Naypyidaw, a strange capital

Naypyidaw, a strange capital

Surely you have heard a lot about the former capital of Myanmar which was Yangon, but what about the new capital named Naypyidaw? Let's explore it together in this article!

Overview of Naypyidaw

Naypyidaw (or Nay Pyi Taw) is the most mysterious capital in the world. While Yangon has thousand years of age, Nay Pyi Taw can be considered very young, was just born in late 2005. The name Nay Pyi Tawy means the “Royal city” or “Residence of Kings” was announced in 2006 when the role as the capital of Yangon was officially transferred to Nay Pyi Taw. The city was built in the small village of Kyatpyae, about 10km from Pyinmana town.

Nay Pyi Taw is not famous as a main Myanmar tourist attraction. But if you do not like the crowded, noisy, narrow and full of dust generated by the traffic and like to explore the wilderness, the Naypyidaw capital is the most accurate choice. Quiet large roads, little traffic, massive towering pagoda system of religion city, the friendly and open people are the special features of this city and a day tour here will offers you fun things to experience.

The Naypyidaw International Airport (or Ayelar Airport) helps you to visit this destination conveniently.

Attractions in Naypyidaw

Water Fountain Garden is one of the main attractions to visit Naypyidaw. This garden is 67ha large and locates near the Naypyidaw City Hall and National Herbal Park. This is the space of full of flowers, trees, and plants. In a steel structure arch-way but the garden is so charming with a main pond with three fountains and 11 small ponds with 13 dazzling water fountains, 9.1m high clock tower, not to mention recreation centers, other smaller gardens, and very green footpaths. The best time to admire the beauty here is in the evening when the water emerges in the colorful lights.

Uppatasanti Pagoda - also known as the name “Peace Pagoda” - is the outstanding landmark in the capital and in all must-visited list in the day tour.

Being built in 2006, thanks to its unique architecture this massive building has earned many good reputations. It has the similar shape and size to the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon with the height of 99m (just 30cm shorter than the legendary one in Yangon). The pillar base of the pagoda is so gigantic that is comparable to a hill and is completely man-made built.

There is the relics of Buddha's teeth from China is preserved here.

In the pagoda precinct, there are image of Buddha Maha Hsutaungpyae, 4 jade Buddha painting in the empty caves, garden with 108 Sri Maha Bodhi, 4 jade Buddha paintings in the hollow caves of the temple, a 33m-high flagpole, even museum, hotel and many other works in the huge pagoda complex.

The pagoda has become the dignified symbol of the Nay Pyi Taw capital city.

Naypyidaw , also spelled Nay Pyi Taw , officially replaced Yangon as the capital of Myanmar in 2005. It is officially known by the acronym NPT.

Understand [ edit ]

Naypyidaw is unique and a little bizarre. It's a large and fully laid out city but with insufficient inhabitants and buildings for its size, so you can experience the unprecedented Asian scenario of never getting stuck in traffic. Whether this weird situation will remain when Myanmar's economy begins to boom is another matter since the lack of gridlock is certainly not down to superb road planning and cutting edge traffic control. What helps are the eight-lane boulevards and Parisian-sized roundabouts.

Naypyidaw was a rather secretive construction project by the ruling military junta in the early 2000s and, in November 2005, was suddenly proclaimed Myanmar's new capital. Government workers were given two months notice that they would have to move from Yangon with the re-location of all government offices and ministries. Most embassies and international organisations, like the UN, have not relocated since educational and health infrastructure is not yet in place.

Map

By car [ edit ]

The tolled Yangon–Mandalay Expressway connects Yangon to NPT. It's 320 km (200 mi) long with a service complex containing a fuel station and a large, expensive (by local standards) restaurant just past the halfway point if you're coming from Yangon.

By rail [ edit ]

There are several trains daily from Yangon and they take around nine hours. The station is considerably further from the city centre and from the hotels than the bus station, and the bus journey from Yangon is considerably faster (5 hr).

By plane [ edit ]

To handle increased traffic to the capital, the existing airport at Ela was upgraded to handle larger planes. It lies 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Kyatpyae.

