What to Expect at Harmony Park Safari in Huntsville

Harmony Park Safari

If you are looking for a new adventure with animal encounters, there is a hidden gem located right here in Huntsville, Alabama. Harmony Park Safari is a mix between a drive through zoo and hands on animal encounters.

Grab your Cash and a Bucket

Once you arrive, you will pull up to a welcome window where you will pay your admission fee and purchase food for the animals. They take cash and check only - no cards. We highly recommend getting a bucket for $5. You will most likely use every bit of it!

Harmony Park Safari

You can also rent an SUV to drive through the park instead of using your personal vehicle, this is a great idea if you are worried about dirt, horns, or hooves accidentally ruining the finish on your transportation.

Harmony Park Safari

Enjoy the Ride

Driving through the park, you will see a variety of animals! Some will be waiting for you, sticking their heads right against the window. We saw lots of “farm animals” like pigs, cows, longhorns, and goats. They also had deer, rams, bison, emus, a giraffe, a camel, and llamas! The park encourages you to stay in the vehicle, keeping the doors locked, but you are able to feed to animals out of your window with the provided cups.

Harmony Park Safari

Side note: trying to feed the animals and take pictures is nearly impossible. We highly suggest putting the phone/camera away and enjoy the moment - otherwise you might feed the phone to a longhorn!

Harmony Park Safari

Feed the Animals

After driving through the Safari, you can then park and take a short walk to the Reptile House , the Pigsty, and the Turtle Enclosure. The Reptile House was full of snakes, alligators, lizards, and more! They have a few species of albino reptiles as well.

Harmony Park Safari

The Pigsty is a large fenced in area with a huge family of pigs. They range from large to absolutely tiny! The park offers free popcorn to toss over the fence, they snort and run as fast as their little legs will carry them to the special treats.

The Turtle Enclosure was by far our favorite part! We purchased some lettuce for $1 to feed the tortoises and they loved it! They were munching the lettuce and following us around the entire pen.

Harmony Park Safari

As someone who isn’t around animals (other than our two dogs) very often, it was a fun experience! Feeding the animals is a little intimidating but at the end of the day the animals were really only worried about the food and were very pleasant. They are wild animals, but you could tell that they were also used to having people in their space which is reassuring. The Harmony Park Safari staff was helpful and had all the tools we needed to have the best experience. The Park is definitely something you should add to your schedule if you are visiting Huntsville! It’s great for kids, families, friends, and couples!

Harmony Park Safari – One of Huntsville’s Best Kept Secrets

April 8, 2016 By Guest Blogger

Harmony Park Safari

People can live for years in the area and not know it exists, even though this hidden gem is a guaranteed adventure for all ages.

[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”44001″]

Harmony Park Safari

Tucked away on its grounds is a kangaroo habitat, a reptile room (with all sorts of creepy crawlies), a tortoise trail, and their drive through zoo.

Guests can purchase an optional bucket of feed to give to the animals in the drive through zoo, which include llamas, bison, zebras, and some very friendly emus.

The feed bucket is expected by most of the animals in the drive through zoo, so if you don’t bring one, expect to receive some condescending looks from the wildlife.

Harmony Park safari bison

Harmony Park Safari is one of Huntsville’s most surprising gems! When entering the park the first thing you do is pull up to the little hut and pay. Make sure you get at least one bucket of food for the animals. The animals know the cars have treats and if you don’t feed them you won’t get very much attention. The attendant will open up a large gate and you are on your own. Almost immediately you will have 5-10 various animals around your car!

harmony park safari huntsville

The speed limit is 5 mph but many times we moved slower than that. We decided to let the kids out of their seat belts so they could see better and toss food out the windows. They ask that you don’t lower your windows more than eight inches and there is a reason for this rule! The animals are very friendly and they aren’t afraid to get up close and personal for a treat. When the animal wanting a treat is their Scottish Highlander, Mr. Wilson, it can get a little intimidating!

Harmony Park Animals 1

About Harmony Park Safari

Harmony Park Safari opened in 1990 with 30 acres of land to house the animals they care for. The park is unique because most of the animals roam freely nibbling treats tossed out from the visitors’ car windows. HPS is a federally licensed nature preserve of free-ranging exotic & endangered animals. Things are constantly improving on the property and the park is always adding new animals. The newest addition is a brand new Reptile Room that is at least twice as big as their old one. Their newest resident is a young giraffe that is now living peacefully in his new south Huntsville home.

