Kozelek's filmmaking in about the same realm as his music, maybe muted but not less pensive. An unforgettable tour on the pen and paper as well as living the world's poetry before the sunrise and sunset. In multitudes, Sun Kil Moon as an artistic entity and by proxy Kozelek himself are intriguing, endlessly curious, and self-absorbed by the way of world-weariness and plain narcissism. Looking at the man and his music is impossible outside of equity of each other because they are so syncopated. It makes it so hard to ignore the Morrissey-vibe of it all, but also hard to ignore that this man would make 'Benji' only two years later.

This basically just consists of filming Mark Kozelek as he travels round Europe playing shows. It's not a documentary really, just a tour film that happens to be two hours long, it won't interest people who aren't into Mark Kozelek but for Koz lovers and I've recently become one, it's great. Initially it seemed very boring as it just filmed Mark going to an airport, getting on the plane, travelling on the plane with shots of the view etc. But eventually combined with the near constant soundtrack of Kozelek's beautiful music it becomes a very poetic, calming yet engaging experience just like the music. The film's slow, black and white style suits his melancholic music perfectly. We don't get much…

For 19 years, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek blah blah I don't give a rats ass. Absolute bozo movie. Mark's eyesight definitely looks like the low quality YouTube version of the black and white footage but he is also the type to gloat about having masterful eyesight. He is also the type of guy to not have doorways between rooms and instead just kicks a hole in the drywall and crawls thru that. I guess you could say he is my "problematic fave" as the kids say cause I know he's a POS but his music at least used to be beautiful and he is just such a clown it's hard not to laugh at him. Nearly moved to tears…

Up here in the air I'm just mumbling at the clouds Wanting to be known While I pass the lonely hours

This was such a beautiful documentary. The aesthetics are exactly how I would imagine a Sun Kil Moon song to look like. It really captures the feeling of loneliness. In a lot of the shots, Mark looks pretty lonely, even if surrounded by people. It's nice to have this glimpse into his life and his art from this time as I don't think he did many interviews. It feels very homemade, almost like a blog, but I like that a lot because it's not striving to be more than it is, or trying to add arthouse cliches that I…

I'm logging this even though I've not watched it all yet. It's divided into 7 segments on the Youtube and I've been watching one a night in bed and the weekend's coming up and I *know* I'm not going to be reviewing anything then so let's just do it now.

Anyway it's more of a *stream of consciousness* re Mr Kozelek anyway. Just somewhere to get some thoughts out there.

So as a relatively new fan, it seems there is a divide with this guy's work. A lot of Sun Kil Moon fans don't like the extremely wordy direction taken after this film came out. But I honestly can't get enough 10-minute songs of his. When a new album sneaked…

kind of a bizarre doc. i would guess koz probably refused to do any interviews for this which is part of why it has its fly on the wall structure. good performances but i have the feeling that--like a lot of koz's projects--this would have been way better had the guy just played ball a little bit.

and listen i get mark is a bad guy i watched this before that stuff came out. relax.

I feel that I can't really review this because I skipped like 20/30/40 minutes in the middle(dont ask about it!) but yeah this can't really be called a documentary but its basically mark playing one of his songs at a bunch of different tour locations inter spliced with footage from the tour of them driving mostly but sometimes on a plane or in hotel room or hallway or sometimes just the full video of him playing the song or no video at all and also sometimes he can't do basic tasks like get hot water from a machine or open a door and he also laughs for like 2 minutes straight about his friend knocking on the door while he…

Mark Kozelek: On Tour: A Documentary – The Soundtrack

mark kozelek on tour

It was July 2006. I was camped out underneath a tree on the grounds of Ottawa City Hall taking in a Sunday line-up at a side-stage of Bluesfest – an annual two-week concert festival that has, on occasion, put other festivals in other cities to shame with its roster of riches – on a hot, humid, sunny day without water. I had my best friend, Wes, beside me. We were taking in a mid-afternoon set by moody sadcore icon Mark Kozelek. Wes was pointing out to me that a few of the songs being played solo by Kozelek and a trusty acoustic guitar were taken from the last Red House Painters album, Old Ramon . However, I was much more of a novice when it came to the artist’s material. This was my first time experiencing anything by Kozelek in a protracted manner, though I know I’d heard of him before on the radio: CBC Radio Ottawa made his AC/DC covers album, What’s Next to the Moon , one of their Best Albums of the year when it came out in 2001. Still, I was enrapt and I was enjoying myself, even though I was parched.

