Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena is the perfect start to a day of winetasting. Clos Pegase Winery

1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga

(707) 942-4981

Why Guests Love It: Sleek Architecture, Quirky Sculptures, Cave Tours

Honig Vineyard & Winery

850 Rutherford Rd, Rutherford

(707) 963-4272

Why Guests Love It: Eco Tours, Sustainable Winery, Fabulous Whites

Honig means ‘honey’ in German, which is denoted with the whimsical bees on Honig labels. And, Honig is true to its love of bees by being certified sustainable and solar powered. Book the Eco tour to learn all about Honig’s green practices before tasting through some beautiful wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc.

8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford

(800) 686-6272

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Classic Sparkling Wine, Cheese Pairings

Is it bubbly time yet? Mumm Napa provides the best of French winemaking and Napa views. Guests can choose to taste through the delightful sparkling wines in a variety of settings, from patio seating to terrace tasting with cheese pairings.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Beautiful Views, Exceptional Service

Stags’ Leap is another legendary Napa winery and is a must for those wanting to taste through the best the valley has to offer. Indulge in a porch tasting to experience the stunning views alongside the stunning wines. And, be sure to grab a bottle of Petite Sirah, which is a perennial favorite among critics.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs

1507 Lincoln Ave, Calistoga

We can’t say enough about Calistoga, the often overlooked village at the north end of Napa. It’s quaint, it’s cool, and it’s got an unbeatable vibe. Dr. Wilkinson’s is the epitome of Calistoga. It’s got such a throwback quality that we can’t help but love it. Whether you want a swim in a mineral pool, an indulgent mud bath, or a frolic on a tree swing, Dr. Wilkinson’s has you covered.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

What You’ll See & Do

Climb aboard the original Napa Valley Cable Car Trolley Tour. On this tour you will ride on a San Francisco cable car-style trolley and feel your senses come alive in Napa Valley. Enjoy the warmth of the sun’s rays and the refreshing breeze that blows through the valley. You’ll have the chance to meet other like-minded people on this Napa Valley wine trolley tour. Your guides will keep it fun with their entertaining commentary.

Appreciate the beauty of the natural landscapes; the terraced hills and the never-ending vines. You’ll be treated to the magical aromas of the valley, depending on the season, that may be the sweet tang of freshly harvested grapes or the aroma of Californian sage.

We’ll visit three wineries from our selection of affiliated vineyards, you’ll learn about the growing and winemaking processes as well as trying the finished product. Visit the winery shops and find out more about their other products including olive oil, olives, and even whiskey. Marvel at the Italian and French-inspired architecture of the chateaus and the scenery that surrounds them. At midday, we’ll stop for lunch at one of the selected wineries or urban tasting rooms.

Our Previous Guests’ Experiences

Tripadvisor reviews.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.

The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!

Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.

Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

Mallory Shull

This was my very favorite experience in Napa! The trolley was such a fun way to see more of Napa Valley and truly experience different wineries (and not worry about driving!! :-))

How to Plan an Epic, Wine-Fueled Napa Valley Adventure

From natural hot springs to michelin-rated restaurants and more, we’ve got 13 reasons why you need to make california’s napa valley your next weekend getaway..

California Brandy House

Just a short drive from San Francisco and Sacramento , Napa Valley represents California’s most prestigious wine region, boasting over 30 miles of lush, sloping hills and 16 distinct AVAs, or designated wine-growing regions. With an enviable Mediterranean climate that makes it a worthwhile destination year-round, Napa is renowned for producing exquisite wines —especially cabernet sauvignon—as well as being an early adopter of the farm-to-table movement, with a plethora of Michelin-starred fine dining options. Even amid escalating wildfire seasons, the area continues to demonstrate its commitment to producing noteworthy wines while preserving its stunning landscapes.

Nestled in the valley are a handful of small towns worth exploring, each with its own unique character. On the southern end of Napa County is American Canyon, the most laid back and adventure-oriented, with the American Canyon Wetlands Trail and plenty of bird-watching opportunities. The town of Napa offers a bustling downtown strip situated along the flowing Napa River, with plenty of tasting rooms, restaurants, art galleries, and shops to peruse. Further north lies Yountville, celebrated for its award-winning restaurant scene, as well as Oakville and Rutherford, two tiny towns located in the heart of “Cabernet Country.” Still north is the picturesque hamlet of St. Helena, with big-name wineries and contemporary art galleries along its downtown strip. Finally, you’ll reach the northernmost town of Calistoga, an ideal destination for recharging.

With so much to see, do, drink, and experience, planning a trip to Napa Valley can get overwhelming fast. But not to worry because we’ve done the legwork for you and compiled all of the must-try wineries, restaurants, and things to do across this iconic wine region. Cheers!

Napa Valley Wine Train

Hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train

Take in the history (and plenty of wine) of Napa as you climb aboard this century-old railcar as it chugs down a historic, 150-year-old rail corridor that spans 35 miles between Downtown Napa, St. Helena and back. Originally built to take riders to Calistoga, the train now offers packages that range from The Legacy Experience , a six-hour journey complete with a three-hour rail tour of Napa Valley, four-course wine country-inspired meal, one-hour vineyard tasting and photo opportunities at the Napa Valley Sign, and one-hour tasting at Charles Krug and V. Sattui , to a Gourmet Lunch Express , Murder Mystery , Afternoon Tea , and more.

