Foster + Partners has formally revealed its new global home for the PGA Tour at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass ( TPC Sawgrass ), a fabled golf mecca comprised of two courses (the Stadium Course and the Valley Course), in the well-heeled seaside resort town of Ponta Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Florida.

First announced in 2018 and breaking ground the following year, work on the highly anticipated $65 million complex wrapped up late last year and was fully employee-ready by mid-February, opening at a reduced capacity in January of this year. As pointed out by the Jacksonville Business Journal , most of the PGA Tour’s 700-plus employees, at the time, had been working remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.

a three-level atrium space with a massive skylight

Initially headquartered in Maryland, the PGA Tour has called Ponta Vedra Beach home since the late 1970s, when it settled in a two-building compound adjacent to TPC Sawgrass—which itself opened in 1980 on over 400 acres of swampland. Two years later, the ( initially galling ) Stadium Course designed by Pete and Alice Dye was established as the permanent home of the annual high-prize Player’s Championship. That office campus, which in recent years proved to be too small and outdated for the organization’s growing workforce, and ultimately led the PGA to lease out a number of satellite offices at a nearby shopping center, was demolished just last week. That potentially makes way for new green space that would be part of the entrance to TPC Sawgrass and a parking lot, as Laura Neal, PGA Tour’s senior vice president of communications, told GolfWeek .

Located south of the main clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass and not too far from the Stadium Course’s (in)famous  Island Green , PGA Tour’s new Foster + Partners-designed digs finds the entire organization together under the same roof for the very first time. And what a roof it is.

Spread across 187,000-square-foot feet, the structure is comprised of a squat, three-level glazed volume bisected by a central atrium that runs the length of the building. That sits situated beneath a soaring, column-supported roof structure. Incorporating biophilic design principles in which natural light and the flow of fresh air were paramount concerns, the PGA Tour’s new home takes the appearance of a free-standing, glass-encased jewel box positioned squarely beneath a monumental pavilion that shields its inhabitants from the unforgiving Florida sun.

a spacious semi-sheltered outdoor plaza

“On our very first visit to the site at Sawgrass, we were inspired by the quality of the landscape, the interplay of light and shade and the water,” said Nigel Dancey, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners. “This led to our very first sketches, maximising light and views beneath a generous overhanging roof that creates shaded external terraces and plaza spaces.”

The aforementioned atrium, which serves as a central social space for PGA Tour employees, is a focal point of the building’s program. As Foster + Partners elaborated in its news release:

“The atrium is lined with flexible formal and informal meeting spaces along with generous amenities for staff. The two building bays are connected by 20-foot-wide bridges that encourage chance meetings, and allow for informal gatherings along the edges, without impeding the flow of people. A grand central stair cascading down the central atrium creates a dynamic spatial and visual flow between successive levels. Flexible workspaces are located on the wide terraces along the atrium and the far ends of the building on the upper floors to support an increasingly mobile workforce.”

Flanked by a newly created “natural” lake, PGA Tour’s new home also, of course, takes full advantage of the stunning, albeit heavily manicured, surrounding landscape, and offers employees and guests no shortage of panoramic views of the lush grounds. This includes a staff cafe and fitness center on the western side of the building that looks out directly onto the golf course. In addition, other notable features of the new PGA Tour HQ, as detailed by the Business Journal , include six wellness centers, dedicated offices for the PGA Tour’s television partner, NBC, and no less than 150 display screens spread throughout the building.

Initial design work on a separate digital media building, also designed by Foster + Partners, is currently underway as part of a second phase that will “help create an integrated campus at TPC Sawgrass,” according to the firm.

New PGA TOUR headquarters plans to add new media center

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Despite the rain on Friday, it was still a loaded course with nearly all of the world’s best golfers competing in THE PLAYERS Championship.

STORY: First Alert Weather: Flood watch into Saturday morning, inland freeze watch Saturday night

Last week, Action News Jax got a tour inside the PGA TOUR headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach.

