Middle East Tours & Vacations

Woman laughing, with guide, wearing traditional middle eastern clothes in the desert at sunset

The Middle East is living, breathing proof of an old maxim: you don’t know, until you go.

Forget the headlines and the hyperbole; this is the cradle of civilizations, an ancient land emerging as a modern power, with the money, culture and panache to back it up. Ride camels with Bedouin tribespeople across the dunes of the Sahara, haggle for gold in the souqs of downtown Amman, marvel at the Blue Mosque on a Turkey trip , cruise the Nile beneath the white sail of a felucca or float forever in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea. Wherever you go, three things will follow: the faint scent of cloves and camel, the echoing call to prayer and the smiles of people that call this place home.

Mina was the best tour guide. He was so knowledgeable, fun, kind and so enthusiastic. He always answered any questions we had and was always so willing to help. Couldn’t have had a better guide than Mina. We loved every moment of the trip and our group was amazing as well. Such an amazing trip.

Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise

Our guide, Mina, was very knowledgable and helpful when you wanted to find specific things. The accommodations were great, the river cruise was fantastic. Do the trip to Abu Simbal and the Nubian village dinner, it's 100% worth it. It would have been nice to do a tour in Hurghada of the Museum (which is worth the 20 minute walk), the mosque and the church.

Absolute Turkey Tour

Very good trip. The leader Engin was excellent and was at our Bec and call 24/7. I feel for his sanity he needs some nights off and just tell us about a few restaurants but not take us there - do his own thing. The whole group doesn’t need to always be together. We had one person that struggled to keep up with group and I felt some pressure to wait for her or help her- I don’t think she had much insight into the affect she was having on group. Otherwise was a great and diverse group.

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days Tour

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days

Our guides were excellent. Anas, our guide, ensured everything went exceptionally smoothly. I give the guides 5 star review and big thanks. Be aware the train is very old, not nice and recommend not taking. Fly. The food was very good but catered to western travellers where it was would be excellent to have more Egyptian or Arabic food to fully immerse in the cultural experience. Overall the tour was excellent and highly recommend.

Magic of Egypt (with free All inclusive upgrade hurghada hotel) 12 Days Tour

Magic of Egypt (with free All inclusive upgrade hurghada hotel) 12 Days

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included Tour

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included

Where to even begin! We flew in late but our wonderful tour guides waited for us and picked us up and delivered us to our hotel. The entire team were amazing, caring, kind and so so friendly. Our first tour guide Gabe is also an archaeologist so was a wealth of information as well as being an awesome guide, funny and caring. We were then picked up and taken to the airport for our flights to luxor, were met on the other side by Ahmed who was to be our guide for the next few days while we sailed down the beautiful Nile. The entire staff on the boat were exceptional and made us feel welcome and downright loved. Ahmed is a patient, funny, informative and extremely friendly guide and made our tour unforgettable. My partner and I can't recommend this team and this tour enough!

The trip was GREAT. The organisation was good and simple and our guide tour Mo was very kind, nice and very helpful with every aspect of the travel. Also he has a lot of knowledge and he explains everything with a lot of passion!! It was something special.

Essential Egypt (5 Star Hotels) Tour

Essential Egypt (5 Star Hotels)

The whole tour was very well organised. Our guide Mo was very knowledgeable and passionate about the places we went to see. He knew all the tips and tricks to miss the crowds and how to deal with the locals trying to sell us their wares at each of the temples, even giving tips on how to barter and how much to pay. He was also very efficient at keeping us all on time and making sure that time wasn't wasted by waiting for people to get back to the coach. The tour ticked off all the places we wanted to see and in our case my husband wanted to also see the Bent and Red pyramids - Bishoo from TravelTalk dealt with all the arrangements to make sure he got to visit them on our last day. This was our first time doing a tour and it was a very positive experience, As a result we will be looking at what other tours TravelTalk run around the world for future trips. Can highly recommend this tour for discovering Essential Egypt and especially TravelTalk.

