Over 80 cruise ships will call to Dún Laoghaire this year bringing a total of 137,000 passengers and 56,000 crew to the area and providing a significant boost to the local economy.

The first ship to arrive this season is the Viking Venus, with many more impressive vessels to follow. Dún Laoghaire Harbour was the second busiest Harbour in Ireland for cruise visits in the last year, only behind Cork/Cobh. The aim is to continue building on this success for the years ahead.

Councillor Denis O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said, “This is a very exciting time for Dún Laoghaire with thousands of visitors arriving in cruise ships and they bring a vibrancy and income to the town and surrounding areas. The continuing success of this initiative has played a huge role in assisting us to restore Dún Laoghaire Harbour, bringing benefits to visitors and locals alike.”

With 43% of passengers* who tender ashore visiting Dún Laoghaire Town and the surrounding area, the cruise industry is continuing to generate significant income and create a range of job opportunities. The benefits of these cruise visits extend beyond the immediate tourism sector, contributing to the restoration of the historic Harbour.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council highlighted, “The benefits of these cruises are obvious with job creation in various roles such as tourist cabin, security staff, and Tender escort boats and the influx of visitors to the area is hugely beneficial to commercial enterprises in the county.”

Pamela Caldwell Pim, Chief Executive Officer of dlr Chamber added, “We are delighted to continue working and collaborating with DLR to promote Dún Laoghaire, and indeed Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown as an attractive centre of culture, historic interest, hospitality, and shopping, and we are all set for the influx of International Cruise Ship tourists, and crews, expected to arrive this year.”

Kyron O’Gorman from the local Powerboat School who tender in the passengers from the cruise liners highlighted, ting equipment, renewing and fitting some fresh flags and we’re all optimistic that the warmer weather arrives soon. Everyone from the ship to the harbour crew are eagerly awaiting the return of the cruises.”

Sightseeing:

Most passengers head straight to Dublin.

The capital city of Ireland is spread over the broad valley of the River Liffey around Dublin Bay in a great sweep of coast from the rocky brow of Howth in the north to the headland of Dalkey in the south, and sheltered by the Wicklow Hills.

In addition to its imposing public buildings, Dublin is particularly rich in architecture of the 18th century with fine Georgian mansions, wide streets and spacious squares. There are fashionable shopping centers and a range of cultural and sporting entertainments.

There are many public parks in Dublin, the most famous of which is Phoenix Park at the western edge of the city. Originally priory land, it became a royal deer park in the 17th century. It is home to the Irish President and the US ambassador to Ireland. Housed in the west wing of Leinster House, The National Gallery has over 2000 paintings.

The National Museum has a collection of Irish antiquities from the Stone Age to medieval times. The most famous exhibits include the eighth-century Ardagh Chalice and Tara Brooch and the 12th-century Cross of Cong. There is also a room devoted to the Easter Rising and War of Independence.

Other museums worth visiting include the Dublin Civic Museum; the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art; the National Library of Ireland and the Royal Irish Academy Library. Trinity College Library houses the eighth-century Book of Kells and the finest collection of early illuminated manuscripts in Ireland.

Trinity College is the city's most famous landmark. Founded by Elizabeth I in 1591, it is noted for its cobbled stone quadrangles and imposing gray college buildings.

Dublin Castle, the seat of British administration from the 12th century to the 1920s, can be found on high ground west of Dame Street and Christ Church Cathedral, one of the city's finest historical buildings, is located at the end of Lord Edward Street.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hop on and off the open top bus tour around the city. Stops at all of the major tourist spots, and you can hop off and on as often as you like. The bus drivers are very funny too - a great way to get a feel for the layout of Dublin. Best to get off the train at Tara Street station and pick up the green HoHo bus at stop 1, outside the Dublin Bus office in O'Connell Street. From Pearce Street Station, walk towards the National Gallery and hop on there.

At the Dun Laoghaire station tickets are available for 30 Euro, which include the train ticket and the green hop on/off bus in Dublin.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Shopping and food.

