New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium is one of Boston’s most popular attractions , especially for families, and sees over 1.3 million visitors each year. As a leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation, the Aquarium teaches and advocates for global change, education and scientific research through their exhibits and activities.

At the New England Aquarium, you’ll find thousands of aquatic animals that both kids and adults will be amazed by. Whether you’re into the little blue penguins, green sea turtles or northern fur seals, you can guarantee you’ll see and learn about interesting animals during your visit.

Aside from animals and exhibits, the Aquarium also has the Simons IMAX Theatre , where you can experience animal-related films on the big screen, such as “Turtle Odyssey,” “Great White Shark” and “Oceans: Our Blue Planet.”

The New England Aquarium Whale Watch is another popular activity, which takes you on an adventure to spot whales via the Boston Harbor Cruises. These leave from Central Wharf, a short walk from the Aquarium.

Exhibitions at the New England Aquarium

There are many exhibits to check out at the New England Aquarium, including two shark-related exhibits: Science of Sharks, which highlights sharks from around the world, and the Shark and Ray Touch Tank, the largest of its kind on the East Coast.

The new Indo-Pacific Coral Reef exhibit takes you right into a coral reef via the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the 9,000-gallon tank. Here you’ll find over 1,000 fish and other marine animals as it’s intended to resemble the tropical waters found in the Indian Ocean and western and central Pacific Ocean.

And right across from the Indo-Pacific Coral Reef is the Giant Ocean Tank, which has been an Aquarium staple for quite some time. It has four stories and is filled with hundreds of reef animals from the Caribbean, including the popular Myrtle the green sea turtle.

Kids will also get a kick out of the Penguin exhibit, another go-to attraction at the Aquarium as it’s home to over 80 penguins. And then head over to the Marine Mammal Center to check out the northern fur seals. This Aquarium is one of three in the country where you can see these mammals in action.

Location and Getting There

The New England Aquarium is conveniently located at 1 Central Wharf, which is along the water near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market and in between the city’s North End and Fort Point neighborhoods.

There are many ways to get to the Aquarium, with many opting to take MBTA trains, as several stops are within walking distance, the closest being 100 yards away at the Blue Line’s Aquarium stop. You can access all the other MBTA lines from the Blue Line, but if you are on another line and prefer not to switch lines and walk a portion of the way, try getting off at the State stop on the Orange Line, the Government Center stop on the Green Line or the South Station stop on the Red Line. Each of these is under 15 minutes walking distance from the Aquarium.

Driving is another option that many out-of-town families prefer for convenience, though it is the pricier option given that city garages aren’t cheap. The closest parking garage is the Harbor Garage and there are other nearby lots that can be less expensive, including Rowes Wharf, 75 State Street and the Garage at Post Office Square.

Hours and Tickets

The New England Aquarium is open seven days a week throughout the year, with a few holiday exceptions—it's closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and open at noon on New Year’s Day. During the summer months of July and August, the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. remain the same every day. From September to June, weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends are extended an hour to 6 p.m.

General admission ticket prices are, as of August 2019:

• Child (3-11): $22
• Senior (60+): $29
• Children (under 3): Free
•  Aquarium Members: Free (become a member here )

Tickets for IMAX and whale watches are purchased either on their own or as combination passes if you want to experience one of these along with the Aquarium exhibits, which will save you at least a few dollars per person.

If you plan to see several of Boston’s popular attractions, there are two other ways to save: the Boston CityPASS and the Go Boston Card . The CityPass, which is valid for nine days, gives you a discount of 44 percent or more on admission to the Aquarium and four other attractions, such as the Museum of Science or Boston Harbor Cruises. The Go Boston Card allows you to take your pick of over 40 sights to see over up to seven consecutive days.

Dining and Shopping

There are two places to grab a bite to eat while visiting the New England Aquarium: the Harbor View Café and The Reef.

The Harbor View Café, located on the second floor, is a reasonably priced family dining option serving sandwiches, pizza, salads, burgers, and sustainable seafood. While you eat, take in views of Boston’s skyline and the harbor.

If you’re looking to sit outside, try The Reef in the Aquarium Plaza, which is open seasonally, also with views of Boston and the harbor. Here you can order several New England classics like lobster rolls and clam chowder, along with flatbreads and other seasonal dishes and snacks.

Right near the Aquarium, you’ll also find food trucks during warm weather months and plenty of other restaurants to check out as well.

And of course, when it comes to shopping, like any good tourist attraction, there’s a fully stocked gift shop in the lobby with animal everything—books, plush animals, clothing and more—to take home as souvenirs. You can feel good about your purchase knowing that all gift shop proceeds go right back into supporting the Aquarium’s education, conservation, and research programs.

