Tour 2023: Voorbeschouwing favorieten bergklassement – Aanvallers tegen topfavorieten

Jonas Vingegaard – foto: Cor Vos

klimmers tour 2023

Giulio Ciccone – foto: Cor Vos

klimmers tour 2023

Felix Gall – foto: Cor Vos

Tour de France 2023 Favourites stage 14: Climbers with descending skills

Giulio Ciccone - Tour de France 2023 Favourites stage 14: Climbers with descending skills

To arrive at the foot of the feared and revered Col de Joux Plane the riders have to conquer the Col de Saxel (4.2 kilometres at 4.6%), Col de Cou (7 kilometres at 7,4%), Col du Feu (5.8 kilometres at 7.8%), Col de Jambaz (6.8 kilometres at 3.8%), and Col de Ramaz (13.9 kilometres at 7.1%). The Joux Plane itself is a brutal test – 11.6 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 8.5%. Which is all the more intimidating with the realisation that the second half is virtually entirely double digit material.

The summit of the de Joux Plane is not the start of the downhill finale. The riders stay at altitude for a couple of kilometres – first false flat down, then false flat up – before the descent is extremely technical and difficult. The last few hundred metres in Morzine climb at 3% to the line, which could be important in a sprint.

Attackers or GC riders? We would say the first category, but it could be the other way around just as easily.

Bergklassement

Poels

Their Australian climber Ben O’Connor had a nightmare in 2022, ripping a muscle in a crash, but O’Connor is back on form this season so they need a repeat of his 2021 feats, with Paret-Peintre and Cosnefroy likely to target hilly stages.

Team Stan Dewulf, Clément Berthet, Felix Gall, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Ben O’Connor, Benoît Cosnefroy, Oliver Naesen, Nans Peters

Main man Ben O’Connor – Aussie mountain man still out to prove 2021’s fourth overall was not a fluke

Alpecin-Deceuninck

From a relatively small cyclo-cross squad this cannily managed Dutch team has grown into a force to be reckoned with, mainly due to the presence of Mathieu van der Poel, the most charismatic racer in the bunch, but also because the team has recruited wisely around him. At the Tour they focus on Jasper Philipsen for the sprints and perhaps the green points jersey, with VdP targeting everything bar the high mountains; he will be a favourite on stage one’s short steep hills. Van der Poel took a long rest after his Classics campaign which seems to have paid off given his form in late June.

Team Silvain Dillier, Michael Gogl, Søren Kragh Andersen, Mathieu van der Poel, Quinten Hermans, Jasper Philipsen, Jonas Rickaert, Ramon Sinkeldam

Main man Mathieu van der Poel – flying this year, with two major Classic wins and a dominant display in the Tour of Belgium: expect fireworks.

Mathieu Van Der Poel crosses the line to win the Milano-Sanremo 2023 in March.

Arkea-Samsic

This Breton-centred squad don’t have enough firepower to thrive in cycling’s most competitive milieu. Leader Warren Barguil was the future once but now looks like just another plucky contender. They will put riders in the daily daring moves but it’s hard to foresee a great deal more.

Team Warren Barguil, Clément Champoussin, Simone Guglielmi, Anthony Delaplace, Luca Mozzato, Jenthe Biermans, Matîs Louvel, Laurent Pichon

Main man Warren Barguil. “Wawa” was King of the Mountains and double stage winner in 2017, but there’s only so long you can live off past glories.

Astana Qazaqstan

Kakakhstan’s finest have changed tack by hiring Mark Cavendish; a stage win for the Manxman is the obvious target but there’s not a lot of sprint support here apart from Cees Bol, with Moscon for the grunt work beforehand. To hedge their bets, Federov and Lutsenko will target mountain stages.

Team Mark Cavendish, Aleksei Lutsenko, Cees Bol, David de la Cruz, Yevgeniy Federov, Luis Leon Sanchez, Gianni Moscon, Harold Tejada

Main man Mark Cavendish – the greatest sprinter of all needs one Tour stage win for the absolute record but it won’t be simple given the dearth of sprint stages.

Mark Cavendish celebrates a stage win during this year’s Giro d’Italia.

Bahrain Victorious

Likely to be scarred mentally by the shocking death of Gino Mäder in the Tour of Switzerland, but if that tragedy brings them together, most of the riders look to be coming to form and they have a raft of chances to be “victorious” with new British champion Wright, Poels, Bilbao and Mohoric.

Team Niklas Arndt, Phil Bauhaus, Jack Haig, Pello Bilbao, Fred Wright, Mikel Landa, Matej Mohoric, Wout Poels

Main man Mikel Landa – the Basque climber is a cult figure due to his enigmatic, tragic mien; he could make the top five or fall apart. That’s “Landismo”.

Bora-Hansgrohe

Multiple opportunities for Germany’s finest, who pulled an excellently crafted Giro d’Italia win out of the bag last year with Australian climber Jai Hindley – quite the progression since their humble beginnings as team NetApp more than 10 years ago. Once again there is no place for the sprinter Sam Bennett, who has not ridden the Tour since winning two stages and the points prize in 2020. Around Hindley there’s plenty of climbing strength with Konrad, Buchman and Higuita plus a 2022 stage winner in Jungels, and a sprinter who can look after himself in Meeus.

Team Emanuel Buchman, Marco Haller, Jai Hindley, Bob Jungels, Patrick Konrad, Nils Politt, Jordi Meeus, Danny van Poppel, plus one to be named by Friday 30 June

Main man Jai Hindley. Fourth in the recent Criterium du Dauphiné bodes well but can he step up into cycling’s most hostile environment?

A team of options and caveats. Zingle, Martin, Lafay, Izaguirre and Geschke can hope for an opportunistic stage win, while Coquard is competitive in a small group finish. But they will struggle to rival the heavyweights so will probably end up with the French fallback: the daily suicide break.

Team Bryan Coquard, Simon Geschke, Ion Izaguirre, Victor Lafay, Guillaume Martin, Anthony Perez, Alexis Renard, Axel Zingle

Main man: Guillaume Martin – a cerebral climber who has written a book on philosophy; he could scrape into the top 10 overall but that looks like his limit.

DSM-Firmenich

This squad doesn’t have the biggest budget but it has a knack of landing key wins when it matters. They split neatly into a climbing half around the evergreen Romain Bardet, and Degenkolb, Edmondson and Eeckhoff in the sprint half in support of Sam Welsford – one of the surprises of this season.

Team Nils Eeckhoff, John Degenkolb, Kevin Vermaerke, Alex Edmondson, Sam Welsford, Matthew Dinham, Chris Hamilton, Romain Bardet.

Main man Romain Bardet. No longer the force he was when he finished second in the 2016 Tour but still capable of a solid top 10 overall.