Relax and recharge in Calistoga

Drink enough wine and you will undoubtedly need to set aside some time to recuperate—not that you’ll need an excuse to pay a visit to one of Calistoga’s natural hot springs or local spas.

Indian Springs Resort is California’s oldest continuously operated mineral pool and spa, first opened in 1861, though it’s enjoyed its share of renovations since then, including the recent installation of a Halotherapy Himalayan Salt Room and new showers with full-spectrum infrared saunas in the mud rooms. Four thermal geysers provide mineral pools and special mud made from volcanic ash, including the Buddha Pond, a meditation pond where spa guests can relax before or after treatments.

Calistoga Spa Hot Springs

Known as Calistoga’s original wellness retreat, Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort and Mineral Springs recently earned a remodel, making its cozy cottages, new spa garden, mud baths, and geothermal mineral pools all the more appealing. “The Works” is the treatment to try, involving a steamy mineral shower to prep, thermotherapy with volcanic ash, hydrotherapy in a private mineral whirlpool, a geothermal steam, a cold blanket wrap, and massage therapy. You might as well book a room—you won’t want to move for a while.

Housed within the art deco Mount View Hotel , True Spa offers massage therapies, aromatherapies, body scrubs and mud wraps, and facials, including a Lemon Matcha Mud Cocoon with a hydrating Lemon Verbena body scrub and a layering of matcha mud before the body is cocooned in a biodegradable wrap to open pores and allow ingredients to penetrate the skin deeply.

And in case you wanted to go on a day spa tripping adventure, there’s also the elegant Spa Solage , Calistoga Spa Hot Springs , Golden Haven Hot Springs , and the Baths at Roman Spa .

The Model Bakery

Try one of Oprah’s favorite things

Once an annual segment on her since-concluded daytime talk show, Oprah Winfrey has since been releasing a list of her favorite things—usually timed with the holiday season—in her monthly O Magazine . With three locations in Yountville, St. Helena, and Napa,  Model Bakery  earned this prestigious designation in 2016 and 2021, with Oprah saying, “I dare you to find a better English muffin than these!” We agree, whether you decide to order it toasted with house-made strawberry jam on the side or as a breakfast sandwich with white cheddar, scrambled eggs, and bacon. As a bonus, Model Bakery now ships their famous English muffins nationwide via Goldbelly .

Sip and cycle through wine country

Just because your vacation is centered around wine doesn’t mean you have to be stationary the entire time. Cyclists can ride on flat easy roads while taking in vineyard views with Getaway Adventures, which hosts a variety of wine country tours across Napa and Sonoma Valley, with multi-day bike tours available. The Calistoga Bike and Wine Tour is an all-day excursion that spans 12 miles and makes stops at wineries like Chateau Montelena , Bennett Lane , Envy , Summers , August Briggs , Frank Family , Twomey , T Vine , and Clos Pegase , among others. A hybrid bike and helmet, unlimited water, and a picnic lunch are included in the tour—tasting fees are an additional cost.

If you prefer to take yourself on a self-guided tour of the valley, there are plenty of bike rental options . Get a taste of the Napa Valley Vine Trail with a 12.5-mile ride that takes you past Napa Valley Museum , St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery , and other popular spots between Napa and Yountville. Still under construction, the walking and biking trail system will span 47 miles between Vallejo and Calistoga when it's completed.

The French Laundry

Take a ride with the Michelin guide

Just as a reminder, the Michelin guide was first developed by the tire company in 1900, as a way of encouraging road travel, and thus, tire sales. More than a century after the first guide was released, it’s now a veritable ranking system of the best restaurants and chefs around the world, with more than a few standouts in the Napa region.

Snag a reservation at legendary The French Laundry if you can, and you’ll be treated to a gastronomic journey that pairs local seasonal ingredients with refined French technique and ends with a box of handmade chocolates. But just in case that doesn’t pan out, try your luck at Thomas Keller’s pared-down Bouchon Bistro or La Toque , another French standout with Michelin cred, plus a lengthy wine list. Intimate, 25-seat Kenzo offers a Japanese kaiseki experience where courses are artfully designed and timed—try to get a seat at the chef’s counter, where you can chat with the chefs and watch as they compose your meal.

With a name that translates to “Inn of the Sun” and a setting among 33 acres of olive groves, you’ll quickly see why Auberge du Soleil ’s Mediterranean-inflected restaurant catapulted Napa’s fine dining scene when it opened four decades ago.

Make a pitstop at Gott’s Roadside

With locations across San Francisco, you may already be familiar with Gott’s Roadside, a no-frills burger stand that champions local ingredients. The popular eatery has wine country locations in St. Helena and at Napa’s Oxbow Public Market ; the perfect option when you need something substantial to soak up that mid-morning wine tasting. You can’t go wrong with any of the burgers, but we especially love the Western Bacon Blue Ring with beer-battered onion rings and Point Reyes crumbled blue cheese, and the Green Chile Cheeseburger with Anaheim green chiles and a charred jalapeno mayo spread. Finish it off with a hand-spun milkshake or Root Beer Float.

