If you’re traveling with young kids in tow, you cannot bypass the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise in Panama City Beach, FL , located behind the Boatyard restaurant by the Lighthouse Marina. Take a ride on a real 85-foot pirate ship equipped with canon and pirate flags!

Captain “Fearless” Phil and his terrific pirate crew make sure that there is never a dull moment during this two-hour cruise. The kids will be busy and entranced the entire time. Your faithful pirate captain is there to direct the ship and make sure everyone is doing their job. He also plays lively pirate music to encourage everyone to play their roles and dance to the tunes.

After all the kids are supplied with water guns for a fun wet time, the boys get to be deck hands as they mop or ‘swab the deck.’ The girls will take their time getting their faces painted and wearing pirate hats. Then it’s time to get serious about this swashbuckling adventure full of sword fights and pirate games. As things begin to get really exciting, the cannons are ignited and a sunken treasure is retrieved from the ocean depths with treasure for all the kids. All of the plundering young pirates will receive some type of sea roving treasure with their adventure on the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise in Panama City Beach, Florida .

The Sea Dragon is great for most kids from the age of 2 or 3 up to about 9-13. The upper ages just depends on the individual and if they’re willing to still let loose and be a kid. Take care and have an adult guide the younger ones through all the activities, especially the dungeon, just so they don’t get pushed around in all the excitement.

Prices for this amusing two-hour cruise are very reasonable for the quality and entertainment value. Compared to other tourist attractions, most families feel that the Sea Dragon offers a great deal for the money. Remember to check the website for printable coupons for discounts on these listed prices. An example would be $2.00 off adult tickets for trips before 4 pm. If you choose to take the sunset cruise, add an additional $2.00 per ticket. In addition to the spectacular view while roaming over the ocean as the sun goes down, the trip at sunset is usually a little longer and definitely cooler.

Adults and kids will all enjoy the view along the entire tour. Once the captain and his crew take the kids below deck for fun and games, parents of the more independent kids will have the most part of the two hours to enjoy themselves. There are plenty of places for the adults to sit and enjoy a cool drink while the kids play. The snack bar is stocked with sodas, bottled water, pink lemonade, “Dragon tail” hot dogs and other snacks. There’s also plenty of cold beer, margaritas, wine and rum punch. Be prepared for the kids to ask for one of the many souvenirs that are sold.

Hats and sunscreens are a must for this cruise with tons of bright exposure to the outdoors on the water. Don’t forget that things do get a bit wet while the kids play with the squirt guns, so a towel and an extra shirt would come in handy for them.

Reservations for the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise are very highly recommended. You’ll probably need to give them 2-5 days advance notice since this is a very popular and much enjoyed excursion. They close for the season during the last week of October and reopen for the new season in very early March. Always check their website calendar for exact dates and for scheduled cruise times. Our family booked the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise on our August vacation to Panama City Beach . Some of us had been on a pirate ship cruise before in Destin, Florida, and we had a great experience, so we figured the kids would love to go on this trip too!

Booking a pirate ship cruise in Panama City Beach, Fl

The only available pirate ship cruise in Panama City Beach, Florida is the Sea Dragon. You can book a pirate cruise through their website . The cruises run March-October and will frequently sell out, especially in the summer months. Make sure to book in advance!

All ages are welcome aboard the ship. Infants can be in carriers or car seat carriers, but no strollers are allowed onboard for safety purposes. However, wheelchairs are welcome!

Here are the ticket prices as of October 2023:

• Adults (15+): $27
• Seniors (60+): $23
• Children (14 & under): $19
• Toddlers (1-2 years): $13
• Infants: FREE

Sunset cruises are $2 more per ticket!

The pirate cruise is a 2-hour excursion that stays within a half-mile of the shore. This increases the chances of seeing dolphins as well as keeping the ship in calmer waters. The cruises are rarely canceled due to weather (rain usually only lasts 10-15 minutes, and if longer, activities can be moved inside) but you will receive a phone call in the unlikely event of a cancellation.

