Fatima statue on global pilgrimage to visit over a dozen parishes

Statue will tour archdiocese through early june.

Over a dozen parishes of the Archdiocese of Newark will host one of the Pilgrim Statues of Our Lady of Fatima — which have traveled the world on a mission to spread peace and hope since 1947 — during its archdiocesan tour from April 28 through June 7.

Once transported from the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal, the statue will be on display for veneration at St. Pius X Parish in Old Tappan from April 28 through May 1. The figure will then visit 18 other churches throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties. Each church will offer initiatives related to the veneration of Our Lady. For example, St. Pius X Parish will celebrate a Mass in her name on Saturday, April 29, at 9 a.m., after which people will be invited to pray the rosary every 90 minutes until the 4:30 p.m. vigil.

To commemorate Our Lady of Fatima’s first apparition on May 13, 1917, a procession will commence from Newark’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Saturday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. and travel to Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. There, the statue will be presented for veneration, followed by a Mass dedicated to Our Lady at 5 p.m. and a special reflection at 7 p.m. The reflection will be delivered by Ricardo Casimiro, co-leader of the statue’s pilgrimage and campus minister at Montclair State University. Casimiro has made 40 visits to Portugal’s Shrine of Fatima as part of his studies on Our Lady.

“I’m very excited the statue is coming to the Archdiocese — it’s been my dream to bring her here for a long time,” said Casimiro, who received the Shrine of Fatima’s Centennial Medal in 2017 due to his commitment to Our Lady. “Her presence here reminds us that we’re never alone. Our Lady is always with us in our suffering and our moments of joy. So, visiting the statue is a chance to renew our faith and find hope for the future.”

The archdiocesan tour of the statue is intended for parishioners to thank Our Lady for her protection during the COVID-19 pandemic and to request her intercession amidst current global conflicts. It is also meant to generate excitement for the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day festival, which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from Aug. 1-6.

This year the Archdiocese of Newark — with the supervision of Casimiro and Father Kevin Kilgore, pastor of St. Pius X Church in Old Tappan — is sending 43 youths on a pilgrimage to participate in the festival, during which they will visit the Shrine of Fatima. To prepare them for this journey and encourage all young people to foster a relationship with Our Lady, Casimiro will lead a catechetical program at Montclair State’s Newman Catholic Center on Sunday, May 7, starting at 5 p.m. Afterward, a Mass dedicated to Our Lady will be celebrated by Father Jim Chern, director of campus ministry for the Archdiocese and Montclair State. Students from all four archdiocesan universities have been invited to attend.

“The statue is a beautiful article of faith,” said Father Kilgore, co-leader of the statue pilgrimage who will celebrate Mass at the Shrine of Fatima before bringing the statue to the Archdiocese. “It’s traveled all over the world. Millions of people have prayed before her over the years. And many more wish they could visit her, but she’ll be with us because the Lord wants her to be here. The Lord wants us to see her and grow our devotion. It’s all divine grace.”

Our Lady of Fatima

Our Lady of Fatima is a Marian apparition who appeared to three shepherd children in Cova da Iria, Portugal, on six occasions between May and October of 1917. During her initial appearances, Mary showed three prophetic visions to the children and urged them to pray the rosary daily for world peace and sinners’ salvation. During her final apparition on Oct. 13, thousands of people observed what is now known as the Miracle of the Sun — the sight of the sun zig-zagging through the sky.

Three decades later, the original Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was created by sculptor Jose Ferreira Thedim using a detailed description provided by one of the children who saw her, Sister Lucia dos Santos. This statue was eventually duplicated multiple times, and the pieces have traveled across the world to bring Our Lady to those who cannot visit the Shrine of Fatima.

The tour, sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA, was launched from the National Blue Army Shrine, in the Diocese of Metuchen, NJ, precisely on March 21, the date chosen by the Fatima Shrine in Portugal to mark the anniversary of the Apparitions of the Angel.