Pay a visit to Old Faithful

Okay, so you’re not going to witness the dramatic eruptions that Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Geyser yields, but you can still head down to Calistoga to see spectacular sprays up to 60-feet-tall, happening every 15 to 30 minutes—or more frequently if there’s been recent rainfall. While you’re there, take a stroll through the Old Faithful Gardens, where you can admire native plants and a tranquil mineral water fountain, then visit Old Faithful Animal Farm to pet Tennessee fainting goats, Jacob’s Four-Horn Sheep, and Guard Llamas. You can also learn more about how geysers work at the nearby geology museum.

Book a luxurious stay

There’s no shortage of indulgent resorts fit for living like royalty, all across Napa Valley. Set on a historic working ranch on the southern edge of Napa, Stanly Ranch Auberge Resorts Collection opened in April 2022 with 135 cottages and guest rooms, and a focus on wellness that includes meditative morning walks through the vineyards and bike rides along the Napa River, plus other immersive retreat experiences.

Nearby, Carneros Resort offers cottages and luxury homes equipped with fenced yards and gardens, outdoor showers, and soaking tubs that make you feel like a glamorous local. Complimentary bikes are available for exploring and there are even separate pools for adults and families with kids. Sunday movie nights are hosted on the vineyard lawn, complete with blankets, Adirondack chairs, and complimentary popcorn.

Boutique resort Alila Napa Valley opened in March 2021 in St. Helena, offering 68 guest rooms with features like outdoor fireplaces and views of rolling vineyards. Helmed by Top Chef Masters winner Chris Cosentino, Acacia House is a restaurant housed in a restored Georgian farmhouse that specializes in seasonal fare and features herbs and vegetables from the resort garden. There’s also a convenient footbridge that makes it easy to pop over to neighboring Beringer Vineyards —the oldest continuously operated winery in Napa Valley—for a tasting.

Go glamping in wine country

Maybe you want to balance out your glam Napa stay by roughing it outdoors—or maybe you just want to save a few bucks on accommodations to spend more on wine. Whatever the reason, Napa Valley offers a few scaled-back camping opportunities. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park has 45 campsites for tents and RVs, as well as 10 yurts and restored historic cabins, plus hiking trails and a swimming pool, while Skyline Wilderness Park offers tent, RV, and horse camping.

Napa Valley Balloons, Inc.

Check out vineyard views from a hot air balloon

Napa offers plenty of outdoor adventures from hiking to biking to visiting national landmarks, but nothing compares to a bird’s eye view of the sun rising over the valley from a hot air balloon ride. Make a reservation with Napa Valley Balloons, Inc. or Napa Valley Aloft Balloons , both of which depart from Yountville and offer 45-minute to hour-long balloon rides over the expansive wine region. Napa Valley Aloft Balloons offers an optional post-flight champagne breakfast for $28 per person and Napa Valley Balloons offers a wine package that includes a wine tour in addition to your flight.

Catch a concert or festival

Outside of cheese and charcuterie, you can’t beat a live concert or music festival when it comes to ideal wine pairings. Thankfully, Napa offers plenty of opportunities to take in this art form with a glass in hand.

The annual Festival Napa Valley brings world-class performances to a gorgeous Napa setting, offering ten days of music, food, and wine from July 15 to July 24.

Jazz lovers will want to grab tickets for the Blue Note Jazz Festival , taking place at Charles Krug Winery from July 29–31, with performances by artist-in-residence Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Maxwell, and more, including wine tastings and a VIP experience with the Napa Valley Wine Train, which will be parked at the grounds every day of the festival.

Listen to the classic sounds of Beethoven, Brahms, and other chamber musicians during Music in the Vineyards , an annual festival curated by the Napa Valley Chamber of Music that takes place at various Napa vineyards, estates, and private residences from August 3 to August 21. This year’s programming celebrates women and BIPOC musicians who are traditionally overlooked in the industry.

Get a history lesson with California brandy

No one is arguing Napa Valley as a premiere wine destination, but did you know that it’s also one of the best places to try California brandy? It makes sense—why wouldn’t these award-winning grapes also lend themselves to producing high-end brandies?

As it turns out, California has a history of making brandy that predates the state’s wine industry . You can learn more about the history and try a tasting flight with California brandies at the California Brandy House in Downtown Napa.

Napa or Sonoma: which California wine region offers superior sipping?

Anyone who appreciates fine wine is spoiled for choice in California .

Along its long coast, unique microclimates make for designated wine regions that produce vintages famous worldwide. In-the-know tasters might seek out lesser-visited destinations like Paso Robles near San Luis Obispo , or the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara . But among connoisseurs of California reds, whites and bubblies, two regions stand apart: Napa and Sonoma.

Both an easy drive from  San Francisco , each of these counties has their ardent supporters. Including a pair of expert writers whom we’ve asked to make the case for each.

Next time, make it Napa

Tamara Gane lives within driving distance of Napa and has visited dozens of times for work and pleasure. On each visit, she makes a point to visit a new winery. She only has 400 to go.