Where to Go Nearby

If it’s your first time visiting Boston, you’ll definitely want to check out Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, which are a very short walk from the Aquarium and home to many restaurants, bars, and shops.

The city’s North End neighborhood is where you’ll find lots of great Italian food . Walk along Hanover Street and pop into Modern Pastry or Mike’s Pastry for cannolis and order an espresso martini at Bricco after dinner.

The popular Freedom Trail will take you through both Faneuil Hall and the North End, along with many other must-see attractions. This is an activity that most tourists participate in, whether it’s following along the red brick pathway on their own or taking a guided tour.

In the other direction, check out Fort Point , an area that’s home to the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, the Children’s Museum and several restaurants and bars. And just beyond that is the Seaport , another neighborhood that is always growing, with more restaurants, shops and more opening regularly.

10 Things to Do at the New England Aquarium in Boston

In the heart of Boston, the New England Aquarium opened in 1969 and has over one million visitors each year. There are over 20,000 sea creatures who live at the aquarium and visitors are able to explore four floors of exhibits in addition to outdoor plaza exhibits and the Simons Theater.

Travel Tips:

• The aquarium is open all year, with extended hours during summer months. More information on museum hours and admission here . Discounts on tickets include the Boston CityPASS and Go Boston Card , and reciprocity for members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
• Information on whale watch tours can be found here .
• This map outlines the four levels of exhibition space. Most guests start at level four and walk down the ramps to the main level.
• There are five parking garages within a half mile of the aquarium; this worksheet has helpful information as it relates to parking and taking the T. Visitors can also take the T Blue Line to the Aquarium stop, or the ferry from three commuter ferries: Hingham Shipyard, Salem, and Winthrop Ferries to Rowan’s Wharf, which is less than a five minute walk. More information on driving directions here .
• Restrooms are located on the main level behind the admission desk and lockers are available for rent.
• The aquarium is handicap accessible and strollers are allowed in most exhibits (there is stroller parking in some of the smaller spaces).
• Visitors must exit through the Gift Shop on the main level.
• Plan on 2-3 hours to explore all four floors of exhibits, with additional time for shows in the Simons Theater or animal feedings.

10 Things to Do at the New England Aquarium:

1. Compare the size of various shark teeth and bites in the Science of Sharks exhibit.

2. Learn the various behaviors and ways of communication of the African penguins in the Blue Planet Action Center. There are over 60 African and rockhopper penguins that call the aquarium home and visitors can watch the penguins being fed, weighed, and cleaned throughout the day.

3. Watch the Northern Fur Seals swim on their backs; the New England Aquarium is only one of three aquariums in America where the fur sea lions call home.

4. Compare your height with the height of a whale or a shark.

5. Be on the lookout for a rare (1 in 2 million) blue lobster in the Isle of Shoals lobster exhibit.

6. Peer down into the giant ocean tank from the fourth floor Coral Reef Center . The 200,000 salt water gallon tank is 23 feet deep, 40 feet wide and is home to hundreds of Caribbean reef animals, including Myrtle, the 90 year old sea turtle.

7. Search for the smallest sea creature (perhaps the Caribbean dwarf seahorses) and largest (perhaps Myrtle, she’s over 550 pounds!) in the aquarium. 

8. Attempt to count the number of local blueback herring swimming in the School of Fish exhibit (hint, it’s close to 2,000!)

9. Attend a daily Animal Encounter , whether it be a touch tank, feeding, or show. Note: These activities are currently offered virtually during pandemic restrictions in 2021.  

10. Catch a movie at the Simons Theatre , located across the plaza from the main aquarium. The theater has similar hours to the aquarium and features 20-25 minute films  on a six story screen. See the current features here . Note: There is an additional fee for films.

The Museum of Broadway is designed to take guests through a chronological history of “the Great White Way” (the nickname for Broadway because of the bright lights of the theater marques), with three major segments: The Map Room, The Timeline, and The Making of a Broadway Show. Having a Back Up Plan

If you are one of my regular followers, you know how important I think having an alternate plan is; I hate surprises and always try to anticipate problems ahead of traveling with my family. The website is well organized and has suggestions organized by neighborhood , season , or family friendly activities . If you’re planning on visiting for a few days, consider purchasing a CityPass or Philadelphia Pass , both of which offer substantial savings if you visit multiple locations (most of which are on my top 20 list).

My kids love aquariums so of course we have to visit the infamous Boston New England Aquarium. It did not disappoint them!

