The historic town square of tpurs

Was here on a Friday evening walk and the place was buzzing with its many pubs full with students out to enjoy the springtime sunshine and the start of the weekend. Was definitely a lively place.

Always a nice place even when it is -1 there was a lot of people...it is really the best place of the city...

I love this town square in Tours! The buildings are so old and amazing - so charming, just like something out of a movie or story book. I would say that a visit to the square is a must-see when visiting Tours. I took a million pictures and simply fell in love with everything here. I would think this would be better to visit during the summer so that you can sit out in the square and have lunch, drinks, etc. and just absorb the charm!

A beautiful square and well worth a visit. Very traditional and full of history. We loved sitting having a coffee and admiring the interesting and unique buildings. A must-see.

Good place to go out or eat in the evening, lots of nightlife and quite quaint in a medieval way. Best to book a better restaurant as the place we went was a bit ordinary, can't remember the name.

Not sure what all the hooplas is about. My friend recommended it. But it is just a hotel with a lot of old buildings around. There are restaurants and shops around as well. I enjoyed my visit, but won't say it is must see in Tours.

The History Of Place Plumereau

Place Plumereau is an area located in Tours, France. It has a rich history that dates back to the early Middle Ages when it was first used as an administrative center for the local government. The square was expanded over time and eventually became a major hub of activity and entertainment in the city throughout subsequent centuries. It also served as an important site for religious ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

Originally known as ‘Grande Place’, it wasn’t until later on that this area became known as Place Plumereau due to its proximity to Rue de la Plumerie (Lace Street) which is where plumage merchants could be found selling their items during the 1600s. Since then, the name has stuck and become widely recognized by locals and visitors alike.

In 1772, a group of architects constructed several Baroque style buildings around the perimeter of Place Plumereau including l’Hotel des Chevaliers du Poitou (the Knight’s Inn), Maison Poulain (Poulain House), Maison Michelin (Michelin House) among others; each boasting unique architectural designs that remain standing today adding to its picturesque atmosphere which attracts tourists from all over Europe every year.

What to see and do in historic Tours in the heart of the Loire Valley

Cobbled streets, lined with half-timbered houses and shops in ancient buildings in Tours, Loire Valley

Tours in the department of Centre is the gateway city to the Loire Valley. It makes for a great base to visit the area. But, it’s a terrific place to visit in its own right with wide and grand avenues, a charming old town and Haussmanesque style architecture mixed with medieval, Renaissance and modern. In parts it’s reminiscent of Paris and has in fact been acting capital of France on more than one occasion.

The city centre has a lively air. The old part of town is home to a famous cathedral and winding cobbled streets lined with cafés and restaurants and half-timbered houses.

Discover museums, pretty streets to roam, quirky boutiques and lots of shops. There’s loads to do when you’re not tasting wine in vineyards or chateau hopping in the countryside around.

At just an hour from Paris by train it’s very easy to reach…

Cobbled streets and captivating cafés

Colourful umbrellas over tables set out in Place Plumereau, a popular square for aperitifs in Tours, Loire Valley

Tours has a laidback vibe and nowhere is this more obvious than in the charming pedestrianised Place Plumereau in Vieux Tours (the old part of town). Once called the carroi aux chapeau, the hat market, it is lined with 15th century wood-framed and stone-gabled houses, many of them have been converted into cafés, bistros and restaurants.

This little square was voted the best place in France for an aperitif – it’s easy to see why. Tables and chairs spill out onto the square, colourful umbrellas add a splash of colour, an ancient mulberry tree presides. An exuberant atmosphere hangs over the square thanks to it being popular throughout the day for coffee, lunch, ice cream, aperitifs and dinner. Take your pick from a whole raft of excellent eateries (try Les Trois Rois for somewhere atmospheric, pretty and loved by the locals).

All round Place Plumereau are a hodgepodge of cobbled streets with more cafés, restaurants and shops.

Historic Tours

Woman walks down a cobbled street to a leafy square in Tours, Loire Valley

The Cathedral of Tours is a masterpiece of architecture ranging from flamboyant Gothic to Romanesque and Renaissance. There are some truly spectacular stained glass windows, some of them almost 800 years old. Started in 1239 it took some 300 years to complete and the charming cloisters of the Cathedral featured in Balzac’s Curé de Tours (the character of Madame Garnard lived there).

