I should’ve started writing this article about Santa Cruz, California, 30 minutes ago but I got too caught up in all the breathtaking photos.

Santa Cruz is a sensational surfing and seaside wonderland.

The Beach Boardwalk is a hallmark of the community and has been going non-stop since 1907.

Two of the rides from back in the day still stand and draw long lines.

Abundant beach opportunities await whether you want to be a big kahuna and surf, spot some whales, tour the tide pools, or just sit and smell the salt air.

You’ll be an expert at tide schedules by the time you leave.

You can also head inland to get a look at some of the biggest trees in the world at Big Basin Redwoods State Park or the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

True crime junkies might remember this is the area where two serial killers operated in the 1970s, Edmund Kemper and Herbert Mullin.

Both have since been caught and are safely locked away.

Surfing fans will remember this is the hometown of pro-surfer Jay Moriarity, whose surfing skills were second to his positive influences and attitude that sparked the saying “Live Like Jay.”

This is a city that prides itself on having liberal views and is very LGBTQ+-friendly.

The artistic and eclectic flair of this town sets it aside from other more traditional beach cities.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Santa Cruz

OVERALL RISK: LOW

There's a low overall risk but that comes with a heap of caveats. This city was once considered one of the most dangerous in America. Rampant crime, drug use, and homelessness controlled the streets. Police have since done a great job of cleaning up much of the crime, but there's still a grit to this seaside beauty.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Santa Cruz Metro provides the bus service here and throughout the county. Greyhound and Amtrack are also available in this area. In town, you've got traditional taxis and rideshares. There is also an in-town trolley system that mainly goes up and down Pacific Avenue. Whatever you choose, there's a low risk, but be vigilant at bus stops as there are a lot of homeless people here who can become aggressive.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

I'm going back to 2019 for crime stats on this one because there was a sharp drop off during the pandemic. There were 18 pickpockets or purse snatching in 2019, a fraction of the 2,363 thefts that happened. There's low risk if you protect your valuables and keep belongings secured.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Wildfires are the biggest risk here and when one starts it can get big quickly. Assuming there isn't a wildfire burning during your visit, there's a low risk. If there is a fire, it quickly goes up to medium.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

There's a low risk of mugging here but the robbery rate is higher than the national average. Since there is a grittier side to this city, it's worth the warning about not fighting back if someone takes your stuff by force. It's not worth risking your life.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

With a more remote location on the coast and no military bases nearby, there's a low risk of terrorism in Santa Cruz.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

The only reported scam that might impact a tourist is a romance scam that starts with meeting someone online and eventually they gain access to your accounts or convince you to give them money. You know better than that, right? We'll call it a low-risk.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Rape statistics are now at the lowest level in four years, and there is a one in 2,406 chance of that happening. Nothing else stands out that should give female travelers concern about being here other than the same concerns for others. You should have your guard up here, but there's no quantifying reason to say there's anything but a low risk.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

Santa Cruz hasn't had a tap water violation since 2016, so there's a low risk. It also meets or exceeds all requirements of the EPA and state agencies.

  • Safest Places to Visit in Santa Cruz

You haven’t visited Santa Cruz if you haven’t gone to the Beach Boardwalk.

The boardwalk is more than a century old and still has the 1924 Giant Dipper roller coaster made of wood and the 1911 Looff Carousel.

Many more rides abound with options, from the dizzying Fireball to the “oh heck no I’m not going that high up” choice of spinning teacups.

This park has water rides and laser tag, as well as a Fright Walk under the boardwalk.

Plenty of dining options are on-site too, from a fresh seafood meal to a custom-sugared churro and root beer float.

Bring me back a funnel cake, will ya?

Now let’s head to the beach.

Right in the center, you’ll see Santa Cruz Wharf.

This is the longest wooden pier in the country and goes nearly 2800 feet over Monterey Bay.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is located here.

Families might feel a little more relaxed at Harbor Beach and Twin Lakes State Beach.

To catch the surfers in action, the most popular spot is Steamer Lane.

Waves can get up to 18-feet high here.

For the best whale watching, you’ll need to visit Lighthouse Field State Beach.

If you walk far enough south on the beach, you’ll end up at Capitola Wharf, a Mediterranean-styled town with a gorgeous wooden pier.

Downtown Santa Cruz is a charming historic area filled with cafes, locally-owned stores, and various entertainment options.

Downtown Ambassadors are waiting throughout the day for a call to help you find the perfect spot for your trip.

  • Places to Avoid in Santa Cruz

The crime maps show the incidents are very widely spread out in the city, but it’s also not that big of a city at just 15 square miles.

The Beach Flats, which is near the boardwalk, is one of the more rundown parts of town, so avoid it if you can (which will be hard since it’s on the Boardwalk).

Lower Ocean is another neighborhood riddled with crime, but it’s also the entrance to the beach area.

You just always have to be on guard here, more than in some other beach cities.

This city is filled with people who believe strongly in whatever their belief system is and they have the courage of their convictions.

Don’t get into a political argument or stare at someone who might look different from you.

Inclusion and diversity are the essences of Santa Cruz and people express themselves in a variety of ways.

Just be open to whatever you see and don’t cast judgment.

There are surfing spots in California and then there’s Santa Cruz.

The surfers here take it very seriously, and you are among some of the best surfers in the world here.

Avoid going surfing near the professionals, no matter how good you did in your lessons.

Ask your surfing instructor where the best place is to go for practice.

Don’t just assume that because people are surfing in a certain spot, that means it’s okay for you to go there.

There is a long history of surfers vs non-surfers in Santa Cruz.

To get in the spirit of Santa Cruz surfing culture, watch the movie Chasing Mavericks.

One of my favorites!

You should avoid even thinking about giving to a panhandler.

Don’t look at them and don’t say anything.

They are notoriously aggressive here to the point where you should have your phone in your hand ready to dial 911 at times.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to Santa Cruz
  • Sign up for emergency alerts from the Santa Cruz Police Department through Nixle. This covers weather warnings, missing people, civil emergencies, and the like. You can easily opt-out when you leave.
  • Get to know the tide schedules well as it will limit where you can go or open new seaside doors, depending on if it’s high tide or low tide. If you hear someone mention King Tides, those are the highest of the high tides and happen seasonally.
  • If you want to swim or surf, you’ll need a wet suit to avoid hypothermia. The warmest it ever gets is 61.5°(F). Cold shock can quickly set in if you don’t wear the right gear.
  • If you are traveling with a dog, you cannot leave it alone in a hotel room. The city takes it seriously and they could call Animal Control if a pet is found unattended. There are plenty of pet-friendly beaches and restaurants to explore with your dog.
  • You can use recreational marijuana in Santa Cruz, but there is a whole list of “buts” that go along with it. You can’t just walk down the street smoking a joint. Check with the city for specifics about where you can and can’t smoke. Even if you aren’t into that, it’s good to know the rules for your visit there.
  • I wasn’t kidding about the homeless here. Even a Santa Cruz travel website reads, “some transients are chronic law violators who often infringe upon the rights of others. We suggest using a combination of caution and respect around panhandlers and other strangers.”
  • It’s tempting to keep the windows down on your car to breathe in the ocean air, but especially in areas like Lower Ocean, keep the windows rolled up and the doors locked. You might see some prostitutes or gang indicators, so it’s best to take the safest ride possible.
  • The Boardwalk is going to get crowded. Very crowded. Clean out your purse or wallet before you go and only take what you absolutely need and then somehow secure it to your body. A backpack is ideal for this. I’m surprised the pickpocket numbers aren’t higher here.
  • You can drink alcohol on the Boardwalk, and many people drink too much, but you can’t take it on the beach. Finish your drink before hitting the sand. Grab a glass of water too.
  • If there’s a wildfire near Santa Cruz during your trip, make other plans. Wildfires can be spread by wicked winds and lead to evacuations of the area. It’s not worth risking your life by trying to hope for the best.
  • So... How Safe Is Santa Cruz Really?

Santa Cruz is a city some locals wish the rest of the world didn’t know about.

Ask locals, they’ll say there are too many drunk tourists that cause too many crimes.

Ask tourists, they’ll say there are too many aggressive homeless people and condescending surfers.

The city gets very crowded since it has so many amenities, but those crowds lead to thefts, fights, and drugs.

You can’t go to Santa Cruz and enjoy the best parts of it without also being in the most dangerous parts of it.

Car thefts and thefts from cars are some of the biggest complaints and crimes in Santa Cruz.

You have to take extra care watching and securing your car while you visit here.

Both the violent crime and property crimes in this area are higher than the California average.

There’s a drug problem here and a gang presence.

Is it an overwhelmingly crime-ridden town?

The potential is there.

Check your ego at the city line, lock your cars and park in well-lit areas, keep your belongings close and watch out for how much you drink.

If you see panhandlers, cross the street to avoid them.

If a situation feels shady, get away from it.

The average tourist is going to have a fun yet eye-opening experience here.

The average tourist is going to leave without becoming a victim of a crime.

A lot of the potential rests in how you behave while here.

  • How Does Santa Cruz Compare?
  • Useful Information

The Visas get handled at the airport, border, or port of entry. You need nothing else to get into Santa Cruz. The drinking age is 21, so if you are going to drink alcohol, carry an ID with you.

You'll use the U.S. Dollar here. Don't carry around cash if you can and certainly don't talk to anyone about the cash you end up carrying. One credit card should suffice and make sure to set purchase limits on it before you go. That way you'll be alerted if there's a suspicious charge.

Not a whole lot of difference between summer and winter here. The coldest months have highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. The warmest months have highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Bring rain gear, but you might not need it. That rain jacket might help with walks on the beach as the ocean can kick up some high, splashy waves in this region.

The San Jose International Airport is about 40 minutes north. San Francisco's airport tacks on another 20-minute drive at least, do plan for an hour to get there. Oakland's Airport is about 1:15 from Santa Cruz. With airports in the bay area, always add 30 minutes to travel time due to traffic. You can also check the CalTrans website for possible delays along the way.

