Wow! What a gig, and what a woman!

The talent just flows out of her, and she commands such attention!

I was very happy to be at this gig. I have had my eye on Myrkurs work since the first announcement that she was working on the EP. Once her first full album, 'M', came out I was itching for a chance to see her live. After not quite being able to justify the funds to go see her play at the mausoleum in Copenhagen, i was thrilled when the London giv was announced.

The support bands were announced about a fortnight before the gig, and after a cheeky search on youtube i decided i wasnt perhaps too excited about seeing them, but luckily i found out that i was very wrong about that once i arrived at the gig. Fen in particular were just amazing! Then Myrkur came on stage and did her thing. The music was a little different to the album in places, as she didnt have the backing vocals from the choir she uses on home soil, but the band did a damn good job in their parts, and Myrkur herself was more fantastic than i could have ever hoped for. I was so lucky as to be standing just behind her keyboard for the entire set and the crowd was responding wonderfully to the whole thing so it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience all round.

This was my first ever Black Metal gig, and i loved it! A very different atmosphere to Death Metal gigs! And what a gig to have as my first. :)

To top off an already amazing night, I was very lucky to meet Myrkur after the gig and she was just lovely! Got my photo taken with her, which i will cherish always, and she seemed so down to Earth that it just left me with a real sense of feeling appreciated as a fan rather than there being a divide between myself and her as an artist.

All in all, a perfect gig. I cant wait for her to come back. :)

What a night. Two unique performances.

Support act Jo Quail is a solo cellist who uses an electric cello an real time sampling to prodyce multi-layered compositions that have so many dimensions you have to keep reminding yourself there's only one artist on the stage. A unique experience.

Myrkur is another one off. Folk music and dark metal might not be the most obvious of bed mates but Amalie (Myrkur's creator and main instrumentalist/vocalist) has created a sound that blew me away when I first heard her supporting Epica last year. As soon as I heard she was running a headline tour I knew I had to be there.

She plays two sets. The first is a trip through Nordic folk music with Danish, Norwegian and Swedish songs complemented by a Scottish tragedy and an air from the Polish video game "The Witcher".

Everyone then vanishes from the stage only for Amalie to reappear a few minutes later accompanied by the more "expected" electric guitarists and a drummer for the second set. Gone are the soft traditional folk musings to be replaced by overdriven guitars and pulsating drums. Amalie herself is transformed to a different personality; darker, louder yet still, for the most part, with her stunning pure vocals. Only occasionally does she scream or growl but it all fits and combines to give one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Don't let the "black metal" tag put you off - I think Myrkur is essential listening for folk and metal fans alike.

Massively overrated is an understatement. Easily the least enjoyable band that went on stage. An hour break to drink and socialize would have been better.

Sounds like neutered black-metal-in-name-only music with excessively reverberated sirens' wails laid on top. Occasional tasteless scream.

Feels like a pop record label's attempt at manufacturing extreme metal.

Brilliant performance! A bit unexpected: it was all acoustic. 2 singers, 1 sort-of-lute, 1 sort-of-violin and herself on Piano and tambourine (?).

The repertoire was mostly Scandinavian folk. And oh my god, what a voice she has!!! Magical. This did ring a bell in the far distance of the likes of Loreena McKennith.

Recommended!

Completely blown away by the band's performance. Amalie's voice could switch in moments from hauntingly beautiful to beautifully Haunting. Fuzz is also a spectacular venue for this kind of gig. The Sound was absolute perfection

Incredible gig. Unique and utterly brilliant. Highly recommended. Can't wait to see Myrkur again. Fantastic combination of Scandinavian folk music and black metal. Live show is even better than the recording.

art.tusj’s profile image

Absolutely amazing, I really hope to see her again soon and I hope she has Jo Quail with her again because she was unreal! Ugh one of the best gigs I’ve been to lately and I’ve been to some good gigs!

The most personal of artistic journeys rarely take a predictable path. Over the course of three studio albums, two EPs and a theatrical score under the Myrkur banner, Amalie Bruun has been willing to both pick apart genre conventions and delve deep into the heart of them, remapping her Danish folk roots and black metal onto the most dynamic of internal terrain. Where 2015’s M and 2017’s nightmare-induced Mareridt albums bolstered black metal with emotional currents that were by turns rapt and harrowing, steeped in tradition but enflamed into coruscating acts of deliverance, 2020’s Folkesange found refuge in the durability and archetypal storytelling of Scandic folk, blending songs ancient and new into a tapestry that bound the individual and the universal, once again reaching into elemental forces to invoke something resonant and unbound.