What people love about Middle East Tours

My wife and I went on a 17-day tour of Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. The tour was well orchestrated. All the details of getting into and out of countries were handled professionally and with little cause of concern to us. Hand-offs between countries went well. We were guided by knowledgable people who had our best interests at heart (with possibly one exception). The only real complaint I have is that TourRadar turned out to be more of a facilitator than a tour agency with its own guides. I was confused when we got to Israel and found that neither TourRadar nor Click Tours (which answered my online questions) was the agency actually leading the tours. Not knowing that we would be connecting with Consolidated Tour Operators (CTO) led to some initial confusion in the Tel Aviv airport. Expecting to be linked up with Click Tours and knowing nothing about CTO, we missed connecting with the airport facilitator in Tel Aviv for nearly an hour while each of tried to find the other. If I had been told to look for a CTO representative, our stressful introduction to the tour would have gone much more smoothly. In Israel and Jordan, CTO handled our tour. In Egypt, the agency was Sylvia. I had expected to be part of a group that held together for the entire 17 days, but that wasn't the case. Groups formed and disbanded based on what individuals planned to visit. In Israel there were 11 of us, and we bonded quickly. In Jordan I was surprised that our group dwindled to five. And in Egypt there was only my wife and me. That left us vulnerable in Egypt to the care of our guide, who, because there was just the two of us, managed to fleece us of $150. I would never have signed up with TourRadar if I had understood that my wife and I would be left alone at one point without the safety of a group and unprepared to deal with a guide we didn't fully trust.
Mina was an absolutely amazing guide! Would definitely recommend!! :)

Tips and inspiration for your trip, top 5 things to see in the middle east.

  • When traveling in   Jordan , a visit to the Dead Sea is not to be missed . Float in the surreal waters or enjoy the   therapeutic experience.   Take this one step further and   spend the day in one of the Dead Sea’s famous spas   and pamper yourself in this incredible place. While you’re here, travel the short distance to the Red Sea and see all of the vibrant life in its waters, perfect for   snorkeling and scuba diving.
  • At the heart of   Jordan   lies the lunar landscape of Wadi Rum . Trek across its dunes,   camping overnight   and enjoying incredible barbecued meals under the stars in the desert. You may recognize the bizarre rock formations from some of your favorite films, such as Star Wars.
  • Explore Isfahan city and its treasures as you travel through   Iran .   See the   ancient Persian history   that is still visible around every corner. Visit   incredible buildings, gardens and mosques   and marvel at the colorful and unforgettable architecture.
  • While you’re in   Iran , you can also see the ancient ruins of Persepolis,   which is one of the world’s most celebrated   UNESCO World Heritage Sites .
  • Israel   is a fantastic option for travelers interested in history and culture   here, with sites such as   Nazareth and Galilee   that have enough history and significance for even the most avid history buffs to sink their teeth in to.

Things to know before traveling to The Middle East

For first-time visitors, The Middle-East can seem a little strange, since   many of its customs and culture is different.   Here are a few things to be aware of to make sure that you’re prepared for your trip.

  • Since   The Middle East has fairly strict rules regarding modesty and clothes   which are deemed to be revealing, it is advisable to   dress conservatively,   especially if you plan on visiting religious sites. Shorts or sleeveless t shirts are generally to be avoided, whether you’re male or female, as are short skirts for women. Women are not forced to cover up totally by any means, but you should be respectful of The Middle Eastern culture and avoid showing too much skin.
  • Throughout your trip, you may be offered coffee by locals, hosts, guides and even shop keepers. In The Middle East, this is seen as a gesture of hospitality and, as such, it is considered rude to decline the offer. Try to always accept, or if you have to decline, do so with grace and understanding.
  • Prices in The Middle East are a strange concept, since,   often, prices are by no means fixed . Not only is haggling common, it is usually expected. If you don’t feel comfortable discussing prices in this way, a guide can always assist you, but you may find that you enjoy this tradition that is so different from western custom.
  • ’Salamu alaikum’ is the greeting used by almost all muslims - why not learn it and give the people you meet a proper greeting?
  • Lastly, Don’t come to The Middle East expecting a glass of wine with every meal.   Alcohol (and pork!) is harder to come by than you may be accustomed to.

Middle Eastern Food

With many Middle Eastern foods having become staples in Western countries, its no surprise   that food here is a hugely enjoyable part of any trip…

  • Enjoy traditional foods such as   hummus, falafel or baba ghanoush   made authentically in a local restaurant or a home stay. These are Middle Eastern classics as you’ve never had them before.
  • Tabouleh is a vegetarian mixture of herbs, tomatoes, parsley, bulgur and onions   and is seasoned with a traditional mixture of olive oil, lemon juice and salt. Enjoy this as a topping, an accompaniment or just by itself!
  • Shawarma is a rotisserie meat preparation, rich in flavor and a perfect comfort food.   Eaten with a deliciously fluffy flat bread, local herbs and spices and a sauce of your choice.
  • Foul Mudammes is a delicious Middle Eastern breakfast   made from boiled and mashed fava beans with a spicy soup-like sauce. A hearty breakfast, it is traditionally eaten with brad and is sure to fuel a day of Middle Eastern exploration.
  • Mujadarra, made of rice and lentils, is a Middle Eastern variation on rice and beans,   which can be found in many cultures. Great for vegetarians, this tasty dish is served as a side dish to accompany any meal but can be served as a main dish too.

