* These perks are only available to qualifying members . A qualifying member is one who earns the minimum number of tier credits required for each level. If you earn status through a third party or status match, you are not eligible for these bonuses.

Bottom Line: Your MGM Rewards elite level is determined by the number of tier credits you earn over 1 calendar year from January 1 to December 31. As soon as you reach the required number of points for the next tier level, your status will be advanced and you’ll maintain that status for the rest of that year, the following calendar year, through January of the third calendar year. For example, if you earn Gold status in August 2023, your status would be valid through January 31, 2025.

Tier Status Match

MGM will match tiers from other casino loyalty programs.

Here’s a look at the status match opportunities for other Nevada casino loyalty programs. To see options for other states, check out the full list of casino loyalty program tier matches .

Southwest Airlines

M life Rewards members who are also Southwest Rapid Rewards members can earn 600 Rapid Rewards points for each qualifying stay at all Las Vegas MGM Rewards destinations.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Line

MGM Rewards members receive special benefits and perks when cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity . Benefits vary based on your MGM Rewards status. If you’re a member of both MGM Rewards and Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society, you’ll need to choose which benefits you want to receive at the time of booking as they can’t be combined.

Royal Caribbean Crown and Anchor Society Members and Celebrity Captain’s Club members can status match to MGM Rewards tier levels by visiting an MGM Rewards desk. Status matches can’t be done online or over the phone.

Hot Tip: The onboard MGM Rewards benefits on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruises are not available to those who got MGM Rewards status through the tier match program.

MGM Rewards members can save up to 30% on their next car rental from Avis.

Cirque du Soleil

MGM Rewards members can save up to 25% off ticket prices and have access to preferred seating for select Cirque du Soleil performances.

Thunder Valley Casino Resort

MGM Rewards members can receive benefits and offers through Thunder Valley Casino Resort, located in Northern California.

Cashman Photo

  • 3 points and 3 tier credits per $1 spent at MGM Resorts properties
  • 2 points and 2 tier credits per $1 spent at supermarkets and gas stations
  • 1 point and 1 tier credit per $1 spent everywhere else

Plus, as a cardmember, you’ll automatically receive an upgrade to Pearl status and priority check-in at MGM Resorts.

So, is this card worth getting? Probably not. Even for high rollers who spend a lot at MGM properties, there are other credit cards out there that will offer even more benefits.

Alternative Credit Card Options to the MGM Rewards Card

You can earn 3x points on all travel (including MGM Resorts) by using the  Chase Sapphire Reserve ® ,  Citi Premier ® Card , or the Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card .

If you’re interested in earning points at U.S. supermarkets , check out the American Express ® Gold Card that earns 4x (up to $25,000 per calendar year; 1x thereafter).

If you’d like a card that earns bonus points at gas stations , consider the Marriott Bonvoy Business ® American Express ® Card also earns 4x points at U.S. gas stations.

Bottom Line: For most people, the MGM Rewards card isn’t worth it. There are so many other entertainment and travel rewards credit cards out there that offer more benefits and higher-earning capabilities than this card.

If you’re a regular on the Las Vegas Strip, you might be familiar with MGM Rewards. As a member, you’ll earn points that can be applied to your hotel, dining, and entertainment bills. You’ll also earn tier credits toward elite status.

If you rarely travel to Vegas, don’t worry — MGM Rewards is valid at MGM properties across the U.S. as well as those in China and Japan.

Even if you aren’t a big gambler, you can sign up for MGM Rewards for free to earn perks anytime you try your hand at Lady Luck!

MGM Resorts Adds Suite Upgrades, Airfare Credit And Celebration Dinners As Elite Benefits

by Gary Leff on January 7, 2022

They’re introducing confirmed suite upgrades for top tier elites, formalizing early check-in and late check-out, and offering airfare credits and celebration meals upon earning elite tiers. These new benefits will be competitive, but there are going to be fewer elites – especially fewer elites among families and non-gambling leisure guests.

Nonetheless the program remains very interesting because of their partnership with Hyatt, where mid-tier and top-tier Hyatt members receive MGM’s Gold status and that waives resort fees and complimentary valet parking.

Earning Elite Status

There are many readers with Hyatt status, of course, and the easiest path to status remains a status match including via Hyatt’s MGM partnership but for those earning it organically,

It’s become a lot harder to earn status with spending other than from gambling (just 4 tier points per dollar, down from 25, an 84% reduction).

Stays at Hyatt now force a choice between earning Hyatt points or MGM tier credit, no more double dipping.

David Tsai, MGM’s President for Midwest Properties, explained to me,

We realized we had made it too easy to become premium tier in the program, and that didn’t allow us to offer meaningful benefits that some other [loyalty programs could].

A member only had to spend $1000 for Pearl status or $3000 for Gold status, they could load up charging friends and family spend, and it was easy to reach that. It was harder to achieve similar tiers in other programs

He further offered that there are tier credit earning changes on the gambling side too, and they haven’t figured out how to talk about those yet. In general non-Vegas properties should earn more, Vegas may earn less but it will depend on the game. They’ll be offering “consistent earn across the whole company” “Every slot machine is different, every table game different, .. A slot that holds less earns less.” This should basically approximate earning tier credits based on theoretical loss from a game and spend, rather than just tracking “coin-in” like Caesars. They don’t have an answer on the extent to which they’ll become more transparent on this.

These changes tilt the program much more heavily towards gamblers. Elite gamblers don’t have much non-gambling spend, since that gets comped anyway. Frequent flyers who don’t gamble, and don’t get their status via match, will find the program’s tiers less achievable. In fact the program intends to have fewer elites , based on a conversation I had with David Tsai. And, he says, this will allow them to deliver more benefits more consistently.

