Oceania Cruises (oceaniacruises.com) is a Miami -based passenger shipping company operating a fleet of upper-premium, mid-sized vessels. Between April 2007 and September 2014, Oceania was owned by Apollo Management. The company's owner since 2014 is NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) - also the owner of NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Oceania as a cruise line brand offers a luxury product with relatively shorter itineraries but is also well-known for its Around The World voyages lasting up to 180 days.

Since January 2023, Oceania's President and CEO is Frank A. Del Rio (Frank Del Rio Jr/former NCLH's President's son), who succeeded Howard Sherman. The latter succeeded (in January 2022) Bob Binder (Oceania's co-founder, currently NCLH's Vice Chairman). Between 2016-2021, Howard Sherman was NCLH's Executive VP (Onboard Revenue and Destination Services). Oceania's and RSSC-Regent's Presidents both report to NCL's President (currently Harry Sommer).

As a travel brand, Oceania is widely recognized for having the finest cuisine at sea.

Company history and changes

The Oceania cruise line was founded in 2002 by travel industry veterans Frank Del Rio (former VP of Renaissance Cruises/1989-2001- defunct ) and Joseph Watters (Independent Director of the brokerage company MarineMax).

Oceania initially chartered the ex-Renaissance vessel "R Two" (from Cruiseinvest), which in October 2002 was renamed Insignia . In April 2003, the boat was 3-month chartered to TRM France (travel agency), and during that period Oceania had no fleet. On June 15, 2003, the company restarted services with 2 vessels - Insignia (renamed Regatta ) and a new vessel (R One, sistership of Regatta, also chartered from Cruiseinvest) that debuted as the current Insignia.

At the end of 2005, a third (ex-Renaissance) vessel entered Oceania's fleet when from CruiseInvest was chartered R-Five (renamed Nautica ). At the naming ceremony, Frank del Rio announced a plan to add a fourth boat ( Marina ) in July 2007. However, this didn't come to pass.

The majority of Oceania's stock was sold in February 2007 to the NYC -based Apollo Management. The next month Oceania made a memorandum agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct two 1260-passenger newbuilds . The contract was finalized in June 2007, with delivery dates scheduled for January and July 2011. The contract also included an option for a 3rd unit of the same design/sistership to be delivered in May 2012, but Oceania declined that option.

After being leased out to Hapag-Lloyd (as Columbus 2) for two years, Insignia returned to Oceania in 2014. In May 2014, Oceania and Fincantieri were close to making a deal on two additional ships. On September 2, 2014, NCLH purchased "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (the parent company of Oceania and RSSC-Regent) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

On November 25, 2014, NCLH revealed an agreement with Princess Cruises to purchase Ocean Princess (now Sirena ) for Oceania, upon delivery in March 2016. The ship underwent a 35-day drydock refit (US$40 million) in Marseille France and was renamed "MS Sirena".

In September 2018, Oceania partnered with Luggage Forward (USA-based luggage shipping company). The new service allows passengers to ship their luggage doorstep-to-stateroom (and back home again), thus truly traveling light. Luggage Forward provides premier door-to-door shipping services to 200 countries worldwide (including over 150 cruise ports). The company's own team of Customs specialists handles the country-specific paperwork to ensure on-time deliveries. Travelers can track the shipment in real-time. Luggage Forward service can be booked online or via phone. Rates are fixed, without additional charges or fees applied. Luggage's arrival on time and safety is guaranteed. Luggage Forward offers money-back plus US$500 on-time guarantee.

On June 6, 2022, NCLH announced an expansion of its fleetwide sustainability program "Sail & Sustain". Extending its animal welfare policy, the shipowner is now fully committed to responsible animal food sourcing practices (regarding pork, chicken, eggs, and seafood) within the global fleet's supply chain. The goal is by the year 2025, fleetwide (NCL, Oceania, Regent) to be sourced only cage-free eggs, crate-free pork, certified sustainable seafood, and chicken purchased from American and Canadian suppliers who meet GAP (Global Animal Partnership) standards.

On January 8, 2019, Oceania's parent company NCLH announced a shipbuilding order with Fincantieri for two units planned for Oceania. Both vessels are of the new ALLURA-Class - the next stage of the fleet expansion project OceaniaNEXT. The new boats are designed and built by Fincantieri (in Ancona Italy ), with scheduled deliveries in 2023 ( Vista ) and 2025 ( Allura ).

