What do our customers say?

The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

Super organised

Everything was super organised and detailed, there is nothing to complain well done Nordic Visitor. We enjoyed all tours that were organised for us.

Amazing experience

Having not done a tour like this before, it was comforting to know that someone else had taken the reins and everything was double-checked. Liza was helpful with all my booking questions and all the team members we met on our trip were friendly and knowledgeable. We learnt so much about Swedish life and traditions on our stay, in addition to some amazing experiences.

Trip of a lifetime!

This was a trip of a lifetime and I would do the exact same trip over again! We had a blast and cannot wait to get back to Sweden.

Thanks Nordic Visitor!

Nordic Visitor made booking what could be a potentially complex trip (finding the right accommodation and day trips, etc.) really easy. We booked very last-minute and our consultant Ruzena could not have been more helpful - booking and arranging the package we wanted for the exact dates we requested at short-notice. Thanks!

Unforgettable experience

It was the best decision to book with Nordic Visitor. Juliana, our travel agent, responded quickly and gave us great tips and service when we needed it. The excursion we took, snowmobiling and chasing the northern lights, was unforgettable, and the dog sledding was a wonderful experience. The stay at the seasonal ICEHOTEL - wow! Every detail was well planned and scheduled by Nordic Visitor. We are extremely grateful and it exceeded our expectations.

Exactly what we're looking for

This was my second tour with Nordic Visitor, and I will continue to use them as a first choice option when exploring trips in the Europe area. They offered exactly what my wife and I are looking for in planning guided and semi-guided experiences.

We were well looked after

We had a fantastic time. We were well looked after. Our activities were well laid out. Liza our Nordic Visitor agent was really good keeping us informed as well.

We absolutely loved our experience with Nordic Visitor! From our first inquiry to our last goodbye, we had exceptional service and attention. It quite literally was everything we asked for and more! Our travel consultant worked diligently to accommodate our every wish, was always in communication with us, and was simply amazing! This was a trip of a lifetime!

Outstanding experience!

The entire experience was perfection! The dog sledding was outstanding. There are no words to adequately describe how beautiful and peaceful it is out there with the dogs. The reindeer farm was so fun! Everything and everyone was truly outstanding! All of the drivers were prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Starting every day with such a beautiful and thoughtfully prepared breakfast spread was above and beyond. Every excursion/tour was amazing, from the guides to the food to the excursions themselves. We loved everything.

Nordic Visitor thought of everything

I can't say enough about Nordic Visitor. They really thought of everything and handled even real time unexpected issues promptly. We would have definitely not had such a good experience had I tried to plan this all on our own!

Thrilling trip!

We were very pleased with our trip to Lapland, Finland. Quite honestly, we didn't know what to expect, because we had never been there before. The activities we experienced (snowmobiling, dog sledding, reindeer sledding) meant we were thrilled with our trip. Nordic Visitor made the travel very smooth and enjoyable.

Excellent experience!

Cannot fault our experience. Everything was made very easy from start to finish. Thank you so much. Loads included but still had enough time to do other things and explore on our own. Excellent experience. No glitches so no negative memories of the experience. Loved equally by child and adults!

Getting to Lapland

Nordic Visitor tours of Lapland begin in either Kiruna, for Sweden itineraries, or Kemi or Rovaniemi for Finland trips. You can find some direct flights from airports across Europe.

Otherwise, you can reach Lapland with connecting flights from Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, or Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Another option is to fly to Copenhagen in Denmark and travel to Lapland from there.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main gateway for international air travel in Sweden. From Stockholm, you can fly to Kiruna with SAS or Norwegian. The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is Finland’s main air travel hub. From here, you’ll be able to take a direct flight to either Kemi or Rovaniemi with Finnair or Norwegian. Both journeys take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

We recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. You can also use an airfare search engine, such as Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages. However, all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in your arrival city if you’d like to rest up after your flight.

Different ways you can experience Lapland

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Lapland below.

ICE & SNOW HOTELS

Santa claus, snowmobile adventures, culture & history, reindeer & sami culture, winter tours, frequently asked questions about lapland santa holidays.