Napa rocked the world when a Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay took the top prizes for red and white at the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting (better known as the “Judgment of Paris”). How did Sonoma wineries do? Not one of its wines was even selected to compete. This isn’t to suggest Sonoma County doesn’t have excellent wines; it does. But Napa put California wine on the map – and it’s Napa that continues to blaze a trail for the wine industry today.

Napa has always been a groundbreaker. Three of the five oldest operating wineries in California are located in Napa Valley – and one of them, Charles Krug Winery , opened the state’s first tasting room in 1882. In 1968, Napa became the USA’s first officially designated Agricultural Preserve . Napa Valley was the first American Viticulture Area designated in California in 1981.

Sonoma, it seems, is forever following in Napa’s footsteps – and that’s okay. Someone has to lead.

A man bicycling on a hilly road in Napa, California, USA

Despite its outsize reputation, Napa County is just 35 miles long and 5 miles at its widest point, which means Napa’s wineries – a staggering 475 in total – are easily accessible. Sonoma County, by contrast, is nearly twice as large, and has fewer wineries. While I’m all for a scenic drive, I don’t necessarily want to combine one with wine tasting. (Once, I was lost on a winding Sonoma road without GPS or cell service and had to knock on a stranger’s door for directions – frustrating, to say the least. Although in Sonoma’s defense, the stranger was very nice.)

A common knock on Napa is that it’s too expensive. The valley is indeed saturated with luxury experiences. Yet critics overlook the fact that pricey activities are merely one option for visitors in a position to splurge. The average standard wine tasting fee in Napa Valley is $40 per person – and there are a host of wineries that charge much less. Tastings at Housley Napa Valley and Rombauer Vineyards , for example, will run you $25 per person. Nichelini Family Winery charges $30 per person – then credits the fee toward any wine purchase of $60 or more. And for every $1000-a-night luxury hotel room here, you’ll find dozens of reasonably priced alternatives. In short, Napa is still an approachable destination. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t spend as much time there as I do.

If you are looking to indulge on the high end, make a reservation at one (or many) of the 13 Michelin-rated restaurants in Napa Valley (more than twice as many as you’ll find in much larger Sonoma). For scores of travelers, dining in a restaurant like Kenzo or The French Laundry is a bucket-list experience akin to seeing the Great Wall of China or the Taj Mahal.

Miriam Puentes pours Paula’s Rosé at Honrama Ranch, Napa, California

Luxury winery experiences are no less worthy of your dollars, with 95+-point wines practically springing from the landscape. Well-heeled travelers gladly pay $150–$350 a person for a tasting, before they retire to a suite at Poetry Inn that’s as big as my house. Are these experiences accessible to everyone? Unfortunately, no. But for those who can afford them, they’re simply unforgettable.

Napa has about 11% fewer rainy days than Sonoma, with generally warmer temperatures. Taking advantage of the climate, I like to start my Napa days with a stroll along the Napa Valley Vine Trail or a mud bath in Calistoga . Sunny days mean tastings on the patio at wineries like Bouchane Vineyards or Cliff Lede Vineyards . Maybe it’s just me, but even the most elegant glass of wine feels even more elevated when I’m watching a hawk circling vineyards and undulating hills.

I’ll meet you there next time.

Savor sensational Sonoma

Travel writer  Barbara Noe Kennedy has written about destinations, history, culture, art and more. Her tastiest assignments? Whenever she covers wine country.

When it comes to California’s wine country, Napa’s legendary wines, flashy wineries and trendy restaurants tend to hog the limelight. And don’t get me wrong – the praise is well deserved. But having grown up in the Bay Area and visited both Napa and Sonoma since I was little, I have to say that the latter has always been my favorite. It can go up against Napa any day for its excellent wines. It’s also friendlier, prettier, more diverse – and less expensive.

Let’s go right to those costs. Napa is downright steep: you’ll pay anywhere from $45 up to $200 (!) in Napa for five wine-tasting pours. In Sonoma, a just-as-amazing experience costs $25 to $65 (with a few exceptions, of course). Accommodations are also more reasonable in Sonoma, especially if you stay in a place like Santa Rosa or Petaluma, outside the main hubs. Overall, you should count on spending less.

Three older women hiking in the mountains near Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California, USA

But it’s also about the experience. Sonoma is friendlier and more down-to-earth than Napa, and you don’t need to be a wine expert or a millionaire to feel like you belong. Sonoma’s wineries tend to be smaller and more rustic, offering a more intimate wine-tasting experience; you might even be greeted by the winery owner. That rarely happens in Napa anymore. Part of this is because most of the Napa wineries are more commercial, having shed their family origins – while Sonoma’s wineries remain family affairs. Chuck Wagner, the owner of Caymus , told me that this is the reason he recently moved his family operations out of Napa Valley. He’s fed up with the way things work there these days.

By the way, in Napa, you’re not allowed to bring food onto most winery premises – this is based on some ancient law – whereas in Sonoma, you can. Pack a picnic.

Speaking of food, Napa is constantly lauded for its chi-chi cuisine – yet Sonoma has its own extraordinary dining scene. The tasting menu at SingleThread Farm and Restaurant in Healdsburg easily competes with any of Napa’s most exclusive spots. That said, Sonoma’s restaurants have a more laid-back, unpretentious, farm-to-table vibe – almost all with superb California cuisine.