It’s a 187,000-square-foot space for more than 750 employees and there’s room to hire several hundred more.

The new global home of the PGA TOUR has been a dream in the making for the last seven years before it opened its doors in 2021.

Allison Keller, the chief administrative officer for the PGA TOUR, took me on a tour of their new headquarters.

“We have a chef that prepares fresh meals from stations including flatbread items, fresh salads, and other really nice gourmet items,” Keller said.

It’s clear to see why these employees don’t want to work from home.

There’s a coffee and smoothie bar and places to sit back and unwind, as well as a 24/7 gym to get your heart pumping.

“We encourage our employees to come and work out even in the middle of the day, even at odd hours to again get that refreshment, that energy to do what we have to do,” Keller said.

Its economic impact in the area, combined with THE PLAYERS Championship helps generate over a billion dollars and its only going to expand.

“In fact we’re actually designing a media facility. A media production facility that will open in 2024 and that will have an additional $112 million annual impact so that will be another 165,000-square-foot building that is a lot of technology and broadcast equipment for digital and social satellite feeds. It just really speaks to the growth that we’ve experienced in this area,” Keller said.

Keller said THE PLAYERS Championship has been a flagship event in Ponte Vedra Beach for the last 40 years and if you work here, you can catch the championship right in your backyard.

“We’re just a short walk through those trees to the roar of the 17th Island Green, which is one of the most famous holes of golf on the planet and our employees love that,” Keller said.

Text description provided by the architects. Set within the stunning natural wetlands of TPC Sawgrass, the new Global Home of the PGA TOUR in Ponte Vedra Beach , Florida has officially opened. Bringing the entire organisation under one roof for the first time, the building offers an innovative vision for a workplace in a post-pandemic world. Focussing on health and wellbeing, the design blurs the boundaries between the lush landscape and the interior spaces with shaded outdoor terraces and generous amenities that embrace new ways of working and collaboration.

Nature plays a key role in the design, which incorporates principles of biophilia – an inherent affinity for nature found in humans – that is proven to enhance staff wellbeing and improve the quality of the workplace. The focus has been on creating a rich experience throughout the building while enhancing the connections with the surrounding landscape and flooding the building with natural light and fresh air.

The low-slung three-storied structure is nestled within the verdant landscape and surrounded by a newly created lake that defines a dramatic arrival experience. The floorplates are bisected by an atrium that runs the length of the building – the social heart of the building for company-wide events. The atrium is lined with flexible formal and informal meeting spaces along with generous amenities for staff. The two-building bays are connected by 20-foot-wide bridges that encourage chance meetings and allow for informal gatherings along the edges, without impeding the flow of people.

A grand central stair cascading down the central atrium creates a dynamic spatial and visual flow between successive levels. Flexible workspaces are located on the wide terraces along the atrium and the far ends of the building on the upper floors to support an increasingly mobile workforce. Looking onto the lush landscape surrounding the golf course, the western end of the building contains a new staff café and gym on the ground floor, creating a new social focus for staff.

The glazed façades and atrium fill the building with natural light, also allowing for panoramic views out to the surrounding landscape. The building’s raised floor aims to futureproof the building with the flexibility to change internal configurations over time. The design adopts a simple and understated palette of materials that act as a backdrop to a vibrant and energetic workplace.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the cj cup byron nelson 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

jason-day-usatsi.jpg

K.H. Lee only has two PGA Tour victories in his career, but they both came at TPC Craig Ranch (2021, 2022). He will be eyeing a third win in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week after finishing T-11 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week. Lee has a pair of top-10 finishes this season, as he finished T-4 in the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches and T-9 in the Valspar Championship. He is a 60-1 longshot in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, while Dallas native Jordan Spieth is the 12-1 favorite.

Defending champion Jason Day is second on the PGA odds board at 18-1, while Will Zalatoris (22-1) and Si Woo Kim (22-1) are both CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 contenders. Which golfers should you target with your 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson bets? Before making any 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Jason Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.

Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament.

Another surprise: Min Woo Lee, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Lee has only been in contention for one title this season, finishing T-2 in the Cognizant Classic in March.

However, he has made the cut in seven of his first eight tournaments, so he is putting himself in a position to succeed. He is also facing a softer field than normal this week, with most of the top golfers in the sport taking the week off. Driving distance and accuracy off the tee are the biggest factors at TPC Craig Ranch, and Lee ranks second on the PGA Tour in total driving, so he should fare well this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Tiger Woods gets $100m equity payment for staying loyal to PGA Tour

Tiger Woods has received an email from Sawgrass HQ informing him that he will receive up to $100 million in equity for staying loyal to the PGA Tour, with Rory McIlroy benefitting possibly to the tune of $50m for not joining LIV.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, pressed the button on the ultra-personal messages that have been eagerly awaited since Strategic Sports Group – a consortium of US investors led by Liverpool FC owner Fenway Sports – pumped $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises , the new for-profit company, three months ago.

Approximately two thirds of that figure will be divvied up as equity to 193 golfers, although with $750 million to be split among the 36 superstars adjudged by the circuit to be most deserving the sums will be wildly different. Little wonder, therefore, that Monahan and his management team have been at pains to keep the breakdown confidential.

The Tour has already explained to its members that a primary factor in determining who obtains what is a metric called ‘career points’, which, as it says on the tin, awards marks for achievements on Tour for however long the players have been competing.

Other factors will be how they have fared in the Player Impact Program(PIP) – introduced three years ago largely to stave off the threat of the breakaway league – which rewards players who have had the largest impact on the Tour’s business: tickets, sponsorships, media consumption and fan engagement. Woods has already received $35 million in PIP payments, while McIlroy, who topped last year’s program, has pulled in $30.5 million from this source of income.

Inevitably, Woods, with 82 Tour titles, will be miles clear in the overall standings and insiders forecast he could secure as much as two times more than any other player in the sliding-scale system.

Phil Mickelson would have been second had he not jumped ship to LIV – the rebels are obviously excluded – although the new entity and this scheme would almost certainly not have come to fruition but for the formation of the Saudi-funded league and, in part, Mickelson’s role in the sporting civil war.

With three victories in the FedEx Cup – basically the PGA Tour money list – McIlroy will be Woods’s nearest pursuer and there will follow the likes of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who will be due equity worth about $30 million.

Annual equity awards for other PGA players

Of course, with Jon Rahm landing an upfront fee of $450 million to defect late last year, all of these names would have acquired far, far more if they had succumbed to the Saudi offers. And this record payday does not mean money in the bank. The recipients will be told how many equity units they have been granted and what the fair market value is at this juncture. They will not be able to cash in immediately and then suddenly sign for LIV.

After four years, 50 per cent of their equity will be vested, with another 25 per cent two years later and the remaining amount two years after that. They will also have to fall in line with the rules, which as well as not decamping, involve meeting the minimum requirements for Tour membership and, if not, providing services such as sponsors meets and media appearances.

The lucky three dozen will rub their hands, but the next 64 players will also collect $75 million in equity between them. The next tranche will see a total of 57 players sharing $30 million and another $75 million will be carved up between the 36 players considered living legends who have retired. In each group, career points will be the overriding determinant. Going forward, the Tour has pledged to award equity of $100 million on an annual basis rewarding those such as second-year sensation Ludvig Aberg who are quickly picking up career points.

Naturally, the equity will grow, despite the Tour’s recent poor TV ratings as the dilution of talent because of the split takes its toll. Nobody is expecting it to fall. And if the Tour can agree a deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund in the ongoing negotiations then the players hope their stocks could explode. If that remains uncertain then at least one thing appears assured: the current batch of professionals are not going poor anytime soon.

