I am really glad we did the best African safari for family provided by Voyage Kenya Tanzania Safari. Kenya and Tanzania were such beautiful countries. Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

Amazing experience!! best tour operator that deserves 10 stars!!Just returned from a 7-Day Tsavo West-Amboseli-Nakuru-Mara-Lodge tour (from Nairobi to Mombasa ) ended at Diani beach and had an incredible holiday and safari! I can't recommend CKC Tours and Travel highly enough. Manager John is very friendly, professional and helpful. I have booked a shared tour but ended up being just me for the last few days. The trip was amazing and very well organised with excellent hotel choices especially the various Sopa Lodges and the Killaguney Serena Lodge with nice rooms and delicious food . I saw the Big 5 and many more wonderful animals . My drivers were amazing at spotting them in the distance! The drivers also were very knowledgable and told me a lot about the animals and their country. The price of the tour is probably the best in Nairobi. Thank you CKC for making my dream come true ! 5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?

kenya safari price

Awe-inspiring wildlife moments, snow capped mountains rising high above the savanna and sumptuous safari lodges that appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a novel…your trip will be life-changing, but how much does a Kenya safari cost?

The experts at Extraordinary Journeys are here to help you plan an exceptional safari experience—and to clear up some of the opacity that surrounds Kenya safari prices, too.

The average cost of a Kenya safari

So, what is the average cost of a luxury Kenya safari?

As a baseline or starting point, you should plan to spend $1,000 per day, per person, based on two people sharing. This includes your accommodation, shared game drives, gourmet meals, drinks, various activities, park permits, those all-important sundowners, and ground or air transfers within Kenya. Budget additionally for international flights, visas, tips, exclusive upgrades and add-on activities.

Of course, Kenya safari prices fluctuate with seasonality and the exclusivity of the accommodation you choose. If you’re working within a finite budget, we recommend that you bring an open mind to the initial planning phase. This is when you will first chat to your Extraordinary Journeys’ regional travel specialist . Flexibility gives us some leeway to mix-and-match accommodation styles (described below) so we can make suggestions that reflect the very best value based on your wants and needs. You’ll then be in a position to gauge how much you want to spend on those incredible safari extras, like dreamy hot air balloon rides, heli-tours or a wilderness spa day.

Factors influencing Kenya safari prices

Many elements influence your Kenya safari cost, from seasonality to the booking window to accommodation type.

Save yourself the hours of research and work with a specialist from the get-go. Working with an expert who can custom design your safari will ensure you have the experience of your dreams while sticking to budget.

The time of year

Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but when it comes to how much a Kenya safari costs, your timing is consequential.

The calendar that travelers tend to plan around includes:

  • The Great Migration : July, August and September coincide with the greatest volume of migrating wildlife in Kenya. This is the busiest time of year, so expect to pay more.
  • Festive season: Rates rise as demand from folks and families traveling during winter break increases; December 20 through January 5.
  • Off-peak season: Going on safari during “ secret season ” often means enjoying perks and upgrades at no extra cost, if not softening Kenya safari prices outright thanks to promotional pricing. (Example: stay four nights, pay for three.)

For a month-by-month breakdown, consult The Best Time to Visit Kenya

Fly-in versus drive-in

Traveling by road between regions in Kenya is possible, but we don’t advise it. We love a good road trip but Kenya’s busy highways offer little in terms of charm. Conditions or obstacles can often turn a simple journey into an uncomfortably long experience. Our advice is to fly. After all, sometimes it’s not about saving dollars—it’s about maximizing your experience.

Lodging type

Where you lay your head at night has an impact on the average cost of a luxury Kenya safari. Your options are differentiated by:

  • Safari camps: Tented properties that vary from ultra-luxe to vintage, original-style camps. Higher-end properties may have a swimming or plunge pool, plumbing, Wi-Fi, interconnecting boardwalks and freestanding bathtubs. Minimalist camps may have bucket showers or long drop toilets.
  • Safari lodges: Fixed structures ranging from the rustic to the uber-glam. Expect creature comforts, refined amenities (spas, libraries, pools) and superb dining options.
  • Private conservancies: Reserve and national park accommodations tend to cater to larger hotels and mass market tourism. Alternatively, private conservancies restrict the number of guests and vehicles, and camps are typically boutique. In a conservancy, you’re paying for exclusivity—but you’ll avoid the crowds and get perks not offered in national parks, like night drive s and walking safaris .

The ideal safari booking window

More importantly, if you’re keeping a close eye on Kenya safari prices, consider booking early. Demand can be intense, especially in The Mara, so we suggest booking 12-to-18 months in advance. When inventory is lean and choices are limited, you may be forced to spend more than you initially anticipated.

Add-On Activities

Once you’ve factored $1,000 a day for your Kenya safari cost, you’ll have a better idea of what you want to spend on the fun à la carte activities:

  • Hot air balloon safari in The Mara : ~$600 per passenger.
  • Helicopter sightseeing /transfers: starting at $3,000.
  • Spa & massage: expect to pay less than services in the US.

Tips for saving on a Kenya safari

If you want to bring down the average cost of a Kenya safari, these are our best tips:

  • Book early: Book 12-to-18 months in advance to consider the best selection of accommodations.
  • Be flexible: Allow your Extraordinary Journeys’ specialist to find the best lodges and camps for you. (We really know our camps down to the details—like which have hairdryers or not!)
  • Travel outside of peak and festive season: There are some great deals  and perks to be had during the quieter seasons.
  • Portfolio options: Stay in camps that belong to the same portfolio collection where you may benefit from multi-booking incentives or long-stay discounts.

FAQ about Kenya safari costs

How much does a safari cost per day.

You will find itineraries being sold for as low as $300 per person, per night—but that price represents the floor of the market and includes a lot of driving. We do not recommend or sell these trips.

For a custom-created luxury safari, budget $1,000 per person, per night as a starting point. This will ensure an exceptional experience. We will plan all of the details, logistics, transfers and reservations, so you can travel worry-free. We also offer 24-hour in-destination support that’s always just a call or DM away. Travel can be unpredictable (that’s part of the beauty of it), but we’re here to ensure you’re taken care of no matter what.

How much money should I take on safari?

Your budget of $1,000 a day will cover game drives, lodgings, park permits, meals, drinks and various activities. This means that your safari will be a more or less cashless experience, so you’ll just need to bring money for tips. If spending time in Nairobi , it’s helpful to know that credit cards are widely accepted in shops, galleries and restaurants. You may only need a little cash for local markets.

Should I bring cash on safari?

Yes, you need to bring cash (US dollars) on safari for tipping.

The Extraordinary Journeys pre-departure team will supply you with a tipping chart but typically, we recommend $30 to $50 per day, per person. Be mindful of the condition of your currency; avoid crumpled or torn bills.

Are safaris worth it?

We feel Kenyan safaris offer fantastic value, especially when compared to the cost of a luxury trip in Europe or North America. It’s also worth taking the value of sustainable travel into account. Many of our camps and lodges are located in conservancies—adding environmental and social-economic clout to every dollar you spend there. The conservancies help to fund re-wilding, conservation and community uplift—efforts that are definitely worth supporting with your wallet.

Checklist for a Kenya Tanzania Self-Drive Safari

Known as the birthplace of the African safari , Kenya is renowned as one of Africa’s top safari destinations, with incredible safari adventures like the Great Wildebeest Migration which stars millions of wildebeest, stunning scenery, and beautiful beaches, all of which contribute to the excellent safari experience that visitors have come to expect. Offering all types of safaris ranging from the Big five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhino), memorable birding experiences, and exploratory hiking trails, to mention but a few, Kenya offers the most exquisite, but yet most affordable safaris to travelers from all over the world.

Kenya Safari cost

Kenya offers all kinds of safaris ranging from luxury to midrange and budget African safaris, each with its distinctive package of services and benefits. Nevertheless, every Kenya safari package is designed to suit all kinds of travelers whether they are budget travelers or luxury travelers. However, when planning for Kenya Safari cost, one ought to know that Kenya is not a cheap safari destination.

Given the tourism experience Kenya has gained over the many years, Kenya safari prices are generally higher than in other African countries. A safari in Kenya might be expensive and not even luxurious. However, as there are so many ways of killing a rat, there are various ways of making sure that your Kenya safari is less costly but so fulfilling.

More so, a range of factors plays a role in your Kenya safari cost, including your safari budget, when you would like to travel, and where you want to go. Most visitors often inquire about the approximate cost of a Masai Mara safari and Amboseli National Park safari, as well as whether affordable Kenya safari packages are available. Here is a breakdown of our Kenya safari costs;

Budget Kenya Safari cost

Most of us want to save money wherever possible, and spending hundreds of dollars a day to look at animals may seem excessive. A quick-fix three-day safari from Nairobi to the Masai Mara , Tsavo, or Amboseli national parks can be had for just about US\$250 all in for a Kenya budget safari. Meanwhile, this price includes transportation from Nairobi, lodging, meals, and two game drives. It may, however, not include park admission. Well, sounds great, but there are a couple of major caveats that should make you approach bargain deals like this with extreme caution.

To begin with, most of these budget safaris are extremely rushed, and a three-day point-to-point safari leaving and returning to Nairobi will almost certainly only give you one day on safari.

This type of safari is almost always conducted in battered old minibusses that are uncomfortable and provide poor or obstructed views. This is especially true if the vehicle is fully loaded, and more so, half of the passengers may not have a window seat at all. These vehicles are frequently old, and breakdowns are common. Due to breakdowns, it is common to lose a significant amount of safari time – or even all of it.