Revamped Elite Benefits

While status will be much harder to earn without significant gambling spend – it will take $5000 on property just to earn the first level of status which nets free self-parking – those who achieve or match to status will see better benefits.

Here are some key benefits at each level: Pearl: (20,000 tier credits) Complimentary self-parking; $10 free birthday bet

Gold: (75,000 tier credits) Resort fee waived for up two rooms when booking direct; $100 tier achievement celebration dinner; upgrade at check-in if available (view, high floor); dedicated line at restaurants; complimentary valet parking; $25 free birthday bet

Platinum: (200,000 tier credits) $600 air travel credit to Las Vegas once per tier; $200 tier achievement celebration dining experience; annual complimentary cruise on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity (ocean view room, up to 5 nights); 4pm late checkout if available; 1pm late checkin if available and requested 24 hours in advance, one advance suite upgrade per year up to 3 nights; expedited valet and taxi service; $100 free birthday bet

These benefits are additive, so Golds get Pearl benefits and Platinums receive Gold benefits etc.

The confirmed suite upgrade benefit for Platinums and Noirs can requested (immediately) after booking. In general if a standard suite is available it can be confirmed. They’re still working through some details on how the upgrade will work but David Tsai tells me they don’t plan to be restrictive on inventory. They started with once a year to make sure they could deliver it.

Late checkout is based on availability, but Tsai says “If we have availability, we’ll honor it.” And he notes that includes on sell-out nights. In the past “it wasn’t an explicit benefit [so] we didn’t have a way to prioritize best members.” he says that the general idea is to honor it as long as the hotel has enough people arriving later in the day so that they can turn the room. They’ll “honor it in the majority of cases” but “it is at hotel front desk discretion.”

The free cruise, celebration meal, and airfare credit are offered upon earning the relevant tier . Status matches or other comp status aren’t supposed to receive these (I’ve heard of matched status receiving the cruise successfully in the past). And current elites will not receive dining and airfare until they qualify in 2022 for 2023. That’s less generous than Caesars which has given $100 celebration dinners to those on the Wyndham – Caesars Diamond status match merry go round.

The elimination of resort fees for mid-tier elites is similarly welcome. In the case of a celebration dinner and resort fee waiver, they’re largely copying Caesars, but with their portfolio of nicer properties I prefer to stay at. Hyatt Discoverists get Pearl and Explorists and Globalists get Gold so mid-tier Hyatt status waiving resort fees is nice.

Noir is the invitation-only level and without a published earning criteria, though reportedly in the past it’s taken a six figure (e.g. $250,000) ‘theoretical loss’ to be invited, which is to say you gamble enough that on average you’d lose that much – your actual gambling performance (win or lose) isn’t a factor.

Noirs used to get guaranteed best available table at restaurants without advance notice, I imagine those that really do gamble enough can still get that but it’s no longer a published benefit and hasn’t been in recent times.

I’ve archived MGM’s new tier status brochure and benefits matrix on the site.

Ultimately this is an interesting strategic pivot, offering stronger benefits but focusing giving out those benefits to gamblers. In recent years they’ve focused on families and other leisure travelers, but this is a clear switch back to focus on gamblers because of the reduced ability to earn status for non-gambling spend. However David Tsai offered that he’s “hoping that customers view this as a positive, because it allows [our] most loyalty customers to be rewarded.”

I’m seeing Excalibur nights for as low as $18/night. This is a huge opportunity for Hyatt mattress runs if the resort fees are waived.

I think it’s all a real positive for a program that previously sucked (MLife ) My only complaint as a Gold is lack of a confirmed late check out Platinum will be 4 PM Gold should be 2 or 3 PM If they fixed that I would likely give them all my business

Sounds suspiciously like a copy of Caesars Rewards. Even the airfare credits match Diamond Elite and Seven Stars. They clearly looked around and realized Caesars was doing it better. As for now, I’m staying with CR because they still have the best earning potential among all of the casino loyalty programs but I will keep an open mind and see what the earning rate is on gambling with MGM to see if it’s worthwhile

And, don’t forget, one can earn MGM Platinum by spending $200k on the M Life credit card without any stays, dining, or gambling. Why does this sound familiar? To stay competitive with Caesars, MGM will need a shopping portal that earns points. Does this make me evil?

How very disappointing that MLife has choose this avenue to take after years of loyalty from their customers! Many people can not go enough during the year to achieve high status! Such a shame but the strip is big and has a lot of gambling options that will give benefits!

Eldorado has made such a mess with CET Rewards, MGM realizes that they have a real chance, to poach a lot of Eldorado’s gamblers. Notice, they have decided NOT to go after the non-gambling spenders. They are leaving these for CET, even encouraging their own to leave. MGM did this in the 90’s too, when they de-themed their resorts and closed their amusement park; building The mansion in its place.

Hope fully in time this will prove to be great

If your gold status will you stay gold or do you have restart at the bottom tier?

After coming to Vegas for 30+ years I can now see why MGM- M life , M-rewards has lost its luster. Most recent visit this past Jan. was only that my wife needed to go to the FURNITURE MARKET to see a couple of vendors. We stayed at the ARIA only because they had a shuttle bus to the market. Before our trip i had been receiving promotions from ALL M-REWARDS HOTELS due to my past gambling. 4 comp nights, free resort fees, $150 free play. Everything was fine until i had to change 1 night. The rudest people i have ever dealt with. The PROMOTION has EXPIRED ( ?? good until Dec) so we ended up paying for the 3 nights there. That was OK with me because then i wasn’t obligated to spend a penny on gambling. I went to other venues to spend my money (or give it away) In the past when i was given COMP rooms i usually on gabled at that hotel.