Player Equity Program helps further align interest of fans, PGA TOUR players

Change Text Size

The recent roll-out of the PGA TOUR’s Player Equity Program (PEP) is another example of the TOUR strengthening its ability to lead professional golf forward. By offering players equity stakes in PGA TOUR Enterprises, the PEP aligns the interests of players and the PGA TOUR around a common goal: to bring the world’s best golfers together on iconic courses to deliver memorable competitions in a way that maximizes fan interest and enjoyment.

Tyler Dennis, the PGA TOUR’s Chief Competitions Officer, called the roll-out of the PEP “a historic moment for the PGA TOUR.”

“This is a first in professional sports. There’s no other sports league in the world that has this significant number of their athletes as owners of their own sports organization,” Dennis said. “We’re really excited about it because ultimately we want to do what is right for the fan.”

The PEP is an important element of PGA TOUR Enterprises, the newly-created for-profit entity that houses the PGA TOUR’s commercial assets, including its sponsorship and media agreements. In creating a for-profit legal entity for the first time, PGA TOUR Enterprises provides a structure through which the PGA TOUR can reinvest substantial capital directly into the game, including PEP. PGA TOUR Enterprises recently received a $1.5 billion investment from the Strategic Sports Group (SSG), a consortium of U.S.-based sports owners who bring decades of experience and expertise across sports.

PGA TOUR players’ eligibility to participate in PEP is determined based on a number of factors, including their on-course performance and historical contributions to the game of golf. In order to maintain eligibility, players must participate in a specified number of annual PGA TOUR sanctioned events and/or provide other services to the PGA TOUR. Future equity grants for PGA TOUR Enterprises will be determined on an ongoing basis based on a similar calculation of on-course performance and off-the-course impact on fan engagement.

“Owners are motivated to think beyond their personal performance week-to-week and year-to-year,” said Jason Gore, the TOUR’s Executive Vice President Chief Player Officer. “They have a broader perspective of how their actions can impact the long-term health and performance of the TOUR in a positive way. One that meets the needs of our fans at every turn. It’s no longer as much ‘What’s in it for me?’ as ‘What’s good for fans and good for the PGA TOUR?'”

It offers a true win-win for all who love the game.

Rory McIlroy sang Journey in New Orleans. He also won the golf tournament

NEW ORLEANS — Rory McIlroy is on the TPC Louisiana 19th green stage with a beer in one hand and a microphone in the other. He’s got Mardi Gras beads around his neck standing next to one of his best friends, Shane Lowry, and the drunken New Orleans crowd keeps chanting.

“Rory! Rory! Rory!”

“Do you know any songs from the 80s?” the bandleader asks.

And then Journey starts playing.

The four-time major champ belted out “Don’t Stop Believing” early Sunday evening, tossing his head back to put his chest into the notes. Lowry just laughed and drank his beer watching his buddy make a fool of himself. As he walked off moments later, Lowry answered why he didn’t join — “I would have sung much better.”

McIlroy just won a golf tournament. And he needed to win a golf tournament. But far, far more than he needed anything on a scorecard, he needed this week. McIlroy needed to have fun.

This is not a drill. Rory McIlroy singing Don't Stop Believing pic.twitter.com/y5PkEDoqo4 — Brody Miller (@BrodyAMiller) April 28, 2024

This all began with a “really drunken lunch” after their Ryder Cup win last fall. McIlroy asked Lowry if they could team up for the Zurich Classic — the PGA Tour ’s only team event. Lowry has played this event before but, fearful of rejection, never asked McIlroy to team up. McIlroy sent Lowry a Christmastime text confirming. He was coming to New Orleans.

Fast forward to Saturday night, and just off Bourbon Street in the French Quarter at a classic white tablecloth Creole joint called Arnaud’s, McIlroy and Lowry received a standing ovation from the other diners. This isn’t even some casual weekend in Louisiana. It’s Jazz Fest. It’s NFL Draft week. The Pelicans are in the playoffs. Yet the people were so psyched to have the No. 2 player in the world they filled TPC Louisiana with the largest galleries anyone can recall and applauded them at restaurants. One TV reporter joked the last athlete to receive that was Reggie Bush nearly two decades ago.

