Pacific Pearl

Pacific Pearl made is debut in Australia at the end of 2010, but has already enjoyed many previous lives. The sixth and the oldest ship in the P&O Australia fleet, Pearl had a major refurbishment to refresh the amenities and redesign most of the public places. It now features the communal upmarket dining concept, The Pantry, replacing the traditional buffet dining. During the day, dress code is casual but at 5.30pm, the line requests guests wear “smart casual” attire. A P&O signature, Pacific Pearl also has theme nights like country and western, and ’60s rock ‘n’ roll. Tipping the crew is optional.

[fa type=”bed”] Accommodation

Of Pacific Pearl’s 773 cabins, only 64 have balconies. Accommodation is categorised as interior, ocean-view, standard balcony, deluxe balcony and mini suites. Standard amenities for all cabins including the suites, include a flat-screen TV, safe, hair dryer and a mini-fridge. Bathrooms have complimentary environmentally friendly toiletries. Bathrobe and slippers are available upon request for $29. Mini-suites passenger perks include priority embarkation and disembarkation, invitation to the senior officers’ cocktail party, fresh fruit and bottled water, bathrobes and slippers, an in-room Nespresso coffee machine and an iPod music system. After a 2012 refurbishment, Pacific Pearl has 10 pairs of interconnecting staterooms to accommodate bigger travelling groups.

[fa type=”cutlery”] Food

The Waterfront is Pacific Pearl’s main dining venue, a contemporary restaurant with an airy spacious ambience and tables accommodating from two to 10 people. Waterfront operates on a Your Choice Dining basis, allowing guests a more flexible dining time and seating. Casual buffet dining is offered at Plantation Restaurant, on deck 12. On the same deck is Salt Grill by Luke Mangan, and The Grill which serves “Aussie BBQ”. For a unique dining experience, guests can book a table at Chef’s Table, an exclusive dinner limited to 14 people a night. P&O Australia Cruises focuses on local ingredients and producers and feature products such as King Island Dairy cheeses from Tasmania and Australian grass-fed beef on their menu. Pacific Pearl also showcases Vanuatu-grown Tanna Coffee in its cafes, an initiative that financially benefits the communities and farmers on Tanna Island. Room service is also available.

[fa type=”ticket”] Activities

The Aqua HealthSpaFitness, one of the upgrade focus during Pacific Pearl’s dry dock, has a full-service menu of Elemis experiences, from massages, facials and acupuncture to teeth whitening. Aqua HealthSpaFitness also has a couple’s treatment room with a shower and Jacuzzi. The fitness centre offers health classes such as Pilates, yoga and boot camp as well as cardio and weight machines. At the stern of Pacific Pearl, Oasis, an intimate adults-only area with sun loungers, couches, two hot tubs and a bar.

[fa type=”group”] Families

Pacific Pearl, like all the ships in the P&O Australia fleet, is very family friendly with all sorts of activities catering to either the whole family, or different age groups. The ship has a minimum age to cruise (12 months) and kids’ clubs are open on a first-come first-served basis. Parents need to register their children for participation. Turtle Cove shows movies, hold scavenger hunts and talent shows and has a LEGO wall for kids aged two to six years. At Shark Shack seven- to 10-year-olds can play with Wii, Playstation and iPad. Teenagers can play with technology such as Stop Motion Pro Filmmaking, or enjoy the company of friends at themed parties all held at HQ. Group babysitting is available from 10.30pm to 1am at $5 per child per hour (additional child cost an extra $2 per hour). Parents of children aged three to six years are given pagers so they can check on them regularly.

Good value for families and multi-generatinal groups.

P&O Cruises Australia Prepares To Farewell Pacific Pearl

Friday, March 4, 2016

P&O Cruises Australia today announced a commercial arrangement has been reached to transfer Pacific Pearl from its fleet as part of an ongoing fleet expansion and renewal program.

The popular ship will be farewelled from the fleet in April 2017. By then, Pacific Pearl will have completed 294 separate cruises under the P&O Cruises‟ banner and will have carried more than half a million passengers over a period of more than five years‟ service.

P&O Cruises Australia President Sture Myrmell said Pacific Pearl had become a firm favourite with many guests in Australia and New Zealand during the 63,786-tonne superliner‟s time with the fleet.