Live out your childhood dream by visiting Santa in Lapland, his North Pole residence. Not only will you meet the “man in red” and his cheerful elves, but you’ll also soak up Lapland’s beautiful, snow-blanketed scenery.

Whether you’re coming with the family, your other half, or friends, Father Christmas won’t be the only highlight of your trip. Spend your Lapland holiday enjoying activities in the snow, learning about the native Sámi culture, and cosying up by the fireplace.

Read on to find the answers to frequently asked questions about Lapland Santa breaks and start planning your trip.

WHERE IS SANTA’S LAPLAND?

Lapland is situated in the far north of Sweden and Finland, within the Arctic Circle. It is a region characterised by beautiful forests, lakes and rivers. Here the dark night skies of winter light up with the shimmering colours of the aurora borealis.

If you’re looking for Santa’s hometown, you’ll find it in Rovaniemi, Finland. Head to Santa Claus Village, just outside town, to meet Father Christmas, send a postcard from the Santa Claus Post Office, and learn about Finnish Christmas traditions.

  • Visit Santa Claus Village in Finland to meet Father Christmas in his hometown
  • Discover fun activities and things to do at Santa Claus Village

ARE THERE ANY SWEDISH LAPLAND SANTA HOLIDAYS?

Yes, you can see Father Christmas in Swedish Lapland. Although Santa Claus Village is located in Finland, that doesn’t mean that the “man in red” never visits Sweden!

On a winter break to Kiruna, you could have a Christmas-themed day to experience local festive customs. Bake delicious cookies, decorate the tree, and savour a traditional “Julbord” – a special Christmas buffet. The highlight, of course, will be visiting Santa Claus at his secret cabin in the forest.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO VISIT SANTA IN LAPLAND?

Take your pick from visiting Swedish or Finnish Lapland for your Santa short break. If you want to explore his official hometown, head to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland.

Santa Claus Village is a Christmas-themed hub with plenty of fun activities to try, hearty festive food to tuck into, and elves to hang out with. Of course, it’s also where you’ll find Santa’s workshop. This is a great place to visit with kids, as you can all enjoy a private family meeting with Father Christmas.

Alternatively, travel to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland if you’d like to meet him in a peaceful setting. As part of a Christmas-themed experience, you’d be whisked off to a secret cabin in the woods. Here you’d get to chat with Santa Claus and spend the day enjoying Swedish Christmas traditions.

IS SANTA IN LAPLAND ALL YEAR ROUND?

You can meet Father Christmas at any time of year in Lapland! But if you come between December and March, you’ll get to soak up the enchanting festive atmosphere.

During this period the whole region is covered in glistening snow, so you can enjoy exciting outdoor activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling. Winter is also the best time to hunt for the northern lights in Lapland .

  • Learn more about visiting Lapland in December or January
  • Check out Lapland tours in February or March

CAN I CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS OR NEW YEAR IN LAPLAND?

Absolutely! Spend Christmas in Lapland and you could attend a festive gala dinner on Christmas Eve, accompanied by Santa’s elves. Join in the fun and help to decorate the Christmas tree before you tuck into the big feast.

You could then have the ultimate Christmas Day in Santa’s homeland. Whizz through the snow in a reindeer sleigh, meet Santa in his workshop, and taste delicious Christmas food. Think freshly baked gingerbread biscuits and a warm glass of glögg (mulled wine).

Or visit Lapland at New Year for a celebration to remember. You could attend a New Year’s Eve party in a wooden hut in the middle of a Finnish forest, experiencing local customs and cuisine. And, of course, you’d get to watch a spectacular fireworks display at the stroke of midnight.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST FOR A FINNISH LAPLAND SANTA ITINERARY?

Day 1 - Arrival in Rovaniemi & snowmobile safari Upon arrival, a driver will meet you at Rovaniemi Airport for your transfer to your accommodation. You could rest after your journey or head into town to explore a little before your first Lapland adventure.

