According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a dog travel crate should meet the following criteria: 

• Be large enough for your pet to stand without touching the top of the cage, turn around, and lie down. (Editor’s note: A good way to do this is to measure your pup nose to tail and then head to floor while they are seated, then add 4 inches to all measurements.)
• Be strong and free of interior protrusions, with handles or a grip.
• Have a leak-proof bottom with plenty of absorbent material
• Be ventilated on opposite sides, with exterior knobs and rims that will not block airflow.
• Be clearly labeled with your name, home address and phone number, destination contact information and a sign stating “Live Animals” with arrows showing which way is upright.

Measuring your dog is the most important thing you can do

You’ll need to measure your dog’s length and height. Before purchase, always be sure to check on the weight limit of the travel crate, too.

No matter what type of crate you pick, the biggest benefit of using one is encasing your precious furbaby from unpredictable travel mishaps. Aside from safety, purchasing an easy-to-clean, lightweight, well-ventilated crate will make traveling much easier for you and your pooch.

Here are a few more things to consider

Aside from keeping your dog safe, the ideal travel dog crate will be spacious, well-ventilated, and a place of comfort for your pup.

Make sure it’s sturdy — The last travel mishap you need is a broken zipper, torn strap, or busted plastic on your travel dog crate. You definitely don’t want it breaking mid-trip. Invest in a high-quality option from the start!  A warranty is never a bad idea.

Think about appropriate ventilation — Your dog should have plenty of ventilation in its crate, whether it’s a plastic, metal, or fabric crate.

Think about weight — If you’ll be dashing from terminal to terminal, consider adding wheels or having a very lightweight carrier that’s easy to bring along.

If you can, do a trial run — You don’t want to get frustrated with learning how to use the crate latches, zippers, etc. while you’re dealing with the stress of travel. Travel tips

Travel isn’t just stressful for humans. Dogs can feel your worry and tension, too. If possible, try and plan ahead (and prepare) as much as possible before the trip. No matter your mode of transportation, do your best to keep your dog comfortable. Whenever you plan to travel, setting up a vet appointment to get the all-clear is a great idea (and in some cases, required), too.

• Is my dog in good enough health to travel?
• What will I do in the event of a pet health emergency?
• Will I need to plan ahead for pet-friendly hotels?
• What special accommodations do I need to make based on the weather?

Traveling by car

Just as you buckle up, you’ll want to keep your dog secured in their crate for the duration of the trip.  If not using a crate, don’t let your pooch hang out the window (as cute as that is to see in your side-view mirror, it runs a risk of debris getting into their eyes or ears).

A few other tips for the road trip: 

• Get in some short car trips before the big travel day
• Never leave a dog alone in a hot car crated up
• Stretch your legs and break up driving after a few hours at a time
• Bring a favorite toy or bone to make your dog feel secure
• Give your dog ⅓ of their normal food intake prior to travel and to avoid an upset tummy

Note: If you don’t want to use a crate to secure your pooch, consider a seatbelt restraint. It’s an affordable option that allows your dog a little more freedom to do fun dog things like look out the window. 🐶

Taking to the skies

Airports are notorious for long lines and delays. Aside from getting there with plenty of time to spare before your flight, make sure you allow your dog to stretch and get some fresh air, too. They’ll be crated up for a good amount of time (even without delays), so a final outdoor potty break is a good idea prior to check-in.

Note: Some airlines specialize in taking care of dogs who fly. In fact, American Airlines flew the U.S. Naval Academy’s mascot to its college bowl game. Every airline is different. Some may only allow service or emotional support dogs to fly in the cabin while others need to go below in cargo. Call ahead before you book.

Traveling with a dog is a skill

Preparation is key to making sure traveling with your pet is successful as it reduces anxiety for you and them. Create a master to-do list for yourself and include your pet’s needs on it, too, so you don’t forget anything major.

Another great idea? The American Kennel Club recommends bringing along current pictures of your dog in the event they get lost.

What to look for in a dog travel crate.

To ensure a dog travel crates meets the needs of you and your pup, here are the main things to look out for:

Material: The material used for your dog travel crate needs to be durable and lightweight, and able to stand up to your dog, if they are a chewer or scratcher. The most popular materials for travel carriers are plastic, wire or soft fabric. Choose the appropriate fabric for your intended crate use, eg. you will need a hard-sided crate if your pooch is going into the airplane hold, or a soft carrier is ideal for the cabin or in your car.

Size: The crate must also be the right size for your dog. It should be big enough for them to sit, stand, lie down and turn around in, but sized to keep them safe and secure. We have more details on how to choose the right size of crate at the end of this guide. 

Sufficient ventilation: Your pooch needs to be able to breathe and also have sufficient airflow inside their crate to prevent them over-heating. Look for a travel crate that has ventilation panels on at least four sides.