Second, and this is not always a bad thing, accommodation on a budget safari will be in small dome tents set up on public campsites with no facilities other than a tap and a basic toilet block. Still, meals are prepared by the entire group and are frequently not what was promised. These safaris are always held in the main national parks and reserves, never in conservancies (from which they are banned).

kenya safari price

Mid Range Kenya Safari Cost

A multiday, Kenya mid-range safari in some of the big game parks and reserves such as the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Reserve among others, will cost you around US$250-300 per person, per day. This includes three reasonable meals per day (full-board basis) and lodging in a comfortable if often uneventful, safari lodge or camp.

A mid-range safari in Kenya will also include park entry fees, which are typically around US$70 per person/day for the main parks (although at this time, all park fees had been reduced by 50% in response to the Covid-19 crisis), and a safari in a shared vehicle. This vehicle could be a high-quality, open-sided jeep with only a couple of other passengers, or it could be an overcrowded minibus.

Luxury Kenya Safari Cost

This is the best Kenya safari you can be sure of enjoying! If you want a better safari experience (and you should aim as high as you can), you should consider an exclusive safari in one of the incredible wildlife conservancies. These are community or privately run wildlife conservation areas that frequently border the borders of most of Kenya’s main national parks and are run for the benefit of local communities as well as wildlife conservation.

A visit to one of these conservancies guarantees you one of the best safaris in the world. The entire experience will be very exclusive, with only a few other safari vehicles present. You will stay in luxury (but not over-the-top) safari tents and dine at world-class restaurants (with most alcoholic drinks included in the rates).

The cost will include a fantastic wildlife guide and safaris in specially designed open-sided vehicles and these vehicles are frequently reserved exclusively for your group. All conservation fees and park entry fees are also included in the price.

So, how much are we discussing? At a quiet time of year, expect to pay at least $350 per person, per night. However, for truly exceptional places with the best guides and wildlife experiences, prices can range from US$600 to $1,000 per night. And at these prices, you’ll be glad that gin and tonic are included!

Kenya Safari cost

A solo safari is an excellent compromise between a budget safari and something more customized. Here, simply rent a good 4WD jeep with a driver (it’s also possible to go alone, but for safety reasons, we’d recommend having a driver; after all, it rarely adds much to the overall cost).

Throw a tent, a camping gas stove, and a pile of food in the back and you’re ready to go. Also, ensure you carry a map. You’ll be in charge of your itinerary and will be able to change it as you go (accommodation bookings aside). It will be far more comfortable than sitting in a minibus with a dozen other people, and you can alternate between nights spent camping and nights spent in quality lodges.

The cost of renting a jeep with a driver is typically around $150-200 per day, which includes fuel and the majority of driver expenses. You will be expected to pay for your lodging, food, and park admission.

This is a particularly rewarding mode of transportation for a family. However, most conservancies will not allow you to bring your vehicle. If you travel this route and intend to spend time in a conservancy, conservancy camp staff will meet you at the entrance and transfer you to one of their vehicles for the duration of your stay. Normally, your driver will be provided with lodging while he waits.

Flight Kenya costs

Kenya is well connected with international flights from Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as various other parts of the world; however, flight distances to Nairobi are typically long, adding to the overall cost of your Kenya safari. For visitors wondering how to get to Kenya, the majority of international flights arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

Tourists from the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, India, and Canada must typically obtain a Kenya visa. Visitors to Kenya can fly into Nairobi (NBO), Mombasa (MBA), Kisumu (KIS), and Eldoret (ELD) for safaris, safari lodges, and Kenya beach vacations (EDL).

Flights to Kenya can be costly due to the length of the journey. Moreover, flights from the United Kingdom or the United States can vary in price depending on the dates of travel and the airline.

Best time to visit kenya for a safari.

For an unparalleled wildlife safari experience combined with the perfect beach getaway, the best time to visit Kenya for safari is generally from early July to late September. This timeframe aligns with Kenya’s dry season, which also extends across East Africa. Notably, it coincides with the Great Migration, a breathtaking spectacle where vast herds of wildebeest and zebras traverse the Mara River on their journey from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Additional favorable months for a Kenya safari include June and the stretch between December and February. Even October and November, characterized by Kenya’s short rains, provide a suitable window for safari enthusiasts.

Conversely, April and May mark Kenya’s long rainy season, resulting in potentially impassable roads. Despite this, in parks and well-equipped regions, this period presents a unique opportunity for budget-friendly safaris. The lush greenery and awe-inspiring topography during the long rainy season contribute to a distinct and enchanting safari experience. Planning a visit during this time allows for a more economical safari adventure while reveling in the vibrant landscapes that Kenya has to offer.

Where to visit on a Kenya Safari

Our Kenya safari tours will take you to the most famous parks in Kenya and Africa at large including the Masai Mara the where the largest animal migration; the Wildebeests Migration also known as ‘ The Great Migration ’ happens every year seeing thousands upon thousands of visitors who stream the area to witness the wildlife pilgrimage.

Apart from the Masai Mara we also arrange safari tours to the Amboseli National Park famous for the Postcard views of large elephants with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, but also the Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Park of the legendary man-eating lions. Other places of interest where our Kenya safaris will take you include Lake Nakuru National Park and other rift valley lake including Lake Baringo , Lake Elmenteita and the Lake Bogoria where you will be amazed by the colorful flocks of flamingoes among other aquatic and non-aquatic birds.

At Safari Desire we offer mainly private tailor made safari tours in Kenya and can therefore plan tours to other less travelled national parks and private game reserves like; the Olpejeta Conservancy , Meru National Park , Lewa Conservancy and other game reserves like Taita Hills , Ngutuni Wildlife Conservancy as well as Lumo Conservancy closer to Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and the Kenya Coast in general.

With offices in both Nairobi and Mombasa, we offer Kenya safaris from Mombasa, as well as Nairobi Safari tours, with some tours starting at Nairobi and ending at Mombasa or Diani Beach; like our affordable 14 Days Kenya safari and Beach holiday .

AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kenya is located in East Africa and encompasses classic savannah, mountain highlands, colourful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and pristine coral reefs. The Masai Mara is world renowned for the “ Great Mammal Migration ” and sightings of the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). The soda lake known as Lake Nakuru lights up with pink flamingos, whilst the Amboseli National Park offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Kenya is home to Africas second highest mountain, whilst the Tsavo and Samburu game reserves offer rewarding safari experiences. Kenya boasts unforgettable bush and beach vacations with destinations such as Diani Beach providing the perfect setting for some well-deserved relaxation.

Kenya is a year-round destination for both safari and beach holidays.

The main tourist seasons tie in with the rainfall patterns: the biggest influxes of visitors are in December – January and July – August .

Dry-season travel has a number of advantages, not least of which is the greater visibility of wildlife as animals are concentrated along the diminishing watercourses. July to September is probably the best period, overall, for game-viewing, with early September almost certain to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

October, November, and March are the months with the clearest seas for snorkeling and diving. In the long rains, the mountain parks are occasionally closed, as the muddy tracks are undrivable. But the rainy seasons shouldn’t deter travel unduly: the rains usually come only in short afternoon or evening cloudbursts, and the landscape is strikingly green and fresh even if the skies may be cloudy. There are bonuses, too: fewer other tourists, reduced prices and often perfect light for photography.

Renowned for its classic savanna safaris, Kenya is a beautiful country with deserts, alpine snows, forests, open plains, colorful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and coral reefs. The wildlife safaris have always been the top attraction in Kenya. This huge wilderness is home to the most impressive wildlife spectacle on earth; The great migration. The great migration is a pilgrimage of millions of wildebeest and zebra in search of new pastures. The herds are followed by vast numbers of predators, including lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Other activities to be experienced in Kenya include trekking Mount Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara and snorkeling in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.

Masai Mara National Park

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the top tourist attractions in Kenya and the country’s most popular game park. Each year the Masai Mara National Reserve is visited by thousands of tourists who come here to watch the exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest. The “Great Migration” takes place every year from July to October when millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park located close to the Tanzania border at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. ‘Must do’ attractions in the Amboseli National Park include meeting the Maasai people and witnessing the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is just a short drive from the center of Nairobi with only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the metropolis. It is the only national park in the world to be found within the precincts of a capital city. Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Despite its proximity to the city and the relatively small size of the park, Nairobi National Park boasts a large and varied wildlife population including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.Malindi provides a very nice introduction to the coastal tourist attractions in Kenya with its extensive coral reefs and beautiful beaches. There are surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports. The Malindi Marine National Park and nearby Watamu Marine National Park have protected areas with beautiful beaches, clear water, turtles and very colorful fish. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve harbors elephants and more than 200 species of birds.

Mombasa is Kenya's main tourist destination. It is on the eastern coastline of Kenya, bordering the Indian Ocean which has made it a popular destination for its beaches. Mombasa is a place where both history and progress are greatly valued, where a busy harbor existence is lived at its own unique, tropical pace. Mombasa offers a diverse marine life, world-class hotels, and friendly atmosphere. There is a tropical climate all year and it is a great destination filled with activities for all ages.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as the ‘Place of Light’. Its ragged series of peaks are crowned with snow, and its slopes are covered with forest. The 5199 meter (17,057 ft) high summit is a difficult technical climb, several lowers peaks, however, are an easy destination for any fit trekker. The majority of animals live lower down on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here there is more vegetation and the climate is less extreme. Various species of monkeys, several antelopes, tree hyrax, porcupines and some larger animals such as elephant and buffalo all live in the forest.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a very peaceful national park in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It attracts wildlife because of the Uaso Nyiro River that runs through it and the mixture of forest and grassland vegetation. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile. Samburu also offers a sublime birding experience.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a small park named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It is unique among Kenya’s wildlife parks, as you are allowed to walk or cycle without a guide. There’s dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, gorges and basalt columns. The national park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, though many are few in number. Examples of little-seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. As the oldest living town in Kenya, Lamu Town has retained all the charm and character built up over centuries. There are no roads on Lamu Island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya and in the world. Due to its size, the park was divided into Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The Tsavo West has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape while Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling. Tsavo National Park is the ideal destination in Kenya for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The park is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust-red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a very shallow lake in central Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts vast quantities of flamingos, sometimes more than one million at once. Often called the greatest bird spectacle on earth, the flamingos are one of Kenya’s top attractions. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, and game drives.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!