EF Education-Easypost

The American team that loves to act the kooky underdogs but the facts belie this. They had a great Tour in 2022 thanks to Magnus Cort’s stage win; this year they had notched up 20 race wins by late June. The Olympic champion Carapaz, Bettiol, Uran and Powless could all land a stage.

Team Richard Carapaz, Rigoberto Uran, Neilson Powless, Alberto Bettiol, Esteban Chaves, Magnus Cort, James Shaw, Andrey Amador

Main man Magnus Cort – behind the (sponsored) fighter pilot moustache is a ruthless stage hunter chasing his 10th Grand Tour stage win.

Magnus Cort during a climb in this year’s Giro d’Italia.

Groupama-FDJ

In their 27th Tour, as usual it’s going to be fly or flop, with a bit more pressure after leader David Gaudu’s spat with sprinter Arnaud Démare sidelined this proven winner. Much loved Thibaut Pinot starts his final Tour; expect tears aplenty, hopefully on the Champs Elysées rather than before.

Team David Gaudu, Kevin Geniets, Stefan Küng, Olivier Le Gac, Valentin Madouas, Quentin Pacher, Thibaut Pinot, Lars Van den Berg

Main man David Gaudu – is France’s best hope for a podium finish but can he bear the weight of a nation?

Ineos Grenadiers

Once upon a time, the squad reputed to be the richest in cycling were the ones to beat in the Tour, but they have lost direction since Chris Froome’s departure and Egan Bernal’s horrific crash in 2022, and are now scrabbling to keep up with Jumbo and UAE. That’s reflected in a victory haul this season of around half that of the Big Two. A lot hangs on Tom Pidcock, winner at l’Alpe d’Huez last year; with Bernal struggling to return to his best, this line-up prompts a mild chin stroke rather than a sense of shock and awe.

Team Dani Martínez, Tom Pidcock, Michal Kwiatkowski, Jonathan Castroviejo, Carlos Rodriguez, Egan Bernal, Omar Fraile, Ben Turner

Main man Tom Pidcock. Super talented and a terrifyingly good bike handler, the 23-year-old Yorkshireman needs to build on a great 2022 race.

Intermarché-Circus-Wanty

Seamless progress for the Walloon team since their Tour debut in 2018. No Belgians in their squad which won’t go down well at home, but they have a real stage win hope in Girmay, a potential top 10 finisher in Meintjes and wildcards such as Calmejane, Costa and Teunissen.

Team Lilian Calmejane, Rui Costa, Biniam Girmay, Louis Meintjes, Adrien Petit, Dion Smith, Mike Teunissen, Georg Zimmerman.

Main man Biniam Girmay – after landing a sprint stage of the Giro last year, the Eritrean is a good bet to become the first black African Tour stage winner.

Israel-PremierTech

With only five wins this year, they need to buck that trend with climber Woods, the punchy Teuns, sprinter Strong or all-rounder Clarke. They will have to box clever, because none of these is the very best at their speciality. No place for Chris Froome after his poor start to 2023.

Team Guillaume Boivin, Simon Clarke, Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands, Nick Schultz, Corbin Strong, Dylan Teuns, Michael Woods

Main man Michael Woods – 36 years old and a four-minute miler in the past, the Canadian is a decent outside bet on any steep uphill finish.

Michael Woods competes in La Route D’Occitanie-La Depeche Du Midi 2023 earlier this month.

Jayco-AlUla

All in for sprinter Groenewegen and climber Yates. Yates has had a lean 2023, but he’s notched up 10 Grand Tour stages since 2018 and will have plenty of chances in a very hard Tour. Harper and Craddock support him in the mountains; Mezgec will deliver Groenewegen in the sprints.

Lawson Craddock, Luke Durbridge, Dylan Groenewegen, Chris Harper, Chris Juul-Jensen, Luka Mezgec, Elmar Reinders, Simon Yates

Main man Dylan Groenewegen. Looking for his sixth career Tour stage win, the Dutchman has had a strong season with half a dozen wins to his name already.

Jumbo-Visma

One of the two “superteams” in the race; there are times when Jumbo seem to win when, how and where they want. Here it’s all in for Vingegaard with Küss, Van Baarle and Kelderman his mountain support crew. The biggest asset is Wout van Aert, the most powerful all-rounder in cycling, who could probably hope to win half a dozen stages if he was the team leader. What’s disconcerting is that Jumbo put out a strong squad to win this year’s Giro with Primoz Roglic, and they can afford to leave all of them out of the Tour including the Slovene.

Team Wilco Kelderman, Dylan van Baarle, Wout van Aert, Tiesj Benoot, Christopher Laporte, Nathan van Hooydonck, Sep Küss, Jonas Vingegaard

Main man Jonas Vingegaard – wraith-like Dane who had the climbing legs to break Tadej Pogacar when it mattered last year, but the second Tour win never comes easy

There’s plenty of value for money here. It’s all about stage wins. The 2019 world champion Mads Pedersen is the best bet, but Skjelmose took the recent Tour of Switzerland while Ciccone landed stages in Catalonia and the Dauphiné. They boast three newly crowned national champions in Skjelmose, Kirsch and Simmons.

Giulio Ciccone, Tony Gallopin, Alex Kirsch, Juan Pedro Lopez, Mads Pedersen, Quinn Simmons, Mattias Skjelmose, Jesper Stuyven

Main man Mads Pedersen – he has stage wins at the Giro and Paris-Nice to his name this year, and will have a good chance on the hillier days at the Tour

Lotto-Dstny

Relegated to the second division last season, Belgium’s oldest team put most of their eggs in a basket labelled Caleb Ewan. Most of the team will be dedicated to ensuring he is in the right place at sprint finishes; strongmen Vermeersch and Campenaerts may be let off the leash on the non-sprint days.

Team Caleb Ewan, Jasper de Buyst, Jacopo Guarnieri, Florian Vermeersch, Frederik Frison, Victor Campenaerts, Pascal Eenkhorn, Maxim van Gils

Main man Caleb Ewan – five Tour stages to his name so far, one more would make Lotto’s Tour.

There’s a mid-table look to cycling’s oldest team, a far cry from when Miguel Indurain won five Tours in a row. Mas can target the podium, and Jorgensen is one of the most exciting prospects in the sport, but the fact he’s rumoured to be moving on in 2024 speaks volumes.

Team Alex Aranburu, Ruben Guerreiro, Gorka Izaguirre, Matteo Jorgensen, Enric Mas, Gregor Mühlberger, Neilson Oliveira, Antonio Pedrero

Main man Enric Mas – often the bridesmaid never the bride, the Spaniard is one of the big group targeting third place behind the Big Two while aiming for better if they falter.