Harmony Park reptile

Much of the admission fee goes towards just feeding all of the animals. They use over 8,000 pounds of grain a month to feed them all. The food that they give you is more like candy to the park animals and they don’t get it from anywhere other than the visiting cars so they are really excited for visitors!

Harmony Park Safari Pro-Tips

After you finish your drive don’t leave yet! There are a lot of animals that you can walk around and see (some that need to be more contained) as well as a giraffe and kangaroo. There is also the opportunity to touch and feed some very large turtles! Updated May 2020 – Harmony Park is drive-through only until further notice due to Covid-19.

Harmony Park Turtle

The 2-mile driving trail is laid out in a loop. Once you get in the park you can drive around as long as you like. There is no way my kids would have let us leave after only one go around anyway!

Make sure you buy the animal food. If you don’t buy the food they figure it out quickly and go visit the other cars that are tossing out treats. If you want their attention, you need to buy the food.

Ask for extra cups. My kids accidentally dropped every single little cup they gave us when tossing the food out the window. You can also bring a few from home.

Plan on taking your car through a car wash after your visit. There is no way around it. Between the fingerprints from my kids’ hands on the inside of the car and the animal mouths & noses on the outside, just factor in a car wash when you are thinking about price. On that note, judging from other reviews, I wouldn’t advise taking your brand-new car through the park either. These are big animals and there’s always the risk of minor dings & scratches. If that’s a deal-breaker for you, the park has rental SUV’s you can borrow for $15 to drive through the park.

Editor’s Note: We are aware of the controversy reported both on local news and to us by local parents about Harmony Park. Road Trippin To Harmony Safari Park In Huntsville

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for a fun road trip for the family this summer? Like most parents, I spent every waking minute trying to figure out how to entertain my daughters during the summer.

Harmony Safari Park is fun and educational therefore your kids will not lose all of their brain cells by doing nothing but playing video games, building houses on mind-craft, complaining they are bored every second of the day, or just simply getting on your nerves by fighting all summer.

Harmony Park Safari is a one-of-a-kind attraction for Huntsville. If you want to laugh, scream, get mad at your husband for letting the windows down while an Emu is hunting for food – check out Harmony Park Safari, a federally licensed nature preserve of free-ranging exotic & endangered animals.

The park is a “drive-through” animal park where you are required for your own safety to remain in your car during the two-mile route to see the animals which include; zebras, zebus, antelope, buffalo, a camel, ostriches, pythons & crocodiles.

If you roll down your windows be prepared for the Emu’s because they are quick and those skinny little heads will dart in out of your car window so fast.

Harmony Safari Park In Alabama

Harmony Park Safari is about 30 minutes south of downtown Huntsville, AL, and a 2-hour drive from Nashville.

Once you arrive at Harmony Safari park you will enter the park and come to a small trailer where an attendant will greet you and take your payment which is $10 pp.

The park also provides you the opportunity to purchase food for your drive-thru the park. I suggest purchasing the large bucket because the animals will devour the food pretty quickly.

You can purchase either a large bucket which is $5.00 or the red solo cup of food. We purchased the bucket and still ran out of food before we made it halfway through the park so I suggest purchasing two buckets of food especially if you have kids with you.

The links in this post may be affiliate links.  That means that if you click them and make a purchase, this site makes a commission.  It will have no impact on the price you pay or the experience of your purchase.

While the animals are accustomed to being fed from cars it doesn’t stop you from screaming when they stick their entire heads through the car window.  Be prepared to have at a minimum of 4 to 5 animals surrounding your car at any given time.

Once you get into the actual park make sure you take your time, drive slowly through the park, enjoy the animals, and feed them plenty of treats.   The more treats you have the more animals will surround your car and the more fun the kiddos will have.

Once we got going in the park we decided it was ok for Madison and Camille to get out of their seatbelts and let the windows down to feed the animals.

What kind of animals are at Harmony Safari Park?

I might have nightmares for the rest of my life thinking about those EMUs!  EMUs are for the most part very docile animals and I am sure the EMUs at Harmony are very nice animals, but those little beady eyes and long beaks scared the bejeezus out of me.