Details of new MGM Rewards Benefits

I cover a lot of info about M life, which is now known as MGM Rewards as of February 1, 2022.  To read more about MGM Rewards, visit this page .

Additional information about the change from M life to MGM Rewards has been released  today (January 6, 2022).  The major benefit changes are as follows:

MGM Rewards offers members new and exclusive marquee benefits, including waived resort fees (Gold+), Tier Achievement Travel Credit to Las Vegas (Platinum+), complimentary tickets to MGM Rewards concerts (Pearl+), advanced suite upgrades for up to three nights (Platinum+), access to exclusive tier appreciation events and experiences (Gold+) and 4 p.m. late check-out (based on availability; Platinum+). As an added benefit, MGM Rewards Points and Slot Dollars will not expire for Pearl+ members due to account inactivity.

Below I will break down the most important of these changes.

Tier Credits

One thing to note is that Tier Credits are getting MUCH more difficult to earn starting in February 2022.  Under M life, 25 Tier Credits were earned for each $1 spend.  This is being drastically reduced to 4 Tier Credit per $1 spend.

mgm $600 air travel credit

Resort Fees

MGM Rewards members with Gold status or above will no longer pay resort fees at MGM Resorts properties.  This is a very nice change as resort fees often can be the bulk of the cost of a hotel room (or on free nights, the entirety of the cost).  It will be interesting to see if the cost per nights goes up to make up for this, but my guess is that in order to stay competitive on booking websites, they won’t raise the price much.

The fine print is as follows: Applicable daily resort fees will be waived on up to two room reservations per trip when an eligible member books direct , under their name, with MGM Resorts International and his/her eligible MGM Rewards account  number is attached to such reservations. To redeem, the eligible member may be required to visit the Front Desk  during their stay to confirm eligibility and request waiver of the daily resort fee (e.g., if member advances to  eligible Tier level during stay). Not applicable to reservations associated with convention, trade show and/or group  sales unless billed to the qualifying member.

It is easy to get Gold status through status match with Hyatt  (or during certain times Caesars Rewards).

mgm $600 air travel credit

Complimentary Tickets to MGM Rewards Concerts

It isn’t clear exactly what this will be, but I am guessing it is to line up more with a Caesars Rewards free ticket benefit .  Don’t expect to get a free ticket to Lady Gaga unless you are at Noir level.  These are probably going to be for less popular concerts; though it would be great if some of the Cirque shows are included — don’t hold your breath.

The fine print is as follows: Offers will vary in terms of frequency, ticket types, number of tickets, location, dates, etc. based on member’s  Tier status and spend/gaming activity. Availability of tickets may be limited by capacity or otherwise and are  subject to availability. Redemption instructions will be included in offer communication.

Celebration Dinner

Another big change is the addition of a celebration dinner when a member reaches the next tier, starting with Gold (similar to what Caesars Rewards offers ).  $100 credit when you reach Gold.  $200 at Platinum.  And $500 at Noir.  Note that those that receive their status through a status match will NOT earn the annual dinner.

One (1) Tier Achievement Celebration Dining Experience benefit valid for qualifying member is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying Gold, qualifying Platinum or qualifying NOIR member who has earned the minimum Tier Credits associated with reaching the applicable Tier Level (and, for NOIR Tier Level, invited to such level during such Tier Status Earning Period) based on spend during such period. Members who receive their Tier Level status through a third-party or other partnership tier match program are not eligible for the  benefit . Dining Experience benefit is not awarded based on a member’s Tier Level status as of the beginning of the Tier Status Earning Year. A qualifying member who reaches multiple eligible Tier Levels during a Tier Status Earning Year as described above will receive one such benefit (awarded as a dining credit) for each such level reached. Amount of dining credit for reaching specific Tier Levels is as follows: up to $100 dining credit for reaching Gold, up to $200 dining credit for reaching Platinum, and up to $500 for reaching (and invited to)  NOIR. Dining experience must be booked by qualifying member through designated MGM staff (who will apply applicable dining credit to member’s MGM Rewards account). Dining experience must be completed within twelve (12) months after qualifying for the benefit. Valid only at participating MGM-owned dining outlets.

mgm $600 air travel credit

Travel Credit

While the Platinum Experience is going away (at least temporarily), a new benefit for Platinum elites is being offered.  Members get $600 when they hit Platinum status and another $600 when they hit Noir.  Again, status match elites don’t earn this benefit.

One (1) air travel credit benefit of up to $600 is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying Platinum member who has earned the minimum Tier Credits associated with such Tier Level during such Tier Status Earning Year based on spend during such period. One (1) additional air travel credit benefit of up to $600 is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying NOIR member who is invited to NOIR Tier Level during such Tier Status Earning Year based on spend (including earning the necessary Tier Credits) during such period. Accordingly, a qualifying member who earns the minimum Tier Credits associated with both Platinum and NOIR Tier Levels (and who is invited to NOIR) during such Tier Status Earning Year is eligible to receive two separate air travel credits of up to $600 each, totaling up to $1,200, subject to these term and conditions and the MGM Rewards Rules. Members who receive their Tier status through a third-party or other partnership tier match program are not eligible for the benefit . Air travel credit is not awarded based on a member’s Tier Level status as of the beginning of the Tier Status Earning Year. Air travel must be booked directly by qualifying member and travel must be completed within twelve (12) months after qualifying for the benefit.

Is complimentary valet going away? I see no mention of this.

The new MGM Rewards program launches today: Here's what you should know, especially if you're a Hyatt elite

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

In early January, MGM Rewards announced it would replace its M life Rewards program with a new MGM Rewards program on Feb. 1, 2022. The launch date of the new MGM Rewards program is finally here, and we have you covered with the inside scoop.