Kenya Wildlife Safari

8 days | spot the big five and spend a night with the maasai.

Giraffes gather in field in Masai Mara

Immerse yourself in the animal kingdom on this eight-day trip. Veer off the beaten track to seek out elephants, hippos, leopards and lions against the impressive backdrop of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. Then, staying in the world-famous Masai Mara, deepen your understanding of Kenyan culture by experiencing tribal life in Loita Hills as you’re welcomed into the homes of the Maasai warriors and their proud village community. Join this perspective-shifting journey of unforgettable moments and memorable wildlife encounters.

Trip overview

  • Spend the night in a Maasai village to learn about life from community elders, visit a widows’ community and maybe even learn to throw a spear.
  • Venture into the incredible Masai Mara National Reserve for a full-day game drive in an open-top 4WD, looking for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and more.
  • An early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park might be your best chance of seeing black and white rhinoceroses in the flesh.
  • Take a cooking class in a small village and learn some Kenyan recipes, then share your creations at a camp dinner under the stars.
  • You'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your trip, travelling with a crew of three experienced locals – a leader, driver and cook.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Patinaai Osim Community Care Organisation. Donations support their livelihood programs which help indigenous Maasai women identify alternative income-generating activities to support their families.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have drop-down windows, which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • In Loita Hills you will stay in a secure bush camp with basic facilities and cold showers. There is no Wi-Fi or upgrades available but the rewards of experiencing Maasai culture should more than make up for the lack of creature comforts.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or beat the morning traffic on long travel days.

Jambo! Welcome to Kenya. Your trip begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive with time to spare before the meeting, consider getting to know the city on an Urban Adventure like the ‘Nairobi Experience’. This optional 4-hour tour is a great way to get a feel for Nairobi, and includes lunch at a local restaurant. After the welcome meeting, perhaps join your new travel companions for an optional group dinner.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD55

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Unfortunately, petty crime has become common in Nairobi and recently arrived visitors to the capital can often make for tempting targets. Your trip leader will verse you in a few worthwhile precautions at the welcome meeting, but generally, you should get local advice on where to walk and keep valuables in a neck wallet or money belt at all times. Stay aware even when inside, as thieves and pickpockets have been known to operate indoors. There's no need to be paranoid, but appearing vigilant is a great deterrent to would-be thieves.

For more information on Urban Adventure options in Nairobi go to urbanadventures.com/destination/nairobi-tours or speak to an Intrepid booking agent.

Drive north-west past splendid views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Elementaita to Lake Nakuru National Park. Situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a great location for spotting wildlife, which you will do in an early morning game drive tomorrow. For now, head to a nearby village with your leader. This is a fantastic opportunity to interact with the local folk and get a feel for everyday life here. Enjoy a cooking class and return later in the evening to share the results for dinner.

  • Camping (with facilities) (1 night)
  • Lake Nakuru - Village Walk & Cooking Class

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your camp, outside the park, is well-situated and has flush toilets and showers. Accommodation upgrades and Wi-Fi are not available.

Wake early for a light breakfast and head into the Lake Nakuru National Park for a game drive in the overland vehicle. Lake Nakuru is home to rhinos, and there will be a good chance of spotting and photographing one of these magnificent beasts. Return to camp for lunch before driving to your camp near Lake Naivasha. One of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha has floating islands of papyrus reeds and a border of flat-topped acacias. It's also home to a healthy population of hippos and a tremendous variety of birds.

  • Lake Nakuru - Overland Vehicle Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

There will be an opportunity to access an ATM and visit a market today to stock up on items for the remainder of the trip. Your campsite tonight is basic, with showers and flush toilets. There are no upgrades available at our campsite this evening. Wi-fi is available at the bar.

Enjoy a free day to choose from a variety of optional activities available around Lake Naivasha. Perhaps venture to Hell's Gate National Park, which boasts beautiful cliffs, gorges, rock towers, volcanoes and a range of geothermal phenomena. Another great choice is to take a boat trip across Lake Naivasha – perhaps the best way to take in the atmosphere of this lush area. If you're looking for something active, why not hire a bike for the day and make some of your own discoveries, venturing beyond the cacti and olive trees.

  • Lake Naivasha - Bike hire - USD12
  • Lake Naivasha - Boat trip - KES4000
  • Lake Naivasha - Game Walk in Crater Lake Game Sanctuary (entrance fee) - USD50
  • Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate NP (Game Drive) - USD65

The Crater Lake game walk, Hell's Gate National Park and bike hire optional activities will also incur a USD 50 transport fee per vehicle.

The Lake Naivasha crater lake game sanctuary walk will also incur a guide fee of USD 25 per guide.

The bike hire will also require an additional USD 26 fee to enter the National Park plus an additional 250 Kenyan shillings to be permitted to ride the bike within the park.

Depart Lake Naivasha, making a short stop in Narok to do a spot of food shopping. Continue to Loita Hills, home of the Maasai people, stopping for lunch on the way. You’ll be camping at Tepesua Village, which is known for championing Maasai women’s health and education. When you arrive, be welcomed by traditional Maasai warrior song and dance, then your host will explain the details of Maasai warrior training. Take a walk to the community village which was founded to alleviate the poverty of Maasai widows, who traditionally are not allowed to inherit property. The village offers support, safety and economic growth through the ‘Tepesua Widows Income Project’. Spend the evening around a campfire and learn more about their age-old culture and traditions as you share stories with Maasai warriors into the night.

  • Camping (with basic facilities) (1 night)
  • Loita Hills - Cultural talk and village visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Hot bucket showers are available in the morning. Wi-fi is not available and only minimal upgrades are on offer at tonight’s bush camp.

Today you’ll travel from Loita Hills to Masai Mara. Most of the road there is tarmacked, but the final 5 km is dusty when dry and muddy when wet. The Masai Mara is the quintessential African experience, with sparse open plains, dramatic skies and some of the world's most tremendous animals. After setting up camp, sit down to some lunch. Then it's time to jump in 4WDs and go for a game drive through the wilderness of the Mara.

  • Masai Mara - 4x4 Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Your camp tonight does not have Wi-Fi. Room upgrades are possible, subject to availability, and should be paid for in Kenyan Shilling. Please speak to your leader for more information.

Venture into the Masai Mara National Reserve for a full day's game drive in 4WDs. You'll explore this diverse environment and most likely see a multitude of wildlife. An optional balloon ride over the Mara at sunrise is available today. If you have pre-booked this activity, you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site for a safety briefing from your pilot. Then, you will glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, to get some amazing photo opportunities. Sometimes you will ascend, getting an overview of the enormity of the plains and of the early morning movements of the teeming herds. After landing, you'll be treated to a bush breakfast, then meet up with the rest of the group while on their game drive.

  • Masai Mara National Reserve - Balloon ride (from price) - USD500

The balloon ride must be booked in advance to secure a place, which you can do through an Intrepid booking agent. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground you are welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited. If you participate in this activity you will miss the morning half of the included game drive.

Say goodbye to the open expanses of the African bush and return to the bustling metropolis of Nairobi. On arrival, you'll be dropped at a centrally located hotel, and with no accommodation provided for tonight, you are free to leave at any time. If you would like to extend your stay in Nairobi, we’ll happily organise additional accommodation (subject to availability).

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

It's important not to book any outgoing international flights for earlier than 6 pm today.

Kenya Safari Cost (A Detailed Guide With Examples)

kenya safari price

If you are anything like me you must have wondered how much a safari in Kenya costs. I’ll try to answer this question to the best of my ability and give you a few examples along the way.

The average cost of a safari in Kenya is USD $3000 for a 10-day Safari in Kenya. Budget safaris cost around $1700  while Luxury Safaris would cost as much as $10,000. These amounts do NOT include international flights, visa fees, and medical insurance. All of these safaris will have wildlife viewing and some will include time at the beach . Let me break down what you expect to pay when coming on a Kenyan Safari and different examples of tours and their cost structures.  I have lived in Kenya all my life and have visited many of the popular national parks in Kenya and this will inform the recommendations I give here.

Here is a short table summarizing the cost structures for the Safaris in Kenya.

Kindly Note: I have never had to use tours and travel companies that have organized tours in my visits to the National parks in Kenya. This is because it has always been more logical for us as Kenyans to use our own vehicles to visit the parks since its more economical and all of my visits to the different national parks could be completed within a day. This means that my advice will be a bit limited and may be overlooking some aspects. To compensate for this, I did almost a week of research when preparing for this article and contacted the tours and travels companies mentioned below to get an accurate picture of the exact costs of doing a safari in Kenya.

How Much Budget Safaris in Kenya Cost

Cost: $1,000 – $1,700.

kenya safari price

Most budget safaris will be bare-bones and will include the essentials  that would constitute an ok safari. Accommodation for these types of trips would usually be in basic tents with basic amenities like a shower and bathroom. If you will be booked in hotels they will usually be budget hotels with no frills.

As an example, Check out this Budget Safari by Intrepid Travel that is restricted to 18 to 29-year-olds .  It’s a budget Tour That takes you on a tour of the popular Maasai Mara and Serengeti for 9 days. Most of the nights will be spent in tents and the tour is a group tour where you share vehicles.

What they include

The amenities usually included in these kinds of budget safaris include:

  • Meals : Breakfast Lunch and Supper
  • Transport: By Four-wheel drive safari vehicles
  •   Accommodation :  In tented camps and budget hotels
  • Activities : Game drives in the national parks,   and sometimes will include visits to indigenous people like the Maasai villages.
  • Park fees : budget safaris usually include park entry fees into the cost of the safari and you will not need to worry about paying for them.
  • A professional driver/guide :   good safari companies hire professional drivers who also act as guides for your safari.
  • A ll transportation :  once the tour starts.
  • Drinking water :  this is an essential one since, as I have written in this article it is not advisable for foreigners to drink tap water in Kenya.