Inside, a marble tomb is the last resting place of the heirs to the Valois dynasty, the young sons of Charles VIII and Anne of Bretagne. When Charles VIII died (1498) she married his cousin, Louis XII, as he wanted her lands. He had to divorce his wife Jeanne who was interrogated in Tours by church judges who ruled the marriage had never been consummated. The result left him free to marry Anne (Jeanne was later canonised to became Saint Joan of Valois). Anne and Louis had two daughters, one of whom married Francis I, which led to the formal union of France and Brittany.

Where old Tours meets new Tours

Woman holding a printing block demonstrates how wallpaper is made to centuries old traditions in Tours

There really are enough historic buildings here to please the most ardent history lover. Don’t miss the Musée de Beaux Arts which is located in the former Archbishop’s Palace. It houses a wonderful collection of paintings, ceramics and furnishings including silk panels. Tours was once a thriving silk production centre with 20,000 weavers, after Louis XI (King from 1461-1483) moved production from Lyons saying people were too lazy there.

It’s a mix of old and new here. And they’re not done yet. There’s an ongoing programme of opening up walkways along the river, providing more places to eat, drink and shop. In 2017 a brand new and unique art centre opened, the Centre de Création Contemporaine Olivier Debré . It is contemporary, innovative and hosts mesmerising exhibitions.

And, bringing the old and new together, visit the Atelier d’Ofard , where wallpaper is made by hand to the old methods used in the 17th century. If you’ve ever wondered how the amazing wallpaper you see in Chateaux, such as in the bedroom of Marie-Antoinette at Versailles, then this visit reveals the secrets and history of wallpaper making using wooden blocks and hand mixed pigment. It’s a unique and fascinating tour.

All this discovery builds up an appetite. Luckily you’re in the right place to truly indulge – click here to read about where to eat out in Tours , the places the locals love!

Place Plumereau in Tours, Loire Valley 11

We haven’t had the best of weather this last week in France, but I can honestly say it has not dampened our spirits one little bit; France is glorious even in the rain. Although the sun was not shining, Friday evening was dry and warm.

Place Plumereau in Tours, Loire Valley 11

I feel we have really discovered the real France, the stuff of Disney movies, winding little streets, gothic buildings, castles, princesses and architecture that at times makes you want to weep it is so very beautiful.

Place Plumereau was one of those squares that make you grin from ear to ear. In fact as Chris, Darren and the boys found tables and ordered drinks , Donna and I wandered around marvelling at its beauty, people watching and taking photos.

Place Plumereau in Tours, Loire Valley

Locals and tourists all mingled together enjoying the chilled out, happy atmosphere Place Plumereau just oozes. It really is one of those moments I will remember forever, very much like when we stumbles across Placa Reial for the first time.

That excitement of discovering such beauty, and knowing you will return one day but will always remember that first visit.

Place Plumereau and Vieux Tours together to form the charming heart of Tours. It is a historic square surrounded by timber-framed buildings, lively cafes, and restaurants. This vibrant square is renowned for its convivial atmosphere, making it a favourite gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. During my time, in Tours, every weekend the square was always active, many bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops were always filled with happy people. Versailles

Visit and tour Paris, the capital of France, and spend three nights there altogether - two at the beginning and one at the end.

Spend four nights in the Loire Valley, the garden of France.  With its mild climate the Loire was the favourite residence of kings and their kin.  It remains a corner of paradise, with its dream-like palaces, elegant towns, quiet landscapes and majestic rivers.  The vineyards are a feast to the eyes and their fruits a joy to the palate.

Castle, palace and regional highlights include the Montmartre district, the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, a Seine Cruise, and Notre Dame in Paris; Fontainebleau Palace, Orléans, Chenonceau Palace, Amboise Castle and village, Manor Clos-Lucé, Cheverny and Chambord Châteaux, Blois Castle and town, Villandry Château, and Tours.

After breakfast, board your sparkling clean coach to go for a guided tour of VERSAILLES, perhaps the most famous palace in the world.  From 1682, when King Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in 1789, the Court of Versailles was the centre of power in France.  Spend several hours visiting the Palace of Palaces and the famous gardens with the fountains.

In the afternoon we go up to the second floor of the EIFFEL TOWER for majestic views.  This tower, built for the 1889 World's Fair, is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and is the most visited paid monument anywhere.

