Active filters, household travel survey (persons).

In the fall of 2019, the Kingston Moves household travel survey was conducted to establish a new baseline of travel patterns and behaviour in the City. The results provide a snapshot of daily travel at a household, neighbourhood, and city-wide level that will inform neighbourhood-level transportation planning work, as well as broader city-wide transportation policies and future capital project planning.

The data collected is divided into three datasets: Households, Persons, and Trips. All three datasets are generalized to protect personal information privacy. For a detailed Data Dictionary which describes the meaning of each field and the collected data values, please see this document .

The full report to council is also available on the City of Kingston website .

City launches household travel survey.

kingston household travel survey

The City of Kingston is launching its Household Travel Survey today – a voluntary program where selected households, chosen at random, report on their travel within the city over a 24-hour period.

Titled “Kingston Moves” , the survey collects data that will be used to inform future planning of the City’s transportation system and services.

“Residents who participate in the Kingston Moves survey are helping to shape our transportation future,” said Ian Semple, Director, Transportation Services Department. “Having an understanding of how, where and why residents are travelling within Kingston is invaluable as we work towards achieving Council’s strategic priority to improve walkability, roads and transportation in our city.”

Update: Watch this brief City of Kingston video with Mayor Paterson explaining Kingston Moves :

Selected households will receive a letter in the mail from Mayor Paterson that contains additional information about the survey – which can be completed by phone or online – along with that household’s unique participant ID.

Households that complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win a cash prize of $500 or one of sixty $25 e-gift certificates.

The Kingston Moves survey is being administered on behalf of the City of Kingston by R.A. Malatest & Associates, an independent research firm with experience in municipal and regional travel surveys.

  • Abstract: The 2022 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) provides an inventory of daily personal travel in the United States. It is the only source of national-level multimodal statistics on personal travel in the United States. The survey series (conducted since 1969) includes demographic data on households, people, and vehicles as well as detailed information on daily travel by all modes of transportation and for all purposes. NHTS survey data are collected from a random sample of households and expanded to provide estimates of trips and miles of travel by travel mode, trip purpose, and other important attributes for the noninstitutionalized population of the United States. When combined with historical data from earlier surveys (i.e., the 1969, 1977, 1983, 1990, and 1995 National Personal Transportation Surveys and the 2001, 2009, and 2017 NHTS), these data serve as a rich source of information on the trends in travel over time and provide important insights into adjustments in travel as the Nation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. This report summarizes trends in household and personal travel patterns, including changes to the household-based vehicle fleet and commuting patterns. The report begins with a summary of changes in population, demographics, and related travel. Next, travel trends are examined at the household level, which is then followed by a summary of changes in travel at the person-level, including trips by purpose and miles of travel by age and sex. Following sections detail changes in vehicle availability and usage, commute travel patterns, temporal distribution, and the travel of special populations and emerging travel modes. The 2022 NHTS was conducted using an address-based sample. Most respondents reported data in the web-based reporting tool, which differs from the 2017 NHTS that offered both online and phone options. While survey methods affect final results, efforts to minimize differences resulting from method changes have been applied to the data to maximize comparability. For details, please reference Appendix A and the data documentation at https://nhts.ornl.gov/. Researchers and data users are encouraged to further explore and assess how the change in methods might affect their estimates. More ▼ -->

Survey Questions:

Click on the Survey Login button to begin your survey.

What will I be asked?

You will be asked where you and others in your household travelled in a day, when your trip took place, and how you got there.

You will also be asked a few questions about your household and the people that reside there. This will include questions about the type of building you live in, the number of vehicles/bicycles in your possession, ages of residents, employment status, and so on. This will help us to better understand who travels where and what travel options they have.

For the purposes of this survey, a trip is defined as a one-way journey from one location to another by any form of transportation, whether driving or as a passenger, walking, cycling, public transit, etc.

Here is a sample of the questions asked:

About your household

  • Type of Dwelling (house, townhouse, or apartment)
  • Number of people
  • Number of vehicles available for personal use and type of fuel
  • Number of bicycles

About each person

  • His/her age
  • Does he/she have a driver's licence?
  • Where is his/her workplace or school?

About each trip made by each person on the previous weekday

  • Origin and destination (from where, to where?)
  • Departure and arrival time of the trip
  • Reason for making the trip (e.g. shopping, work, return home, etc.)
  • Mode(s) of travel (e.g. walking, cycling, transit, motor vehicle etc.)
  • Transit: how you got to the bus stop, route(s)

We will only be collecting trip information for persons 5 years of age or older.

We are committed to protecting your privacy: Privacy Statement .
