Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” from the 1983 album “Frontiers,” arrived 40 years ago and went on to peak at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To commemorate its release, rock artists Daughtry and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm have teamed up for tribute single, which Chris Daughtry tells Variety was inspired by the show “Stranger Things.”
“We wanted to do a classic cover and we had kicked around the idea of doing something that had this ’80s vibe,” he says. “There were a couple of songs we had in the mix.”
Popular on Variety
Daughtry had another idea: to turn the song into a duet. He immediately thought of Hale. “Lzzy and I had been talking for years about working on a song together, whether it be an original or a cover,” he says of his past tourmate. “We’ve done stuff live before, but never recorded anything. I texted her about doing ‘Separate Ways’ and she was, like, ‘That’s my go-to karaoke song! I’m all in.”
Producers Marti Frederiksen and Scott Stevens recorded the two in Nashville. Sys Daughtry: “Everybody was in their own spaces doing their parts. It was such a fun experience just watching Lzzy work. She’s such a pro and an incredible vocalist. There’s a few singers that make me jealous of what they’re able to do with their voice, and she’s one of them.”
An added bonus: Frederiksen’s studio had a kick drum head with the Journey logo on display. “I’m looking at that drumhead, like, this wasn’t even planted here,” was it?” says Daughtry. “It showed that it was meant to be — just a little happy accident.”
Added Hale: “Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. Journey!”
Daughtry is set to tour starting in March.

Daughtry and Lzzy Hale have teamed up for a cover of the Journey hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”
The cover comes nearly 40 years after the song was initially released as a single supporting Journey’s Frontiers LP, featuring a powerhouse vocal by the band’s then-frontman Steve Perry. Both talented singers in their own right, Chris Daughtry and Hale are well suited for the complex vocal arrangement, delivering a passionate duet over a heavier musical rendition.
Posted Daughtry on Facebook : “40 years ago today Journey released this song as a single from their album ‘ Frontiers .’ It is truly an honor to share this rendition with you. We hope you dig it!!!”
Hale added, “Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY! This song is not only part of the ‘Stranger Things’ soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as I can remember! I’m so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!”
The cover marks the first material from Daughtry since 2021’s Dearly Beloved . Meanwhile, Hale released one of the strongest hard rock albums of last year with Halestorm’s Back from the Dead , notching a spot on our top heavy albums of 2022 list .

Hale also unveiled a new signature model guitar in 2022: the Gibson Explorerbird . The unique axe features a Gibson Explorer body/neck and a Gibson Firebird headstock and continues the ongoing partnership between the guitar company and the Halestorm frontwoman, who became the first female Gibson brand ambassador in 2021.

Daughtry + Lzzy Hale Give Powerhouse Vocal Performances Covering Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ for Song’s 40th Anniversary
It takes a powerhouse voice to take on the Journey classic, "Separate Ways," so how about we give you two? Daughtry has covered the song, with a vocal assist from Halestorm 's Lzzy Hale giving us the first must-listen cover of 2023!
The song is arriving today (Jan. 5) to coincide with the actual 40th anniversary of the original track's release. "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" initially appeared on Journey's 1983 album, Frontiers , serving as the record's lead single. The track provided a vocal showcase for Steve Perry , eventually shooting up the charts to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and crossing over to hit No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track saw a bit of a revival over the past year with its usage in the Netflix series, Stranger Things .
“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years," says Lzzy Hale. "What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY!”
She adds, “This song is not only part of the Stranger Things soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as i can remember! I’m so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!” And now we can't get the idea of Lzzy Hale doing karaoke to this song out of our head.
Daughtry comments, “I’ve always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the Stranger Things season finale and there's this incredibly intense scene and 'Separate Ways' was a big part of this scene. It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like 'THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.'”
He adds, "Then I was like, 'How can we make this extra special? What if it was a duet? What if we got Lzzy on it!!??' Needless to say I was pumped she said yes and I absolutely love how it turned out."
The cover doesn't disappoint, with Daughtry and Hale showing some serious vocal power. The Daughtry version does take a few liberties with the arrangement, allowing for he and Hale to make the cover their own. Interestingly enough, with the two booming vocalists showing off their pipes early on, the song ends with powerful whisper vocals. Take a listen below, and be sure to find the track via the platform of your choosing here .

Relations in the Journey camp are rather less harmonious, however. According to court documents filed in the County of Contra Costa in California in November, guitarist Neal Schon is suing guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Cain over access to the band's financial records.
"Plaintiff Schon is the leader and original founding member of the iconic American rock band Journey," states the filing. "This action is brought to turn the lights on, so to speak, and obtain critical financial information Schon has been trying to obtain but has been denied."

