Why you should stay in a homestay in Sapa

Staying in a homestay in Sapa is a wonderful experience, offering a unique insight into the world of the locals living in this area. There are different types of homestays ( explained below ), each with its advantages. But they all have one thing in common, it’s a more personal and authentic experience than staying in a hotel.

When you book a typical accommodation in Sapa , such as a hotel or a hostel, you often miss a connection with the local culture. And let this local culture be one of the main reasons why this area is so unique. Besides the famous Sapa rice fields it is the biggest reason for people to travel to this region. So don’t miss out on it!

Different types of homestays in Sapa

A homestay in vietnam originally meant staying at the home of a local Vietnamese. You rent a room like you would do in a hotel, only with a lot more authentic and personal touch. You can directly communicate with the locals and some even host shared dinner. Over the years, the term homestay got more widly uses as a marketing term. Now a homestay could be anything from a basic stay at some once home to something that looks more like a small hotel. They are all small-scale accommodation, but not all of them offer a closer look into the local culture.

Most homestays in Sapa a luckily true to the name. You stay overnight in a home of locals to experience their culture. A lot of these homestays are owned by ethnic minorities and very basic. It gives you the most authentic experience and a amazing look into their unique culture. It is not for every one, because the house and facilities offer almost no comfort. But if you can, at least stay here for one night. During a multiple day trekking in Sapa you often stay overnight in these kind of homestays.

These homestays are also located in and around the villages of Sapa . The biggest benefits is that you can still enjoy the local feeling, only with modern day comforts. Thing about an AC in your room, private bathroom, comfortable bed with mattress and sometimes a small restaurant onside so you can pick your own food, instead of eating with the family.

REAL SAPA is social enterprise, 100% owned by locals. We are a group of Black H’mong cousins living in a mountain valley in northern Vietnam. We grow watermelons, oranges, dragonfruit and bananas on a five-hectare orchard about 37 kilometers from Sapa. Tourism to our area is providing us with new opportunities to earn sustainable salary. With that income, we can help our families and our communities. Contact me any time if you want to know more.

TripAdvisor

Many years of experience

We have worked as tour guides in the Sapa area for many years. In 2014 we started working together under the name of Real Sapa 🙂

We speak English well

We speak English, Vietnamese and our local languages.

Quiet walking trails

Many Sapa guides offer walking tours near Sapa town. But we take guests up to 60 kilometers away from the town to places that most tourists never see. We also give tours on our fruit orchard.

100% ethnic owned

Almost all businesses in the Sapa area are owned by Vietnamese, but Real Sapa is 100% ethnic-minority owned. We invest our profits into our orchard and we give money to poor people in our community.

What are Sapa homestays actually like?

Fruit Sapa homestay

We absolutely loved our time exploring amazing Sapa homestays. This really is a unique way to immerse yourself in rural life and experience H’mong culture. Sapa homestays are beautiful but a little basic. If you’re looking for stunning scenery, peace and tranquility, Sapa homestays deliver. However, if you’re looking for high levels of comfort, convenience and luxury we recommend that you consider some of the 5 star hotels in Sapa or Hanoi.

Some Challenges of a Sapa homestay

the backpacking family trekking in Sapa

Here are some of the challenges you may experience in a Sapa homestay:

  • Language barrier: You may need to be creative and patient in the way you communicate. Many of the locals in Sapa don’t speak English. They are however very accustomed to a language barrier and most hosts can tune into your needs quickly.
  • Cold weather: Sapa is a mountain climate and it can get cold – especially in winter. Some of these homestays can get a bit chilly. We recommend bringing some extra layers and speak to your host if you need more bedding.
  • Power outages: Another challenge that you might face in Sapa is power cuts (especially in bad weather)
  • Rough roads: One of the big challenges of getting to your Sapa homestay is the road quality (or lack thereof). Some of the roads leading to the villages around Sapa are unpaved and rocky. At times you can get small localized floods. Also be aware that some of the roads are very steep.
  • Small range of food: Another thing you are likely to experience at your homestay is a limited range of food. Homestays may offer an extensive menu but only have certain items available at any given time. This depends on what they can get at the market and what they have in stock.
  • Limited local products: You may also find it challenging to get certain products locally.
  • Limited connectivity: Wifi and mobile signal can also be limited. Some homestays may offer reasonable wifi but we don’t recommend relying on this. Mobile signal can also be very weak too.