Bangkok Airways flies directly from Bangkok each evening enabling connections to/from major international cities. The plane from Bangkok is an ATR turbo prop, not usually a jet, so it can get rather full and bags can get delayed. Bangkok Airways code shares with other airlines, like Emirates. However, Bangkok Airways does not always honour Emirates frequent flyer benefits (such as extra luggage allowances).

In reality, mainly foreign visitors (usually international development workers) or rich locals fly to Naypyidaw while locals travel by bus (5 hr).

The airport is modern, clean and efficient. It's also mostly empty of people with most of the gates not in use.

By bus [ edit ]

nay pyi taw safari park

From Yangon buses travel the wide new toll highway for about five hours, including mandatory rest stop, to the capital, which unusually just springs out of nowhere at a nondescript intersection. The bus should eventually arrive at the Myoma Bus Station in the north of the city.

  • From Yangon - 6300 kyat, 5 hr (Feb 2017)
  • From Bago - 8,000 kyat, 8 hr

Get around [ edit ]

By motorbike taxi [ edit ].

This is a common form of transport in Naypyidaw, but it can be risky.

By tuk-tuk [ edit ]

Similar to those in Bangkok although called a "thaw lar gyi" in Myanmar.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxi drivers hang around the shopping centres and bus station and you need to negotiate with them. For foreigners the asking costs can be high at US$5 for even relatively short journeys. Distances between locations are large so finding a taxi needs some effort (best to ask the hotel to help).

An example fare from Feb 2017: 7000 kyat for a 20-minute journey from the Golden Lake Hotel to the Myoma Bus Station. Arranged in advance at the hotel.

  • 19.89915 96.255809 1 Defence Services Museum , Zeyathiri Township . An enormous half open-air, half housed complex celebrating the country's military. For a country with so many pressing needs you may find this multi-million dollar vanity project hard to stomach, but it's free, and anyone interested in military hardware and history will easily be occupied for some hours. It's a very long walk to see everything. If possible, hire a scooter from your hotel, register at the office 300 m beyond the entrance gates (bring passport) and then park at each of the three main buildings. Otherwise, brace for a walk of several kilometres, at least most of which are under covered walkways. It's wheelchair-friendly, for paralympians. Looking from the main road, the area on the left is Navy, straight ahead is Army and History, to the right is Air Force. There are few signposts in English. The Air Force has planes outside including a moth-eaten Spitifire. The Navy has scale models of ships outside. The three main buildings serve to eulogize the top brass and national heroes. The buildings behind/beside contain the detail, including military kit, 3D dioramas of varying quality, and engaging battle paintings. Most commentary is in Burmese but the key material is also in English. Free . ( updated Feb 2017 )
  • 19.743894 96.11582 2 Gems Museum .
  • King Statues . Three enormous sculptures depicting the three most important kings in Burmese history: Anawrahta, Bayinnaung and Alaungpaya U Aung Zeya.

Do [ edit ]

  • City Park ( Behind the city hall ). Park with a playground and water fountain complex, which hosts a musical light show every night.
  • Golf . Naypyidaw has four golf courses, Nay Pyi Taw City Golf Course, Yaypyar Golf Course, Yan Aung Myin Golf Course and Royal Myanmar Golf Course.
  • Ngalaik Lake Gardens ( ~10 km from Naypyidaw ). A small water park along Ngalaik Dam, near Kyweshin Village on Ngalaik Lake. Has water slides, resorts, lodgings and a beach.

Buy [ edit ]

Naypyitaw Myoma Market is the commercial centre of Naypyidaw. Other shopping areas include Thapye Chaung Market and Junction Centre Naypyidaw. In the "hotel zone" are two medium-sized shopping malls: Junction and Capital, each of which have reasonable supermarkets and restaurants. Junction also has a cinema. There's another shopping mall complex further north with a much larger supermarket and an exchange bureau. You can change money (only US dollars, not euros) at the travel agent in the Junction Centre but they sometimes run out of cash. Phone charge scratchcards are available in the Junction Centre. Foreign credit or debit cards are sometimes accepted in shops, however there are plenty of ATMs.