However, the commercial transfer of the 1800-passenger ship is part of an unprecedented fleet renewal program for P&O Cruises, with the addition of Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden at the end of last year and Pacific Explorer due to join the fleet next year.

At the same time, P&O Cruises is making history in becoming the first cruise line to build a new ship specifically for the Australian market with the „newbuild‟ to be delivered in 2019.

After her P&O Cruises launch in December 2010, Pacific Pearl played a game-changing part in becoming New Zealand‟s first superliner, beginning with an eight-night cruise from Auckland to the South Pacific.

“In becoming a much loved passenger favourite, Pacific Pearl made a huge contribution to building the cruise category in the region particularly in New Zealand, introducing thousands of holidaymakers to the joys of cruising,” Mr Myrmell said.

“In addition to contributing to the growth of cruising in Australia, Pacific Pearl played a big part in growing the New Zealand season by more than 20 per cent over the past four years. This year, P&O Cruises is sailing from Auckland for a record 140 days.

“P&O Cruises remains the only cruise line to homeport from New Zealand and we are committed to the market. Following Pacific Pearl‟s farewell in 2017, Pacific Jewel will become New Zealand‟s ship and will sail from Auckland for two months from September 1 offering fantastic holidays to the Pacific Islands before returning again in 2018.”

Mr Myrmell said Pacific Pearl‟s departure was part of the ongoing evolution of the P&O Cruises‟ brand.

“Farewelling Pacific Pearl is a natural progression in which we are increasing the size of the fleet while redefining modern cruising in this part of the world. This is a very exciting time for P&O Cruises and our guests and is part of our long-term commitment to grow the cruise market.”

Pacific Pearl‟s last New Zealand cruise – a four night cruise to the Bay of Islands – will depart Auckland on 23 March, 2017. Her final P&O Cruises voyage will be a 16-day cruise to Singapore departing Auckland on March 27, 2017, which will provide an opportunity for Pacific Pearl's many fans to give her a celebratory farewell from the fleet.

With more than a year to go before Pacific Pearl exits the fleet, there are relatively few guests whose forward bookings will be subject to change and P&O will be assisting them to make alternative arrangements, including their choice of:

  • Rebooking on an equivalent or near equivalent cruise on another P&O Cruises Australia ship
  • Offering a choice of alternative cruises on other ships in the P&O Cruises Australia fleet where a near equivalent match is not possible
  • Providing a full refund to guests for whom no alternative cruise choice is suitable (any guest whose cruise is cancelled can choose to obtain a full refund).

Pacific Pearl will be transferred to a new fleet in April 2017. At their request, details of the new operators will remain confidential.

Pacific Pearl was originally launched in 1988 as the Sitmar FairMajesty by Chantiers de l’Atlantique for its client Sitmar Cruises. Sitmar Cruises, however, was purchased by P&O / Princess Cruises and the vessel was completed and named as Star Princess in 1989.

In 1997, Star Princess was transferred to P&O Cruises and renamed as MV Arcadia. The vessel was again renamed as Ocean Village when a brand of the same name was established in 2003 by Carnival Corporation. Ocean Village was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia as Pacific Pearl, which had its inaugural cruise from Auckland.

Pacific Pearl design and construction

The 63,500t Pacific Pearl has a length of 247m, beam of 32m and draught of 8.2m. It has 11 passenger decks, accommodating 1,800 guests. The vessel is installed with four diesel electric motors and can cruise at a speed of 21.5kts.

After completion of pre-fabrication works in July 2010 at Mivan’s manufacturing facility in Northern Ireland, the vessel underwent installation work in Singapore at Sembawang Shipyard, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine.

The work began in November and was carried out over 36 days. More than 1,800 people were engaged to deliver the ship in the week before Christmas.

The scope of work involved creation of new restaurants and bars such as the Salt Grill and Waterfront restaurants, Connexions and Oasis Bars and the Choc Café.

The vessel was given a complete change over by overhauling all areas of the 11 passenger decks. The hull was also given a new look through a repainting with the latest high-tech and eco-friendly silicone paint.

