Rockville High School Art Teacher Caryn Chavarria Selected as Winner of 2024 Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival Poster Contest

high school visit poster

Caryn Chavarria, a digital art, photography and ceramics teacher at Rockville High School, has been announced as the winner of this year’s Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival poster contest. Per the news release: “The poster for the eighth annual Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival will be based on a design submitted by Caryn Chavarria, a Latina artist and Rockville resident who specializes in painting, digital art and photography. Her design will be used to promote and artfully represent this year’s event, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29, in Downtown Wheaton.

Ms. Chavarria teaches digital art, photography and ceramics at Rockville High School. As the winner of poster contest, she will receive a cash prize of $500 donated jointly by IHOP Wheaton and the Los Chorros Restaurant in Wheaton.

The poster contest was open to all residents of Montgomery County. After Ms. Chavarria’s artwork was selected, she worked with Wheaton Arts Parade designer Josue Martinez of Corinto Gallery to incorporate her artwork into the design for the poster and the event’s T-shirt. It will be featured in all promotional materials leading up to the parade.

The annual Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 29 in the Wheaton Triangle and on the Marian Fryer Plaza, which is adjacent to the entrance of the Wheaton Metro Station. The Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival is a day for residents, artists, businesses and civic organizations to celebrate art and Wheaton’s diverse cultures. The art parade kicks off the day and the community then gathers at a festival of performances, art exhibits and food.

“My design aims to encapsulate the essence of the parade and festival,” said Ms. Chavarria, “which includes an appreciation for arts, music, food and decor. Additionally, through the use of one-line drawings, I wanted to capture the diversity of Wheaton, as well as the community’s interconnectedness. I also wanted to pay homage to the triangular and pyramid motif of Wheaton Arts Parade. The color scheme was chosen to show the vibrancy of the community and of the festival as well as the movement that encapsulates Wheaton.”

As part of the prize, an additional $100 will be donated to Rockville High School for art supplies in Ms. Chavarria’s honor.

“As a life-long resident of Wheaton and local business owner, I appreciate what Wheaton Arts Parade has done to celebrate our community and activate the arts district,” said IHOP owner and prize sponsor William Moore.” I am honored to sponsor the annual poster contest and to reward the creative efforts of local artists like Caryn.”

Los Chorros owner and prize sponsor Omar Lazo said: “The artwork is truly remarkable and captures the vibrant spirit of our community. We are proud to join Wheaton Arts Parade in celebrating the power of art and its ability to bring people together.”

More than 50 festival spaces are available in the 2024 festival for artists to rent to exhibit and sell their original artwork and for arts organizations and community organizations to promote their activities. The day is inspired by the parade and the closure of roads so that people can pull giant floats and show off their art, play music and dance.

Schools and community organizations are encouraged to make floats for the arts parade and artists of all kinds are invited to push, pull, carry, wear or perform their art in the parade. There are no motor vehicles. It is free to enter. Registration is open now for parade participants, art vendors, performers, exhibitors and food vendors. Funds are available for individuals and groups to help in creating their floats and parade art.

To register or learn more about the parade and festival, go to  www.wheatonartsparade.org . More information also is available by emailing  [email protected] .”

Well-Paid Maids Celebrates 7 Years of Paying Living Wages

high school visit poster

Aaron Seyedian launched the home cleaning company Well-Paid Maids in June 2017 and, that August, began offering cleaning services around the D.C. area with his staff of three -- including himself.

At the time, he paid cleaners a living wage of $16 an hour, plus benefits.

Here's what he told The Washington Post in September 2017: "It's just immoral for people to have to panic every time the rent is due, to wonder how they're going to pay for their groceries, or whether they can buy their kid a pair of shoes."

Today, Well-Paid Maids has grown into a team of around 35 employees. Cleaners now get paid a starting wage of $24 an hour. Plus, they get benefits, like health, vision, dental and life insurance; 24 paid days off per year; 100% employer-paid commuting costs; and more.

Aaron and other Well-Paid Maids team members have also advocated for paid family and medical leave, higher minimum wages, and more.

This summer, help Well-Paid Maids celebrate seven years of creating change in a notoriously dirty industry.

Vermont High School Forensics Class Surprised With Terrifying Mock Shooting Demonstration During Police Station Visit

high school visit poster

Is it possible to pull off a citizen’s arrest on a law enforcement officer on account of inducing panic?

Because holy hell, that is for sure what certain members of the Burlington Police Department in Vermont did while recently hosting high school students for a lesson on their premises.