Come evening, it’s time to embark on a snowmobile safari and hunt for the northern lights. Enjoy an exhilarating ride through the snow, looking for the aurora borealis, as an expert guide leads you along the trails.

Round off your excursion with a hot drink and snack beside the campfire, then return to your hotel for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

Day 2 - Dog sledding and Finnish sauna Head into the snow-draped scenery outside Rovaniemi today with a guided dog sled excursion. Learn about this traditional mode of transport in Lapland, starting with a brief lesson at the kennel. Then mush through the woods with your own sled.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in Rovaniemi. You could indulge in a sauna session, the typical way to relax and unwind here in Finland.

Day 3 - Reindeer farm and Santa Claus Village This morning, hop on a snowmobile and make your way to a traditional reindeer farm. Here you can learn about the culture of Lapland’s native people, the Sami, and go on a sleigh ride.

Next, prepare to meet the “man in red” with a visit to Santa Claus Village, just outside Rovaniemi.

Revel in the festive atmosphere of this Christmassy haven, which is open year-round. Enjoy a private meeting with Santa with the elves on hand, and send a postcard from the Santa Claus Post Office. Then why not browse for souvenirs at the craft shops?

Day 4 - Day at leisure and visit to the Arctic SnowHotel Learn more about the local history, nature and culture in Rovaniemi this morning by paying a visit to the Arktikum Museum. Here you can explore the intriguing exhibits about Finnish Lapland and the Arctic region.

Come evening, head to the Arctic SnowHotel in Lehtojärvi, just outside Rovaniemi. Take a guided tour of this fascinating frozen hotel, which is created anew each year. Check out the rooms, restaurant and bar, all sculpted from ice and snow.

After your tour sit down for a delicious 3-course meal at Restaurant Kota, inspired by traditional Sami architecture. Then, you’ll either return to your accommodation in Rovaniemi, or overnight in the Arctic SnowHotel for an unforgettable stay. Choose from sleeping in an ice room or a glass igloo.

Spend the night in Rovaniemi or the Arctic SnowHotel.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST FOR A SWEDISH LAPLAND SANTA ITINERARY?

Day 1 - Arrival in Kiruna and dog sledding After touching down at Kiruna Airport, a driver will meet you and take you to your hotel. Enjoy some free time to yourself, perhaps getting to know the town or simply relaxing before you head out later.

At dusk you’ll get to enjoy one of the most special activities and traditions in Lapland: husky sledding.

Head out onto the trails on a dog sled driven by an expert guide. Glide through the woods and across snowy plains, looking for the northern lights as you go. Afterwards, fuel up with a hot drink and a snack by the campfire.

Spend the night in Kiruna.

Day 2 - Experience a traditional Swedish Christmas Today is the day to enjoy some Santa magic, with a Christmas-themed experience to get you in the festive mood.

You’ll be whisked off to a secret cabin in the woods, where you’ll meet Santa. Here, children will receive little gifts from the “man in red” – if they’ve been good!.

Enjoy Swedish customs in this enchanting setting. Bake gingerbread biscuits, decorate the Christmas tree, and sample delicious Swedish specialities during a traditional Christmas lunch (“Julbord”).

The rest of your afternoon and evening can be spent at leisure.

Day 3 - Visit the ICEHOTEL This morning, discover the famous ICEHOTEL, situated in the village of Jukkasjärvi just outside Kiruna. This was the original ice hotel that set a trend for the many others that now exist around the world.

Begin with a guided tour of this extraordinary hotel, learning how artists build it using ice from the Torne River nearby. You’ll also get to explore the ICEHOTEL 365, a year-round structure that stays cold in the summer thanks to solar energy.

Spend the rest of the day at leisure. You could opt to enjoy more activities, including snowmobile safaris and visits to a Sámi reindeer farm.

Join us for the most exciting and fun-filled day ever. Fly to the still, white wilderness of Lapland where, as every child knows, a Very Special Person lives among snowy forests, husky dogs and reindeer. With all activities included, it's an exclusive festive day trip that your family will remember forever.

children 2-15 Deposit £150 per person.

