The name of Ovo means "egg" in Portuguese. This goes with the show's theme of the life cycle and birth of insects. It also represents the underlying threat of the show. The logo for Ovo is made to look like the head of an insect with the "O"s looking like eyes and the "V" looks like the head and antennas. [1]

History [ ]

In late April 2011, Ovo canceled performances from April 28th through May 1st in Coney Island, Cincinnati, Ohio. This was due to the Ohio River over flooding with heavy rains. Performances resumed on May 3rd to May 15th. [2]

On April 2015, Cirque du Soleil announced the cancellation of Ovo and Toruk: The First Flight's performances in North Carolina due to the passing of The Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act or HB2 by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory . [3] [4] [5]

In a press release on Facebook, the company stated: "Cirque du Soleil strongly believes in diversity and equality for every individual and is opposed to discrimination in any form. The new HB2 legislation passed in North Carolina is an important regression to ensuring human rights for all... Cirque du Soleil believes in equality for all. It is a principle that guides us with both our employees and our customers. We behave as change agents to reach our ultimate goal of making a better world with our actions and our productions." [6]

In 2016 while converting to an arena format, Cirque du Soleil teamed up with their video and scenographic design subdivision 4U2C to improve on the show's design, lighting, technical aspects, special effects, and projections. [7]

Set and Technical Information [ ]

OvoStage

Set designer Gringo Cardia was inspired by the nests and colonies of various insects when designing the stage for Ovo . The stage floor contains 225 panels and with the exception of the Spider’s Web , there are no straight lines found anywhere on set. The middle of the stage is able to be raised and rotated. The acrobatic structure used during the Slackwire Act is at a 45° degree angle. The structure can be raised to 15 ft. and weighs over 22,000 Lbs. [8]

The giant egg at the beginning of Ovo is a symbol of fertility and is a nod to The Monolith in the Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey . [1] The egg measures 28 ft. x 22 ft. and is inflatable.

The largest set element for Ovo is the trampowall located at the back of the stage. The wall measures 30 ft x 60 ft. The performers can climb up the wall and bounce off of it. It is also used as a giant projection screen

Another large element used in Ovo is the large mechanical flowers that grow during the Legs Dance Interlude and the Finale. These flowers are 30 ft. tall. [8]

When adapting Ovo to the arena format in 2016, Cirque du Soleil partnered up with their subdivision 4U2C to make several changes to the show. 4U2C created a scale model of a miniature forest to create projections for the trampowall. The miniature forest is 24 ft. X 8 ft. and contains real and fake plants. [7] The photography of the forest was shot using macro photography to show details of the scale model. It took 40 days of shooting of the minute forest for the content for the projections. A completely new stage and acrobatic structure had been made for OVO arena tour. [8]

Costume Design [ ]

Costume designer Liz Vandal used her signature styles inspired by futuristic superheroes and by various suits of armor when creating the costumes for Ovo. She was also inspired, by fashion designer Pierre Cardin and slashed sleeves of Renaissance garments. Vandal wanted to focus on insect-like costumes rather than copy insect anatomy. Vandal used Japanese designer Issey Miyake's permanent pleating technique to develop certain rigidity to material and creates an organic effect. [1]

Most of the characters have two different versions of the same costume. One costume is more lightweight and functional. This costume is used by the actors for performances. The second costume is heavier and more detailed. This is for when the actors are on stage not performing. [1]

Ovo's music is composed by Berna Ceppas. The music was influenced by the sounds of Bossa Nova, samba, funk, and electronic music. Ceppas sampled insect sounds to be mixed in the music. [1]

Cirque du Soleil - OVO

February 13th-16th 2025.

Cirque du Soleil returns to the NOW Arena with its newly revisited high-energy and high-acrobatic production, OVO. An exciting  Cirque du Soleil  experience, OVO is a colorful intrusion into a new day in the life of insects; a non-stop riot of energy and movement. Through show-stopping acrobatics highlighting the unique personalities and abilities of selected insect species, OVO explores the beauty of biodiversity in all its contrasts and vibrancy.