There are plenty of seats on the ship for adults to sit after the kids get up for activities (which is basically moments after leaving shore.) You can choose to sit or stand during the cruise!

Activities on the Panama City Beach pirate ship

Prepare to be entertained! The kids will be loving it from the moment they step onto the ship!

Captain “Fearless Phil” and his crew will be singing and dancing, and encouraging everyone to sing along. They’ll teach the kids some pirate language (don’t worry – only the family-friendly kind!) and put on a little skit.

The kids will love it when they “fire the cannon” and when the sunken treasure is pulled up from the sea! They’ll even each get to go home with a piece of treasure!

During the cruise, the kids will be taken to get face paintings below deck. On our cruise, while the girls got face paintings, the boys had to swab the deck! Then they switched and the boys got their faces painted while the girls came back on deck.

You can expect toy sword fights and water gun battles! During the activities, Captain Fearless Phil will be on the lookout for dolphins and announce when he spots them so everyone has a chance to stop and look!

It really is non-stop fun activities for the kids throughout the entire cruise. It was definitely one of the highlights of our family vacation, and we would choose to do it again in a heartbeat!

Answers to your questions about the Sea Dragon Pirate Ship Cruise

Are there food and drinks available on the panama city beach pirate cruise.

They don’t sell full meals on the Sea Dragon, but you can get hot dogs, chips, snacks, and drinks. And the food is at a surprisingly reasonable price!

There are fun souvenir cups if you are willing to pay the extra price, and there are alcoholic drinks for sale as well.

Will we see dolphins on a pirate cruise in Panama City Beach?

It’s likely! During our 2-hour excursion, we saw dolphins at least 3 separate times. They were easiest to view from the top deck of the ship. The top deck has the most seating, a good view of the scenery, as well as a view looking down at the activities on the lower deck.

If you’re hoping to save money on your Panama City Beach vacation and want to do the pirate cruise, you could eliminate a dolphin cruise from your itinerary since you will likely see them from the pirate ship!

Are there restrooms on the ship?

There are restrooms located downstairs on the ship, and they were very clean!

Tips for a fun pirate ship excursion

I have a few extra tips to make your Panama City Beach pirate ship cruise more memorable!

Consider dressing your kids for the part! They can get some accessories onboard the ship, such as a cardboard pirate hat (which was free.) Pirate-themed souvenirs are also sold onboard, such as swords, eye patches, and other items. However, you can buy these things at a dollar store before your trip if you plan ahead!

If your child is having a birthday, let the crew know as soon as you board the ship! The crew will call out their names during the cruise!

Be very careful going up and down the stairs, and make sure you assist your small kids! It can be dangerous when the boat rocks even slightly!

The cruise is aimed towards kids aged 10 and under, but even older kids had fun watching! Adults can choose to sit on the top deck sipping an alcoholic beverage and watching for dolphins the entire time if they want to just relax!

The “Sea Dragon” Pirate Cruise is one of Panama City Beach’s premier vacation attractions. Our 2 hour cruises offer something for everyone in your family. We provide an exceptional sightseeing experience of the waters, shoreline and wildlife near the entrance to St. Andrews Bay. The captain will point out numerous species of birds and fish during the cruise and if you’re lucky he’ll scream out, “There she blows!” as you spot some of our playful bottled nosed dolphins. The sea is full of surprises so we never know for sure just what we might see during our cruises. There are even rumors of mermaids sometimes being spotted on the rocks of the jetties. They wave to us and try and lure us into running aground.

In addition to the great sightseeing aboard our ship be prepared to sing along with our amazing soundtrack. Our mix of music is upbeat, fun and cleverly in sync with the activities happening on the main deck. And speaking of activities, imagine the fun your kids will have sword fighting, swabbing the deck, firing the “Kid cannon”, reading a treasure map, finding a sunken treasure and sharing the loot. Plus they’ll have a water gun fight, get their face painted, limbo, have a pirate dance party and get a pirate tattoos. It is literally non-stop activity for the kids!