Your Itinerary

Fly direct to Pajala on a specially chartered flight to Swedish Lapland. This will be the only 'Santa' flight to Pajala on this day and numbers are strictly limited, which means you'll have plenty of time to enjoy all the activities on offer throughout the magical day.

Your Lapp hosts will meet you, dressed in traditional Sami costume, before you take a short, warm and comfortable coach journey to Santa's Home.

After a quick change into the cosy, thermal garments provided, you'll head out into the snow. Enjoy a magical ride in a traditional reindeer-drawn sleigh, a trip through the countryside on a dog-sled pulled by real huskies and a thrilling ride on a snowmobile. Between the organised activities, you'll have time to enjoy the snow, with toboggan rides, snowman building and snowball fights!

Once you've worked up an appetite, head into the welcoming warmth of the main building, and tuck in to a delicious two-course lunch. Warming hot berry juice and biscuits will also be available throughout the day.

But the highlight of the day will surely come as you set foot on the 'secret path' through the forest, and follow the twinkling lanterns to Santa's log cabin home. Father Christmas will be waiting there to greet you personally; the perfect end to a perfect, magical day.

Holders of full driving licences can take the controls. For children under 15, there will be the chance to be pulled along in a sleigh.

Temperatures rarely rises above freezing, and can get as low as -35C. Thermal wear for all sizes is provided at Santa's Village, but we recommend that you bring a suitable hat, gloves and outerwear (preferably layers) for travel between the aircraft and the village. Footwear is also available if you do not have your own boots.

Hot meals will be served on both outbound and inbound flights. Lunch at the village will consist of soup followed by traditional Swedish meatballs or a vegetarian option. Hot berry juice will be available throughout the day. Due to the remoteness of the location we are unable to fulfil any special dietary requirements. We'd, therefore, ask that any customers who suffer from allergies provide their own food for the day. You may also like to bring treats for your children to snack on during the day. Due to airport security, liquids must be purchased after you have passed through Passport Control.

There are no cash machines in Lapland, but British pounds may be used to purchase drinks, snacks and souvenirs. Valid credit/debit cards will be accepted.

Round off the day with time at leisure; tobogganing, having a sauna or just relaxing in the hotel’s comfortable lounge. Another night keeping a look out for the northern lights.

After breakfast transfer to Luleå Airport for your flight back to UK.

(Note: not suitable for children under 3 due to weather conditions.)

Christmas in Lapland: the best Santa experiences and holiday companies

Your guide to planning an unforgettable trip to a winter wonderland.

santa day trips to lapland 2022

W hether you’re a Santa believer or bah-humbug, you’re eternally five years old and fizzing with excitement on a trip to see St Nick in Lapland . When the Arctic gets its seasonal dump of snow in December, the region pulls out all the festive stops, with its Christmas card scene of snow-daubed fells and forests, flurry of winter activities (reindeer! huskies!) and northern lights shows.

Father Christmas and his tribe of twinkly elves draw thousands of wide-eyed, sugar-tanked kids and their parents to this real-life winter wonderland every year. Coming in December naturally cranks up the festive magic tenfold. Read on for more about what the Santa experience involves and why it is only the icing on Lapland’s Christmas cake.

Santa Claus (Santa Claus Holiday Village)

Which is the best Santa experience in Lapland?

Rovaniemi in Finland is Santa central, with a proper hit of festive sparkle at the Santa Claus Village , where you can meet Santa in his grotto, learn every elf trick in the book and dash across the Arctic Circle in a reindeer-driven sleigh. Kids also love the more Disneyfied Santa Park , with glitzy Christmas rides, elves baking gingerbread, ice sculptures and another Santa (spoiler: there’s more than one). Yes, it’s touristy, but within minutes you can give the crowds the slip and be out in the snowy wilderness, driving a husky sleigh or snowmobiling as the northern lights flash overhead. And Rovaniemi has the easy-to-reach edge, with airlines like easyJet* , Ryanair and Tui * running frequent direct flights from the UK (four and half hours). It’s a good pick if travelling with tots — get out and you’re there.

