Travel mugs are reusable mugs that allow you to make your favorite hot beverages at home and easily take them with you on-the-go. While travel mugs can both save you money and help reduce coffee cup waste, the materials they’re made of can be a bit tricky to clean. To remove residue and keep your travel mug sanitized, you can soak and scrub the mug parts with a dish soap solution or wash it with a baking soda and vinegar solution. To keep your travel mug clean between hand washes, you can rinse it after each use, do a quick vinegar soak, or run it through the dishwasher.

Using a Dish Soap Solution

• In some cases, the rubber seal is permanently attached to the mug’s lid. If this is the case, leave the lid as is.
• Dish soap is gentle on travel mug materials and won’t deteriorate the rubber seal. Since most travel mugs are made from stainless steel, dish soap will easily clean the stains up.
• Avoid using any chlorine-based cleaning products, as these can start to break down the rubber seal.

• Giving them time to soak will help soften and loosen any residue or germs.
• Make sure that the toothbrush or bottle brush is clean and sanitized before using it to scrub your travel mug.

• If your travel mug lid has a drink opening, open and close the top to make sure the you wash off all the soap.

• Replacing the lid before the mug is dry can trap moisture inside, which will allow bacteria to grow.
• If you want to use your mug right after cleaning it, you can dry it with a clean paper towel or microfiber cloth. [7] X Research source
• Repeat this process after every use if possible, or at least every other use.
• If there are still stains remaining, add equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Let it sit in the mug for about 15 minutes before rinsing and wiping it clean.

Sanitizing with Baking Soda and Vinegar

• If your mug has a drinking spout and you want to ensure it gets sanitized, you can leave the spout open and cover it tightly with your thumb while you shake. [12] X Research source

• If the mug lid has a drinking opening, rinse it in both the open and closed positions to make sure you wash the dish soap out of the crevices. [14] X Research source

• If possible, sanitize your travel mug after every use, or at least every other use.

Keeping Travel Mugs Clean Between Hand Washes

• Allowing the bacteria to fester will not only make your mug harder to clean, it can also make you sick. Therefore, it’s important to rinse your mug after every use. [17] X Research source

• Many travel mugs have a rubber seal made of polypropylene, which has a high tolerance for heat. Therefore, these can generally withstand the heat of the dishwasher. To be on the safe side, however, it’s best to place it on the top rack since the top gets less hot than the bottom. [20] X Research source
• Even if your travel mug is dishwasher safe, the high heat will likely start to deteriorate the rubber seal over time. Therefore, only run your travel mug through the dishwasher about once per week, and stop putting it in the dishwasher if the mug starts to leak.

How To Remove Stains From Bamboo Cups

If you’re a coffee or tea drinker , you need to know this natural way to clear tea stains from your cups and mugs. Here’s how to do it quickly without using any harsh chemicals! You don’t need to worry anymore because we have the right tips on how to remove stains from bamboo cups.

Here’s a quick guide on how to remove coffee stains from mugs and cups — and it includes using items you may already have lying around your kitchen.

Lemons are not just for baking and cold drinks — they can be used to disinfect a wide variety of household surfaces. The acidity of the lemons slices through tough stains and grease, leaving behind a wonderful scent. And believe it or not, there’s only one lemon that might be enough to clean all your mugs and cups.

Break the fresh lemon into quarters and spill a little juice over the stained region of the cup. Please make sure the whole stain is in contact with the juice, and give it about 15 minutes of contact time. Take the dampened microfibre cloth and fry the lemon juice in the coffee stains. When you’re satisfied that the stains are gone, rinse out a cup of cold water.

Repeat the procedure if you are not pleased with the outcome, and add a little salt to the cup if the stains are especially stubborn.

It could come as a surprise to you to discover that regular table salt might be enough to finally get rid of the gross coffee stains that have been blighting your cups for so long. Salt serves as an effective scouring agent that ‘scrapes’ stains away from you.

To clean your coffee-stained mugs with salt, the first thing you need to do is wet the inside of them with cool, warm water. Sprinkle the salt freely in the mug, ensuring that all the stained areas are sealed. Use a moist cloth of microfibre to massage the salt into the stains. Working in tiny, circular motions is likely to yield the best performance.

When you’re satisfied that the stains have been lifted, rinse out a cup of cold water. If you are still not satisfied with the outcome, repeat the procedure from the start.

Like lemon juice, white vinegar is an acid that can quickly cut through coffee stains. However, this approach includes the use of your microwave.

Heat the white vinegar bowl in your microwave for about 60 seconds. Wearing rubber gloves and oven mitts over the top, pour the hot vinegar into your stained coffee cups — and let it soak for three hours.