If you get hungry or thirsty our galley bar has plenty of cold drinks and snacks to hold you over until we return to shore. We have cold beer, wine, margaritas and rum punch as well as bottled water, sodas and lemonade. Our snacks include hot dogs, chips, cookies, peanuts, beef jerky, fruit bites and more. We also have plenty of pirate souvenirs! Even though we be pirates our prices won’t hold you hostage. We make every effort to be reasonable.

Our ship, the “Sea Dragon”, is a modern day replica of the ships that plundered these waters centuries ago. Even though her exterior is adorned with ancient riggin’, beneath her steel hull lay modern day bathrooms, engines, generator and safety equipment. Each year we undergo a rigorous safety inspection by the US Coast Guard. The Coast Guard works with us to provide the safest environment possible for you and your family.

The “Sea Dragon” Pirate Cruise operates from March though October . Our schedule or trips varies throughout the year. Visit our website to view our calendar of departure times. This is Panama’s one and only party pirate ship experience. We will be setting out across the high seas in our 110-foot Spanish Galleon for a day of fun in the sun, swimming, music, and dancing.

Leaving from Panama City we will head out to Taboga Island where we will stop just in front of the bay for swimming, diving, and rope swinging among our floaties toys fleet. Some will be able to relax and sunbathe on one of the decks, some will prefer to read a book, while others will be able to enjoy the music on board while having one of our cocktails. Later, we will raise our anchors to start our return trip to the city where we will be arriving by sunset. On board, we will have, for an extra cost, different options of food, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks .

The Taboga Pirate Experience trip is fun and exciting for all types of passengers. We will have music and dancing on the main deck for those who are in the mood for a party atmosphere. But the pirate ship is big, the music will never be overpowering, and families and older people will have plenty of pirate-themed fun and water activities to keep everyone happy and entertained.

You can join one of the scheduled cruises during the daytime, or book early and set sail at sunset (for a little bit extra).

2nd Time Was Even Better Than The 1st!

Reviewed May 13, 2015 This was our 2nd trip on the pirate ship & it was even better than the 1st one he did last September!! Our 5 year old loved every part & we even seen lots of dolphins & 3 babies! The crew are constantly playing & keeping the kids entertained, the captain fearless Phill is also very funny & very knowledgable about the area. It shows he loves what he does and will take the time to talk to & take pictures with the kids too!All in all we had a great trip & will be back a 3rd time soon.

A “Must Do” If You Have Kids!

Reviewed May 9, 2015 We took our 4 year old, and he had a blast! The staff is great with the kids and keeps them busy for the entire trip! Dolphin sightings, sword fights with pirates, pulling up a treasure chest from the ocean, tattoos, dancing, cannon shooting, story telling, etc. An amazing time for kids and adults! My husband and I enjoyed the cruise as much as our son! Definitely worth the money!

The “Sea Dragon” Pirate Cruise is locally owned and operated by Capt. “Fearless” Phil and his family, who are locals to Panama City and have extensive experience at sea. The business operates on the principle of giving visitors value for their hard-earned money through wholesome sightseeing adventure. Captain “Fearless” Phil has experience as a scuba diving instructor, First Aid/CPR instructor, and lifeguard, and he loves working with kids!

This cruise will take you back in time to the carefree days of pirates. For two hours cruise, there will be dolphin sightings, great music, and non-stop pirate activities for kids. Beers, sodas, snacks, t-shirts, and pirate souvenirs are available for purchase on deck as well. Parents can relax, as attentive crew members will ensure children are always safe.

What to Expect

Are your kids musical? If so, they will love the pirate sing-along soundtrack! Music is fun, upbeat, and synced to the activities happening on deck. By the end of the tour, the whole family will by humming pirate songs!

Pirate activities for the kids include sword fighting, swabbing the deck, firing the “kid cannon,” reading a treasure map, finding sunken treasure, and sharing the loot. In addition, there is a water gun fight, face painting, and a pirate dance party with pirate tattoos for kids. If parents are looking for a little down time, this is the perfect way to keep your kids entertained while you relax with a cold beer on deck! 