Travel Insurance

Wildfires have notoriously shut down parts of this area, making it a perfect place for travel insurance. If you get a rental car, you should add extra insurance on it as well or make sure your vehicle insurance covers car theft or break-ins in rental cars.

1 Review on Santa Cruz

You are correct about crime. Except it is worse than you reported. Santa Cruz is dangerous. Stay away!! Criminals love Santa Cruz for the ability to sell Fentanyl and carry loaded illegal hand guns while making terrorist threats. Even multiple arrests won’t land you in prison. If you get arrested, Judge Guy will let you off with minor probation.

Santa Cruz: Warnings and Dangers

Despite its ultra-laid-back vibe, the city does have a few problems. Know the dangers so you can stay safe during your visit.

Water and Weather Dangers

Be careful of contaminated run-off from nearby creeks because it often leads straight through the sand and onto the beach. Watch for warning signs and mind any directions you receive. Some beaches get new sand to bulldoze over the contaminated parts, but sometimes the water is still unsafe for human contact. Santa Cruz, like any other place on the northern California coast, gets a lot of fog in the summer. When it is foggy, it is usually chilly, too, near mid 50s Fahrenheit. Be sure to bring warm clothing.

Safety Issues Near the Beach

There are often homeless people who will ask you for cash, but they are generally harmless. At night, there are risks so watch yourself by the piers. Sometimes the people that hang out underneath them may threaten visitors. The area around the boardwalk, called Beach Flats by the locals, is another place you should be cautious. The area is the home to many hotels because of their proximity to the beach, but its high crime and drug-use rate makes it not a great area to visit at night. Although murder is rare, it’s still probably in your best of interests to avoid this place in the early morning.

Driving in Santa Cruz

Watch out for pedestrians in Santa Cruz. You never know when one will walk directly in front of your car, even when you clearly have the right of way, so drive slowly especially on Pacific Avenue in downtown. Also, there is a lot of traffic in Santa Cruz on the weekends, so expect delays.

Also, while walking around make sure you don’t step on banana slugs! They are very common in Santa Cruz and even the mascot of the local university.

  • Complete Guide to Visiting Santa Cruz Bolivia

By: Author James McAlister

Santa Cruz, Bolivia, or Santa Cruz de la Sierra to give it its full name, is the country’s largest city. It’s a sprawling metropolis in the middle of the tropical lowlands.

Despite its size, it’s not a particularly popular stop on the tourist trail for overseas visitors. There are various reasons for this, but the main one given tends to be the location.

Over in the East of the country and close to the border with Brazil, it’s just a bit too far removed from the usual La Paz, Potosi, Uyuni route that people tend to take through Bolivia.

Casa de Gobierno in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia

However, if you have any intentions to experience the Bolivian Amazon, or indeed understand the country on a deeper level, it’s an essential addition to your itinerary.

Understanding Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia

For one thing, it’s totally different to the rest of the country. So much so that you may experience a bout of culture shock when arriving from more traditional areas.

It’s far more modern and westernised than the majority of Bolivia, with rampant capitalism on full display. International chains that you don’t see anywhere else are extremely popular here, and almost an attraction in themselves. Starbucks, Burger King, KFC, and many more brands are all popular.

Additionally, you’ll notice there’s far less traditional dress on show in Santa Cruz. While you do still get the odd person wearing it, they’re the exception rather than in the majority.

Guide to Santa Cruz Bolivia

Some people even go so far as to accuse the city of not being the “real Bolivia”. Others say there aren’t many things to do in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia. But we think that’s ridiculous.

Yes, it may not be what you think of when you picture Bolivia, and even be an outlier when compared to most other destinations. But Bolivia is far more than the one dimensional place it’s often made out to be. Santa Cruz shows a different side and demonstrates just how complicated and diverse it is.

That said, getting to know Santa Cruz can be a little more difficult than other Bolivian tourist hubs. But if you’re willing to scratch the surface and spend a few days here, you’ll be richly rewarded.

Things to do in Santa Cruz Bolivia

On first appearances it can definitely seem that Santa Cruz is a bit of a vacuous city. In fact it has a reputation within Bolivia as being devoid of culture.

But contrary to popular belief, there are tonnes of fun and interesting things to do in Santa Cruz Bolivia.

Whether you’re a nature lover, party animal, shopaholic, or culture vulture, Santa Cruz will cater to your interests. Here are the best things to do in Santa Cruz Bolivia.

Check Out Jardín Botánico Santa Cruz

Around a 30 minute bus ride from the centre of Santa Cruz, you’ll find one of its top attractions. Right on the side of a busy highway, Jardin Botanico comes as a welcome break from the hectic activity of the city.

Like a green oasis, it’s full of various different planted areas. These include a cactus forest, an indoor tropical garden, and a lagoon full of huge fish, tortoises, and caiman.

Botanical Garden in Santa Cruz

Probably the most interesting part of tha botanical gardens is the more natural, less sculpted forest section towards the back. It’s wild and full of interesting wildlife including squirrels, birds, monkeys, and snakes. There are sloths to be spotted too if you’re lucky.

But beware, it’s seriously mosquitoful. This is not an exaggeration – hundreds of the things take great pleasure in swarming after anyone who dares enter. You’ll see most people constantly swatting or waving them away. Do not, under any circumstances, forget your moz spray.

Entry is a very reasonable 10bs per person. There is a restaurant and small shop in the colonial patio that sells great food at cheap prices. For between 15-30bs you’ll get a dish of grilled meat, rice, salad and yuca. You can also grab drinks, ice creams and other snacks here, plus insect repellent if you’ve failed to bring it.

How to Get to Jardin Botanico

Getting here by public transport is extremely simple, though you can also catch a taxi or Uber if you prefer.

First make your way to the small truffi parada one block up on corner of Avaroa and Calle Suarez Arana. Buses will have Cotoca or J Botanico in the window.

Entrance to Jardin Botanico

Jump on and tell the driver where you want to go. It costs 3bs per person and takes around 30 minutes. Buses do get extremely packed, so be prepared for a sweaty ride.

Get Stuffed in Cotoca

A bit further on from the botanical gardens is the small town of Cotoca. You can get there by jumping on the same bus in the same direction to get there and it’s well worth the diversion.

It’s a popular weekend trip for the people of Santa Cruz, who come here for two things.

The first is to show their devotion to the Virgin of Cotoca, patron saint for the Department. There’s a festival held each year where people crawl the entire 35 or so kilometres from Santa Cruz to Cotoca on their hands and knees.

Virgin of Cotoca

The legend of how this came to be is certainly fascinating, but unless you’re a staunch Catholic, probably won’t provide a reason to head to the town.

However, if you’re a food lover, then there’s another fantastic motivation to visit. Cotoca is renowned for churning out some of the best grub in Santa Cruz. So religious or not, come here to worship at the altar of awesome gastronomy.

There’s a Sunday market which covers about 3 blocks outward from the plaza and is usually absolutely rammed. Drinks sellers peddle Chicha de maní, coco water, tamarind juice, and various other delicious thirst quenchers.

But the real star of the show is unquestionably the scran.

Cotoca Sunday Market Street Food

Sonso, long wooden sticks covered in a dough made from yuca, cheese and butter. Corn arepas with cheese. A huge selection of bbq meats. And local delicacy majadito – rice with spices and chicken, almost like a paella, traditionally served with a fried egg and plantain.

Then there’s Patasca. If you can get past the fact that its main ingredient is the head of a pig/sheep/cow, then this rich, thick stew with dried corn which pops open when cooked is hugely popular.

The central plaza is full of life and you can spot sloths climbing around in the trees if you’re lucky.

Cotoca Santa Cruz Bolivia

The main market just off the plaza has lots of traditional goods, but the town is most famous for its painted clay pots. You’ll see them displayed on most street corners.

The bus back to Santa Cruz leaves from the corner of Calle Monseñor Rivero and Calle Santa Cruz and costs 3bs again. From here it will take around 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Hit the Art Galleries

Art is widely celebrated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in all its forms. From modern spaces to showcases of traditional works, you can enjoy various different experiences across the city. Here are a few of the best:

Manzana Uno

This free, non-profit, modern art gallery is located right around the corner from the cathedral on Calle Independencia, just off the main plaza. The name comes from the fact that it’s on the first block of the city. “Manzana”, meaning block in this instance and not apple, as you may have thought.

Manzana 1 , as it’s alternatively styled, features both national and international exhibitions. It’s not huge, but the almost 10,000 visitors it attracts each month should give you an idea of its broad appeal.

Museo Artecampo

A cross between a gallery and a handicrafts shop, Artecampo features the work of mainly female local artisans and artists. Located in an old colonial-style house built around a central courtyard, the art is displayed across a number of separate rooms.

Museums in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

You’ll find a hugely diverse collection of goods including paintings, wall hangings, pottery, tapestries, furniture, wooden carvings and more. The work is of a really high standard, and best of all, if you’re taken with anything, you can simply buy it. Prices are reasonable as well.

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo

Specialising in modern art, this wonderful gallery is housed across six rooms of an old colonial building. It features paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and more by a mixture of both Bolivian and foreign artists living in Bolivia.

The large collection of over 300 pieces is focused on pieces from the 1950s onwards to present day. There are both permanent and regularly changing temporary exhibitions on display. Some of the featured work is also for sale.

Discover Santa Cruz’s Sand Dunes, Las Lomas de Arena

One of Santa Cruz de la Sierra’s strangest attractions is its large range of sand dunes. Otherwise known as Las Lomas de Arena, they’re an odd natural phenomenon, not far from the city centre.

Like the inverse of an oasis in the desert, the dunes are nothing short of incredible. Surrounded by lush green land, it’s like a mini wilderness in the jungle.

Las Lomas de Arena Santa Cruz de la Sierra

There are two lagoons and lots of sand dune to explore. You can spend an enjoyable afternoon or morning tramping across the grains and capture some pretty dramatic photographs while you’re at it.

How to Get to Santa Cruz’s Sand Dunes, Las Lomas de Arena

To get there, catch the number 21 bus from the corner of Calle Ayacucho and Calle Colon. It costs 2bs per person and the bus route finishes near the entrance to the sand dunes, so you don’t need to worry about where to get off.