Sonoma is prettier, too. While Napa is one long, flat valley – which gets very brown in summer – Sonoma comprises varied landscapes of rugged green peaks and tucked-away valleys, sprinkled with small towns. Napa’s one main road (Rte 29) makes wineries a little easier to access, true – but it becomes super congested with cars in summer. In Sonoma, visitors can spread out, exploring hidden corners – and wineries – without the crowds. Some of my favorite niches include Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley.

Kayaks, canoes and other water craft in the Russian River, near Guerneville, Sonoma County, California, USA

The towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma have spots that match Napa’s high-end wine-country aesthetic. (Check out Montage Healdsburg to see what I mean.) Yet Sonoma offers more variety – that again! – which makes things more interesting overall. You also have funky Guerneville, breezy Bodega Bay on the Pacific, bohemian Occidental, sprawling Santa Rosa, apple-blessed Sebastopol and many more towns. And all the while, you’ll be in or near one of Sonoma’s 19 distinct wine regions, where tasting opportunities are always front of mind.

The beyond-wine experiences are simply incomparable in Sonoma, especially for lovers of the outdoors. Here, you can walk along a Pacific beach (the county has 55-plus miles of coastline), eat Dungeness crab at a seafood shack, hike through cloud-shrouded redwoods, bike vineyard-edged roads and stand-up paddle board or kayak on the Russian River. Try doing all that in Napa’s single valley.

So my answer to the perennial “Napa or Sonoma?” question will always be Sonoma – hands-down. It’s has intimate, family-run wineries, and it’s filled with variety, in the wines as well as in the landscapes and local vibes. All for fewer dollars.

What’s not to love?

The famed wine country charity auction shifted back to its original format and raised nearly $5 million for youth mental health

  • MaryAnn Worobiec

The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) trade association held the latest iteration of the Collective Napa Valley Auction Weekend from May 31 to June 1. The evolving series of festive events raised $4.8 million, including a revamped live auction that brought in $2.4 million, and the proceeds will support youth mental health programs in Napa County.

Unlike both the extravagant prepandemic events and modest postpandemic fundraisers, the new auction brought back some of the original luxury while adding intimacy and focus, with a smaller audience and fewer lots. “There was such great energy. People were excited to be back,” said Emma Swain, CEO of St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery .

"We are truly thankful for the generosity of our donors and bidders," said Cyril Chappellet, chair of Napa Valley Vintners and CEO and chairman of Chappellet Winery . “When those who care about Napa Valley come together, wonderful things happen.”

A Star-Studded History

Auction Napa Valley (formerly known as the Napa Valley Wine Auction) was founded in 1981 by a group of local vintners , including Robert and Margrit Mondavi . The annual event included a live auction at Meadowood resort for nearly 40 years, raising more than $200 million for local health and education initiatives during that span.

The auction was iconic for wine lovers; paddles went up for rare and high-priced wines, fantasy vacations, trips on private jets, jewelry and tickets to exclusive experiences at the Kentucky Derby and Super Bowl. Lots typically went for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Michelle and Robin Baggett of Alpha Omega at Auction Napa Valley.

At its peak, the live auction hosted as many as 1,000 guests, and bidding would go on for hours while up to 50 different lots were auctioned. The event was also known for celebrity appearances from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Jay Leno and Katy Perry. The auction raised a record $18.7 million in 2014, topping the $16.9 record the year before.

A Changing Event

The 2020 auction was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Meadowood was severely damaged by wildfires in 2020. Even before those events, there had been discussions among vintners about whether the long format needed freshening up. Other charity wine events modeled on Napa’s had begun to attract increasing attention, particularly the Naples Winter Wine Festival in Florida. In late 2020, the NVV announced the discontinuation of the premier charity wine auction. Fundraising efforts would pivot to a year-round program called Collective Napa Valley, with a series of events both in Napa and elsewhere.

Carlton McCoy, left, Shari and Garen Staglin at Auction Napa Valley.

Now the original format appears to be back, with some modifications. This year’s weekend began with the Napa Valley Barrel Auction, which took place at Hall Wines Friday. More than 1,600 guests sampled wines from 80 wineries and dishes from local restaurants. Wine lovers had the opportunity to bid on 10-case lots of unique wines from recent vintages, including offerings from Shafer , Cardinale , Alpha Omega , Robert Mondavi Winery , Chimney Rock and Salvestrin , among others.

Smaller Crowd, Big Lots

The main event—the live auction still known as Auction Napa Valley—took place Saturday, June 1, at Far Niente Winery . Nearly 400 guests (less than half of attendees in years past, and limited media) started with dinner prepared by chef Philip Tessier from Press , a Wine Spectator Grand Award–winning restaurant. Vintners walked around the tables pouring wines for guests.

With only 14 lots rather than the typical 50 from past years, the auction raised more than $2.4 million. While there were fewer lots, they were reminiscent of the extravagance of earlier years—trips to destinations around the world, private chef dinners, rare vintages of special wines. Jeff Smith and Carolyn Duryea of Hourglass winery were the honorary chairs, and Sotheby’s Meaghan Steele and Vanessa Conlin led the high-spirited bidding.