Major Cities in The Middle East

  • Whilst   Petra in Jordan   is an ancient city, rather than a modern one, it had to make the list. As one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world it is not to be missed. See the massive buildings carved in to red stone and marvel at these stunning remains of a city from many many years ago.
  • Tel Aviv in Israel   is one of the world’s most surprising cities. The majority of its population is Jewish and the culture here is everywhere. However, at the same time it is remarkably cosmopolitan, with delicious wine and food. Whilst respect is still paramount, this is a Middle-Eastern city where you can let your hair down.
  • Any visit to The Middle-East would not be truly complete with a trip to   Jerusalem in Israel.   This city is truly fascinating and provides an insight into both Jewish and Muslim custom. The food here is also delicious.
  • Stop by   Tehran in Iran   and visit its many amazing sites, such as the Golestan Palace Complex or carpet museum showing an ancient craft that is still in practice today.

Middle East — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The middle east is such a large area vastly covered in deserts, and is most known for its textiles, spices and endless bazaars. The countries included in the Middle East are Bahrain, Iran , Iraq, Israel , Jordan , Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman , Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen.

Tour Highlights

  • The holiest place for Christians, Muslims and Jews in the world is also located in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a place worth staying multiple days in on your journey through the middle east so you can enjoy the endless nightlife, food, history, and the modern amenities of the city as well.
  • Explore the vast deserts of the UAE on the back of a 4-wheeler over the sand dunes or marvel at the majestic city of Dubai, a sprawling tourism hub in the middle east full of night life, shopping and the world famous Burj Al Arab (Sailboat-shaped luxury hotel).
  • Find out where the Three Wise Men were from in the city of Amadiya in Iraq located just 10km away from the Turkish border. With over 5,000 years of history and located at the top of a flat mountain and surrounded by sprawling forests and mountain, it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Middle East.

Travel Tips

  • While most of the countries in the Middle East are safe, it’s important to note that you should not venture into Yemen or Syria for security concerns.
  • When traveling in many Middle Eastern countries you should be conscious about their dress codes. When in Dubai as an example, you should dress conservatively especially in religious sites. That includes long-sleeves and pants, as well as lose-fitting clothing for women (nothing revealing).
  • Additional do’s and don’ts include: You should haggle at the bazaars, you should never be overly drunk in public, and try to refrain from any public displays of affection.

Hot Air Ballon in the Middle East

How We Started

Our story began with a vision fueled by the Middle East's growing appeal for travel, a trend confirmed by a 20% increase in international arrivals, as reported by the UNWTO. This was in sharp contrast to the World's 16% decline from 2019 numbers, signaling a unique opportunity for growth in a thriving market.

That was coupled with Saudi Arabia's entry into the global tourism scene, revolutionizing connectivity across Middle Eastern destinations. This ushered in a new era of multi-country travel routes, in high demand among travelers. It was a clear gap that the Middle East Travel Alliance was ready to fill, marking our strategic entry into this dynamic and evolving travel landscape.

Why Middle East travel is growing faster ‘than any other region’

E ditor’s Note: This CNN series is, or was, sponsored by the country it highlights. CNN retains full editorial control over subject matter, reporting and frequency of the articles and videos within the sponsorship, in compliance with  our policy .

Last week, travel and tourism industry representatives from more than 150 countries gathered at the annual Arabian Travel Market trade show, held this year in Dubai.

There, CNN’s Eleni Giokos spoke with Julia Simpson, president of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), about trends in tourism in the Middle East, and the challenge of making travel more sustainable.

The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

CNN: The tourism sector is flourishing in many parts of this region and also coming under pressure in others. Tell me about the macro trends that you’re seeing right now.

Julia Simpson: Well, it’s really interesting because travel isn’t just back, it’s absolutely booming. We are here in the Middle East — this is the first time I’ve been to the Arabian Travel Market — but what’s interesting is everyone’s telling me they have never, ever seen it this busy. So I think that is actually very, very descriptive of what we are seeing globally: a very strong market everywhere for travel and tourism.

CNN: But in terms of the interest and demand for the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council nations) and for the Middle East as a whole, have you ever seen this kind of demand before?