Authentic Scandinavia’s Rovaniemi Santa Claus Adventure is a cracker, with three nights at the Santa Claus Holiday Village.

If you need a bit more breathing space, Apukka Resort * , a 15-minute drive out of town, has a pretty location astride a frozen lake. Discover the World offers a three-night Santa Break which includes a private family visit to see Santa in his secret cabin, activities from reindeer rides to mini snowmobiling, all meals and warm-weather gear.

Making snow angels (Discover the World’s three-night Santa Adventure in Lapland)

Is Santa’s Lapland worth the money?

Lapland is high and comes with a price tag to match. But, let’s face it, you’ll probably only go once, so it’s worth it to see the look on kids’ faces when they meet Santa and are dropped into an Arctic scene straight out of Frozen. For the magic to work its charm, take them at an age when they still believe. You want them to be able to remember the experience, so four or five is the golden age, though older kids get more out of the Lapland activities, some of which are off limits to younger kids (snowmobiling, for instance).

Unless you plan to just hang out in Rovaniemi, a Lapland holiday is best organised as a package, both logistically and because it is cheaper. Do it independently and accommodation, meal and activity costs quickly snowball.

If you’re booking your own flights, you can reckon on around £300 per person or £550 at Christmas. The earlier you book, the better.

Elves in the snow (Christmas at Luosto package from Canterbury Travel)

How many days do you need in Lapland?

You’re going all the way to the Arctic, so why rush? Some companies offer day trips to Lapland, but they aren’t great for the environment and they are pretty tiring for kids. A three to four-night stay is the minimum if you want the trip to be reasonably relaxed, with time to do the whole Santa thing, throw in some snow fun and see the northern lights come out to play. Most Christmas packages include some festive activities, too, from reindeer rides to elf schools.

If you want to venture deeper into Lapland to a quieter resort or village, you’ll need longer: five days is great, a week is even better. Seeing Santa as the hook for a longer, more varied trip to the Arctic keeps both kids and parents happy.

Where is the best place for Christmas in Lapland?

Beyond Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland has some snug, low-key resorts up its sleeve, such as Suomu, Levi* , Inari and Pyha-Luosto, where you can ski, hole up in a log cabin, aurora gaze and dive wholeheartedly into the Narnia–like surrounds of frozen forests, fells and deep downy snow. Santa pops up at all of them during the Christmas season, with packages to match.

Not only Finland is in on the act. Arctic Sweden is an enticing alternative, with plenty of Santa action and similar heart-stealing landscapes.

Tobogganing (Discover the World’s three-night Santa Adventure in Lapland)

How much does it cost to visit Santa in Lapland?

For a three-night stay including flights, transfers, activities, accommodation, some meals and cold-weather gear, you’re looking at roughly £1,500 per person, while a week will set you back around £2,500. Kids are only a fraction cheaper (bums on seats and all that), with a 10 to 20 per cent discount on adult prices.

Cool deals that deliver the perfect parcel of Santa and Arctic wilderness include the all-inclusive Muotka 7-Night Adventure with Inghams, staying at a rustic lodge on the edge of the Urho-Kekkonen National Park (nice and dark for the northern lights), far north of the Arctic Circle. During Christmas week, they ramp up the festive fun with gingerbread baking, tree decorating and a Santa visit on Christmas Eve.

Canterbury Travel drops you straight into a snow globe with its four-night Christmas at Luosto package, basing you on the felly fringes of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, with log cabin accommodation, meals, loads of activities, elf parties and a search for Santa on Christmas day.

Responsible Travel ups the sustainable game with its off-the-beaten-track, seven–night Northern Lights Family Christmas in Lapland trip, which whisks you to the silent white wilderness of Menesjarvi, right up near Lake Inari. This one is culturally immersive, with activities from wilderness skills workshops to an insight into a reindeer herder’s day at a Sami farm and an aurora dinner in a traditional kota hut. And yes, you’ll also see Santa.