For the duration of the cruise, the boat will not venture more than a half mile from shore. There’s simply more to see closer to land. While sightings are not guaranteed, Captain “Fearless” Phil will do all he can to ensure an encounter with wild dolphins. He knows the local dolphin habitats and all the best places to find them, so there is usually at least one sighting!

In the event of a rainstorm, there is plenty of room inside for activities to continue. No matter the weather in Panama City Beach , the pirates cannot be stopped!

For adults age 15 and up, tickets cost $27 not including tax. Tickets for seniors 60 and up cost $23. For children ages 3 to 14, the price is $19, and for toddlers age 1 and 2, it is $13. Infants under 12 months are free; however, by law they are still required to receive tickets, so when making reservations, be sure to mention any infants in your company!

For an extra $2 on all tickets, you will receive the added benefit of a sunset cruise. Sunsets on the Gulf are a kaleidoscope of colors and certainly worth an extra $2 to experience!

Panama City Beach, Florida, has something for everyone and is one of our favorite places to spend time in the Sunshine State. Today, I want to share some of our favorite fun things to do in Panama City Beach with kids! 

We have done pretty much all of these, so I will include my photos and some of my best tips for visiting each location on your family trip to Panama City Beach, or PCB, as the locals call it! 

Things To Do In Panama City Beach With Kids

Get ready for sun, sea, and sand as we uncover the top things to do in PCB with kids. From strolling  Shell Island  to buckling in for a wild airboat tour, this list guarantees a family vacation filled with joy, laughter, and memories that’ll last a lifetime.

But, first, I want to quickly touch on where Panama City Beach is, the different types of accommodations for families in Panama City Beach, and the Panama City Beach airport. 

Where Is Panama City Beach?

Panama City Beach is located in the northwestern part of Florida along the Gulf of Mexico, known as the Florida panhandle. This area is renowned for its stunning white sandy beaches and crystal-clear emerald waters. 

Situated approximately 95 miles southwest of the state capital, Tallahassee, Panama City Beach is a popular  Florida tourist destination  known for its vibrant atmosphere, water sports, and diverse recreational activities. 

Family Accommodations in Panama City Beach

Compared to other popular beach communities in this area, such as  30A , visitors to Panama City Beach will find plenty of beachfront accommodations. The coast is lined with  hotels  and condominium-style  vacation rentals .

Our favorite hotels include the  Holiday Inn Resort Panama City Beach , the  Hyatt Place Beachfront  Panama City Beach, and the Gulf-front  Holiday Inn Express Panama City Beach . All offer large pools featuring lazy rivers and family-friendly rooms, and the latter two also have complimentary breakfast!  

Panama City Beach Airport

The Panama City Beach airport might confuse you because it’s not called that. The local airport is called Northwest Florida Beaches Airport (ECP). It is set inland for about 20 minutes, but there is no shortage of Ubers or shuttles.

19+ Top Things To Do In Panama City Beach With Kids

So, let’s dive in and look at 19+ fun things to do in Panama City Beach with kids. Mixing beach and pool days with outings and adventures, your family can easily spend a week here and have enough things to do!  

Please note that many of these activities are seasonal, so please verify they are open and secure any required advance tickets before visiting.

1. Visit Shell Island 

Grab your sunscreen and hop on a boat to this pristine paradise. This primitive barrier island is one of my favorite places! Only accessible by boat, it does require a little planning ahead. Our favorite way to get there is by renting a pontoon boat for the day, but there is also a shuttle and organized boat outings. 

In Summer and Fall, when the water is warmest, the  Paradise Adventures waterpark  in the bay is really fun for kids!

2. Sea Dragon Pirates Cruise

If you have young kids, they will get a kick out of this exciting 2-hour family Pirate cruise!