What they don’t include

Due to the fact that these are budget safaris, they would have very few frills and  would NOT include the following

  • Transfers to and from the airport:  transfers from international airports to the start of your Safari would usually require an additional payment.
  • Accommodation before and after the Safari Starts: If you will be arriving the day before your safari starts or planning to stay one or two days after your safari ends you will need to pay for the accommodation yourself.
  • Local Flights : while flights are very convenient in helping you get around Kenya they are also not cheap and would not be included in most budget safaris.
  • Special Meals & Drinks :  on some occasions, you may need to cater for your own drink bills or pay for any special meals that may not be within the budget of your safari.

How Much Mid Range Safaris in Kenya Cost

Cost: usd $ 1,800 – $3,900.

kenya safari price

Most mid-range safaris in Kenya will include time at the beach.  They would come with a lot more comfort than budget safaris and are more suited for the average tourist. Accommodation is usually more comfortable and is located in hotels that are more premium and comfortable. Some would also include cultural interactions with the locals eg. visiting a Maasai Village or interacting with the local communities near the parks or beaches.

The amenities usually included in these kinds of  mid-range safaris include:

kenya safari price

  • Meals : Breakfast Lunch and Supper for the length of your safari
  • Transport: By 4×4 safari vehicles and sometimes some flights are included
  •   Accommodation : In hotels and/or well-equipped camps
  • Game drives in less crowded vehicles
  • Sometimes it will include visits to indigenous people but the Maasai villages.
  • Visit to the Kenyan Coast
  • Park fees : Usually included
  • A professional driver/guide :   Essential for local knowledge and helping to spot difficult-to-spot animals.
  • All transportation :  and would usually include airport transfers
  • Drinking water :

Even though you may be paying more for your safari than a budget traveler, there are few things that would not be included

Best of East Africa

  • Accommodation before and after the Safari Starts: you would still need to make your own arrangements if you will be arriving earlier than the scheduled time of the safari or spending a few days in Kenya after your safari is complete
  • Flights : While some flights may be included, most Kenyan safaris would still have a lot of overland travel in a 4×4 Safari vehicle.
  • Some drinks and meals : Since many mid-range safaris would be accommodated in nice hotels and budget homes you would expect to find better food and drinks but there will be a limitation to this.

How Much Luxury Safaris in Kenya Cost

kenya safari price

Cost USD $4,000 – $ 13,000

These are the top-of-the-line safari experiences and would be some of the most exclusive and high ticket Safaris.  They offer a high degree of customization and would even allow you to determine what kinds of activities you would want to have in your Safari. Accommodation would usually be in five-star hotels and lodges that are exclusive and picturesque. These would definitely include interactions with the local culture if that’s something you’re interested in and their interactions would be more intimate and exclusive.

Since these are the most expensive safaris you expect to have in Kenya,  they would not hold anything back in terms of the amenities provided. An example of what you would expect in these safaris include:

  • International Flights (At an Extra Fee): While other safaris would not offer international flights, luxury tour experiences would include international flights but at an additional cost to you. The benefit of this is that you do not have to hassle with trying to find tickets to get you to Kenya.
  • English-Speaking Resident Tour Managers and Local Guides: These guides would be more refined than any of the other tiers and would be better trained to handle you as a tourist.
  • Private Vehicle & Guides: These luxury safaris usually come in private vehicles and would not be shared with other tourists who you do not know
  • Luxury rooms with freestanding bathtubs
  • Additional connecting bedroom for children
  • Fully open floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Wraparound private decking area and infinity pool overlooking the river
  • Private vehicle and safari guide
  • Private lounge and dining area
  • Exquisite meals freshly-prepared by an in-suite chef
  • Fully stocked private bar with premium drinks
  • Airport Meet and Greet with Private Transfers: Unlike other safaris that would expect you to meet in a predefined location. luxury safaris would organize someone to pick you up from the airport.
  • Luggage Handling :  luxury safaris will handle your luggage for you and they usually hire staff dedicated to helping you carry any heavy luggage.
  • Breakfast in Bed: Since the accommodations that you will be using will be  5-star and high-end, things like breakfast in bed are not uncommon.
  • Your Choice of Activity : in some of the luxury safaris in Kenya, You get to decide what kinds of activities you would like on your safari and custom-design the experiences.
  • Internet Access: Many safari camps and lodges are located in very remote areas that do not usually have good connectivity.  However, luxury safari destinations would go out of their way to provide decent internet connectivity.
  • Laundry Service

Experience the finest game viewing, enjoying five-star hospitality in the heart of the bush at luxurious safari accommodations, including a private A&K tented site, and exploring three of Kenya’s iconic safari areas: Amboseli National Park, Laikipia Plateau, and Masai Mara Game Reserve.

NOTE: I have no affiliation with A&K. I just thought they were worth recommending. I reached out to their team for information about pricing for this article and they were very helpful.

Will I Enjoy a Budget Safari

So the question you may be asking yourself is, Will I enjoy a budget Safari? You may not have the budget for any safari that costs more than $1700 and you must be also counting the cost of international flights and other additional costs like travel insurance.

The answer is yes. Although budget safaris in Kenya would not have all the bells and whistles that come with safaris that are more high-end, you will get to see animals and experience similar landscapes and sceneries as those who will be paying several thousand dollars more . The only difference will be that your accommodation will be a lot more modest and your transport a bit less fancy.

The thing that you will need to be more careful about is what kind of company you book your budget safari with. You may be hunting for a good bargain but end up with a truly horrendous experience if you don’t take time to check the reputation of the safari company you intend to use.

Please take some time to read the detail guide I wrote about how to choose a safari company for your African Safari . it contains a very useful framework to help you choose a company that will give you the kind of safari you are expecting .

Also, Look for online reviews of the travel company you intend to use on independent sites like Trustpilot. Also, read about the kinds of experiences that people like you have encountered on the exact safari you’re thinking of going for.

Are Luxury Safaris Worth It?

Another thing you may be wondering is whether Luxury safaris are worth their price.  I have never been to a luxury safari experience and my opinion may be skewed but here it is:

While luxury safari experiences are extraordinary,  I feel that you would achieve a somewhat similar level of comfort on a mid-range safari without having to spend all that money for a luxury safari. If you have the budget for it I would highly recommend going on a luxury safari since it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Masai Mara Safari Cost

Most plan safaris will include the Maasai Mara in their itineraries . This makes Maasai Mara one of the most popular safari destinations and also one of the most expensive to visit especially during the High season. You will find the  Maasai Mara in the itineraries of Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury Safaris.

It would be difficult to place an exact price on how much it will cost just to visit the Mara since most companies bundle the Mara with other parks and you can find trips to the Mara on all tiers on the budget line.

The differences emerge in the kinds of accommodation each type of safari offers to its guests.

Budget safaris who book their guests in low-cost camps in the Maasai Mara or outside the park.

Mid-range safaris on the other hand who book their guests in lodges and tented camps that offer more amenities than budget camps.

Luxury safaris, on the other hand, will book their guests in the most exclusive and comfortable lodges within the Maasai Mara. The Sanctuary Olonana(picture below), for instance, is located on the banks of the Mara River and has an exclusive view of beautiful stretches of the park.

kenya safari price

Amboseli NP Safari Cost

Just like the Maasai Mara , Amboseli National Park is also very popular and would be included in many safari itineraries. I’m not able to give an exact amount of how much you expect to spend when visiting the Amboseli National Park but here is what I found,

You should expect to spend slightly more than the average tourist who visits the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru National Park since this park is slightly out of the way from the Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru Circuit . To save time you may have to take a flight to Amboseli and this will add to the cost of visiting the park.

Most Affordable National Parks in Kenya

Most affordable parks in Kenya are the ones that are near major cities.  With these parks, you do not need to spend your nights in Safari lodges or hotels only catering to tourists. this, therefore, reduces the biggest cost to your safari experience:  accommodation. If you are on a tight budget here are the national parks we should consider visiting in Kenya:

1.  The Nairobi National Park

Located just a few minutes from the Nairobi Central Business District,  Nairobi National Park is ideal if you are on a very tight budget and/or strapped for time.

You can spend your night in one of Nairobi’s hotels and visit the park using a rental vehicle. This will greatly reduce your cost and you would not need to use a Safari company for this.

I did a Self Drive of the Nairobi National Park  and recorded my experience you can watch it in the video below

2. Lake Nakuru National Park

Located a few minutes from Nakuru town,  this is another National Park you should visit if you are on a tight budget.

You do not need to use a safari company since you can access the Park using a saloon rental vehicle and can find accommodation within Nakuru town in a regular Hotel.

It’s important for me to mention here that Lake Nakuru National Park is not very large a nd can be viewed entirely in one day.

Because of this, you may also want to combine it with a hike in Hell’s Gate National Park which does not have a lot of animals but does have beautiful sceneries and beautiful water cut gorges.

Most Expensive National Parks in Kenya

The most expensive national parks in Kenya are the ones located in the most remote areas.

This is because getting you as a traveler to those locations will cost a lot more than taking you to the more popular parks that have better-developed infrastructure.

In addition to this, the logistics of ensuring that you are comfortable in these remote parks makes it more expensive per day than some of the more high-frequented parks.  Some of the most expensive national parks in Kenya are:

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu national reserve is located quite a long way off from the popular safari circuit and this makes it a more remote park. I tried looking for proper information on pricing and the best I could find was $600 per night for one of the hotels there.

Is using a Tour Company cheaper ?