As part of the class, students bore witness to a demonstration of a mock shooting scenario in which a masked gunman entered the room. Only problem was, the impressionable teens — who live in a nation where school shootings haven’t exactly been uncommon — weren’t given a heads up that this was happening. Seven Days reported on the stunning news.

BREAKING: While teaching a class to high school students on Wednesday, Burlington police officers staged a surprise demonstration in which a masked gunman burst into the room and pretended to open fire. The lack of warning sent students diving for cover https://t.co/aSk4i9qMog pic.twitter.com/hUDi95f9oi — Seven Days (@sevendaysvt) June 6, 2024

Burlington PD issued a response to the situation. According to the statement, there was prior correspondence with the school district to coordinate the class. The police department asked if it was OK to run the mock shooting scenario. The school district rep gave the green light, and said parents and students would be forewarned.

There’s blame to go around the school for clearly not giving parents or students a heads up that this scenario was coming. At the same time, the way it was reportedly presented by the police department, the fake shooting was sprung on the students without any indication that the exercise would be the next beat of the lesson plan. The simulation also featured loud gunshots.

Seven Days spoke to a traumatized student who said, “I’m shaking and crying because I’m like, Oh my god, I’m gonna get shot… It felt so real.”

Think about how awkward this must have been: Per the report, students didn’t know the shooting wasn’t real until realizing that the other officers in the room didn’t make any effort to stop the mock shooter.

Not to, like… kick the Burlington Police Department while they’re down, but their police chief, Jon Murad, was just reappointed by the mayor amid impassioned opposition. Part of the reason? Murad once allegedly threatened to arrest a medical doctor who was treating a gunshot wound in the ER. Let’s just say between that, whatever other issues locals have with him, and this mock shooting exercise, it’s a good bet Murad will only face further scrutiny.

All the adults involved in coordinating this class clearly dropped the ball. Bottom line is, simulating a shooting with an actual masked gunman and loud sounds of gunshots in front of any group of students in the year 2024 is tone-deaf any way you slice it.

Transgender teen hospitalized after alleged attack in high school bathroom

A transgender girl was hospitalized and left with a broken jaw after allegedly being attacked by one of her classmates at a Minnesota high school.

Cobalt Sovereign, 17, told NBC affiliate KARE 11 this week that she was assaulted on May 30 by a male student while leaving the men’s bathroom at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, a city about 15 miles west of Minneapolis. Sovereign said she was hospitalized for two days and had to have her jaw repaired.

“I was hit in the jaw and at the time one of my teeth exploded, pieces in my mouth,” Sovereign told KARE 11 . “My jaw was broken in two places.”

Sovereign said that the male student called her homophobic slurs before hitting her.

“In the bathroom, he had looked over the stall directly where I was attempting to use the bathroom, and that is where he initially called me a f----- in the first place,” Sovereign said.

Sovereign said she then got up from the bathroom stall and left to verbally confront him.

“He had no reason to have anything against me, I’ve never talked to him, never done anything negative to him,” Sovereign said. “And I was insulted and then eventually hit in the jaw.”

Sovereign said that Hopkins High School has gender neutral bathrooms, but that she didn’t try to use them on the day of the alleged assault because they are usually occupied or out of the way.

“I would rather be uncomfortable than make other people uncomfortable by using the women’s bathroom,” she said.

The Minnetonka Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Without naming Sovereign, the department told KARE 11 this week that they were investigating an incident at Hopkins High School as a “possible hate crime.”

A spokesperson for Hopkins Public Schools said in an email to NBC News that the school district and police “are investigating an act of violence that occurred last Thursday and involved a student who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.”

“Hopkins Public Schools is an inclusive community that values diversity and inclusion,” the spokesperson wrote. “We will address any issues that compromise the safety and inclusivity of our school environment. We support and stand by any group that is marginalized, including our LGBTQ+ scholars and staff.”

Students, activists and some local lawmakers held a rally outside the school Wednesday to condemn the alleged attack on Sovereign.

Democratic State Rep. Leigh Finke, the first openly trans person elected to the Minnesota Legislature, posted on Instagram a photo of herself at the rally and compared the alleged attack on Sovereign to the death of Oklahoma student Nex Benedict.

Benedict, a 16-year-old transgender student who used he/him and they/them pronouns , according to his friends and family members, died by suicide a day after a fight at Owasso High School in February. Benedict’s death became a rallying cry for LGBTQ activists, who argued that historic numbers of anti-trans legislation have made trans kids less safe at school.