First off, the location is easy to get to and close by to many other attractions families would be interested in.  For us, we took the commuter rail train in from Rhode Island to South Station and walked over from there enjoying the sights as we walked.  If the weather is good, I suggest you do the same as it is great for sightseeing purposes.  If not then you can visit via car or take the local public transit rail, the “T” or the bus as well.  There are numerous options that are easy so don’t let this overwhelm you if you aren’t familiar with Boston.  People are nice and it’s fairly easy to get around.

Once we arrived, the seals were outside greeting on-lookers. All the kids were thoroughly entertained by their upside down swimming and twirling. Since we visited during school vacation, it was very busy inside.

The aquarium itself is not too large but, big enough to spend a few hours with the kids observing the sea creatures, learning new things and seeing local animals as well as exotic ones.

We would say the animals we enjoyed the most are the handful of sea turtles, octopus, sea lions, the tropical fish, electric eel and the penguins. We were shocked to see how large one of the sea turtles is-it is massive!  Who knew they could grow that large?

If you want more activities after the aquarium, Simons Theatre in the adjacent building offers various films related to nature.  Adult entrance is $10 and kids are $7.  We did not go to this 3-d attraction but it seems both fun and educational so I would like to try it.  You can add this experience onto your aquarium ticket or go to the theater without going to the aquarium.  If you go, please let me know how it is in the comments section below.

• Weather : This location is mainly indoors so the weather doesn’t matter too much. But, if you intend to come via train it may be best on a day when the weather is comfortable for you to walk outside.
• Parking : The aquarium doesn’t have any of it’s own parking there are plenty of garages close by.  Check here for the best places to park.
• Admissions : Adults are $34, children > 3 years old are $25, children <3 years old are FREE, 60+ years old are $32.
• Location : An indoor aquarium with penguins, seals, stingrays, baby sharks, sea turtles an octopus and much more.  They have a gift shop and dining options.
• Hours : The hours vary depending upon the day and mainly consist of 9-6 with closures on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
• Duration :  We stayed here about two hours and did everything we wanted to do.
• Tips and Recommendations :  Book tickets in advance on-line.  Use AAA discount , library passes and any other reduced fare options you can as a visit here for the entire family is costly.  If you think you will visit more often, then check into membership options for a more economic experience t throughout the year.

Description

Summer is right around the corner, and registration is beginning for summer camp at the Aquarium! Nature serves as our outdoor classroom as we travel to explore aquatic environments throughout the Boston area. Harbor Discoveries is an interactive marine and environmental science program that incorporates traditional camp activities. Programs could include behind-the-scenes activities in Aquarium galleries, excursions to Boston Harbor Islands, an adventure on a schooner, daily field trips to North Shore and South Shore habitats, and an overnight experience. 

Camp runs from July 10 through August 25. Individual programs run for one or two weeks. Registration opens January 9 for Aquarium members and February 6 for nonmembers. For general information, please visit the website, call the camp office at 617-226-2425, or email [email protected].

Insider Tips for Visiting Boston's Aquarium with Kids

Must-see attractions at the new england aquarium.

When you walk from the ticketing area into the multi-story, open-format Aquarium, it's tempting to wander toward the first exhibit of colorful, aquatic eye candy you see. But it's smart to go with a game plan to make sure you hit all the hot spots. Here are the exhibits kids seem to love most.

Marine Mammals (outdoors)

The live animal fun starts before you even get inside the doors of the Aquarium. There’s a harbor seal tank outside that's open year-round, and it's truly fascinating to watch these sleek creatures glide through the water just a few feet from your face. 

New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center (indoors)

Inside the Aquarium, you can check out more seals and sea lions—performing amazing tricks, no less!—in the sunlit, enclosed pavilion that's just beyond the main exhibits. Our hearts were stolen by frisky Ron, the toddler of the sea lion pups, born in 2017, and Luna, the youngest of the fur seals, who arrived to the Aquarium in 2016.

Because the penguins are situated on the ground floor in the center of the Aquarium, they are among the first things you encounter after entry. The Aquarium is home to more than 80 penguins. It's fun to watch them waddle about the rocks and dive into the water. And, yes, they don't smell like roses. Expect your kids to giggle at the olfactory effects of peering over the railing and into the penguins' habitat. Still, any fans of  Happy Feet  will love getting up close with these sweet creatures. 

Giant Ocean Tank

This is, quite literally, the centerpiece of the Aquarium. A spiral ramp hugs the tank, and kids seem to love walking up it. It's actually an ingenious way to keep active kids moving while looking at amazing creatures. The four-story tank contains coral reefs and hundreds of Caribbean reef animals, including sharks, sea turtles and many varieties of fish. Of course, the most most exciting moments are when a giant shark skims the glass nearby, emitting squeals from kids (and grown-ups).