"The enhancements we've introduced with MGM Rewards are rooted in feedback shared by our members and allow us to invest in providing members progressively more valuable benefits at each tier, said Anil Mansukhani, MGM Resorts' Vice President of Loyalty Marketing.

With the new MGM Rewards program launch, I got an interview with Mansukhani to get insight on the topics that matter most to World of Hyatt elites who match their status to MGM . After all, World of Hyatt Discoverists can match to MGM Rewards Pearl status while Explorists and Globalists can match to MGM Rewards Gold status.

How the new MGM Rewards program compares to M life

mgm $600 air travel credit

Regardless of whether you earn MGM status through gaming and stays or through a status match from Hyatt, you may be interested in how the new MGM Rewards program compares to the old M life Rewards program. Here's a quick overview of the highlights at each tier:

Many MGM loyalists will find it more difficult to earn status with the MGM Rewards program. If you want to earn status via tier points, you'll earn as follows:

  • Spend : Earn 4 Tier Credits per dollar of eligible spend
  • Slots and tables : Earn 8 Tier Credits per dollar of theoretical loss to the casino (THEO)

You'll qualify for a tier beginning each Feb. 1 based on the tier credits you earn from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of the previous year. However, if you advance to a higher tier at any time, you'll enjoy the benefits of that tier for at least one full year.

MGM Rewards is offering double Tier Credits at MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2022. So if you're looking to qualify for MGM Rewards status based on tier credits, this spring is a good time to try out the new MGM Rewards perks in Las Vegas.

One additional perk of the new MGM Rewards program is the ability to earn MGM Rewards points on various types of spend, including:

  • Playing slots, video lottery terminals or video poker
  • When gaming based on your time played, average bet and game type
  • On hotel and dining spend

You can then redeem MGM Rewards points for stays, dining, entertainment and more at MGM Rewards locations throughout the U.S.

Your MGM Rewards points will typically expire after six months of inactivity. But, points won't expire for Pearl+ (how MGM Rewards denotes Pearl members and above) members as long as they hold Pearl status or higher.

A closer look at MGM Rewards perks

mgm $600 air travel credit

Several perks stand out when comparing the old M life Rewards program and the new MGM Rewards program.

Importantly, Pearl+ members will still get complimentary self-parking and Gold+ members will still get complimentary valet parking. When asked about the value of MGM's parking perks, Mansukhani told me:

"As part of our desire to offer real, meaningful benefits that give immediate value to our premium members, providing free self-parking for Pearl+ and free valet parking for Gold+ is a great way to do that. Parking fees have become something difficult to avoid in almost any major city or entertainment destination, so we want to recognize our most loyal members and make it easy and seamless for them to visit any of our MGM Rewards destinations as often as they'd like."

Complimentary tickets to select MGM Rewards concerts in Las Vegas for Pearl+ members also appears to be a valuable perk. Mansukhani had the following to say about the first concert, and why MGM members should be excited about this perk:

"MGM Resorts is a leader in entertainment so it is important that we create unique and exclusive experiences for our members that they couldn't get anywhere else on the Las Vegas Strip. While we're still finalizing details, we can say that these concerts will feature well-known A-list artists and we're looking to announce our first event very soon, which will be scheduled for April. These concerts will not be open to the public and will be exclusively offered to our Pearl+ members as a reward for their loyalty."

However, some perks are only available to MGM Rewards members who qualify for their status based on tier credits. For example, MGM Rewards Gold members who earn their status via a match from World of Hyatt won't be eligible for the $100 tier achievement celebration dining experience unless they've also earned the required tier credits for the Gold tier.

Noting this limitation, I asked Mansukhani about MGM Rewards' decision not to limit waived resort fees to Gold+ members who earned status via gaming. Here's his explanation for why MGM Rewards decided to give members who earn Gold status via a status match from Hyatt waived resort fees:

"One of the great differentiators between MGM Rewards and others in our industry is our loyalty partnerships. As a valued strategic partner, it was important for us to offer new meaningful benefits that had immediate value for our premium World of Hyatt members. Our research showed that many of our members wanted waived resorts fees and this benefit would be one of the most valued. We already have what we believe to be some of the best resorts in the world within the MGM Rewards portfolio, but we still want to give our Gold+ members even more of a reason to book their next stay with us. We believe that waiving resorts fees for World of Hyatt members will help give them another reason to stay with us every time, and show that we recognize their value."

Mansukhani confirmed to TPG that World of Hyatt members who are also Gold+ members get waived resort fees when earning World of Hyatt points and tier-qualifying nights toward World of Hyatt status. To do this, book directly with MGM Rewards International, notify the front desk agent at check-in that you'd like to earn World of Hyatt points and ensure that both your MGM Rewards and World of Hyatt membership numbers are on your reservation and final hotel folio.

MGM may not waive your resort fee automatically, though. Even if your stay is eligible, you may still need to visit the front desk during your stay to request that the resort fees are waived. I expect you won't have any issues if you meet the booking and status requirements, but I hope that most MGM Rewards Gold+ members won't need to jump through this extra hoop.

Additional notes for World of Hyatt elites

mgm $600 air travel credit

If you earn MGM status via MGM's partnership with World of Hyatt , you'll probably find the new MGM Rewards program to be an improvement over M life.

You might as well match your status if you have World of Hyatt elite status. However, I'm still seeing the M life Rewards program on MGM's website right now — so you may need to wait for the MGM Rewards program to go live on MGM's website before matching.

Once you're ready to match your status, click here and log in to your World of Hyatt account. Some World of Hyatt elites have experienced issues connecting their accounts if they're already logged into their MGM account. I recommend logging out of your MGM account before attempting your status match.

If you want quick World of Hyatt elite status, consider adding the World of Hyatt Credit Card to your wallet. This card automatically grants Discoverist status and five qualifying night credits each year.