Teen beneficiaries at Auction Napa Valley.

A winning bid for $180,000 included three gold-and-diamond Chanel Coco Crush bracelets and 45 bottles of wine from St. Supéry ( Chanel is the parent company of the winery ). Hall Wines consigned a lot, offering 14 luxurious days at sea on "The World, Residences at Sea", a privately-owned, residential mega yacht paired with a 6-liter bottle of wine. It sold for $230,000. (NVV did not provide a complete list of lots and sale prices.)

Next year’s auction weekend is scheduled for June 6–7. Alpha Omega owners Michelle and Robin Baggett will serve as honorary chairs. The more focused approach appears to be the future of the auction. “Our desire is to keep the format intimate in size,” said Teresa Wall of NVV. “The energy and excitement is much the same, but the evening is more of a true Napa Valley experience—a blend of sophistication and laid-back elegance.” Charity events are still expected throughout the year locally and nationwide.

But, for now, there’s a sense that the auction is back. “It’s still the event to be at for great wine and a good time,” explains St. Supéry’s Swain.

Namaste, wine lovers: Destinations where yoga and wine pair perfectly

Jean Chen Smith

June 10, 2024 // By Jean Chen Smith

By Jean Chen Smith June 10, 2024

Namaste your way to bliss at Camp Lucy in Texas wine country

As a pilates and yoga studio owner, I've attended my fair share of wellness retreats, but yoga and wine experiences are by far my favorite. Both activities require being in the moment and tuning into your senses. During yoga, you pay attention to your body and movement, while at a wine tasting, you focus on the olfaction and taste sensories.

Whether you're into yoga or wine, and possibly both, we've rounded up our favorite destinations for yoga and wine, along with some options where you can create your take on the experience.

Says Casi Masciorini, co-owner of Namaste Vineyards in Dallas, Oregon: "The benefits of wine and yoga bring a certain internal and external peace. People come as individuals and leave as friends."

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, Calistoga, California

Relax on the grounds of Four Seasons Napa Valley

The Four Seasons in Napa Valley offers a luxury yoga and wine retreat in the bucolic region of Napa Valley's prestigious wine country. The luxury property spans 22 acres and has a working winery on the grounds. Accommodations feature an elegant yet modern farmhouse aesthetic, with artwork and design paying homage to wine country.

Guests are invited to complimentary yoga classes every Saturday on the spa terrace, overlooking the spectacular vineyards. Afterward, book a tasting at the on-site Elusa Winery , which specializes in cabernet sauvignon grapes through a collaboration with world-renowned winemaker and local resident Thomas Rivers Brown.

To round out your wellness experience, book a service at the resort's Spa Talisa for some rest and relaxation. The spacious spa features a steam room, sauna, pool, hot tub, and outdoor sanctuary.

The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection, Los Olivos, California

Pair yoga and wine in Santa Barbara wine country

Los Olivos, an idyllic town in Santa Barbara County's wine country, is popular for its culinary scene and quaint shops. It's also home to The Inn at Mattei's Tavern , an Auberge property that was once a stagecoach stop in the late 1800s. The historic landmark now offers various accommodations, from cottages to the main guesthouse, all with contemporary farmhouse design.

Guests staying on the property have access to complimentary daily yoga on the Hartley Lawn, surrounded by the beauty of the Santa Ynez Mountains as the backdrop (weather permitting). The property offers several wine country packages, but our favorite is the Girls Gone Wine tour, which introduces you to three highly acclaimed female winemakers as you enjoy a curated tasting.

Carmel Valley Ranch, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, Carmel, California

Practice at Carmel Valley Ranch's yoga platform

Escape to this stunning ranch for a rejuvenating yoga and wine retreat. Spanning 500 acres, Carmel Valley Ranch is a luxurious resort in California's central coast wine country with a grand spa and a Pete Dye golf course. Guests can take hilltop yoga overlooking the Santa Lucia Mountains, which starts with a short (somewhat challenging) hike from the lodge to the outdoor yoga platform, where you'll be rewarded with stunning views as you practice.

Classes are 90 minutes long and open to all levels. Because space is limited, guests are encouraged to make reservations. With over 20 wineries in Carmel, there's no shortage of tasting rooms to visit after.

Knudsen Vineyards, Dundee, Oregon

Gather for yoga and wine in Oregon's wine country

Head to the Willamette Valley for a wine and yoga escape. Imagine gazing over the vineyards for a morning of yoga and wine in the heart of Oregon's wine country. Knudsen Vineyards , established in 1971, spans across 228 acres and specializes in pinot noir and chardonnay. On two Sundays a month, Knudsen hosts a 50-minute yoga class on a covered outdoor terrace. As an instructor leads you through a series of poses, breathtaking views are your drishti, or point of focus.

Registration and prepayment are required. After your practice, you will enjoy a relaxed brunch and a flight of three wines. The event takes place from June through late September, weather permitting.

Although the winery doesn't offer lodging, The Dundee is nearby. This chic boutique property features spacious guest rooms, on-site tasting rooms, and friendly service.