Each of the 67000 GT-ton ALLURA-Class vessels (Vista, and Allura) has max capacity 1470 passengers plus 800 staff/crew. These are mid-sized ships similar in design and amenities to Oceania's 2011-2012-built Riviera and Marina .

The contract price for each of the newbuilds is ~EUR 575 million (per unit). NCLH obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the total contract price, subject to certain Italian government approvals.

As of 2019, NCLH had 10 ship orders with planned deliveries thru 2027. Of those, 7x units were for NCL-Norwegian, 2x for Oceania, 1x for RSSC-Regent.

Why choose Oceania ships?

  • Cuisine: Oceania's chefs prepare noteworthy cuisine in all onboard restaurants.
  • Destinations: Oceania itineraries offer overnights in top ports and are destination-oriented.
  • Midsize Ships: The deluxe ships of Oceania are quite manageable in size: even the largest one has fewer than 1,300 guests.
  • No Smoking: Oceania vessels are almost entirely smoke-free. There are small, designated areas for smokers.
  • Surprisingly Affordable: Oceania cruises approach true luxury in style, but are quite affordable when it comes to fares.

The sophisticated ambiance of Oceania extends to the entertainment provided onboard. Guests can listen to a jazz band or 12-piece orchestra, watch a cabaret show or enjoy regional entertainment from the ports of call. The line regularly hosts guest lecturers, from former ambassadors to famous authors. Oceania cruises combine the best of new and old, preserving classic traditions, such as afternoon tea while offering contemporary services like 24-hour Internet access.

Oceania voyages are adult-oriented. These are not a good pick for families, particularly those sailing with infants and toddlers. There are no dedicated kids' facilities available onboard, and parents are completely responsible for children's behavior and entertainment. Some teenagers who don't mind the absence of video arcades might enjoy the unique ports of call.

Other advantages of Oceania include:

  • Many Oceania cruises include airfare in pricing.
  • Pre-/postcruise Hotel Collection Packages include private group transfers.
  • There is no dining charge on Oceania Cruises ships, but wine and cocktail prices are relatively high.
  • Guests may bring up to 3 bottles of wine per stateroom from ports of call, but have in mind the corkage fee - it is $25 per bottle to bring wine to the restaurant.
  • Oceania offers shore excursion collections. These have to be reserved prior to sailing and save a lot.
  • Oceania Cruises was the first line to upgrade bedding to the highest standard. Passengers can count on a good sleep on these ships.

Early-booking cruise discounts (OLife Advantage)

Since September 2015, Oceania Cruises offers an extended early booking program (OLife Advantage). Discounts and benefits by this incentive program are available to all Oceania customers booking itineraries in Europe, Alaska and Canada-New England.

OLife Advantage rewards all booked passengers, regardless of stateroom category. The list of bonus perks (complimentary amenities) may include unlimited internet, pre-paid gratuities, onboard credit, free cabin upgrades. The OLife Advantage program also provides free (complimentary) shore excursions per cruise, depending on itinerary's length: 3 tours (itineraries up to 9 days), 4 tours (itineraries 10-13 days) and 5 tours (itineraries 14+ days).

Wavenet (free, high-speed Internet) fleetwide

In April 2018, Oceania Cruises introduced the Wavenet (high-speed internet) fleetwide / on all ships. The service allows faster uploading/downloading of big files, watching Netflix movies, social media sharing, music, and video live streaming (Spotify Facetime, Skype).

Oceania's new Wavenet Internet service is free of charge and unlimited. As for amenities, it is included in the ticket prices for all staterooms (suite and cabin categories) and on all itineraries.

The "Wavenet Prime" (Internet upgrade) is available for purchase at USD 10 pp per day. It allows passengers to stream music, videos, movies.

  • International Expeditions (leaving from Havana, charter flights out of Miami)
  • Victory Cruise Lines - MS Victory I - fly-cruises from Miami to Havana (homeport Cienfuegos /departures)

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government to allow ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

Explore New Viking Ocean Voyages 2024-2026

Explore New Viking Ocean Voyages 2024-2026

Itineraries for Viking’s two newest 998-guest sister ships, the  Viking Vela ®, scheduled to debut in December 2024, and the  Viking Vesta ®, set to join the award-winning fleet in July 2025, are included in the new brochure. Both ships will sail Viking’s popular Mediterranean and Northern European journeys during their inaugural seasons, allowing more guests to explore over 418 ports of the world The Viking Way®.