Soudal-Quickstep

Belgian winning machine have converted themselves to a Grand Tour team led by Remco Evenepoel, who sits this one out. Here it’s about fidgety Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe and sprinter Fabio Jakobsen. “Juju” is under pressure from manager Patrick Lefevère and needs to find his former magic touch, while Jakobsen needs to at least repeat his stage win of last year; his five victories this year suggest that’s on the cards with the support of top lead-out man Mørkøv. Asgreen, Lampaert and Cavagna will support Alaphilippe in the hills and go in the breaks when he’s having a recovery day.

Team Julian Alaphilippe, Yves Lampaert, Tim Decelercq, Dries Devenyns, Fabio Jakobsen, Kasper Asgreen, Michael Mørkøv, Remi Cavagna

Main man Julian Alaphilippe – double world champion endured a torrid 2022 but has won twice this year and will be a favourite for stage one.

Julian Alaphilippe checks over his shoulder during this year’s Criterium du Dauphine.

TotalEnergies

Once a reservoir of developing French talent, now a home for stars past their sell-by dates such as Boasson-Hagen, Oss and Sagan, while French riders Turgis and Latour are no longer cutting edge. Between them they will deliver various near misses, while a stage win would be a miracle.

Team Edvald Boasson-Hagen, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Steff Cras, Valentin Ferron, Pierre Latour, Daniel Oss, Peter Sagan, Anthony Turgis

Main man Peter Sagan. Once a mega star, the multiple world champion, Tour stage winner and record points winner is now on his farewell Tour.

UAE Team Emirates

Cycling’s other “super team”, with a wealth of strong men to rival Jumbo-Visma in support of double Tour winner Tadej Pogacar, who had taken on another dimension this year with his wins in the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold and Flèche Wallonne before his untimely crash in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Behind “Pog”, Adam Yates has hit form in the Critérium du Dauphiné and won the Tour de Romandie back in May, so should prove a decent understudy. After illness ripped through their ranks in last year’s Tour, arguably contributing to Pogacar’s defeat to Vingegaard, every cough, sniffle and minor headache will be viewed with suspicion.

Team Mikkel Bjerg, Felix Grossschartner, Vejgard Stake Langen, Rafal Majka, Tadej Pogacar, Marc Soler, Matteo Trentin, Adam Yates

Main man Tadej Pogacar – cycling’s biggest winner is targeting a third Tour; wins in his national road and time trial titles suggests the form has returned after a hiatus to nurse a broken wrist.

Invited to their first Tour, the Norwegian squad have a solid reputation for developing new talent and making the most of their resources. They bring a promising line-up fronted by veteran sprinter Kristoff, climbers Johanneson and Traeen, a strong all rounder in Waerenschold, plus the gritty Rasmus Tiller at the helm.

Team Jonas Abrahamsen, Torsten Traeen, Søren Waerenschold, Anton Charmig, Jonas Gregaard, Rasmus Tiller, Tobias Halland Johannesen, Alexander Kristoff

Main man Alexander Kristoff – is long in the tooth but could still snag a stage win; in a team of Tour debutants his experience will be crucial.

Changes can be made until Friday 30 June. Team line-ups correct at time of publication

The Top 10 Climbing Performances of 2022

klimmers tour 2023

As the 2022 cycling season has come to a close, it is time to rank the top 10 climbing performances of the year. An admittedly hard task, considering the multitude of impressive performances from various riders throughout the year. The climbing speeds especially exploded when summer arrived after the Giro d’Italia, with eight of the ten entries in the list coming after the month of May.

We have determined this ranking based primarily on w/kg per duration, but other factors like altitude, temperature and difficulty of the race up to that point (measured using spent kj/kg/h) are accounted for subjectively, as it has not been definitively established how much such factors affect the eventual w/kg performance on a final climb. The duration of the effort also has to be exceed 5 minutes for it to be counted as a climbing performance, meaning short efforts like Dylan Teuns on Mur de Huy will not appear on this list. All estimated w/kg are normalised etalon w/kg for the average 60kg rider.

Honourable Mentions

With the large number of high level performances, it was impossible to include even some absolutely elite efforts that would have surely made the top 10 in other years. Here are some of the efforts that were close to the Top 10 in no particular order:

  • Mikel Landa, Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz on Santa Cristina (Giro d’Italia Stage 16): 36’15min @ 6,20w/kg.
  • Ruben Guerreiro on Mont Ventoux (Mt Ventoux Denivele Challenge): 58’36min @ 5,98w/kg.
  • Mauricio Moreira on Senhora Assuncao (GP Jornal de Noticias Stage 2): 13’23min @ 7,14w/kg.
  • Remco Evenepoel on Collau Fancuaya (Vuelta a Espana Stage 8): 27’29min @ 6,42w/kg.
  • Remco Evenepoel on Penas Blancas (Vuelta a Espana Stage 12): 45’40min @ 6,19w/kg.

10. Jonas Vingegaard, Plateau de Solaison

Criterium du Dauphine Stage 8, Plateau de Solaison (11,3km; 9,07%)

6,32w/kg for 34’34min.

Jumbo Visma were not required to do more than defend on the final stage of the Dauphiné, as Primoz Roglic had already acquired a comfortable GC lead on the previous day, but the Dutch team was determined to put on a show before Le Tour. Kruijswijk managed to reduce the group to just four riders with a very long and strong pull, before Vingegaard and Roglic took off and dropped Ben O’Connor, the final challenger.

The surprising part were the problems of elected leader Roglic to follow Vingegaard, who eventually slowed down for the Slovenian. This led to Ben O’Connor coming back to losing just 15 seconds, as the two Jumbo leaders celebrated the Stage and GC double victory. This high level w/kg performance after a decently hard stage (13,21kj/kg/h for 3:31h) in 30°C heat while even slowing down for Roglic was certainly a sign of things to come from Jonas Vingegaard in Le Tour de France.

9. Jai Hindley on Passo Fedaia

Giro d’Italia Stage 20, Passo Fedaia (5,3km; 11,11%)

6,51w/kg for 18’50min

The only effort from the Giro d’Italia on this list is also the one which decided the race, when Jai Hindley dropped Richard Carapaz for good on the final road stage, after INEOS set an inexplicably high tempo on the first part of the ascent. The w/kg of this effort are clearly the worst in the top 10 and lower than some performances that missed out on the ranking, but the conditions in which this performance was achieved make it so impressive.

The stage itself was already very hard with 13,98kj/kg/h for 4:30h including the altitude climbs Passo San Pellegrino, Passo Pordoi and Passo Fedaia with the performance right at the end of three weeks of racing. All of this explains the large gaps Jai Hindley created with his Fedaia ascension that missed the climbing record of Enrico Zaina by 23 seconds, but was faster than Marco Pantani in 1998.

