to some questions, while raising new ones.

The Way Home  cast

The Way Home features a large ensemble cast, but the main mysteries pivot around the three Landry women — played by MacDowell, Leigh, and Laflamme-Snow — who are at the forefront of the story. MacDowell and Leigh also have executive producer privileges.

Hallmark has yet to announce any significant cast additions for Season 2, but we wouldn't be surprised if a new face or two popped up, especially with the portal now opened to 1814.

Here are the main cast members:

  • Andie MacDowell as Delilah "Del" Landry
  • Chyler Leigh as Katherine "Kat" Landry
  • Sadie Laflamme-Snow as Alice "Ali" Dhawan
  • Evan Williams as Elliot "El" Augustine
  • Jefferson Brown as Colton "Cole" Landry
  • Remy Smith as Jacob "Jake" Landry
  • Al Mukadam as Brady Dhawan
  • Alex Hook as teenage Kat
  • David Webster as teenage Elliot
  • Siddharth Sharma as teenage Brady

"The Way Home" finale, Hallmark Channel.

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from “Bring Me to Life,” the Season 2 finale of  Hallmark’s “ The Way Home ,” which streams on Peacock and Hallmark Movies Now.

Popular on Variety

In the finale, it also seemed like Elliot (Evan Williams) made a breakthrough episode about the rules of the pond, allowing him to travel back to 1999 with Alice to get his five extra minutes with Colton. Elliot postured that people can travel in tandem with the Landry women, but not go into the future. However, this Colton twist brings the second part of that theory into question.

But that wasn’t the end for Season 2 finale bombshells. The episode also raised questions about Casey Goodwin (Vaughan Murrae), who showed up miraculously to tell Del that the Goodwin family would no longer be purchasing the Landry farm. When they delivered the new paperwork, Alice noticed that Casey was wearing a ring around their neck that looked suspiciously like Brady’s (Al Mukadam) and Kat’s engagement ring that Kat had given to Alice earlier in the season. So now we must question whether Casey is also a time-traveler, and what is her true relationship to the Landry family.

How long have you been planning this Colton twist?

Alex Clarke: For a while. This show is so complex, and is three different shows at any given time. Everything has to kind of intertwine with one era informing another, so yes, you have to know the end before you begin. The idea of Colton as a potential time-traveler was in our minds in the beginning of Season 1. What is so nice is that Jefferson, who plays Colton, has always played the role in this incredibly enigmatic way where you are not sure if he’s recognizing people, if knows more than we’re sharing — and it’s really been such a gift to watch. Now, as we go into Season 3, you can look back and notice the little nuances that you don’t notice the first time you watch an episode. He did a miraculous job with that.

Does that mean he knew it was adult Elliot in the finale?

Clarke: We can neither confirm nor deny! That’s what’s so great about Jefferson’s performance. All we will say is that we will answer a lot of these questions in Season 3.

Are there any scenes that you recommend fans go back and rewatch in light of this twist?

Heather Conkie: I expect the audience will go back and do exactly as Alex said, and watch all of the Colton scenes and see them from a slightly different perspective now.

Clarke: I think one of the things we were heavily influenced by when we first got into the writers’ room was “The Sixth Sense.” Our goal was always that moment at the end of the season where you go, “Wait, what?!” And then you rewatch the whole thing with this new piece of information, and see things in different lights…

This massive revelation in Season 2 is not just that Colton is a time-traveler, but also why does Casey have a ring around their neck that looks like Alice’s?

What does the Colton revelation mean for Elliot’s “Flynn Factor” theory? Is that completely null and void, because Colton obviously can go into the future?

Clarke: Any rule that we explain in the show is usually the right one. At our core, we follow the rules of the pond, because the minute we stop following the rules is the minute we lose the trust of the audience. We have the whole list. We have them up in the office and are very, very careful not to stray from the rules. We can find loopholes, or we can approach that rule in a different way, and that’s hard. But Elliot’s Flynn factor is important to the series.