Remove the vinegar and rinse each cup with clean water. You can see the stains wash away, but give them a microfibre cloth wipe to aid them on their way.

Baking Soda

If you’ve got some baking soda in your kitchen at all times, there’s almost nothing you can’t clean naturally and efficiently. This versatile ingredient is not only for baking, but it’s also perfect for removing coffee stains from cups and mugs.

Start by sprinkling some soda over the stains. Add a little water to make a paste and spread it out so that all the stains are hidden. Give the paste about 30 minutes of contact time, then rub the paste into the stains with a microfibre cloth. Rinse the cup to remove any residues and, if required, repeat the procedure.

You don’t need to buy costly cleaning chemicals to remove those unsightly stains from your coffee cups — natural ingredients and some elbow grease should do the trick.

Using Bamboo Cups

Every year, we go through 500 billion disposable cups of coffee. They are intended to be used for the length of a drink and then thrown away. But there isn’t any ‘gone.’ Coffee cups can not be recycled or decomposed. They end up in landfills or in the atmosphere where it takes between 500 and 1000 years to break down into smaller and smaller pieces, all while damaging nature, animals and, eventually, us.

With that in mind, it’s reasonable that we need to start dreaming about a sustainable way to fix our everyday coffee.

Luckily, there’s bamboo.

Bamboo is the best plastic substitute we can think of. It grows very quickly (some species grow up to 1 meter every day), and since it is a plant, not a tree, it does not die when it is cut down. There is no need for pesticides or chemical fertilizers to grow, which means that most bamboo products are naturally organic.

Bamboo fibers are solid, durable, but lightweight and extremely versatile. They could be turned into almost something, also in perfect, durable cups of coffee.

What Are The Advantages Of A Bamboo Cup?

You can use the cup again and again. It could last for years if you take good care of it. The Best Way

All it takes is some baking soda. Sprinkle a little baking soda onto the bottom of your stained cup or carafe, add just enough water to form a paste, and scrub. The gentle abrasion of the baking soda will get rid of stains in a matter of minutes. Then, simply rinse and wash the way you usually would.

This method was especially successful for the stains, which no amount of elbow grease or vinegar soaks seemed to budge. If you’ve started to notice a brown residue on your coffee mugs and carafes, try adding an occasional baking soda scrub to your cleaning rotation. It’s quite simple, and it works!

How To Clean A Travel Mug And Get Rid Of That Stench

If your cabinets are overflowing with cups, you're not alone. But let's get real: eventually, you'll have to throw some of that stuff away. Travel mugs are designed to help reduce waste, so before you head for the bin, let's start by trying to clean them. This way, you can give away the mug for someone else to use. 

The strange odor that you smell in your travel mug — despite the lack of presence from stains or otherwise – is from mold. Not cleaning your travel mug regularly can result in a buildup of mold in the insulation of the cup. To prevent the smell from appearing in the first place, make sure to read the instructions for your travel mug before you start using it. It's also a good idea to help your travel mug last longer by having a small rotation of travel cups so you are not overusing one and rushing the cleaning process. 

If it's too late, we get it, and we're here to help. To get rid of that mold smell, you'll need to clean the mug thoroughly.

What tools you will need

There are a few different materials that are good for getting stubborn smells out of travel mugs. To start, you'll need a simple sponge. Make sure it's clean. Additionally, you should invest in a few other scrubbers and cleaning utensils so you can get into every little crevice of your mug. Tiny brushes might be necessary if your mug has a detachable straw or a small lid. Next, you'll need to have some dish soap on hand. Lastly — to be extra diligent with your cleaning — get some distilled white vinegar and baking soda ready, too.

While you might usually clean your dishes in the dishwasher, most travel mugs are crafted with unique materials, meaning they are one of  the many things you should not put through the dishwasher . If you disregard that warning and use the machine anyway, the harsh cleaning process of the dishwasher might warp the material of your mug. If this happens, suds and water can seep into the crevices of your travel cup, creating mold that starts growing where you can't see it. Stick with soap and a little elbow grease.

Start by taking apart the cup

Step one of cleaning all of the bad smells out of your travel mug will be taking the cup apart. To make sure you're getting every part of the travel mug clean, you'll need to give every little part of the cup special attention.

To start this cleaning process, find every removable piece of your mug and separate them from the main drinking vessel. Every travel mug is built differently, so you'll need to inspect the mug thoroughly to find all of those pieces. Some mugs have reusable straws, and others have rubber rings under the lid. Unscrew the cap and flip open any closed hatches.

Once you've detached every piece, lay all of them out on your counter. Make sure to take stock of what pieces you have so you don't lose them in your sink while scrubbing. Taking a photo of all the pieces while they're laid out might be a good idea. Once you're ready, it's time to clean.