8. Remco Evenepoel on Gaustatoppen

Tour of Norway Stage 3, Gaustatoppen Stavsro (10,5km; 8,70%)

6,50w/kg for 30’23min

The performance that shocked the cycling world. After months of struggles on the steep climbs – 41 seconds behind Vlasov on Maigmo Tibi, 4’01min behind Pogacar on the Tirreno queen stage and 24 seconds behind the lead group on Arrate – Remco Evenepoel finally exploded the watts and released a ‘Generational’ w/kg performance in the Tour of Norway, a race which he absolutely dominated with three stage wins and the GC title.

The conditions to perform such an effort were certainly near perfect with the low altitude, ideal temperature and a medium difficulty stage with 12,68kj/kg/h for 4:01h, but it was still easily the most impressive performance of the year at that point of the season. Both Remco Evenepoel and Jay Vine, who finished second with 6,34w/kg for 30’49min, would eventually improve on there performances in La Vuelta a Espana some months later.

klimmers tour 2023

7. Remco Evenepoel on Les Praeres

Vuelta a Espana Stage 9, Les Praeres (3,77km; 13,29%)

6,83w/kg for 15’06min

After two huge performances already in the first week on Pico Jano and Collau Fancuaya the previous day, Remco Evenepoel managed another impressive effort on the Rampas Inhumanas of Les Praeres in Stage 9 of La Vuelta. Evenepoel broke the climbing record of Simon Yates and put 34 seconds into Juan Ayuso, the closest challenger. This impressive display of strength after a hard stage with 13,87kj/kg/h for 4:03h dropped the other GC contenders within the first kilometre of the climb and concluded a perfect first week for Remco Evenepoel, who was now 1:12min ahead of Mas and 1:53min ahead of Roglic in GC before the first rest day.

6. Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard on Mende

Tour de France Stage 14, Cote de la Croix Neuve – Mende (3,05km; 10,33%)

Tadej Pogacar: 7,36w/kg for 9’05min Jonas Vingegaard: 7,26w/kg for 9’05min

After the dramatic blowup of Pogacar on Col du Granon, he was forced to attack at every opportunity for the remainder of Le Tour to gain back the 2’22min GC deficit to Jonas Vingegaard. On Stage 14 the Slovenian was especially aggressive, already attacking in the early hilly parts of the stage, but Jumbo-Visma managed to control him despite some anxious moments. The main attack then came on the Cote de la Croix Neuve, the most famous 10 minute w/kg test in cycling.

This strong attack immediately blew everyone away except for Jonas Vingegaard, who was glued to the wheel of Pogacar throughout the entire ascent, seemingly not even breathing. The names of the only three riders that ever climbed this hill faster than the two dominators of the Tour de France 2022 confirm just how fast Pogacar and Vingegaard were: Marco Pantani (1995, 8’59min), Miguel Indurain (1995, 9’00min) and Bjarne Riis (1995, 9’00min).

5. Brandon McNulty on Stage 17 of Le Tour de France

Tour de France Stage 17, Col de Val Louron Azet West (8,34km; 7,94%) and Peyragudes (8,08km; 8,03%)

Col de Val Louron Azet West: 6,58w/kg for 22’24min Peyragudes: 6,23w/kg for 22’57min

Brandon McNulty was much stronger in the Pyrenees in the latter part of the Tour de France, having been dropped by Nathan Van Hooyndonck’s pace on Col de la Croix de Fer in the Alpes. He showed flashes on Mende, setting up the Pogacar attack and then probably could have won Stage 16 to Foix from the breakaway had he not been on teammate duties. His true day of glory however was Stage 17, the stage made for Tadej Pogacar, featuring multiple 20-25min climbs with a consistent moderate gradient, on which UAE hoped to drop Jonas Vingegaard.

After Mikkel Bjerg had already achieved a career climbing performance, reducing the group to less than 15 riders on Hourquette d’Ancizan, it was McNulty’s turn on Val Louron. He delivered more than maybe even UAE expected from him, demolishing the penultimate climb at 6,58w/kg with only Pogacar and Vingegaard able to survive in the draft. On the final climb to Peyragudes it became clear that Pogacar would not be able to drop Vingegaard, as McNulty kept riding on the front at a lower, but still high tempo until the final ramp at 500m to go, on which Pogacar managed to sprint for the stage win.

4. Remco Evenepoel on Erlaitz

Klasika San Sebastian, Erlaitz (3,8km; 10,74%)

7,25w/kg for 11’56min

After a disappointing Tour de Suisse, Remco Evenepoel returned from an altitude camp to San Sebastian even stronger than in Norway. The young Belgian initiated a 45km solo win with a tremendous Erlaitz ascent at 7,25w/kg, dropping an in-form Simon Yates off the wheel. It remains the best pure w/kg performance of the entire season.

Performing at such a level is naturally easier in a one day race, but doing it to set up a 45km solo to win by 1:58min showed his absolute superiority over the strong competition. It was certainly a completely different victory than in 2019, when he became the youngest rider ever to win a UCI World Tour race. Back then he was dropping on early climbs and had to rely on the peloton to underestimate a late breakaway of him to win the race.

3. Jay Vine and Remco Evenepoel on Pico Jano

Vuelta a Espana Stage 6, Pico Jano (12,4km; 6,66%)

Jay Vine: 6,58w/kg for 29’53min Remco Evenepoel: 6,50w/kg for 30’08min

The two superclimbers of the Tour of Norway immediately delivered on the first mountain stage of the Vuelta a Espana, creating massive gaps on a very shallow climb with a huge drafting benefit. Both riders were probably on the same level as each other, but with Vine attacking away from the slow peloton earlier and not a GC threat, he effectively got a head start on Evenepoel which awarded him with the stage win and his first professional victory. Remco Evenepoel was slowly closing in on him from behind, putting 1’12min into Roglic and the main GC group at the same time on a stage where few GC gaps, if any, were expected.

Mas and Ayuso also performed close to their career best numbers with 6,26w/kg and 6,23w/kg respectively, which indicates that the conditions were favourable, such as the low altitude and the stage coming early in the race. That being said, with 6,20w/kg for 19’05min on Collada de Brenes just before, they did not walk up to the base of the climb.

2. Jonas Vingegaard on Col du Granon

Tour de France Stage 11, Col du Granon (11,28km; 9,20%)

6,10w/kg for 35’55min

Stage 11 of Le Tour was shaping up to be one for the ages right from the start, being ridden exceptionally hard even before Roglic and Vingegaard started rolling attacks on the Col du Galibier. This was compounded by Pogacar even attacking them himself, which likely cost him a decent amount of time at the end of the stage. He rode the high altitude Galibier at 5,54w/kg for 48’46min with countless tempo changes, with his normalised power likely being much higher than the average w/kg. Vingegaard, drafting a bit more, rode at 5,50w/kg on the Galibier – already good numbers at altitude, but it was only the penultimate climb of the day.