One of the things you may be wondering about is whether using a Tours and Travel Company will be cheaper for you when going on a safari in Kenya.

using a safari company is not necessarily cheaper than traveling on your own because these companies help in reducing the hassle of organizing all aspects of your safari yourself.

You will be billed for this service through a higher total cost of a safari than if you organize it yourself.  This makes traveling with a Tours and travels company more expensive than traveling independently and planning your safari on your own .

kenya safari price

This means that if you are keen on spending the least amount of money on your Safari in Kenya,  avoiding tours and travels companies will be a good idea.

At this point, I have to warn you that although it is possible to plan your safari yourself and not use a tour company, it may not be very advisable since you will have to contend with all the variables organizing a good African safari have.

What’s worse is that you may end up paying more than you would have paid an organized safari company. This is because you may not get the special rates and discounts safari companies receive due to the fact that they are larger customers who have the advantage of volume and high-frequency purchases.

In addition to this, As you saw in the video of my visit to Nairobi National Park,  you may end up having a lousy experience since you will not have the advantage of local knowledge and connections. I didn’t get to see as many animals as was possible at the Nairobi National park since I didn’t have a guide and I was just driving around hoping to follow someone who looked like they knew where they were going.

Most Expensive time to go on Safari

One of the most expensive times to go on safari is during the peak season of late June to late September. This is because this is the best time to see wildlife and is also the time when the great migration is happening in the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Most national parks in Kenya have a lot of tourists during this time and you’ll be competing for the few available rooms in the hotels and lodges .

The Most Affordable time to go on Safari in Kenya

You can get the biggest savings if you visit Kenya in the rainy seasons of October to November and March to June.  Most of the national parks will have very wet conditions and these are not normally very ideal for spotting animals.

The downside to this is the fact that you may not see as many animals as you would expect and, even worse, could get stuck in the mud in one of the national parks.

Alternatives to A Kenya Safari

In my research, I found that safaris to South Africa are cheaper than the ones in Kenya and you may want to consider the southern part of Africa if you are on a tight budget.

A number of the parks in South Africa have paved roads and would be easily doable with a rental car. I don’t know very much about South African safaris and you will need to do a bit of research to establish whether this would be kind of safari experience you’re looking for.

Other Expenses that add to your total Safari Budget

The price you pay to the Tours and travel companies will not be the only cost you are going to incur when coming to Kenya for your Safari

  • Flights: Flights will form a significant portion of your jungle safari budget and he will need to put them into consideration when planning your Safari. Booking early will help in getting the best cost savings and you can check out International Flight Deals on Skyscanner
  • Vaccinations: You need to vaccinate yourself against common illnesses here in Kenya. Diseases like malaria are common and you need to prepare yourself by getting the necessary shots and prescriptions if you have any medical condition.
  • Travel Insurance: Arguably the most important investment when going on safari,  it is important that you make a good insurance policy that protects you from any risks that you may encounter on your safari. I have written a post on what is the best travel insurance for Kenya and you can read it here .
  • Extra Accommodation: You may arrive a day before your safari begins or spend an extra day before your flight is scheduled to leave and you will need to pay for this accommodation.
  • Gifts and Souvenirs: You probably want to carry gifts with you when going back home to share with your friends and family.  If you have a long list of friends and family, the total cost of buying these souvenirs will cost a pretty penny.
  • Time on the Beach: as I mentioned earlier,  time on the beach may not be part of your safari package. If you are keen on visiting the beach, you will need to factor in how much it’s going to cost you to spend time in the hotels at the Kenyan coast and your fare to get there.

A Final Word

As you prepare for your trip to Africa, I would like to recommend a few products that would help make your life easier.

  • Shoes: I recommend that you check the Keen Hiking shoes . I have written an extensive article on the best shoes for an African safari and this shoe checks all the boxes for things you should look for when choosing a shoe for Africa. ( Check out the Keen Hiking Shoes on Amazon )
  • Camera: If you are not big on photography, I would not advise you to buy a brand new camera for your African Adventure. Good cameras can be expensive and buying a camera you will not use is not a good use of your limited budget. I advise that you rent a camera instead and Lens Rentals have a great Safari Camera Kit perfect for someone traveling to Africa. If you are thinking of getting into photography, then you can invest in a new camera but before you do, check out my pick for the best Safari Camera for a Beginner like Me
  • Information About Africa: I have created a YouTube channel that focuses on things about traveling to Africa that only Africans can tell you about. Check out the channel for insights about African culture and things you can do as a traveler to optimize your trip. You should also visit TripAdvisor forum posts ( Here is the Kenya Forum ) and ask questions about your particular situation. There are a lot of people who are happy to help you out.
  • Choosing a Safari Company: I have written an extensive article on how to choose a safari Company . You can. Check it out before starting the process of searching for a safari company.
  • Consulting Session : If you have any questions you would like to ask me about Kenya, I would invite you to contact me for a 30-minute consultation session where I will share my knowledge about East Africa and share experiences that will help you make your trip easier. Kenya is re-known for its hospitality, friendly, warm welcome with over 42 ethnic tribes from the smallest El-Molo tribe to the millions of Kikuyu; beautiful attractions ranging from over 450kms of white sandy beaches stretching from Shimoni to Lamu, protected by a natural coral reef offering some unique and exquisite marine life along the coast to the National parks and game reserves rich with fauna and flora.  Some famous parks and reserves include: Amboseli with its Mt. Kilimanjaro backdrop; Tsavo East and West, which has the largest land area; Masai Mara which has the highest concentration of wildlife per square mile; Lake Bogoria for its hot springs and geysers; and Kakamega Forest, perhaps the last remaining equatorial rainforests in Tropical Africa and Lake Nakuru National Park home to over a million flamingos, rhinos among other animals and bird species while Mt. Kenya is a challenge to mountain climbers and worth to visit. Samburu National Reserve with its rare wildlife that are found only in the northern part of Kenya is worth a visit not forgetting to mention rich culture of the Samburu and Turkana communities.

Pick up from city hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for the morning flight to Amboseli National Park departing at 07.30hrs. Met upon arrival at the airstrip and transferred to your lodge with a game drive en route arriving in time for lunch. Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, 5,895m Kilimanjaro, is one of the most popular of Kenya’s national parks. It lies some 240 km southeast of Nairobi very close to the Tanzania border. The snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above a saucer of clouds dominates every aspect of Amboseli. Gazetted as a national park in 1974 it covers only 392 sq km but despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species). Years ago, this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the wilds of Africa. Short siesta after lunch before your afternoon game drive in search of game. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena/Oltukai Lodge – (Full Board)

Day 2 FULL DAY AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Met on arrival at the airstrip and transferred to Larsen’s Camp/Samburu Serena lodge with a short game drive en route to arrive shortly before lunch. Samburu National Reserve is not very well known, but definitely worth a visit. It is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya. The reserve is not particularly well known and is therefore not too crowded – a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves are often overflowing with tourists. It is often grouped together with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves as they lie so close together. Afternoon game drives in search of game. Dinner and overnight at Larsen’s Camp/Samburu Serena Lodge – (Full board)

Day 6 FULL DAY MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

Spend full day on game drive with all meals at your camp/lodge – (Full board). What strikes you most about the Masai Mara, a massive game reserve in Kenya, is the sheer amount of wildlife roaming its grassy plains. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of animals dot the landscape — from elephants and lions, to cheetahs, giraffes and the always-cranky wildebeest. Flying across the Masai Mara from Nairobi or Mombasa, you get a glimpse of the stunning landscape, with the Mara River winding across the sweeping grasslands that are dotted with rolling hills. But it’s not until you touch down at the remote, dusty airstrip that the beauty of the area and abundance of wildlife becomes brilliantly clear. Dinner and overnight at Kichwa Tembo/Mara Serena Lodge

Our Most Booked, Most Affordable Kenya Safari Packages

How much does a kenya safari cost –  the ultimate guide .

The cost of a safari in Kenya varies depending on the type and duration of the safari, as well as other factors such as accommodation costs, park entrance fees and the number of people in your group. Generally, safaris can range from about US$1000 for a short 2-day trip to several thousand dollars for a longer, more luxurious safari. Here we have looked at some of the factors that will help you answer the question of how much is a safari in Kenya ?

How Much is a Safari in Kenya Per Day? – Type of Safari

If you are looking to get away and go on the ultimate safari vacation, there are options for just about any budget.

Average Kenya Safari Cost for a Budget Trip

For as little as USD 180 – USD 250 dollars per day, you could be off to a budget safari in Kenya with zero compromises on quality and safety. This amount covers everything from transport costs to accommodation and everything in between. The budget does not cover international flights.

You will mostly be traveling in a small group of 4 people in a tour van with a raised roof for optimal game viewing. Your stay will be in 3 and 4-star safari lodges and hotels on a full-board basis.

The amount also covers destination entrance fees and everything else essential for a successful safari in Kenya. Luxury drinks, tips, and items of personal nature such as airtime are excluded from the budget Kenya safari package prices .

Most camping safaris , self-drive safaris, beach holidays packages, and Kenya group tours fall within this budget. Budget Kenya safaris work well for the adventurous at heart. We do not recommend budget vacation packages for families traveling with Kids or Honeymooners.

Average Mid-Range Kenya Safari Packages Cost

If budget safaris do not make the cut for you, mid-budget Kenya wildlife safari packages are a great option. They are the most popular option, largely because they offer the best value for money.

Here you are looking at spending about USD 300 to USD 500 per person daily. We recommend this option for honeymooners, seniors, and family travelers . Within this budget, you are looking at a private safari with exclusive use of a safari land cruiser with a pop-up roof for easy spotting of the Kenyan wildlife and scenery.

Your accommodation will be in 4 stars and 5-star hotels and safari lodges.