Then, scrub down the entire thing

Now that you've found and documented all of the pieces of your travel cup, it's time to scrub down each and every one. Grab your dish soap and a clean sponge to get started. Now, gently scrub down all parts of your cup with dish soap and warm water. Using the smaller scrubbers is essential to get rid of any hidden smells, so make sure a cleaning tool is touching the entire surface of every little piece.

After you're done scrubbing, let the cup dry completely on a drying rack. You can also use a microfiber cloth to dry the cup. Repeat this process a few times a month or more if you are using the cup daily.

If you've scrubbed all that you can and the smell is still lingering, not all hope is lost. Now is the time for you to use your vinegar and baking soda.

Lastly, soak everything in vinegar and baking soda

If you tried using the classic soap and water trick and the smell is still there, don't worry. There are many different ways to clean, and another popular one is to use vinegar. Vinegar has a lot of unexpected uses , and one of them is a great natural cleaning solution.

Try soaking the cup in a mixture of two tablespoons of white distilled vinegar and warm water. If you really need the extra elbow grease, add a dash of baking soda to the mix, too. You'll only need about a teaspoon to reap the benefits. Let this mixture sit for about twenty minutes, then scrub it down to release any stubborn smells. Now, rinse the cup with warm water and let it dry on the drying rack.

This process kills excess germs that have been hanging around on your cup. Again, if the stench still isn't gone after you've cleaned the mug, don't risk getting sick. You can always buy a new cup.

What causes mold to grow in the lid?

Mold thrives in dark, damp places—just like that hidden crease between your lid and the removable seal that rarely (if ever) sees the sunlight. And if you never take the seal off when you're washing your tumbler, moisture gets trapped inside, making it the perfect environment for mold spores to grow.

"Dirt/mold is gross (and obviously everyone should be keeping things clean) but unless you have a compromised immune system or literally never clean out your bottle, you're probably also not going to get sick from it," our Kitchen & Cooking Editor Cassidy Olsen says. "Stay on top of things, sure, but there's no need to panic."

Here's how to clean your travel tumbler

So fresh, so clean.

Because no one wants their coffee with a side of mold, we asked Olsen to share her top tips for washing out a travel tumbler. "I think being lazy and leaving those bits on is what leads to mold growth," she warns. Below is her simple four-step process for keeping your cups clean.

1. Take the whole thing apart.

Break your tumbler down into as many pieces as possible before you start washing. That includes disassembling any rubber seals and exterior protection as well.

2. Use warm water and dish soap.

Always use hot, soapy water to clean. While some people may use cold water in an attempt to save money, warm water actually makes dish detergent more effective at cutting through oil, bacteria, and, yes, mold.

3. Get into hard-to-reach places.

A haphazard swipe around the inside of your cup isn't going to get the job done. You'll need to thoroughly clean out every nook and cranny of the different parts, which Olsen recommends using pipe cleaners or Q-tips to tackle.

4. Dry all of the pieces thoroughly before you reassemble it.

You could have the most sparkling clean tumbler imaginable... but if you don't dry the parts before putting it back together, you'll end up with a moldy mess in no time. Let the pieces dry completely overnight or thoroughly towel-dry them, making sure there's no excess water hiding in the creases of the seal.

How to Clean a Travel Mug or Water Bottle

If you’re anything like me, the extent of cleaning your travel mug or water bottle is a quick rinse-out, swishing the water around before dumping it out, and then just putting the mug or bottle back on the shelf.

Until, that is, you peer inside the bottle and see … ewww, is that mold? Or until you leave your mug, not quite emptied of milky tea, in your car all day. Suddenly, doing a deep clean of that water bottle or mug becomes urgent.

Here’s how to effectively clean all your bottles and mugs.

What you’ll need

• Dishwasher basket: You’ll want one that has a lid and small holes, such as the OXO Tot , to contain small parts.
• Dish soap: We like Seventh Generation Dish Soap , but any dish soap should work.
• Bottle-cleaning brush set: Our favorite is the OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set . It comes with a large bottle brush, a skinny straw brush, and a looped detail-cleaning brush, all linked with a handy ring.
• Distilled white vinegar: Mix this with baking soda; the resulting fizz will help loosen caked-on drink residue.
• Baking soda: Mix this with the vinegar (see above).
• Denture tablets (as an alternative): If you don’t have vinegar and baking soda but you do have denture tablets, they’d be a good substitute. (We’ve used Target’s house brand .)
• Baking sheet: Any flattish, oven-safe pan will work.

How long will this take?

This shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes, plus the time it takes to air-dry. If your mug or bottle is dishwasher-safe, cleaning will take only as long as a cycle in your machine.

