This self-paced certificate program allows students to work and attend school on their own schedule.

The faculty teaching these courses is the same online as on-campus, and students can transfer credits from other schools instead of retaking the class.

Colorado State University

CSU offers an online master’s degree in tourism management for those looking to make a career change or advance further in the industry.

This program focuses on developing students’ business management insight, helping them understand global tourism’s environmental and social impacts, and enhancing their knowledge of standard industry practices.

Furthermore, the faculty focuses on new technology, an evolving marketplace, and international events impacting tourism activities.

Throughout the nine-month program, students will learn more about financial management tools and processes, effective communication and marketing strategies, how to use data to guide business strategies, and how to manage resources and people ethically and strategically.

The program has 30 total credits and costs $794 per credit hour, regardless of if you live in-state or out-of-state.

Cruise Lines International Association

CLIA offers numerous online certification programs, including Accredited Cruise Counselor, Certified Cruise Counselor, Master Cruise Counselor, Elite Cruise Counselor, and Travel Agency Executive (TAE), a broader certification beyond cruises.

TAE was developed for management travel agency professionals currently employed by a CLIA Affiliate Agency and may be selling travel products.

To be eligible, candidates must work in a leadership capacity within the travel industry.

Those accepted into the program have two years from enrollment to complete the program and submit the required documentation.

The curriculum includes the following mandatory courses:

Penn Foster Career School

Penn Foster and Ashworth College typically frequent the same list as best online vocational schools.

Like Ashworth, Penn Foster boasts an excellent travel agent diploma.

If you are passionate about travel, the program prepares you to work for tour companies, cruise ships, airlines, and travel agencies.

Many graduates also opt to open a travel agency business or in a corporate travel position.

The travel agent course prepares students for the Travel Agent Proficiency certification exam.

The Travel Institute

Founded in 1964, The Travel Institute has granted just under 30,000 certifications since its founding.

The school has over 145 approved programs and has been awarded 3,600 scholarships since 2014.

The school offers a Certified Travel Associate (CTA) program, which covers 15 critical study areas developed to focus on the required skills for becoming a North American travel consultant.

To enroll in the program, candidates must have at least one year of industry experience selling travel products and services or pass the Travel Agent Proficiency exam with an 80 percent score.

To earn the certification, candidates must pass the CTA examination with at least a 70% score.

To maintain the certification, candidates must earn 10 continuing education units or more annually and be registered in the Certified Travel Agent Directory, which is a public document.

The skill modules range from travel insurance and planning itineraries to business ethics and business writing.

Best of all, the program can be taken entirely online in digital or digital plus print formats for those who prefer learning using physical materials.

The program offers peer support, one—on—one counseling, practice scenarios, and expert tips via videos from industry executives.

The digital version costs $550, while the digital plus print option costs $650.

NCFE Level 3 Travel & Tourism – the syllabus in brief

On the Travel and Tourism Level 3 Diploma, you’ll study how travel agencies operate, along with the package holiday industry. You’ll investigate how tourism events are organised and marketed, delve into the heritage and cultural tourism, study the impact that travel and tourism have on local communities, and much more!

Unit 1 - The UK travel and Tourism Industry

Do you know the main products and services offered within the UK travel and tourism industry? If not, then this unit will educate you. You’ll discuss all the ways to travel including road, rail, air and sea, along with describing the differences between serviced and non-serviced accommodation. You’ll also look at the extras offered to customers to enhance a travel package, and learn to identify trade associations, the services they offer, and their purpose.

Unit 2 - Customer Service in Travel and Tourism

This unit will help you identify examples of positive and negative customer service provided by travel and tourism organisations. You’ll find out how travel organisations’ policies and procedures manage customer service, and understand how performing great customer service has a positive impact. You’ll consider different techniques to perform great customer service and be able to recommend improvements to customer service on a selected travel and tourism organisation.

Unit 3 - Preparing for a Career in Travel and Tourism

Always dreamt of a career in travel and tourism? Great, this unit will prepare you for that. You’ll learn how to write a sell yourself on a CV or a personal profile that will shine bright in the travel and tourism industry. You’ll be able to assess your current skills against the skills you’ll need in the future by carrying out a skills audit, along with learning the knowledge needed to produce a professional standard application document. Finally, you’ll consider the ways to boost your interview chances, evaluate your performance, and be able to produce an action plan.