The statue is to travel to parishes, schools, military chapels, and other venues along the tour, with programming to include Masses, confession, talks on Fatima, Holy Hours of Adoration, rosaries and private veneration. The goals are to allow Our Lady of Fatima to claim her dominion over America through her Immaculate Heart, and to bring the urgent Message of Fatima—the Peace Plan from Heaven—to a world in need. It also encourages devotion through personal consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was the mission given to Lucia by Our Lady and Our Lord. Our Lady of Fatima statue to tour Newark Archdiocese throughout May

Our Lady of Fatima New Jersey

By Joe Bukuras

Boston, Mass., May 1, 2023 / 12:45 pm

One of the replicas of the original Our Lady of Fatima statue will be touring the Archdiocese of Newark from April 28 to May 31. It was crafted using detailed instructions from Servant of God Sister Lucia Dos Santos, one of the three Fatima seers.

One of only 13 copies in the world, the statue is typically housed at the Shrine of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal, where the Marian apparitions of Fatima, Portugal, originally occurred, Jaimie Winters, a spokesperson for the archdiocese, told CNA.

The archdiocese is sponsoring the tour so that parishioners may be able to thank Mary for her protection throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and ask for global conflicts to end, the Jersey Catholic reported. The statue will be on display at 13 parishes throughout the archdiocese, the first being St. Pius X Parish in Old Tappan from April 28 to May 1.

The next parish to receive the Our Lady of Fatima statue will be St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Bloomfield from May 1–3. It will then go to Holy Trinity Epiphany Church in Newark from May 3–4, then on to Holy Family Parish in Nutley from May 5–7, Newman Catholic Center at Montclair State University in Montclair on May 7, and St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny from May 8–9. The full schedule of destinations and dates can be found here .

Each parish that hosts the statue will offer special devotions to Our Lady. According to the Jersey Catholic, St. Pius X Parish planned to have participants pray the rosary every 90 minutes between the Saturday morning Mass at 9 a.m. on April 29 and the 4:30 p.m. vigil.

In honor of Mary’s first appearance to the three shepherd children on May 13, 1917, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will be hosting a procession with the statue on May 13, which will go from the church to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The statue will remain at the cathedral for veneration until the 5 p.m. Mass that day.

On May 13, 1917, Mary first appeared to the three shepherd children Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco in Fatima, Portugal. When she appeared, she was dressed in white and holding a rosary. She brought the message of prayer, repentance, and reparation for sin, which occurred seven times through October 1917.

In her last appearance to all three of the children together on Oct. 13, 1917, tens of thousands of pilgrims witnessed what is known as the “ miracle of the sun ,” which Mary gave to the children and to the people as a sign that the apparitions were authentic. More about the miracle can be read here .

In 1947, the first pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima was created following the instructions of Sister Lucia — the same Lucia who was a seer as a child and later went on to join religious life. The statue, and its subsequent copies, have traveled the world spreading the message of peace, prayer, and love.

According to the Fatima Shrine’s website, the original statue remains at the Shrine of Fatima and doesn’t travel anymore except in extraordinary circumstances. Instead, the 13 special replicas continue to make tours, allowing Catholics in many dioceses to come together in prayer under Our Lady of Fatima’s patronage.

Sacred statue of Our Lady of Fatima arrives in New Jersey on worldwide pilgrimage

By Kristie Keleshian

April 28, 2023 / 6:36 PM EDT / CBS New York

OLD TAPPAN, N.J. -- A sacred statue within the Catholic Church is on a worldwide pilgrimage and has just arrived in New Jersey.

She comes in peace. Greeted with cheers, Our Lady of Fatima was carefully wheeled into St. Pius X Catholic Church in Old Tappan before the lady in white was adorned with her golden crown and rosary beads.

"So we thought why not bring the statue of Fatima here to give some hope to the youth, especially after all this pandemic and some dark nights and suffering," said Ricardo Casimiro, campus minister of Newman Catholic at Montclair State University.

Our Lady of Fatima represents Mary, the mother of Jesus. An apparition of her was reported to be seen by three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in may of 1917.

Clergy members from St. Pius X in Old Tappan organized the statue's arrival from Portugal and her tour across over a dozen Catholic churches within the Archdiocese of Newark.

"This is just a microcosm of what God is doing for our parish," said Fr. Kevin Kilgore.

A procession will take place on May 13 before the statue's arrival to Newark's Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It'll mark the 106th anniversary of the apparition's first sighting by the children in Fatima, Portugal. Thousands are expected to attend.