Board a real pirate ship and enjoy dolphin sightings, music, and non-stop pirate activities for the kids. Parents can relax and enjoy the coastal breeze as the crew keeps the kids entertained with sword fighting, swabbing the deck, finding treasure, and, of course, having a pirate dance party. And yes, there is a cannon!

3. Pier Park: Shopping, Dining, & Fun

It’s fun to stroll along the bright and colorful buildings as you enjoy shopping at the 120+ stores. Families can dine at iconic family vacation spots such as Margaritaville and Dick’s Last Resort. However, Pier Park offers a lot more! 

Here, you can ride the famous Panama City Beach  Skywheel,  enjoy an IMAX movie, play at Dave and Buster’s, and tackle the Mirror Maze or Pirate’s Quest Laser Tag.

4. Gulf World: Swim With Dolphins In Panama City Beach

Dive into the wonders of marine life at  Gulf World PCB . From kid friendly dolphin shows to special interactive exhibits, your kids will be fascinated and sure to enjoy the Gulf World. However, please know this is a smaller place and different from sites like SeaWorld or the  Georgia Aquarium . 

However, they do offer a few different  30-minute dolphin encounter experiences . I recommend booking these in advance! 

5. Spend A Day At The Beach

I can’t go any further without mentioning the beach. With so many fun things to do in Panama City Beach with kids, it may be tempting to overplan your trip. But please leave plenty of time for the beach! 

Hopefully, you are staying at a  condo or hotel directly on the beach , but even if you aren’t, just know that Panama City Beach has a lot of public beach access compared to places like 30A, where most of the  30A beaches are private . If you aren’t staying beachfront, consider going to St. Andrews State Park (more on that later). 

Also, at many of the beaches, you can do banana boat rides and even parasailing!  

Please pay attention to the beach flags. Knee deep is too deep on red flag days, and the water is closed when you see double red flags flying. This is due to dangerous rip currents. Please do not let your kids in the water when there are red flags. Also, to learn more about the beach flag system and sign up for current beach conditions text alerts  here . 

6. Wild Thang Airboat Tours 

We always drive past this place on the way to  our condos on 30A , and it’s still on our bucket list. However, people have nothing but good things to say about it. So, I feel confident recommending it to you! 

Hop on an airboat and take a thrilling ride through the marshes and backwaters, searching for alligators, dolphins, and birds! They offer 1/2-hour rides, 1-hour rides, and even night rides!

7. Ride The Scream Machine: High-Speed Speedboat Thrill Ride

Hold on to your hats!  The Scream Machine  is not your average boat ride; it’s a thrill-packed adventure on the high seas. Feel the wind in your hair as you embark on a high-speed escapade, perfect for the whole family.

Kids must be at least 38″ tall, and you will get wet on this exhilarating one-hour boat ride. We haven’t done this yet ourselves, but I always see it listed among the top things to do in Panama City Beach with kids

8. Enjoy St. Andrews State Park 

A true gem, St. Andrews State Park is a great place to spend the day. With hiking trails, white sand beaches, and opportunities for birdwatching, it’s a nature lover’s paradise for families seeking a day in the sun. This is one of our favorite cheap things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida.

One of the most popular areas here is the jetties. Kids play on the rocks and snorkel in the shallow waters of St. Andrews Bay as they watch the boats come and go. You can even take one of the  shuttles to Shell Island  from here! 

Other popular Florida State Parks in the area include Camp Helen State Park, Grayton Beach State Park, and Eden Gardens State Park.

9. Wonderworks Museum Panama City Beach

This is one of my go-to rainy-day recommendations for my guests at our  30A Airbnb rentals . However, it’s everyone else’s, too! So, it can get busy on rainy days, so consider it for one of those mornings where you just need to get everyone out of the sun for a bit! 

You can’t miss this 29,000 square feet educational and entertaining museum as it’s housed in an upside-down building. Kids will surely get a kick out of it, and my two kids have loved visiting over the years!