The real gaps were created on the final climb to Col du Granon, where Jonas Vingegaard attacked with 4,6km to go after the very hard pacing of Rafal Majka, climbing the last 15’00min at 6,47w/kg. This is one of the all-time great altitude climbing performances, with which the Danish climber effectively won the Tour de France 2022, putting 2’51min into his Slovenian rival.

1. Jonas Vingegaard on Hautacam

Tour de France Stage 18, Hautacam (13,33km; 7,95%)

Spandelles: 6,17w/kg for 29’57min Hautacam: 6,32w/kg for 36’30min

The final mountain stage of Le Tour was symbolic of the entire event, with Jumbo Visma dominating the stage from start to finish. As Van Aert and Benoot once again joined the breakaway as satellite riders, it became another extremely hard stage with 15,9kj/kg/h for 2:40h before Spandelles including ~5,1w/kg for over 50 minutes on the Col d’Aubisque. The combination of this hard racing, the strong attacks on the penultimate climb, the third week effect and the high w/kg performances on both Spandelles and Hautacam make this THE performance of 2022. Pogacar attempted to distance Vingegaard on the Spandelles climb, hitting him with three big attacks, but the Dane was comfortably following all of them.

The final climb to Hautacam has been the stage for many career-defining performances in the past, including Indurain in 1994, Riis in 1996, Armstrong in 2000, more recently Nibali in 2014 and now Jonas Vingegaard in 2022. Sepp Kuss pulled at over 6,2w/kg for the first 23 minutes, before Van Aert was caught as last survivor from the early break and delivered a short but very hard final pull that even distanced Pogacar. The yellow jersey was still clearly far from done at that point, as he extended the gap to Pogacar to 1’04min and even climbed the last 4,5km faster than Bjarne Riis in 1996 – the greatest climbing performance in history and the greatest climbing performance of 2022, both achieved by Danes on the Hautacam.

klimmers tour 2023

With four entries on the list each, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel have to be considered the two best climbers of 2022, while Tadej Pogacar ranks behind them in third. Pogacar may only have one entry, but he consistently delivers great performances in all WorldTour races that he enters, however this level just was not quite enough to match peak Vingegaard in the Tour de France. The best climber of 2021, Primoz Roglic, could not finish a Grand Tour this year and also seemingly regressed a little bit based on Turini and Solaison, making him fall to fourth behind the elite trio of Vingegaard – Evenepoel – Pogacar. It remains to be seen if the surprises of 2022, Brandon McNulty and Jay Vine, will be able to consistently perform on the level they only showed on a few occasions this year. If they are able to do so, they will immediately jump into the highest tiers of GC riders.

Below you can see all performances in the Top 10 in a graph with standard trend-lines. In 2022, we saw five performances above the red ‘Generational’ trend-line, with the one of Mauricio Moreira in GP Jornal de Noticias even missing out on a spot in the overall top 10, due to the favourable conditions. The reason for Vingegaard not performing at such a pure w/kg level is the way Le Tour unfolded with attacks and high w/kg on the penultimate climb of nearly every mountain stage in hot conditions.

klimmers tour 2023

In the 21st century, the number of ‘Generational’ performances in road stages in a single year was only improved upon in 2000 (six) and matched in 2006 and 2020. In those two years, four of the five ‘Generational’ performances were achieved on a single stage (Monte Bondone 2006 and Piancavallo 2020) and the overall climbing level was consistently below 2022 standards. Considering the multitude of high level performances on more than one climb in the same stage during 2022, the overall climbing level of the 2022 season has to be considered the best since at least 2000.

do you think the fact there were no “generational” climbing performances during Skys dominance now paint there no doping proclamations in a more favourable light?

Jonas has the lowest w/kg bit he is so small that it makes up for it

Mark Cavendish Abandons 2023 Tour de France on Stage 8

The Manx Missile will end his career tied with Eddy Merckx for the all-time Tour de France stage wins record.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 2

Mark Cavendish abandoned the 2023 Tour de France after a Stage 8 crash, prematurely ending his final Tour. Cavendish is tied with Eddy Merckx at 34 Tour de France stage wins—the most in history.

Cavendish was involved in a crash in the peloton and was lying on the ground, holding his clavicle. He was unable to finish the stage and officially made the decision to withdraw.

His abandonment comes one day after Cavendish nearly won a Stage 7 sprint, but an apparent mechanical issue cost him a shot at sole possession of the record.

Cavendish, now 38, broke into professional cycling in 2005. A few years later, he won his first Tour de France stage on Stage 5. He added three more stage victories during that 2008 Tour, establishing himself as the premiere sprinter in the world. In 2011, he won both the green jersey points competition at the Tour de France and the rainbow jersey as world champion.

Cav won TdF stages in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2021. In 2021, Cavendish enjoyed a comeback season, winning three stages to tie with Merckx for the all-time record.

In 2022, Cavendish was left off the Deceuninck–Quick-Step team for the Tour de France in a controversial decision by team manager Patrick Lefevere, so he didn’t get his shot to break Merckx’ record. He left the Quick-Step squad at the end of last year, and after months of contract speculation, he signed with Astana Qazaqstan for the 2023 season.

Award winning film composer Hans Zimmer will bring his smash-hit tour Hans Zimmer Live to North America this Fall with arena dates across the United States and Canada, including a birthday show at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Following a sold-out European run, the tour marks the North American return of the “Hollywood Rebel” (according to the BBC) who rocked Coachella in 2017 with his outstanding live band and orchestra. Audiences will be swept away from the sound of the first note and journey through an array of well-loved scores throughout Zimmer’s career. In a groundbreaking audio and visual show, the multiple Academy Award® and Grammy winning Zimmer, his band and the orchestra will perform a selection of the composer’s scores from some of cinema’s biggest films. The newly arranged concert suites include music from Gladiator , Pirates of the Caribbean , The Dark Knight , Interstellar , The Lion King , The Last Samurai and Dune , for which Zimmer received his second Academy Award®.

I’m thrilled to return to perform in North America with my wonderful band and excited to share this phenomenal show,” said Zimmer. “I love this feeling of uniting my family of extraordinary musicians with you, the audience. Just an unbelievable group of talents, who in my opinion, are some of the best musicians in the world. But nothing would have meaning without the good grace and support of you, the other part of the family – the audience. Ultimately, the music connects us all, and I promise you this: we will always play our best, straight from the heart.”