If you continue to the end of the line, you’ll have to walk slightly back on yourself from its end point. Take the right at the first crossroad you find and you’ll come to the entrance about 100 yards away.

Entrance to Las Lomas de Arena

Park entrance is 20bs per person. There are a couple of shops nearby to buy drinks, snacks etc, and also a small shop just inside the park entrance selling drinks.

It’s a 7k walk from the park entrance to the dunes, but it’s a pleasant walk along a generally flat sand path. If it’s rained recently it will be waterlogged in parts, but you’ll have little problem navigating your way around the puddles.

The last couple of kms are difficult because the sand is not compacted, meaning it takes a lot of effort. Allow slightly longer than you’d ordinarily take to walk this distance and bear in mind it will be a little bit harder than on normal hard terrain.

Las Lomas de Arena hike

There is a small river you have to cross midway that’s just over ankle height. It’s best to take your shoes and socks off for that.

Parts of the walk are shaded by trees either side before and after midday but it gets super hot. Take plenty of water because there’s no shops or anything beyond the entrance.

Along the way there are resting points with benches and tables though they’re not in great condition and because they’re in forested bits you’re likely to get bitten to shit by mozzies. Take lots of mozzie spray as here are plenty around anyway.

There’s also lots of wildlife to spot from gorgeous butterflies and various interesting birds to huge lizards.

Peruse Porongo

The small town of Porongo is a fantastic example of a Jesuit influenced colonial town. The main plaza is unusual for Bolivia in that it’s a large green field, rather than a meticulously designed space.

Porongo Santa Cruz de la Sierra

The stunning church, which dates back to 1716 and is said to be one of the last Jesuit mission constructions in Bolivia, is undoubtedly the main draw here.

It’s famed for its intricately carved, wooden detailing and an outdoor belltower platform featuring the original bells. If you’re in any doubt as to their authenticity, they’re complete with huge, timeworn cracks.

Church in Porongo Santa Cruz Bolivia

The rest of the single story, wooden framed buildings that line the plaza are also beautiful, and constructed in a completely different style to what you’re likely to have encountered in the rest of the country.

Admittedly, there’s not a huge amount to do here in Porongo. It’s a sleepy, traditional town. But if you’re looking to uncover some of Santa Cruz’s supposedly missing culture and history, this is a good place to start.

There’s also a good market just a block from the square where you can grab a delicious Camba lunch. The majadito is highly recommended and extremely cheap.

To get here, take the bus to Mercado Abasto from virtually anywhere on Calle Buenos Aires. There are multiple that go there, just look for one that says Abasto on the front.

From Abasto, walk to the corner of Calle Mitimi and Calle Laguna Orión. Here there is a truffi/bus stop with buses and minivans that only go to Porongo.

How To Get To Porongo Santa Cruz

It costs 7bs per person and takes about 45 minutes.

For your return journey, catch the number 6, 46 or 34 bus back from Abasto to the centre.

Pinpoint the Geographical Centre of South America

Identifying the precise central point of any geographical region is a difficult task, fraught with complications. It depends on many highly debatable factors, such as whether to include remote islands etc.

As such, there are quite a few places that contend to be the geographical centre of South America. But for argument’s sake, we’ll go along with Santa Cruz’s claim to this dubious title.

Centre of South America

It’s simply marked by a small plaque on one corner of a plaza. There’s also one of those signs that features arrows pointing to famous world capital cities with distances.

If you’re at all interested, try working out which, if any, are pointing in the right direction. By our calculations they were virtually all wildly incorrect.

In truth, standing in the exact geographical centre of South America isn’t as momentous as it sounds. However, the plaza where the spot resides is gorgeous and a nice place to chill out for an hour or so.

There’s a nice cafe along one side with tables outside. Or alternatively you can grab a drink and snack from the shop on the corner, take a load off and chill on a bench.

Along the streets surrounding the plaza there is a wealth of really good street art which you can enjoy spotting on your walk back to the centre.

Street Art Santa Cruz de la Sierra

There are also a number of museums and galleries not too far away if you’re looking for something else to do.

Hit the Artisanal Markets

As already detailed, Santa Cruz is Bolivia’s biggest celebrator of capitalism. Vast shopping malls and top international brands are all here.

But by far the most interesting shopping opportunities are provided by the various artisanal markets around the city.

If you’re looking for souvenirs, gifts, or just some cool jewellery or clothing, you’ll find it all.

Best Markets in Santa Cruz Bolivia

The main artisanal market is just half a block off the main square from the corner directly opposite the cathedral on Calle Libertad. Named Paseo Artesanal La Recova, it’s a pair of alleyways joined by a small central courtyard.

The shops sell everything from jewellery made from the native stone, Bolivianita, through colourful textiles, to tacky fridge magnets. The prices are also relatively reasonable, considering its city centre location.

Also on Calle Libertad but on the other side of the plaza, you’ll find a smaller, more low key artisanal market. It’s not got a name, as far as I’m aware, but it has a number of shops selling similar goods.

Alternatively, in the space to the side of the cathedral, where Calle Bavillian meets Calle Libertad, there’s a weekly Sunday market. Here you’ll find stalls selling a real mixture of goods, from artisanal crafts to food.

Immerse Yourself in the Museums

Just to further dispel the myth that Santa Cruz is a cultural wasteland, there are numerous interesting museums to visit. Whether you’re interested in the region’s unique story, natural history, or the beautiful handicrafts produced here, there’s one for you.

Street view in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

In fact, there are over forty museums across the city. Sure, many are small, niche spaces dedicated to a single subject. But there are some crackers that really shouldn’t be missed.

Museo Guaraní

This tiny, single room museum is said to be the only one which specialises solely in the Guarani culture, indigenous to this part of eastern Bolivia.

It features over 150 pieces from the local area. These include ceramic pots, musical instruments, animal masks, and vessels traditionally used in the production of corn chicha.

If you speak Spanish you’re likely to get a personal guided tour with entertaining explanations and stories about the exhibits.

Museo de Historia Natural Noel Kempff Mercado

Affiliated with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Gabriel René Moreno Autonomous University, this museum is dedicated to the research and conservation of the regions biodiversity.

There are sections on botany, evolutionary and earth sciences, environmental education, and zoology. While not a huge space, among the tens of thousands of natural history items you’ll find samples of all kinds of animals, insects, and plants from the local area.

Museo de Arte Sacro Monseñor Carlos Geniche

Inside the cathedral on Santa Cruz’s main plaza you’ll find a tiny museum dedicated to the religious history of the city. Despite its diminutive size it’s got reams of religious relics, the majority made out of gold or silver.

There are also paintings, sculptures, and various other religious artefacts, many of which are hundreds of years old and hold huge historical significance.

Relax in the Main Plaza

Plaza 24 de Septiembre is the central hub from which Santa Cruz sprawls outwards from. It’s buzzing with life at all times of the day and night and is a wonderful and entertaining space to chill out in.

Plaza 24 de Septiembre Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia

Full of palm trees and overlooked by the fantastic cathedral, it’s absolutely gorgeous. And the bustling atmosphere means that you can easily lose hours of your day to people watching.

Groups of old guys congregate around the fringes of the plaza. Crowds form to watch competitive games of chess, while the small benches are often laden with as many as five gentlemen squashed together talking animatedly, smoking, and punctuating their conversations with dramatic gesticulations.

Shoe shiners Santa Cruz

Shoe shiners laugh and joke with their regular customers. Ice cream and drinks sellers wander around peddling refreshing goods.

Take some time to relax in Plaza 24 de Septiembre in the middle of a day’s sightseeing or at the end of a long day of activities.

Climb the Cathedral Towers

The cathedral is breathtaking to look at from the outside from virtually any angle. But for views over the rest of the city, you really need to hit the cathedral itself.

From it’s tower you get stunning panoramas over the whole of Santa Cruz. Or at least as far as your eyes can see. It will give you an idea of just how vast this metropolis is.

What to do in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

As well as great views of the city at large, you also get a bird’s eye view of the plaza itself.

There are two viewing platforms in the one tower that you’re allowed to climb, each at a different height. You can also head up to the third and top floor to get a glimpse of the tower’s clock mechanism. And if you time it right, you can even watch it bong.

Entrance is a bargainous 3bs per person, it’s open until 6pm.

Best Bars in Santa Cruz

One thing Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia is indisputably well renowned for is its banging nightlife. Whether you’re after some chilled craft beers in a chic setting or a few delicious cocktails and some live music, you’re not short on options. Here are some of our favourites:

Santa Cruz Beer Company

Probably the city’s largest brewer, Santa Cruz Beer Company also operates a pair of swish bars.

The first one is just a couple of blocks off the main plaza and a gorgeous, stylish space. Exposed brick walls, beautiful arches, and contemporary lighting.

The second and even more impressive is a couple of miles out of the centre in a residential area. Completely outdoors, it’s an absolutely stunning beer garden that has to be seen to be believed.

Santa Cruz Beer Company

Now the beer that Santa Cruz Beer Company makes isn’t actually amazing, but it’s certainly drinkable. They have a good selection of interesting brews, but you can certainly get better quality elsewhere in the city.

That said, the bars themselves are so stunning that they’re worth the visit alone.

Nomad Hostel

A hostel by day, Nomad opens up to the public at night. It’s a really cool city centre bar with an outdoor patio and various seating areas.

As you’d expect from a hostel/bar, there are cheapish drinks and a cool vibe. It’s a mixed crowd of hostel dwellers, locals and visitors. They also have live music from time to time.

Rival to the Santa Cruz Beer Company, Bendita is also located in a residential area slightly removed from the centre. It’s also got a really cool beer garden, but truthfully not a patch on the surroundings at Santa Cruz Beer Company.

Bendita Bar Santa Cruz de la Sierra

However, Bendita makes what is probably the best beer in the city. They have a brilliant selection of styles from all over the world as well as some more unusual ones made with things like tamarind and passion fruit. They also do pretty good pub-style food here.