You also put in a scene between Del and Evelyn Goodwin a few episodes ago that felt ominous, and did not give a lot of context. Are we going to find out more about what happened between those two and Colton in Season 3?

Jacob returns to the present in the finale, but we do not see him reunite with Del. What made you decide to save that for later?

Conkie : It felt right. As Alex said, we only have a limited time and it felt like that moment [between Del and Jacob] was too big a moment to squeeze in. It is inevitable. It will happen.

Clarke : This season was also really a story about Kat bringing Jacob home. It was about her quest to save him and the ultimate question was, can she bring him home? That question we did answer:Yes, and now her quest is done. She achieved that moment. Any reunion with Del is obviously something we all want to see, but that’s another story. The story that we were telling this season was about Kat. As a result, that moment of them heading towards the house and her being the one to say, “I wish dad could see this,” propels us to these big reveal moments. It was her story. We told her story.

Obviously, with all of our stories, there’s never really an end, or every end creates a new beginning. That’s something that we were really mindful of going into Season 3. The idea that every ending is a new beginning is quite a theme.

Does ending this chapter mean that Kat won’t be tempted to go back to 1814 even if she now knows Thomas is still alive?

Clarke: We only give you as much as you need. That’s kind of the motto of the show. [Finding out that Thomas is alive] is a moment that raises a lot of questions for Kat, if and when she and Jacob walk through that kitchen door and what comes next.

Kat and Elliot kind of end on a question mark this season. What do those questions mean for their relationship?

Clarke: I think her closing that chapter is going to open up time for her and Elliot in a way that she never really has been able to give him. Kat is an incredibly impulsive person. She is someone that once she sets her mind to something, she won’t ever give up on it until it’s done, and potentially at the cost of a lot of other things that maybe she’s not even aware of. It will be interesting to see her character start to refocus her priorities.

Elliot has a “let there be light” epiphany at the end of the episode. Is he fully healed from the trauma of losing Colton now after getting to time travel?

Conkie: That was him breaking through not just a wall, but a whole way of thinking and regret. It may open him up in a different way. I think it will change that. He’s taking that step, and just bursting through that wall he put up around himself.

I think both Kat and Elliot are coming to each other with different perspectives now. Kat’s quest is done, but what’s next? Elliot also has way more understanding of why she has done what she’s done. That will leave them in a really interesting place next season.

Obviously, you can’t reveal who Casey Goodwin is to the Landrys, but what are your conversations like with your actors when you know there is going to be a major twist with their character? How much warning do you give them?

Conkie : I’ve always felt as a writer that it’s better to keep actors in the dark in a way, because they react to it immediately when it happens, as opposed to them thinking ahead of time. It’s always the case, but with Vaughan Murrae it was different. I think they had a theory when they got the role. They knew a little bit. They were a person who watched Season 1 with their mom, and they were a fan. So it was incredible for them to come play amongst people that they’ve been watching.

Clarke : To your point, Mom, I think even that very first day they kind of had an idea of where we were going with the character.

Del was developing a romance all season and was finally starting to really open up in these final episodes. What is reuniting with her long-lost son going to do to her drive to be with someone again?

Conkie: Alex and I have thought very hard about how would you handle that after 20-odd years of acceptance that it is never going to happen. It’s bound to change a person in a huge number of ways. Do you go back to treating that 32-year-old like an eight-year-old? Are you overly possessive? Do you push aside every single thing in your life? Other than that, just to get to know this person again, this adult, it’s bound to have a massive effect on Del. It’s going to have a massive effect on Port Haven, because they were such a part of this horrific disappearance and keeping her going in her time of absolute grief. It’s going to affect her relationships, for sure, with everyone.