Average Cost of Luxury Kenya Safaris

You only get to live once. So, having a luxurious Kenya safari (at least) once in your life is a great idea. As imagined, luxury comes with hefty price tags that range anywhere above USD 600 per person/day.

It’s a large figure, but here you are looking at a luxury at its best.

Kenya Safari Tours from Nairobi Cost – Accommodation

At the end of a busy day in the Kenyan Savannahs, you want to retire to a hotel that offers great amenities. These ranges from sumptuous meals, endless opportunities to connect with the local people, and top-of-the-line amenities such as free Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and more.

So, here are the safari accommodation options available in our country.

Five-Star Hotels

The rooms go for anywhere between USD 500 and USD 1000 per night. But you can pay extra for additional space and luxurious amenities. This option is the closest you can get to world-class luxury. Our luxury Kenya safari packages offer accommodation in five-star hotels.

Four-Star Hotels

A room costs between USD 100 and USD 200 per night. That covers the bed and breakfast while the rest is on you. Expect nothing but decent services and facilities in these hotels.

Three-Star Hotels

The most affordable hotels in Kenya are pretty ragged, but they can go as low as USD 50 per night. You will get the basic amenities, a bed, and (hopefully) breakfast for the price.

Luxury accommodation at Masai Mara Kenya

How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?  – Cost of Meals

This part is where it gets exciting, considering that there are so many options. And everybody wants to eat at the end of the day. Shall we?

5 Star and 4 Star Hotels

A decent meal in these hotels cost around USD 20 to USD 200. These hotels offer the perfect mix of comfort, satisfaction, and value for money. Hotels in this category share what’s on the menu at a great time, and if you choose to, the cooks will gladly prepare a meal of your choice.

The staff is multilingual, and the menu includes both local and international cuisines.

Food Courts

Here, you can enjoy well-cooked meals for USD 5 – USD 20 per dish. For example, a meal at Burger Hut Nairobi will go for around USD 4.5. Kenchic Inn, a famous fast food joint, will charge you roughly USD 5 per dish. But the idea here is, fast food is way cheaper than good stuff.

Street Meals

Street food – usually a plate of rice or ugali with beans, vegetables, and sometimes a piece of meat – costs USD 5- USD 15. They are not quality meals, and the setting is also not so attractive. But Kenyans eat that all the time. We do not recommend this option for family travelers.

Cost of Drinking Out

A 500 ml bottle of beer costs between USD 1.2- USD 3, depending on the brand. But some joints sell them at USD 10 per bottle. Tusker is the flagship Kenyan Beer. Other options include the world-famous Guinness, Smirnoff, Jameson, and more.

Masai Mara Kenya Safari Cost – Transport

Moving to Kenya has never been an issue. Some of the options here are super cheap and will still get you across the country.

Matatus (Public Service Vehicles)

Matatus (vans) are the most economical way of getting from one point to another in Kenya . Thanks to fluctuating fuel prices and other factors, the cost varies from time to time.

For example, a ride from Nairobi to Naivasha costs USD 5 on a normal day . But the price may go as high as USD 10 or more during peak hours.  We do not recommend this option for international explorers.

Taxi & Uber

Most taxis in Kenya don’t have meters. So, it is wise to negotiate and agree on the cost before boarding. Alternatively, use premium taxis service providers such as Uber , Delight cabs, or Pewin Cabs.

Domestic Flights

Flying is the most expensive means of transport in Kenya, also the safest and the fastest. There are some attractive deals to be enjoyed on airlines, such as Fly 540, which charges around USD 70 for a one-way trip (Nairobi and Mombasa).

Jambo Jet, another local airline, charges as low as USD 30 for a one-way trip between Nairobi and Malindi . You will also get a cheap flight to Masai Mara from around USD 150 one way from operators such as Mombasa Air Safari.

Train services run from Nairobi to Mombasa, and plans are underway to take it further. The cheapest fare for Nairobi to Mombasa is USD 10 for the second class, while first-class costs USD 30.

Buses are usually in the range of USD 1 per hour. A bus ride to Mombasa from Nairobi will cost you anything between USD 7 – USD 15.

Safari Vehicles

Safari vehicles are modified and customized to make your African safari experience the most memorable one. The vehicles have been designed with the latest safety features and are equipped with enough space to accommodate all passengers.

In addition, they feature a small fridge and cooler for drinks and snacks to ensure you don’t go hungry or thirsty during your safari. They also provide comfortable seating and sun shades to help you relax in the hot African sun while enjoying the sights of Africa bush land.

You can get a safari vehicle with a professional tour guide from as low as USD 160 per day for the van and USD 250 per day for the safari land cruiser. These are the recommended vehicles for tourists.

Where to Do Safari in Kenya Cost – National Reserve and Park  Entrance Fees

Most parks are excellent choices for Kenya Budget Safaris . The entry fees depend on the season you visit and whether it is owned by the government or community. The cost can vary from as low as USD 20 for places such as Nairobi Safari Walk to as high as USD 110 for Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Safari in Nairobi Kenya – 8 Things You Should Know for Budget Safari

When it comes to booking a holiday in Kenya, the safari capital of the world, the total Kenya safari cost is a must consider factor, and it is sometimes more than what meets the eye. Yes, we have seen it all. A USD 200/day safari that’s costlier than a USD 400/day safari, and USD 800/day cheaper than a USD 400 per day Kenya tour – when you consider the finer details.

Foreigners who want to book a holiday in Kenya are often overwhelmed by the sheer variety of Kenya safari packages on offer. I mean, if you scroll the web, you will see a 3 days Kenya safari package for USD 400 per person sharing, a 3 days Kenya Holiday package for USD 800 per person sharing, and so on.

My point here, the number of days you will stay in Kenya remains the same (3 days) in both offers, but the Kenya safari cost of one package is double that of the other. So, which package is cheaper?

Tight Budget? Here Are Some Saving Tips

  • Find a group – Traveling alone can be quite boring and expensive. Opting for a group Kenya safari makes the trip fun. Also, it translates to shared traveling expenses. Everybody wants to save a few bucks.
  • Book in advance – It might be tempting to think that planning on the go is more exciting than making prior arrangements. But on the contrary, it is more expensive. Consider finding a tour operator to help you make reservations in Advance.
  • Is it Low Season or High Season? – Traveling to Kenya during the low season might seem economical – but it’s not. There is a big chance that you will miss the migrating wildlife and the excitement that comes with crowds. So, the best time is probably when the season is still young. Think of early July.
  • Don’t Spend Nights in the Park – Ideally, prices in camps and hotels inside the national parks are exorbitant. You will pay at least 2-day worth of entrance fees even if you don’t intend to drive around the next day. Luckily, there are decent options close to all parks in Kenya.
  • Consider Camping – Some parks provide travelers with the option to pitch tents in a designated area within the park. This option will save you tons of cash and bring you closer to the animals. Hell’s Gate National Park is an excellent example of such a place.
  • Eat at the Driver’s Shop – It is obvious the hotel staff and safari drivers do not dine in those high-end hotels. So ask around, and you might get delicious meals at surprisingly low prices.
  • Carry Packed Drinks/Food – Drinks and food are often overpriced, especially in those off-grid destinations. However, some safari packages might cover meals, but the surest way to save money is carrying your own food.
  • Consider Traveling the Unbeaten Path – The not-so-popular parks will charge you less, yet you will see almost all of the wildlife found in the other parks. They are also smaller, so you might have an easier time spotting wild animals.

FAQs of How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?

To help you make an informed choice, let’s share 10 questions you need to ask your Kenya tour operator before buying the package .

 1. What’s included in the Kenya safari package Cost?

Safari’s holidays in Kenya come in all shapes and sizes. You can go for budget Kenya safaris , including the bare minimum facilities, and you can also choose ultra-luxurious safari packages.

To make better sense of what you are paying for, it’s wise to ask about the components of the safari package. The standard definition of “all-inclusive” means the packages cover accommodation, food, transfers, park fees, and safari vehicles.

However, don’t assume that all that is included. Call your tour Kenya tour operator and make sure these costs are indeed included for the entire stay. For example, if food is covered, ask exactly which types of food are covered.

Some packages are labeled ‘all-inclusive,” but you are only covered for meals taken within the lodge, and you are expected to pay for alcoholic beverages and anything else you take while on the go.

Another trick used to hike the cost of a package is including airport transfers, while actually, no air safaris or transfers are involved. So, if that is an item in your package, ask where you will board the safari from and to where?

 2. How much of the park can be accessed?

You need to clearly ask out the bounds of the park and the restrictions that come with it. Many budget safaris during your holiday in Kenya will give you a short car tour of the park and then drive you outside the park into some nearby hotel.

This would be unfortunate as you won’t be able to experience the quintessential safari ambiance that intensifies during dawn and dusk. However, if you are planning to buy a luxury package, you don’t need to worry about these restrictions.

Luxury travelers are often rewarded with the best camps and unlimited drive times inside the park, but it is always wise to confirm with your Kenya tour company.

 3. Kenya Safari Cost – Will you be sharing the safari with strangers?

The most common problem associated with budget Kenya safari packages is that they tend to cram people of different backgrounds into the same trip. This can mean a disparate age-group or someone who doesn’t even speak your language.

Ask the tour agent to clarify how many people you will be traveling with and, if possible, prefer solo, personalized trips. Luxury safaris won’t pair you with strangers, and you can enjoy the freedom to explore the safari experience the way you like, instead of being dictated by the needs of others.

 4. Who dictates the safari pace and objectives?

You will have to follow the crowd and routine of the safari experience in a budget safari. The biggest disadvantage of being in a budget group is that you won’t have much voice over the itinerary.

You can’t stay longer at a particular spot if you wish, and worse, you can return earlier if you wish. This is important because prolonged exposure to the equatorial sun can make foreigners uncomfortable. Inquire about such provisions and the full itinerary of the trip in detail.