“Hans Zimmer LIVE” features more of two hours of new reimagined arrangements of some of the most popular compositions by the L.A.-based composer icon. The album was recorded during the highly successful same-named concert tour in Europe in spring of 2022 for which Zimmer created new “suites” from some of his most recognizable themes and melodies from the Academy Award © -winning scores for Dune and The Lion King, as well as such contemporary classics as The Dark Knight, X Men: Dark Phoenix, Dunkirk, Gladiator, Inception, Interstellar, The Last Samurai, Man of Steel, James Bond: No Time to Die, Pirates of the Caribbean and Wonder Woman 1984. Together with his 20 piece-band “The Disruptive Collective” featuring a gallery of long-time musical companions, Odessa Orchestra & Friends and Choir, Hans Zimmer has created an epic musical spectacle melding atmospheric classical arrangements and electronic elements into the powerful sound of a rock band.

klimmers tour 2023

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

4. Stockholm, Sweden — total average cost: $935, safety score: 53.86

3. Hamburg, Germany — total average cost: $903, safety score: 57.51

2. Gelsenkirchen, Germany — total average cost: $749, safety score: 51.33

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

2024 PGA Championship: Who is the favorite to win at Valhalla?

Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win this week's PGA Championship.

Andrew Redington/Getty Images

The 2024 PGA Championship is here, with the best-of-the-best in men’s golf ready to fight for the Wanamaker tophy starting Thursday. But who is the favorite to win the PGA Championship this week? Find out below.

2024 PGA Championship favorite

The pre-tournament favorite to win this week’s PGA is the player who has been the favorite all season: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler .

Scheffler heads to Valhalla with +450 odds-to-win, far shorter odds than the man who won the Wells Fargo on Sunday, World No. 2 Rory McIlroy (+800 odds-to-win).

Ludvig Aberg

2024 PGA Championship picks to win: Here’s who we are betting on at Valhalla

Scheffler’s odds are what they are for a reason. He has dominated the PGA Tour in 2024. In 10 starts, Scheffler was four wins, a runner-up and nine top-10 finishes. His only finish outside the top 10 was a T17 at the American Express in January. His last five finishes? An other-worldly 1-1-T2-1-1.

And his wins haven’t only come at regular Tour events. Scheffler won his second Masters title last month, and he won the Players Championship before that. From many people’s perspectives, it’s truly Scheffler’s tournament to lose.

And until Sunday, we weren’t even sure if Scheffler would play the PGA Championship. Dating back to Masters, Scheffler had said that if his pregnant wife were to go into labor, he would withdraw from whatever event he was playing to be there for the birth of their first child.

The waiting game continued into last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, a Signature Event, which Scheffler skipped as the baby’s due date neared. According to an unconfirmed report from Bob Harig, Scheffler and his wife Meredith welcomed their baby over the weekend, and as a result, Scheffler will indeed play at Valhalla.

Rickie Fowler to switch into standard-length, custom orange Jailbird putter

Change Text Size

GolfWRX.com

Rickie Fowler, the undisputed Odyssey Jailbird king of 2023, is likely making a major switch-up to his popular putter setup this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

First, a brief recap of how we got here.

Fowler was struggling with his putting leading into 2023, but the elongated putter and Jailbird mallet head helped quell his issues.

“I was very shocked, because I never really looked into anything that was longer, counterbalanced, or anything like that,” Fowler said in 2023. “It’s very interesting, but it’s kind of freeing me up in a way. I’m not changing stroke-wise, or setup, not gripping anything differently than my normal length putter. I just feel like it’s, I don’t know, kind of helping me do some things, and I don’t have to think about it.”

After the putter switch was proven effective, his fellow PGA TOUR players started to take notice, and some even switched into a replica putter for themselves. Most famously, Wyndham Clark used the Fowler-esque Jailbird putter setup to win the 2023 U.S. Open, and the Jailbird went onto become a top-10 equipment story of 2023 .

In response to the Jailbird craze, Odyssey has released a limited-edition Jailbird 380 putter , and has included various Jailbird profile options into its new Ai-ONE series of putters.

The Jailbird craze hasn’t really slowed down in 2024, either. According to Odyssey rep Joe Toulon, there are about 18-20 Jailbird putter users on the PGA TOUR.

Most recently, Akshay Bhatia won the 2024 Valero Texas Open using a broomstick style Odyssey Jailbird 380 putter and Webb Simpson is switching into a replica of that putter at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Now, Fowler, who essentially started the whole Jailbird craze, is making a significant change to his putter setup.

Fowler, who has had a couple weeks off since the 2024 RBC Heritage, started experimenting with a new, custom-orange Jailbird 380 head that’s equipped with a standard 35-inch putter build, rather than his previous 38-inch counter-balanced setup.

According to Fowler, while he still likes the look and forgiveness of his Jailbird putter head, he’s looking to re-incorporate more feel into his hands during the putting stroke.

He told GolfWRX.com on Tuesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship that the 38-inch counterbalanced setup “served its purpose” by helping him to neutralize his hands during the stroke, but now it’s time to try the standard-length putter with a standard-size SuperStroke Pistol Tour grip to help with his feel and speed control.

Although Fowler was also spotted testing standard-length mallets from L.A.B. Golf and Axis1 on Tuesday, he confirmed that the custom Odyssey Jailbird 380 is the putter he’ll use this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

We’ll keep an eye on Fowler going forward to see how the change works, and any further testing he conducts, but for now, Fowler is back into a standard-length putter.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour On Track to Become Highest-Grossing Global Tour in History

The 2023 shows earned more than $900 million, Billboard estimates. That total could nearly double next year.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ’s The Eras Tour is poised to become the highest-grossing global tour of all time, according to Billboard ’s estimates.

While no official numbers have been reported yet, Swift’s tour should pass current record-holder Elton John ’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour with more than $900 million in ticket sales so far.

On Sunday (Nov. 26), Swift played her last scheduled show of the year, wrapping an intense run of 66 concerts in the United States, Mexico and South America. Representatives for The Eras Tour have not yet reported official revenue or attendance figures to Billboard Boxscore or any other trade journal or news entity, but the enormity of The Eras Tour is impossible to ignore, with a total that amounts to a staggering average of nearly $14 million per show.

9 Things Other Artists Can Learn From Taylor Swift’s Blockbuster Eras Tour

Dating back almost 40 years, all Boxscore rankings are based on figures reported to Billboard . Data is reported from a variety of official industry sources, from artist managers and agents to promoters and venue executives. Reporting has always been voluntary, and some artists, venues and promoters opt to withhold data from representation on our charts. It is not uncommon for artists to not report — or to wait until the end of a tour, which is still more than a year away in Swift’s case — though it’s rare that such a well-documented blockbuster tour, in contention for top year-end honors, is not submitted. Swift’s abstention disqualifies her from appearing on year-end Boxscore charts .