This was a logical follow-up to their viral social media campaign of the previous year, when kittens stole the show. The personnel of this military branch handles tough civil works in the whole of Oregon and southwestern Washington, so a bit of lighthearted humor really goes a long way for them. Their staff got the idea of superimposing photos of cats and dogs into quality landscape photos of the most important public infrastructure projects that the teams were involved with. The idea was an instant hit. In many cases of dry eyes, veterinarians prescribe artificial tears or  lubricating eye drops to help moisturize the eyes and relieve discomfort. These drops can help supplement the natural tear production and provide relief from dryness. 

Once-Abused Dog Celebrates First Christmas With Vet Who Saved Him

A puppy who survived a terrible beating has celebrated his ‘first proper’ Christmas with a veterinarian nurse who provided a loving furever home for him.A whippet named Terry was only 12 weeks old when he was viciously attacked by his owner and left with severe trauma injuries after he urinated inside. The injured pup was taken to the Hull PDSA Animal Hospital in East Yorks, England, where he was treated by the veterinary nurse Rachel Coombes. During the initial exam, the hospital’s staff discovered that Terry had a bruised eye and lips. The pup was also missing three of his upper incisors, and another tooth was broken.For nurse Coombes, this was love at first sight! She told her colleagues that if Terry survived, she would adopt him, and that’s exactly what she did.Although Terry celebrated Christmas with Rachel and her son Stanley last year, this year was their ‘first proper’ Christmas together since Terry is now fully settled in with the family.“I just felt a connection as soon as he was brought in as he was in such a state we actually thought initially that he hadn’t made it,” said nurse Rachel according to Talker. “Then when we spotted gentle breathing I did say ‘if he survives this I’m going to give him home’ which is exactly what I did.”From that moment on, Terry’s life changed completely! “He hasn’t looked back since - he loves life and is having the best of life right now.” According to his new owner, Terry likes to run around the garden and enjoys going to the beach. The pooch has also formed a strong bond with Rachel’s son, Stanley, and is always by his side. “Last year, we got him around Christmas, but it was such a hectic time for him, and he was learning to settle then.” But this year, the family planned a festive celebration for Terry and did everything to make him feel special during the holiday season. Due to the suspicious nature of Terry’s injuries, RSPCA Inspector Laura Barber was asked to investigate. The inspector said that despite the severity of his injuries and his overall state, Terry had put his head on her and was so trusting. “He was in such a sad state and was really quiet and withdrawn when he was with people. He was so lovable, and it is great to see he has a home he deserves with such a lovely family.”“I know Terry will have the best first proper Christmas with his lovely new family and one he thoroughly deserves,” the inspector added. Terry’s extensive injuries were enough to build a case against his former owner. After appearing in court and admitting to causing unnecessary suffering to a dog, the person was handed a five-year ban on keeping animals. Emily Lomas, an animal care assistant at RSPCA’s Hull branch, said she was thrilled when she learned that Rachel had adopted Terry. “He was very traumatized and overwhelmed when he came to us, we had to really show him there was nothing to be scared of and that he was now safe. Lost Service Dog Survived 2 Months Alone in the Colorado Mountains

It’s every dog parent’s nightmare. 14-month-old service dog in training Nova Riley slipped out of her harness and bolted out of a Safeway parking lot in a panic. After several sightings by the community as they searched tirelessly alongside owner Robynne Simons-Sealy, Nova continued to run in fear from anyone who attempted to catch her. After two long months of worrying and searching, Simons-Sealy was reunited with her beloved Bernese Mountain Dog. Nova was discovered injured in the woods of Meyers Ranch Park by two hikers on November 19th. The hikers recognized that she was injured, frightened, and needed help. They tried to carry her out to safely, but due to her high anxiety (understandable, given the situation), she bit one of her rescuers. Refusing to leave the poor dog behind, they decided to bring in help. One hiker stayed with Nova to keep her calm and assure her they weren’t giving up on her. The other hiker descended the trail to ask the park rangers for help and guide them, along with Animal Control Officer Kylie Rupe, three miles back to her position. “When we first got up there, I had brought treats and food up with me, knowing she would probably be very food-motivated at that point,” explained Rupe. “I used food to make friends, and she was very friendly but skittish.” With the help of both the rangers and animal control, Nova was carried to safety on a tarp. One of the rangers had recognized Nova from a lost dog poster, allowing her to be reunited with her worried and ever-grateful owner.