The document goes on to claim that Cain set up an American Express account without telling Schon, and that "millions of Journey funds have flowed through it."
In response, Cain issued a statement that read, "“This is a matter that should have been resolved privately, but I am forced to publicly respond now to Neal’s malicious lies and personal attacks on my family and I in an effort to garner public support for his ill-conceived lawsuit — a lawsuit that has absolutely no merit.
"Neal has always had access to the credit card statements; what he lacks — and what he is really seeking — is the ability to increase his spending limits. Since Neal decided to publicize what is going on, I can tell you we will present the evidence to the court that shows that Neal has been under tremendous financial pressure as a result of his excessive spending and extravagant lifestyle, which led to him running up enormous personal charges on the band’s credit card account.
"When efforts were made to limit his use of the card to legitimate band expenses, Neal unfortunately decided to attack me rather than trying to get his reckless spending under control. I am saddened by the situation — for Neal and for our fans — but since Neal filed a lawsuit, I suspect he will not be able to ignore the court like he has ignored the countless financial advisors and accountants he has fired over the past several years who have tried in vain to help him."

Daughtry and Lzzy Hale Cover Journey’s 1983 Power Ballad “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”
by Tina Benitez-Eves January 6, 2023, 3:04 pm
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Journey classic “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” Daughtry and Halestorm ‘s Lzzy Hale have teamed up to cover the classic ballad.
Videos by American Songwriter
“Get ready for Daughtry’s cover of ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey featuring me—My favorite Journey song by the way,” teased Hale on Instagram a day before the release of the track on Jan. 6.
She added, “I’ve wanted to release a duet with Chris Daughtry since we went on tour together in 2013. It’s not every day that I get the opportunity to parley with a vocalist who is just as devoted (i.e. nerdy) as I am. What a talent he is, as well as being such a wonderful human to be around. Thank you Chris for asking me to the prom.”
Daughtry revealed that he wanted to do a classic cover, something with an ’80s vibe, and was inspired to cover the Journey hit after watching the season four finale of Stranger Things, which featured the classic.
“It was such an incredible episode, the way it was so cinematic,” said Daughtry . “I remember the song coming on, and the way they had chopped it up with the scenes. It was so vibe-y. I was like, ‘this is it.’”

When thinking of turning the song into a duet, Daughtry immediately thought of Hale. “Lzzy and I had been talking for years about working on a song together, whether it be an original or a cover,” he said. “We’ve done stuff live before, but never recorded anything. I texted her about doing ‘Separate Ways’ and she was, like, ‘That’s my go-to karaoke song! I’m all in.’”
Working with producers Marti Frederiksen, who Daughtry said had a Journey drumhead in the studio, and Scott Stevens, the two recorded their parts as a charged-up metal ballad.
“Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years,” said Hale. “What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences—Journey.”
Released on Journey’s eighth album, Frontiers, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” was released on Jan. 5, 1983, and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Journey is scheduled to go on tour in 2023 in support of their 15th album, Freedom , released in 2022.
The band Daughtry is set to kick off the UK leg of their Dearly Beloved Tour, named after their most recent 2021 album, in March 2023, while Halestorm starts their world tour in New Zealand on Jan. 30.

Eva Under Fire Roars Through Heavy Cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways”
Has the world finally remembered Journey had hits beyond “Don’t Stop Believin’?” The song wasn’t even their biggest single at the time (at least in the US), but, judging by Spotify play counts, it has now eclipsed any of their other hits. But in the cover world, at least, the great “Separate Ways” is making a comeback. Karine Hannah covered it in February , and now that gets followed up with a killer version by hard-rock band Eva Under Fire.
In her recent feature on AOR covers , Hope Silverman wrote:
When it comes to Journey covers, there isn’t a lot of middle ground. On the one hand, you have the acolytes, who tend to be so faithful to the originals that their covers often amount to nothing more than karaoke. Then there are those who take the insufferably ironic approach, donning wigs while performing songs in a “comedic” fashion. Like it or not, Journey songs, and the “Separate Ways” video , in particular, lend themselves pretty easily to that kind of mockery.
Eva Under Fire symphonic-metal version threads that needle perfectly. It’s fun but not funny , taking the song seriously enough but still giving it that over-the-top theatrical bombast it needs. And damn singer Amanda Lyberg can belt; next time Journey needs another lead singer, maybe give her a call?

“One of the wonders of Stranger Things is that it has a way of connecting each of the songs to its multigenerational audience around the world in very unique ways,” the show’s longtime music supervisor Nora Felder previously told Billboard . “That reflects the power of a meaningful, timeless song — and how its significance can be revived and reconceived when it is married to a remarkable story such as Stranger Things .”