Drink [ edit ]

Myanmar beer is very drinkable and there are several different types. Locally produced whisky is very cheap, 5,000 kyat a litre, even for the best local brands. Wine is also available including local red and white wine. International wines are available, usually around 8,500-15,000 kyat. The Junction and Capital supermarkets have sections selling wine, beer and whisky.

Sleep [ edit ]

The hotel zone has a handful of villa-style hotels that dot the hills on the outskirts of the city. There are 12 hotels in or near Naypyidaw. Eight of these are within the Naypyidaw Hotel Zone. There are also some very large hotels in Naypyidaw. The distances are quite far between anywhere you want to go and the hotels.

15 things to see in the strange city of Nay Pyi Taw

Nay Pyi Taw is the capital of Myanmar and unlike most of the places in this full of history country it is brand new - the construction began 2002 and in 2006 it officially became the capital. Everything in it is planned and charted - zones for hotels, restaurants, residential areas, shopping complexes, schools, etc, but not yet fully completed, with a lot of the people working in Nay Pyi Taw still living in the old capital Yangon and this makes the city feeling like a ghost town with huge empty highways and streets and houses no one lives in.

Some of the buildings in the city are ready and in use, but some are still empty, awaiting for people to come and move in, new ones are being built and part of the place is just at the idea stage. We found it funny that even the public transport is already planned, but not functional yet - bus stops are everywhere, but no actual buses running. The lack of services is one of the main reasons that most of the people working in Nay Pyi Taw live in Yangon and commute weekly.

Bus Stop

Interesting fact is that the new capital came as a surprise for most of the country. It had been planned and built in secrecy and after the reveal the government and the administration were given just a few months to move from the old capital - Yangon.

As I mentioned, the city is divided in zones - zones for everything, hotels, shopping, housing. Employees working in different parts of the administration are placed in different residential zones that are even color coded - Ministry of health are in their own apartments with blue roofs, Ministry of Agriculture employees have green roofs, mansions for the high ranking officials. The military higher ups have their own zone, separate from the others, consisting of tunnels and bunkers. How it works if someone needs to change their job I don't know - probably have to move to a new apartment too.

Residential buildings

We arrived in Nay Pyi Taw by train from Malwamyine a little after 10 pm, after a 16 hour long train ride. Our hotel was in one of the hotel zones and looking at google maps the main train station was a little farther from the hotel than the one before it - Pyinmana, so we decided to get off there. It is a local station, but there were several taxis waiting outside and we quickly negotiated a reasonable price for a trip to our hotel.

The drive first took us through the town of Pyinmana, one of the towns that existed before the start of the construction of the new capital - it was full of life and little restaurants, narrow streets and dusty houses. We exited Pyinmana and navigated through wide empty roads to get to the hotel zone. So many hotels - big and small, with brightly lit lobbies and big neon signs, we wondered if there are enough visitors to fill all of them. We were the only car on the six lane road going through the hotel zone, and at some point we realized that despite all the lights, there were no cars in front of the hotels and all the guest rooms were completely dark. It was a surreal feeling being on the empty streets with the empty lighted up buildings around and one we would experience many times in this strange city.

lobby and restaurants are lit up, but not a single guest

Our hotel was one of the smaller ones, a bit of an unusual design with a lobby in a building next to the entrance and a main building about 200 meters inside a small park. The staff drove us, with all of our luggage, in a golf cart.

Nay Pyi Taw has a population of just under a million, but it is a huge city area-wise, the attractions are scattered around and with dedicated hotel zones, your hotel is close to other hotels only. To do sightseeing walking is just not an option. Cycling can be done, if one is in good shape, but it will take a lot of time and stamina. The two best ways to see the capital is to get a car with a driver (without a Myanmar drivers license one cannot drive and rent cars in the country) or to rent a motorcycle.