The brochure contains the new 15-day  Mediterranean Discoveries  and 20-day  Iberian & Mediterranean Odyssey  combination voyages. These itineraries explore Portsmouth’s maritime history in England and the coastal towns of Spain, including the magnificent Roman past and tranquil beauty of Cartagena, before sailing on to the French Riviera. The  Iberian & Mediterranean Odyssey  extends to the spectacular Dalmatian coastline of Croatia.

On its 2025 and 2026 voyages, the 15-day  Viking Homelands  journey is scheduled to return to Tallinn, Estonia, a popular port for curious travellers located on the coast of the Baltic Sea.

Viking’s popular 15-day  Malta, Morocco & the Mediterranean  voyage, which features visits to UNESCO-designated sites, north African cities, the Alhambra palace and other scenic wonders, has been extended to include two additional sailing dates in December 2024.

“Our new brochure is a must-read for travel agents looking to book their clients’ next ocean voyage. We have more itineraries than ever, and we welcome the  Viking Vela  and the  Viking Vesta  to our fleet. This increased capacity is exciting, meaning there’s more choice for travel agents and their clients, allowing us to introduce even more curious travellers to the Viking way of exploration,” said Michelle Black, ANZ Managing Director, Viking.

Viking encourages travel agents to take advantage of Viking’s  Discover More  sale and benefit from savings of up to $3,600 per couple on 2024, 2025 and 2026 ocean voyages for bookings made on or before 31 May 2024.

Viking’s 2024-2026 Ocean Brochure is available to order now from TIFS. For additional information, contact your Viking Commercial Manager, visit the travel agent portal at myvikingjourney.com/agents, contact Viking at [email protected]/ 138 747 (AU) or visit viking.com.

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

  • I've sailed on Royal Caribbean's largest cruise ships , Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas.
  • Both megaships are jam-packed with people, amenities, and dining options.
  • But if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations, they might not be for you.

Insider Today

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

If you're looking for a cheap and fast trip, try Margaritaville at Sea . Craving something more upscale? Consider Oceania Cruises.

But if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's megaships .

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

By 2028, Royal Caribbean wants one-third of its fleet to be megaships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, entered service in January, unseating Wonder of the Seas as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can fit over 19,000 people — about 4,500 crew and 14,500 guests. Each ship has eight neighborhoods and there are 29 bars and 48 eateries between them.

I've attended complimentary sailings on both Wonder and Icon, the longest of which was three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to the inescapable crowds, as a solo-adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated.

Related stories

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide; Wonder has three of them and Icon has six.

If you want to go on a cruise with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini golf — Royal Caribbean's megaships could be your best option.

Wonder and Icon are jam-packed with activity spaces like ice-skating rinks and ziplines.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy, bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Megavessels might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise

If you want a relaxing vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — you shouldn't stay on either Royal Caribbean yacht.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you'd be better off spending more upfront to reserve a premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, Icon and Wonder exclusively sail in the Caribbean.

Some destinations, such as French Polynesia, have set restrictions on which cruises can travel there amid concerns about pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or, really, anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to travel on a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with a different cruise line like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but you'll get a quieter vacation to locations no megaship will likely be allowed to visit.

Foreign traveler caught trying to sneak into Japan by climbing down rope from cruise ship

Casey Baseel

Goes over the side one day into cruise that already started in Japan .

On Monday, the MSC Bellissima started its latest Japanese voyage, departing the port of Yokohama in the evening and sailing west through the night. The ship, operated by Switzerland’s MSC Cruises, docked in Kobe at around 3 o’clock in the afternoon the following day, and was scheduled to leave for its next stop late that night.

Shortly before 10 p.m., though, the Kobe Prefectural police received a call from a witness informing them that someone had fallen from the ship into the sea . A search and rescue team was dispatched, and after arriving on the scene they found the man the witness had seen, who appears to be a French man around 50 years old .