Sea Jellies

Take in the other worldly sea jellies exhibit. These intriguing creatures look almost likes works of art suspended in water.

Marine Ecosystems

Learn about our local marine ecosystem in the Gulf of Maine tanks. Then learn about a marine ecosystem on the West Coast at the Olympic Coast Exhibit.

Science of Sharks Exhibit

Expand your knowledge of one of the ocean’s most feared creatures with hands-on activities in the Science of Sharks exhibit.

Shark and Ray Touch Tank

The Aquarium's touch tank may be the most exciting feature of the Aquarium for kids. We find it's a great finale to a visit. Children can literally lean over a protective barrier and stroke gentle sharks and rays that glide by.

Special Programming at the New England Aquarium

With so much to see with a basic ticket, special programs are by no means a must at the Aquarium. But if you have extra time, consider setting aside time for the following:

Animal Encounters

Do your kids want to get really up-close-and-personal with the creatures at the Aquarium? You can book a special session with them.

Simons Giant SCreen 3D Theater

Get a glimpse of our planet in a totally unique way with a movie at the adjacent giant screen 3D theater. There are always special films playing that you can’t see anywhere else.

Whale Watch

Book a whale watch when you go to the Aquarium to see the ocean’s biggest animals in person. These whales won’t fit in any tanks and the only way to see them is in the wild!

Classes and Summer Camps

Starting as young as 12 months and going up through the teen years, the Aquarium offers classes and summer camps specially designed to get each age group excited and educated about marine life. 

Where To Eat Near the New England Aquarium

If it's a nice day, you can save money by packing a lunch or snack. Enjoy it just outside the Aquarium at the waterfront tables that dot the harbor. Inside, the  Harbor View Cafe  is the New England Aquarium’s own dining area. It features floor-to-ceiling windows so you can take in scenic views of the city while you eat. The cafeteria options are very family-friendly and there are lots of high chairs available for the littlest diners. In the warmer months, there’s also an outdoor cafe at the Aquarium. But this being the most tourist-friendly part of town,   there are plenty of other kid-friendly dining options in walking distance.   If you've found an appetite for seafood, look no further than the Legal Sea Foods directly across the plaza. You’ll find reliably good meals for parents and kids alike. There’s even an aquarium and lobster tank in the restaurant to keep kids entertained. Panera Bread is j ust a few blocks away from the Aquarium at 200 High Street. Finally, the  Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market  area is bursting with kid-friendly dining options that will please any palate. It'ss only about a five-minute walk from the Aquarium. What To Know Before Visiting the New England Aquarium with Kids

How to buy tickets to the Boston's aquarium

We found that  getting tickets in advance  so we didn't have to stand in line with eager kids was key. You can always buy in person, but the lines do tend to get long.

Discounted tickets for the New England Aquarium

Getting into the Aquarium isn’t cheap, but there are ways to make it less expensive. Kids under 3 are always free and members get in free (plus get other perks). Online ticketing is easy to do here, but if you’re looking to save some dough, check to see whether your local library offers discounted tickets to the Aquarium (mine in Somerville does) first. And if you’re visiting Boston for more than a day, consider buying the  Boston CityPASS  or the  Go Boston Card : Both offer admission to the Aquarium as well as other local attractions for a bundled price.

How to save on special exhibits 

If you also plan on checking out an IMAX movie or doing a Whale Watch while you're at the Aquarium, you can buy combination tickets that are less expensive than buying each separately.

Where to park near the New England Aquarium

There are a variety of parking garages near the Aquarium, some of which offer  discounted rates . You can also take the T and get off at the Aquarium stop, which is on the Blue Line. You can even take a boat from Hull, Hingham, Logan Airport, Salem and Winthrop.

Strollers at the New England Aquarium

If you bring your stroller but don’t want it inside the Aquarium, there is even a stroller check right inside the entrance.

New England Aquarium Gift Shop

Like most museums, the gift shop is situated between the exhibits and the exit. It's quite a large store with plenty of cute and interesting gifts, from beautiful plush sea creatures to marine science kits. We find it's a good idea to set expectations before heading into the Aquarium to avoid haggling on the heels of a wonderful visit.

Things to do near the New England Aquarium

If you still have energy in the tank after a day at the Aquarium and it's decent weather, consider a short walk to the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Greenway Carousel . This charming merry-go-round is populated not by horses, but by a variety of animals native to the region, including some of the sea creatures seen at the Aquarium.