Find out if your bottle or mug is dishwasher-safe

This info should be embossed on the bottom of the container, but if it’s not, check the manufacturer’s website. If your mug or bottle can go through the dishwasher, all the better.

We’d still recommend removing any lids or other small pieces and securing them in a closeable dishwasher basket. This should keep them from washing down into the bottom of the tub, where they might get wedged against (and melted by) your dishwasher’s heating element (if it has one).

Insulated containers often aren’t labeled as being dishwasher-safe. The heat and water pressure inside a dishwasher can damage the container’s vacuum seal—and potentially degrade its ability to retain heat or cold over time. Dishwashers can also scratch or wear away the container’s finish.

How to hand-wash your bottle or mug

Most of the time, dish soap and water will do the trick. Drip a little dish soap into the bottle or mug, add some warm water, and scrub away.

You can use a sponge, if it fits all the way into the vessel. But we’ve found that most mugs and bottles are too narrow to allow your hand in far enough to reach the bottom. That’s why we recommend bottle brushes.

Depending on the design of your mug or bottle, you may need a few brushes of different sizes to clean in and around the lid mechanism, the spout, and deep into the vacuum bottle or mug body itself.

We like OXO’s cleaning set because it has three brushes of different shapes and sizes—plus, the whole set can go through the dishwasher (brushes need cleaning too!). We bought a couple of sets in the course of researching our water bottle guide , to confirm their quality, and they are as good as we thought they would be.

Some water bottles, such as those made by Purist , have linings that can be damaged by bottle brushes or abrasive sponges, though. For those bottles, we suggest rinsing them out with soap and warm water or (if they’re dishwasher-safe) putting them in the top rack for a cycle.

For stubborn residue, break out the bubbles

If you’re drinking anything besides water in your water bottle or travel mug, gunk will build up over time. In our water bottles guide, we recommend using bottle brushes and a mixture of baking soda and vinegar . You don’t need much of either.

Drop just a half-teaspoon or so of baking soda into your mug or bottle, and add approximately half a cup of vinegar. It’ll foam vigorously for a few seconds but then die down. At that point, start scrubbing with your brush or sponge.

I’ve also had good results from using denture-cleaning tablets, whose main active ingredient is sodium bicarbonate—otherwise known as baking soda.

How to clean stinky silicone parts

If your bottle or mug comes with silicone gaskets or seals—like the ones on our favorite travel mug , the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug —you may notice that over time they take on the smells of whatever you drink.

To remove the stink from your gaskets, many experts recommend burying them in fresh baking soda for two days. Marguerite Preston, our senior kitchen editor, has a better (and quicker) solution : Bake the silicone pieces in the oven. Here’s her method, adapted from a thread she saw on Reddit:

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Most silicone cookware is oven-safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit or more. But because travel-mug gaskets don’t usually come with heat limits, Marguerite said she errs on the side of caution. Make sure that whatever you’re heating is 100% silicone. Do not put plastic or rubber in your oven.

While the oven is heating, carefully wash your silicone gaskets with dish soap and hot water. Then place the gaskets in the oven on a baking sheet. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Pull the gaskets out of the oven every 10 minutes or so and carefully take a whiff. After about 40 minutes, most of the stink should be gone.

If you do notice a light lingering coffee scent, it might be due to residual coffee oils still clinging to the silicone. Marguerite said she gives the gaskets an extra quick scrub to remove that residue, and the scent disappears almost entirely.

How to Safely Clean Your Gross Travel Mug Lid

Ditch the dishwasher and use these simple solutions instead.

It seems I collect to-go mugs; bonafide, for-the-car containers to keep hot beverages hot at school functions, as gifts, and at the store when mine start to smell bad or stop working properly.

Most travel-mug lids have a rubbery seal made of polypropylene, a food-safe plastic that has a high tolerance for heat—including the type of heat it receives in the top rack of a dishwasher. Many travel mug manufacturers’ product care guidelines recommend top-rack dishwashing as the safest and best way to clean their lids. Not all lids, however, are created equally. Some are made of other, less durable material.

If you’ve had (and dishwashed) a travel mug for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that the seal begins to break down or warp. Your hot beverage doesn’t stay so hot, and the potential for leaks increases. You might also notice a funky smell. That’s because old coffee and bacteria can hide in all those grooves—more bacteria, in fact, than what’s in a dog bowl. Oh, and not to mention, your travel mug lid can actually grow mold.