The pool deck is installed with a new, 7m wide and 4m high big television screen. The atrium of the ship was refitted into a multipurpose entertainment, cafe, bar and retail space.

Pacific Pearl also features a reverse osmosis (RO) plant and digital propulsion system.

Pacific Pearl staterooms

The size of the outside cabin is 17.5m² and features twin beds that can be converted into a queen-size bed. The rooms are provided with a TV, safety deposit box, AC with personal controls, telephone, fridge, wardrobe, drawers, writing desk, and a private en-suite with complementary toiletries and hair-dryer.

The outside cabin with balcony is 21.2m² and includes all the facilities and amenities of outside cabins. With a room size of 30.5m², the mini-Suite provides space for three people and also features a balcony. The inside cabin comes with a room size of 17.5m² and can accommodate two/four people.

Pacific Pearl facilities

Dining facilities include four restaurants and eight bars and lounges. The Blue Bar located on deck six serves as a refreshment centre.

The Panorama Deck, located on deck seven, features the Salt Grill, Oval Bar and Connexions Bar.

The Children’s Centre is located on deck 11. It includes a gaming room fitted with consoles. It is home to Turtle Cove, which offers supervised and entertaining activities for children aged three to six years old.

The Leisure Deck, located on deck 12, features the Splash Bar, pool, hot tubs and the Plantation Restaurant.

The Sun Deck, located on deck 14, provides space for cricket, basketball and golf. It also has a jogging track. A gym and the Aqua Health Spa Centre are located on deck two and a medical centre is located on deck four.

CMV’s New Flagship Columbus - The Ship Formally Known as Pacific Pearl

Posted: June 15, 2022

What was once one of Australia’s most admired cruise ships Pacific Pearl said farewell to the P&O Cruises Australia fleet in April 2017, after more than five years’ service, and carrying more than half a million passengers on 294 separate cruises.

She made her final voyage to Singapore for her three month transformation into Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) Columbus .

She has had an illustrious history built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique and launched in 1988 as Sitmar FairMajesty. Originally ordered for Sitmar Cruises the vessel first entered service with Princess Cruises as Star Princess in 1989. From 1997 to 2003, she sailed with P&O Cruises as Arcadia and renamed Ocean Village in 2003.After Ocean Village ceased operations, the vessel was renamed Pacific Pearl under P&O Cruises Australia fleet, where she sailed until June 2017.

Cruise & Maritime Voyages greeted their new flagship Columbus into their fleet on June 8 th 2017, at a dazzling naming ceremony at the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury . The 64,000 tonnes ship will carry up to 1400 guests (adults only) and will be voyaging year round from London – Tilbury.

The Godmother to Columbus, who named the ship at the ceremony, is TV personality Angela Rippon CBE . During the ceremony which was held in the spectacular Palladium show lounge, she expressed to charmed onlookers of the media, travel trade and VIP’s:

“I look forward to offering Columbus the same respect as my own godchildren.”
Chris Coates, Commercial Director at CMV said “When we introduced Magellan to our fleet just over two years ago, I suggested that it would be a game changer for us. Indeed it has been, and now we begin a new chapter as we proudly introduce our new flagship, Columbus, enabling us to respond to growing customer demand for traditional style cruising on board mid-sized cruise ships. The arrival of Columbus means we are on course to carry 100,000 passengers in 2018 cruising from the UK, which is 10% of the market.”

The three month transformation saw the children’s club converted into a lounge, library, card room and craft studio.

Columbus also has a Dome Observatory, wooden promenades, a classic British-themed pub and casino and three restaurants plus two cafes.

Amenities also comprise two heated swimming pools and large open decks with an open-air screen, plus a wellness centre and gym

Columbus set sail from Tilbury yes Sunday 11th June, on her maiden three night cruise to Amsterdam and Antwerp. In magnificent sunshine, a brass band and confetti cannons bid her bon voyage!

Pacific Jewel Review

Review of pacific jewel.

The 1990-built (as "Crown Princess") cruise ship MS Karnika was part of P&O Australia's fleet (as "Pacific Jewel") between 2009-2019. In 2019, the liner left P&O AU, with its final cruise departing from Melbourne on February 24th.