Thursday, Feb 13th at 7:00 PM

Friday, Feb 14th at 7:00 PM

Saturday, Feb 15th at 3:00 PM

Saturday, Feb 15th at 7:00 PM

Sunday, Feb 16th at 1:00 PM

Sunday, Feb 16th at 5:00 PM

OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It's love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye - and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.

The name OVO means “egg” in Portuguese. This timeless symbol of the life cycle and birth of numerous insects represents the underlying thread of the show. Graphically, OVO hides an insect in its name: The two “Os” represent the eyes while the letter “V” forms the nose.

Complicity with the world of insects

Liz Vandal, the costume designer for OVO has a special affinity for the world of the insects. “I’ve always had passion for them,” she says. “When I was just a kid I put rocks down around the yard near the fruit trees and I lifted them regularly to watch the insects who had taken up residence underneath them. I petted caterpillars and let butterflies into the house. So when I learned that OVO was inspired by insects, I immediately knew that I was in a perfect position to pay tribute to this majestic world with my costumes.”

Liz has a signature style inspired by futuristic superheroes and by suits of armour from all eras. These two sources inform her designs for the OVO costumes. Flattering lines and an elongated, corseted look are a nod to the world of super heroes while the segmented shells on many of the garments alternate between hard and soft, much like the armour and the bodies of knights in the Renaissance.

Evocation rather than imitation

Liz’s first challenge was to imagine a way to evoke insect without copying their actual anatomy. “The solution was to connect with the feeling of being face to face with a spider, a cockroach or a butterfly,” she explains. “Then I made detailed drawings of designs that interpreted their morphology. For example, the dragonfly’s wings are evoked by pants made of veined lace, and the mosquito’s stinger by a ‘Mohawk’ of fine red stems. The idea of the shell also became a metaphor, since the word ‘insect’ refers to ‘sections’. This revelation consolidated my approach.”

Organic/Synthetic

Liz drew on the wealth of experience and know-how of Cirque’s costume shop to put it all together. “Together we developed techniques of pleating fabrics to provide three-dimensional muscle, volumes and shells,” she says. “The result is a sort of organic origami. The most obvious example of that is the crickets’ costumes. The team also explored the textures of wings and shells using the sublimation technique to poeticize them and give them an evocative texture.”

In a play of colors and patterns, Liz implemented variations on a theme by incorporating thin lines on the ants and crickets, and pleated abstract transparent outfits for the dragonflies. She also used materials to suggest insects’ shells, and lacy fabrics for the wings and soft sections of their bodies. To enable certain characters such as the mosquito to move, she placed sections of shell within other sections, which open and close to reveal the soft body inside.

Crickets – symbols of the colony

Ten crickets are the key insects in the show. At times, they have detachable legs that break away from their bodies, which the impression that there is an insect invasion going on. “I have a particular soft spot for these characters,” she says, “because their costumes are so sexy, graphic and vibrant.”

The Foreigner is a character who lands in the middle of OVO. He is a fly in vintage suit who only reveals his true nature when he falls for The Ladybug. After his transformation, he wears a costume of bristling spines. His lanky, angular form contrasts with the roundness of The Ladybug.

Sources of inspiration

Liz Vandal took her inspiration from many sources, including certain fashion designers such as Pierre Cardin, who focused on graphic lines and geometric shapes. She was also inspired by the slashed sleeves of Renaissance garments.

Liz and her team in the costume shop have exploited the permanent pleating technique developed by Japanese designer Issey Miyake, which gives a certain rigidity to material and creates an organic effect. “We pushed this technique even further,” she says, “by printing on colored materials, sublimation and eroding the fabric not only to stiffen it, but also to give it a metallic sheen.”

SOME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Most characters have two versions of their costumes: the first, more lightweight and functional, for their acrobatic performance, and the second, more richly detailed and heavier, for their life in the community.
  • The initial cricket costumes required 75 hours of work each because of their complexity and the need to give them rigidity while maintaining the flexibility and expandability of the material.
  • Microscope photography of insects reveals that the materials used in the costumes are remarkably similar in structure to the bodies of insects.

Creating an organic space and interpreting nature

Designer Gringo Cardia drew inspiration from the structures that certain species of insect create when they establish nests and colonies.