However, clearly, Kozelek seemed to have a demeanor on stage that suggested he would have been somewhere else. This was more or less confirmed when, during a break between songs, he took a look at the crowd and said something like “There sure are a lot of white people out there.” I didn’t think much about the comment at the time, it sailed over my head probably due to the lack of hydration. However, a few days later at work as a ministerial correspondence writer in the federal government I ran into a colleague who had been at the same show, and he brought up the comment, likening it to being racist. I’m pretty sure that colleague didn’t go on to become a Kozelek fan, as I did, but that’s a telling point: at least at Bluesfest 2006, Kozelek alienated at least one person in his core audience with a comment that really, in retrospect, didn’t seem to have much of a point other than to suggest he was having less than a stellar time. Or wasn’t playing to what he felt was his intended audience.

Well, the latest album from Kozelek, a sort of live album meets compilation album called On Tour: A Documentary – A Soundtrack , is a two disc set that doesn’t serve much of a point, either. For one, a clutch of these songs are actually studio versions of material already found on 2010’s Sun Kil Moon album Admiral Fell Promises . I don’t know about you, but if I wanted to hear songs from that record, I’d go to my CD collection shelf and pull that disc down from it. Secondly, this is the soundtrack to a film that was released in 2011, so this album comes a little more than a year late. Thirdly, even much of the live material that graces this collection of 33 songs, clocking in at more than two hours in length, has been released before. I turn to my fellow reviewer at Pitchfork , Stephen M. Deusner, who seems to be more of a Kozelek completist than I am, who notes that “everything here – save a few noodly sketches like ‘Seville Piece’ and ‘Backstage Unitarian Piece’ – has been available in some form or another before now. That includes the four bonus tracks and even ‘Koko’, a typically atmospheric instrumental by Caldo Verde signees Desertshore.”

So, knowing that, you may ask yourself: Why? Why is there the need for this soundtrack? If you’re a Kozelek obsessive, you’ll have the vast majority of this material, aside from the interstitial bits (and do you really need to shell out your hard earned cash to simply hear Kozelek fooling around with his nylon stringed acoustic guitar?). And for the beginner to Kozelek’s signature sound? I would gently grab you by the shoulders, spin you around and send you off in the direction of Kozelek’s high water mark in the form of 2003’s Sun Kil Moon album, Ghosts of the Great Highway . I really don’t get the purpose or the intended audience for On Tour: A Documentary – The Soundtrack , particularly when it boasts not one, but two versions of “Ålesund”, for instance. Maybe casual listeners might be enthralled, but how many of those are there out there? I took a peak at Amazon.com on Dec. 8, 2012, when I sat down to write this review, and this set was ranked No. 152,530 in the Music section. Clearly, this collection is of interest only to the long tail. And, one more thing, while I’m on a bit of roll, if you come to this album (or albums) looking for Kozelek to interact with his audience or say something controversial, he doesn’t. All you’ll hear is a muttered “thank you” at the end of the occasional song, and that’s it.

To be charitable, though, there is some use for this album. If you simply want two hours plus of just Kozelek and his acoustic guitar, save for the odd performance where he’s joined by an extra finger picker, this might be your bag. If there’s one thing I can say about this album: playing this in your home (or apartment, in my case) is a transformative experience of sorts. You’ll feel as though you’re in a cathedral instead of your humble abode. Kozelek’s playing is bright and expansive, and his laconic mumble-yet-croon of a voice is a true treasure. There are segments where you’ll be enrapt – my favourite here is a stripped down version of “Carry Me Ohio” – and even if Kozelek is a bit of soft shoe Neil Young knock off, it’s easy to be carried away by his intense and downbeat vision. However, being held in Kozelek’s sway will come with a bit of an expense.

By the end of listening to this very long album, you may find yourself in a melancholy mood. I made the mistake of playing these discs on the afternoon after I’d finished up one contract at my workplace (I’m currently looking to be hired back, but that’ll require a few weeks of downtime and paperwork), and, alone for the first time in ages in my apartment on a “day off”, I felt as listless and lonely as many of these songs are. By the time I’d gotten around to hearing this album for a second time, I felt I could have used a good stiff drink. Which is to say that, if the artist in Kozelek felt there was a need for this soundtrack, he might have been better served paring it down to a much more manageable single disc. (Certainly, he could have removed the studio versions of songs from Admiral Fell Promises for one.)