They would run-up to the car and stick those scary-looking beaks right through the window! Needless to say, I am good if I never see another EMU.

My daughters loved the Zebra, which came right over to the car like he knew the girls had been waiting to pet him from the moment they laid eyes on him across the park.

How precious are these Llamas?  Look at those eyes and I swear one of them winked at me and my heart melted just a little.  Isn’t he like the sexiest Llama you’ve ever seen?  Ok, this is getting a little creepy but look at those eyelashes!

They even have a giraffe, but you can only see it on the back side of the park and it was in an enclosure.

Petting Zoo

They also have a “petting” zoo that allows you to walk around and touch the animals.  The petting zoo has turtles, baboons, lemurs, alligators, pigs, and birds.  The tortoises are the main attraction in the petting zoo because of how large they are; plus they are roaming around like they are king of the castle.

Watch the video below of how much fun my family had and please share!

They also sell lettuce for the tortoises if you want to feed them, but please be careful when feeding the tortoises because the last thing you want is to be bitten by a tortoise.

Lastly, they have an indoor reptile house with many snakes, lizards, frogs, and bugs; so don’t leave before you check out the reptile house.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

I can’t say this enough but please get insurance no matter the destination! Even if you are only going on a short trip, you should always travel with insurance.

Have fun while visiting exploring the U.S. this summer , but take it from someone who has racked up thousands of bucks on an insurance claim before, you will need it.

Make sure to get your insurance before you head off on an adventure!  I highly recommend  Travelex Insurance.

The Conclusion – Harmony Safari Park

There is no doubt that if you are looking for a fun-filled family trip that will still allow you to practice social distancing gas up and head to Harmony Safari Park.

Huntsville, AL is only a short two-hour drive from Nashville which makes it a great road trip and you won’t even have to worry about killing your family.

While you must remain in your car for this 2-mile route and see zebras, zebus, buffalo, camels, ostriches, pythons, rams, highlanders, alligators, waterfowl, waterfalls, and more it is well worth the road trip to Alabama.

WOW!!! I spent my freshman year at AAMU, and I didn’t know this was there. I will have to check it out the next time we are there to visit my mom.

So much fun! I dont know if you watched the video but the animals are literally in your car

Thanks for this post. I’m always on the lookout for things close to Nashville. I hadn’t heard of this place but I’ll definitely be looking into it.

It’s only about an hour and a half from Nashville so makes for a quick day trip

Omg I love the zoo! And the fact that you could drive through is everything. Great post

I consider myself a world traveler but have never been to Alabama. My kids love animals, so this seems like a perfect place for us to go. Thank you for putting it on my radar.

every summer I focus on places to explore within a 3-hour driving distance. This year I focused on Alabama and there are so many hidden gems in Alabama. They have a big cat sanctuary as well

I love the zoo and they had great animals! I’m sure your girls loved that! I have family Alabama, I will have to make my way to Huntsville at some point!

A safari park in alabama? I had no idea. It’s nice to not have to go all the way to Africa to see such beautiful animals. What a fun experience.

Great Post! We have one of these parks here in Cleveland, we need to schedule a trip! Looks like fun and I know my children would enjoy it. And I have family in Huntsville so the next time we are there I’m going to suggest it!

It was well worth the drive. The kids had such a blast and the EMUS traumatized me

A drive-thru zoo, is definitely my kinda zoo! lol Not used to paying to enter a zoo, that’s new but it looks like a great way to spend the day with he kids.

I have never heard of a drive thru zoo but I like the concept. I love the zoo but it is normally hot and involves alot of walking. I’m with you , that emu would probably give me nightmares as well..

Those EMUS have traumatized me! that thing has no sense of boundaries but I guess I was in his space but Lawd!

This looks like a BLAST! I haven’t been in years! Maybe I’ll take the kiddies! Thank you!

Harmony Park Safari

  • Reading Mode

One of the reasons we started this website was to share discoveries that no one seems to know about. Harmony Park Safari is such a discovery. It's a drive-through safari with goats, deer, zebra, bison, llamas, ponies, emus, wildebeest, zebu, camel, and alligators. The camel and alligators are behind fences but everything else comes right up to your vehicle. Not only are your kids going to love it, but you'll probably have a blast too.