History - construction and ownership

In late-August 2018, Zen Cruises (a new company established by Essel Group, India) was announced as buyer of the vessel Pacific Jewel. Essel Group (1926-founded, headquartered in Mumbai India ) is an Indian conglomerate of several corporations with business divisions in media, news, technology, entertainment, packaging, infrastructure developments, financial services, precious metals (gold and silver refinery), education, charity. The Essel Group-owned Zen Cruises Pvt Ltd is lead by Jurgen Bailom (CEO and President).

In January 2020, Jalesh Cruises announced planned acquisition of a second ship to double the fleet's capacity. The second-hand vessel (the name was not announced) was scheduled to start operations in October 2020. In mid-October 2020, Jalesh announced in a statement that the company suspends operations permanently due to the ongoing COVID-related port closures and international travel restrictions.

Jalesh India suspended (initially temporarily) passenger shipping since March 12, 2020, mounting debts from creditors. The Karnika ship remained permanently docked at Port Mumbai (Bombay) with a skeleton crew of 60. In October, the company's creditors (via India's Admiralty Court) had the vessel arrested in Port Mumbai.

Jalesh Cruises planned to restart operations on November 6, 2020. India's Government permitted cruise vessels to start passenger shipping from October 1. The cruise ship's AIS transmitted for the last time on November 24, 2020, showing the vessel anchored near Alang Ship Breaking Yard . Unfortunately, this beautiful 30-year-old liner joined CruiseMapper's Scrapped Cruise Ships hub .

Jalesh Karnika ship (IMO number 8521220) was Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000892) and registered in Nassau . The vessel was last drydock refurbished (by P&O AU) in 2018.

MS Karnika cruise ship (Jalesh Cruises India)

Before Jalesh Cruises India, the liner's previous operator was P&O Australia - a subsidiary company fully owned by Carnival Corporation . The 1950-passenger ship Pacific Jewel used to be part also of the Carnival's German-based brand AIDA Cruises (as AIDAblu) and Ocean Village Holidays (now- defunct company ), before joining P&O Australia in 2009. The "dolphin-like" ship was designed by Italian Renzo Piano. Its sistership is Pacific Dawn (now Ambassador Ambience) .

The vessel was launched on May 25, 1989, as "Crown Princess", and delivered to P&O Princess Cruises on June 29, 1990. The inaugural voyage started on July 8. In 2002, the shipowner P&O Princess Cruises created A'Rosa Cruises (a Germany-targeting brand) and transferred the vessel, renaming it "A'Rosa Blu". In 2004, the new shipowner Carnival Corporation transferred the vessel to the AIDA subsidiary, increasing its capacity (to 2014 passengers, 621 crew) and renaming it to "AIDAblu". On April 24, 2007, started Ocean Village Two's Inaugural cruise (Mediterranean itinerary) following a drydock refit at Lloyd Werft (Bremerhaven Germany). The vessel joined its fleet mate Ocean Village One (currently Columbus ).

Pacific Jewel cruise ship as the design was sister to Pacific Dawn (now Ambassador Ambience) and similar to Pacific Pearl (CMV Columbus since 2017) and Crown Princess .

Pacific Jewel cruise ship (Ocean Village 2)

In 2010, the Ocean Village company ceased operations. In November the vessel was refurbished in Singapore (at Sembawang Shipyards), renamed "Pacific Jewel" and started a South Pacific cruise itinerary program with departures from homeport Sydney NSW Australia.

Vessel's official delivery to Zen Cruises was on March 12 (2019), followed by a major drydock refurbishment . Renamed "Karnika", the liner started operations for Zen Cruises (via the brand "Jalesh Cruises") on April 17, 2019, from homeport Mumbai.

The christening ceremony was on April 19, 2019, held in Port Mumbai. Karnika ship's godmother was Mrs Shreyasi Punit Goenka. The naming ceremony was attended by five people credited to international fame as India's first/best in their fields - Mr Milkha Singh (Commonwealth Games 1958 gold medal winner), Mrs Subhash Chandra (Actor) Ms Sushmita Sen (Miss Universe 1994), Mr Mahesh Bhupati (Grand Slam Tournament 1997 winner) and Ms Mary Kom (boxer, Asian Games 2014 winner). The special event started with priests chanting hymns. After the head priest traditionally broke a coconut followed the maritime naming ritual with the Godmother saying "I name this ship Karnika. May God bless her, her officers, staff, crew and all who sail on her". Next was the traditional breaking of a champagne bottle on the bow hull. The ceremony also featured live performances by Aakriti Kakkar (singer), Papa CJ (stand-up comedian) and DJ Bally Sagoo.