Finally, Hyatt has two off-strip Hyatt Place hotels in Las Vegas. And we know that the Rio Las Vegas will be renovated and eventually become multiple World of Hyatt properties. When asked about the value World of Hyatt loyalists get when staying with MGM resorts in Las Vegas compared to staying with a Hyatt-branded property, Mansukhani said:

"As part of MGM Rewards and World of Hyatt's existing strategic loyalty alliance, MGM Rewards offers 13 resort destinations located directly on the Las Vegas Strip offering some of the most iconic and popular entertainment, dining and amenities in town where World of Hyatt members can earn and redeem World of Hyatt points. As an added benefit of this alliance, World of Hyatt members staying at participating MGM Rewards destinations and booking directly through either MGM Resorts or Hyatt channels can earn World of Hyatt Tier-Qualifying Nights in addition to MGM Rewards Tier Credits. Ultimately, World of Hyatt members who are also MGM Rewards members should choose the property in Las Vegas that best meets their preferences."

And indeed, it is all about preferences. For example, I may still choose the Hyatt Place Las Vegas for its airport shuttle when I'm simply overnighting in Las Vegas between two flights. But for multi-night stays, I'm excited to try out MGM properties now that I'm a Gold member and can stay without paying resort fees.

Favorite parts of the new MGM Rewards program, according to MGM Resorts' VP of Loyalty Marketing

mgm $600 air travel credit

As MGM Resorts' Vice President of Loyalty Marketing, Mansukhani played a significant role in sculpting the new MGM Rewards program into what launched today. So, I asked him about his favorite part of the program. Here's his response:

"There are a lot of great aspects of the new program so it's hard to just pick one favorite. First, we're excited that our non-gaming customers will now be able to earn MGM Rewards Points for virtually all of their spend across all 20+ MGM Resorts destinations nationwide. Under M life, these customers spent a lot of money with us, but didn't get as much value out of the program so we're happy to recognize them for their spend with MGM Rewards Points and also allow them to redeem those Points for a wide variety of amazing hotel, dining, spa and entertainment experiences that only MGM Resorts can offer.
Another very exciting change is that we're now offering elevated and meaningful new benefits to our most loyal customers such as waived resorts fees, celebration dinners, airfare credit to Las Vegas, room upgrades and complimentary 4 p.m. late checkout.
Lastly, the new program now standardizes Tier Credit earning throughout all of our MGM Rewards properties which allows us to offer more meaningful benefits for members who really do spend and visit us regularly which is always the primary objective for any loyalty program."

None of his favorites are surprising. But, it's enlightening to see what Mansukhani highlighted. After all, the new program seems to incentivize non-gamers who may not usually be interested in earning elite status. But, of course, the new program also strives to reward high-tier members with competitive perks.

Related: The economics behind hotel loyalty programs

Bottom line

Some of the perks of the new MGM Rewards program make the program competitive with Caesars Rewards. In particular, waived resort fees for Gold+ members and a tier achievement celebration dinner for qualifying members mirror perks found in the Caesars Rewards program.

The new MGM Rewards program is also a net positive for World of Hyatt elites who don't care much about earning tier credits with MGM. After all, World of Hyatt Explorist and Globalist elites who match to MGM Rewards Gold status will now get extra perks.

But, you'll earn tier credits — and in turn MGM status — at a slower rate on nongaming spending like hotel accommodations, dining and spa services under the new MGM Rewards program. So if you're looking to earn status with MGM Rewards through tier credits, now is a good time to access what status your typical spending and gaming will get you under the new program.

MGM Rewards Replaces MGM’s M life Rewards Starting February 1, 2022

MGM Rewards replaces Mlife

MGM Resorts announced today that their new MGM Rewards program will formally launch on February 1, 2022, replacing MGM’s “M life Rewards” program.

I know that you’re thinking you already knew this…. but no, all we knew about was the program name change, an extra month of tier credit earning (Jan 1 -31 counts for both last year and this year) and that non-gaming spend will only earn 4 tier credits per dollar, down from 25.

Now, we have most of the fine details, and many are quite exciting.

For MGM Rewards Gold members (what you get if you are on the Status Match Merry Go Round ), the biggest and most exciting change is waived resort fees , matching what the equivalent Caesars Rewards Diamond level already offers their members. On my trip to Las Vegas for ZorkFest last month, I paid $39 a night in resort fees at Aria, plus tax, for almost $200 in resort fees in 4 nights. I would have certainly welcomed this benefit!

MGM Resorts’ five member tier levels – Sapphire, Pearl, Gold, Platinum and NOIR – remain the same.

New MGM Rewards Tier Benefits

Per the release, MGM Rewards offers members new and exclusive marquee benefits, including waived resort fees (Gold+), Tier Achievement Travel Credit to Las Vegas (Platinum+), complimentary tickets to MGM Rewards concerts (Pearl+), advanced suite upgrades for up to three nights (Platinum+), access to exclusive tier appreciation events and experiences (Gold+) and 4 p.m. late check-out (based on availability; Platinum+). As an added benefit, MGM Rewards Points and Slot Dollars will not expire for Pearl+ members due to account inactivity.

As mentioned, those resort fees for Gold + are huge. It also looks like there will be special events for Gold + (TBD).

But what if you can achieve MGM Rewards Platinum? It looks like you’ll get a travel credit towards a trip to Las Vegas (?!) as well as some sort of “advanced” suite upgrades (perhaps a limited number confirmable in advance? it’s not clear) as well as a 4pm checkout. That last bit would be amazing, though I note it is “based on availability” so it will remain to be seen if that is freely granted or not. (A guaranteed late checkout like Marriott offers Platinum and up would have been better, although those do exclude resorts from the guarantee and all MGM properties are resorts anyway).