Renting a motorcycle in Nay Pyi Taw is not as easy as in other tourist spots in Myanmar. Our online research only yielded one hotel that offers bikes - The Golden Lake hotel - and we booked it to make sure we can go around the city on our own. From what I can tell they had only two bikes to rent and they were 30000 kyats for the day, a lot more than the usual 8-10k elsewhere - still, we were happy to get one. All in all we had 2 full days in Nay Pyi Taw, each day going for a little over 100 km around the city.

Defense Services Museum

We started our first day with a 40 km trip to the Defense Services museum. The museum grounds consist of around 15 separate buildings, four outdoor displays featuring real tanks, planes and water vessels, enormous water fountain, statues of the three greatest monarchs - King Anawrahta, Bayinnaung and Alaungpaya - all enclosed in a square with a side 1.5 km long. The place is huge, they let you go in on your bike, it is not possible to walk it.

Defense Services Museum

At the gate we put our names in the big notepad, left one of the passports and got a pass. Then we went in - the road that leads into the museum and goes around the whole thing is actually a small highway - two lanes in each direction with a green strip in the middle.

Defense services museum

The outdoor displays are in three corners of the square that is the museum grounds - north-west is planes and helicopters, north-east sea vessels, south-east has ground military machines and south-west is still empty. Of course, to have a look you go on your motorcycle. There are around 30 planes, including some passenger ones and several fighter jets, some 30-40 boats, some in their own pools, and a lot of military ground vehicles - including a tank.

Defense Services Museum

The buildings with the indoor displays are all linked with covered walkways, but it is easier to drive around. From what we can see not all rooms are filled, but there is still a lot of stuff to see. We entered two or three and realized there is a limit of how much military history and equipment we want to see in a day, so just drove past the other ones.

Defense Services Museum

At the entrance of every building we went into we had to put our names in a handwritten list. Going in we had at least one person assigned to escort us around the place, not as a guide mind you, they did not speak English, but just walk with us. Most seemed like military personnel and many were actually wearing uniforms. Felt a bit weird, but people were very nice and we didn't really mind.

Next to the museum is Zayar Thiri Sports complex - the road leading in was closed, looking from afar it looked like big empty stadiums, probably an interesting sight up close.

20 lane highway and Parliament building

After the visit to the museum we took to the highway again to go and see an even bigger highway - the twenty lane highway that runs in front of the Parliament building. Now, every time I am stuck in a traffic jam at home I will be dreaming of this impressive and empty road - twenty lanes and not a single car. It looks more like a giant square than a road.

20 lane highway

The Parliament itself is also impressive, but unfortunately not open for visitor so only a glimpse through the fence is allowed.

Junction Centre and Capital City

There are two malls in Nay Pyi Taw - Junction Center and Capital City, both have supermarkets, the only real supermarkets we've seen in Myanmar, some shops and some fast food places. Junction Center is the slightly bigger and more popular and Capital City has a cinema.

Capital city mall in Nay Pyi Taw

Naypyidaw Water Fountain Garden

We finished the day in the Naypyidaw Water Fountain Garden - best time to visit is in the evening as there is a water, lights and music show at the lake. It is really nice and the music is surprisingly modern, even including some hard rock pieces, very well synchronized with the fountain too. The whole park is buzzing with life during that time as it is a favorite spot for an evening walk for the locals.

Naypyidaw water fountain garden

There is a pool, built like a natural cave - it is open during the day, but looked a bit dirty.

Myoma market

We started our second day in Nay Pyi Taw with a visit to Myoma market - it is the busiest market in town and if you are taking a bus out this is where it will depart from. To be honest, it is not a really big market, and not so interesting for tourists - there is a small fresh meat section and some fruit and veggies stalls, a lot of used fridges and other white goods on sale, clothes and sewing services. No souvenirs, but this is not unusual in Myanmar. Several cafes/tea shops are good for breakfast and lunch.

Myoma market

National Herbal Park

This is a big park that can be visited on a motorcycle, the herbal gardens are filled with different plants and it is a nice walk to see them. However, they are not in best shape and there are not many signs in English.