Swift kicked off The Eras Tour in Glendale, Ariz., on March 17, playing 53 domestic shows before wrapping at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., outside Los Angeles, on Aug. 9. She hit a total of 20 U.S. cities, and 11 of those venues have provided attendance figures to Billboard . Based on those numbers, as well as estimates based on aggressive scaling at the other nine stadiums, Swift likely sold 3.3 million tickets over 53 shows in the United States, or an average of 63,000 tickets per show.

Sources close to the tour point to an average domestic ticket price of around $252. This is in line with the prices for the summer’s other major concert event, Beyoncé ’s Renaissance World Tour, which maintained a $135 ticket in Europe and a $253 ticket in North America. While ticket prices might dip in certain markets and bloom in others, using that number as an average puts the U.S. leg of The Eras Tour at $838.3 million. That total gross spreads out to $15.8 million per show, a staggering figure that exceeds recent tours by Bad Bunny , Beyoncé, and The Rolling Stones , each of which had giant totals of their own.

That projected $838 million haul is more than enough to make Eras the highest-grossing U.S. and North American tour ever. John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour holds the official Boxscore title, with $567.7 million in the United States and Canada. That total reflects 135 shows over a span of four years, compared to Swift’s 53 shows in less than six months.

Moreover, The Eras Tour’s U.S. gross would situate it as the second-highest grossing tour of all time based on global figures, before even crossing the border. John’s farewell tour remains the official record-holder with $939.1 million.

Since wrapping the Eras Tour’s U.S. leg, Swift played four shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol (Aug. 24-27) and, more recently, nine South American shows, spread between Buenos Aires in Argentina and Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Those dates bring her much closer to John’s global record, even based on relatively conservative projections. But as we’ve seen with virtually every worldwide stadium tour in the last two years, the post-pandemic surge in ticket prices hasn’t been as severe outside the United States.

Further, these are Swift’s first shows in these Latin American markets. That means pent-up demand likely drove huge sales, though her base isn’t quite as explosive there as it is in the States.

Taylor Swift's Biggest Scalper for the Eras Tour: Her Fans

Based on estimates considering the high end of grosses and ticket prices for each Latin American venue’s post-pandemic history, The Eras Tour likely earned another $60 million to $75 million and more than 750,000 tickets from those 13 shows.

In all, Billboard estimates that Swift has generated $906.1 million and sold 4.1 million tickets in 2023 across all shows in the United States, Mexico and South America. That would unofficially make The Eras Tour the biggest tour of 2023. And when considering Swift’s total revenue from the tour, it doesn’t even account for merchandise sales, sponsorships, music streaming and sales boosts, or her self-produced and released Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film.

Swift is scheduled to resume The Eras Tour on Feb. 7 with four shows at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. Then, she’ll play seven shows in Australia and six in Singapore. In May, she kicks off a 50-date run in Europe before returning to North America for 18 shows in new markets, including the tour’s first entry into Canada. In all, that’s 85 shows to go, with the possibility of more to come, considering her recent concert additions to runs in London and Vancouver.

These upcoming international legs are already more ambitious than any previous Swift tour. While this year’s 53 U.S. shows are in line with what she did on 2018’s Reputation Stadium Tour and 2015’s The 1989 World Tour, those treks included just six and seven shows in Europe, respectively — a fraction of next year’s slate of 50.

8 Sweetest Moments Between Taylor Swift & Young Swifties on The Eras Tour

If we use the comparison between Beyoncé’s recent European and North American grosses as a north star, in Europe, Swift could be looking at $8.5 million per show, or about $420 million over the entire leg. And even if next year’s North American shows dip from 2023’s record-breakers, the U.S. and Canada shows could add another $240 million to 260 million. Including the 17 shows in Asia and Australia, The Eras Tour is likely headed toward a total gross of $1.6 billion to $1.7 billion by the end of 2024. It will be the first in history to earn more than $1 billion in ticket sales and will set Swift far apart from her competitors. If figures skew toward the higher end of what’s possible, she could double John’s current record gross.

Representatives for Swift did not respond to a request for comment on Billboard ‘s estimates at press time.

Vintage 2023: nature delivered what consumers desired.

This is a general overview of Bordeaux vintage 2023. Specific wine tasting notes for some 200 wines are in separate articles for the Bordeaux Left Bank , Bordeaux Right Bank and Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well as for white/rosé wines .

Additional tasting notes are provided at the VinoVoices website .

Each year new trends arrive in the international wine world. Consider those of the past decade: aging wines in clay amphorae, planting more indigenous grapes and expanding agroforestry. This year’s trend in much of France appears to be using larger oak barrels—400 or 500 liters or even more sizable wooden ‘foudre’—as well as lower alcohol (even zero alcohol) combined with increased acidity. This low alcohol/high acidity combination (which can be manipulated through, say, maceration) results in two buzzwords now promulgated by wine producers for vintage 2023: ‘freshness’ and ‘drinkability.’

Such trends often appear unexpectedly, then mysteriously turn ubiquitous. While traveling in different wine regions of France during past weeks—Rhone Valley, Languedoc, Bordeaux—as well as in Italy, I’ve spoke with dozens of winemakers and sipped hundreds of wines. This includes ample amounts from the left and right banks of Bordeaux, as well as Bordeaux Entre-Deux-Mers.

Thoughts on Bordeaux Vintage 2023

Striking acidity within much of Bordeaux vintage 2023 is more pronounced and better integrated with fruit than that of vintage 2021, as well as more homogenous across the region in comparison. That’s a personal opinion. Does it match the data? According to Colin Hay of The Drinks Business , the Merlot total acidity (in grams/liter) was matched only by 2021 in the past five years, while the acidity of Cabernet Sauvignon is higher than that of the previous two vintages (at various test vineyards in Bordeaux; hence not necessarily a generalization valid for the entire region).

Such pronounced acidity can dovetail with current customer desires—lively wines that are ready to drink now and that highlight fresh fruit—meaning another glass please.

Some Pessac-Leognan whites from 2023 are magnificent with crackling acidity and superb balance. As heartily as I previously recommended 2021 red Burgundy (high quality and scarcity) and many of the better Bordeaux whites in from vintage 2017, I now recommend Pessac Leognan 2023 whites. Sizzling, lively, crisp tightrope acidity balanced with fruit and consistent excellent quality—more so than for Graves in general.

Tannins for 2023 red wines often appear unusually creamy , which—combined with perky acidity—may give this vintage an edgy flavor profile and aging ability to be raved over and sought twenty years down the road (and, yes, also after five, ten and thirty years), with those who drink it likely calling it fresh and even velvety. And yet there were also tannins that appear to have been disjointed from a harmonious acidity/fruit integration.