The cruise ship is named after the celestial maiden/nymph Apsara Karnika (female spirit) who rewards with treasures and pleasures those engaged in hard labour. "Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi" is a 2019-released Indian epic drama movie based on the life of Lakshmibai (Rani of Jhansi / 1828-1858, born in Varanasi). She was the Queen of Jhansi (reign 1853-54 and 1857-58). The Jhansi region is currently part of North India's Uttar Pradesh state.

The Monday itinerary visited Oman ( Khasab and Muscat ).

Pacific Jewel Wiki

The vessel’s flag-state/registry  was changed in 1992 (from Palermo Italy to Monrovia Liberia), in 2000 (to Hamilton Bermuda ), in 2002 (to London UK ), in 2004 (to Genoa Italy ), in 2007 (to London UK) and in 2019 (to Freeport Bahamas ). For P&O, the ship's Captain was Alan Nixon.

Following the delivery to Jalesh Cruises India, in 2019 the MMSI was changed from 235051998 (UK) to 311000892 (Bahamas).

In early-June 2020, Jalesh Cruises API-integrated with three of India's largest travel agencies - Riya Travels (Ajmer, Rajasthan India), Akbar Travels (Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu India) and Jagsons Travel (Nagpur, Maharashtra India). The three companies specialize mainly in booking flights, holidays and B2B travel. Jalesh's API integration allowed the booking agencies to receive real-time updates on promotions, itineraries, cabin availability and pricing related to the cruise ship Karnika.

MS Pacific Jewel started its carrier under the name "Crown Princess" - operated by Princess Cruises from 1990 to 2002. Then for 2 years, it was operated as "Arosa Blu" by Arosa Cruises , then for 3 years as AIDAblu ( AIDA Cruises ) and for 2 years as "Ocean Village 2" (by Carnival's brand "Ocean Village Holidays"). In 2009, the ship was transferred to P&O Australia's fleet, renamed "Pacific Jewel" and homeported in Sydney NSW (leaving from "White Bay Cruise Terminal WHT5").

For PandO, the ship operated cruises on mostly roundtrips to South Pacific Islands ("Pacific Island Hopper" itineraries) visiting ports in Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, PNG-Papua New Guinea, Tasmania. On Queensland cruises, the ship visited Great Barrier Reef ( Willis Island ), while on short breaks went to Moreton Island . In the Southeast Asia region, feature destinations were Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore .

Pacific Jewel's Cruise to Nowhere deals was on specially-themed Australian roundtrips with no additional ports of call along the route. These short-breaks were usually themed "Food and Wine", "Music" (various styles/performers), "Comedy", "Sports". P&O Australia's "cruises to nowhere" prices were inclusive of all special activities and themed onboard entertainment, including classes and workshops, lectures, presentations, guest performances, theme parties.

In 2017, the liner replaced in New Zealand the fleet-leaving Pacific Pearl (now CMV Columbus) , offering roundtrip Pacific Islands itineraries out of homeport Auckland NZ . Jewel was the first-ever cruise liner to visit the privately-owned Conflict Islands (Papua New Guinea) - in June 2016. This is a group of all 21 islands surrounding a blue lagoon with a pristine reef system. This made the new destination one of the perfect ones for snorkeling and diving excursions in the South Pacific. The Conflict Islands were part of P&O Australia's Papua New Guinea itineraries. The ship operated out of Melbourne (Victoria) (between November 2017 and March 2018) for 109 days, offering 18 voyages. A new 12-night NZ itinerary visited Fiordland Park and Stewart Island/Oban . Short Breaks were offered to Eden NSW and Kangaroo Island . In 2017, following Pacific Pearl's farewell, Pacific Jewel became PandO's New Zealand ship homeported in Auckland NZ for 2 months (Sept-Dec) and cruising to South Pacific Islands, before returning again in 2018.