Simpson: Well, the GCC and Middle East is growing faster than any other region. The Saudis just celebrated their 100 millionth visitor, Dubai is just announcing a brand-new airport, which is stunning, and visitors are flocking to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al-Khaimah here in the (United Arab Emirates). We are seeing revenue numbers have gone up by 50% and the contribution to GDP — in terms of the amount of money that travel and tourism is making and contributing to the economy — has gone up by 25%. It’s very, very strong. So the whole of the region is doing very well.

CNN: Why do you think that is? Is it the product offering? Is it because it basically is still a frontier market in many places, where other destinations have been so popular for such a long time?

Simpson: I think there are two things playing here. First of all, Dubai is now very well established globally. People come here, they know it’s safe, they know they can have a great time, very high-quality, good cuisine, good art, interesting culture. And then the rest of the GCC is really developing. So in Saudi (Arabia), the project in Diriyah is incredible. They have taken an old Saud family castle and rebuilt it and it now has literally hundreds of thousands of visitors. So it’s happening everywhere.

I think the other trend is people are looking for authenticity. People are really interested to visit the area, find out what’s going on — in Saudi Arabia, you’ve got rewilding of a million trees, you’ve got green mountains, and I think one of my favorites is Oman, I’ve got to say. It’s just such a wonderful country and Oman goes quite far south, so that when it gets very, very hot in the Middle East, people go to the south of Oman to have the green hills. It is an amazing, very rich area.

Climate impact

CNN: We’ve had unprecedented flooding in the region — we saw that happening in the UAE, specifically Dubai was hard hit, so sustainability is top of mind now. Is it more so than ever before for this region?

Simpson: It is true, we are seeing more big climate events globally — everywhere. So I think it’s really important that when we look at travel and tourism, we understand what our impact is on the climate. No one knew what (the travel sector’s) impact was before, but we’ve (the World Travel and Tourism Council) worked with the Saudis and Oxford Economics and now we know exactly that we contribute, in our sector, 8% to global greenhouse gas emissions. But the interesting thing, now we’ve got the data, is that we know where that’s coming from.

For example, the vast majority of our impact actually comes from ground vehicles. So that’s all our ground vehicles, whether it’s a little van that delivers raspberries to the hotel or the bus that gets you from the airport. So getting electrification globally is really important.

Then, obviously, air travel. And air travel, you’re going to get next-generation planes with much more efficient engines and also the production of sustainable aviation fuel. We are not producing enough of it globally now, but there are now targets to meet. The issue is, airlines aren’t in charge of the fuel they use. They have to buy their fuel. So it’s really important talking to countries to get them to invest in sustainable aviation fuel.

CNN: I want to talk about the impact of conflict in the region and the war in Gaza. What can you tell us about the perceptions of risk?

Simpson: First and foremost, when I talk about something like this, you have to remember it is a real human tragedy, and all our hearts go out to everybody involved in this horrific conflict. In terms of its impact on travel and tourism, the people who are right in the middle are obviously suffering a lot in terms of terms of tourists not wanting to go there. But slightly outside the area, areas are doing very well.

Egypt has some very strong travel and tourism numbers because it’s a big country. It depends where it is geographically. The Gulf has not been affected, as we can see by the numbers, but I think you’re right, there is a general feeling and that can translate into numbers of visitors. But at the moment, outside the area that is directly affected, we are not seeing a big impact on travel and tourism.

Northern Gaza in ‘full-blown famine’, UN food agency chief says

‘It’s horror’: World Food Programme head calls for immediate ceasefire and ‘unfettered access’ into besieged territory.

Northern Gaza is experiencing a “full-blown famine”, the head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has said, and warned that it is “moving its way south”.

In an interview with NBC News set to air on Sunday, Cindy McCain said that her remarks are based on what the WFP has seen and experienced on the ground. UN officials and aid agencies have for months warned of such a scenario.

“What we are asking for and what we continually ask for is a ceasefire and the ability to have unfettered access, to get in safe through the various ports and gate crossings,” she said, according to a video clip of the interview.

On Saturday, a delegation from Palestinian group Hamas was in Egypt to continue negotiations on a ceasefire amid an uptick in international pressure for a deal to be reached.

Hamas’s spokesman Osama Hamdan said there had been “some forward steps”.

Yet Israel has threatened to launch its ground invasion of Rafah in the southernmost tip of the enclave, which is home to more than 1.4 million displaced Palestinians who have fled the Israeli military’s relentless bombardment in other parts of the Gaza Strip.