So while these mugs are great for the environment, they’re not so hot for our health. Follow these steps to keep your gasket and lid in tip-top shape:

How to Clean Your Travel Mug

• Always rinse out the lid (and mug) with warm water after every use. Open and close all the parts while running the lid under the tap. If you’re like me, however, and you end up forgetting your mug in the car (and it sits in there all day and/or night), then read on.
• Take apart any pieces of the lid that you can. Soak them and the lid in warm dish-soapy water for 10 minutes. This will help soften and loosen whatever may be clinging to the lid. If the lid has an open/close mechanism, set it to “open.” Avoid cleansers or anything chlorine-based, but if your lid is particularly stinky, you can soak it in a warm water-baking soda solution for a couple hours instead.
• Rinse under warm water, opening and closing the seal to ensure all the soap gets washed away. For very complicated lids, consider using a bottle or spout brush, clean toothbrush, cotton swab, or pipe cleaner to get at all those hidden places.
• For the occasional deep clean, put 1 teaspoon baking soda in the mug and add ½ cup distilled white vinegar. (This is a great science experiment for the kiddos, too!) After the bubbles settle down, cap the mug, leaving the drinking spout open but covered with your thumb or finger, and shake it. Be warned, as this will really agitate those bubbles. As much as we love our travel mugs, when was the last time you cleaned it, I mean really cleaned it?

I'm not talking about a quick rinse under the kitchen faucet. I mean a deep clean, making sure to get inside all of the nooks and crannies and scrubbing the lid to remove any lingering bacteria.

If I had to hazard a guess, I bet for many of you reading this, the answer is never.

Remember, you take your travel tumbler practically everywhere you go. Just imagine how much dirt and grime has snuck inside some of those hard to reach places.

Used day in and day out, and even with regular rinsing and washing, travel mugs and tumblers can become breeding grounds for mold, some of which can actually make you sick.

Mold And Bacteria Can Cause Health Problems

You might think that a quick rinse under the kitchen faucet with a bit of dishwashing detergent is enough. Sure it might look clean, but in reality, there is still bacteria lingering in those hard to reach places, and a quick rinse won't get it out.

Even if you wash your travel mug or tumbler using the dishwasher, the water can penetrate into the inner and outer layers of insulation, and mold can start to grow.

Also, the rubber ring on the lid can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Mold, which is a type of fungus, thrives in these moist, dark areas. So that means with every sip you take, you're more than likely also getting a mouthful of nasty mold and bacteria. Yuk!

Don't just take my word for it. According to the USDA , consuming certain molds can be pretty dangerous and could potentially cause severe respiratory problems and even allergic reactions.

How To Clean Coffee Stains From A Stainless Steel Travel Mug

Keeping your travel buddy clean and bacteria free doesn't have to be a chore. In fact, you can carry on doing the routine cleaning you've been doing but just make sure you do a deep clean at least once or twice a week.

There are a few simple and effective ways to deep clean your insulated travel mug or tumbler - here are a few of our favorite methods.

Just Use Soap!

By far, the easiest method to clean travel mugs is by simply using regular dish soap. We suggest that you take apart your tumbler or mug as much as possible by removing the lid, rubber seal, and other components which can be easily removed.

Next, fill a bowl with hot water and add a few drops of dishwashing soap. Submerge all of the tumbler parts and allow to soak for 30 to 40 minutes.

Gently clean the different parts with a soft sponge and then rinse under running water to remove any leftover soap and dirt. Leave the tumbler and the parts to air dry.

Clean Using Baking Soda

Every kitchen cupboard has baking soda lying around; let's put it to good use.

Create a paste of equal parts baking soda and water. Using a new toothbrush, gently dab into the baking soda paste and scrub the hard to reach spots on the tumbler or mug.

Once you're happy, give your tumbler or mug a quick rinse under running water and allow it to air dry.

Try Using Some Vinegar To Sanitize

Don't Bleach Your Travel Tumbler Or Mug

Definitely don't add bleach to your mug or tumbler. Bleach contains a powerful oxidizing agent that breaks down the chromium oxide layer from the stainless steel parts.

Chromium makes your steel "stainless" if you remove that, your travel tumbler or mug will rust and stain.

Cleaning your travel mug or tumbler with bleach is a big no-no. Just stick to good old vinegar and baking soda if you need a supercharged clean!

Don't Use Abrasive "Green" Cleaning Pads

It might be tempting to try cleaning your travel mug with a green scourer pad. Don't try; you'll wish you hadn't.

The abrasive cleaning pad will scratch the stainless steel causing it to look "cloudy." Not only that, those scratches can become a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria. Leave those green cleaning pads for your dirty pots and pans and well clear from your travel mug!

Here's what you'll need, how to clean travel mugs.

You're gonna need to know how to clean travel mugs after a few drinks in yours. Can’t leave home without your reusable water bottle? Or maybe you opt for a travel mug that keeps your coffee warm all morning. Either way, travel mugs have become our trusty sidekicks during a long day of errands and a must-have if you’re traveling. 