A private safari with us lets you dictate your trip’s speed and is flexible to your needs. You can focus on any wildlife you want for as long as you want. Your needs won’t be bogged down by others.

 5. How knowledgeable are the safari guides?

Budget safaris advertise their tours with over-the-top descriptions and then fail to deliver on a good local guide. This is also a problem with most international travel companies promising to bring you on tour to Africa.

A good guide will have a profound knowledge of various animals and bird species and instinctive knowledge of the behavior of animals, their feeding habits, their trials, and more.

They are also trained to spot distant birds and camouflaged animals. Training separates a lot of good guides from the bad ones, and you should ask for any certifications or government registrations if available.

 6. How well equipped is the safari vehicle?

Safari Vehicles have a great deal of variety and are priced according to the facilities they provide. From mini-vans to rugged land cruisers to open hatchbacks, you can choose the vehicle that suits your style and budget.

In luxury packages, you can find air-conditioned vehicles with large recliner seats and even in-house refrigerators serving your favorite drinks. A budget safari will give you a seat and a window to look out at.

The minimum you should expect from the vehicle is to have proper cushions, proper mechanics, and proper communication types of equipment like CB radios, which are used to hone in on any major hunt or wildlife activity in the park.

It’s also necessary to carry safety equipment like first-aid boxes and tranquilizer guns in case of emergency situations.

 7. How many souvenir shops will you be forced into?

The biggest problem with budget safari operators is that they survive off commissions rather than on their actual job of guiding – and this influences your Kenya safari cost. In this pursuit of cheap commissions on souvenir sales, the tour operators tend to take the tourists to pre-fixed shops, where the prices are automatically inflated.

The tour operators generally get a 10% cut on every purchase you make at their shop. Even worse, sometimes you can be tricked into buying cheap Chinese products. On the other hand, proper tourism agencies will ask you if you wish to buy souvenirs and then only take you to authentic places, where you can get better products and help the local community with their handicrafts.

 8. What are the provisions for special interests?

Budget safaris are notorious for their apathy, and this can ruin your entire holiday in Kenya. If your expectations are low and you need a pretty generic ride of the savannah, then you can be satisfied with the budget safari packages.

However, if you wish to partake in additional activities like bird-watching, extra exploring, wildlife photography, small picnics, etc., then it’s best to inform your tour operator beforehand. Budget safari operators are strict on time and can disappoint you with their hastiness if you don’t inquire before.

So, make sure to inquire with your agency and know exactly what your Kenya safari cost covers. Alternatively, half the Kenya tour companies do all the essential bookings for you and opt for self-drive Kenya safaris. Luxury safaris are more personalized, and you can customize each of your activities according to your needs.

 9. When to go on a Kenya safari?

Safari experiences depend on the weather, and so does the price. If you find yourself on holiday in Kenya in the rainy season, you can possibly ask for a lower price since the markets are low during that time.

March to May is the rainy season in Kenya, where you can get lower prices on most safaris and expect thinner crowds. When the safaris are booked to the brim and prices are sky-high, the equation changes during the winter.

 10. Is the safari driver familiar with the English language?

On most safari trips, the driver will be your guide, and you should make sure that he can speak English to a communicable degree. Having a common language will give you a better perspective of their native culture and heritage.

We are travel. We are local.  We are your wildest safari expectations fulfilled. We show you Kenya better than anyone.

Safaris From Nairobi - Compare 1,718 Tours

Nairobi is the starting point of just about every Kenya safari, and the possibilities of where you can go from Kenya’s capital are rich and varied. Roads fan out across the country from Nairobi, while both the main international airport and smaller Wilson Airport have a range of flights to towns and remote airstrips in national parks, reserves and conservancies nationwide. Remember that Kenya is the birthplace of the East African safari, and choosing which parks to visit and matching these to the animals you most wish to see requires careful planning. And it will absolutely be worth it.

5 Questions About Safaris From Nairobi

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

kenya safari price

Where can I go on a safari from Nairobi?

“You can go anywhere in Kenya on safari from Nairobi. That’s because the capital is where most people arrive in the country, and most parks or reserves are an easy drive (or a much shorter flight) from here. Best of all, Nairobi is one of few cities in Africa that has a world-class wildlife park (Nairobi National Park) in the city’s outer suburbs. Make sure you visit the park before heading out to the other parks that are farther away. The most popular safari destinations from Nairobi are the Masai Mara National Reserve to the west, Lake Nakuru National Park to the northwest and Amboseli National Park in the southeast. If you’re visiting Amboseli, then Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks are not far away. Close to Lake Nakuru you’ll find the other Rift Valley lakes, such as Lake Naivasha. Out west, the Masai Mara is surrounded by community conservancies that are also outstanding places to go on safari. If you’re willing to travel a little farther, in the north there’s Samburu National Reserve.”

How much time do I need for a Kenya trip from Nairobi?

“How you answer this question will depend on how much time you have to spare and how much money you have to spend. That’s because you could easily spend a month or two on safari in Kenya and still not see everything. Count on spending at least 1 day in and around Nairobi, although Kenya’s capital really does deserve at least a couple of days. If you decide to visit Amboseli or Lake Nakuru National Parks, 2 days for each is really a minimum. For Amboseli, add a couple of extra days each for Tsavo West and Tsavo East. For the Masai Mara, plan on a minimum of 3 days, but ideally you should dedicate more time here. And remember, when calculating the length of your safari you’ll need to allow for the time you spend traveling to and from each destination. Many travelers also combine time spent on safari with a beach holiday, so you might wish to factor that in too, if that’s a priority.”

Can I see the Big Five animals on a trip from Nairobi?

“Seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) is certainly possible on a safari from Nairobi. One of the best places to see the Big Five is Ol Pejeta Conservancy, up on the Laikipia Plateau and within a half-day’s journey from Nairobi. Often it is the rhino that is most difficult of the Big Five to see. Apart from the Laikipia Plateau (Ol Pejeta, Lewa or Borana Conservancies, for example), the easiest places to see rhinos are Nairobi National Park or Lake Nakuru National Park. Both of these parks have four of the Big Five; neither has elephants. If you were to combine one or more of these parks with the Masai Mara, Amboseli or one of the Tsavos, then you would have a good chance of seeing the five species (in addition to so many other animals).”

Should I go for a road or fly-in safari from Nairobi?

“The major factors when considering whether to make your trip a road or fly-in safari are time and money. Flying has a number of advantages. One is that it will get you where you want to go so much more quickly, maximizing the amount of time you get to spend in the parks themselves (as opposed to traveling between the parks). Many of Kenya’s major roads are clogged with traffic and none too beautiful, so you won’t be missing much if you fly. And you have the added benefit of enjoying remarkable views on your way to wherever it is that you’re going. It may take longer but traveling by road will be much more affordable for many travelers. That’s because flying doesn’t come cheap. If you travel by road, you also get to see more of the country up close, which is a great way to meet locals (something which is less likely if you travel by air).”

How much will this safari cost?

“It depends on the possible tours and packages on offer, but there is endless variety when it comes to the price of a safari from Nairobi. The cheapest safari could cost US$100 per person per day for a budget camping safari, and it could rise to 10 times that for a high-end luxury safari trip. Factors to take into account when considering potential costs are whether you travel in high or low season; which kind of accommodation you choose; whether you travel on a private or a cheaper group safari; how long you plan to be on safari; and whether your safari includes any flights. When you receive a quote from a tour operator, always make sure that you understand what’s included. Most quotes should include park entry fees, transfers, meals, some drinks, accommodation (including camping equipment, where needed), vehicle, driver, game drives and a guide.”

Nairobi National Park safari | Travel guide

Nairobi National Park is a national park in Kenya that was established in 1946 about 7 km south of Nairobi. It is fenced on three sides, whereas the open southern boundary allows migrating wildlife to move between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains.

The park is sometimes called Kifaru Ark, which means “Rhinoceros Sanctuary”. It is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries, and it is one of only a few parks where visitors can be certain of seeing a black rhinoceros in its natural habitat.

Herbivores are also known to gather in the park during the dry season and the park itself brings a unique charm that sets it apart from other parks in Kenya with the proximity alone outside the capital city making it an easy addition to most visitors travel plans.

Table of Contents

Why visit Nairobi National Park?

Nairobi national park safari.

There are plenty of great things to do in Kenya and as Kenya’s first national park, Nairobi National Park has been a wild haven for the capital city since 1946. At 45 square miles, the park is small compared to most national parks.

Size aside however, Nairobi National Park’s landscape hosts thousands of wild animals at home in various ecosystems. Primarily the park consists of open grasslands dotted with scrub and upland forests, making it an ideal habitat for many of Kenya’s native species.

But given the relatively restrictive size of the park, its carrying capacity for predators is limited. Most are shocked to learn that Nairobi National Park is home to a nearly complete set of Kenyan species.

Only leaving the most formidable creature, elephants, out of the landscape. Simply put the park is too small for their massive appetites, plus elephants would destroy the three-sided fence perimeter.

Nairobi NP is known for healthy populations of cape buffalo, Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impala, ostrich, and hippo. And where there is prey, there are often predators! Within Nairobi National Park’s boundaries live prides of lion, spotted hyena, jackal, and even elusive leopard and cheetah.

Visitors will also find numerous lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, over 400 bird species, and many large herbivores. But the main highlight of Nairobi National Park is its resident rhinos.

In fact, the park hosts one of the highest densities of black rhino in Kenya. Many view the park as the best location to observe this critically endangered species in the entire country, if not the world.

Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 111 black rhinos and 24 white rhinos. These population numbers are a true success considering the park was void of rhinos until their introduction back in 1996.

kenya safari price

With over 500 bird species recorded, Nairobi NP probably gives Kenya’s capital the longest bird list of all cities in the world. The park’s substantial area of undisturbed grassland is of great importance for species such as the restricted-range Jackson’s widowbird, which breeds here regularly after good rains.