All in all, On Tour: A Documentary – The Soundtrack is simply too much of what’s already a crowded slate for Kozelek – another live album and a covers album are expected to drop on the same day in February 2013 – and suggests that it is solely the product of a man’s ego spinning out of control, with a necessity to repackage material that is already out there in the marketplace. If one can say anything about this soundtrack, it is the sage advice that perhaps Kozelek himself might have taken on that summery day in 2006 in Ottawa: sometime saying less, or saying nothing at all, is worth a lot more. On Tour: A Documentary – The Soundtrack is an overabundance of a good thing, particularly with other Kozelek material coming down the pipe. Save your money for those goodies instead.

mark kozelek on tour

Mark Kozelek is the immensely talented lead singer and writer for Sun Kil Moon, and before that, the Red House Painters, one of the leading bands of the sadcore movement in the 90s. When Kozelek tours, he tours alone, just his nylon string guitar and mournful, weary voice. His large fan base in Europe often leaves Kozelek on the road for many months. Mark Kozelek: On Tour is an attempt to showcase these tours, and to capture how this bare music arrangement has become the focus of Sun Kil Moon’s newest album Admiral Fell Promises .

Unfortunately the film, despite a promising teaser , is a meandering hodgepodge of a film, better as background than main viewing. The beginning ten minutes play out like a poignant music video, the kind that I’d always wished the Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon had been able to make. The album tracks “Ålesund” and “Half Moon Bay” play under somber footage of Mark Kozelek leaving his home of San Francisco in what seems like the dead early morning, taking off on a plane, and journeying into the clouds. The emotion the imagery and music elicits here is magnificently powerful. Is this what I picture when I hear a Mark Kozelek song? It is. The empty landscape on the way to the airport, the blistering lights from the wings of the airplane, the darkened clouds sitting under the black sky, all more powerful than I could’ve imagined. Alas, the beginning ten minutes are the strongest.

After that, the film splits apart: part concert film and part minimalist tour diary of Kozelek’s European and American tours in 2010 and 2011. Unfortunately, the editing and camerawork in both the concerts and travel footage is lacking, leaving all but the music to be desired. The transition between the album tracks and the concert footage is almost jarring. The first live track in Sweden begins with some uninspiring dialog between Kozelek and the sound engineers during the sound check. The badly lit one-camera shoot is supported by shots of the crowd timelapsing into their seats, Kozelek sitting in his dressing room, and unrelated shots of traveling the freeway. After the song ends, a sudden slideshow of travel photos pops up, changing without fail on every guitar strum. Kozelek then talks a little while in his hotel room about touring with the Red House Painters and his childhood. This lack of focus continues on.

With a more skillful editor, the various content could work together to tell a story. Unfortunately, the editing is where Joshua Stoddard seems to display his amateur filmmaking credentials. Instead of keeping on Kozelek preparing and leaving his dressing room during live track “Void,” Stoddard cuts back and forth with stock Final Cut Pro dissolves every thirty seconds. What’s worse is that it took me a few viewings to understand the dressing room footage has anything to do with the concert. There’s no establishing shot or narrative. The shots seem random and disembodied. Most of the footage, while beautiful in the case of the landscapes, is clearly used to take up space while Kozelek sings. The dissolves between every shot especially become aggravating.

Editing aside, there is some lovely footage here. Stoddard makes the excellent choice to keep all footage crushingly monochromatic. As Kozelek exits his start hotel room, his black silhouette and guitar case reminds us of that other legendary music figure. Driving in the rain looks especially dramatic.

We also get to peer into Kozelek’s mind through little vignettes and interview snippets. There are some moments where he seems deliriously tired, cackling and wheezing hysterically as he struggles to get through a story about being bugged by his manager. Kozelek has been criticized in the past for what Tiny Mix Tapes has called his “good-natured(?) ribbing” of the audience, a characterization I found endlessly amusing. His on-stage manner seems to vary from bitterly amused to cagily hostile. A couple proposed at a concert I went to in London. Kozelek’s setup for the proposal was something like, “I’m not really good at this, so… I think, I think someone wants to do something. Is there someone…? Is there someone in the audience that…?” Hey, at least he was honest.