While they certainly come in handy, when it comes to cleaning travel mugs, a quick rinse doesn’t always do the trick (and it doesn’t provide your cup with a deep clean). Plus, many reusable mugs and water bottles aren’t dishwasher safe. 

So, how can you truly get a deep clean without throwing your cup into the dishwasher? We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you ensure your go-to kitchen accessory stays sparkly clean. Time: 10 minutes (not including drying time) 

Difficulty: Easy

Helpful hints: If you have a dishwasher-safe mug and don’t have the time or supplies for a deep hand wash, place your mug on the top shelf of the dishwasher for the best clean possible. Placing it on the top shelf can help eliminate potential damage in the dishwasher. 

•  Dish soap (you can't go wrong with Mrs. Meyer's liquid dish soap available at Amazon )
• Distilled white vinegar (try Aunt Fannie's white vinegar available at Amazon )
•  Warm water 
• Baking soda (stock up on this 12-pack of Arm & Hammer baking soda available at Amazon )
• Mixing bowl (we like these Figmint glass mixing bowls from Target )

Step 1: Add your cleaning ingredients to your mug

Pour 1⁄2 cup of distilled white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda directly into your mug. We recommend pouring the contents into the mug while it’s held over the sink in case there’s any spillage. 

Let the mixture sit for a few minutes. It should bubble together, creating a light foam consistency.

 Step 2: Seal and shake

Replace the lid on your travel cup. If it has a sliding opening, make sure it is completely closed and sealed. If it has a straw opening, make sure you cover the opening tightly. Shake the mixture inside your travel mug, almost as if you’re mixing a margarita in a cocktail shaker.  

 Step 3: Rinse it out 

Dispose of the vinegar and baking soda mixture into your sink and rinse the cup with warm water. 

 Step 4: Get ready to soak

Fill a bowl with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Soak your mug in this mixture for approximately 10 minutes. Add all components of your travel mug into the bowl. If you have a lid with a rubber seal or detachable parts, remove those and soak them together.  

Step 5: Give it a final rinse 

Rinse off any remaining residue off the mug and lid. 

Step 6: Dry your mug

The best method is to allow your mug to air dry overnight, but if you’re in a rush, drying it with a clean dish towel or paper towel will work just fine. 

How do I know if my travel mug is dishwasher safe?

When you purchase a new travel mug, be sure to look at the packaging to see if it notes that the product is dishwasher safe. If you don’t remember or already tossed the packaging, then look for a dishwasher-safe symbol, stamp, or label. On mugs, these labels are typically located on the bottom and look like a square box containing plates, glasses, or both symbols. 

How often do I need to clean my travel mug?

In an ideal world, we recommend rinsing it out after every use but life happens, right? One day your travel mug might be filled with water, the next it might be used to house coffee, then back to water. If you can get one deep clean in at least once a week, you should be good to go.

Tip: If you want a good, but not necessarily deep clean, soak the mug in warm soapy water overnight. When you are ready to fill it in the morning, rinse it out to get all the suds out.

How Do You Clean A Travel Mug?

You just toss it in the dishwasher and forget about it, right?

For some mugs that works just fine.

But if you have one with double wall insulation, you’ll quickly learn that water gets in between the two walls and is a huge pain to get back out . Often it’s impossible and your mug becomes useless.

So what’s the best way to clean your tumbler, then?

I’m glad you asked.

I’ll give you the best way to clean it in general and then some specific cases that may need a bit more rigorous of a cleaning.

How To Clean A Travel Mug

Here’s what works for a basic cleansing of any type of tumbler: rinse out the inside, while getting as little water as possible on the outside. Use some dish soap to scrub the inside lightly with a dish sponge or light scrubber.

If you can’t reach in, use a brush. If you don’t have one that works, there are sets like this one specifically made for tumblers and water bottles.

If the outside is dirty, wipe it down with a damp cloth. That should generally suffice. The important thing is to avoid getting a lot of water on the outside, to reduce the risk that it can seep in between the two walls on a double wall mug.

That is the reason you don’t want to use the dishwasher, even if you have a cup that is dishwasher safe. You also never want to submerge it in water while washing it. For single wall cups, you don’t need to worry about any of this, obviously.

How To Clean The Lid Of A Travel Mug

An easy way to clean a travel mug lid is to use a toothbrush (or a brush included in a cleaning set like the one mentioned above). Put some dish soap on the brush and scrub dirty parts of the lid.

If this does not get rid of stains or smells, try soaking the lid in a solution of vinegar and baking soda. Disassemble the lid as much as possible, then submerge it in the solution and let is soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

After the soak, use the toothbrush to give it a good scrubbing. Rinse it well to remove all traces of the vinegar solution and let it dry completely. If this does not do the trick, try a product like Oxi Clean. See the section below on removing tea stains for more on that.