Hopefully you’re not put off? Many of the challenges can actually be seen as a positive part of the homestay experience. So our advice? Disconnect from screens, reconnect with nature, slow down and absorb the experience.

What things do Sapa homestays normally include?

Cat cat village homestay sapa

A good Sapa homestay should include a private room with ensuite bathroom, breakfast, hot shower, free Wi-Fi (although this is variable) and help arranging transport and booking tours. Some homestays may also include things like an outdoor swimming pool, motorbike rental, cooking experiences and opportunities to learn about local life and culture.

How do you get to the homestays around Sapa?

Getting around in Sapa central square

The first challenge is getting to Sapa. There are four ways to travel from Hanoi to Sapa . You can take a bus, a limo van, a sleeper train to Sapa OR rent a car and drive.

Most of the homestays that we recommend in this article are located within 15km of Sapa town. The drive normally takes around 30 minutes or more due to hills and the road conditions.

The most common way to access home stays from sapa is to use local taxis. This can be challenging because there are no taxi apps available in this region. So you cannot use Gojek to request a taxi. Taxi drivers may try to charge more due to the touristy nature of the area.

In order to get to your home stay from Sapa you will need to go old school and flag a taxi at the side of the road. You will need to show them where you are going and agree on a price. They are unlikely to go on the taxi meter for long journeys.  The price is likely to range between  200,000VND to 300,000VND depending on the distance. Some homestays can also organize a taxi service for you.

Your host will probably need to help you organize your return taxi back to sapa. Homestay hosts and taxi drivers are familiar with doing this so don’t worry if it is not organized beforehand.

What is the food like in Sapa homestays?

North vietnam Sapa food cat cat village

Local food in this region is not very spicy. onions, ginger and garlic are commonly used to flavor foods. Some very common dishes include Vietnamese hot pot which is served with noodles, egg, tofu and sometimes meat. BBQ food is also common in this area including barbecued sticky rice and BBQ meat. You can also find interesting foods such as a water buffalo, beef jerky and Pho soup is a very common dish. Vietnamese drip coffee, beer, soft drinks and rice wine are all common in this area.

Water buffalo and ginger

Most Sapa homestays have a menu and offer food throughout the day. Many homestays will include breakfast with your room, and some may also include lunch or dinner. Make sure that you check exactly what is included when you book. In our opinion the food menus at Sapa homestays can be quite expensive and fairly basic.

pho soup Hanoi

Sapa homestays may have extensive menus, BUT they are only normally able to offer a limited range of dishes. This normally depends on what they have in stock and what is available at the market. You may also find it challenging to buy certain products locally, there are small shops around however the stock can be limited and variable. Therefore we recommend planning to bring any snacks that you may need with you.

TOP TIP: The rural food is not great if you have special dietary requirements. We recommend planning snacks, supplements and supplies as needed.

Top tips for making the most of your Sapa homestay

vietnam accommodation

  • Contact your host to confirm check in times and swap numbers
  • Bring several warm layers and waterproofs
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes (ideally waterproof)
  • Bring swimming stuff (if your homestay has a pool)
  • Bring any snacks you will need (or want!)
  • Bring plenty of money (the only ATM machines are in Sapa town)
  • Download google translate and save the Vietnamese language offline
  • Download maps.me and make sure you have the Sapa region available offline
  • Let friends and family know that you may be out of signal for a while
  • Pack a good book and prepare to chill out
  • Most homestays provide toilet paper but it may be worth having some spare!

This no-thrills property is affordable, simple and immersed in beautiful gardens and farmland. We absolutely loved our stay here. It genuinely feels like a retreat. Sapa Plum Homestay doesn’t have any wifi. The property is very simple with a garden and small area to make drinks.