Other grassland birds include ostriches, secretary birds and bustards. Nairobi NP is a popular birding destination and it’s easy to book a full or half day guided birding trip at short notice.

The park’s predominant environment is open grass plain with scattered Acacia bushes. The western uplands of the park have highland dry forest with stands of Olea africana, Croton dichogamus, Brachylaena hutchinsii, and Calodendrum.

The lower slopes of these areas are grassland. Themeda, cypress, Digitaria, and Cynodon species are found in these grassland areas.

Other activities at Nairobi National Park

Here are some other activities which visitors can consider during their African safari experience in Nairobi National Park:

  • Photography safari tours: Visitors on a photo safari CAN share a luxury photography tour with like-minded individuals and capture their favourite moments.
  • Sightseeing tours: This is best to see the hippo pools, giraffe center, day tours or early morning game drives in private vehicles. Guests can tour Nairobi National Park and visit the animal orphanage as well. The park also contains a historic ivory burning site.

Maasai Mara also known as “The Mara” by the locals is one of the most wonderful game reserves found the Great Rift Valley with a lot of animal concentration on the Western escarpment. It is located in the Southwestern part of Kenya in Narok County, covering an area of 1510sqkm. Masai Mara is bordered by Tanzania and is more like an extension of the Serengeti National Park in the North.

It derived its name “Masai” from the “Red cloak” that is dressed by the Maasai people who have lived in the park for centuries, and the word Mara means “mottled”

The Maasai Mara is a great Kenya safari park for game viewing with over 450 bird species, over 95 mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The game viewing involves observing the Great migration where millions of wildebeests, elands, gazelles and Zebras migrate from the Serengeti to the Mara from around July to October every year. Other animals include; the Maasai lions, elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, crocodiles, African leopards, cheetahs, giraffes and many others.

The park is approximately 270km from Nairobi which is Kenya’s capital and this is about 4 to 5 hours on road and 40 to 45 minutes by air. The road is basically good though it is a little dusty from Narok town to Sekenani Gate.

Maasai Mara can be visited any time in the year though months December to February are better for the viewing of the big cats since it is a dry season and July to October is the best time to observe the Great wildebeest migration. Concerning the climatic conditions there are two seasons; the rainy season that starts from November to May and the dry season from June to November. The temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C.

Activities in this reserve include; Game viewing, visits to the Maasai villages, night game drives, camping, bush breakfast, lunch and dinner . The Mara is a good place for honey moons and also good for photography.

There are very many places to stay in and near the Maasai Mara such as Mara Serena (luxury), Governors’ Camp (luxury) and others around are Olonana, Tembo, Mara Siria Camps.

#2 Tsavo Safaris Kenya

Price From: $ 1200(USD) Tour Duration: 4 Days Safari Number of Persons: 6 or less.

Tsavo National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and oldest National Parks covering an area of 13,747 Sqkm . The park is divided into two; Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It is situated in a semi-desert area known as the Taru Desert. The park was opened in 1948 and was named after the Tsavo River which flows from west to east of the park.

Tsavo East is known for large herds of Elephants that bathe in the red dust, a lush view of semi arid plains good for game viewing, Mudanda rock, the Yatta plateau, different Kenya safari bird species Lugard falls which drop into crocodile-filled pools and rapids these make it an amazing place to visit and photography. Other animals in Tsavo East include; Hyenas, lions, cape buffaloes, gazelles, giraffes, impalas, black rhinoceros, zebras, and waterbucks among others. Tsavo West covering 9065sqkm is endowed with beautiful scenery and is a great spot for birds, Chaimu Crater, Mzima Springs and other various springs with large numbers of crocodiles and hippos. Viewing wildlife in Tsavo west is not as simple as it is in Tsavo East because the vegetation here is denser, but still the beautiful scenery over shadows this!

Safaris can be done in Tsavo throughout the year, though there are two rainy seasons such as from March to May (rainfall is very heavy and it makes game viewing difficult), October to December (lesser rains hence during this time safaris can go on). The temperatures are approximately 27-31°C during day and 22-24°C at night.

You can get to Tsavo National Park by road; either by taking public means or booking a mini bus or land cruiser, it is 333km from Nairobi via Voi gate and 173km from Mombasa via Bachuma gate. The park can also be accessed by Air and Rail way.

Where to stay; there are various accommodation facilities in and near Tsavo National Park ranging from Luxury to budget. They include; Red Elephant Safari Lodge (Luxury), Kilalinda Lodge Tsavo (Luxury), Gladessa Bush Camp (Small luxury camp), Ithumba camp Tsavo (luxury), Voyager Safari Camp (Luxury), Kitani lodge Tsavo (Bandas), Ndololo Safari Camp (Backpackers), Sau Tsavo Camp (Budget) and many others.

Amboseli national Park is the second famous park in Kenya and is located approximately 240km from Nairobi Kenya’s capital in Kajiado County, it covers 8,000sqkm. The Park derived the name “Amboseli” from a Masai word that means “Salty dust”, its former name was Masai Amboseli game reserve. The local people around this place are mostly Masai though also other people from different parts of Kenya stay around. The rainfall received in this area is approximately 350mm which is lower than that received in other parts of the country.

Amboseli is one of the best places for game viewing since it is endowed with wildlife such as the very many numbers of elephants, impalas, waterbucks, giraffes, elands, big cats like cheetahs, lions , over 400 bird species such as kingfishers, pelicans, and other attractions include Masai villages and the beautiful spectacular views of Mt. Kenya Safari Cost

What to consider while costing your Kenya safari

The cost of a safari in Kenya usually depends on number of days one wants to spend in the country, the class of accommodation and many other things that need to be accounted for.

Just like other safaris in other countries, safaris in Kenya are not so cheap since whatever package you choose, the overall total cost has to include transportation, food, park entry fees and accommodation. In most cases being on a solo safari gets a bit costly since you end up covering most costs alone, so it would be advisable you visit Kenya with a friend to share costs especially of hiring the safari vehicle.

kenya safaris

An all-inclusive 3 days safari on budget can cost $500 with spending at least $150 or $200 per day.

Ensure that you get enough information about the different attractions to visit and things to do to see the factors considered in costing a safari. And below are some of the factors to consider;

Length of safari (Duration)

Whichever way you are planning your safari whether through a tour operator or on individual basis you need to know the number of days you will spend in Kenya. By doing so it helps you know how much you will need to spend daily.

For example; a person that desires to visit Kenya but has a tight budget, it is advisable you stay in the country for lesser days, because the longer you stay in the country the more the cost because also other factors like accommodation affect your length of stay.

But if you plan to stay longer, you could visit in the low season where prices are lower; you could save about 40% which would have been spent in the high season, the other advantage is that you get to watch baby wildlife, birds and also the crowds are lesser in the Parks.

Number of people traveling

This is important; whether you are planning a private safari or group safari or family safari among others. The number of travelers is considered in the perspective of the transport costs.

So when its only one person traveling he/she has to meet all the costs of hiring the safari vehicle and the number of days it will be used. However, if you hire a 7-seater van, which is about $150 per day or a 7-seater 4X4 Land cruiser costing about $230 per day, the cost is shared among the seven people which is not the case when its only one person travelling.

Going on a safari as an individual can be costly in terms of transport.

Accommodation facilities

This starts with you; what kind if accommodation do you what, but before you choose that you should be knowing which places or national parks and the exact sectors you are visiting. Because in most cases the location of your accommodation affects which activities you participate in.

Kenya has different accommodation ranging from super luxurious suites to luxury lodges to moderate tented camps to budget lodges to campsites. So even whatever budget you are on you are sure that you won’t lack where to stay while in Kenya. You can get accommodation that ranges from $40 dollar to more than $1200 a night.

But keep in mind that accommodation in different areas like Masai-Mara during the peak season can be on high demand so if that’s when you want to travel then you should make your bookings early enough.

National Parks

These are the major places to be visited while on the Kenyan safari. The park visited is based on the traveler’s interest; the kind of wildlife or birds they want to see. However, the most popular wildlife reserve is the Masai-Mara because for the Annual Wildebeest Migration and charges higher price.

One of the cheapest National Parks like Nairobi charges an entry fee of $40 per day, others like Meru, Tsavo West and Tsavo East charge entry fee of $52 per day and the Masai-Mara and Amboseli charge $60 park entry fee per day.

Other activities

Of course while on safari you will enjoy game drives and have memories that are unforgettable, but it is important to engage in other activities such as hot air balloon safaris, horse riding, river rafting, guided nature walks, night game drives, these experiences also come at an extra cost.

You could book to engage in them before you travel such that they are costed in your original total cost or you could pay and engage in some while on ground already.

When to visit

The season or time of the year you visit Kenya is important in the aspect because there are both the peak and the low seasons. Peak season is when business is high and the numbers of visitors are high, the low season is the opposite.

Therefore knowing when to travel affects the cost of your safari because most costs are high especially the lodges and of which during the low seasons some lodges lower their prices. But t also helps you to know what to see and engage in the time you travel. The best time to travel is in the dry season from June to October when even the Wildebeests have arrived in the Masai-Mara or from January to February.

Other factors to consider while costing your safari to Kenya are; Travel Insurance, Visas, International Flights, Domestic Flights, Tips, Laundry, Souvenirs, drinks and beverages and Extra cars or Transfers(from Airport to accommodation and vice versa)

Sample of cost per person with different safari packages

Kenya being a safari destination has a lot to offer, starting with the National Parks such as Tsavo, Nakuru, and Masai Mara, Mount Kenya National parks , Museums like Malindi museum and Nairobi National museum, old towns and cities like Mombasa, Beaches like Watamu Beach , Lakes such as Lake Naivasha , Caves like Obsidian caves in the Hell’s Gate National Park.