This city centre bar is located right next to the cathedral, just off Plaza 24 de Septiembre. It looks tiny from the outside, but the inside is a bit of a door to Narnia situation.

Best bars in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

The small indoor area opens onto a large patio, with some extra tables on the overlooking balcony. The cocktails are decent here, while weekends have a lively atmosphere, often with live music and lots of dancing.

Situated above an electronics mall, what at first seems like an odd setting for a pub actually turns out to be an amazing location. Why? Well it’s right on the main plaza and provides great views of its comings and goings.

Inside is decked out with dark wood and low lighting like a traditional Irish pub. But unsurprisingly, the best place to sit is actually outside on the balcony, for obvious reasons.

You can get Guinness here, but disappointingly it’s Guinness original and in a small bottle. It’s also a bit pricey due to location, but they do regular specials and deals you can take advantage of.

Casa Melchor Pinto

This cultural centre/cafe/bar is a terrific place to hang out during the daytime and grab some refreshments. Just half a block from the main plaza, it’s also very conveniently located.

Constructed around a bright, sun-blushed courtyard, this building was previously the home of local man Melchor Pinto, hence the name. It’s an old colonial-style construction that’s been tastefully restored.

The courtyard holds the majority of the seating, while in the buildings around the edges you’ll find various areas of interest. There’s a museum section which details former owner Pinto’s history and his fight for Santa Cruz’s autonomy. You’ll also find a lovely little modern art gallery showcasing the work of local artists.

YVYPY Sky Bar in La Pascana Center

On the corner opposite the cathedral above a shopping centre called La Pascana is the unpronouncably named YVYPY. It boasts absolutely incredible views of the church and the plaza.

Prices are actually reasonably cheap, despite the setting and prime location, but don’t expect great things.

The service is atrocious, even for Bolivian standards, with long waits and unattentive staff. Plus the food is just what you’d expect to find on the roof of a shopping centre and not worth bothering with.

Not exactly a glowing review so far. So why on earth are we recommending this place, then, I hear you ask? Well you’ll soon forget about those minor inconveniences when you’ve got views like this.

Rooftop bar Santa Cruz Bolivia

Head up early evening to watch the sun set behind the cathedral, it’s truly spectacular.

Where to Eat in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is renowned for having some of, if not the very best food in Bolivia. And it lives up to its reputation and then some.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of great eateries here so this is by no means an extensive list. But here are our top recommendations for where to stuff your gob in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Restaurant Ken

One of the most noticeable contrasts between Santa Cruz and virtually the rest of Bolivia, is the huge diversity of people here. One of the largest communities in the area is Japanese, something that’s reflected in the huge number of Japanese restaurants.

Restaurant Ken has earned its reputation as one of the oldest and best regarded Japanese restaurants in Santa Cruz.

A little removed from the centre, it’s worth the short cab ride out. Don’t expect fancy decor or super stylish furnishings, this is an old school eatery that places its emphasis on flavour.

Japanese food Santa Cruz Bolivia

The menu is extensive and showcases the best of Japanese cuisine, from sushi to chicken katsu and everything in between. They have a number of combo meals that include a selection of dishes and provide great value.

Mercado Nuevo

The food in this region is called “Camba” and it’s totally unique to the area. It’s reflective of the more tropical surroundings, with heavy spicing, plenty of heat, and bursting with flavour.

For a bargain basement meal of traditional Camba food, there’s no better place than the very central Mercado Nuevo. Located just a couple of blocks from the main plaza, the biggest part of the market is dedicated to food.

Mercado Nuevo Santa Cruz de la Sierra

You’ll find plenty of staples like majadito, locro, tamales a la olla, as well as some favourite national dishes. And best of all, the prices are very wallet-friendly.

Head inside, pick your stall and simply sit down and order. We’d recommend choosing one of the stalls with crowds of people around it as it’s guaranteed to be great fare.

This quirky collective encompases a bar, a cafe, a restaurant plus various artistic endeavors from fashion to craftworks. It’s a shared space where all of the businesses are nominally connected.

It’s a lovely place to hang out day or night, with various areas to chill in. There are hammocks, bean bags, traditional tables and chairs and cosy snugs to curl up in.

The restaurant here is called Buddha Bowls and does exactly what it says on the tin, plus a little more. Healthy, delicious, colourful, vegan dishes take centre stage, including ingredients like falafel, salads, sandwiches and beans.

La Federal Budda Bowl

You can grab a bite to eat from Buddha Bowls, order a brew from the cafe, and enjoy an alcoholic beverage from the bar, all from the same seat. Prices are extremely reasonable as well.

Tía Lia

As Santa Cruz Bolivia sits just a few hours from the Brazilian border, it’s little wonder there’s a visible influence on the local food. But you can also find some kickass straight-up Brazilian restaurants.

Open for lunch only, Tía Lia is a fantastic Brazilian BBQ with a salad bar boasting over 30 different concoctions. However, unlike a traditional Brazilian BBQ, it has two pricing options.

Brazilian BBQ Santa Cruz Bolivia Tía Lia

The first is what you’d probably expect, where you get unlimited food and return as many times as you wish. The second affords you one go at building the largest mountain of food you can construct in a single pass around the buffet. Both alternatives also include soup and bread.

It’s an unbelievably popular space for lunch, popular with office workers and city dwellers alike. Because of this you may have to wait a moment for a table, but they turnover quickly and there are plenty of them.

It’s extremely cheap and has a nice, friendly atmosphere, perfect for a quick, tasty lunch with a salad overload.

How to Get to Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Regardless of where you’re arriving from in Bolivia, you have two basic options for getting to Santa Cruz. In all honesty, neither are ideal, so you’ll just have to pick the best of a bad pair unfortunately.

If you’re coming from quite far away like La Paz , Uyuni , or Sucre then a flight will probably be your best choice. If you’re travelling from somewhere a bit closer like Samaipata , Trinidad or even Rurrenabaque, a bus will potentially be a better option.

Getting to Santa Cruz Bolivia By Plane

This is the preferred option for most visitors, with daily flights from all of Bolivia’s main cities. But while journey times are extremely short, the aircraft are generally pretty old and really tiny.

If, like me, you’re not a massive fan of flying, then this might not appeal too much. Another negative for going by plane is that delays and cancellations are commonplace on internal flights in Bolivia.

However, when weighed up against the alternatives, it might still win the fight. Most of the flights into Santa Cruz Bolivia are operated by Amaszonas and can be booked at relatively short notice.

For the best prices on flights check out kiwi.com , our go to flight search engine.

Getting to Santa Cruz Bolivia By Bus

The “roads” in this part of Bolivia are notoriously bad. I put that in italics because many aren’t even deserving of such a lofty title.

While extensive work has been ongoing for a number of years to improve them, plenty are still woefully poor.

What this means is that though some patches will be newly paved and gloriously smooth, others are little more than bumpy dirt paths.

If you’ve got the stomach for it, then it’s not actually too bad in the dry season. But come rainy season it’s a completely different matter as the regular downpours turn most routes into impassable mud baths.

At a minimum, journey times shoot up, while at worst buses are simply cancelled if it gets too bad.

How to Get Around in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

There are plenty of options for getting around in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, most relatively cheap. Here are your top options:

Bus or Truffi

Truffis are the small local buses that you’ll see buzzing around the narrow streets. They generally cost between 2-4 BOB (£0.25-0.50 GBP, $0.30-0.60 USD) and there’s a fantastic network that goes virtually all over the city and beyond.

How to Get Around in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

They’re easy to flag down as you can simply stick your hand out regardless of whether you’re at a stop or not. They also let you off wherever you want, you just ask the driver to stop.

Finding the right information on which bus to get where may be more challenging. Finding someone who can tell you what bus to get where is surprisingly reasonably difficult.

Most truffis have destinations in the window ,so if you spot your destination, game on. You can ask the bus drivers themselves and they tend to have a decent idea which number you’ll need. But even the tourist information centre gives incorrect advice, as did our hotel, so beware.

It seems as though every other car in Santa Cruz Bolivia is a taxi. I’m not sure what the entry requirement is, but it seems that sticking a sign in your front window is sufficient.

I say this because sometimes taxi drivers refuse fare due to not having a clue where your intended destination is. Also many of the cars aren’t in great shape.

That said, if you’re heading to somewhere well known they’re a quick and easy way to get around. Be sure to negotiate your fare before you get in to avoid any nasty surprises.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra is one of only a few cities in Bolivia to have Uber. If you’re an Uber user then you’ll be familiar with its many benefits. They include knowing roughly what you’ll pay up front, journey times, and decent vehicles – even including ones with air conditioning.

However, the Uber drivers in Santa Cruz have a habit of ignoring the suggested route and going whichever way they please. This can be extremely frustrating and potentially cost you more, though sometimes it is down to their superior local knowledge.

Weather in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Unlike the highlands in the West of Bolivia, with their typically cool climates, Santa Cruz de la Sierra is positively tropical. Hot, humid, and relatively cloudy is the norm.

There are generally two seasons here, wet (summer) and dry (winter). The rainy season runs from October through April, while the dry season goes May to September.

Temperatures remain remarkably constant year round, with the mercury hovering on average somewhere between 20-26°C (68-78.8°F). In rainy season you can expect tropical downpours most days, usually in the afternoon.

Weather in Santa Cruz Bolivia

The rain can get pretty serious, with streets temporarily turning into rivers. This can be disruptive as Santa Cruz really is an outdoor city.

However, the storms don’t tend to last long, a few hours max normally, so they’re very easy to work around.

Where to Stay in Santa Cruz Bolivia

The specific area that you choose to base yourself in Santa Cruz doesn’t actually matter too much. It’s such a spread out city that you’re gonna have to get transport around to get to most places.

Where To Stay in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

More important is to find somewhere that fits your budget and comfort level. A word of warning though, the most popular accommodations in this city get booked out literally months in advance.

It’s best to book as far as you can before your stay to allow yourself a decent choice and avoid disappointment. Here are our top picks of where to stay in Santa Cruz Bolivia.