National Herbal Park

Uppatasanti Pagoda

Probably the main attraction to see in Nay Pyi Taw, this pagoda is a replica of  Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, made a few centimeters smaller as to not overshadow the original. It is best visited in the morning or at sunset, if it is sunny during the day the steps and the terrace around it get very hot and very unpleasant to walk barefoot (as is required in Myanmar temples).

Uppatasanti Pagoda

The pagoda itself is very beautiful and being on a (manmade) hill it gives a nice view of the city. Inside are four jade Buddha images and the walls are painted with religious scenes. Next to the temple there is the Bo tree garden Maha Bo Tree and 28 Buddha images.

Drive around the city

We decided to spend half of our second day just driving around and soaking up the atmosphere of the somewhat empty city instead of going to one of the other attractions. We enjoyed riding on the empty highways through the different neighborhoods.

Deciding where to go was not so easy, we knew we wanted to see more of the city, but some parts of it are still just empty fields, not really exciting. So, we looked at Google maps, both maps and satellite view, to choose places that seem interesting - big roads/highways and buildings.

We visited Thiri Yadanar Shopping complex ( Google Coordinates 19.726662, 96.100000) - on the maps it looked like a big open air mall, streets lined with shops. And it was, just that most of it was empty - empty streets with buildings standing ready for at least several years now, waiting for their owners and tenants to come, a few here and there were occupied, but looked closed, signs already decaying - exactly the ghost town/post apocalyptic feeling we were looking for.

Thiri Yadanar

Then we went through some of the residential neighborhoods around, very nice looking 3-4 storey apartment blocks, with gardens and small parks, be it a bit overgrown at places.

residential buildings in Nay Pyi Taw

Next destination was the Diplomatic Housing Estate ( Google Coordinates  19.708782, 96.083282), I spotted it on Google maps and it looked like a grid of streets with one main road going through, so we decided to go have a look. We expected rows of empty houses and streets and weren't even sure if we would be able to actually go there, being a "diplomatic" zone. No check point to stop us from entering we freely drove our motorcycle in, but something wasn't right - on my GPS Google maps was showing that we were in the middle of a housing estate with streets, but looking around - we were in a field of nothing. I quickly realized my mistake after switching to satellite view - the Diplomatic Housing Estate, with the grid of streets and road was only in the idea stage.

Map view and satellite view of the Diplomatic zone

Not making the same mistake twice, this time looking at the satellite view of the city, we went to a neighborhood that from above looked like big buildings with wide roads ( Google Coordinates  19.716487, 96.128452). It turned out to be commercial offices, again most of them empty - main buildings open to the road, with large yards behind walls, different gem companies in the only occupied buildings. I didn't know there were so many gem companies in Myanmar to warrant a whole district just for them, but here it was. Again the ghost town feeling was there, completely empty streets and overgrown, ready for their new owners buildings.

empty building

We also went through the hotel zone during the day, still all the hotels look functioning with nice little gardens and roads leading to them, but then you look closely and there are no cars in front. There were so many hotels in our hotel zone and I am still not sure how many were actually having visitors.

Hotel zone

Is a restaurant deserving of its own place in this list? I'll put it here as it wasn't really that easy to find a decent place to eat in Nay Pyi Taw. Mr Bar BQ is a very good place for a dinner in, you guessed it, the restaurant zone. Best barbeque place in town.

This was all we managed to visit during our two day stay in Nay Pyi Taw, we left the next morning on a bus to Bagan. It is an interesting city and we really enjoyed our stay there, the atmosphere is quite unique. There were a few more attractions that we didn't go to:

Thatta Thattaha Maha Bawdi Pagoda (replica Buddha Gaya)

This place was 40 km further away from the Defence Services Museum, it would have taken most of the day to just drive there so we decided to give it a pass. It is a pagoda, replica of the Maha Bodhi pagoda in India, beautifully positioned next to a lake. In Google maps it is labeled Buddha Gaya (19.966634, 96.148876).