Clarke: One of the things we always keep in mind is this idea of a happily ever after. That is such a happily ever after moment of a son who has been missing for 24 years walking through the door. What comes after that, though? It’s not like we freeze in time, close the book and we’re done. Happily ever after is a bit of a myth because there is always something after and inevitably it has its own challenges as much as it is a happy ending in the moment.

What is the overall percentage chance that we’re going to see Andie McDowell jump in this pond in Season 3?

Clarke: We are asking ourselves that exact question in the writers’ room. Never say never with anything on our show.We pride ourselves on jaw-drop moments, so there will definitely be more.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Sadie Laflamme-Snow (“The Apprentice”) has been cast in “The Way Home,” the network’s new, original primetime series set to premiere in 2023 on Hallmark Channel.

Laflamme-Snow plays 15-year-old Alice Hastings, who is none-too-thrilled when her mother Kat (Chyler Leigh, “Super Girl,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) moves them from Minneapolis back to Kat’s childhood home in the small, Canadian farm town of Port Haven, New Brunswick. Alice has never met her grandmother Del (Andie MacDowell, “Maid,” “ Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove ”), as she and Kat have been estranged for more than two decades following a series of lifechanging events. As Alice tries to come to grips with the end of her parents’ marriage and reluctantly acclimates to her new surroundings, she happens upon a surprising path that will lead her to answers about her family’s past she didn’t know she was looking for.

“We’re so pleased to have Sadie Laflamme-Snow as the youngest member of the Landry women in ‘The Way Home,’” remarked Laurie Ferneau, Senior Vice President, Development, Hallmark Media. “In her, we’ve found the perfect complement to Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh, and we can’t wait to see these three talented actresses help us bring the series to life.”

Laflamme-Snow is a Toronto-based graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada and was selected as a finalist for WBTV’s Actors in Training Program last year. Recent credits include roles in television movies, the lead in the Netflix animated series “Unicorn Academy,” a lead role in the independent feature Cascade , and a starring role in the upcoming season of the series “Slasher” for Shudder.

Although her 15-year-old daughter Alice is none-too-thrilled, Kat and her daughter arrive at her family’s farm, though the reunion isn’t what Kat had envisioned. As the three generations of women slowly work on finding their footing as a family, they embark on an enlightening – and surprising – journey none of them could have imagined.

“Chyler Leigh and Andie MacDowell are the perfect mother-daughter pairing for our new series, ‘The Way Home,’” said Lisa Hamilton Daly, Executive Vice President, Programming, Crown Media Family Networks. “We at Hallmark Channel cannot wait for her to grace our screens as a member of this cast.”

Hallmark Channel ‘s new family drama The Way Home follows three generations of mothers and daughters with complicated relationships… and a connection to a time-traveling portal?

Sunday’s premiere begins with a scene from Port Haven, New Brunswick, circa 1814, during which a mob of men run after a young woman whom they believe is a witch. Before they can catch her, the woman says something mysterious and jumps into a small body of water.

The Way Home Recap

Kat hasn’t been back home in 20 years because the place carries heavy memories of her dad and her little brother Jacob, both of whom have passed, even if Del has removed all traces of them from the house. This causes tension between mother and daughter, which is further complicated by Del’s insistence that she never sent a letter to Kat. Meanwhile, Kat and Alice aren’t faring much better, with Alice constantly in a teenage funk about her new home, school, etc.

Mom and daughter find a friendly face in Elliot ( Awkward ‘s Evan Williams), who was Kat’s neighbor/best friend before they lost touch and is now the high school’s science teacher. (He is also divorced, Del points out.) When Elliot sees Alice, something flickers across his face. Then at school, he tells Alice that if she ever needs to talk, he’s available any place, any time .

The Way Home Recap

In this timeline, Kat is still friends with Elliot and has just gotten a summer camp job, where she will meet her future husband and Alice’s father. The family dynamic is also completely different, as Alice learns when she has a warm and happy dinner with Kat, Del, Kat’s dad Colton ( When Hope Call ‘s Jefferson Brown) and her little brother Jacob.