Indian Creek Winery, Kuna, Idaho

Experience yoga and wine in the outdoors

Located in the Snake River Valley AVA region of Idaho, a terroir unique because of its high desert climate, Indian Creek Winery offers guests a relaxing afternoon of wine and yoga from May through late September. All levels are welcome to attend the 60-minute mindful movement class on the huge lawn.

Afterward, sip some wine and have a picnic on the grounds. Bring your own snacks or enjoy grab-and-go bites from vendors and food trucks. Preregistration is required.

The area is full of things to do for both families and couples. You'll find several golf courses, the largest waterpark in the Northwest (Roaring Springs in nearby Boise), and tons of shopping.

Four Seasons Hotel Austin, Austin, Texas

Combine yoga and wine in Texas Hill Country

The Four Seasons Hotel Austin collaborates with Vino Vinyasa to host a yoga and wine experience. One Saturday a month, the all-level vinyasa class is followed by a wine tasting on the hotel's spacious lawn overlooking Lady Bird Lake. Participants receive 10% off a brunch entree at Ciclo , the hotel's restaurant serving delicious plates of modern American cuisine. Prepayment and registration are required.

The hotel also offers a popular wellness series , including yoga, sound healing, and meditation classes. The Suite Experiences package provides a private restorative yoga session in one of its spacious Lake-view suites or outside on the great lawn. After class, Live Oak, the hotel's bar and lounge, is a great relaxing spot with an extensive wine list and delicious small plates.

Camp Lucy, Dripping Springs, Texas

Find your flow at Camp Lucy's immersive experience

Set in picturesque Dripping Springs in the Texas Hill Country, Camp Lucy covers 282 sprawling acres. This resort offers plush accommodations featuring comfy sitting areas, spacious bathrooms with tubs, and expansive views of the vineyards. There are plenty of activities for adults and children, but yoga and meditation classes are some of the most popular. These customized classes must be reserved in advance.

Afterward, stroll through the beautiful on-site vineyard and enjoy the views, or visit their walk-in wine cellar and enjoy a glass of wine. For a more in-depth experience, register for a wine-tasting class to learn about grapes and the harvesting process. Each year, the resort hosts its annual grape harvest in the summer, which draws plenty of visitors.

Sky Rock Sedona, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Sedona, Arizona

Do your vinyasa among sweeping vistas at Sky Rock Sedona

Nestled along the foothills of Arizona's towering red rocks is Sky Rock Sedona .

Daily yoga classes overlook the scenic red rocks and are appropriate for all levels, whether seasoned yogis or novices. Afterward, head to Bar Woowoo in the hotel lobby, which features a good selection of wines. Settle into a comfy lounge chair and enjoy the vino and views.

For a more extensive experience, you can book a wine tasting and tour with Sedona Wine and Vortex Tours . End the day with fine dining at the beautiful Mariposa restaurant , led by award-winning chef and restaurateur Lisa Dahl.

Drunk Yoga at Moxy Times Square, New York, New York

Escape from the bustling city with rooftop yoga in NYC

You don't need to be in wine country to enjoy a wine and yoga retreat. Drunk Yoga at the Moxy takes place at Magic Hour, New York City's largest indoor/outdoor hotel rooftop at the Moxy Times Square hotel. On Saturdays, yogis and yoginis gather to move through vinyasas and socialize. The fun event includes 90 minutes of yoga, two glasses of wine, and 10% off your brunch bill. Prepayment and registration are requested.

Magic Hour offers a formidable brunch, including a Pink AF Pancake Stack covered in hot-pink cotton candy. If you're a fan of savory versus sweet, you'll want to order their bucket of crispy chicken wings with all the sauce offerings.

Linville Falls Winery, Newland, North Carolina

Head to Linville Falls Winery in North Carolina for vino and vinyasa

Linville Falls , a family-owned and -operated vineyard and winery nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offers weekend yoga throughout the summer. Classes typically occur on the lawn surrounded by the mountains and vineyards but are held inside the Red Barn in inclement weather.

Named for historic Linville Falls, the winery is famous for sweet and dry wines, including the signature riesling and cabernet sauvignon. In addition to wine and yoga, the property offers various other events, including live music, paint-and-sip classes, and a rotation of food trucks.

Is rogue valley the napa of oregon.

Located halfway between San Francisco and Portland, the Rogue Valley has quietly grown into a bona ... [+] fide wine destination.

Ah, state mottos. At their best, they showcase a state’s character. At their worst, they confuse (a personal favorite is Texas’ simple slogan of “Friendship”). The state motto of Oregon, alis volat propriis , or roughly “she flies by her own wings,” is arguably one of the most apt.

Placed in the context of Oregon, the phrase holds multiple meanings. In 1854, when the motto was first adopted, it was mainly in reference to early efforts by Oregon settlers to form a provisional government separate from the United States. After being superseded by the motto “The Union” for a time, alis volat propriis was readopted in 1987 in celebration of the independent spirit of Oregonians.

Rolling from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean, the Rogue River is renowned not only for its ... [+] beauty but also its recreation.