How To Get Coffee Stains Out Of Travel Mugs

To get clean tougher stains, like those left by coffee, dish soap will not always suffice. Instead, put 1 or 2 tablespoons of baking soda inside the cup and add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar.

You can just use the cheapest baking soda and vinegar you can find. There is no extra benefit to using expensive brands.

Let the mixture foam up and then sit in the cup for 15 to 30 minutes. After a good soak, use a brush that can reach into the cup (like the one included in the set mentioned above) to give problem areas a good scrubbing.

The lid will need extra care. Follow the instructions in the previous section for that.

How To Get Tea Stains Out Of Travel Mugs

To remove tea stains, follow the instructions in the previous section. If those do not work, it is time to get tougher on those stains, be they tea or coffee or something else.

One option is to use ordinary denture cleaning tablets. Drop a couple into the cup and let them attack the stains. I have never used this method myself, but it is supposed to work well. The reason I have not tried it is because I do not have any denture cleaner handy, while I do have the next product in my home.

That product is Oxi Clean (or a similar stain remover). I know it is meant for laundry, but it works to remove stains from anything, really. In fact, I have never used it for my laundry, but use it all the time to clean my sinks and to remove stains from dishes.

Simply add a tablespoon to the inside of your mug and fill it up with water. Let it sit overnight and the stains will all be gone by morning. Make sure to rinse it out well. For the lid, simply leave it overnight in a bowl of the same solution.

How To Clean Stainless Steel Travel Mugs

Cleaning a metal mug is actually exactly the same as cleaning other types of mugs. Sometimes stainless steel coffee mugs are thinner and longer, which makes it hard to get inside them and scrub them clean. You can use a toothbrush for the sides, but getting the bottom is harder.

A specialized brush like the type included in the cleaning set mentioned above work the best. Personally, I don’t even bother scrubbing. I just soak it overnight in Oxi Clean as described in the previous section. Then you just need to rinse it out and you’re good to go.

How To Get The Stale Coffee Smell Out Of My Travel Mug

This problem is most prevalent with plastic travel mugs, but can happen with any other type as well. Usually with other types, the coffee smell is coming from the plastic lid. If you drink your coffee with milk and/or sugar, the smell will likely be even worse.

Luckily, it is easy to get rid of. Simply soak the inside of the cup and the lid in solutions of baking soda and vinegar as described above. If that does not work, try Oxi Clean. That procedure is also described above.

My Travel Mug Smells Like Mold

The moldy smell results from not letting your mug dry out completely. To remove the smell of mold, simply follow the instructions in the previous section for removing a coffee smell.

My Travel Mug Tastes Like Soap

If your tumbler tastes like soap, you simply need to rinse it out better. Often, it is the lid that was not rinsed well, so take extra care with it and the soapy smell should soon be gone.

If rinsing does not get rid of it, use a vinegar and baking soda solution to soak the inside of the cup and the lid for 30 minutes or so, then rinse. And, of course, stop using that brand of soap in the future.

How To Clean A Contigo Autoseal Travel Mug

The main difference between a Contigo Autoseal mug and a standard one is in the lid. The Contigo lid is more complex, but they did try to make cleaning as easy as possible.

You will see a tab that says push to clean. Push that (bet you never would have thought of that, right!) to flip up the inside section, making it easier to reach everything. You can now simply wash it in the top rack of a dishwasher.

If you are dealing with tougher stains that won’t come out in the dishwasher, follow our method from above to give the lid a deeper cleaning. The method described for the rest of the cup works for Contigo as well.

You can use the same brush set we mentioned above or any brush you already have that works for the purpose. If you prefer, Contigo also makes their own set of brushes specifically tailored for their products. You can find those here .

How To Clean OXO Good Grips Liquiseal Travel Mug

You clean this tumbler using the same method described above. The only possible difference is that the lid has two sections. To make cleaning easier, you want to separate the two parts of the lid first, by holding the bottom part with one hand, while turning the to part counter-clockwise with the other.

Proper Use To Avoid Having To Clean

The easiest way to clean your mug is not having to do it in the first place. Of course, you will always want to give it the occasional deep cleaning, but if you handle it with the proper care, that will be required much less often.

Rinse your mug and lid after each use. If the lid can be shut, make sure it is open so that the water can run through the drinking hole.

Always store the tumbler without the lid, so that the insides can dry out and not get moldy.

One thing you don’t want to do is clean your travel mug with bleach. It is simply too harsh. Not only could it be harmful to your health, it is also likely to damage the color and design of your tumbler.

