Maren Morris Embarks on a ‘Humble Quest’ With New Album

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Maren Morris takes a journey to a better self on her upcoming third album Humble Quest , set for release on March 25. The announcement follows the release last week of the project’s first single, “ Circles Around This Town .”

Humble Quest , as Morris explains in a letter accompanying the announcement, was born out of the uncertainty of the pandemic. “What do you write about when the show can’t go on?” she says. “I think every songwriter in the world had a few months of that question at the beginning of the pandemic.”

She also writes about her dislike of the word “humble” and how often it’s used incorrectly or weaponized against people with some confidence. However, she concedes that the world’s ongoing health crisis was indeed a humbling experience for her.

“Shooting my mouth off one time too many humbled me, the death of a beloved friend and producer humbled me, motherhood and marriage humbled me,” she says. “’Humble’ began to feel more like a grounded state of understanding oneself; not so much by being relatable to or understood by all.”

Produced by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Kelly Clarkson), Humble Quest features 11 tracks in total. Morris is also a featured vocalist on her husband Ryan Hurd’s hit single “ Chasing After You ,” which is currently nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Morris is also a nominee for her song “Better Than We Found It.”

Maren Morris On 'Humble Quest' & Curating The Perfect Tour Vibe

As the “The Middle” singer embarks on a new tour, she reflects on her highly personal new album and creating a fully immersive concert experience.

Maren Morris hit the mainstream with her 2018 hit with Zedd, “The Middle,” a bright, infectiously catchy song about finding common ground and compromise. Until then, the artist was mostly known as a country singer, but the single represented that ever-elusive pop crossover moment. As Morris has continued to release impressive bodies of work — like 2019’s Girl and her latest album, Humble Quest (out March 25th via Columbia Nashville), it’s clear the singer’s story is richer than any one song can encapsulate.

Now, Morris is preparing for her upcoming tour — her first headliner since COVID hit. After two years of uncertainty and things coming together only to fall through, Morris tells NYLON she’s just excited to see her fans again. “We've played a couple shows [in Nashville] recently and a few festivals here and there, but when you're headlining and it's just solely your crowd in the audience, it just feels so magical and pure and transcendent,” she says.

The tour will match Humble Quest’s rootsy vibe — much of the album was written during the pandemic, meaning Morris was often just picking up an acoustic guitar or going to the piano and pouring out her feelings, rather than meeting with “a ton of track guys who are making beats” the way she did for previous work. “We didn't want to overly flourish anything, because the songs didn't need that,” Morris says of the very personal album, which stuns from soaring opener “Circles Around This Town” all the way through to the heartbreaking closer, “What Would This World Do?”, a tribute to her late friend and producer Busbee .

So when it came to designing the tour, down to every detail of production, set pieces, merch, and fashion, Morris wanted to create an environment that matched the album’s mood.

She’s playing bigger arenas than ever, too, including legendary spots like the Hollywood Bowl and Colorado’s Red Rocks. “Because we're going to be outside and it'll be dark by the time we go on stage — and will just be under the stars in all of these amazing cities — I just feel like it would be weird, especially if you've listened to Humble Quest , to go and there's a laser show happening. So that's not going to be an element of it,” she says. Instead, the sets will “amplify the music and not distract from it,” letting the songs speak for themselves. “It's going to be very twinkly and organic and nature-y,” Morris hints.

Above all, Morris notes that a concert is a full sensory immersion. “Yes, it starts with the music and ends there,” she says, “but you want to create an experience from the second they walk through the door to the second that they drive home.”

As for curating the set list? Morris says the goal is to build one “that we can all laugh and dance and cry to for two hours.” You can bet that in addition to Humble Quest and other fan favorites, she’ll definitely be playing “The Middle.”

Humble Quest

Maren Morris Humble Quest

By Will Hermes

Columbia Nashville

March 26, 2022

The Linda Ronstadt-in-Laurel Canyon vibe of Humble Quest might not be what you’d expected from Maren Morris at this point—though given her aerial-ballet career arc, it was hard to know what to expect. She broke out in 2016 with a secular gospel gem (“My Church”), landed a megahit with DJ/producer Zedd (“The Middle”), then joined the Highwomen , a supergroup tribute to, and rewrite of, 1970s outlaw country. Her latest record was made during the postpartum depression that followed the birth of her first child, a darkness compounded by the loss of her longtime creative wingman Michael Busbee to brain cancer and magnified by the pandemic. Yet the music on her third album is largely joyous and bright, both playful and profound, full of easy, comfortable pleasures that feel deeper for being hard-won.