Scientists Finally Identify Mystery Dog Illness Sweeping America

If you are a dog owner in the United States, you have likely already seen the news reports about the mystery illness responsible for the deaths of several dogs, prompting veterinary professionals to caution pet parents about taking their pets out to public spaces. But we may finally be able to spot the light at the end of the tunnel… Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, reported that scientists have finally identified the cause of the illness. While this doesn’t mean that life for our dogs can return to normal immediately, it does mean that they are one step closer to finding a cure and moving past this nightmare. The research article has yet to be published, but the team is sharing their initial findings to provide hope for pet parents and the veterinary community. The pathogen responsible for the mystery respiratory illness is described as “a funky bacterium.” “It’s smaller than a normal bacterium in its size and in the size of its genome,” explained Needle. “Long story short, it’s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.” Searching for the cause of this illness wasn’t easy for researchers. Initially, there were no known bacterial, viral, or fungal pathogens, meaning they were searching blind. However, after testing 30 samples from New Hampshire, genetic material from an atypical bacterial species was discovered. The next step in understanding the cause of the illness and working towards a cure (and possible preventative) is to compare these findings to samples from dogs in other states to verify that it is, in fact, the same pathogen in all reported instances. On one hand, this can be frustrating as it leaves you feeling overwhelmed navigating the wide assortment of options. On the other hand, it means you can purchase a muzzle uniquely suited for your dog’s needs. Here are a few key factors to consider when making your decision: MaterialThere are several materials to consider when shopping for a muzzle, including metal, plastic, rubber, vinyl, leather, Biothane, fabric, silicone, and more. To determine the best option for your dog, there are a few critical deciding factors: Do you need a muzzle that can prevent a determined dog from biting? Will your dog be wearing the muzzle outdoors in the elements? Is weight a factor for your dog? Does your dog engage in “muzzle punching” when wearing a muzzle (ramming into people with the muzzle)? Will your dog likely shove the muzzle into the dirt while trying to smell the ground? It is important to note that most muzzles are not considered “bite-proof.” This means they shouldn’t be relied on to prevent a bite from occurring. If you are muzzling as a safety precaution due to a bite risk, the best options are vinyl or wire basket muzzles. Ease of Use Like harnesses and collars, some dogs make fastening a muzzle easy, while others can make the process a challenge. This doesn’t necessarily mean they dislike the muzzle or aren’t properly conditioned to the muzzle. For example, if our boy Lucifer is overly excited about going somewhere, he sometimes gets the zoomies. He usually will stand still to let us buckle his muzzle, but it’s hard to control the zoomies when they hit! A muzzle with a quick-release buckle will be your best option if that sounds familiar. This is faster to secure than a traditional threaded buckle. Airflow One primary concern for those considering muzzling their dogs is the airflow that they will offer, and for good reason! This is especially important if your dog is going to be active while wearing the muzzle. Wire basket muzzles are often a favorite for high-energy dogs, allowing for uninterrupted airflow and making it easy for your dog to drink while wearing it. In comparison, leather and Biothane muzzles, especially those designed to prevent scavengers from being able to pick up “goodies” on their walks, generally limit airflow. Carefully consider your dog’s lifestyle and the situations where a muzzle may be needed.

Forbes surveyed 10,000 dog owners across the 50 states to find America’s top dog breed. The survey involved the top 25 most popular dog breeds nationwide, according to the American Kennel Club. So, what is America’s top dog? As it turns out, “no breed in particular” is the country’s favorite at 13%.However, if Americans had to decide, they’d pick the Australian shepherd as a favorite, followed by the German shepherd and the bulldog.The highly intelligent and energetic Australian shepherd was ranked as the top dog breed in 10 states, including Alabama, Arizona, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, Missouri, New York, and Virginia. This breed was also voted the second favorite in nine states. Although Aussies won the popularity vote, the German shepherd was the number one pick in 16 states. That’s more than any other breed!Known for its loyal and courageous nature, the German shepherd is the most common breed to serve as a police K9 but also makes a wonderful family companion. How to choose the best dog travel crate

The main thing you need to consider when buying a dog travel crate is size. Does the model you want come in the right size to accommodate your dog? Make sure that you measure and weigh your pet pooch before considering any options. The more space your furry friend has, the happier they will be. So you might want to think about the next size up in the range if available.  

But it’s not all about size. If you are traveling on vacation by air, you should consider an airline-approved model. But make sure to check the details with the airline before you go anywhere.

You can choose between hard and soft crates. Hard crates are easy to wipe clean and offer more protection on bumpy rides, but soft crates are typically machine washable and ideal if you need to fold down and store the crate when not in use.

A good product for the money. Had to do the odd tweaking with pliers for a good assembly. Fits into the back of our Volvo XC90. Assembled, it just fits into the narrowest point of tailgate opening. Our 2 Belgium Shepherd dogs are comfortable with the divider in place. I would recommend this product, plus the delivery was excellent.

I’m really pleased with the double car crate and all the help I received. There was an issue with the wrong size crate originally being delivered, but it was all sorted in a friendly and professional manner. The correct crate (XL) was delivered the next day and the incorrect one was also picked up at the same time. The delivery driver was also very helpful as was the lady from Arrow. I used the crate today and the dogs seemed very happy, it will make my life so much easier. Plenty of room for a German shepherd and my Bosnian mixed breed (same weight as a shepherd).