In November 2017, P&O Australia operated the company's first-ever "Melbourne Cup Carnival" cruise from Auckland NZ . The 10-night itinerary "Emirates Melbourne Cup" also highlighted PandO’s inaugural season in New Zealand, with roundtrips from Auckland (September 1 through October 31, 2017). This sports- themed cruise attracted around 2000 NZ racing fans as part of the 6000-contingent of P&O AU guests cruising to "Melbourne Cup Carnival". Cruise fares included admission to the Thoroughbred horse race and transfers in Melbourne . Fares on the 10-night "Melbourne Cup" voyage started from AUD 1,342 pp (quad share) inclusive of entry and transfers to Melbourne Cup.

For Zen Cruises/Jalesh, Karnika ship's onboard hotel and administrative services (housekeeping, reception, payroll, health, food-beverage, vendor management, revenues collection) will be run by The Apollo Group via its subsidiary Apollo Ship Chandlers.

Pacific Jewel's last cruise for P&O was the 11-day repositioning Australia-Asia itinerary from Fremantle to Singapore.

Following the liner's official delivery to Jalesh (March 12), the repositioning cruise (Singapore to Mumbai) included as call ports Colombo , Cochin , Mangalore and Mormugao . In Singapore, the liner underwent an extensive drydock refurbishment at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard.

In late-March 2019, Jalesh Cruises’ signed a deal with BSCS (Bernhard Schulte Cruise Services GmbH & Co KG/subsidiary of the Singapore-based Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement Pte Ltd) for MS Karnika's technical management.

Pacific Jewel refurbishment 2018 review

Ship's last refurbishment on March 7-17, 2018 (10-day drydock in Garden Island Shipyard, Sydney NSW ) resulted in the following deckplan changes:

  • All public areas were redesigned.
  • New outdoor bowling green (Lawn Bowls) was added on deck 14 (first introduced in 2017 on the fleet mate Pacific Explorer).
  • Shell & Bones restaurant was added on deck 12 (replacing "Salt Grill by Luke Mangan"). It serves locally-sourced seafood, grilled and vegetarian food.
  • Orient Bar (a signature club for live music and stand-up comedy shows on Deck 7) received new soft furnishings made from premium fabrics.
  • Connexions Bar (deck 7) received a new pub-themed decor featuring custom-printed fabrics.
  • The poolside Internet Cafe (deck 12) was redesigned and its menu upgraded (now offering Spanish-style snacks).
  • The Oasis (adults-only retreat located aft on deck 11) received new furniture (nautical-themed lounge beds).
  • The ship's Atrium was redesigned and received new soft furnishings, accessories and hand-made artworks.
  • Works also included general maintenance, hull repainting and adding new P&O Australia livery.

Cartoon Network Wave cruise ship (Pacific Jewel?)

On January 28, 2018, the US satellite TV channel Cartoon Network announced its plans to start its own cruise line brand - "Cartoon Network Wave". The new brand is a partnership between the parent company Turner Broadcasting (Time Warner) and Oceanic Group (Asia-Pacific based cruise and leisure industry). The Cartoon Network Wave cruise line will operate voyages to 13 Asia Pacific destinations, including China, Singapore, Malaysia.

Cartoon Network cruise ship (Pacific Jewel)

The colourful vessel will start its maiden voyage from Singapore in late 2018. On board will be provided one of the best kids-themed experiences at sea. It will feature 800 staterooms, 11 entertainment decks (hosting themed nights - including theme parties and circus shows), rope course (outdoor adventure park), "Young Tooniverse" (outdoor playground for kids), Toonix pool, cartoon-themed onboard activities and amenities (entertainment, food, drinks, characters meets&greets - The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time, Ben 10, We Bare Bears).

The released artist’s impression images (based on the Pacific Jewel ship) resulted in speculations that the liner had been sold to the new company.

However, PandO responded that the vessel stays in the fleet, with scheduled drydock refit and homeporting in Auckland NZ and Brisbane QLD.

The ship’s features include the first Fabergé egg with a permanent home at sea. The blue-pearl-and-diamond sculpture titled “Journey in Jewels” is a small but commanding centerpiece rotating within its display case in the atrium for travelers to enjoy as soon as they step on board.