Steve Perry Has Recorded a Deep Cut Journey Cover with the Sons of Toto and Genesis Members
J ourney fans soon will get the chance to hear an updated version of one of the band’s deep cuts sung by none other than Steve Perry himself! The ex-Journey frontman has revealed that he’s recorded a new rendition of his old group’s 1986 song “It Could Have Been You” with the new group The Effect.
The track will be released as a digital single on Tuesday, May 7, and can be pre-saved now. The Effect is band that features guitarist Trevor Lukather, son of Toto’s Steve Lukather, as well as Phil Collins’ son Nic on drums, Toto keyboardist Steve Maggiora, and vocalist Emmett Stang.
[RELATED: The Effect Featuring Sons of Phil Collins and Toto’s Steve Lukather Come Closer to Releasing Debut Album]
Perry explained in a social media post how the collaboration came to be.
“In 1986 the Journey Raised on Radio record was released and in it was a song I’ve always felt was a diamond in the rough,” he noted. “I’ve known Trevor Lukather since he was 9 years old and he is a very gifted musician. One day we were talking about his new band, The Effect… He surprisingly mentioned ‘It Could Have Been You’ is one of his favorite tracks from that record, I told him I felt the same.”
Perry continued, “I then said, why don’t you record it? He asked if I would sing on it if they did, I said… ‘Of course my most precious!’ I must say, singing on their powerful track brought out a vocal experience in me from years ago!”
[RELATED: Former Journey Singer Steve Perry Shocked by Recent “Don’t Stop Believin” Milestone]
The legendary singer then noted that the “very powerful reimagined version” of “It Could Have Been You” will be available on May 7 via “all [socials] and streaming.”
Trevor Lukather Also Posted About the Collaboration
Trevor Lukather also told the story about how his band came to work with Perry on the track in his own social media post .
“Steve and I go way back. Other than my Pop, SP has been a mentor to me,” Trevor wrote. “When he heard The Effect, he called me and expressed how much he really loved what we were doing. It meant the world. On that same call, I started raving about a deep cut Journey tune ‘It Could Have Been You.’”
Lukather then explained that he asked Perry if he would sing on a version of the song if The Effect recorded it, “and he said yes.” The guitarist said the band then hit the studio to record the track with Stang laying down a lead vocal to “present to [Perry] our vision of what we had in mind.”
Lukather said he was thrilled at Perry’s enthusiastic reaction to hearing the playback of the track.
“His excitement that we could resurrect an overlooked Journey song with new life obviously connected to the pipes because Steve came in the next day and shook the house with his vocal performance,” he shared. “I think our neighbors thought it was the Northridge earthquake all over again.”
Lukather added, “The power of Steve’s vocals is on another level. One of a kind. That’s why he’s the GOAT.”
He concluded his note by thanking Perry “for not only for the honor, but for your belief in us and what we do. That is never taken for granted!”
Incidentally, Lukather also has a familial connection to Journey—he’s married to Jonathan Cain’s daughter Madison.

Yes, Blake Shelton Sings The New The Fall Guy Theme Song - Everything to Know (LISTEN)
Find out how Blake Shelton came to cover The Fall Guy theme song, “The Unknown Stuntman,” in the new film.
If you grew up in the '80s, then you lived in the heyday of action drama television shows. From the The A-Team and Knight Rider to The Greatest American Hero and The Fall Guy , all of them were based around a "case of the week" that leaned heavily on car chases, shootouts , and plenty of main character fisticuffs. Just about all of them also featured great theme songs with memorable melodies and lyrics that encapsulated the spirit of the show in just a few bars.

In The Fall Guy , Universal Picture's upcoming big screen revival of the classic series (out exclusively in theaters on May 3), the show's theme song also gets a glow up with country music superstar and The Voice alumni Blake Shelton providing his cover version of the song.
Does Blake Shelton Sing The Fall Guy Theme Song?
Yes, that is country legend Blake Shelton singing the updated version of The Fall Guy 's iconic theme song, "The Unknown Stuntman."
The new The Fall Guy movie isn't following in the original show's footsteps by having incredibly talented crooner and lead actor Ryan Gosling ( Barbie ) sing "The Unknown Stuntman." Rather, self-proclaimed fan of the TV series and authentic country crooner Blake Shelton has taken the reins of the theme song that plays over the film's final credits.
Director David Leitch told NBC Insider during the recent The Fall Guy press tour that the connection of artist and song came via the friendship between President of Music and Publishing at NBCUniversal Mike Knobloch and long-time The Voice judge, Shelton.
"Mike Knobloch is close to Blake, and Blake had sort of hinted like, 'Hey, if they want someone to redo the song...,' and we're like, 'Are you kidding, Blake ? Yes, please!'" Leitch revealed of how the interest was passed along to the filmmakers. "We leaned in and reached right back out and said, 'Let's redo it!' It's really exciting that he was a fan and that he came on board to update that classic."
What's the origin of The Fall Guy theme song, "The Unknown Stuntman"?
The Fall Guy series ran for five seasons and was one of those rare shows that boasted its leading man as the singer of its theme song too. Actor Lee Majors did double duty for the series playing Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as bounty hunter, and serving as the country crooner of the theme song, "The Unknown Stuntman."

While Majors does a pretty good job warbling the "autobiographical" lyrics of "The Unknown Stuntman," the singing gig was a one-off for the actor. Unlike other performers who straddled acting and the music world, Majors wasn't a professional singer. However, he was coerced into singing the theme song because the lyrics were from the perspective of Seavers, who sings about the thankless job of being a high profile stuntman doing all the dirty work but getting none of the rewards of the big name actors whom he doubles.