There will also be some sort of Celebration Dinner (I can only imagine this is very similar to the $100 Celebration Dinner Caesars Diamond gets) and they also are dropping the number of tier credits needed for Pearl to 20,000. All other tier earning remains the same, despite the massive drop in tier credits earned for non-gaming spend. This certainly says they are leaning back into gambling as a more primary focus as compared to the rooms, dining, and entertainment spend.

Lastly, it looks like members from Pearl and up will get complimentary concert tickets.

Here’s a chart of benefits by tier:

MGM Rewards tier benefits details

1 Offers will vary in terms of frequency, ticket types, number of tickets, location, dates, etc. based on member’s Tier status and spend/gaming activity. Availability of tickets may be limited by capacity or otherwise and are subject to availability. Redemption instructions will be included in offer communication.

2 Applicable daily resort fees will be waived on up to two room reservations per trip when an eligible member books direct, under their name, with MGM Resorts International and his/her eligible MGM Rewards account number is attached to such reservations.

3 One (1) Tier Achievement Celebration Dining Experience benefit valid for qualifying member is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying Gold, qualifying Platinum or qualifying NOIR member who has earned the minimum Tier Credits associated with reaching the applicable Tier Level (and, for NOIR Tier Level, invited to such level during such Tier Status Earning Period) based on spend during such period. Members who receive their Tier Level status through a third-party or other partnership tier match program are not eligible for the benefit. The dining credit cannot be used for gratuities, is non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. To redeem your dining credit, you must present your MGM Rewards card at time of payment. Offer may not be used in conjunction with any other offer. Member will not receive the cash value or be compensated in any manner for any unused dining credit (if any) which will be forfeited if not used during the applicable dining experience. MGM reserves the right to modify the amount of the dining credit offered and/or otherwise modify and/or limit quantity/type of items offered (e.g., alcoholic beverages) all of which may vary based on Tier Level reached and other factors.

4 One (1) air travel credit benefit of up to $600 is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying Platinum member who has earned the minimum Tier Credits associated with such Tier Level during such Tier Status Earning Year based on spend during such period. Members who receive their Tier status through a third-party or other partnership tier match program are not eligible for the benefit. Air travel credit is not awarded based on a member’s Tier Level status as of the beginning of the Tier Status Earning Year. Air travel must be booked directly by qualifying member and travel must be completed within twelve (12) months after qualifying for the benefit. Travel itinerary must be in the name of such qualifying member. Air travel credit will be reimbursed based solely on the paid ticket price (including upgrades, but excluding luggage/baggage fees, pet fees, etc.) of the qualifying member’s ticket and of his/her guest(s) reflected on proof of purchase if all on the same single travel itinerary and in the name of such qualifying member. Costs, fees and expenses associated with obtaining and/or using airline points, miles, etc. to obtain air transportation are not eligible for reimbursement. Qualifying members will not receive the difference (if any) between the offered maximum air travel credit amount and the actual paid cost of the ticket(s). Qualifying member must provide designated MGM staff with a copy of receipt and other required documentation at least one week prior to scheduled hotel check-in day. Air travel credit will be awarded in the form of MGM Resorts International resort credit (or as otherwise determined in MGM’s sole discretion) that can only be used during the Las Vegas hotel stay associated with such trip. Resort credits are valid at participating MGM Resorts International destinations in Las Vegas only and can be used for hotel accommodations that are booked directly with MGM Resorts International, and select food and beverage, nightlife/entertainment, retail merchandise, and spa services. Resort credits cannot be used for gratuities and gambling. To redeem your resort credits, you must charge the expense to your room at the outlet or other participating location. Resort credit is non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. Member will not receive the cash value or be compensated in any manner for any unused MGM Resort credits which will be forfeited if not used on trip as set forth herein. Credits must be used prior to guest’s checking out of hotel. Subject to MGM Rewards Program Rules available at mgmrewards.com/rules.

5 One (1) cruise benefit is offered during the current Tier Status Earning Year to each qualifying Platinum or qualifying NOIR members (valid for such qualifying member plus one (1) guest and subject to availability) who has earned the minimum Tier Credits associated with Platinum Tier Level or who is invited to NOIR Tier Level during such Tier Status Earning Year based on spend during such period. Accordingly, a qualifying member who earns the minimum Tier Credits associated with both Platinum and NOIR Tier Levels (and who is invited to NOIR) during such Tier Status Earning Year is eligible to receive both a Platinum and NOIR cruise benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, cruise must be booked during the applicable Tier Status Benefit Year (2/1 – 1/31) for travel completed within three (3) months after such period. Length of cruise and cruise destination will depend upon member’s earned Tier Level status and recent MGM Resorts spend and gaming play. Members are responsible for transportation to/from cruise embarkation and final disembarkation locations. Certain restrictions, fees and limitations apply. Subject to additional terms and conditions available at mgmresorts.com/royalandcelebritycruises.