Gringo has worked closely on many dance productions with OVO’s director Deborah Colker and they are used to a cross-pollination of ideas. He has contributed content to the show and she has brought ideas to the set design—neither approaches their role in isolation.

The overall setting of OVO is a stylized habitat that is home to the insects. At times it is a forest, at other times, a cave—or it could even be a house. Gringo’s objective was to create an organic environment that could lead to many other places.

The set elements: giant objects in a minuscule world

The show starts with a gigantic Egg on stage, obscuring much of the performance space from view. The mysterious object from the outside world is an inexplicable enigma in the eyes of the insects (and a nod to the monolith from the Kubrick film 2001). This timeless symbol of fertility and regeneration reappears in other forms later in the show, laid by the insects.

The largest set element is the Wall, which is set against the rear of the stage. The performers climb on it, disappear into it and use it as a stage, a platform and a launching pad.

At first, the Wall is concealed by two enormous “Skins” designed to create a sense of depth, and, through holes and openings, to reveal its secret life as a home to the insects as each of the Skins are removed in turn.

Art imitating life

There are almost no straight lines to be found anywhere in the set. True to the organic inspiration of the show, the Wall is curved, and so is the stage. But there is one exception: the Spider’s Web. Real spiders’ webs are made up of straight lines, so this is a case where art imitates life with a nod towards geometry. It is made of strong woven synthetic straps.

Giant props that evoke nature

An enormous 30-ft mechanical Flower appears on stage. The Flower blooms and becomes much more than an over scale prop, it’s a character in the show. Part sculpture, part puppet, part robot, it is seen from the insects’ point of view as a towering, inspiring feature of their environment.

To create the musical score for OVO, Berna Ceppas combined the sounds of bossa nova and samba with funk and electro music. And, as you might expect from a Brazilian – there is a lot of percussion in the score.

Berna Ceppas sampled actual insect sounds to combine with the music directly from the keyboard. He also assigned instruments and individual themes to specific characters.

The 7-piece band includes a bandleader/drummer, bass and double bass player, percussionist, violinist, wind instruments player, keyboard player, guitarist, plus one singer.

In almost all of Cirque du Soleil shows, the music is performed live. And, unlike musicals, the music needs to adapt to what is going on stage and not the other way around. To do so, the band leader, the musicians, the singers and the sound staff are in constant communication via headsets and microphones.

OVO is the 25th Cirque du Soleil live production created on the company’s 25th anniversary.

  • OVO first premiered in Montréal in April 2009 and has visited more than 30 cities in 6 different countries as a Big Top show before transforming in an arena show in 2016.
  • OVO celebrated its 2000th show in February 2015 in Fukuoka, Japan.

The Cirque du Soleil Review: OVO

The first time I heard of Cirque du Soleil was over thirty years ago when a tent went up in, I think, Santa Monica. It was the talk of the town, and everyone was doing whatever they could to get a seat inside that colorful tent. There was a long-hair flying man, swinging and soaring his muscular frame over our heads on long strips of silk hanging down from the center of that round stage, and he was an overnight sensation in an entertainment town that was filled to overflowing with celebrities. It was an exciting import from Montreal, and I was hooked.

I saw a few more shows, over the years, in tents set up in Battery Park and in a couple of Las Vegas casinos when my friends gathered together to celebrate my 40th birthday. The shows were always something to celebrate and get excited about. Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo is no different in that respect. This show, first premiering in Montréal in April 2009 and has toured more than 30 cities in 6 different countries as a Big Top show before transforming into an arena show in 2016, has popped itself up on Long Island at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY, and although I was very much missing the iconic tent that usually houses these spectaculars, the arena had everything we could have hoped for, including the easiest commute from New York City

ovo cirque du soleil tour

I was curious but not bubbling over with excitement like I had been before when I attended a Cirque du Soleil show, but what made this special is that my plus one was someone who had never seen one of the many Cirque du Soleil shows that seem to travel themselves all over North America and the World. It was hard to believe that I found a circus virgin, but it certainly made the event far more special.