Should Sweden appeal, try Discover the World’s three-night Santa Adventure in Lapland , staying at the Grand Arctic Hotel in Overkalix, or the Baltic Travel Company’s four-night Christmas in Swedish Lapland , based in Kiruna, with a torchlit procession to mass and a Christmas smorgasbord.

Husky sledding (Discover the World’s three-night Santa Adventure in Lapland)

What else is there to do in Lapland at Christmas?

Plenty. Pretty much every Lapland break covers some activities, from reindeer sleigh rides to dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, tobogganing and northern lights safaris. Bear in mind that some activities might be unsuitable for kids under eight (check with your operator). If you’re going it alone, expect to pay between £50 and £120 per activity.

Some companies let you upgrade to a glass igloo for maximum aurora-spotting potential for a surcharge and it’s worth it — seeing the northern lights dance overhead while snuggled up in bed really is special. Most companies also provide cold-weather gear and you’ll need it, with temperatures dipping as low as -25C.

In terms of the lights, there are no guarantees, but the remoter you go and the longer you stay, the better the chances.

A reindeer safari (Discover the World’s three-night Santa Break at Apukka Resort)

When should I book?

Right now. The best Lapland holidays fill up in the blink of Santa’s eye. Many winter trips are already sold out by summer, but the good news is you can jump to the front of the queue by booking now for next year.

11 of the best things to do in Lapland

T he modern-day home of Santa Claus, a popular skiing destination and one of the best places to see the Northern Lights , Lapland is at the top of plenty of travellers’ wishlists for a reason.

Many who visit will stop by in the Finnish Lapland capital, Rovaniemi, take to the pistes in Levi or Yllas and save some time for classic activities like husky sledding or snowmobiling.

But this region, which extends through parts of Finland , Norway and Sweden , has a host of other wonders to explore, from vast hiking trails to cultural centres and unique accommodation options.

And although the winter wonders are well-documented here, the sometimes overlooked summer months provide amazing opportunities to see incredible scenery and enjoy outdoor activities, all while basking in the never-ending light of the midnight sun.

Whether you visit for Christmas or in the middle of summer, Lapland will provide an excellent variety of things to do. Below, we’ve collated a list of some of the best.

See the Northern Lights

This area of the Artic Circle is the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights , with towns and cities in all three countries providing a great chance of seeing the aurora if you stay for long enough.

In Norway, the city of Tromso and the more remote Lofoten Islands are the best place to go, while in Finland Saariselka is perhaps the most popular light-spotting destination (though they can be seen throughout, including in Levi, Inari and Rovaniemi).

The top bucket-list destination for seeing the Northern Lights would probably be Abisko, a small village in the north of Sweden. It is home to the Aurora Sky Station, sat at an impressive 900m above sea level, which is self-styled as the ‘best place in the world to see the Northern Lights ’ due to low precipitation rates and its location within the so-called ‘aurora oval’.

This area, surrounded by snow-capped hills and placid lakes, sees the aurora so often that the tourist board website confidently states that anyone staying for four or more nights between September and April is “almost certain” to see the Lights.

Visit Santa Claus

Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland – a city of around 60,000 people that is worth visiting for the excellent Arktikum Museum, which explores Lapland’s culture and history, and the plethora of classic Lapland-related activities such as Northern Lights excursions. One particular draw of Rovaniemi is the Santa Claus Village, the official home of the man himself.

If you’ve brought the kids along (and even if you haven’t), you’ll enjoy the magical setting of wooden, Alpine-style buildings adorned with twinkling lights and surrounded by deep snow. Kids can meet Santa Claus, visit his work stations and meet a range of Lappish wildlife, including reindeer and alpacas.

Unsurprisingly for a territory covered in snow, Lapland is home to a handful of popular ski resorts . The main ones are found in Finland , and include Yllas, Levi and Saariselka (most of which are offered as destinations by UK-based ski tour operators such as Crystal Ski and Inghams).

Skiing here is on fells rather than mountains, and overall is more low-key – and far more quiet – than the rest of Europe, with fewer pistes and parties than the Alps or the Dolomites. However, the near-guarantee of a blanket of deep snow, the incredible scenery and a range of activities away from the slopes make Lapland a popular skiing destination. It caters to different abilities too, being a great place for learners, while the presence of floodlit slopes and World Cup runs means more advanced skiers should still be happy enough.