Cheap & Cheerful – Nomad Hostel

As mentioned in the best bars in Santa Cruz section, Nomad is first and foremost a hostel. The location, half a block from the plaza, is second to none, and some rooms have views of the cathedral. It’s the perfect place to base yourself to explore the city.

There are both dorms and private rooms, but whichever you opt for you’ll enjoy the benefit of the friendly atmosphere. There’s the shared lounge and garden, and of course the bar downstairs come nightfall.

There’s great wifi, air conditioning, and even a great breakfast included in the price. The friendly staff also speak perfect English in case your Spanish isn’t up to scratch.

Midrange – Cosmopolitano Hotel Boutique

Also centrally located, the Cosmopolitano Hotel is a super chic boutique with lovely spacious rooms. Each features air conditioning, huge flat screen TVs, private bathrooms and a mini bar.

They’re all beautifully decorated, extremely bright, and equipped with modern furnishings. The Cosmopolitano also has a great little pool, perfect for cooling down on the hot Santa Cruz days.

Also included is a fabulous breakfast with a huge choice of delicious grub to select from including fruit, cereals, and local favourites like cunapes. This hotel is an absolute bargain for the price.

Affordable Luxury – Los Tajibos

Looking for something a little more upscale? Look no further than the 5 star Los Tajibos. Amongst its luxurious facilities are a huge outdoor swimming pool in a beautifully sculpted garden, gym, and spa.

Los Tajibos’ super comfortable rooms are kitted out in stylish decor and include air con, flat screen TVs, while some even boast terraces and spa baths.

They pride themselves on the excellent service here and you’re guaranteed a great reception and to be looked after by the attentive staff.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance

We got quite a few warnings about our safety from Bolivian people we spoke to before heading to Santa Cruz de la Sierra. It’s got a reputation as being a bit dodgy.

In truth, the advice around precautions you should take are the same for visiting any big city around the world. Keep your belongings close by, try not to put yourself in dangerous situations etc.

Is Santa Cruz de la Sierra safe?

That said, we would never travel here without a decent travel insurance behind us, and neither should you. It’s just not worth the risk, as unfortunately accidents and the unexpected do happen.

Our go to travel insurance provider is World Nomads. We’re big fans of their no nonsense approach and bullshit-free policies. Unlike with most insurance companies, you can even purchase policies after you’ve set off on your travels.

Don’t take the risk, grab yourself a free, no obligation quote below:

This quintessential California beach town is synonymous with sun, sand, and summer fun. Most tourists head straight for the boardwalk and don't get much farther than the nearby sandy beaches and fishing pier. However, Santa Cruz has so much more to offer.

Spectacular seaside scenery, a historic mission church, and a charming downtown reward visitors who explore further. Just a short drive from Santa Cruz is the gorgeous Highway One route alongside Monterey Bay, with amazing ocean views. In this pristine marine environment, seals frolic in the deep blue waters and surfers ride the crashing waves of the Pacific.

Outdoor sport enthusiasts and nature lovers appreciate Santa Cruz for its serene beaches and unspoiled landscapes. Breathtaking coastal hiking trails are found at the rugged Wilder Ranch State Park, while lush Mediterranean flora and pink-throated hummingbirds thrive at the U.C. Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden.

Santa Cruz also offers interesting cultural attractions. For an enchanting experience, tourists can attend a Shakespeare performance on a starry night in a magical redwood glen. There's also a Surfing Museum that gives visitors a taste of California surfing culture.

Bicycles on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk delivers classic summertime fun, complete with amusement park rides, games, and tourist attractions. There is no charge to enter the expansive seaside amusement park, and you can decide between all-day unlimited-rides access, a Season Pass, or a pay-as-you-go MyBoardwalk Play Card (ideal for those who are not staying the whole day).

The park overlooks the Main Beach and has been delighting visitors since 1907. It's considered one of the best seaside amusement parks in the world because of its fantastic setting and historic roller coaster rides.

The Giant Dipper , a wooden roller coaster built in 1924, is classified as a National Historic Landmark . Other activities include thrill rides, family rides, and kiddie rides, with a good mix of classic and modern designs to suit every taste.

In addition to the rides, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk offers entertainment and dining options. Kids can play air hockey, Skee-Ball, pinball, and other traditional arcade games, as well as the latest video games.

Telescope overlooking Main Beach

Besides the boardwalk, the main reason to visit Santa Cruz is the beach. The sunny Mediterranean weather, sandy shores, and safe waters make Santa Cruz one of the best beach destinations in California.

Visitors can choose from several excellent beaches; the two most popular are Main Beach, adjacent to the Boardwalk, and Cowell Beach, which is next to Main Beach on the other side of the wharf.

Popular for sunbathing and swimming, Main Beach is also great for kids. There's enough room for little ones to spread out and make sandcastles; and because the beach is in a sheltered cove, it is safe to wade in the waters. Beach volleyball players also flock here to take advantage of the sand volleyball courts.

In the same cove as Main Beach on the opposite side of the wharf, Cowell Beach is a famous surfers' spot. This stretch of sandy shoreline is also known for its coastal views and beautiful sunsets. The Dream Inn on Cowell Beach offers stylish seaside accommodations.

Lifeguards patrol Main Beach and Cowell Beach during the summer.

Santa Cruz Wharf

The Santa Cruz Wharf was built in 1914 to serve deep-water vessels, however today it is used as a fishing pier and sightseeing vantage point.

Tourists will find plenty of shops and things to do at the wharf, and it is one of the most popular places to sample the local seafood. One of the best restaurants on the pier, Stagnaro Bros. serves fresh seafood, including classic dishes like fish and chips, in a dining room with stunning bay views.

Bird-watching and sea lion viewing are other reasons the wharf is so popular with tourists. Sea lions make their home here year-round, and their splashing and barking is easily heard from the pier. A viewing area allows visitors a good look at the sea lions resting on the pier structure.

During specific seasons, whales, dolphins, and otters can also be seen in the waters. The wharf also has water sports shops that rent fishing gear, boats, and kayaks, so that you can get closer to the wildlife and enjoy the water.

Right by the wharf (at 35 Pacific Avenue) is the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center . The facility features interactive exhibits that educate visitors about how to responsibly enjoy the ocean and help protect the marine environment. Visitors can explore the marine environment through a Biodiversity Kelp Forest, an Intertidal Touchpool, and an Open-Ocean Mini-Theater.

West Cliff Drive & the Surfing Museum

A six-mile pathway on West Cliff Drive hugs the coastline and provides a scenic route for walking and cycling. Along the way, the views of the Pacific Ocean are truly breathtaking. The path is completely flat and wheelchair-accessible, making this sightseeing route appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.

Well-positioned benches invite passersby to sit back and soak up the panoramas of undulating deep blue seas as seagulls soar above and flocks of pelicans hover near the water.

Santa Cruz claims to be the original California surf town, and this picturesque section of the Monterey Bay is a favorite surfers' spot.

A bronze surfer statue is found along the path, as is the world's first surfing museum. The Surfing Museum is housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse (701 West Cliff Drive) on a bluff overlooking the crashing waves. The small exhibit shows memorabilia, such as vintage photos of surfers in the 1930s.

Natural Bridges State Beach

The remarkable sea arch that graces this beach was formed from the fractures in mudstone cliffs. With its iconic natural beauty, this small protected sandy beach is an excellent place to visit for relaxation and bird-watching.

The location is also ideal for viewing migrating whales from April through November. Sometimes seals and otters can be seen playing just offshore. Farther along, the beach has tide pools that are home to sea stars, small crabs, sea anemones, and other ocean creatures.

During springtime, the park near the beach is filled with vibrant wildflowers. From mid-October to mid-February, the park's Monarch Grove , declared a Natural Preserve, comes alive with monarch butterflies. The grove's fragrant eucalyptus trees blossom in winter, providing the butterflies with a source of food. November is the best time to observe the monarchs.

The beach has a picnic area with barbecue pits and restroom facilities, located in a shady grove of pine and eucalyptus trees.

Roaring Camp Railroads

For a change of pace and to see the area from a unique perspective, hop onboard an old-fashioned train in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Roaring Camp Railroads takes passengers through the picturesque natural environment of Santa Cruz. These scenic train rides appeal to young and old alike.

Roaring Camp Railroads offers two different routes: one departing from Roaring Camp (in Felton, in the Santa Cruz Mountains) and traveling to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and another from Roaring Camp to Bear Mountain.

The Santa Cruz Beach Train departs from the Santa Cruz Mountains in Felton (Roaring Camp) and travels a spectacular route through the awe-inspiring Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park into the San Lorenzo River Gorge, passing through a tunnel built in 1875. The trip ends at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and then embarks on its return trip.

Alternatively, passengers can hop aboard the train at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk station and take a reverse round-trip; however, the last train at 4pm does not return to the Beach Boardwalk. Tickets may be purchased at Roaring Camp or from the conductor at the Boardwalk departure location.

The Redwood Forest Steam Train is a narrow-gauge steam locomotive (dating to the 19th century). This historic train takes passengers through soaring redwood groves, and winds through the mountains to the top of Bear Mountain . During the journey, the conductor shares information about the forest and the history of Roaring Camp Railroad since it was created in the 1880s to haul lumber out of the mountains.

The Redwood Forest Steam Train runs daily year-round, whereas the Santa Cruz Beach Train only runs on weekends from the spring through the fall.

A humpback whale breaches in Monterey Bay

Santa Cruz is just a 45-minute drive from the historic waterfront town of Monterey and is situated alongside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary , one of the largest marine sanctuaries in the United States. This protected ocean environment extends for 276 miles along the coastline and provides habitat for 36 marine mammal species and 525 fish species.

This area, off the coast of Monterey, is one of the best places to visit in California to take whale watching and ocean wildlife sightseeing cruises. Cruises depart from the Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey. The Half-Day Whale-Watching Tour from Monterey gives passengers the chance to spot gray whales, humpback whales, and blue whales, depending on the season.

Each year, from April through November, humpback whales migrate through the region, and there is also a small population of humpbacks that stick around all summer.