You'll have to sign a waiver before entering and you're required to keep your window at least halfway up though there's no one there to enforce the rule and I'm guilty of leaving my window down most of the time.

Once you exit, pull into the parking lot and visit their new-ish Reptile Room which replaces the old trailer and is at least 2-3x as big. They have a respectable collection of snakes, frogs, turtles, crocodile, etc. They usually have some alligator and turtle hatchlings. Walk into the fenced area and feed the tortoises. These guys are pretty cool and your kids will love feeding them. In fact, for some people this may be better than the safari. There's no supervision to speak of and I've actually picked one up to see how heavy they are (spoiler: very heavy). I made the fortunate mistake of sitting down to feed one only to have another one start to crawl on me to get at my cup of lettuce. Under a certain temperature, they put the tortoises away so make sure it's warm. Or call first but don't expect anyone to answer ;)

For completeness sake, you'll also see a baboon, kangaroos, a macaque, a donkey, geese, and peacocks around the park.

Travel south on the Parkway to Hobbs Island Rd and take a left. After about 8 miles you'll see a big sign announcing the safari. Take a right on Cloud Cove Rd. and the park will be up just a ways on your left. Click here to see it on Google Maps.

The park is open 10:00am - Sunset daily (including weekends) March through November.

Don't bother looking for official information about them online. It doesn't exist. We try to update this article annually.

They used to charge a set amount per car but now it's $7 $8 $9 per person (times are tough I guess). Children under 3 are free. Food buckets are $5 each and lettuce cups are $1 each. Cash only. And apparently no pets allowed.

Don't take your brand new car. The rams and deer have antlers and while they're eating the food off the ground near your car you may get some minor scratches. One particular goat likes to paw at your door too.

Buy lots of food. I usually recommend one bucket per child and more if you plan to get involved. If you buy too much, take a left at the end of the trail and make another loop to get rid of your excess food.

Stay back from other cars. Be sure to leave some distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. For one, you don't want to cause the people in front of you to rush. Second, it's hilarious to watch the herd of animals stampede to your car once they realize their previous food source has driven off and there's nothing left on the ground. Almost simultaneously, they start looking around for another car, see you, and make a beeline to get your treats.

There are no rental cars. You must drive your own vehicle. It was $11.00 per person. Not sure if there is a perfect car price. To my knowledge there is no vehicle rental available.

Harmony Park Safari closes after 30 years

Harmony Park Safari was a mix between a drive through zoo with some hands on animal encounters.

MADISON Co., Ala. ( WAFF ) - The drive-through zoo that was home to many “exotic and endangered” animals has closed after 30 years of operation.

Harmony Park Safari was a mix of a drive-through zoo with some hands-on animal encounters. There were a variety of animals you could see and you could even feed some.

If you call the park’s phone number, the answering machine confirms the park has closed after 30 years. According to a spokesperson for the United States Department of Agriculture, the park still has an active certification.

There was an incident in 2017 at the park when a 9-year-old girl was attacked by a kangaroo. The child had to get 14 stitches in her head because of the attack and a lawsuit was filed.

Harmony Park Safari

Harmony Park Safari has closed after 30 years. (Huntsville Times file photo)

Note: Alabama Safari Park, in Hope Hull, is still open for business.

The Huntsville area’s drive-thru zoo has apparently closed.

Entry is barred to Harmony Park Safari in the New Hope community by ropes, and the park’s website has been deactivated. A Google search for the park says that it is “permanently closed.”

A recorded message on the park’s phone number says, “After 30 years, we will be permanently closing our gates. From this day forward, we are permanently closed. Thanks to all of our patrons from 51 states, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada, too. God bless each and every one, and we hope each of our patrons enjoyed their stay at Harmony Park Safari.”

WHNT attempted, but was unable, to get answers on why the park closed.

Located on Clouds Cove Road Southeast, the attraction was lauded as a “hidden gem” for families and boasted giraffes, zebras, emus, llamas and other animals in an outdoor park setting.

It made news i n 2017 when one of its kangaroos bit a nine-year-old girl’s ear, resulting in 14 stitches. A year later, a n altercation between a visitor and an employee went viral on social media.

Over the years, the park was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for failure to maintain fencing, which resulted in the 2021 death of deer and sheep due to predators, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Other citations dealt with shelter and proper veterinary care.