But if there is solace to be found in continuity, Myrkur has often been equally tuned to the forces of upheaval, the ever-shifting nature of Amalie’s music and ongoing dialogue between the two. In art, as in life, there are rubicons to be crossed, new chapters to navigate and sensations to explore, and the act of self-examination that makes sense of it all is, by its nature, also one of reinvention.

If Myrkur’s new album, Spine, starts in recognisably epic, Scandic style, the title of the opening instrumental track, Bålfærd, is Danish for a “Viking funeral’, marking a break with the past as well as the emergence of something new from the flames. Marked by the birth of her child, and a means of making sense of the storm of emotions in that wake, Spine charts a new course for Myrkur through the most turbulent period of her life to new territories beyond, free from genre constraints, and giving rise to a new range of emotional and sonic contours.

Recorded in Iceland’s Sundlaugin studio, which has hosted Sigur Rós, Spine found Myrkur reunited with Mareridt producer Randall Dunn, Spine negotiates the the contrast between the deepest human connection of mother and child, and an increasingly disconnected, alienating world, from pandemic restrictions and isolation to the rise of Artificial Intelligence. But if the claustrophobia of lockdown made an impact on the album, musically it’s Myrkur’s most open yet, Amalie’s pristine clear vocals a hyper-sensitive barometer, finely tuned to states where bliss, anxiety, grief, intimacy and psychic wanderlust co-exist, weaving wide-ranging traces of her musical background into rapt and tantalising new forms. From Like Humans’ blend of lush, airy textures and apprehension-inducing, pounding undertow, where Amalie’s voice floats over the top as if from another dimension, through the twilit pop noir of Mothlike and its sequenced, ABBA-esque groove to the vaulting torch of My Blood Is Gold and monolithic metal riffs launching Blazing Sky’s subterranean trawl and transcendent chorus, the balance of light against the nagging forces of dark have the most spacious and nuanced of arenas in which to play out.

If the track Valkyriernes Sang, sung in Amalie’s native Danish, returns to her connection with Scandic mythology, as with every other element on Spine, its given added weight and room for interpretation by the heartfelt new context it finds itself in, weighing the supernatural power of motherhood with the real need to know what it is to be human, not least in a world contriving to strip our powers away.

Spine is a title with a host of potent connotations: growth, strength, defiance, a core of our being, and flexibility too. It’s what holds a human up, and allows us to rebuild. It’s an album that encompasses all these traits – an act of rebirth that balances our most euphoric and our darkest moments.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 1. Architecture
  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

If you decide to utilize U Visit Russia when you in Moscow ask them to secure Svetlana to be your tour guide, when you in St. Petersburg ask for Victoria to be your tour guide. When I come back to Russia again, i will use U Visit Russia company again 100%. Thanks, D Read more Written February 28, 2020
  • Scott M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Guide, Great Experience Today’s tour of the Kremlin, Dimond Fund and Armoury was absolutely fantastic. My guide Irina was incredibly knowledgeable full of fun facts, humour and a love of her nation it’s history and treasures. She even went out of her way to make sure that I knew the meaning behind a series of Icons in church’s and historical objects in the armoury. 100% recommend this tour. Even if it’s just to skip the 50 line to hope to get tickets at the Kremlins offices. Read more Written January 5, 2020
  • 131natashal 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do NOT purchase from this company!!!!!!! I bought a tour ticket for my daughter on her first visit to Moscow. We were asked to send over her passport information, and they even called us and demanded we send it right away (we were out and wi-fi connection was spotty). We sent it and everything seemed fine. On Thursday we got to the theatre and everyone that worked there told us the tickets were FAKE, they’d never seen anything like these, etc etc. I had to pay the tour fee (2000 rubles) AGAIN to buy ANOTHER TICKET there. Only after the tour had finished did they actually send us the PDF files that they had claimed to send earlier (which they did not). This also happened to TWO OTHER people on the same tour, they received their PDFs from Viator at the end of the tour. Save yourself 4000 rubles and the headache and just buy directly from the Bolshoi Theatre. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read more Written November 28, 2019