10. Book A Catamaran Sunset Cruise or Daytime Snorkel Trip

This is my favorite thing to do in Panama City Beach, Florida! Paradise Adventures offers wonderful  daytime or evening catamaran cruises  that are kid-friendly! 

So, climb aboard for a breathtaking cruise along the Gulf of Mexico. Watch as the sky transforms before your eyes, creating a magical backdrop for quality family time. Don’t forget the camera – these moments are picture-perfect. This is also one of my favorite things to do in Panama City Beach for adults.

11. Coconut Creek Family Fun Park

Putt-putt your way through one or both of the 18-hour mini-golf courses for family fun at Coconut Creek. Or, opt for the Gran Maze. Kids 5 and under pay for free! This is one of the best things to do in Panama City Beach at night for families. 

In the Panama City Beach area, you will also find many other great mini golf courses, go-karts, arcades, and fun parks!

12. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not: Oddities and Amazements

One of TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice 2023 award winners, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, promises an eccentric adventure for the whole family. From bizarre artifacts to mind-boggling illusions, it’s sure to elicit some interesting reactions from the kids!  

Plan 1-2 hours for this museum. It’s another great rainy day or too-much-sun inside activity in PCB.

13. Off-shore Fishing: Reel in Family Fun

Cast a line and reel in the fun with an off-shore fishing adventure!  

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer, the Gulf waters near Panama City Beach offer some of the best fishing around. 

There are quite a variety of options when it comes to off-shore fishing. Visitors can plan in advance and book all-day deep-sea fishing trips or just adventure out for a couple of hours on a  Captain Anderson vessel .

The best way to see the options is on the  Visit Panama City Beach Fishing Charter page . There are almost 60 options listed! However, please remember that you need somewhere to keep your catch for the remainder of your trip and a way to get it home! On our last outing, we caught the maximum amount of snapper and are still eating it. 

14. Summer Fun At Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Summers are hot on the Gulf Coast, and for years, both visitors and locals alike have cooled off at Shipwreck Island Waterpark. Centrally located in Panama City Beach, Shipwreck Island has thrilling slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. This waterpark is always a great time for the entire family, and it’s consistently rated as one of the top things to do in Panama City Beach with kids.

15. Sharky’s Beachfront Dining With A Sandy Playground

Savor the flavors of Panama City Beach at Sharky’s. Adults can enjoy beachfront dining under the giant tiki while the kids run around and play on the playgrounds (on the sand). The ocean breeze and fresh seafood make for an unforgettable family meal. 

Also, we always try to go when they have live music! It’s one of the most iconic and unique things to do in Panama City Beach, Florida.

16. Dolphin Watching In Panama City Beach

It’s common to see dolphins frolicking in the Gulf from your beach chair while in Panama City Beach, Florida!  

Additionally, you can set sail on a dolphin-watching excursion and witness these playful creatures in their natural habitat. It’s a magical experience that’ll leave your family in awe as they chase behind you in the wake of the boat. 

You may want to consider a  private dolphin-watching trip . Additionally, several companies offer group dolphin-watching trips, and below is one of our favorites! 

17. ZooWorld: The Panama City Beach Zoo

For a dose of furry, feathery fun, ZooWorld is your go-to destination. You can even opt for up-close encounters with exotic animals, including a Snuggle A Lemur and Pet A Sloth! This small zoo is easy to navigate and makes for a great educational outing. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Panama City Beach with kids of all ages.

18. Sandcastle Lessons Panama City Beach

Want to really impress your kids? Book a sandcastle lesson! 

That Sandcastle Guy  and  Beach Sand Sculptures  offer private sandcastle-making lessons for your family. You need to book these in advance! Also, these lessons can be pricy. I consider them best for slightly older kids who listen and can follow directions well. This really is one of those fun activities for teens! 

19. Plan A Day Trip From PCB

There are so many other great things to do within an hour of Panama City Beach, many even closer! Day trips include visiting  30A , driving up to  Florida Caverns State Park , a kayak or canoe outing to  Cypress Springs , family  horseback riding near Panama City Beach , and so much more!