Naypyidaw Gems Museum

Museum of gems, as the title says - there are good reviews online, may be worth visiting if you have more time in Nay Pyi Taw and is very close to Myoma market.

National Museum

I am really sorry we didn't get to see this one. We have seen the one in Yangon and it was really interesting.

Planetarium

We couldn't find much info about the planetarium, but is on our list of things to see when we return to Nay Pyi Taw.

Nay Pyi Taw Zoological Gardens

A lot of animals in the zoo and as with other things in this city a lot of planning to make it a good place to visit, it even has a climate controlled penguin enclosure, but it is not well maintained and as is usual in poorer countries - the treatment of animals is not good.

Most of the animals were moved from the Yangon zoo during the time the government and administration was moving, a comedian who made the joke "all our animals are going to Naypiydaw" was imprisoned.

National Landmark Garden

Shaped like Myanmar, this 400 hectares garden is impressive and has miniature versions of the country's major attractions, amusement park with a ferris wheel, bumper cars and a log ride, two observation towers and restaurants. One hour tour on a golf cart is included in the admission price.

Destinations

National Landmark Gardens

Myanmar (Burma)

Spread across 400 acres, these gardens showcase Myanmar's grandest sites in miniature. Hop aboard a golf cart (a one-hour tour is included with admission), and zip from Kachin State to Mandalay, down to Yangon and beyond, while taking in diminutive versions of Golden Rock, Inle Lake and Shwedagon Paya. It's a fun, but undeniably kitschy experience, all the more so given the amusement-park rides scattered around – a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a shooting range and a splashy log ride.

One of the most fascinating exhibitions lies inside a model of Nay Pyi Taw's convention centre, which has an impressive mock-up of all of Nay Pyi Taw, including pagodas, hotels and government buildings (about as close as you'll get to the gated-off epicentre of power), and a levitating train station (sadly, the real train station doesn't actually levitate). There are also two observation towers (one with a restaurant) offering views over the surrounding landscape.

Unfortunately, in recent years it's all been allowed to deteriorate a bit. Not all the amusement-park rides are functioning and many of the models are beginning to fall apart – which makes it somewhat symbolic of Nay Pyi Taw itself!

It's about 22 miles northeast of the hotel zone (a 40-minute drive).

nay pyi taw safari park

Nay Pyi Daw

Nay Pyi Taw is the administrative capital of the Union of Myanmar, located at the center of Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory. Nay Pyi Taw was built in the central basin of Myanmar in the early 21st century to serve as the country’s new administrative center. The city officially replaced Yangon as the administrative capital of Myanmar in 2006. Centrally located, it is 391 km from Yangon and 302 km from Mandalay. It is notable for its unusual combination of  large size and very low population. The city hosted the 24th and 25th ASEAN Summit, the 3rd BIMSTEC Summit, the Ninth East Asia Summit, and the 2013 Southeast Asian Games.

Naypyidaw , located near Pyinmana, officially replaced Yangon as the capital of Myanmar in November 2005. It officially goes by the acronym of NPT and officially spelled Nay Pyi Taw.

Nay Pyi Taw comprises eight townships.

  • Zeyar Thiri
  • Pohba Thiri
  • Uttara Thiri
  • Dekina Thiri

Weather Conditions

In Nay Pyi Taw, the summers are short, sweltering, humid, and partly cloudy, the winters are short, warm, and mostly clear; and it is dry year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 61℉ to 103℉ and is rarely below 56℉ or above 108℉.  Based on the beach/pool score, the best time to visit Nay Pyi Taw for hot weather activities are from late February to mid April and from early November to early December.

Transportations

In this city, the best transportation includes Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, Myomazay Bus Stations and Nay Pyi Taw Taxi& Car Rental.

Nay Pyi Taw International Airport

Nay Pyi Taw International Airport is located 16 kilometers southeast of the city. There are several domestic flights daily linking Nay Pyi Taw with Yangon. It is a clean and beautiful airport. Due to the lack of International Traffic, the terminal is empty for almost 3 quarter of the day. However, the domestic is almost bustling of flights.

