What fun to go shelling along the surf and beaches of Sanibel Island, unique in that it lies east and west, different than most islands which lie north and south, this direction allows Sanibel Island to catch abundant sea shells that the Gulf of Mexico brings to its shores. Sanibel Island is world renowned for its shells. People from all over the world come to collect and admire the colorful "Treasures From the Sea". People of all ages can be seen stooped over, shuffling along the beach with their buckets and nets in hand. We affectionately call this the "Sanibel Stoop!"

• Bring bucket, net bag and scoop, sun lotion and hat.
• Shell at low tide preferably and after a storm.
• It is illegal to take "live shells." Please return to water.

How to clean shells

Soak shells in a 50/50 solution of water and bleach, few hours or overnight. If any barnacles or other matter is left remove with a pick or toothbrush. To make shells shine wipe with mineral oil or baby oil.

Sand dollars

You may collect sand dollars but first check to make sure that the sand dollar is not alive - turn it over - there are little centipede feet up and down the backside - gently touch them with your finger to see if they move, if they do it's alive and you should gently place it back into the water. If they do not move, then you have just found one of Captivas' treasures! To bleach a sand dollar white it is important to soak in fresh water first. Water will be a brownish color, change water frequently until fairly clear or just continually flush with water until water stays fairly clear. Soak in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water for 5-10 minutes. Caution: Do not soak too long in bleach solution as sand dollar may crumble. Rinse throughly, let dry preferably in sun to bleach further. To harden sand dollar for crafts or display: Mix equal portions of white glue and water. With paint brush cover sand dollar with mixture. Let dry.

So that our beaches keep pristine we have a few rules:

• Pets must be leashed and owners must cleanup after their pets.
• Alcoholic beverages are prohibited November thru May.
• No open fire.
• No collecting of live shells. Return them to the water.
• Restrooms are located at all public beach accesses. All have handicap parking.
• A fee of $4 per hour for parking at both Sanibel Island and Captiva Island public beaches. Both cash and credit cards are accepted. Paid parking tickets are not interchangeable between Sanibel Island and Captiva Island.

Sanibel Island Shells Guide: Finding the Best Seashells

There are hundreds of beach spots in Florida, but the appeal of Sanibel Island is at the top 3 not only because of its pristine sand and water, but also for its renowned Sanibel Island shells. 

Known as the “Shelling Capital of the World,” the banana-shaped Sanibel island is unique to other islands because of its location and how the currents drive all kinds of seashells to the Sanibel sand.

Interestingly, this island runs perpendicular to the state of Florida, which causes the ocean currents to have the beaches primarily flushing water downward and bringing about 250 species of shells from the Caribbean all in one place.

So how do you reach Sanibel Island?

How to Get to Sanibel and Captiva Islands

Sanibel and Captiva are both reached by land.  These sister islands offer the same laid-back vibe with stunning beaches, and a good spot for shelling.

If you’re coming from overseas or another state, you could fly straight to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, which is just 20 miles away from Sanibel Island via Interstate 75.

You can also choose Orlando, Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports, but you’d have to head west on 1-75, while south on 1-75 if you’re coming from Tampa International Airport.

Regardless of your starting point, you will hop on Interstate 75, into Florida to get to Sanibel. From here:

• Take Exit 131 (Daniels Parkway) and head west. Turn right on Summerlin Road.
• Take a left on Summerlin Road.
• You’re on the right way if you’re seeing the Sanibel Island Causeway and Toll Plaza. (You’d have to pay a $6 fee to cross over to the island.

It would take about 20 minutes without traffic to pass through the entire length of Sanibel island to reach the small bridge (Blind Pass) going to Captiva. The good news is there’s no more fee to enter Captiva.

Best Shelling Beach on Sanibel Island

The entire Sanibel is public property and since you can walk all the way around the island, there’s no reason not to explore every inch of sand and see what kinds of seashells your feet could find. If you don’t have the luxury of time or if you’re shelling with a young kid, I suggest you pick one of the following beaches:

1. Bowman’s Beach

Located at the western end of Sanibel, Bowman’s Beach is one of the most popular shelling spots on the island since it’s near the main shopping district and yet still secluded enough for you to each your exploration.

• To reach Bowman’s Beach : Drive through the main shopping district, then turn right, and then left, driving six miles more until you reach the Bowman’s Beach sign.
• Heads up! There is a parking fee, but you won’t have trouble parking since there is ample space. You do have to prepare for the 5-minute hike across a bridge and over the dunes to reach the actual beach. If you’re going here with a ton of stuff, a beach cart may help.