I may have been oblivious during past En Primeurs, but are more producers now serving reds slightly chilled to accentuate precise tannins and clean acidity? Regardless—applause for that action.

Prince Robert of Luxembourg of Cht. La Mission Haut-Brion

Saint-Émilion includes distinct and voluptuous stunning reds blessed with tannic/acidic harmony and compact deep dense black fruit reminiscent of vintage 2018, but some with those lava fluid tannins enveloped within.

For red wines, 2023 Bordeaux shares much of the buoyant fruit and open energy of vintage 2019, the coy tannic confidence of 2020 and the pronounced acidity of 2021—although rounder, more focused, refined and supremely successful at enveloping components of fruit, alcohol and tannins. The vintage also includes a sliver of 2015 bright sunshine brilliance. And what about those occasional 2023 creamy tannins that are almost erotic so that you consider it risqué even mentioning them? As though from another planet—and fully welcome. In some candlelit cellar with a group of select friends in the year 2050—drinking vintage 2023 may be associated with and remembered by such fluidly melting tannins and brazen oval acidity.

Louisa Nguyen of Château Chantegrive, Graves, Bordeaux

Having been in the southern hemisphere last year, I am still unfamiliar with the reputed great vintage of ‘22, but have otherwise been tasting Bordeaux since 2015.

The above includes only personal opinion. Below are other insights shared by seasoned professionals regarding Bordeaux vintage 2023.

Vintage 2023—Winemakers And Producers Speak

Hubert du Boüard of Château Angelus in Saint-Émilion spoke about 2023 vintage conditions:

“2023 was more sunny than hot, and ripeness comes with sunshine more than with heat. Spring was difficult with rain. But the berries were healthy—fresh and with violets on the nose. Vibrancy when I tasted the grapes. Very juicy. It is not a classic vintage, because you have tension and freshness, but classic does not have this creaminess.”

Pierre Courdurié (R) and Jean-Charles Joris, Saint-Émilion

Pierre Courdurié from Croix de Labrie in Saint-Émilion summarized the vintage so:

“A vintage for winemakers and terroir. Indian summer gave excellent conditions for Merlot and Cabernets. 2023 is bright, aromatic, fresh, powerful, balanced, complex, elegant multi-layers with aromas of both black fruit and blueberries. Long persistence on the finish.

“Very, very brilliant vintage. Like 2022 in terms of structure and tannins. Like 2019 and 2016 for freshness. Flowering perfectly homogeneous. Winter was mild and dry. Summer hot but not excessively. A lot of storms and the need to be vigilant for mildew. More Cabernet Sauvignon than Cabernet Franc this year. Rounded, polished but direct. Strong attack and great length.”

Colin Hay of The Drinks Business wrote:

“The best wines – and, notably, the wines around which en primeur campaign are built and focused – are, with few exceptions, fabulously bright, crystalline, fresh and pure, but with significant aging potential too.”

Pierre Jean Larraque , owner of six Bordeaux vineyards and with a portfolio of wines from 57 Bordeaux appellations, wrote me after we met and sampled some of his wines from the 2023 vintage.

“The 2023 vintage was characterized by a warm and humid spring favorable to the development of mildew, the fight was intense and relentless. Flowering and veraison [onset of ripening; changing grape color] were rapid, suggesting a good homogeneity of the future harvest. The drier summer conditions combined with high temperatures triggered the Sauvignon Blanc harvest at the end of August, ending at the end of the first week of September with the Sémillon before the rains arrived. The latter were beneficial for the maturation of the reds, offering a perfect balance. The harvest began on September 18 with the Merlots and ended on October 6 with the Cabernet Sauvignons.”

Château owner and producer Pierre Jean Larraque in Blaye

Caroline Frey of Château La Lagune in the Haut-Médoc appellation spoke of too much mildew at the beginning of the season, but eventually wines that turned out to be “very pure, with good concentration.” Éric Perrin , co-owner of Château Carbonnieux in Pessac-Léognan, told of how harvest now begins a month earlier than it did 35 years ago, and how they realize “it is best for wines to give us pleasure in five years, as well as in twenty.”

Winemaker Gonzague de Lambert of Château de Ferrand in Saint-Émilion revealed that for vintage 2023 it was “very challenging because of the mildew and rain,” and added that: “It will be a great wine of Bordeaux—well integrated, balanced with lingering vibrancy.”

Olivia Rodrigo Adds Asia and Australia Legs to Guts World Tour

Olivia Rodrigo at the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Red Carpet held at the Microsoft Theatre on November 5, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Olivia Rodrigo will tour Asia and Australia for the first time in her career, the singer announced Wednesday. Rodrigo has added nine international dates to her massive “ Guts ” world tour for a total of 82 shows globally.

The new dates kick off Sept. 16 in Bangkok, Thailand and continue through Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Melbourne, and Sydney, wrapping up on Oct. 19 at Qudos Bank Arena. Additional dates may be added as Rodrigo wrote on social media, “Stay tuned, Manila!” Fans in the comment sections of her social posts are eager to hear when and if Rodrigo will also be adding Latin American dates to the trek but that has yet to be confirmed.

Popular on Variety

The “Guts” tour has since made stops in New York, Houston and Dublin, and will make its way towards London in the coming weeks. It will conclude on Oct. 18 in Sydney.

Tickets for the newly added Asia and Australia dates will be available starting with the American Express presale in select markets.

Rodrigo performed “Vampire” and “Get Him Back!” at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Tuesday night, following Lil Wayne as the second performer of the evening. It was her second-ever appearance at the show as Rodrigo made her VMAs debut in 2021 when she performed her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Good 4 U.”

“Guts” was released to high acclaim on Sept. 8 via Geffen Records and was preceded by two top 10 singles, “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” “Vampire” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Rodrigo the youngest artist to debut three No. 1 hits on the chart behind “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.”

In an interview with Capital FM in England , Rodrigo said she wrote much of the songs on “Guts” with the concept of an accompanying tour “in mind.”

“I think there’s a lot of fun songs,” she said. “I wrote the album with a tour in mind, so I think they’re all songs I wanted people to be able to scream in a crowd. Hopefully, that’s what’s achieved.” A similar teaser — in the form of a faux ticket advertising “Olivia Rodrigo: Guts The World Tour” — appeared in a lyric video for “Making the Bed,” the sixth track off “Guts.”

Rodrigo last toured North America and Europe in support of her debut album “Sour” in 2022. It started on April 5 in Portland and ended on July 7 in London. Gracie Abrams, Holly Humberstone, Chappell Roan and Baby Queen served as opening acts.