Gray whales are also very common here, and a migration season of December through April gives winter tourists the opportunity to experience whale watching.

In late spring, tourists might catch a glimpse of migrating killer whales, and pods of the gigantic blue whale are seen in Monterey Bay with some regularity.

U.C. Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden

Overlooking Monterey Bay, the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden stands on an ancient marine terrace in the Santa Cruz Mountains . This exceptional site on the university campus is a vast outdoor classroom for scientific study, as well as a destination for gardeners and nature lovers. The 135-acre site provides the ideal microclimate and topography for Mediterranean plants to grow.

Different sections represent plants from Australia, California, New Zealand, and South Africa. Many of the plants are endangered in their native environments, and the Arboretum works to protect them from extinction.

Special features of the Arboretum include the Australian Garden ; a fragrant Eucalyptus Grove ; the small Butterfly Garden , planted with flowers and shrubs that attract butterflies; a research garden used to study the native flora of California; and " Hummingbird Hotspots ," which offer a chance to see pink-throated Anna's hummingbirds.

Visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch in the picnic area with its stunning ocean views. The Arboretum offers free docent-led tours (on the first Saturday of the month) and art exhibits throughout the year.

A highlight of the Arboretum, Norrie's Gift & Garden Shop sells beautiful Mediterranean plants that are ideal for home gardens.

Santa Cruz Harbor

The Santa Cruz Harbor shelters two large marinas and provides boating access to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The harbor is a hub for sailing, kayaking, and other recreational water sports such as stand up paddleboarding. Visitors may rent kayaks and paddleboards.

Several companies at the harbor offer charter-boat fishing excursions , private sailboat trips, or yacht charters. The Sea Spirit Ocean Safari focuses on whale watching and ocean wildlife viewing.

Keeping watch of the coastline, the Walton Lighthouse stands on a jetty at the harbor. The lighthouse was constructed in 2002.

Tourists will appreciate the dining options at the harbor. The restaurants feature a lively ambience, gourmet cuisine, and waterfront views.

Mystery Spot

This surprising site needs to be seen to be believed. The Mystery Spot is located on a circular area of the redwood forest that is 46 meters in diameter, where the normal effects of gravity do not apply. Objects and people appear to be tilted even when attempting to stand up straight, and the gravitational anomaly makes visitors question the laws of physics.

The effect is utterly puzzling, and scientists have not been able to explain the phenomena at Mystery Spot since it was discovered in 1939. This has not stopped speculation, however, and both professionals and amateurs have come up with theories, from potential natural causes to the presence of extraterrestrial beings.

After taking a guided tour and pondering the scientific mysteries, visitors may go for a hike on the nearby trail, which winds through the redwood trees.

Downtown Santa Cruz is home to name-brand stores, as well as a wide variety of unique locally owned shops, several of which carry one-of-a-kind items created by local designers.

The city's music scene gives the downtown area a happening ambience. During the summer months, there are regular performances that are free and open to the public.

Downtown Santa Cruz hosts First Fridays, art exhibits by local artists, and a weekly Community Farmers' Market held on Wednesday afternoons year-round.

Blue whale skeleton at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center

Near Natural Bridges State Park, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center immerses visitors into the fascinating world of marine life. The education-focused facility is operated by UC Santa Cruz and stresses the importance of conservation.

The Exhibit Hall educates visitors about oceanic research and topics such as elephant seal behavior and the sea otters' ecosystem, and also hosts regularly changing exhibits.

The center is also home to an Aquarium , which gives visitors the opportunity to view a wide variety of both large and small aquatic life, including sharks. Kids will have fun discovering sea anemones, sea urchins, sea stars, and hermit crabs in the touch pool.

Shakespeare's Works

Theater lovers can spend a magical evening in a redwood glen while being entertained by superb Shakespearean actors. The Santa Cruz Shakespeare company performs plays written by William Shakespeare, as well as other theater productions inspired by Shakespeare's works.

Performances are held at the Audrey Stanley Grove , which is located in the heart of Santa Cruz at DeLaveaga Park. This outdoor theater venue includes a picnic area on the ocean bluffs, which features marvelous views of the Monterey Bay.

The season runs from July through August, and advance purchase of tickets is recommended; ticket prices vary depending on the seating section.

Santa Cruz Mission

The Santa Cruz Mission is part of a State Historic Park on Mission Hill within easy walking distance of downtown Santa Cruz. Founded by Franciscan Christian missionaries from Spain in 1791, the Misión la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz (Exaltation Mission of Santa Cruz) was the 12th mission established in California.

The mission was severely damaged by a devastating earthquake in 1857, and today only one small adobe building survives from the original mission.

The rest of the complex is a replica constructed in 1931 from adobe and wood, designed to look exactly like the original, including a one-third scale replica of the 1797 mission church. Original paintings, wooden crosses, and a tabernacle door are found in the church, recreating the historic ambience.

In the style of California missions, the austere white-painted adobe church features a wooden-beam ceiling and is minimally decorated. A lovely oil painting of the Virgen de Guadalupe adorns the side wall of the church.

The Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park also features exhibits about the California Indians, the Ohlone, Costanoans, and Yokuts people, who resided here at the time the missionaries arrived.

Colorful houses in Capitola

With its sheltered sandy beach featuring gentle turquoise waves and pastel-painted waterfront houses, Capitola is reminiscent of a Mediterranean fishing village. This charming seaside village was California's first beach resort (dating back to 1874), and the picturesque setting has made it a tourist-favorite destination for over a century.

Several quaint streets wind through the small downtown area of Capitola, which overlooks the beach and gives the village a refreshing quality. Many of the town's cafés and restaurants have ocean views. Visitors enjoy strolling through the town to browse the boutiques, as well as taking walks along the bayside esplanade.

Right next to the downtown, Capitola Beach is a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. Because the waters are calm, it's also a good place for boogie boarding and stand up paddleboarding.

Other things to do include fishing from the Capitola Wharf or taking a fishing excursion by boat in the bay. Boat rentals are available from Capitola Boat and Bait (a fishing license is required).

Foodies should be sure to make a stop at Gayle's Bakery & Rosticceria , a short drive from the Capitola Beach and downtown area. Gayle's combines an authentic French bakery with an Italian deli and espresso bar. Here, you can savor the finest cappuccinos, croissants, and other freshly baked pastries, or pick up gourmet sandwiches for a picnic at the beach. Gayle's also serves hearty meals like beef bourguignon, rotisserie chicken, and lasagna.

Wilder Ranch State Park

Wilder Ranch State Park lies four miles north of downtown Santa Cruz, immediately west of Highway One and bordering the UC Santa Cruz campus. With 35 miles of trails on 7,000 acres, this unspoiled nature site is an inspiring place to go hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The scenic trails wind through valleys and coastal terraces with sensational ocean views.

Tourists can also learn about the lives of California's early ranchers by visiting the park's historic dairy ranch. Here, visitors can explore an 1859 Gothic Revival farmhouse and an 1897 Victorian home, the ranch's barns and rodeo arena, and other historic structures.

The park charges a day-use parking fee. Guided tours are offered (free of charge) on Saturday and Sunday at 1pm; reservations are not required.

Address: 1401 Coast Road, Santa Cruz, California

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History presents a wide variety of art exhibits and cultural events with a focus on topics related to California landscapes and local history. Exhibitions range from paintings of the Monterey Bay to biographies of 19th-century Santa Cruz County residents.

A highlight of the museum is the Mary and Harry Blanchard Sculpture Garden on the museum's rooftop. This sunny outdoor patio space displays interesting contemporary sculptures and features panoramic views of Santa Cruz.

Top 10 Things To Do In Santa Cruz, California

Last updated: April 19, 2024 . Written by Laurence Norah - 8 Comments

From San Francisco, an easy day trip is to pop across to the gorgeous town of Santa Cruz, famed for its boardwalk, laid back vibe and surfing opportunities galore. We’ve visited a number of times, and based on our experiences, have come up with a guide to all our favourite things to do in Santa Cruz.

This guide to visiting Santa Cruz would serve well for visiting Santa Cruz for anything from a few hours (perhaps as part of a California road trip ?) to a few days. As well as a guide to what to do in Santa Cruz, we’ve also included some extra ideas, resources and links to prepare you for your visit to this lovely spot – however long it may be!

Things to do in Santa Cruz

1. the wharf.

Certainly one of the most popular activities to do in Santa Cruz is to take a walk out on the west coast’s longest pier. It’s just celebrated its centenary, and offers gorgeous coastal views, not to mention sea lion spotting opportunities.

It’s also offers up a good variety of places to eat, many of which specialise in seafood of course. The takeaway fish and chips is a popular option, just watch out for hungry gulls…

2. Amusement park and Beach boardwalk

Back on dry land and just next to the wharf is another classic attraction, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This is California’s oldest amusement park and is free to enter, with payment on a per ride basis.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk

Sure, you won’t get the white knuckle thrill rides of some of the larger parks in California, but there is a wooden roller coaster and numerous more classic fairground attractions to keep you entertained.

3. Surfing museum on West Cliff Drive

All of West Cliff Drive is worth visiting, as it offers excellent views of the pier and city, not to mention giving you the chance to watch the surfers playing in the waves of “Steamer Lane” down below.

If you want to learn a bit more about the history of surfing though, you should take a moment to drop in at the Santa Cruz surfing museum in the Mark Abbott Memorial lighthouse, found on Lighthouse Point.

This is around a 15 – 20 minute walk from the pier, and features all kinds of information on the history of surfing, from its origins in Hawaii as well as the 100 years or so of surfing history in Santa Cruz itself.

No guide to what to do in Santa Cruz would be complete without mentioning one of the cities most famous activities – surfing! If a surfing museum sounds a bit dry for your tastes, then just hop into the water below, at the aforementioned Steamer Lane surfing hotspot, which is just below the lighthouse.

Access is easy to this well known spot, and it’s believed that the modern day surfing wetsuit and leash were developed here by Jack O’Neill, who had his shop just nearby.

Beyond Steamer Lane, there are 10 more locations you can surf at in Santa Cruz, including the legendary Pleasure Point, so you certainly aren’t going to be bored, whatever your level.