The egg is revealed as seven branches break away like waves that represent the Seven Seas. The ship’s godmother is Sarah Fabergé, the great-granddaughter of Peter Carl Fabergé.

It’s part of a 1,600-piece art collection that includes classic black-and-white photos from global destinations adorning the hallways between cabins to the steakhouse’s original Picassos. Travelers could spend a good afternoon wandering hallways and public spaces, akin to visiting a museum. A new app for the line also offers a digital art tour, like a personal guide.

“With each new ship, our team works tirelessly to identify and source the most impressive array of art pieces, building a collection that would be enviable by most modern-day museums, to ensure our guests’ time onboard is as enriching and thought-provoking as their time on land,” said Regent Seven Seas Cruises President Andrea DeMarco.

All three ships in the Explorer class are about 55,500 gross tons, with Grandeur sporting a 744-guest capacity among its all-suite offerings. The line has three older ships and just had two larger vessels ordered by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are not due until 2026 and 2029.

Until then, the three sister ships continue the line’s most refined take on their global, all-inclusive itineraries, with both Splendor and Grandeur set to return to Miami for the 2024-25 winter Caribbean season.

The line has given all three Explorer-class ships a succession of superlative monikers. Seven Seas Grandeur was dubbed with “A Heritage of Perfection,” following Seven Seas Explorer’s “the most luxurious cruise ship ever” and Seven Seas Splendor’s “the ship that perfects luxury.”

With 548 crew, Grandeur boasts a 1:1.36 crew-to-passenger ratio similar to its two sisters, so needs among travelers are attended to promptly.

The ship’s interior spaces are crafted by Miami-based Studio DADO, which has put its mark on sister lines Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

That includes new takes on main dining venue Compass Rose, which DADO founding partner Yohandel Ruiz called “a feast for the eyes.”

It’s filled with fantastical tree-like arches right out of Alice in Wonderland with a cascading waterfall sculpture. At night, thousands of individually placed crystal-faceted leaves encrusted on pillars and branches illuminate the space.

The ship has five signature restaurants on board, including steakhouse Prime 7, Italian option Sette Mari at La Veranda, French offering Chartreuse and the latest version of Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, this time bringing a delicate bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture as the centerpiece at the entrance. It’s a welcome and fitting addition to the dragon and prayer wheel sculptures on its two sister ships.

The ship has 15 suite categories, all with their own balconies. The pinnacle of sailing options is the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite at $11,000 a night. It features a $200,000 Hästens Vividus custom handmade mattress, an in-suite spa retreat with a personal sauna and steam room and 270-degree views from the ship’s bow from a 1,292-square-foot wraparound veranda. Those passengers get their own butler and personal car and driver in every port.

Some seven-night Miami-based sailings go for as low as $3,700 per person based on double occupancy.

For everyone on board is the spa with an infinity pool that looks out over the stern, fitness center, jogging track, casino, several lounges, card room, library and main pool. Top-deck fun includes pickleball, shuffleboard, mini golf and ping-pong.

A big draw to Regent is the mostly inclusive offerings, including free and unlimited shore excursions, round-trip flights, unlimited internet, prepaid gratuities, ground transfers and other amenities.

One of the best offerings on board, though, isn’t free. Back again is the Culinary Arts Kitchen, a staple borrowed from sister line Oceania Cruises, but a massively popular offering that lets 18 students create memorable dishes under the guidance of a chef team.

Chef John Stephano leads a class in the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur on Jan. 25, 2024. The ship is the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

During a preview cruise for media in January out of PortMiami, the class was led by the amiable Chef John Stephano talking students through a pair of sample dishes – pasta al limone, which is lemon pasta, and French crêpes with an allspice berry ice cream, offered during what are normally two-hour-long classes twice per day on sailings.

“I promise you’re going to make delicious and delightful food,” he said but joked that “anybody that struggles with their culinary skills today, we’ll be sending you down to the galley to help us out.”

Stephano deftly demonstrates and drops bits of history and detail during the demonstration with students gathered around, who then go one of the 18 individual stations equipped with induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and a collection of tools, tongs, pots and pans, while he and assistant chefs make the rounds to ensure everyone is figuring out the steps.