While many of the other crates that we tested also scored well for their easy-to-clean surfaces, the additional divider in this crate kit set it apart from the rest. Plus, this crate’s plastic tray slides out easily, making it simple to clean if any major accidents happen. We also love that this crate has rubberized rolling buffers to protect hardwood, vinyl, or tile flooring. 

This crate from MidWest Homes for Pets passed our lab tests with perfect scores in ease of setup, use, and cleaning. Its basic aesthetic may not win any beauty contests, but it's certainly functional. We especially love the double door model, which makes it a cinch to access the crate from the front or side, adding significantly to the iCrate's flexibility.

The practicality of this crate coupled with its easy-to-collapse and easy-to-clean design can't be beat. The setup is as simple as pulling the top of the crate up and snapping the hooks into place. Removing the plastic tray is also easy, as there is a slot for it to slide out from the bottom of the crate. A security hook also ensures that the tray stays in its place when your pup is on top of it. 

The only downside we found is the door does bend slightly when it’s pulled on, not significant enough for a dog to bust through the door, but it’s still a worthy concern for any owners with  especially strong, excitable or high-strung pooches . Despite this one design concern, we’d still recommend this crate as a reliable and basic option that's durable enough to withstand pet wear and tear over time.

Finding a dog crate that doesn’t break the bank but still does its job well can be challenging, but we were very impressed with this crate from Amazon Basics, which has a PVC frame with polyester and mesh fabric cover, all for a very affordable price.

This crate has three openings (one at either end of the crate and one on the top) that are secured by zippers. They can also be rolled up and fastened to the top of the crate. This crate is super lightweight, making it a great option for travel, but it doesn’t have a carrying handle. 

Overall the crate is very durable and designed to endure—it didn’t budge or break when a sandbag was thrown on top of it and at the front of it. Long term maintenance and cleaning will likely require the use of a handheld vacuum to target the smaller nooks and crannies within the crate’s frame.

If you’re looking for a luxurious and incredibly durable dog crate, we recommend the Diggs Revol Collapsible Dog Crate. This crate collapses when you twist the top handle, and the sides lift up, offering multiple access points for your pet.

We like the intuitive design and the heavy-duty crate is hard to budge once in place, even with 45 pounds of force directed at the door in our lab testing environment. Throwing multiple sandbags at the crate also did not impact its structure or appearance.

This crate’s tray is removable so that you can easily clean it, and it has a raised edge to prevent any leakage if accidents do happen while your pet is inside the crate. The crate’s door is secured by a latch that's released by pressing a button, so it’s much more secure than other crates that only have a sliding bolt. But the crate is  not very compact , even when it’s collapsed, so it may not be easily stored under certain pieces of furniture or in small closets. While the price point on this crate is certainly a splurge in anyone’s budget, we do believe the price fairly reflects this crate’s high quality and unique design.

The overall design of the Fable Pets Crate easily double as a bedside table or end table in a family room. The dual function crate is relatively easy to put together out of the box, similar to the labor intensity of Ikea furniture.

The crate is made out of bentwood and comes in two wood finishes, signature (lighter) or walnut (darker), with the choice of a clear acrylic door or white metal door. Both door options have square-shaped cut-outs for visibility and airflow. If your dog tends to paw at the door of their crate, you might find the metal door option to be more durable.

How We Tested the Dog Crates

We tested 20 dog crates in  The Lab  in Industry City, Brooklyn. After setting up each crate, we conducted multiple strength tests on the crates to rate their durability. We asked each tester to place a 25- and 10-pound sandbag inside the dog crate and then apply 40 pounds of pulling pressure onto the door of the crate with a luggage scale. Testers then rated (out of 5) the crates on whether the door popped open, warped, or broke from the pressure of the scale. We also asked testers to throw a 25-pound sandbag at the side of each crate (this test was skipped for soft-sided crates) and rate its appearance and durability after the impact of the sandbag. 

In addition to these strength tests, our testers also made judgments on each crate’s overall appearance, ease of use, and ease of cleaning. We also asked our testers to consider which categories or scenarios each crate would be best suited for and, finally, asked them to consider the crate’s overall value.

Most soft-sided travel carriers fit comfortably underneath the seat in front of you so your pet stays close to you during the flight. Excellent cage and delivery. Called up to ask a couple of questions and who I spoke to was so helpful. I ordered at 11:58 on Wednesday and it arrived at 09:37 on Thursday. This is for my 4 cats to travel with me. Lots of room. Put it in the car and it’s a perfect fit. Easy to assemble. Very sturdy. Cover that comes with it is nice too. Well worth the money.