After dinner, Alice finds teenage Elliot (David Webster) and tells him that he once said she could come to him for help. Back in the present, Kat finds a Polaroid that Jacob took during that 1999 dinner of her and an indistinguishable Alice. Meanwhile, Elliot reassures a worried Kat, who has no idea where Alice ran off to, that her daughter will find her way home. As the episode comes to a close, Elliot waits by the pond.

I like it. It’s good

Does hallmark programming appear on one of the streamers? This sounds interesting.

https://tvline.com/2022/10/31/peacock-hallmark-hub-live-streaming-tv-library-movies/

If you have Hulu Live, you can watch all of the Hallmark channels.

Frndly TV carries 3 Hallmark Channels.

I love that this is different from the normal Hallmark movies, and I can hardly wait for the next episode. Thank you, Hallmark. I am truly enjoying this series.

The little brother’s name is Jacob

Fixed, thanks!

I enjoyed it!

This sounds a little bit like “Kindred” on Hulu.

Something very different for Hallmark and I really enjoyed it! Strong and personable actors.

It was too slow

It was too slow and too boring. It certainly was way out of the romantic box that Hallmark usually has. The over hype didn’t live up to the opening hour.

I thought A LOT happened in the first episode -more conversation than action – but it is not a MOVIE. A series. It will take time to grow.

I enjoyed the show as well. It was interesting and not sappy. It’s a keeper for my Sunday viewing.

I was looking forward to the show but was disappointed. Slow, boring, and confusing.

I gave it a chance, found it slow and didn’t care for the cast. I’m done with it.

Did not like it . Will Not watch it anymore

You skipped over the best part – when Alice meets Jacob and her grandfather before they died or went missing. Director played it subtle, but that was so tender and huge and meaningful and begs the question if she can save them and should she?

I really enjoyed the opener. Can’t wait til next episode. Love Andie MacDowell in anything.

I DON’T KNOW IF I Will watch EPS 2.TO SOON TO TELL.

the ending of episode 1 keeps being interrupted. can you tell me how it endas. i am so disappointed. i have seen the first episode twice now and still the ending is always interrupted by another tv show.

Alice finds teenage Elliot in the barn and asks him to help her, reminding him that he said he would be there for her any place, any time. In the present time, Kat discovers the Polaroid in her brother’s time capsule. Just then Elliot texts her to say that everything is going to be fine. Kat asks, “How do you know that??” The final shot is Elliot standing at the edge of the pond, where he has found Alice’s backpack and phone.

Tuned in because the premise intrigued me, and was hooked pretty quickly. Love the New Brunswick setting, and love seeing Chyler Leigh again. I hope we get to hear her sing in this series. Amazing job casting her teenage self! I’ll definitely be tuning in to the next episode.

Wow! This is SO unexpected for a Hallmark show! Spooky. Intriguing. Made me ask “whoa…where the heck is THIS going?!?” Can’t wait for the next episode. 😱

I’ve told two friends about it. It wasn’t what I expected, it is intriguing.

Really well script and keeps your imagination wondering what will happen next I feel like a lot of mother’s and daughters go through this very ordeal if people would give it a try to take off I really think they will enjoy the series Thank you Hallmark I think it’s very interesting and great

I really enjoyed the first episode. For one thing I have always been a fan of Andie MacDowell. The acting in general was top notch. The story was fascinating and held my interest throughout. The last scene in this episode had both my husband and I wishing we could immediately tune in to the next episode. We will continue to watch.

I enjoyed it, but I don’t believe this type of story can go on for multiple seasons.

I like it. Nice to see a new take on series Great actors. Looki g forward to series

I haven’t been this hooked on a weekly TV show since Animal Planet aired Finding Bigfoot. I’ve had withdrawals for the past 11 years. Now Finally a movie I can get into. Really get into.

After a disappointing Hallmark Christmas line up of new movies I feel this series may restore my interest.