Nearby, there are also two Causeway Islands’ park beaches called “A” and “B” based on how they appear from For Myers to Sanibel Island. They’re small but offer 10 acres of sandy beaches you can access from the road.

The water here is calm, so swimming and fishing are possible. You have amenities on Island B but none on Island A.

2. Blind Pass Beach

Located by the western end of Sanibel, Blind Pass Beach is named as such because it runs along the channel between Sanibel and Captiva Island.

• To reach Blind Pass Beach : It’s actually the most distinctive clue that you’re leaving Sanibel to Captiva Island. A 1926 hurricane separated these sister islands and created this new channel. You can reach Blind Pass Beach just past Bowman’s Beach. Parking is available on both sides of the bridge, but it is better to go shelling on the bridge’s Sanibel side.
• Heads up! The water here is not safe from swimming due to strong currents, but it is perfect for shelling. Plus, there are no amenities. You would have to walk a bit farther to Sanibel Captiva Road to reach small restaurants and a local fishing shop.

Turner Beach (located just across Blind Pass Beach) is also a good spot for shelling. Just like Blind Pass, Turner Beach receives strong currents and is not ideal for swimming.

3. Lighthouse Beach

The beach near Sanibel’s Lighthouse is at the eastern end of the island, extending around the island with views of the Gulf of Mexico, Ft. Myers Beach, and Naples beaches. As the closest to the mainland, Lighthouse beach can be pretty crowded. Good thing there are many places to explore here – there’s even a fishing pier north of the Lighthouse if you want to do something else after shelling.

• To reach Lighthouse Beach : This beach is the easiest to reach since it will welcome you to Sanibel right after you’ve crossed the causeway. You can park at the northern side (if you’re planning to go fishing by the pier first) or on the southern side (if your goal is to chill on the beach).
• Heads up! The location of this beach allows for many shells to wash up on the sand, but since it is a pretty popular beach, the shells are often picked up quickly. You can still find a lot of seashells here, but don’t get your hopes up finding rare varieties.

Kinds of Sanibel Island Shells

It is impossible to go home empty-handed if you’re coming for Sanibel Island shells.

Common shell varieties found in the area include alphabet cone, horn snail, scallops, lace murex, lightning whelk, tulip shells, lettered olive shells ( they’re olive-shaped ), cockle shells, top snail, risso, vitinella, periwinkle, limpet shells, Cerith shell, Transverse and Ponderous Ark.

You can see many types of conch shells on Sanibel, but the most common ones are Florida fighting conch shells, horse conch and kings’ crown conch.

My favorite is the coquina shell, which is similar in appearance to the scallop shells but with streaks of color that resemble wings.

What are the rarest Sanibel Island shells?

If you’re pro at shelling, you might know the following rare Sanibel Island shells:

• Lion’s Paw Scallop Shell – They’re the shape of ordinary scallop shells, but in dramatic reddish-orange color.
• Junonia Shell – This look like Olive shells, but but distinct brown dots all over.
• Staircase Shell – ALso known as ladder shells or Wentletraps Shells, this spiral staircase shell is a rare but top find (if you’re lucky).
• Cowrie shells – They’re oval-shaped shells with different designs and a shiny top layer. These are often used in jewelry, which is why you’d have a lot of competition hunting for these.

FAQs: Sanibel Island Shells

What is the best month for shelling on Sanibel Island?

If your goal is to go shelling on Sanibel Island, visit between December through April. It’s the coldest time in Florida, so don’t expect to swim around this time.

If you plan to dive or snorkel your way to find Sanibel Island shells, check weather conditions and make sure it isn’t low tide when you go.

Can you take shells from Sanibel Island home?

Generally speaking, live shells are not allowed to be taken home. If the shell you find has a hardcover over the opening, the shell still has its owner-occupant there. Don’t force-evict them. Instead, bring the shell back to the ocean.

Starfish and sanddollars are also considered live shells or live animals. Florida doesn’t allow them to get taken to its natural ecosystem (and there’s a huge fine) if you’re caught taking them from Sanibel Islands.

Captiva and Sanibel Island Shelling Tips

The beaches of Sanibel and Captiva are known for shelling, consistently ranking at the top of the best shelling beaches in the United States. Finding seashells on either island is as easy as walking onto the beach. Here are some helpful tips to get the most out of your Captiva or Sanibel Island shelling experience. 