Press Release

I gave you the juiciest bits above, but here are a few more details straight from the Press Release:

Additional program highlights include:

  • All members can now earn MGM Rewards Points when they play, stay or dine at all domestic MGM Resorts destinations on directly booked rooms and food & beverage, as well as slots and now, table games. In addition to earning MGM Reward Points, slots players can now earn Slot Dollars (formerly referred to as PointPlay) for their play.
  • Non-gaming and gaming members alike will now be able to redeem MGM Rewards Points for a multitude of experiences from hotel stays and food & beverage to entertainment, award-winning spas and more.
  • New Tier Advancement Celebration Dinners and access to exclusive tier appreciation events recognize members who reach Gold or above tiers based on 2022 gaming and non-gaming spend.
  • Extended earning window – To celebrate MGM Rewards’ launch, Tier Credits earned by members from January 1- January 31 will count toward both 2022 and 2023 Tier Status earning.
  • Tier Credit multiplier promotion – As a welcome to MGM Rewards, all members are invited to take advantage of a limited-time 2x multiplier on Tier Credits earned at the Company’s Las Vegas resorts February 1 – April 30, 2022 (at the applicable earning rates). Tier Credits may be earned on all gaming play as well as spend on hotel accommodations, dining and spa services.
  • Tier Credits required to achieve each Tier Status remain the same for all tiers with the exception of Pearl which will be lowered from 25,000 to 20,000 Tier Credits required.
  • The enhanced MGM Rewards app simplifies the digital experience, allows members to easily review their tier status and benefits, and visualize how they can advance to the next tier. Play and spend are recognized as a single account, making it easy to stay, play and dine wherever and whenever members prefer.
  • Smart integration between MGM Rewards and BetMGM , the Company’s leading sports betting and iGaming offering, unlocks even more rewards for MGM Rewards members. Play with BetMGM earns members digital rewards for more BetMGM online play, Tier Credits towards advancing to new MGM Rewards tiers, and access to tailored offers and real-world experiences across MGM Resorts and BetMGM.
  • MGM Rewards has partnered with leading brands to bring members even more rewards by land, air and sea. From perks with brands including Hyatt Hotels, Southwest Airlines and Avis Rental Cars to complimentary cruises with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Lines, with more on the horizon, MGM Rewards ensures members can enjoy world-class travel experiences even when they’re not at MGM Resorts properties. Additional partnerships with premier brands will be unveiled in the coming months.

Overall, while early news about the “devaluation” made the rounds, the news is, in my view, quite positive.

Previously there was almost no reason to shoot for the Platinum tier as it was almost the same as Gold, not even waiving resort fees. Now, even those matched to Gold from Hyatt Explorist will be happy with the waived resort fees, but they’ll also have a reason to gun for Platinum as the new benefits are substantial. I’ll reserve full judgement until I can see all of the fine print, but I’m impressed and intrigued right now.

Keep in mind that I’m writing this from the perspective of matched Gold.  Those earning each year from scratch will no doubt feel a bit less satisfied.

They also have a teaser website with some limited details.

There were a few questions I’d asked MGM but had not heard back as of this article’s press time. I will update if/when I get a bit more info.

Couple of questions: 1. Is the promo on top of the 4x for non-gaming spend, i.e. – you get 8x for non-gaming spend? 2. What about the gaming spend – is it still 25x? 3. How does gaming spend work with the 2x promo – does it make it 50x?

I won't hit Platinum until my next trip...but I had the Gold $100 dinner credit on my last trip. Go to the MGM rewards desk and they will load it for you as MGM rewards points. I'm not yet certain how the air travel credit is done.

mgm $600 air travel credit

In out case, the $100 dinner credit was added as 10,000 rewards points. It could then be used as a $100 credit for anything.

It seems different than Caesar's Diamond Celebration dinner. I think Diamond celebration you have to use all at once but I guess for MGM, you can split it up. Am I correct?

correct...it is given as MGM rewards points.

mgm $600 air travel credit

that sounds kinda awesome rhino...

Once we reached the platinum level, we went to the reward desk and show them our travel payment invoice

(WestJet emailed correspondences). They verified and paid us $600 in cash. No questioned asked.

9pays and The B:

The terms and conditions of the Gold and Platinum dinner awards specifically state that they are supposed to work like CET's Diamond Dinner (must be used in one sitting), with the exception that the award expires 1 year from the date you cross the tier threshold instead of on Jan 31 of the following player benefit year like CET.

It is true that they are giving you the award by adding Rewards Points to your account. I would NOT be sure that you can use those points in any increment any time you want, that's not what the T&Cs say.

I have not seen this tested yet.

One test would be to go into a restaurant, tell them you want to use your Gold award, and have the F&B portion of the bill be let's say $95. If you then have $100 in Rewards Points deducted, you will know they are running it according to the TCs. If they only deduct $95 in points, that still leaves open the question of whether the remaining $5 will expire after a year.

The other issue would be if you go into a restaurant and you don't say anything to the server except you want to pay with points. You're assuming they will draw on your award dinner points first, but that may not be what happens. They may draw on your regular points instead. Which could possibly leave your awards points left behind to expire.

I don't think we will know whether they are giving you the award points with no restrictions or running it according to the T&Cs until either the first scenario happens, or until people start having Rewards Credits mysteriously disappear from their accounts a year after they earned the award because of the second scenario.

If $100 goes to MGM rewards points at the Rewards center, you should be able to use it how many times as you wish. I do recall seeing expiring in a year but not sure how that will work since most will have rewards points already before adding 10,000 points. I guess the first 10,000 points will be deducted as dining credit.

As for TR Dimond Celebration certificate - you don't need to go to the Rewards center to redeem but at the restaurant and you can't use again.

SherwoodParkerCA - which MGM property did you go to get $600 cash? I thought they were suppose to credit to your room and use it as hotel credit.

MGM Rewards Rolls Out Major Changes, Including Waived Resort Fees

Sally French

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Update: MGM Rewards and World of Hyatt have announced an end to the partnership discussed below. Additionally, MGM and Marriott have announced a forthcoming partnership. You can read more about these developments here .

MGM Resorts International, which runs more than a dozen properties in Las Vegas including the Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and New York New York, as well as other resorts around the U.S., China and Japan, announced today a massive overhaul to its loyalty rewards program.

What’s changing for M Life

The name change from M life Rewards to MGM Rewards is just the start. Among the most notable changes to the program include complimentary self-parking with Pearl status or higher, and — for the highest tiers of status — air travel credits for flights to Las Vegas, complimentary cruises and dinner parties.