To say Humble Quest is a re-embrace of country is misleading insofar as it suggests Morris, who can conjure a Texan Amy Winehouse, was ever a neat fit for the genre, or that she ever aspired to be. That said, the album is a near-perfect expression of country-pop post- Golden Hour , the high-water mark by Morris’ Lone Star pal Kacey Musgraves : music channeling the ’70s California rock that channeled classic country songcraft. Humble Quest may be filigreed with pedal steel, dobro, and mandolin, but it runs on guitars, synth washes, big drums, and bigger choruses. It’s all shaped with the help of Greg Kurstin, a master of pop-rock-soul triangulation who produced Morris’ hit “The Bones” along with projects by Adele , Sia , and Beck (whose Sea Change and Morning Phase might prove West Coast touchstones as significant for a new generation of country acts as the Eagles’ Greatest Hits has been for the past one).

Foundationally, this is Morris’ first LP without polymath producer Busbee—co-writer of her signatures “My Church” and “80s Mercedes”—who died of glioblastoma in 2019 at age 43. His absence, and his knack for supersizing country rock for the 21st century, shadow the album, starting with the lead track and first single “Circles Around This Town,” a triumphant autobiographical plaint about life as an aspiring Nashville songwriter. Referencing those early hits and echoing their car conceits, it focuses on the struggle to arrive: It’s got “a Montero with the AC busted,” a couple of “bad demos on a burned CD,” slammed doors, and the “couple hundred songs” she had to exorcize to land her breakthroughs, which she invokes just as the music drops out and the chorus surges. Busbee’s absence caps the album, too: The modest, aching piano ballad “What Would This World Do,” penned by Morris after his diagnosis but before his death, asks what the world would do without him. She’s living the answer daily, playing his piano in her basement.

If darkness colors the set, so does motherhood’s rapture. The day she discovered she was pregnant, Morris wrote “Hummingbird” with help from songwriting doulas the Love Junkies: Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsay, and Lori McKenna, mothers all. The acoustic waltz isn’t the best song in the A-list trio’s catalog, but it shows how Morris’ voice can alchemize a workaday lyric, with a sorghum flow rooted as deeply in R&B as the Patsy Cline countrypolitan she grew up karaoke-ing ( check her read of “All Night” by fellow Texan, Beyoncé ). Gospel and soul mannerisms are a dime a dozen among mainstream country singers, but few have Morris’ nuance and fluency; she already seems like one of the most influential stylists in modern country.

Humble Quest is abetted by Morris’ partner, singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd, who had a Hot 100 hit with last year’s “Chasing After You,” the pair’s first proper duet. Performing it adorably on the AMAs—locking eyes, getting handsy—they became country’s new first couple. Their creative bond seems strong: Besides contributing background vocals, Hurd co-wrote “Circles Around This Town” and “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” on which Morris devotedly rhymes “You like me even when I’ve been a bitch” with “You’re so good lookin’ it kinda makes me sick.” At 6’3” to her 5’1,” Hurd also seems an obvious inspiration for “Tall Guys,” a paean of punchlines by Morris, fellow Highwoman Natalie Hemby, and up-and-coming songsmith Aaron Raitiere.

The all-star co-writing roster seems key to Humble Quest ’s hybrid potency. At times, it plays like a concept record about Nashville craft as much as a straight memoir, suggesting these elements cannot be separated in Morris’ world. The lead-off chorus pivots on Morris “trying to write circles around this town,” and the album demonstrates the most recent results. As the line between country and pop gets ever blurrier, Morris’ work with writers beyond the Music Row ecosystem is the most illuminating. Kurstin, who has never before produced a country album, co-wrote four songs, among them “Detour,” a folksy tribute to folks who travel roads less traveled that also credits Australian Sarah Aarons, co-writer of “The Middle” and songs by Khalid and Halsey. Julia Michaels , another writer on “Circles Around This Town,” has shaped megahits for Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber .

Even at a concise 37 minutes, there is filler: “Good Friends” and “Nervous” don’t get past their basic thematic verities, although Morris’ delivery elevates both, the former with warmly tipsy flow, the latter with a soulful rock holler recalling Janis Joplin. Humble Quest notably sidesteps issue-conscious songs like “Dear Hate,” Morris’ poignant response to the 2017 Las Vegas country music festival mass shooting , or “Better Than We Found It” (“America, America/God save us all/From ourselves and the Hell/That we’ve built for our kids”). Her evolving relationship to public activism seems evident in the title track, a country-pop “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” that seems to interrogate her own attempts at allyship, which she aspires to make “more pro-active and less reactive,” as she recently told The New York Times . The impulse is admirable: The music world, like the wider one, needs more folks putting the money where their social media mouths are. And in the end, Humble Quest lives up to its name: 11 lithe songs about love, work, and family, some great, some good, with a coherence and clarity that make it feel matter-of-factly masterful.

GRAMMY® award-winning superstar Maren Morris is bringing her  Humble Quest  Tour to TD Pavilion at the Mann on July 14 with Brent Cobb!