Boa constrictor gives birth to 14 baby snakes after living alone for nearly a decade

Ronaldo, a 6-foot Brazilian rainbow boa constrictor kept at a school in England, was thought to be male — until the snake gave birth to 14 babies last month.

The boa had not had contact with another snake for nearly a decade, so she appears to have undergone a natural process of asexual reproduction called parthenogenesis. The term is derived from the Greek words for “virgin birth.” 

The school said this is the third documented case of this type of birth that it is aware of from a Brazilian rainbow boa in captivity.

Ronaldo lives at the City of Portsmouth College, an academic and vocational school for 16- to 18-year-olds in southern England, where the snake is used to help train students about how to care for animals.

“I received a call from a colleague of mine asking me why I had released some small snakes in with Ronaldo,” said Pete Quinlan, an animal technician at the college who has cared for the snake for the last nine years.

Quinlan said his initial thought that day, June 21, was that there had been a mistake. Although it was his day off, Quinlan went in and immediately recognized that the snakes with Ronaldo were baby rainbow boa constrictors. 

“I was completely puzzled by it,” he said, noting that he has worked with reptiles for over 50 years. 

“I’ve kept literally thousands of snakes within that time and bred a lot of snakes as well,” Quinlan added. “I’ve never heard of it before.”In a news release, the college described the event as a “ miracle birth ,” though some snakes and other animals — including crocodiles and honey bees — have been known to produce offspring asexually. 

Parthenogenesis occurs when an embryo develops without being fertilized. The process is especially rare for vertebrates , including snakes.

Unlike sexual reproduction, which requires sperm to fertilize an egg, parthenogenesis can involve byproducts of the process that creates eggs, called polar bodies, which are used to fill that gap. These cells get combined back into the eggs, giving the embryos two similar — but not identical — sets of DNA.

Parthenogenesis can also occur when sex cells duplicate then join back together; this process creates clones of the mother, though it primarily occurs in plants, not animals. 

Researchers are still investigating why parthenogenesis occurs in animals, and how frequently.

Quinlan said some researchers believe that snakes undergo parthenogenesis when females do not have a mate for most of their lives. In recent years, several other reports have emerged of animals reproducing asexually in captivity. Last year, a shark at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois gave birth to a pup via parthenogenesis, after having no contact with a male shark for at least four years. And a 2021 study found that California condors, a critically endangered bird species, reproduced asexually in captivity even though they had access to mates. 

A stingray named Charlotte, who became pregnant via parthenogenesis at an aquarium in North Carolina, died on Sunday . The aquarium announced last month that the ray — whose story even became the subject of a “Saturday Night Live” sketch — was no longer pregnant and had been diagnosed with a rare disease .

Quinlan said he initially got Ronaldo from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a charity that supports animal welfare. A vet had said that Ronaldo was male, and Quinlan never questioned that. It’s harder to determine a snake’s sex when they’re adults than when they are babies, he said.

Ronaldo is a “very popular snake” at school, Quinlan said, adding that the students had never taken care of newborn snakes before, so this should be a “really good experience” for them.

Evie Allen, a student at the college who works with Ronaldo, said she was “shocked” and “confused” when a friend told her that the snake had given birth.

“I genuinely thought he was joking,” she said.The college intends to keep one or two of the baby snakes, and to care for the rest until they have had a few meals and are healthy enough to go to new homes. 

Ronaldo’s story has garnered attention around the world.

“I didn’t expect it to go quite as viral as this has,” said Paula Hetherington, who manages marketing and communications for the college.

“If you Google Ronaldo the snake now, it seems to be more popular than Ronaldo the footballer,” Quinlan said.

The result is a destination steeped in history, as ever, with reinvented outdoor spaces for drinking, dining and recreating, and more change in the air. Waterfront redevelopment has spread farther and wider, spawning new harbor-adjacent art spaces and breweries, while a forward-looking focus on water transportation means more ferries and water taxis to get you where you’re going, while enjoying sparkling views and salty breezes.

But that neighborhood is still here, too. For dinner, try one of its gems: Rincon Limeno , in Day Square, serves Peruvian food in a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. Simons Theatre

The Simons Theatre screens a collection of 3D nature documentaries and films on the biggest movie screen in New England each day.

Daily Presentations and Feeding Schedule

Visitors are invited to enjoy daily presentations in the Marine Mammal Center, at the top of the Giant Ocean Tank, or at the Harbor Seal Exhibit. Watch our penguin aquarists feed the penguins daily and ask questions about our animals and their habitat. This schedule is subject to change. Please confirm times at the Information Desk upon arrival.