“These attacks are too common, and the actions of institutions responsible for our kids are, consistently, underwhelming, negligent, and dangerous,” Finke wrote on her Instagram . “Cobalt lived. Thank goddess. Nex did not. Please help us make sure there is no next time.”

New biology & chemistry summer camp to help high schoolers study God’s creation

“We have a variety of programs in the natural sciences … and we want to show them to the students before college,” Department Chair Dr. Ben Kalu said. “For high school students who are looking to go into this field, getting proper advising and counseling to point them in the right direction is something that is critical. We want to show them we have expert faculty in these many fields, we have outstanding programs, and we can offer students the opportunity to begin their careers. The department has quite a lot of state-of-the-art equipment throughout, as good as you’ll find pretty much around the world, so we want to show them that too.”

From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, campers will participate in two sessions in which they can try their hand at EKGs to look at heart electrical activity, forensic science with fingerprinting and crime scene assessment, human cadaver dissection, or organic chemistry and microbiology, among other activities. The sessions will be hands-on, under the supervision of Liberty professors and undergraduate and graduate students.

Kalu said a goal for the camp is to show students who come from families with little to no college history that achieving a college education can be done and that the sciences are a fascinating field to pursue.

“Our dean, Dr. Heidi DiFrancesca, is passionate about giving opportunities to members of the community who would be first-generation college attendees, and we want to bridge that gap for those who just don’t know what college is like,” Kalu said. “We want to start that conversation with them and guide them along so they can see that it’s possible.”

Through exploring the sciences, meeting faculty and current students, and using the innovative equipment available to the department, Kalu said campers will be introduced to the way in which Liberty infuses Christ into the scientific world, a world created by God.

“Our department’s goal is to lead people in exploring the invisible attributes of God that are manifested in the things He has created,” Kalu said. “In the natural sciences, we employ the scientific tools and principles of scientific inquiry that you would find at any institutions, but we do that with a biblical worldview, with the understanding that God is the Creator of life. Our engagement in science is an act of worship as we discover things about what God has created and how intricately He has designed us and the rest of the natural world. This camp will give us an opportunity to speak into the lives and minds of these young people, to tell them that they can study science and worship God; there is no dichotomy between the two.”

Registration is open for the Summer Science Camp. For more information, email [email protected] or call (434) 582-2209.

The Summer Science Camp is one of many academic camps that have happened or will happen on Liberty’s campus this summer, including a Nurse Camp earlier this month, Cyber Camp through much of June, the ongoing Uncut Series of performing arts camps, two aviation maintenance camps over the next two weeks, and multiple engineering camps in July. Read more about the camps by visiting Liberty.edu/Summer-Camps .

Jack Black responds to students' request to attend 'School of Rock' musical production

high school visit poster

The students of an Australian high school will have to wait for their lesson with Jack Black .

Students of a Melbourne high school requested the actor's presence during a Ringwood Secondary College production of "School of Rock: The Musical," based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Black.

The students began a campaign after seeing Black, 54, would be in town with his band Tenacious D while the show was in production. The school posted the plea in a viral TikTok last week, asking viewers to get the message to Black.

Black responded in a video shared by the Australian Broadcast Corporation , politely declining due to touring commitments.

"Ringwood Secondary College, are you kidding me? You're doing 'School of Rock'? I love it — so touched," Black said. "And I wish I could come see it, but unfortunately I'm going to be rocking!"

Black noted that it has been two decades since the film came out, and that it is his "favorite movie that I ever did."

He did, however, leave the Australian students with some wise words.

"There's no way you can stop the School of Rock!" he sang.

In the film Black played Dewey Finn, a guitarist who gets fired from his band and, risking getting kicked out of the apartment he shares with roommate Ned Schneebly (Mike White), answers a phone call meant for Schneebly about a position as a substitute teacher. Black impersonates Schneebly and takes the job, later recognizing the students' musical talent and soon entering the students in a Battle of the Bands.

The film also starred Sarah Silverman , Joan Cusack and then-child stars Miranda Cosgrove , Brian Falduto and the late Kevin Clark .

The musical version follows the same plot by White, who wrote the original film, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes.

The musical made its Broadway debut in 2015 and its West End debut in 2016. A North American tour for the musical ran from 2017 to 2019, in addition to tours in Australia, China, the U.K., Japan and other countries.

Black's band Tenacious D is currently on the international Spicy Meatball Tour, playing music from their first three albums: "Tenacious D," "The Pick of Destiny" and "Rize of the Fenix." The comedy rock duo's latest album, "Post-Apocalypto," was released in 2018.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