Maren began writing the songs on Humble Quest in the beginning of the pandemic as a series of major life changes unfolded—new motherhood, an upended career, the death of beloved friend and collaborator Michael Busbee and more, further compounded by lockdown. She felt control over life quickly slipping until she had an epiphany—she was never in control in the first place. This inspired her to reckon with the concept of humility as she thought about how the goal of appearing humble puts artists, especially women, in a box with unrealistic demands. Humble Quest documents Maren’s journey to redefining humility on her own terms as a grounded state of understanding one’s own truth rather than the capacity to appear authentic to others.  Humble Quest  is out on March 25 via Sony Music Nashville.

Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.com , (800) 982-2787, or the Mann Box Office .   Fast lane and premier parking upgrades are available for this show.

Believe in yourself! Follow your dreams! You can be anything you want to be! Those are all beautiful sentiments, but let's face it — they can sound a bit cliche. Until, however, you talk to someone like Maren Morris. Since she released her debut album in 2016 after spending a few years as a songwriter in Nashville, Morris' star has been rising quickly — she's had a bunch of chart hits, taken home a slew of awards, including a Grammy, she's part of the country supergroup The Highwomen — but it didn't all happen overnight. Morris worked hard to get here, and her latest album and third major label release, Humble Quest , reflects on her journey, including one of her most recent endeavors: becoming a mom.

Maren Morris Names Her 'Perfect Album' as She Works with Apple Music to Choose the 100 Best of All Time (Exclusive)

M orris helped the streaming service vote on its '100 Best Albums' of all time alongside Pharrell Williams, J Balvin, Charli XCX and other musicians

  • Apple Music teamed up with artists including Maren Morris as well as music industry experts to craft its 100 Best Albums of all time list
  • The first 10 albums, including works by Robyn and Solange, were unveiled on May 13
  • In PEOPLE exclusive quotes, Morris opened up about some of her favorite albums and why full-length projects remain important

Albums are very important to Maren Morris as an art form.

The "My Church" singer-songwriter joined a team of fellow musicians including Pharrell , J Balvin, Charli XCX and more to help Apple Music vote on its 100 Best Albums of all time list.

On May 13, Apple Music unveiled the first 10 albums on the list, while Morris opened up to the streaming service about her favorite full-length bodies of work and why they're still important to release, PEOPLE can exclusively share.

According to the Grammy winner, an album marks "a temporary moment in time that is archived for the artist but eternalized for the listener."

"EPs and single-to-single releases have their purpose as a free stream of consciousness for an artist (and fans love it because they get to hear their favorite artist’s thought process), but an album is putting a period at the end of a sentence, which can be daunting but so powerful," explained Morris, 34.

Countless albums have been released into the world, but few have made an impact that stood the test of time — and Morris comes back to one in particular.

"That is so subjective," she said, "but I always go back to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill . The poetry, her blend of genres, the cultural impact it still has to this day… it’s a perfect album."

Other albums, however, have stuck a more personal chord with the "Bones" singer, such as Patty Griffin's Flaming Red .

" Flaming Red has had the most impact on me as a songwriter and producer. The crazy sonics on that album, the fact that it sounds like it could have been made this year when it’s almost 30 years old," said Morris. "And god, Patty’s words. I have the lyrics of 'Christina' on my shoulder blade. What that chorus meant to me in my teenage years it does even more so now; holding onto reality through fame."

Related: Maren Morris Says 'Hello' to 34 as She Celebrates Her Birthday and Being on the 'Other Side' of Last Year

It's impressive for an artist to make even one album that sticks with listeners long after its release, but it's rare for them to continuously release projects that connect with audiences on a deeper level.

Morris thinks two artists have mastered the art of making albums: "I’m so split between Beyoncé and Radiohead."

"Each of their albums is a cultural moment that shaped millions of people’s lives at the time of their release," she explains of the superstar acts, before zeroing in on Radiohead. "The first album I was stoned to was OK Computer , and I remember being in the passenger seat of a friend’s car as we drove over the bridge of our hometown lake, windows and sunroof down. 'Airbag' takes me right back."

"Every Beyoncé album is a thoughtful, soulful gift from her to us," adds Morris of the Destiny's Child alum. " Lemonade and Homecoming and now Cowboy Carter . I’m just honored to be a witness during her time."

Apple Music's 100 Best Albums list was voted on by a committee of experts at the streaming platform as well as artists including Morris, Pharrell, J Balvin, Charli XCX, Mark Hoppus, Honey Dijon and Nia Archives, plus various songwriters, producers and industry professionals.

"Putting this list together was a true labor of love, both in that it was incredibly difficult to do and in that we are all so passionate about it," said Apple Music's Zane Lowe in a statement.

"We were tasked with selecting the 100 best — that’s practically mission impossible," continued Lowe, 50. "But as music fans, it was also amazing to really take a minute and sit and think about the music and albums and artists that we love so much in this context. If this list sparks more debate among fans outside of Apple Music and gets people talking passionately about the music they love, then we’ve done what we set out to do."

Apple Music will unveil the full 100 Best Albums list in groups of 10 over the next 10 days. See the first 10 below.