Childcentred learning worldschooling

Surrounded by lush farmland and rolling hills, this really is a dreamy place to stay if you’re attracted to a simple and beautiful stay. Rooms at the Sapa Plum Homestay have bathtubs and private bathrooms. The main downside of Sapa Plum? The closest food is in town which is around 10 – 15 minutes walk. You may find it helpful to stock up on snacks and noodles.  There is no kitchen, menu or food available at this homestay.

Plum house homestay sapa

Also we mentioned that there is not any wifi at Sapa Plum homestay. Mobile signal can be limited here too. This is a great place to disconnect from tech and reconnect with nature.

Rooms typically range between £10 – £20 per night here. Overall this is pretty good value for money.

2 Sapa Tatu Homestay (Sapa town)

Sapa Tatu homestay

This lovely little homestay provides picturesque, affordable and comfortable accommodation and an excellent location in Sapa town. The hostess is super lovely and cooks amazing food – the portions are generous and delicious (dinner costs around 120,000VND).

It is around 10 minutes from the lake by walking. The Sapa Tatu homestay is surrounded by lush gardens and they also offer amazing fresh local mountain food. Breakfast is included with rooms (always check when you book). Not bad for one of the cheapest places to stay in Sapa.

Sapa Tatu homestay

Rooms are cozy and comfortable even in colder weather. Hot water can be a little limited at times – but you should still be able to get a hot shower. We would encourage you to book early as this really is one of the BEST budget options around.  They also have a quadruple room – great for families on a budget!

Rooms generally range between £10 – £20 at this homestay.

3 Homestay 715 (Sapa town)

Homestay 715 2

Homestay 715 is another brilliant option at the budget end. It is situated on a hill on the west side of Sapa town (around 15 minutes walk from the lake and around 10 minutes from Sapa Central square). The hostess Lily is very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We love the flexibility at this homestay – whether you’re needing a late arrival or help booking a tour – they will do what they can to help.

Homestay 715 1

This marvelous homestay offers a unique combination of stunning mountain views AND a good location in Sapa town. There is a rooftop terrace with stunning views – and the rooms are also very comfortable and offer epic views too. They even offer a quadruple room (ensuite bathroom) – which makes this a great option for families. Homestay 715 includes a great breakfast too – but as ever double check this when you book.

Rooms range between £15 – £30 at this homestay

4 Mintu Home (Sapa town)

Mintu homestay in Sapa town

This stunning homestay is located at the south of Sapa town (around 2km from the town centre). So this isn’t the best option if you want to be in the centre of Sapa. However, this homestay is in a remarkable location overlooking the stunning Lao Chai valley with great views of Fanispan and the surrounding mountains. The walk to town is around 20 – 30 minutes and there are also plenty of taxis around too. This is a great location for starting treks and exploring Cat Cat village.

Mintu homestay in Sapa town 1

Ling and her family run this homestay with a generous and warm attitude. Rooms include a very good breakfast with a choice of Vietnamese and western food. Portions are generous and the food is fresh and tasty. Rooms are around £20. We strongly recommend reserving a room with a mountain view (these rooms are slightly more expensive but we reckon that it’s worth it!)

5 Stone Paradise Homestay (Cat Cat village)

stone paradise sapa homestay

This is a beautiful homestay located in Cat Cat Village. This is a H’mong ethnic village located a few kilometers to the west of Sapa (down the hill). The Stone Paradise homestay offers a range of rooms to accommodate different sized groups. This beautiful homestay is set amongst stunning surroundings. The host is very friendly and welcoming and they offer breakfast, dinner, craft, hiking tours and motorbike rental. They can also help you arrange a taxi.

stone paradise sapa homestay

The Stone Paradise Homestay is one of the more expensive options in the Sapa area. The high price reflects the touristy area (don’t be put off – it is genuinely very beautiful). Rooms range in price from £20 – £70 per night.