And there’s one new benefit set to make waves bigger than what you’ll find at the Mandalay Bay Beach wave pool — waived resort fees with direct bookings for members with Gold status or higher.

Resort fees have created among the biggest headaches for travelers — and have even led to lawsuits . These are additional fees often not advertised up front, which resorts typically say covers the cost of amenities that can be as simple as in-room Wi-Fi, as well as things like use of the pool.

At most of the Las Vegas MGM properties, resort fees typically run between $35 and $45 per night, which can be particularly astounding when base room rates sometimes cost less than $50 (thus turning what you may have thought was a $50 nightly rate to closer to $100). At present, it’s tough to find Las Vegas hotels without resort fees .

Plus, for the first time in the program’s history, you’ll earn MGM Rewards points for non-gaming spending.

That aligns the MGM Rewards program with Caesars Rewards , which is the casino rewards program from one of MGM’s closest competitors. In that program, you earn 1 Caesars reward credit for every dollar on almost all spending at Caesars properties, including room reservations and purchases at restaurants, entertainment, shops and amenities. Like the Caesars Rewards program, MGM Rewards lets you redeem your points toward dining, entertainment and hotel stays.

» Learn more: Caesars versus MGM Rewards

With MGM Rewards, you’ll earn 4 tier credits and 1 MGM Rewards point per $1 spent on eligible hotel stays and dining across all tiers at all MGM Resorts destinations.

MGM Rewards status levels

The refreshed MGM Rewards tiers are Sapphire, Pearl, Gold, Platinum and Noir. Here's how to reach them and their best benefits.

How to attain Sapphire status: Simply sign up and you’ll join the program at this entry-level.

Sapphire status perks include:

Earn MGM Rewards points for purchases including entertainment, dining and room stays at all MGM Rewards destinations.

Earn Slot Dollars when you play slots, video poker and video lottery terminals at all MGM Rewards destinations.

Access to the guaranteed lowest room rates when booking direct.

How to attain Pearl status: Earn 20,000 tier credits (previously 25,000) per earning year, or match with World of Hyatt Discoverist status.

Pearl status perks include:

All of the above Sapphire perks.

10% bonus on Slot Dollars.

Complimentary self-parking.

No expiration.

How to attain Gold status: Earn 75,000 tier credits per earning year, or match with World of Hyatt Explorist status.

Gold status perks include:

All of the above Pearl and Sapphire perks.

20% bonus on Slot Dollars.

Waived resort fees for up to two rooms when booking direct.

Space-available room upgrades.

A dedicated line at hotel check-in and some restaurants.

A dining credit worth $100 for participating MGM-owned restaurants (though you do not receive this benefit if you earned status through a matching program).

How to attain Platinum status: Earn 200,000 tier credits per earning year.

Platinum status perks include:

All of the above Gold, Pearl and Sapphire perks.

30% bonus on Slot Dollars.

Late check-out until 4 p.m.

Annual suite upgrade in Las Vegas.

Dining credit worth $200 (rather than $100) for participating MGM-owned restaurants (though you do not receive this benefit if you earned status through a matching program).

A $600 annual air travel credit to Las Vegas.

A complimentary cruise on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises. You’ll receive one cruise for two per year in an Oceanview Stateroom consisting of a three, four, or five-night Bahamas or Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises.

Expedited valet and taxi service.

How to attain Noir status: Invitation only. NerdWallet asked, and MGM Rewards told us they do not disclose how status is granted.

Noir status perks include:

All of the above Platinum, Gold, Pearl and Sapphire perks.

Earn a 40% bonus on Slot Dollars.

A dining credit worth $500 (rather than $100 or $200) for participating MGM-owned restaurants.

A $1,200 annual air travel credit (rather than $600) to Las Vegas.

As far as the cruise goes, you’ll get upgraded service One cruise for two per year in a Balcony Stateroom consisting of a seven-Night Caribbean or Bermuda cruise on Royal Caribbean or seven-Night Caribbean, Europe, Alaska or Bermuda cruise on Celebrity Cruises.

Who benefits the most from the MGM Rewards changes?

Non-gambling resort goers.

The biggest winners here are resort goers who are more likely to devote their vacation funds to dining, activities and other entertainment besides gambling. The old loyalty program was rewarding when it came to spending on slots, but not much else.

Even if you never gamble, you could still find yourself in the top tiers if you spend enough money on other Vegas expenses, like restaurants and shows.

Another crew of people who benefit are those who don’t mind booking directly, rather than through an online travel agency like Expedia .

World of Hyatt members who want to match status

Another set of big winners here are World of Hyatt members, which is the loyalty program for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. A partnership between the two companies allows you to status match. Plus, members can earn World of Hyatt points for stays at all Las Vegas MGM Rewards destinations.

As was the case with the old program, you can choose either MGM Rewards tier credits or World of Hyatt points for spending at Hyatt properties.

Here’s how status matching looks for Hyatt members:

Table showing World of Hyatt/MGM Rewards status matching

Self-parking at MGM Resorts in Las Vegas starts at $15 per night, which alone can be enough to offset the World of Hyatt Credit Card annual fee of $95 . Explorist status can be more easily earned by holding the Hyatt-branded card, which includes 5 qualifying night credits towards your next tier status every year, as well as two additional qualifying night credits towards status every time you spend $5,000 on the card. And it might be worth chasing simply for waived resort fees alone.

World of Hyatt card members can use this link to match status.

A limited time bonus

To launch the program, MGM Rewards is offering a limited-time bonus. You’ll get a 2x multiplier on tier credits earned at MGM’s Las Vegas resorts between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2022.

How to maximize your rewards