Special purchases include hand-woven tweed, hand-crocheted woolens and kinds of cotton, sheepskin goods, gold and silver jewelry, Aran knitwear, linen, pottery, Irish crystal, and basketry.

No visit would be complete without discovering the birthplace of Dublin's most famous beverages at the Guinness Brewery and Irish Distillery, both of which welcome visitors while the pubs of Dublin are famed the world over.

The Republic of Ireland is part of the Eurozone, so as in many other European Union countries the currency here is the Euro (symbol: €). Stand Alone Cash machines (ATMs) are widely available in every city and town in the country and credit cards are accepted in 90% of outlets. Fees are not generally charged by Irish ATMs (but beware that your bank may charge a fee).

Dublin (Dun Laoghaire), Ireland

Description.

Dublin has experienced a renaissance. Today, this gracious and cosmopolitan city on the Liffey is one of Europe's premier destinations. The capital of the Republic of Ireland, Dublin is an intimate place that is easy to explore. Stroll past St. Stephen's Green or survey the gray, stone façades of Trinity College, Ireland's oldest university. The city is also remarkably well-preserved - every June 16, scholars retrace the paths of James Joyce's characters in the novel "Ulysses," set in Dublin on June 16, 1904. Dublin possesses a storied history. A settlement has existed on the banks of the River Liffey for at least a millennium and a half. Succeeding waves of Gaelic, Viking, Norman and English invaders have left their mark on the city. Dún Laoghaire gets its name from the Irish translation Fort (Dún) of Laoghaire as it was once the seat of King Laoghaire, the ancient High King of Ireland. The town is on the east coast of Ireland, about seven miles south of the capital Dublin and its focal point is the splendid harbour. Note - Dun Laoghaire is a tender port located an approximate 30 minute drive from Dublin.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council highlighted that the “significant income” generated from the cruise ships contributes to the restoration and repair of the 200-year-old harbour and to future plans which include a national Water Sports Campus”.

Norwegian Cruise Lines will top the schedule with 20 visits to Dún Laoghaire this year, followed by Viking Cruise Lines who will visit 17 times.

Central Statistics Office figures for this year show that the combined passenger and crew complement exceeds the population of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown by nearly 1,000 people.

CruiseMapper logo

Dun Laoghaire Harbor (Ireland) is set to experience a record-breaking cruise ship season, as 90+ vessels are expected to visit the area. This influx of vessels will bring a total of 164,000 passengers and 71,000 crew to Dun Laoghaire.

Princess tender to Dun Laoghaire for Dublin?

On our last UK cruise with Princess, we docked in Dublin. This time the ship will tender to Dun Laoghaire for Dublin. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced Dublin from this tender port. Did Princess offer a shuttle to Dublin? Or were there cabs readily available? I was making plans (tickets for Book of Kells, etc.) based on our previous experience and just realized this is a tender port now. I'm guessing I will need to add time to our day for transportation, but not sure what to expect.

Yes we tendered there last year.  The train into Dublin is maybe a block walk from the dock and it was about 8 miles to the Pearse Street station where we got off.  The train ticket was included when we bought a HOHO ticket at the dock (Do Dublin was the vendor - it was the green bus) but you can certainly buy train tickets on your own too.  Very easy to do and there were a lot of people from the ship taking the train into Dublin.  The train is called DART and I found this picture of the port area with X marking the DART station in my notes:

image.png.275908884fa4105e9b58203efc1e2b23.png

We also cook the tender and the train station as @azbirdmom azbirdmom stated was an easy walk. We also got off at the correct station to walk to see the Book of Kells.

karatemom2

When calculating your transit time also keep in mind that the tender ride at Dun Laoghaire is quite long compared to your average tender ride. It’s a good 25 to 30 minutes from ship

Our tender was cancelled due to windy weather on Cunard last June

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

princess cruise ship in dun laoghaire today

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.