The show starts with a gigantic Egg on stage, huge and obscuring much of the performance space from view. The mysterious object from the outside world is an inexplicable enigma in the eyes of the insects (and a nod to the monolith from the Kubrick film 2001) that disappears in f a flash, wowing the child within and those around me. Ovo , in a way, feels like a show aimed more towards children than adults. And there were numerous families seated all around us eating up every moment of this colorful insect-themed extravaganza. One young boy, seated somewhere behind me, fell in love with the word “color” and proceeded to, adoringly, say the word every time something amazed his eyes. The sentiment was infectious to the two of us, taking in his amazement and shifting our focus on the clowning aspect of the show that, to be honest, always wore me out a bit. I was there for the thrilling aerial and gymnastic displays, but this youngster added a different lens that enhanced the experience, more than I think I even realized at the time.

ovo cirque du soleil tour

The show is a bit more straightforward than many, trying a bit less to impose a more mystical narrative on the in-between moments. And even as it played up some pretty heteronormative acts of courtship and attraction between some goofy creatures and a large leg, the clowning seemed cute and harmless, albeit a tad pedestrian. Part of me wanted something more fascinating than a sassy simplistic ladybird playing hard to get, but it was hypnotizing these kids all around me, as it was intended.

With an army of grasshoppers and ants, dressed exotically in costumes by Liz Vandal, working hard as a totally efficient team of workers, the acts come, one after the other, forming circus moments that are meant to amaze and fill us with awe. The number of times the crowd gasped with wonder was uncountable, yet I always wonder, when watching a Cirque du Soleil show, whether we are actually cheering for the hardest or most difficult moments. Or are we just clapping for the ones that ‘seem’ the most difficult and sensational? I’d love to ask the performers, wondering if they might point out different, more complex moments in their acts that seem less difficult from the outside looking in, but are in fact very difficult and completely complex.

ovo cirque du soleil tour

In OVO , spiders swing through the air with the greatest of ease against a spectacularly designed backdrop filled with organic images and ever-evolving scenarios designed magically by Gringo Cardia with superb lighting by Eric Champoux, giving us stunning moments of creativity and dexterity that ignite our senses and wonderment. Cocoons unveil majestic butterflies, and scarabs fling themselves through the air. Creatures bounce themselves off walls returning to solid perpendicular structures that seem to be on different planes, defying gravity and our sense of balance. Other insects; butterflies and spiders, spring up from below, twisting themselves into positions on top of a climbing twisting framework of forms, or on a grey rock that excites the crickets, but causes my back to hurt. They throw themselves and others through the air, daring us to imagine the impossible by tumbling and flipping like bouncing fleas in somersaults that astound.

Directed by Brazilian choreographer, Deborah Coker, the parade of carnival athletics is more physical than contemporary dance, with a vocal performance that floats in and out beautifully, but not as often as I remember from other shows. OVO is a family-friendly astonishment, worthy of the wonderment of all the children that sat hypnotized by the acts of flexible courageous acrobatics, athleticism, and agility. If I hadn’t been with a newbie to Cirque du Soleil , or been surrounded by amazed (and well-behaved) children, I’m not sure I would have been as engaged as I was. I think I was spoiled when I saw “ O ” in Las Vegas, which I think was by far the most magical of Cirque du Soleil shows that I have seen. And although I missed the colorful tent experience, OVO was a spectacular worthy of the LIRR ride from Grand Central Station.

See behind the scenes of Cirque du Soleil’s ‘OVO’ at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis

B ackstage at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, hours before the opening performance of “OVO”, the dimly lit area buzzes with activity as performers warm up and crew members make final preparations. A locker room houses costume designers sewing wardrobe alterations. Smoke drifts up as a lighting technician solders equipment. Performers run through their routine on stage, perfecting their intricate movements.

As showtime approaches, hushed whispers are heard from the audience. Suddenly a spotlight illuminates a man dressed as a green grasshopper as he wanders excitedly around the floor. Soon the stage is filled with a variety of creatures in vibrant clothing and makeup, including beetles, spiders and ants.

The cast performs acrobatics on stage and in the air. A performer is thrown in the sky from one acrobat to another. She is caught perfectly, and the sound of applause fills the air.