Today, the motto still refers to the state’s reputation for individualism, but as burgeoning industries in organic agriculture, ocean resources and winemaking find success, “she flies by her own wings” also highlights just how indebted Oregon is to its remarkable landscape. Oregon flies because its land gives it wings.

In the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon, this sentiment rings especially true. Covering the corridor between the peaks of the Cascade Range and the Siskiyou Mountains near the Oregon/California border, Rogue Valley’s distinct positioning bears exceptional fruit—quite literally.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The Southern Oregon region's Mediterranean climate has made it an ideal landscape for growing over ... [+] 50 wine varietals.

Thanks to a rain shadow effect caused by the surrounding mountains, the valley has a relatively temperate climate that some have even deemed Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. As a result, the region is granted an extended growing season to the benefit of its variety of fruits, nuts and herbs. Grapes, in particular, reap the rewards.

Since the establishment of the Rogue Valley as an American Viticultural Area vineyards have rapidly bloomed across the region, reaching upwards of 180 total. Over 50 grape varietals are grown throughout the valley, including warm-climate varieties such as merlot, cabernet sauvignon and tempranillo. Colder-climate varietals are also found, though mostly on select elevated slopes in western Rogue Valley. Wine tasting has become a staple of the region and a major draw for visitors from all over the world.

Exceptional vineyard listing are located across the valley, with rare properties outfitted with ... [+] tasting rooms, like the 1,885-square-foot space at Red Lily Vineyard.

For those looking to grow their relationship with wine beyond tasting and enter the world of viticulture, opportunities to own a vineyard arrive on the market. In exceptional cases, some vineyard properties are already outfitted with fermentation facilities, barrel and case storage and wine-tasting rooms in addition to their residential estates.

Listings with this combination of a homestead alongside either hobby or commercial amenities have pushed the luxury market in the Rogue Valley to new heights, says Kendra Ratcliff of LUXE , a boutique brokerage based out of Lake Oswego. “The higher-end real estate market here is very much driven by lifestyle, meaning an additional utility from the property beyond a place to call home, but one that’s also not a commercial or business-first endeavor.”

Listed for $8.5 million, Red Lily Vineyards is a terroir-driven, small cuvee winery that sits in ... [+] Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley, the only sub-AVA of the Rogue Valley AVA.

In addition to vineyards, lifestyle properties can include hobby farms, small ranches and artisan workshops, adds Ratcliff, who in partnership with Chris Martin of Land Leader, holds multiple listings in Rogue Valley under this category, including Red Lily Vineyards , Shining Hand Ranch and Casa de la Nueva Vida .

Of course, the appeal of Rogue Valley depends on the Rogue River. Flowing 215 miles from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean, the Rogue River is renowned not only for its beauty but also its recreation including white-water rafting, as well as salmon and steelhead fishing. Drainages of the river and its tributaries stretch out like capillaries over the body of the landscape providing many homes with rolling water views.

Designed by the visionary duo of Nisha Jackson and Michael Woods, Casa de la Nueva Vida is listed ... [+] for $9.98 million.

It's no surprise the region has been home to civilizations for over 8,500 years. Yet it remains surprisingly unburdened by human sprawl, with grand expanses of forestry standing between the various towns that dot the map of the Rogue Valley.

The three largest communities in the area, which encompasses parts of Jackson and Josephine County, are Medford, Ashland and Grants Pass. Combined, the population of the three towns nods towards 150,000. That’s not to say the Rogue Valley is devoid of culture.

Located on the northern end of Ashland, the 700-acre Shining Hand Ranch is listed for $5.89 million. ... [+]

Ashland stands out for its arts scene, defined by a handful of galleries, the famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival and events staged by Southern Oregon University, whose campus sits at the center of town. Lithia Park, a 93-acre greenery in the heart of Ashland, hosts miles of hiking trails, ponds and picnic areas, as well as an ice skating rink, two bandstands and tennis courts.

Just west of Medford, the town of Jacksonville has emerged as something of a destination in its own right, thanks to its historic district which received National Historic Landmark status in 1966. Jacksonville is also known for the Britt Festiva l , a seasonal music festival housed in an open-air amphitheater.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland is approaching its 90th season.

All that said, Rogue Valley is still best known for its natural wonders. Like much of Oregon, camping and hiking are synonymous with the region. Panoramic views at the apex of popular trails like the Upper Table Rock Trail or Lower Table Rock are well worth the effort. To the north, Crater Lake National Park—the only national park in the state— centers around its eponymous body of water. Forged out of the caldera of an inactive volcano, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country.

While the valley’s landscape has attracted many visitors, Ratcliff says that its diversified real estate market and distinct location have increasingly garnered attention from buyers, many of whom come from out of state. “Rogue Valley has become a desirable destination because of its proximity to the San Francisco Bay area, Portland and Seattle. And the demand has caused a surge in housing options. In recent years we’ve seen a number of people relocate here from places like Montana, Texas and Florida.”

Sitting in the caldera of an inactive volcano, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country.

Ratcliff anticipates that in the near future, the Valley’s location on Interstate 5, the relatively reasonable property values and the recent expansions in the urban growth boundaries will open the door to the technology-centric industry wanting to call Southern Oregon home. As a result, significant housing demand is expected to continue across all property types.