TOP TIP: If you are staying in Cat Cat village you will also need to pay for an entrance permit (only one needed for your whole stay). It costs 700,000VND per person.

6 ChienDe Homestay (Cat Cat Village)

ChienDe 1

ChienDe Homestay is a beautiful and simple homestay located in the Cat Cat village. Chien and his family are very welcoming and greet guests with warm Vietnamese hospitality. They can offer treks around the area (and the prices are generally cheaper than booking through tour operators). ChienDe is located amongst beautiful farmland with water buffalo and rice paddies.

We love the bright vibrant tribal designs in this homestay. Rooms generally range in price between £20 – £40 for this homestay. This is more expensive than average – a reflection of the touristy nature of Cat Cat village. Overall, we do still think this lovely place is worth a stay.

7 Sapa Big Tree Hmong Homestay (Lao Chai village)

Big Tree 3

Sapa Big Tree homestay is a great option if you want to experience the best of Vietnamese hospitality immersed in stunning surroundings. This homestay is beautiful, small and simple. It is on the low end of the budget range and offers an authentic local experience.

Chapa Farmstay is a stylish and comfortable homestay located in the Lao Chai Village area. This lovely homestay is located a few kilometers from the main road and offers a secluded sanctuary for unwinding.

This is one of the more up-market homestay options around Sapa. We love the warm wooden design of this property.

chapa farmstay luxury homestay Sapa

Rooms are spacious, comfortable and offer excellent views of the beautiful valley. The family bungalow is very impressive – offering space, privacy and comfort. If a homestay can be luxurious – this is probably it. The food at Chapa Farmstay is excellent – tasty, fresh and healthy.

9 Amica House (Ta Van)

Amica 3 beautiful sapa homestay

Amica House in Ta Van is genuinely superlative. This is one of the most impressive homestays in the Sapa area. This lovely homestay overlooks rice paddies, giving you the sense that you are suspended in the air.

We are very impressed with the family room. This impressive suite can sleep up to 4 people (two large double beds). It also has a balcony for relaxing to amazing views. We love the cozy wooden rooms with large windows with panoramic mountain views. You can enjoy gazing at stunning mountains and paddies as you lay in bed.

La Beauté is a gorgeous property immersed in lush green farmland. We love the use of outdoor spaces at this homestay. Rooms are also cozy with wooden interiors and artistic tribal textiles. There is an excellent menu at La Beauté and the food is very good here.

la beaute 2

We do recommend checking whether breakfast is included with your booking.

The staff at La Beauté are very helpful. They speak good English and can help you arrange transport and book treks. This homestay is also located close to the main road allowing convenient transportation to Sapa and other attractions in the area.

la beaute 3

This homestay is great value for money. Rooms are generally between £10 – £20 per night.

14 Sau Meo Homestay (Su Pan village)

Sau meo swimming pool homestay

Sau Meo is a charming family run homestay located on a small village road in Su Pan village. There is a small outdoor swimming pool with stunning views over the valley. Sau Meo is surrounded by lush farmland and rice paddies. Rooms are small, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated with wooden interiors. Get ready to run in for a hot shower after a swim.

sau meo homestay near Sapa

Sau Meo include breakfast with your room. There is a choice of fried rice, noodle soup and pancakes. The pancakes are very tasty! For other meals there is a menu of simple food – in our opinion the food is expensive for what you get. We weren’t impressed with the quality of food here – but the location and swimming pool are stunning. There are a couple of small local shops nearby but nowhere else to buy food. Rooms generally range in price from £10 – £20 per night.

15 Pavi Home (Su Pan Village)

pavi 2 homestay sapa

This unique and stylish homestay is located in the remote Su Pan village. We love muji-style interior design, with light pastel plastered walls and large windows for natural light. Rooms are comfortable and cozy. This homestay also displays beautiful artwork produced by a local artist.

pavi 3 homestay sapa

The main disadvantage of Pavi home is the distance from Sapa. £25 – £45 per night.