Now, if you’re shocked that a reputable cruise operator cam run such a dangerous ship that passengers are falling off of it even while it’s docked at a modern port with calm waters, it should be pointed out that this wasn’t an accident that occurred while the man wasn’t using the vessel’s facilities in ways they were designed for. As a matter of fact, the man had been purposefully trying to leave the ship…by climbing down a rope so that he could sneak into the country illegally .

oceania cruise japan 2024

As you can see from the above photos of the MSC Bellissima , it’s by no means a little boat. Regardless of what point the man started his descent from, it’s a long way down.

It’s unclear if dropping into the water first and then making his was to shore had been the man’s plan all along or if he’d accidentally fallen from the rope. Though he suffered some scrapes on his hands, he came away from the incident with no major injuries and is reportedly in stable condition .

It’s a baffling series of events for many reasons , not the least of which is that, with the MSC Bellissima starting this cruise from the port of Yokohama, the man ostensibly had to already have entered the country in order to board the ship in the first place, so it would seem that he’d be in possession of a valid passport that would allow entry into Japan under more conventional means. It wasn’t like the night he went down the rope was his last chance to reach Japanese soil either. After leaving Kobe, the ship’s next port of call is Kochi City, and though that’s followed by a stop at Jeju Island in Korea, after that the cruise returns to Japan to dock at Kagoshima City before coming back to Yokohama at the end of the cruise, so it would seem he had at least three more chances to get off the boat in Japan without resorting to stuntman-style tactics.

On the other hand, it could be that the man lacked a proper passport or knew he’d be denied entry into Japan for other reasons, but that just raises the question of why someone in such a position would board a cruise knowing they’d have to sneak back into the county, and apparently was so antsy about the situation that they made the attempt the very next day.

You can bet that those are things that the local immigration authorities, whom the man has been turned over to, will be looking into during their investigation and questioning.

By CNT Editors

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

Stay at the splendid Edwardian home of Long Lee Manor overlooking plains teeming with wildlife. Or set out from Bayethe Tented Lodge, a tranquil paradise in the heart of the lush African bush. Perhaps you’ll choose Pumba Bush Lodge, where you’ll feel one with nature in your own private glass-enclosed chalet. Whichever you choose, your lodge promises luxurious amenities and unforgettable adventures.

Discover not only the extreme luxury and ultramodern skyscrapers for which Dubai is renowned, but also the natural wonders of the surrounding desert. Journey across the sand dunes on a safari, ride a camel through a nature reserve at sunset, and view the glory of the night sky from a stargazing platform far from the city lights. Cruise in a dhow along the Musandam Peninsula, where fjord-like inlets and mountainous terrain create breathtaking panoramic views.

Hong Kong

Terracotta Warriors

In the center of the Shaanxi Province, Xian marked the eastern starting point of the Silk Road and was home to the ruling houses of four great Chinese dynasties. Perhaps nothing better showcases the power and wealth of this ancient capital than the terracotta army that protects the tomb of China’s first emperor. Behold one of the greatest archaeological finds of the modern era on a visit to the 22-square-mile site where life-size sculptures of warriors, acrobats, animals, courtiers and more have been unearthed.

  • 2-nights at the Kowloon Shangri-la Hotel (Deluxe room)

In Canberra, contrast the classical architecture of the Old Parliament House with the contemporary design of the modern Parliament House and then visit the Australian War Memorial.

  • 1 night at the Langham Hotel or similar in Sydney
  • 2 nights at the Canberra Hyatt or similar
  • Breakfast on Day 2, 3 and 4

Culinary Delights of the Ottomans

Culinary Delights of the Ottomans

A delight for foodies, this immersion into the cuisine of the Ottoman Empire is deliciously enlightening. Browse the royal kitchen in Topkapi Palace. Follow the infatuating aromas wafting through stalls of Turkish delicacies in the Women’s Bazaar and Spice Market. Dine on dishes identical to those served to the Ottoman sultans and sample desserts concocted from centuries-old recipes. Istanbul landmarks such as the Blue Mosque and Chora Museum enhance your grasp of the Ottoman period, as does Selimiye Mosque in Edirne.

  • 4 nights in Istanbul
  • Entrances fees to visited sites and museums in Istanbul, including Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and Chora Museum
  • An exploration of Edirne, a UNESCO World Heritage site