"With the statue of Our Lady to my knowledge, yes, it's been a very long time since she's been in the U.S., if ever, so we were really honored to receive her," Kilgore said.

The statue of Our Lady has made her pilgrimage across the world since 1947. Rosemarie Lofreddo, from Old Tappan, joined the statue on her journey to her hometown.

"It is an experience, it's the first of its kind for me, and it was heartwarming and inspiring and made us all feel closer to each other," she said.

The statue will be at St. Pius X Catholic Church through Monday, May 1, before making her next stop at Bloomfield's St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Hundreds of Catholics walked with the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima through Newark’s streets during a May 13, 2023, procession organized by the Archdiocese of Newark.

A Mother’s Day procession with a pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima drew hundreds to the streets of Newark, New Jersey. The Catholic display came in honor of the 106th anniversary of the first apparition of Fatima on May 13, 1917, and begins a time of pilgrimage in New Jersey that will last until June.

Between May and October of 1917, an apparition of the Blessed Mother appeared before three children of Cova da Iria, Portugal, on six occasions.

The statue of Our Lady of Fatima was created by Jose Ferreira Thedim, based on a detailed description provided by one of the children. Thedim went so far as to make duplicates of the statue meant to travel the world on a pilgrimage of peace.

The statue first came to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church from Portugal for its tour of the Archdiocese of Newark, with 27 stops planned throughout New Jersey. The Mother’s Day procession began at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and took a circuitous route past the city’s major landmarks. The procession took three-and-a-half hours to complete, with no stops along the way, while Our Lady was carried alternately on the shoulders of marchers and atop an antique fire engine requisitioned for the day.

Those in procession prayed and sang hymns throughout the march, ending at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. There, they celebrated a Mass led by Father Kevin Kilgore, co-leader of the statue pilgrimage and pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Old Tappan, before the statue of Our Lady. Afterward, those present were treated to a presentation on Our Lady of Fatima’s significance in today’s world from pilgrimage co-leader and Montclair State University campus minister Ricardo Casimiro.

Casimiro is an expert on Fatima, who has made a study of the early 20th-century apparitions and estimates that he has visited Fatima some 40 times in his studies of Our Lady. He said in his presentation:

“Our Lady of Fatima is here to give us a sign of peace and hope amidst so much struggle. The message of Fatima reflects on that. She walks with us through Newark, giving us the strength we need. This is a sign that she is always with us in our sufferings and our needs. So, bringing her to the Cathedral is bringing the message of Fatima in this new language of peace.”

The statue of Our Lady of Fatima will remain in New Jersey until June 10, visiting the Archdiocese’s local parishes, where it will remain for two to three days at each one. Parishes will provide opportunities for the faithful to visit the statue, as well as incorporating it into events and Masses. It will last visit St. Pius X Parish in Old Tappan, where Auxiliary Bishop Michael A. Saporito will celebrate a Mass on Saturday, June 10, at 4:30 p.m.

The National Blue Army Shrine

The National Blue Army Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a Catholic Shrine dedicated to the message of Our Lady of Fatima located in Washington, NJ.

The Blue Army Shrine is operated by the World Apostolate of Fatima USA,  a public association of the faithful. This Apostolate is the only Catholic organisation in the world authorised by the Church to learn, live and spread the message of Our Lady of Fatima .

Our Lady came to Fatima to save the souls of her children from hell in the eternal order, and to bring peace to their world in the temporal.

The core of her message can be expressed in three simple sentences:

  • Addressing the eternal order, she told us that hell exists and that souls are being lost to it because there is no one to make reparation for their sins.
  • Speaking of the temporal, she said that war is a consequence of sin.
  • The salvation of souls and the attainment of world peace require the conversion of sinners. “ People must stop offending God because He is already so much offended .” [10-13-1917]

Almost everything else she said, the things she asked us to do, and her prophecies predicated on the nature of our response relate, either directly or indirectly, to these three fundamental elements.

The Blue Army Shrine

The roof of the Shrine represents Mary’s mantle flowing over and protecting her children. The bronze statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary holding out the Rosary and the Scapular rises 145 feet from the chapel level. The heart of the Shrine is our Eucharistic Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on the lower level.

