Kokrajhar is a town located in the western part of the state of Assam, in northeastern India. The town is situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, near the border with the state of West Bengal. Kokrajhar district is an administrative district in the state of Assam in north-eastern India. The district headquarters are located at Kokrajhar town. The district occupies an area of 3,169.22 sq.km and had a population of 8,86,999 (2011 census). Kokrajhar city is located along the bank of Gourang River. The North East Indian Railways divides the city into two sides, north and the south. Kokrajhar city is the headquarters of Kokrajhar district and the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). Kokrajhar district is located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river. It forms the gateway to the Seven Sister States. Kokrajhar shares its boundary with Bongaigaon (now known as Chirang), Dhubri, West Bengal, Barpeta and Bhutan. Kokrajhar was originally a part of undivided Goalpara district. Till 1956, it was merely a small village with a railway station that connected it to the rest of the world. In 1957, when Bimala Prasad Chaliha was the Chief Minister of Assam, a new Civil Sub-division was created after carving out the northern part of Dhubri Sub-division and some parts of Goalpara Sub-division. This new sub-division was called Kokrajhar Sub-division. Goalpara district thus became divided into three sub-divisions. The area covered by the then Kokrajhar Sub-division consisted of five tracts of the Eastern Dooars, viz., Bijni, Sidli, Chirang, Ripu and Guma with a total area of 1569.9 square miles or 4065.88 square kilometres. On the 1st of July, 1983 the Kokrajhar Sub-division was upgraded into Kokrajhar district with the headquarter at Kokrajhar town. There were four police stations in the new district. They were Bijni, Sidli, Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon. The area of the district extended from the Manas river in the east to the Sonkosh on the west. In 1989, there was further reorganization of the districts and some new districts were created. Thus, about 40% of the total geographical area of Kokrajhar district was carved out for inclusion in the new district of Bongaigaon. The area delimited from Kokrajhar district to Bongaigaon covers the entire Bijni Revenue Circle along with 347.50 square kilometres of Sidli Circle. Later on 20 villages of Naikgaon G.P. with a total area 40.22 square km under Chapar Revenue Circle of Dhubri district was transferred to Kokrajhar district. The present geographical area of Kokrajhar district is estimated to be 3,169.22 square km. The district now has two revenue sub-divisions - Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon. The river Gongia which is known as Tipkai in the southern part is the natural boundary of two civil sub-divisions. Gossaigaon town is the headquarter of Gossaigaon Sub-division. Attractions   1) Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary : It is a wildlife sanctuary falling under Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. It is famous for the Golden Langur and is the second protected habitat for Golden Langur in India. Chakrashila Hill was first declared as reserve forest in 1966 and on July 14, 1994 it was recognized with the status of sanctuary by the Government of Assam. It covers an area of 45.568 km2 (4556.8 hectares). It is around 6 km from Kokrajhar town, 68 km from Dhubri town and 219 km from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati.   2) Onthai Gwlao : Located in Chandrapara near the bank of river Gwrang.   3) Mahamaya temple : Located on the border between Kokrajhar and Dhubri.   4) Thandwi Bineswar Brahma Memorial Park : Located in Bhatermary on the bank of River Gwrang.   5) Daimalu Park : Located in Kharigaon.   Economy The economy of Kokrajhar district is based on agriculture with 80 % of the population directly engaged in agricultural activities. The district has 89782 ha or nearly 25% is net cropped area. Of the net cropped area, 18392 ha is irrigated of the geographical area of the district. The present number of tractors & power tillers in existence in the district is 40 and 180 respectively. Similarly , the number of plough /draught animals available in the district is 104275. Education 1) Kokrajhar College : It is a premier educational institution located at the heart of the town which is the head quarter of Kokrajhar District and the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) of Assam. It was established in the year 1959 with arts stream only. The science stream was opened in the year 1964 and was brought under deficit system in 1972.The college was taken over as a full fledged Govt. College on 22nd August 2006 and  rechristened in the name and style of Kokrajhar Govt. College. Phone : 03661-270245 2) Commerce College, Kokrajhar : It was established in 17th March 1985 through a Resolution adopted in a Public Meeting held at PRAGATI BHAWAN, Kokrajhar under the Presidentship of Late R. N. Basumatary, the then Minister of Flood Control, Govt. of Assam to start its Academic Session from 1985-1986 under Section 23(e) of the Gauhati University Act, 1947.Accordingly the Gauhati University has accorded necessary Permission and Affiliation up to Degree (B.Com.) Standard in General and Major Courses under Gauhati University Act, 1947 Sec.21 (g) as amended up to date and approved by the Executive Council of the G.U. It came into existence with the active co-operation and selfless dedication of the people of Kokrajhar town. The college was started at the temporary venue, Rashtrabhasa Vidyapith school, Kokrajhar. On 26th July 1996, Mr. Rajendra Kumar Mushahary, the then state minister WPT and B.C. , Assam laid the foundation stone of the existing college building.