Unit 4 - Travel and Tourism Destinations

Within this unit, you’ll learn to identify UK, Europe and worldwide destinations, and you’ll then produce a travel brochure based on a selected location. You’ll research different types of travellers and tailor a destination recommendation based around them, their needs, and their desires. You’ll consider categories such as adults, families, adventure seekers, independent travellers, retired and eco-tourists, and be able to understand how each requires a diverse destination and tour offering.

Unit 5 - UK Visitor Attractions

Often people when visiting new places like to see what that destination has to offer with visitor attractions. During this unit you’ll consider man-made and natural visitor attraction and discover how they boost the appeal to customers. You’ll evaluate visitor management techniques used at an attraction destination and understand the effects of the attraction on the local community and area.

Unit 6 - Hospitality in Travel and Tourism

Travel and tourism and the hospitality industry often work hand-in-hand. During this unit you’ll explore the relationship between the two, and the products and services that can be offered. You’ll consider the ways that the needs and expectations can be met through hospitality providers for a range of customers.

Unit 7 - UK Tour Operations

During this unit you’ll get a better idea of the different types of operators, their functions, and the ways in which they sell. You’ll consider recent external factors and events, and the impacts they may have on tour operations.

Unit 8 - Travel Agency Operations

Within this unit, you’ll consider the range of travel agents in the market, and understand why customers may favour them over others. You’ll look at the differences between products and services in comparison to others on the market. Finally, you’ll learn the procedures, information sources, and legislation used by travel agents and be able to endorse products to potential customers.

Unit 9 - Marketing for Travel and Tourism

Marketing is fundamental to any business, after all it is the way in which people know about what they are doing, offering, and who they are! This unit will brush up on your marketing knowledge, covering influences of marketing activities and the marketing mix. You’ll carry out a market research activity to help you with developing a marketing campaign for a product or service, preparing promotional material to go with it.

Unit 10 - UK Passenger Transport Industry

Do you really understand the UK passenger transport industry? Inside this unit, you’ll develop your knowledge, and better understanding the structure, range of facilities, and the services within it. You’ll be able to understand factors that influence the industry including technology, changes in demand, political and legal factors, and many more. You’ll also research the travel options for more complex journeys and produce itineraries for them.

Unit 11 - UK Airports

Think about all the UK airports, where they are, and how busy they are. You’ll investigate UK airports and their income generation opportunities, discover the roles of UK airport-related regulatory bodies, health and safety, risk management and security hazards including, EASA, ICASO, IATA, and a whole lot more. Next, you’ll assess landside and airside career prospects within UK airports.

Unit 12 - Worldwide Passenger Airlines

Worldwide, there are a variety of airlines: some we may have heard of, some we may not. During this unit, you’ll discover the historical factors and the growth of the airline industry and its existing structure, understand the communications within an airport, the terminology used, and how they calculate flight times across worldwide time zones. You’ll consider the impact of external versions on the worldwide airline industry.

My 30-year stride in education started with childminding, to working with pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I then tutored in a national reading programme and went on to become a Higher-Level TA. I’m elated to say I graduated with a First-Class BA Honours Degree when I was 50 – living proof that it’s never too late to chase your dreams!

Marine biology, jellyfish conservationist, hairdresser, fitness instructor… I have an eclectic backstory! Art is my passion and one of my proudest moments was achieving my Masters in Fine Art. I then requalified as an Art teacher to share my knowledge with my students. For most of my career, I’ve supported vulnerable students with additional needs such as SEMH and SEN.

Online Travel Training reveals winners of Pop Awards 2024

Online Travel Training (OTT) has revealed the winners of the OTT Pop Awards 2024, recognising the most in-demand courses of 2023.

The training provider has also named six travel professionals as ‘OTT Gurus’ after their dedication to learning last year.

The most popular course across all categories was ‘Hilton Hotels and Resorts, Dubai’, while Clarity Business Travel’s Molly Ritchie was the Guru who completed the most courses – she finished a total of 206 courses last year.

OTT managing director Julia Feuell said: “My congratulations to all the popular courses and thanks to everyone who took the time to take these courses to improve their product knowledge and sales skills.”

It is the second year in a row that a hotel course had been named as the most popular, with Atlantic, The Palm coming out on top in last year’s awards.

“As OTT announces these awards based on course data, we just never know which course will be top,” said Feuell.