THE HOLY HOUSE The Holy House was dedicated in 1973 and is the heart of the Our Lady of Fatima Retreat Center. The original Holy House, the home of the Holy Family is enshrined in Loreto, Italy. Stones from the actual Holy House in Italy were pulverized and added to the mortar used to construct the Holy House Chapel. The Chapel is the same size as the original Holy House and is constructed similarly. Sister Lucia’s last vision is replicated in the Chapel, and a wood statue of St. Joseph as he appeared at Fatima during the Miracle of the Sun is also there greeting pilgrims. Pope John XXIII had a sign placed above the Holy House in Loreto saying, “This is the holiest place on earth.”

THE CAPELINHA The Capelinha at the Shrine is one of only two exact replicas of the Chapel built at Fatima on the site of Our Lady’s apparitions. “Capelinha” is a Portuguese word meaning “little chapel.” In her August 1917 apparition at Fatima, Our Lady requested that a chapel be built on the spot where she appeared. The Pilgrim Virgin Statue in the Capelinha at the Shrine is a replica of the miraculous Pilgrim Virgin Statue carried in procession at Fatima. It was generously donated by the Catholic Portuguese community.

Our Lady’s Fatima Requests

  • Daily offer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the sacrifices demanded by the  duties required of your state in life, as well as whatever hardships and difficulties God permits to touch your life, in reparation for your own sins, for the sins of others, and for the conversion of all sinners. In other words, “offer it up.” This expression which so many of us were taught by our parents isn’t heard much these days. Sister Lucia considered the living out of this disposition the most fundamental and important practical, everyday response to Fatima.
  • Pray part of the Rosary daily while meditating on the Mysteries in reparation for sin, for the conversion of sinners, and for world peace.
  • Wear the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel as both a sign and a reminder of your consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and as a protection against the snares of Satan.
  • Practice the devotion of the Communion of Reparation on the first Saturday of each month which has come to be popularly known as the 1st Saturday Devotion .
  • Contribute to the establishment of devotion to The Immaculate Heart of Mary in the world by spreading the Message of Fatima to others.
The honouring of all of these requests taken collectively and derivatives thereof  constitutes the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary which Our Lady told Lucia God desired.

Our Blessed Mother Joins the Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Pilgrim statue tour kicks off in Month of Mary, in journey to Eucharistic Congress.

Children pray before the pilgrim statue.

To highlight a strong Marian aspect of the National Eucharistic Revival during the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA is holding a “Eucharistic Revival Statue Tour” that will travel from the East Coast to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, arriving on July 16.

“This is our contribution to the Eucharistic Revival. We wanted Mary to pave the way for her Eucharistic Son, who’s coming across the country,” Barbara Ernster, the World Apostolate of Fatima USA/Blue Army’s national coordinator for this tour, told the Register. “Mary always points us to her Son.”

While the official “Seton Route” of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage begins on May 18-19 at St. Mary Church, part of Blessed Michael McGivney parish in New Haven, Connecticut, with an opening Mass followed by a Eucharistic procession, a week earlier on May 10-11, the Blue Army’s companion Eucharistic Revival Statue Tour begins 22 miles away at St. Theresa Church in Trumbull. From this start, the next stop will be the National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Washington, New Jersey, for the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, May 13, before the pilgrimage continues through several states along the route to Indiana’s capital.

“We tried to stay as close to the Seton Route as possible. We’re going a week ahead because we don’t want to interfere with the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and the things they are doing because they have their own itinerary,” Ernster said of the companion launch in Connecticut.

Mary Paves Way for the Eucharist

Tim Glemkowski, executive director of the Eucharistic Revival Congress, said in a letter of support that the pilgrim statue processions will “visibly demonstrate Our Blessed Mother’s accompaniment of this Eucharistic Revival journey the Church is undertaking collectively. The Eucharistic Revival, in my view, is distinctly Marian in its heart, part of the work of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts to heal, convert, form and unify the Church so that it can be sent on mission ‘for the life of the world.’ Our Blessed Mother never obscures her Son, but invites all to behold and know Him fully.”