One of the best things about the film is that it answers the question of why he seems so out of it at his concerts, and why a line in the song “Tonight in Bilbao” reads “Walked in a room, soaked up its fumes / Surveyed the faces I am lying to.” There is a telling scene where Kozelek stands in front of a coffee machine trying to get hot water from it. After a full minute, he flags down a clerk, and they tell him, “No water.” He tosses his cup into the trash and presses on, bags under his eyes.

The filmmaking leaves much to be desired. The endless shots of timelapsed freeway travel smack of amateurism — why not just choose the best moments instead of speeding through all of it? However, Mark Kozelek: On Tour is a wonderful showcase of Kozelek’s talent and a rare glimpse into his lonely-seeming tour life. With more recent Sun Kil Moon songs dealing heavily with the themes of European and American travel, seeing this film will be essential to Kozelek fans. For the rest, you could watch the film too, but I would suggest keeping your eyes only half open.

Many lessons were learned last time Mark Kozelek came to Denver to perform at the Soiled Dove Underground. Koz doesn’t get laid in Denver. He doesn’t drink or smoke pot. He doesn’t like the outdoors and has nothing in common with the “sporty” couples of Colorado. But the most important lesson was to refrain from eating Buffalo wings while the man is performing. Having learned our lesson, we were spared that particular rant on Thursday night. Instead, the 48 year old singer-songwriter took the stage with stories about Anton LaVey, Steve McQueen and dreams of moving to the West Coast, all while beating a drum with a single stick. Then he told a couple little girls in the audience that their dog was going to die…just like his girlfriend’s dog, his grandmother and his friend Brett.

Things didn’t exactly lighten up when he sat down with his guitar to perform his latest single, “The Possum”. Admitting the single wasn’t much of a success because people didn’t understand it, he proceeded anyway. The nine minute track uses a dying possum and a Godflesh concert at the DNA Lounge as inspiration to live every day to its fullest. Half the track is sung like Justin Broadrick, while other parts are spoken word. I’m not sure Koz realizes that his fanbase overlaps with The War on Drugs more than it does with Godflesh, which might explain the lukewarm response to the single, but it probably wouldn’t matter if he did. Mark Kozelek doesn’t really give a shit what people think. He never has. His attitude is not something new. “It’s not something that started in September.” That being said, following the single with “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes” was a great move. With everyone on common ground again, we were prepared for the first disaster of the evening.

When his tuner went out, the lighting guy became the target of Koz’s frustration. Was the tuner cursed because it was purchased in Newtown, Connecticut? Could the lighting guy go get him a 9-volt battery? Could the audience stop laughing? Was it his guitar? “This is not funny!” Luckily the situation was remedied in short time and within minutes Koz was further down the road of “making friends” with lighthearted misogyny (if there is such a thing) and Denver bashing. One of the funniest exchanges came at this point in the show. When Koz claimed that he had never once signed a piece of vinyl for a girl in his entire career, a female audience member walked up to the stage with a copy of Benji and asked him to sign it. He accused her of asking for her boyfriend or uncle, told her there was nothing on the album she could relate to, took the album from her, threw the album on the ground behind him, and then offered her $500 cash to name five tracks on the album. She said “330 Area Code” and “My Dead Cousin”, to which he replied “no, those are not names of songs on that album”. She was more successful at naming songs from his older albums, to which he claimed to be aroused. He told her she was cute, gave her the album back and said he would sign it after the show. Then he performed “Dogs”, a song that documents his first sexual encounter and the many uncomfortable and awkward sexual encounters that followed.

I’m a Sun Kil Moon fan, and when I found out that Mark Kozelek was the master behind their compositions. I took it upon myself to listen to more of his music away from the band, such as his solo work. As he’s a competent guitarist, he created incredible indie singer songwriter work on his own without the need of a huge band, in contrast to his Sun Kil Moon, and Red House Painters work.

He opened the show with Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer, from his debut EP, and as his distinctive baritone voice washed out across the auditorium, and everyone was cheering right away. He was great at interacting with the audience, and kept shouting out for everyone to sing along with him, which was awesome and super exciting. When he played Bedtime Lullaby, he taught everyone a section of the chorus, and got us all singing together, whilst he sang a different harmony over the top. At the end of the show, he was chatting to us in the crowd, and said that he was writing some new music, and he sang us a new song form one of the tracks, which was awesome to hear live before it was even released!