5. Natural Bridges State Beach

Ok, so this was my favourite thing to do in Santa Cruz. Because I like sunsets, natural beauty, and taking pictures of both of those things.

If you continue along the West Cliff Drive Road for a couple of miles, you’ll come to the Natural Bridges State Beach National Park. This is a 65 acre national park, with the highlight being that natural bridge out in the water, which is coated in birdlife, including pelicans and cormorants.

There’s an excellent view of the sunset from the vantage point carpark above the beach, but my favourite spot was down on the beach itself looking at the arch, with the sun setting off frame. Bring a neutral density filter for some great long exposure opportunities!

6. More Museums

If you’re interested in visiting a museum whilst in Santa Cruz beyond the surfing museum, the city has plenty of options for you to consider.

is santa cruz safe to visit

These include the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History , The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History , the Seymour Marine Discovery Center , Santa Cruz’s Children’s Museum of Discovery , Capitola Historical Museum and the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Exploration Museum .

As you can see, whatever your interests may be, we are sure you will find a museum you will enjoy in Santa Cruz.

7. The Mystery Spot

Now for a few locations outside of Santa Cruz, starting with the Mystery Spot . This is a very popular and fun attraction just outside the city, where you can appear to witness the laws of gravity bending before your very eyes!

The Mystery Spot has been a popular attraction since the 1940s, and is today listed on the California Registry of historical places. The attraction features a house built upon a specific location, where you can see all sorts of odd things happening, like balls appearing to roll uphill.

Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

The attraction is a lot of fun, especially if you are visiting Santa Cruz as a family. Visits are by guided tour only, with tours leaving multiple times an hour (tour regularity depends on time of year).

You will need a car to visit – in fact, the attraction first launched to cater specifically to new automobile owners looking for things to do in the Santa Cruz area.

There’s parking on site, with a per vehicle fee charged. If you have a larger vehicle like an RV you will want to reserve a parking spot in advance as parking for larger vehicles is limited.

I would also add that the Mystery Spot is very popular, especially in the summer months. There is a maximum capacity per tour, and tours can sell out hours in advance. For this reason, we strongly suggest booking your tour timeslot in advance on the official website here .

Once your tour is booked, leave plenty of time to get to the Mystery Spot. You will want to arrive around 30 minutes in advance of your tour time to give you time to get up the narrow road to the parking lot, pay for parking and pick up your tickets.

While you are in the area, which is found within the beautiful redwood forest, you might also want to check out the 30 minute hiking trail which is also found on site.

8. Roaring Camp

If you love steam trains and giant redwoods, then you’ll definitely want to ensure a visit to Roaring Camp is on your to-do list when you visit Santa Cruz.

Roaring Camp is primarily popular for the historic train rides it offers. There are two main routes – you can take the train to and from Santa Cruz, or you can take a steam train ride through the Redwood Forest.

Roaring Camp Santa Cruz

The latter is definitely a must-do experience, as the train winds its way up through the stunning redwood trees to the top of nearby Bear Mountain.

If you want to ride the steam train, which is definitely a recommend experience, then we suggest booking your tickets for the ride in advance to secure a spot. You can do that online in advance here .

There is more to see and do at the Roaring Camp depot as well. There are usually live demonstrations of traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, as well as a number of historical themed properties you can tour.

To get to Roaring Camp you can either take the train up from Santa Cruz, or you can drive and park on site. There’s a fee for parking. If you do visit by car, then you should also visit the next attraction on our list, which you can do directly from Roaring Camp without needing to move your car (and pay for parking again!).

9. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

Whenever we’re in California, we always make sure we find some time to visit at least one of the redwood forests in the state. Walking among these massive trees is a wonderful experience.

The good news it that there are a number of locations near Santa Cruz where you can redwoods. One of our favourite locations to see the redwoods near Santa Cruz is the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park . This is right next to Roaring Camp.

Redwoods Santa Cruz

Here, you’ll find a number of trails through the state park, with the most popular of these being those which take you through the 40 acre grove of old-growth redwood trees. The oldest tree in the park is over 1500 years old and 277 feet tall!

There are also wildlife spotting opportunities, places to camp, as well as extensive hiking, horseback riding and swimming options. We can also recommend stopping by the visitor centre where you can learn all about the environment you are experiencing.

Visiting the park itself is free, but there is a day-use car parking fee. As mentioned above, if you want to visit Roaring Camp as well, you can walk between the two attractions, to save having to pay for parking twice.

10. And more!

There is of course a lot more to do in Santa Cruz beyond the above. There’s the Big Basin Redwoods State Park , hiking, kayaking and cycling opportunities, not to mention the busy downtown area to name but a few options.

You might in fact decide that you want to visit Santa Cruz for more than just a few hours. If so, check below for our hotel recommendations for Santa Cruz.

How to get to Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is easy to reach by car from San Francisco, either as a day trip or as part of a Pacific Coast Highway road trip down the coast to Los Angeles. We recommend searching for your car rental on Discover Cars here . They compare a range of providers so you can find the best deal for your trip.

You can also reach Santa Cruz by public bus from San Jose – the Highway 17 express, and there are a number of Greyhound options as well.

Where to Stay in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has plenty of lodging options, from motels through to bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals, campgrounds, resorts. Pretty much something for everyone. A number of properties have gorgeous sea views, and we’re sure you won’t struggle to find the right property for you.

To help you with your planning, here are some options to consider across a range of budget options.

  • The Islander Motel – Found around 0.7 miles from the Santa Cruz boardwalk, this is a well reviewed budget motel which offers air conditioned en-suite rooms with microwaves and fridges as well as free parking
  • Harbor Inn – a well reviewed budget 2* inn found 10 minutes drive from the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Most rooms come with en-suite facilities, and free parking is available on site with a reservation
  • Rio Vista Inn and Suites Santa Cruz – five minutes walk from the Santa Cruz boardwalk, this refurbished historic mansion offers lovely en-suite rooms with free parking available on site
  • Ocean Pacific Lodge – just three blocks from the boardwalk, this 2* hotel offers quiet en-suite rooms in a great location with free parking available
  • Seaway Inn – just moments from the beach and wharf, this is a well reviewed 2* inn. Rooms are en-suite, breakfast is included, and there’s free parking on site
  • Cliff Crest Inn – just a few minutes walk from the boardwalk and wharf, this is a well reviewed 2 star hotel offering a number of individually decorated rooms, most with en-suite facilities. Breakfast and parking are included.
  • West Cliff Inn – part of the four sisters brand, this is a beautiful bed and breakfast found in a Victorian home. En-suite rooms come with breakfast, and some offer stunning sea views. There’s free parking, as well as complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre in the afternoon.
  • Beach Street Inn and Suites – just across from the main beach, with many rooms offering beach and sea views, this is a well rated  inn. En-suite rooms include free parking.
  • Edgewater Beach Inn and Suites – Just across from the beach and boardwalk in Santa Cruz, this is a well rated property with en-suite rooms and free parking

If you’re looking for more options, our advice would be to check out the Santa Cruz listings on booking.com , we find they tend to have the most options when it comes to finding somewhere to stay, and the best prices too.

Where to Eat in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has no shortage of dining options – whether you’re looking for laid back road-trip fare like burgers, or more upscale fine dining options.

Some of the best options include Linda’s Seabreeze Cafe, the Chill Out Cafe, Dharma’s (for vegetarians and vegans), the Taqueria Vallarta (for Mexican) and Oswal’s (for fine dining). We don’t think you’ll struggle to find somewhere good though, plus there are a number of options along the wharf which offer lovely views as you eat.

Please notice that most hotels listed are 2* hotels. There is a lot of drug use in these hotels and surrounding areas. I personally would not stay in 90% of those hotels. Oh and at Natural bridges…..which is lovely, the bridge has fallen, yet a walk along West Cliff drive alone is worth the day trip. Traffic is killer after 330pm….so plan to arrive before or after rush hour. Capitola, just a few minutes away is a wonderful village with many things to do. Enjoy our beautiful beaches and parks. Pack your trash out please.

Hi Monique,

Thanks for your tips on the West Cliff drive walk and traffic in the area. As you note, the bridges in the park collapsed in 1905 and 1980. We also very much agree on your point about packing trash out!

For the hotels, I think it’s made clear in the descriptions which properties are budget / 2* and which are not. We like to provide people with a choice but always encourage anyone booking to check recent reviews as of course hotels can go up and down in quality. We list ten properties across a range of budgets. I’d definitely be interested to hear which one of the ten you’d recommend. Additionally, if there are others in the area you would suggest instead, I’d be happy to consider them for inclusion.

Thanks again, have a great weekend,

This 3-mile walking and biking path offers some of the best views of the county – and it's a great workout too. Along the way, you'll be treated to pristine vistas of the Pacific Ocean and you might even spot some surfers riding the waves at Steamer Lane or whales and dolphins cresting the water at Lighthouse Point. You can also stop in to the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum along your stroll, which is stationed inside the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse.

Recent travelers and locals said West Cliff Drive is a must-do. According to reviewers, the beauty is unparalleled, and the benches that line the path are a nice pit stop along the 6-mile round-trip walk. To avoid crowded paths, some travelers recommend visiting on a weekday and also note parking can be difficult to come by on weekends.

Santa Cruz Main Beach Santa Cruz Main Beach free

Santa Cruz Main Beach is also known as Boardwalk Beach since it stretches the length of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk . In the summer, it's one of the busiest beaches in Santa Cruz thanks to its lengthy list of amenities, including lifeguards, restrooms, nearby food options and amusement park rides and games. During other seasons, it's a popular place to take scenic strolls.

With its on-duty lifeguards and fairly gentle waves, travelers say this is a great beach for families. If you're visiting during the summertime, reviewers recommend arriving early in the day to stake out a prime spot, as the sand can get crowded quickly.

The Santa Cruz Wharf dining and shopping district sits on the water of a nearly 100-year-old wharf and features all those gifts that coworkers and family members expect you to bring back, from locally made Marini's Candies to Made in Santa Cruz apparel.

