Life ‘Threw’ Mavi Around, His New Album Shows What He’s Learned

By Andre Gee

Mavi was in need of a balm in the time leading up to the album. He was grieving the loss of his uncle, as well as other family members who’d recently passed. His promising rap career was at a lull after Shango, his would-be sophomore album, got bogged down in red tape never to see the light of day. And he’s spent much of the time settling into an apartment in D.C. with his girlfriend as the couple grapples with the decision to terminate a pregnancy. “I don’t think neither one of us really wanted to do it, but we just kind of assumed we had to do it and we couldn’t tell nobody that’s what we was doing.” He says they still haven’t told their families about it. “I’m ashamed still. It’s not something I would ever see my father doing. My parents had me when they were pretty young.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Born Omavi Minder, Mavi started rapping at age 14 during his freshman year of high school in North Charlotte, honing his craft as a member of the local rap collective Killswitch. He dropped his Beacon and No Roses mixtapes in 2016 and 2017 respectively, a time period where he said “I kept making progress [as a rapper] until the question came up that was like ‘does it make sense to continue doing anything else?’”

He carries those gifts over to Laughing so Hard, it Hurts , with a tighter focus on diaristic writing while eschewing double meaning for bare honesty. “One of the things I added to my game for this album in specific was the power of simplification and brevity and straightforwardness,” he says. “I lost some fear along the way of what it would mean for me to say truly how I feel straightforward, unequivocally.”

The Results Are In: Kendrick Lamar Won the Great Rap War

Everything that's happened in the drake-kendrick beef, elgrandetoto's dreams are too big to be contained.

“He was training me up for real,” Mavi recalls of his time with the legendary producer. “And one night I just turned to that nigga, I was like, ‘Bro, I love to rap.’ And then I had got sleepy and I fell asleep in the chair,” he recalls. Two days later, Alchemist confided that Mavi’s unprovoked affirmation let him know that he would be “the one.” In October of last year, the two dropped “Miracle Baby,” a track from Alchemist’s This Thing Of Ours EP compilation series.

Along with grieving his loss, he began to feel the weight of expectations for his sophomore album. “That shit makes you feel really small because the whole point of the tour is for your music and everybody’s like, ‘you can’t get another tour if you don’t have an album,’” he says. ”That’s what everybody was telling me, so I felt a lot of external pressure to make an album.” In 2020, he announced that Shango would be his next album, which he had crafted during the height of the post-George Floyd and Breonna Taylor uprisings. “I wrote it in the midst of a state of unrest and instability. And I was coming into my 21st year at the same time. So it was a very angry, aggressive, volatile, and masculine album.”

Shango was in the final stages of production with a cover, a track list, and merch already complete, but then Mavi ran into a series of snags, including sample clearance issues that ultimately kept the album from being released. During our conversation, he gestures to a pile of black Shango sweatshirts sitting in a box in his studio. Shirts that could have been shipped all over the world are instead a mountainous reminder of what could have been. “One day people will hear [ Shango ],” he resolves. “Whatever way I can get it for people to hear it, they’ll hear it. It’s really good music.”

Tommy Lee Wins Round in Helicopter Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Tom brady briefly forgets what a roast is after jeff ross' robert kraft massage joke.

Mavi shows that even if we can’t make sense of the world, we can make sense of how we reconcile with it. “I’ll try as little as possible to sell the myth of my own exceptionalism because selling the myth of your own exceptionalism is low-key like an ego defense,” he says. “It prevents anybody from trying to be you. I want everybody to try to be me. I want everybody to try to follow their dreams like how I follow my dreams without hurting nobody, without taking from nobody, without harming nobody.”

Rapper Mavi on his new album "Laughing So Hard It Hurts"

mavi rapper tour

Laughing So Hard It Hurts Artist hide caption

Hailing from Charlotte, NC, young rapper Mavi is one to watch. He created his first album, Let the Sun Talk, during his freshman year at Howard University. The project was met with praise, and so at the beginning of the pandemic, the neuroscience major decided to go home to his beloved city of Charlotte to work on his next record, the sophomore effort End of the Earth . With those two critically-praised independent records under his belt, word began to spread. He got invitations to collaborate with artists like The Alchemist and Earl Sweatshirt on tracks. He opened for Jake Harlow on his most recent tour. And last year, he recorded a stirring third album, Laughing So Hard It Hurts .

Laughing So Hard It Hurts is an album about pain. The pain of losing friends and loved ones, the pain of generational trauma, and of relationships ending. Though none of this is considered new territory in hip-hop, it's what makes Mavi's latest record so special - its vulnerability. You can hear the loneliness in the songs. Through his rhymes and the beautiful, almost subdued, production, he doesn't just tell you about pain; you're feeling it with him. Mavi crams 16 songs into 32 minutes on Laughing So Hard It Hurts . It's a dense and intimate record, even a little lonely-sounding at times. We talked with Mavi about why he made that choice.