The Best Way to Clean a Stainless Steel Coffee Container

Your pantry has some powerful solutions — but you need to use caution.

If you use a vacuum-insulated stainless steel container or travel mug for your morning coffee, you can employ some of my favorite ingredients to clean and deodorize it.

Put a tablespoon or two of baking soda in first, then a good glug of cheap household vinegar, and watch it bubble up. Wait for the foaming action to subside, and then put the lid on (if you do this too quickly, you might encourage an explosion as the vinegar and baking soda react).

Shake the container a few times, and then pour it out and rinse with tap water. Let dry before refilling.

How to Remove Coffee Stains From Stainless Steel Travel Mug (7 Ways)

It often surprises people when they pick up their favorite stainless steel mug and notice coffee stains inside. After all, it’s stainless steel, so you’d think you wouldn’t have to deal with stains. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way and coffee will always end up staining your stainless steel mug. So in this article we’ll learn how to remove coffee stains from a stainless steel travel mug.

No one wants to drink coffee out of their favorite travel mug when it’s visibly stained on the inside. It doesn’t really pose any sort of threat to your health, but it definitely isn’t appealing. Luckily, stainless steel is easy to clean, and even the most stubborn coffee stains can be removed. Here’s are some ways to do it.

How to remove coffee stains from a stainless steel travel mug

1. use chlorine tablets.

This is actually the way I recently cleaned out my Contigo travel mug . I’m a huge coffee drinker, like 2-3 cups a day easy. I also fill up my Contigo a couple of times a day. I’ve had it for about 2 years now and that thing had gotten really, really nasty. To the point where these little flakes were coming off in my mouth…. yuk!

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Remember the classic grade school science fair volcano? That explosion of foam is exactly what we want here. Add a few heaping spoonfuls of baking soda to your travel mug- stick to just one or two spoonfuls if it’s fresh, and use more if the package is older. Then, add a very generous pour of vinegar. Vinegar can dissolve stains while the baking soda scrubs them off and deodorizes. Do it right and you won’t even have to scrub.

3. Denture Cleaner

This is a more unorthodox method, but it works. Toss a denture cleaning tablet in your stainless steel travel mug, fill it with water, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, your mug will be stain-free, and all you have to do is dump out the water and fill it with coffee.

4. Dishwasher Detergent

Dishwasher detergent is already designed to get rid of stains, and it can definitely remove coffee stains from stainless steel travel mugs. You usually can’t put those mugs in the dishwasher, though, since very few of them are dishwasher safe. Instead, add a couple of tablespoons of detergent to your mug and then pour in some boiling water. Use a bottle brush to scrub the mug, and then rinse it out.

Coffee stains aren’t just a problem for mugs, they also plague your coffee maker. Left untreated, dirty coffee makers can quickly develop bad flavors and smells that ruin your coffee, so you should always have something like Urnex Tabz around to quickly and easily clean the entire machine- even the parts you can’t get to with a sponge or brush. If you have these on hand, they’re great for cleaning your travel mugs, too. Just add them to your mug along with some hot water and let them sit for a bit.

Possibly the easiest and cheapest way to clean your travel mug, just cut a lemon in half and rub the cut side along the inside of your mug. The lemon will have no trouble blasting through the stain and it will remove any lingering coffee odor, too. Just be sure to rinse the mug thoroughly afterward, or your next cup of coffee might taste like lemon.

7. Dish Soap

If you’re willing to a little scrubbing with a sponge, regular dish soap may be enough to tackle some coffee stains, provided you clean your mug regularly. Just add a few drops of dish soap and warm water, and scrub the inside of the mug with a sponge. It shouldn’t take much effort to get rid of the stains this way.

Cleaning the Lids

Cleaning the inside of the mug is fairly easy. Stainless steel is made to be easy to clean, so the coffee stains should come off without much effort. The lids, though, are a different story. Travel mug lids usually have moving parts, are mostly plastic, and can become much dirtier than the interior of the mug.

If you drink your coffee black , this may not be much of a problem. A quick rinse under hot water will usually do most of the work. If you take your coffee with milk, sugar, or both (like I often do), your lid will quickly get pretty gross.

All of the methods listed above will work to clean your coffee mug lid, but you’ll need to ensure that every inch of the lid is exposed to the cleaning solution. The easiest way to clean your travel mug lid is to place the lid in a large bowl and fill the bowl with the cleaning solution of your choice, then let it soak for a while.

Despite the name, stainless steel can stain or discolor, and coffee is notorious for leaving behind stains in stainless steel travel mugs. That doesn’t mean you have to live with the stain, though. Cleaning your stainless steel travel mug is easy to do and there are plenty of effective cleaning methods to choose from.