For most travelers, it's not the shops or eateries that warrant a visit here – it's the views from the wharf. Some recent travelers reported spotting sea lions lounging nearby, but others said the vistas of the famous surf spot Steamer Lane and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk are pretty awesome, too.

Visitors can also tour the train depot's grounds, which include an old-fashioned general store, playing fields, a stage for special events and more.

Offering the best of the Golden State, Santa Cruz is the quintessential California beach town. After all, it's where three vacationing Hawaiian princes first surfed the USA in 1885 and the place Jack O’Neill invented the wetsuit in the 1950s. Santa Cruz’s history is cemented in this iconic California sport. Surfers tote their boards to the beach, where families relax on the sand as children splash and play in the water.

Where else can you ride a vintage wooden roller coaster but at the renowned Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk; walk out a half-mile into the waters of the Monterey Bay on the century-old Santa Cruz Wharf; or visit a surfing museum housed inside a lighthouse overlooking Steamer Lane, one of the best places in the United States to surf?

For beginners, surf instructors provide wetsuits and surfboards and get you up on the waves. Once you’re ready, grab your big stick and head to one of Santa Cruz County’s mellow beaches and experience what “Surf City” is all about.

New public art sculpture outside Santa Cruz library branch celebrates the power of words

Visitors at the Live Oak Library Annex in Santa Cruz can now enjoy a towering art sculpture called “The Letters.”

The 7-foot-tall welded-steel sculpture has been installed outside the new Live Oak Library Annex, said Santa Cruz County on Monday. It comprises more than 1,000 individually cut letters that form the shape of a human figure who is kneeling while picking up words.

Created by David and Sooja “Soo” Choi , the piece refers to the power of words and how they can come alive to convey meaning. It contains words such as “love,” “fairness,” “respect,” and “trust.” It reminds us that our choice of words can shape our destinies when we speak them into existence, according to the county.

The Chois immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1982. For 40 years, the couple has created a robust portfolio of various artwork and collections in both public and private spaces throughout the Bay Area. Their previous work can be viewed on their website.

Soo specializes in sculpting with metals, acrylic, and mixed media materials to create conceptual pieces with deeper meanings. David is a printmaker who studied at the prestigious Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. They work as a team while each retaining their own unique, artistic style, the county said.

The public will have the chance to meet the artists during the Live Oak Library Annex grand opening later this summer. The Live Oak Community rooms have reopened and can be reserved for public use. The Live Oak Library Annex will also start offering limited library services this summer, the county said.

Scheduling for the annex’s grand opening is still underway, said Jason Hoppin, Santa Cruz County’s public information officer. In the meantime, visitors can check out the newly erected art sculpture and delight in the shadows generated when sunlight shines against it and seeps into the open space between its letters.

Crime and public safety | citizens group leads underage sex sting on santa cruz beach boardwalk.

Author

Police booked 40-year-old Stanislaus County man Kirill Viktorovich Neledva on suspicion of three felonies, including soliciting sex acts, contacting a minor with sexual intent and distribution or exhibition of lewd material to a minor, in addition to two misdemeanors for contacting a minor with sexual intentions and child endangerment.

Child Safety Soldiers founder Shane Coyle, who contacted the Sentinel regarding the sting, said he confronted Neledva during a pre-arranged meetup at the Boardwalk with Santa Cruz Police Department officers waiting in the wings. Coyle alleged that his organization’s director of decoys and organization partner, who he referred to as J-Dog, chatted online for three months with Neledva after identifying himself as a 13-year-old girl. Coyle and J-Dog met with the Santa Cruz police to detail their efforts and provide documentation of their at times sexually explicit conversations in the hours before the bust, Coyle said.

Child Safety Soldiers provided screenshots of conversations and photos shared between “Nick” and the decoy teenager to the Sentinel. The organization was formed out of Coyle’s experiences with a predator interacting inappropriately online with his then 11-year-old daughter seven years ago. Coyle, of New Jersey, posts his work across social media, including live video updates and said he, along with his team of J-Dog and “Dozer” and in affiliation with Worldwide Predator Hunters, has been involved with more than 600 stings.

Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Jon Bush confirmed Tuesday that his investigators had sat down with the Child Safety Soldiers team before arresting Neledva late Monday night. Officers followed up Tuesday with a search warrant of his home, located in the city of Ceres, according to Coyle. Bush gave Child Safety Soldiers’ staff credit for their efforts to bring the case to his department with proper research.

“We did make that arrest but we’re still in the initial stages of the investigation and going through all of the evidence,” Bush said. “There was enough probable cause to make an arrest last night, but it’s still going to take many hours of digital forensic evidence, cellphone text messages, until the investigation is complete.”

This week’s sting was not the first underage predator operation set in Santa Cruz. Two years ago, organizers behind the San Diego-based Creep Catching Unit set up a similar trap that ensnared Watsonville resident Valentin Rodriguez, then a 62-year-old Hartnell College instructor who believed he was meeting a 14-year-old girl at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Rodriguez was sentenced to two years of probation in September.

Neledva remained held at the Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail Tuesday evening.

Us gas prices are falling. experts point to mild demand at the pump ahead of summer travel.

is santa cruz safe to visit

NEW YORK (AP) — Gas prices are once again on the decline across the U.S., bringing some relief to drivers now paying a little less to fill up their tanks.

The national average for gas prices on Monday stood around $3.44, according to AAA. That’s down about 9 cents from a week ago — marking the largest one-week drop recorded by the motor club so far in 2024. Monday’s average was also more than 19 cents less than it was a month ago and over 14 cents below the level seen this time last year.

Why the recent fall in prices at the pump? Industry analysts point to a blend of lackluster demand and strong supply — as well as relatively mild oil prices worldwide.

Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

Today’s falling gas prices, explained.

There are a few factors contributing to today’s falling gas prices. For starters, fewer people may be hitting the road.

“Demand is just kind of shallow,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said, pointing to trends seen last year and potential lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Traditionally — pre-pandemic — after Memorial Day, demand would start to pick up in the summertime. And we just don’t see it anymore.”

Last week, data from the Energy Information Administration showed that U.S. gasoline demand slipped to about 8.94 million barrels a day. That might still sound like a lot — but before the pandemic, consumption could reach closer to the 10 million barrel-a-day range at this time of year, Gross noted.

Beyond pandemic-specific impacts, experts note that high gas prices seen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and persistent inflation may have led many Americans to modify their driving habits. Other contributing factors could be the increased number of fuel-efficient cars, as well as electric vehicles, on the road today, Gross said.

Some of this is still seasonal. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted that gas prices typically ease in early summer because of refinery capacity. At this time of year, he said, many factors boosting prices in late winter and early spring — particularly refinery maintenance — are no longer present.

“Once refinery maintenance is done, output or utilization of the nation’s refineries goes up — and that contributes to rising supply,” De Haan said. And that stronger supply, paired with weaker consumption, has led to a “bit more noticeable” decline in prices this year. He added that U.S. refinery utilization is at some of its highest levels since the pandemic.

Separately, the Biden administration announced last month that it would be releasing 1 million gasoline barrels , or about 42 million gallons, from a Northeast reserve with an aim of lowering prices at the pump this summer. But De Haan noted that such action has little impact nationally — 42 million gallons equals less than three hours of U.S. daily gas consumption.

“Really, what we’re seeing right now with (declining) gasoline prices … has been driven primarily by seasonal and predictable economics,” he said.

What about oil prices?

Experts also point to cooling oil costs. Prices at the pump are highly dependent on crude oil , which is the main ingredient in gasoline.

West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark, has stayed in the mid $70s a barrel over recent weeks — closing at under $78 a barrel Monday. That’s “not a bad place for it to be,” Gross said, noting that the cost of crude typically needs to go above $80 to put more pressure on pump prices.

Oil prices can be volatile and hard to predict because they’re subject to many global forces. That includes production cuts from OPEC and allied oil producing countries, which have previously contributed to rising energy prices .

OPEC+ recently announced plans to extend three different sets of cuts totaling 5.8 million barrels a day — but the alliance also put a timetable on restoring some production, “which is likely why the price of oil had somewhat of a bearish reaction,” De Haan said.

Could prices go back up?

The future is never promised. But, if there are no major unexpected interruptions, both Gross and De Haan say that prices could keep working their way down.

At this time of year, experts keep a particular eye out for hurricane risks — which can cause significant damage and lead refineries to power down.

“Prices move on fear,” Gross said. In the U.S., he added, concern particularly rises once a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico — and even if it doesn’t eventually make landfall, refineries may pull back on operations out of caution. Impacts can also range by region.

But barring the unexpected, analysts like De Haan expect the national average to stay in the range of $3.35 to $3.70 per gallon this summer. Gas prices typically drop even more in the fall, and it’s possible that we could see the national average below $3 in late October or early November, he said.

What states have the lowest gas prices today?

While gas prices nationwide are collectively falling, some states always have cheaper averages than others, due to factors ranging from nearby refinery supply to local fuel requirements.

As of Monday, per AAA data, Mississippi had the lowest average gas price at about $2.94 per gallon — followed by $2.95 Oklahoma and just under $2.97 in Arkansas.

Meanwhile, California, Hawaii and Washington had the highest average prices on Monday — at about $4.93, $4.75 and $4.41 per gallon, respectively.

This story has been corrected to note that U.S. gasoline demand has slipped to about 8.94 million barrels a day, not billion.

Same-sex spouses were typically younger and were more likely to be employed than those in opposite-sex marriages, although many of those differences disappeared after the legalization of gay marriage in 2015. That's according to a new report released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau. Almost 1.5 million people lived with a same sex spouse in the U.S. in 2022, double what it was in the year before gay marriage was legalized. The 2015 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriages legal in every U.S. state. The decision proved to be a watershed, with around 41% of same-sex spouses getting married within four years of the ruling.

Organizers said Tuesday that the 40-year-old struck a deal with a competing brand. That's a red line for the Nathan’s-sponsored event. Those vying for second place in the past might have renewed hope to swallow their way to first this year, including international competitors on the eating circuit.