MAVI shares new song “Mama Say”

The north carolina rapper will head out on tour next month with jack harlow..

mavi rapper tour

North Carolina rapper MAVI is the kind of artist that labors over the content and delivery of his music more than most. Back in 2019, he told The FADER about how Toni Morrison's work influenced his own. "She's willing to go really far to pull you close for a message. That's something I wanna do with my writing as much as I can."

His new song "Mama Say" follows those tenets. "My mama say I got death on me," he raps in the beginning, "Probably the reason why I haven't been the best homie." This kind of vulnerability — dense, tender, and reflective — is spread throughout the song, and makes you want to reach into it as much as it feels like MAVI is reaching out. Check out a Spotify stream of the song below, followed by MAVI's upcoming tour dates with Jack Harlow and Babyface Ray.

Mavi Laughing So Hard It Hurts

Best New Music

By Paul A. Thompson

Mavi 4 Mayor

October 21, 2022

Mavi was expecting to follow his acclaimed 2019 debut, Let the Sun Talk , with a record called Shango , which the 23-year-old rapper has taken to calling “a very manly, muscular album” and which was eventually shelved. In its place came first the slightly tortured EP End of the Earth , released early last year, and now the gently probing Laughing so Hard, it Hurts , a record whose raw nerve endings sizzle and pop to make even its weariest verses seem animated by a desire for contentment, for harmony. It’s intimate by design, with Mavi’s frequently muted voice drawing the listener’s ear close to the speaker, but expansive in scope: Its opening song is named for a folk hero from American slavery, and its closing one traces the running routes through his native Charlotte, North Carolina that are “carved into the small of [his] back.” Languid in spots, but never for too long—its 16 songs last just over 38 minutes— Laughing so Hard suggests a zen state that is being punctured then resealed in endless loop.

It would be tempting to collapse Mavi’s style into the Earl Sweatshirt / MIKE scene that has been so popular and so prolific over the last five years. And while he shares plenty of qualities with those rappers—he has in the past affected voices similar to both pre- and post- Some Rap Songs Earl, and his taste in production skews toward the jagged and seemingly unfinished— Laughing so Hard features a staggering number of vocal styles and melodic ideas. That aforementioned hush, heard especially on songs like “Doves,” invites tantalizingly ambiguous readings, sounding at times like a seduction and at others like an embarrassed confession. He’s desperate on the tender “My Good Ghosts” and guarded despite the exuberant beat on “Opportunity Kids”; elsewhere, on “Spoiled Brat,” the way Mavi allows the last line of each phrase to unspool into song turns simple detail (“I’m glad I washed my hands”) into maxim.

Dylvinci and Wulf Morpheus combine to furnish roughly half the album’s beats, with contributions from monte booker, Jacob Rochester, and longtime collaborator ovrkast, among others. As with Mavi’s voice, the music is thick with invention. Let the Sun Talk was originally uploaded to SoundCloud as a single, 32-minute track; while the palette here is brighter and slightly more polished, Laughing so Hard retains the feel of different musical directions overlapping and enjambing. This is not precisely the muddy, self-consciously lo-fi production spilling out of New York’s underground, nor the ostentatiously technical post-post-post- Dilla chops that dominate other corners, but a welcome hybrid of the two where lushness and brittleness converge in beats, like Rochester’s “The Inconvenient Truth,” that are at once rugged and delicate. Mavi, who wrote the majority of the album to melodic demos without any drums programmed over them, navigates those rhythms with a dexterity that is never foregrounded, but stunning on inspection.

Like the rappers to whom he’s most most frequently compared, Mavi’s writing is often characterized as cryptic or enigmatic. And while his verses do include some little parabolic bursts, he is most effective when he’s being direct, as on the harrowing “Chinese Finger Trap,” when he says he’s “finally sober—and it’s just another layer of lonely,” or when he laments, on “Hemlock,” “I see when niggas get famous, the revolution in them die.” The latter line gives way to one of Mavi’s best modes, a rigorously economical tangle with spiritual struggle:

They gnaw my flesh Mispronounce my name Deny my breath Snap my bones in two Memorize my screams Then memorize they steps

There are more lighthearted applications of his straightforward approach, like when he quips that money is getting “mildewy, like white people dreads,” or when he raps that a girlfriend “know she can get a Chanel whenever my streaming hit.” Twenty years ago, that line appearing on a nominally underground rap record would have seemed like a radical blurring of hip-hop’s different spheres—it’s essentially the core conflict of The College Dropout . When Mavi says it today, it’s instead unnerving for the way it literalizes the more symbolic parts of his music, the gnawing at his flesh monetized and tracked down to the thousandth of a cent. But Laughing so Hard does not take a defeated or cynical view of that economic exchange. It sees that slow accrual as one more line on a ledger of incremental progress toward a world that is slightly more forgiving.