She added: “Behind the most popular courses are often the most active brands, who work hard to engage the travel trade with tantalising fam trips or prizes as well as keep them up to date with the latest news, product launches and event invites.”

In addition to Ritchie, this year’s OTT Gurus are: Vanessa Cole, Hays Travel (164 courses); Samantha Grow, Grow Through Travel (148 courses); Liberty Wilson, Scenic Travel (146 courses); Kerry Elliot, Travelling Dreams affiliated with Inteletravel (89 courses); and Isla Stenning, Hays Travel (78 courses).

Ritchie joined Clarity Business Travel in May last year, having previously risen through the ranks at a hotel. She gained an ‘A’ in the HND travel and tourism course she took at the City of Glasgow College from 2019-2021.

“My career has just started in the tourism industry and I am very excited to see what comes,” she said. “I will keep on developing my skills and knowledge, I will keep meeting incredible people, I will keep experiencing amazing opportunities, I will keep gaining achievements and I will work my way up within the industry.”

She added: “As you can see from the 206 courses I have completed, I really enjoy OTT training. It’s fun, interactive, interesting and always available.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, travel agents earn an average income of $43,810 per year ($21.06 per hour). Top-earning travel agents (90th percentile) earn over $74,220 annually. This occupation has an expected growth rate of 20% by 2031, much faster than the average growth rate for all professions (5%). This translates into 7,500 openings for travel agents every year.

What does a travel agent do?

Based on information provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, travel agents sell transportation, lodging, and admission to entertainment activities to individuals and groups planning trips. They offer advice on destinations, plan trip itineraries, calculate total costs, and make travel arrangements for clients.

A travel agent's typical duties can include anything from organizing travel for business and vacation clients (planning and arranging tour packages, excursions, and day trips) to giving details on required documents, such as passports and visas, and on complying with cross-border entry requirements, such as health and safety protocols. Travel agents also describe trips to clients, advise about local customs and attractions, book reservations for travel, hotels, rental cars, and special events, and make alternative booking arrangements if changes arise before or during a trip.

What is a certified travel agent?

A certified travel agent has earned one of the available industry certifications, such as Certified Travel Associate (CTA) or Certified Travel Counselor (CTC). While they are not required to work in the industry, travel agent certifications can add prestige to your resume. When considering a CTA certification, it is necessary to first obtain the TAP certification. This course covers the fundamental knowledge necessary for this certification and serves as a solid foundation for your CTA certification journey.

Does this course prepare you for a certification?

The Travel Agent Training course will prepare you to sit for the TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test, offered by the Travel Institute (formerly ICTA), the registration fee for this test is included with this course. The Travel Agent Proficiency or TAP test is the first step towards professional recognition. The test allows students to demonstrate that they have mastered the basics of the travel industry – selling skills, basic geography, and the items/products sold by travel counselors.

When can I start the course?

This course is open enrollment, so you can register and start the course as soon as you are ready. Access to your course can take 24-48 business hours.

How long does it take to complete this course?

This course is self-paced and open enrollment, so you can start when you want and finish at your own pace. When you register, you'll receive six (6) months to complete the course.

What if I don't have enough time to complete my course within the time frame provided?

The time allotted for course completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours. However, if you are unable to complete the course, contact the student advising team to see what options you may have available to work out a suitable completion date. Please note that an extension fee may be charged.

What kind of support will I receive?

Our courses are designed to accommodate various learning preferences. Depending on the course structure, you may get different forms of support. Self-paced courses are designed to be user-friendly and independent, minimizing the need for external support. In courses with instructors, our direct platform support feature includes opportunities for questions, discussions, and remediation, with email and phone support available for select courses. Our student advising team is available to guide you on program requirements and administrative requests, but they do not provide assistance with course content. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary support for success, whether it's through self-paced exploration, direct communication, or guidance from our advising team.

What happens when I complete the course?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a certificate of completion. In addition, you will receive an exam voucher for the TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test, offered by the Travel Institute (formerly ICTA), after successful completion of the course and financial obligation.

Am I guaranteed a job?

This course will provide you with the skills you need to obtain an entry-level position in most cases. Potential students should always do research on the job market in their area before registering.

Can I get financial assistance?

This course is non-credit, so it does not qualify for federal aid, FAFSA and Pell Grant. In some states, vocational rehab or workforce development boards will pay for qualified students to take our courses. Additionally, some students may qualify for financial assistance when they enroll, if they meet certain requirements. Financing is available from select schools.