Myomazay Bus Stations

Nay Pyi Taw has two bus stations. The closest to the hotel zone and other key points is the Myomazay Bus Station, west of the Thabyaegone roundabout. Nay Pyi Taw’s handiest bus station lies near the Myoma market and has regular services to Yangon and Mandalay. Services from this station depart regularly for Yangon(MMK6,000, five to six hours), Mandalay (MMK5,300, four to five hours) and, less frequently, Bagan(MMK 11,000 , around six hours, daily at 7am and 8pm). Other departures include Kalaw, Taunggyi and Pyay.

Nay Pyi Taw Taxi & Car Rental Services

Run by government-affiliated Max Myanmar group. A taxi from the airport to town is about MMK20,000. Competition for taxi and car rental business is heating up in Nay Pyi Taw as “official” taxis take to the streets. But the only official approved taxi and rental firm is the Nay Pyi Taw taxi and car rental service run by Max Myanmar taxi and car rental service run by Max Myanmar Group of Companies, which started in early 2007. The company runs 50 VW saloon cars, including 20 that have red number plates. It has a different prices depend on the location.

Getting Around

There is no place for walking in Nay Pyi Taw. There is also no public bus service so the best way to get around the city by taking private car, taxi or motorbike taxi. Given the great distances to go anywhere, you are better off hiring a taxi for the day. Rates are around MMK10,000 per hour and MMK50,000 to MMK60,000 for the whole day. A motorbike taxi costs about MMK3,000 per hour.

Lets drive on the wide lonely road

Wide lonely road refers to the 20 lane highway in Nay Pyi Taw. There aren’t many capital cities in the world which boast 20-lane highways and fewer still where its possible to lie in the middle of the road and take photos. As mentioned before, you can take photo in the middle of the road but this time I would like to recommend to drive on this road. There is no traffic and you can drive as much as you want. I think every car user has a dream to drive on the long road with high speed and without traffic. If you have a same dream, this road can fill your dream. So, you should visit this road to drive on or take a photo if you have a plan to Nay Pyi Taw.

For the public reverence, replica Buddha Gaya in India, Thatta Thattaha Maha Bawdi Pagoda(162ft) is being built on the Udayayanthi Hillock in Pohbba Thiri Township. In this pagoda, every places and sites are very similar to Buddha Gaya and you are not disappointed to visit this place. You can learn and see about Buddha’s history without going Buddha Gaya. If you are in Nay Pyi Taw, you should pay a visit to this place.

Uppatasanti Pagoda is an outstanding landmark in Nay Pyi Taw. It is also called Peace Pagoda . The pagoda houses a tooth relic from China. It is nearly a same-sized of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and stands 99 meters (325ft) tall. It also has a same pattern of Shwedagon Pagoda. It is a beautiful and fresh place for visitors but it will extremely hot in the day time so I recommend you to visit night time.

In Nay Pyi Taw, Water Fountain Garden is one of the attraction places that you should visit. The garden was set up near the Naypyitaw-Taungnyo Road. The 165-acre garden is situated near the Naypyitaw City Hall with a steel structure arch-way. It also included a main pond with three fountains and 11 small ponds with 13 different fountains, a 30-foot (9.1m) high clock tower, nine recreation centers, two small gardens, two stone gardens and ten feet wide buggy road and footpaths. This place is very suitable for children and the best place to spend time with your family.

The gem museum located in Zabuthiri township, Nay Pyi Taw. The large area of upstairs museum decorated with large wall glasses and beautiful and wonderful decorations in modern designs. In Gems museum, precious jewels such as ruby and sapphire, quality jade lots and the largest pearl in Myanmar are put on display. At there, you can find unique gems and learn about precious gems from staff. The staff are eager to answer your questions.  Its open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm except Monday and Government days.