Day 4  –  FONTAINEBLEAU, ORLÉANS, LOIRE VALLEY

We leave Paris this morning to visit nearby FONTAINEBLEAU.  Used by kings of France from the 12th century, the royal hunting lodge of Fontainebleau was enlarged and embellished in the 16th century by François I, combining Renaissance and French artistic traditions.

We continue on to ORLÉANS, the city which Joan of Arc liberated in 1429.  Breaking the English siege was one of the great episodes in the history of France, and marked the rebirth of a country and of a people that had been sinking into despair.  Enjoy free time here for lunch.

Later continue to your chateau in the heart of the Loire Valley, our new home for the next four nights.

>   Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, guided tour of Fontainebleau Castle, three-course dinner with menu choices, one beverage, and coffee or tea, hotel - Château de Razay in Céré La Ronde

Fontainebleau

Day 5  –  CHENONCEAU PALACE, AMBOISE CASTLE, CLOS-LUCÉ

In the morning we go first to visit nearby CHENONCEAU, the "Ladies Castle".  This beautiful castle stretches across the River Cher in a harmonious natural setting of water, greenery, gardens and trees.  Over a period of 400 years this castle was shaped by women, royal wives, mistresses and queens.

We continue on to Amboise for lunch, and afterwards visit the CHÂTEAU D'AMBOISE, once a very important royal residence and home for several French kings.  The palace is a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and is now less than a third of the size it was in the 16th century.

Leonardo da Vinci lived nearby in MANOR CLOS-LUCÉ as a guest of King Francis.  We visit this palace, now a museum with period furniture, sketches and working models of the ideas of this renaissance genius.

>  Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, entrance fees and guided tours of the above castles, three-course dinner, hotel - Château de Razay in Céré La Ronde

Chenonceau

Day 6  –  CHEVERNY, CHAMBORD, BLOIS CASTLE AND TOWN

This morning our first visit is to the CHÂTEAU DE CHEVERNY.  The symmetric design and harmonious grandeur of the façade of are characteristic features of the period of Henri IV and Louis XIII.  The interior is sumptuously appointed, with beautiful furniture, sculptures, gilt work, marble and multi-coloured paneling.

We continue with a short ride to CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBORD, the largest by far of all the Loire chateaux, built on a scale foreshadowing that of the Palace of Versailles.

On to the Royal City of Blois where we visit the ROYAL CHÂTEAU DE BLOIS, the residence of several French kings.  Built in the middle of the town that it effectively controlled, the Château de Blois comprises several buildings constructed from the 13th to the 17th century around the main courtyard.

Free time for dinner in this beautiful city on the hillside overlooking the river Loire where many of the medieval streets still remain.

>  Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, entrance fees and tours of the above castles, hotel - Château de Razay in Céré La Ronde

Chambord Palace

Day 7  –  VILLANDRY, TOURS

Today we visit CHÂTEAU DE VILLANDRY, one of the last great Renaissance chateaux to be built in the Loire Valley.  Villandry’s international fame is based largely on its gardens, among the most fascinating in all of France and Europe.

In the afternoon we drive to TOURS, the capital of Touraine, a thriving economic and cultural centre.   Go for a stroll in Place Plumereau, a picturesque and animated square, once a marketplace, lined with 15th century timber-framed houses alternating with stone facades.  Enjoy a café au lait in the square and get your final Loire Valley souvenirs.

Tonight we are having a nice dinner in a medieval village.

>  Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, entrance fees and tours of the above castles, three-course dinner, hotel - Château de Razay in Céré La Ronde

gardens at Villandry chateau

Day 8  –  PARIS - NOTRE DAME, SEINE RIVER CRUISE

We leave the Loire Valley this morning and head north again to Paris, arriving in time for your lunch break.

We are all saddened by the April 2019 fire at NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL.  After lunch you will have time to see restoration work at the site, but from a distance.

Then a short walk across Île de la Cité to visit SAINTE CHAPELLE, a royal chapel in the Gothic style, part of the residence complex of the Kings of France until the 14th century.  Marvel at one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

Later we board a River Boat for a scenic cruise on the SEINE RIVER.  We see many of the city's most famous landmarks from the river, and pass under many of the three dozen bridges over the river in Paris.

Then a short ride to your overnight hotel near the Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport in Roissy.  Enjoy a great farewell dinner and celebrate a wonderful week in France with your travelling companions.

>  Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, Seine River cruise, three-course dinner, hotel in Paris-Roissy