“It only makes sense that Mary would be a big part of any Eucharistic procession,” Father Brian Gannon, pastor of St. Theresa Church, told the Register, as he drew the inseparable connections between the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother. He first emphasized that the Incarnation “occurred in the womb of the Blessed Mother,” adding, “Then every time Mass is celebrated and the Eucharist is confected, the flesh and the blood become manifest on the altar. So the beautiful parallel between our Blessed Mother and the intimate connection with her and the Most Holy Eucharist is the Word became flesh and dwelt among us first in her womb, and the Word continues to become flesh on the altar.”

Father Gannon explained how the parish’s perpetual adoration chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima continuously brings together the Eucharistic, Marian and Fatima messages. When the chapel was being built, the inclusion of a large painting of Sister Lucia’s vision of the Most Holy Trinity, which includes the Eucharistic and Marian connection, was planned.

“A big part of the reason why we did that was thinking about the angel appearing to the children in 1916 and emphasizing reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist. Then the children even received the Eucharist from the angel,” Father Gannon said. “That was extraordinary.”

“The message of Fatima is timeless and relevant and critical because it’s a call to reverence,” he added, furthering the connection. “It starts with reverence for the Eucharist, but then it’s a call to penance and a repentance of sin, which is, of course, what the Gospel is. The Holy Eucharist is central to a reconversion of the world and a reconversion of individual souls.”

A young girl prays before the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Reparation, Renewal and Return

For the statue tour, the World Apostolate of Fatima is also including a “Let’s Pray Them Back” campaign, asking people all over the country to send in the names of the people they are praying for to return to the Church. Several hundred petitions from around the country have already rolled in.

“These petitions will be traveling with the statue along the way for all these Eucharistic adoration nights,” Ernster said. “And the parishes themselves will be asking parishioners to bring the names of people they are praying for, and then they will do a Eucharistic reparation together to pray for these people [to come] back to the Church. Throughout the tour, these names will be prayed for. We’re trying to do Eucharistic reparation to pray people back to the Church.” These petitions will be placed in the Immaculate Heart of Mary and carried to the National Eucharistic Congress .

Host parishes along the tour will offer prayer and “ night vigils of Eucharistic reparation ” for the return of fallen-away and marginal Catholics.

“The foundation of our faith is our belief in the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament,” David Carollo, executive director for the WAF/Blue Army, said in a statement. “The foundation of the Fatima message is Eucharistic reparation. This is where the Angel of Peace at Fatima directed us more than a century ago. Mary accompanying her Son on this journey to Indianapolis is a reaffirmation of this.”

Father Gannon also emphasized this indispensable aspect: “It’s so critical that we raise consciousness in Catholics about the power and the glory of the Holy Eucharist because that’s where they experience Christ at the most powerful divine encounter on earth. The more that we can help Catholics to really understand the Eucharist, the more and more the world can be transformed, basically, through the grace of Almighty God. The Eucharist is central to everything … central to all of reality, because it’s the uncreated God becoming flesh all over again in every single Mass throughout the world. This is God’s original plan: that we were always meant to become in union with him and intimate with him.”

He said that the fact so many people have strayed from Mass is part of the reason why there’s so much confusion and rage in the world today: “The remedy is always Jesus Christ, and central to his remedy is reverence, love and proper partaking of the Most Holy Eucharist.”

Thus far, from Connecticut and New Jersey on May 13, the statue tour will be making stops in several churches in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Baltimore/Washington D.C., Ohio and Indiana. Ernster pointed out that this pilgrimage will be joining the walking part of pilgrimage as it comes to St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen, New Jersey, May 27-28.

For those not near one of the stops, the Blue Army urges people to join in by making a Holy Hour of reparation to the Heart of Jesus on their own, or a church can host a “ Night of Love ” vigil of reparation for the parish community.

Ernster said that at the Eucharistic Congress, the Pilgrim Virgin statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be given a place of honor and will be there for veneration during the youth and family Masses each morning.

Father Gannon summarized the importance of this pilgrimage and the Marian-Eucharistic connection by emphasizing: “Mary always brings us to Jesus, and she always points to Jesus. And all the great saints had a great devotion to Mary. Mary is inseparable from the Most Holy Eucharist. So the more we venerate Mary, the more the Eucharist will manifest greater power in our lives, too, because we’re reverencing the Mother of God, and Jesus is only going to grant us more graces.”