Israel has severely restricted the entry of critical humanitarian supplies into Gaza despite warnings from its allies and the United Nations of a looming famine in parts of the Palestinian territory. Its military has also repeatedly attacked and killed Palestinian civilians waiting to collect aid in the Strip.

This week it reopened the Beit Hanoon (Erez) crossing into northern Gaza, but Israeli settlers attacked two aid convoys sent by Jordan. The UN has said the amounts remain insufficient to meet the vast and growing needs of Gaza’s starving population.

The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has previously warned that more than 70 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is facing “catastrophic hunger” any time between mid-March and May.

On Saturday, Gaza’s Ministry of Health said at least 34,654 Palestinians have been killed and 77,908 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

Israel-Gaza latest: Israel's 'declared aim of wiping Gaza from the map is about to be realised', World Court told

The UN's top court has today opened a hearing calling for emergency measures to halt Israel's onslaught in Rafah - as Israel said it is "wearing Hamas down" there and has sent more troops in.

That's all for our live coverage for the moment.

Our regular updates will continue tomorrow.

As detailed in our 14.14 post, the UN's top court has today opened a hearing calling for emergency measures to halt Israel's onslaught in Rafah.

As the hearing got under way, judges at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, were told the Palestinian people faced "ongoing annihilation".

South Africa wants the court to impose the emergency measures to protect Rafah, a southern Gaza city where more than a million Palestinians have been sheltering.

It is also asking it to order Israel to allow unimpeded access to Gaza for UN officials, organisations providing humanitarian aid, and journalists and investigators.

It says Israel has so far ignored and violated earlier court orders.

"The key point today is that Israel's declared aim of wiping Gaza from the map is about to be realised," South Africa's legal representative, Vaughan Lowe, told the panel of judges.

"Further, evidence of appalling crimes and atrocities is literally being destroyed and bulldozed, in effect wiping the slate clean for those who've committed these crimes and making a mockery of justice."

Israel, which has denounced South Africa's claim that it is violating the 1949 Genocide Convention as baseless, will respond tomorrow. In previous filings it claimed it had stepped up efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza as the ICJ had ordered.

By Alistair Bunkall, Middle East correspondent

When Yoav Gallant recorded a televised statement criticising Israel’s judicial reforms in March 2023, Benjamin Netanyahu sacked him.

A few days later, after massive street protests, the defence minister was reinstated.

Gallant has again taken to the television to criticise Israel's Prime Minister, this time over the lack of a "day-after plan" for Gaza.

He implied that Netanyahu's indecision was harming the country's security and leading to a de-facto military control of Gaza.

The bad-blood between prime minister and defence minister is no secret, but thrusting it into the open in this way was a dramatic move.

That he remains in office, despite calls from the far right to dismiss him, says as much about the weakness of Netanyahu's hold on power as it does about the logic behind Gallant's intervention.

On Wednesday night, around the same time Gallant was holding his press conference, five Israeli soldiers were killed and seven seriously wounded in a friendly-fire incident in Jabaliya, northern Gaza.

Jabaliya was one of the first areas Israeli forces entered, following 7 October. Four months ago they announced they had dismantled Hamas battalions in the refugee camp, and yet they have been forced to return in large numbers, because Hamas has regrouped and remains a threat there.

That's what insurgencies do, but Netanyahu seemingly failed to foresee it. How often, in wars past, have we seen militant forces fade away in the face of a superior army, only to return later, alive to fight another day.

Procrastinating on a plan for civilian rule of Gaza, as Netanyahu has done for months now, has left a vacuum in much of Gaza and so, surprise, surprise, Hamas has returned to areas that Israel had declared clear.

Israeli forces have also returned, this time with experience of the particular battlefield but increasingly frustrated about the political indecision that has brought them back; battle-hardened, but war-weary.

Lacking a clear strategy, and without a vision for the "day-after", Israeli troops risk being dragged into a war lasting years not months. Maybe that is Netanyahu's plan after all, but his call for "total victory" is a fantasy – militant groups and terror organisations have an annoying habit of regenerating.

What is needed is an alternative to Hamas, another option for governing Gaza. That would put pressure on the group and create a political pathway for Arab states, and the West, to coalesce around.

Gallant knows it and so, reportedly, do senior Israeli security figures. Gallant is trying to force Netanyahu to make a decision, something he famously avoids, but with Israeli soldiers still dying in Gaza it soon won’t just be his defence minister publicly turning against him.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has opened a new hearing today in a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide in the war in Gaza.