See the wildlife in Nay Pyi Taw Safari Park

Visit the largest zoo in South East Asia is definitely a fantastic experience to do on a Nay Pyi Taw tour.Safari Park is a wildlife park located in Nay Pyi Taw. The park consists of a Asian Safari, a Australian Safari, and a African Safari. You can see various kinds of wild animals and species in this park. The garden shows a mini version of Myanmar’s famous sites. Hop aboard a golf cart, and zip from Kachin state to Mandalay, down to Yangon and beyond, while taking in diminutive versions of Golden Rock, Inle Lake and Shwedagon Pagoda. Myoma Market

It is situated near the residential areas of government office workers. Fruit, vegetable, clothing, dining and daily necessities are available at this market. Prices are cheap and the sellers are friendly and helpful. I recommend you to visit this market in evening, it comes alive and better to get around. There is also the restaurants, garment stores, hardware stores, etc. It is active till late evening.

City Hall is one of the prominent Land Marks of Nay Pyi Taw. It is located in Taungnyo Road, Nay Pyi Taw. Nay Pyi Taw City Hall has many characteristics of Stalinist architecture, but with a Myanmar-style decorated roof. Behind the city hall, there is a park with a playground and water fountain complex, which hosts a musical light show every night. It opens 24hours in all day.

Myanmar International Convention Center (MICC)

MICC is located on 16 acres of land with 312,000 square feet in Zabuthiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, is a perfect venue for all events. It was built by the People’s Republic of China and completed on 15 March 2010. The MICC has plenary hall that can accommodate 1900 persons. The MICC building is formed with listening rooms, holding rooms, meeting rooms, VIP summit room, news briefing room, singing room and the 720 person capacity Banquet Hall. Large scale events such as Euromoney and ASEAN Summit were recently held at the Myanmar International Convention Centers (MICC 1 &2). It is open form 8:00AM to 5:00PM, except on Saturday and Sunday.

Nay Pyi Taw boasts an impressive Defense Services Museum; the 603 acre site is on a gentle slope to the north east of the city. It takes 30 minutes-drive outside of Nay Pyi Taw. This museum has a fine view across the city and countryside with a back drop of the Shan hills. It is divided into 3 main sections, the Army, Navy and Air force. At the entrance, tourists have to exchange the passport/ID card against a free day pass, and also driver’s ID is kept too. If you come with by taxi, you should keep it because one service area to another place is too far. This museum gives you a very interesting insight into the history of Myanmar and the achievements by the people and the military form the struggle for independence until present day. Around the building are collections of old and more recent military machinery, planes including spitfires, tanks, guns and ships. You also bring a bottle of water, you can’t find any vendors at this place. You should take at least a day to visit all of places in this museum. The museum closes at 4:00PM.

National Museum

Nay Pyi Taw National Museum is a modern museum located near the Kumudra circle, in Ottrathiri Township. Beside the older National Museum of Myanmar in Yangon, it is the second of the two national museums for Burmese art, history and culture in Myanmar. It was completed in 2015. Nay Pyi Taw abuzz with revellers as Thingyan festivities conclude

Nay Pyi Taw has been bustling with enthusiastic revellers as the annual Thingyan Water Festival comes to a close, sources say. The Mayor’s Pavilion featured entertainment programmes with local artistes and Myanmar traditional dances, as well as K-poppers and Russian artistes. Revellers toured round the city by car, and pedestrians enjoyed various Thingyan snacks at donation spots across Tatkon, Lewe, Zabuthiri, Ottarathiri, Dekkhinathiri, Zeyathiri, and Pobbathiri townships. The second Nay Pyi Taw Walking Thingyan witnessed more visitors on the last day than on previous days. Likewise, religious centres, including the Maravijaya Buddha Image and Uppatasanti Pagoda, were crowded with merit-makers. Festival-goers also visited famous landmarks such as the Nay Pyi Taw Water Fountain Park, Zoological Gardens, and Safari Park. All these festivities were possible thanks to security provided by the police and traffic police. The Mayor’s Pavilion, Commander-in-Chief’s (Army) Office’s Pavilion, and Transport and Communications Ministry’s Pavilion, as well as smaller township-level pavilions, closed down at the designated time in the evening. — Than Min Aung, Hein Min Soe/NT