“It was weird for me,” Lowry said. “That stuff doesn’t happen to me.”

“It doesn’t happen to me, either!” McIlroy joked.

“He’s getting old,” Lowry said with a cheeky grin. “But he can still move the needle a little bit.  Rory brings a crowd, and people love him.”

A little context. McIlroy isn’t having a very good season. It became a running gag last week that Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, is outearning McIlroy in 2024. And McIlroy has been having a stressful few years. He was the face of the PGA Tour in its war with LIV and the most public-facing policy board member. Then, he got blindsided by the PGA Tour entering into a framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (LIV’s owners), calling himself a “sacrificial lamb” as they sent him to speak to the media the next day.

He then reportedly lost a power battle over the future of the tour to Patrick Cantlay and decided to leave the board, with Sports Illustrated reporting Cantlay and others like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth focused more on catering to the tour’s elites. McIlroy then changed his tune and campaigned for unification with LIV. He rubbed people the wrong way, criticizing Spieth publicly for saying the PGA Tour didn’t “need” the Saudis. He consistently made comments about the desire for money ruining the sport. He got in an awkward incident at the Players Championship with playing partners Spieth and Viktor Hovland.

Oh, and the golf has suffered. It’s all relative. He’s still top 30 nearly every week, but has just one PGA Tour finish better than 19th all season. When he finished T22 at the Masters two weeks ago, he got questions about whether he needed to blow up his swing and do a full reset.

Then, he went to New Orleans.

McIlroy was not locked in this week, at least not for most of the week. This week was about having fun with his old buddy Shane. They didn’t even practice when they got in Tuesday because the course was too busy, so they messed around at the chipping green instead. During the Wednesday Pro-Am, they hardly even played every other shot. They seemed to hit when they felt like it while walking and talking the rest. They crushed chargrilled oysters from Drago’s on the 10th hole and teased each other.

Who knows how worried they even were as they entered the seventh hole Sunday five back of the leaders. Yes, they’re competitors and want to win, but they were just going with the flow.

Then, McIlroy got hot. Playing alternate shot, they birdied four of the next five holes to get one back. McIlroy dropped a saucy little club twirl that he hasn’t shown in years on a perfect iron shot on 14. And right around that time, he clearly started to want it a bit more. When he put his drive on 16 into a bunker, he bent over and held his head down for a full minute in frustration.

But no worries. Lowry hit a perfect wedge from the bunker to the center of the green, and McIlroy hit a wide-breaking putt to take a share of the lead.

On the par-3 17th, Lowry’s tee shot flew into the crowd and he later missed a tough par putt. He was visibly disappointed with himself, but McIlroy speedily chased him off the green to say, “Hey, Shane. That was a good putt.”

“Rory is there backing me up this week,” Lowry said, “and he was a great teammate, and he made me believe in myself. It was good to have him there to do that.”

They then birdied 18 to send it to a playoff, and thanks to a missed putt by Martin Trainer in the playoff, McIlroy won his 25th PGA Tour tournament and Lowry earned himself a spot in the remaining PGA Tour signature events. Teamwork.

Yeah, maybe McIlroy was the key to the win this week, but there’s a chance Lowry was the key to a much-needed week for McIlroy. Because he admitted this week was about getting away from the stress.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The reason that Shane and I both started to play golf is because we thought it was fun at some stage in our life.  I think sort of reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week, it can always help.”

And as the event finished, tournament organizers could be seen celebrating the coup of one of the game’s biggest stars winning and possibly coming back next year to defend his title. This isn’t exactly one of the tour’s bigger events. They’d kill for McIlroy in the field again. So he was asked, “Has anyone started trying to sell you on returning?”

“I don’t think they need to try,” McIlroy said. “I think we’re coming back.”