In the hilly terrain of Ha Giang, using an automatic bike is less safe and environmentally friendly than opting for a semi-automatic or manual bike. The roads here are full of ups and downs, making it challenging for automatic bikes to handle the uneven surfaces, often resulting in breakdowns. Another safety issue is the lack of gears in automatic bikes, preventing them from engine braking effectively. In this post, we will learn how to drive a semi-automatic scooter so you can be confident to do the loop with Mama's homestay:  How to drive a semi-automatic scooter effectively (mamashomestay.com)

At All Japan Tours, we believe one of the best ways to learn and adapt to local customs is none other than staying with a welcoming Japanese family. Many international companies spend a fortune on educating staff members on increasing service value and hospitality through customer service, an area where Japan is second to none. Traditional homestays allow you to experience Japanese hospitality at its very best while learning the traditions of the country from a local’s point of view. It is the perfect way to broaden one’s international views and learn respect for different customs. Minshuku are family-operated, Japanese-style home accommodations. They are typically located in countryside cities, mountainous areas, or outside of tourist spots. For this reason, many homestay visitors have the opportunity to experience farming, net fishing, logging, and hand picking fresh produce. This is a great way to experience a traditional Japanese lifestyle, as well as to learn to appreciate many things we take for granted in the big city. Japanese homestays are seeing increasing popularity because they allow travelers to acquire and develop better conversational skills through various activities, such as learning how to play Japanese board games with the hosts or creating traditional art (ex. origami, ikebana). Enjoy homemade Japanese meals and learn the importance of Japanese table etiquette, an important experience that you will take with you wherever you are dining in Japan. Host families are usually enthused to show you their city and its attractions, so be prepared for activity-filled days and embrace your first-hand experience of Japanese culture. Many travelers after a Japanese homestay experience report learning emphasized respect for their elders, how to bow, eco-friendly practices, and an increase in Japanese vocabulary of course. Once you have stayed at a minshuku, you are guaranteed to apply these new experiences in the future, as well as gain a different outlook on life. This unique journey off the beaten path of Japan ensures both an educational and unforgettable life experience for the privileged student groups.

I hired All Japan Tours to organize the art tour which I curated. We worked on it for two years as this was a complicated trip with a lot of different locations, strict schedule, private viewing, and everything had to be on the highest level of hotels and food. The job that Kiyoshi and his team have done is exceptional. It was so well organized that everything was on time. They are flexible, detail oriented, and lovely to work with.

If you want one of the best tours of your life go with All Japan Tours and ask for Miss Kim. We went for our honeymoon and Miss Kim made it unforgettable. We experienced more than we could have imagined and she was exceptionally helpful and informative. Japan is the most beautiful place we have seen in our lives, and when we got home we missed both the country and Miss Kim. Thank you for all that you have done. We hope to come back again! You really made our honeymoon memorable.

The guide and bus driver were exceptional.

Everything about the tour was amazing! Our guide Miharu was a very big part of making the tour so fantastic. Her knowledge, guidance, assistance, storytelling, friendliness -- I can go on and on, and especially her humor and comedic skills had us all laughing and wanting more. She never failed to have an answer to our questions. Driver Harada-san was also so accommodating and pleasant to have as our driver -- he had the softest hands! I loved all the "hand on" activities - doing bonsai, woodcarving, making kamaboko, making tatami, dancing. It was also so special that Miharu was able to have the beautiful Japanese singer fly in just to entertain us on the bus. That was so special and I'm sure something that is not done for all tours.