South Africa is demanding the United Nations' top court uses emergency measures to press Israel to halt its military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's population has sought shelter.

According to the latest request, the last preliminary orders previously issued by The Hague-based court were not sufficient to address "a brutal military attack on the sole remaining refuge for the people of Gaza."

Israel has portrayed Rafah as the last stronghold of the militant group, brushing off warnings from the United States and other allies that any major operation there would be catastrophic for civilians.

South Africa has asked the court to order Israel to withdraw from Rafah; to take measures to ensure unimpeded access for UN officials, humanitarian organisations and journalists to the Gaza Strip; and to report back within one week on how it is meeting these demands.

The country also says Israel must take all the necessary and effective action to ensure basic food supplies for Palestinians in Gaza.

During hearings earlier this year, Israel strongly denied committing genocidein Gaza and claimed it does all it can to spare civilians and is only targeting Hamas militants.

Most of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have been displaced since fighting began.

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war, without distinguishing between civilians and combatants in its count.

The genocide case was initially brought by South Africa three months into the conflict and says that by killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious mental and bodily harm and creating conditions on life "calculated to bring about their physical destruction", Israel is committing genocide against them.

The hearings this week come after the first round back in January, when the court found it was plausible Israel violated some rights guaranteed to Palestinians in Gaza under the Genocide Convention.

Judges also ordered Israel to take action to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Israel has said it is "wearing Hamas down" as it confirmed more troops will be sent to Rafah.

"This operation will continue as additional forces will enter [the area]," Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said.

"Several tunnels in the area have been destroyed by our troops and additional tunnels will be destroyed soon."

He added: "This activity will intensify – Hamas is not an organisation that can reorganise, it does not have reserve troops, it has no supply stocks and no ability to treat the terrorists that we target.

"The result is that we are wearing Hamas down."

The Israeli military has depicted Rafah - Gaza's southernmost city - as the last Hamas stronghold, brushing off warnings from the US and other allies that any major operation there would be catastrophic for civilians.

Around 600,000 Palestinians have been driven out of the city since the beginning of last week, according to the United Nations.

Egypt has rejected an Israeli proposal for the two countries to re-open the Rafah crossing and manage its future operation, according to two security sources.

The plan was presented by the Israeli security service Shin Bet yesterday and included a mechanism for how to manage the crossing after an Israeli withdrawal, the security sources said.

But Egypt insists the crossing should be managed only by Palestinian authorities.

The Rafah crossing has been pivotal for aid getting into Gaza as well as an exit for medical evacuees.

It has been shut since 7 May after coming under control of the Israeli military.

Egypt and Israel have since blamed each other for the closure of the border and subsequent blockage of humanitarian relief.

Egypt says Rafah's closure is due solely to the Israeli military operation. But a spokesperson for the Israeli government said that Egypt had rejected a separate request to open the crossing to Gazan civilians who wish to flee.

At least 35,272 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the attacks on 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry has said.

It added that a further 79,205 have been wounded.

It is worth noting that the health ministry does not distinguish between civilians and troops in its data.

It is "almost impossible" to distribute aid within Gaza, the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said.

The OCHA added there are "no regular fuel imports, unstable telecommunication and ongoing fighting", which is impacting more than two million people.

German authorities have said they have banned a group that they say showed solidarity with "Palestinian resistance in all forms".

The interior ministry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia accused the Palestine Solidarity Duisburg group of spreading antisemitic narratives and searched four properties in connection to the group.

Herbert Reul, interior minister for the state, said the move "sends the right signal" adding that "in many cases nothing other than hatred for Jews is hidden behind solidarity with Palestine, as in the case of the organisation banned today".

We've been reporting this morning that the US military has successfully anchored a pier to a beach in Gaza, with the aim that it will boost aid getting into the enclave.

Our Middle East correspondent, Alistair Bunkall  says the operation is not yet up and running, but it has the potential to be "very, very effective".

"It will be a complicated system allowing, mainly ships, to deliver aid to Gaza," Bunkall says.

"It will also involve the US military and UN who will deliver it into Gaza itself and the Israeli military who will secure the landing site.

"No US forces went into Gaza this morning, and they are not expected to when the pier is operating, but [the operation] will be able to provide enormous amounts of aid into Gaza.

"The US military think that in the first 48 hours of it operating they will be able to get as much, if not more, aid into Gaza than all the air drops that have taken place so far.

"It could be very, very effective."

Bunkall says there is already one ship of aid that has been waiting to get into Gaza after leaving Cyprus and at least another two ships that are still on route.