Remember, live shelling is illegal. If you see a small creature inside the shell, it’s considered to be alive. If the shell you find is alive, gently place it back where you found it. If you aren’t sure, leave it be.

Like most things in life, searching for the best seashells on Sanibel and Captiva is all about being in the right place at the right time.

Timing Is Everything

Knowing when to look for seashells is extremely important. Yes, you can easily find shells on both islands any time of day, but shelling at the right time is likely to yield the best shells.

Low Tide: Each high tide brings in a new batch of shells, which stay on or near shore when the tide recedes. Looking at low tide will provide you with the best chance of finding a high number of perfect shells. There are two low tides a day, morning and evening. The latter is considered optimal shelling. Consult the tide schedule <link> each day for the optimum shelling time. Some vacation rentals and resorts even provide a tide chart at check-in. 

Early Morning: As noted, the morning low tide is the best for shelling. If you’ve ever been on the Sanibel or Captiva beach in the morning, you’ve likely seen the shell enthusiasts walking the beach each morning doing the “Sanibel Stoop” (hunched over, walking along the beach looking for shells). 

Moon Phases: If your trip overlaps a full moon or new moon, you’re in luck. The gravitational pull of the moon is at its peak during a full moon and new moon, meaning large tidal ranges. 

Weather Events: Massive storms or strong waves caused by high winds will push even more shells onto the shore. We saw this first-hand in 2020; the day after heavy winds and incredible waves, piles of shells stretched almost to the dunes. 

Location, Location, Location

As barrier islands, Sanibel and Captiva are well-positioned as seashell depositories. The ocean current carries the shells to the San-Cap area where they await your discovery.

Search near the waterline and find the shells before they come to shore.

Watch for small sandbars that form at low tide just offshore, then search the tidal pool that forms between the sandbar and the shore. There are several sandbars on Captiva between South Seas Island Resort’s south border and Wightman Lane that seem to pop up every time we’re there. 

Every so often on both islands, you’ll come across a massive section of shells. If it’s low tide, you can search these piles for the best of the best shells.

Try not to look where others are searching. If someone else is already searching in an area, chances are they’ve already found the best shells. There will be plenty of other open spots to search for your own seashell treasure. 

Other Shelling Tips 

The when and where are extremely important, but other factors come into play, depending on what type of shells you’re looking for and how many shells you want to take home.

Searching for Sand Dollars

Finding a whole sand dollar is the Captiva and Sanibel Island shelling equivalent of winning with a scratch-off lottery ticket. 

The best place to look for sand dollars is in the water, a few feet from shore. Dig your feet into the sand and slowly shuffle your feet along the sea bottom. You may be lucky enough to kick up a sand dollar. 

You can also look for circular impressions in the sand, just below the waterline. If you see a circular outline in the sand, gently scoop up the sand surrounding the circle. Chances are, you’ll pull up a sand dollar.

If you’re looking for a lot of sand dollars, and I mean A LOT, you’ll want to take the cruise to Cayo Costa Island. We found dozens upon dozens of sand dollars during our half-day cruise in 2020.

Shelling Gear

The bare minimum you need for shelling is your hands and pockets in which to place the shells. If you’re going to be out shelling for a while, you’ll likely want a shell scoop and either a bucket or a mesh shelling bag to carry all your shells. Thankfully, these are easy to come by on Sanibel and Captiva. Several stores across both islands sell these and other beach-related items. 

Beach Stuff, located on Captiva Drive between Wightman and Lakia Lanes, has plenty of gear for you. 

Displaying Your Shells

Many beach-side resorts offer shell washing stations and places to take photos of all your shells. For many, that’s the end of their shelling experience and their hauls are discarded before the flight home. 

We like to bring ours home; we can’t think of a more special souvenir. Several rooms in our home have seashell jars. These are easy to make. We fill clear glass jars with a variety of shells, seal the jar and place it on a shelf. 

Beach Stuff on Captiva Island has smaller jars for shells available for purchase. 

As for sand dollars, we made our own sand dollar souvenir for less than $25.

Enjoy a thrill of a boat ride around Sanibel and Captiva Islands

The Sanibel Thriller will take you around both Sanibel and Captiva in a high-speed boat. Dolphin love the Thriller and will often play and jump in it’s wake. It leaves from the Sanibel Marina on the east end of Sanibel.