Ms. Kawaguchi

Our tour was carefully curated to meet the diverse interests of our group. We had a group of family and friends, many who have traveled to Japan together several times before with a different company. AJT was by far superior in the sites and experiences they provided. The local tour guide was informative and funny and took the extra steps to make sure our tour would be memorable. We will definitely use AJT for our next trip. Thank you

At 10:30 AM approximately, you will be boarding the motor boat and cruise to Amantani Island, through the highest navigable lake in the world – Lake Titicaca. At 01:30 AM approximately we will be reaching Amantani island. Upon arrival, the locals there will meet you and escort to one of their homes on the island, where you will be spending the night. Once you settle in to your private room, they will offer you an islands typical food for lunch (with options for vegans). In the afternoon, you will be spending some time with the family, interacting with them and taking part in intercultural activities and games. You can also do an hour’s hike (uphill) to the temple of Pachamama and Pachatata from where you would get breathtaking views of the sun setting over the world’s highest navigable lake. Dinner will be served at around 7 PM at the local house. In the evening you can join in group performances with dances and music. Overnight on the island.

Walking tour series of historic Pleasant Grove structures kicking off Monday

By laura giles - special to the daily herald | may 6, 2024.

homestay travel tour

Strolling around the quaint streets of Pleasant Grove, enjoying spring and summer weather and learning about the city’s historic homes and buildings: That’s what the Pleasant Grove Historic Preservation Commission’s Walking Tour Series is all about, and this year’s series begins Monday.

“If you attended one of our three tours last summer, you know that this is a great event! We feature one historic street a month with interior and exterior tours of its buildings. The tour also includes a walking tour booklet and refreshments,” reads a post on the commission’s Facebook page .

According to Laurel Cunningham, commission chairperson, the walking tour series first began in 2019, but it was not held again the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series started up again last summer.

“We wanted to bring awareness to Pleasant Grove’s built history and the great stories that go along with the oldest homes in town,” Cunningham said. “We believe the Baba Dioum quote, ‘In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.'” Dioum is a forestry engineer in Senegal.

Last year’s walking tours had a great turnout, according to Cunningham. About 300 people participated across the three tours that were hosted.

The first tour of this series will be held at 6 p.m. Monday. This tour will feature the commercial buildings and homes of historic Main Street. Main Street is part of the city’s historic downtown area. Those wanting to participate should meet at the northwest corner of Downtown Park, 100 S. Main St., to join the guided tour.

On July 15, the series continues with a tour of Center Street, above 100 East. On Aug. 26, the tour will include homes on 200 East, near 200 South.

Those taking the tour will learn about the people who built, worked and lived in the buildings as well as the buildings themselves. The tours are free and do not require tickets. A newly researched, 100-page walking tour book will be available for $10.

Pleasant Grove, like other Utah communities, has many historic buildings that ignite curiosity. The Walking Tour Series aims to satisfy some of the curiosity surrounding the history of the many buildings.

Recently, Cunningham and the commission received an award for rehabilitation and restoration from Preservation Utah in this year’s Community Stewardship Awards. The award was given for the restoration of the National Register-listed Old Town Hall, located at 105 S. 100 East. The historic building was transformed from a deteriorated state to a vibrant community space, according to a Preservation Utah post on Facebook.

For more information about the city’s history or the Walking Tour Series, check out the Pleasant Grove Historic Preservation Commission’s Facebook page.

Hard hat tours to give a glimpse of reimagined IMS museum a year ahead of its reopening

homestay travel tour

By Dominik Wilde May 6, 2024 12:05 PM

By Dominik Wilde | May 6, 2024 12:05 PM ET

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum might be undergoing a transformation right now, but you can still take a look inside thanks to a series of newly-announced “hard hat tours” which are taking place throughout the Month of May.

Beginning this Friday, May 10, guided tours of the main floor and the newly-constructed Mezzanine level (pictured above) of the museum will be offered to mark the one-year countdown until the reimagined museum opens its doors once again.

Members of the IMS Museum leadership team will lead the tours, which will also be taking place on Friday May 17, and Friday May 24, with museum president Joe Hale and vice president of curation and education Jason Vansickle also available by request.

The tours will allow visitors to learn more about the museum’s main floor and its new Mezzanine level, as well as all of the artifacts and exhibits – comprising over 55,000 items and 300 vehicles – that will occupy these spaces once it reopens next year.

With the museum currently an active construction site, guests will need to wear closed-toed shoes, while a safety vest, protective eyewear, and of course the aforementioned hard hat will be provided.