Discover Sami culture in Inari

Inari is a large, remote region that lies around 40 miles from Saariselka, in the north of Finland. While renowned for its magnificent natural beauty, the beautiful Lake inari and a high likelihood of witnessing the Northern Lights (the town lies further north than aforementioned Abisko), it is mainly known as the capital of the indigenous culture of the Sami people.

In the village, Sajos is the people’s cultural and administrative centre, housing the Sami Parliament and promoting and preserving Sami culture, history and tradition. Though primarily for use by Sami people, visitors can attend guided tours that give a respectful introduction to Sami culture.

Husky or reindeer sledding

Husky sledding, reindeer sledding and visits to reindeer farms are all activities that can be done in the majority of Lappish destinations, and are often included in holiday packages if visiting at the right time (usually between November and March).

For reindeer visits and sledding, the obvious destination is Rovaniemi, home to plenty of Santa’s favourite animals and providing the perfect flat, snow-covered plains for an extended, fast-paced journey through the Lappish wilderness. For dog lovers, the town of Kiruna, around one hour south of Abisko, is the centre of husky sledding, where a vast frozen tundra and sections of pine forest provide the ideal terrain for a multi-day trip or a couple-of-hours excursion.

Stay in the Icehotel

Igloos, as well as other unique accommodation such as glass-ceilinged pods, are prevalent throughout Lapland, offering chances to see the Northern Lights and experience a once-in-a-lifetime overnight stay. But the most remarkable Lapland accommodation is Sweden’s Icehotel, located in Jukkasjarvi (around 20 minutes from husky sledding capital Kiruna).

Operating for just over three decades, this unique hotel is built anew every winter with ice blocks from the nearby Torne River, with each part providing captivating, fleeting beauty before melting in spring. The rooms, all individual and elaborately designed and carved by ice artists, provide a truly memorable stay in the Arctic wilderness.

Snowshoeing or snowmobiling

Snowshoeing and snowmobiling are another set of activities that are common in most popular Lappish destinations. Many places offer trips combined with Northern Lights tours for the ultimate evening snowmobile or snowshoe experience, but there are plenty of other ways to try out two of Lapland’s most sought-after activities.

Snowshoeing, essentially hiking using special boots to make walking in the snow easier, is popular around the fells and canyons of areas such as Inari and Kainuu, and in national parks like Urho Kekkonen and Salla. The same is true for snowmobiling – as any area of open plains, and many forest areas, are suitable, these excursions are popular from Rovaniemi and Inari to Pyha and Luosto.

Visit Norwegian Lapland

The Norwegian part of Lapland may be less thought of than its Finnish and Swedish counterparts, but this part of the country offers some of the most striking landscapes in all of Norway.

Tromso is the main city in the region, itself a popular Northern Lights spotting destination and a thriving destination that showcases Norwegian culture, history and tradition alongside dramatic fjord scenery and snow-capped mountains. The Lofoten Islands are the other oft-visited location, providing some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe, with their rugged mountains, steep cliffs and serpentine fjords, as well as opportunities to see the aurora and the midnight sun while visiting the many charming fishing villages throughout the archipelago.

Explore a national park

There are a host of national parks in Lapland, but a few stand out for their raw natural beauty, extensive wilderness areas and opportunities for much-loved activities like hiking, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Some 95 per cent of Sweden’s national park area is found in Swedish Lapland. The Abisko park is most renowned due to its Northern Lights activity, though Unesco-listed Laponia boasts high mountains, primeval forests, vast marshes, beautiful lakes and well-preserved river systems that showcase ongoing geological processes and the ancestral Sami way of life.

Lapland’s most-visited national parks are concentrated in Finland. Urho Kekkonen, Pyha-Luosto and Pallas-Yllastunturi are three of the most popular, replete with snowy hiking trails, dense areas of forest, towering fells and a palpable sense of remoteness.

Discover the region in summer

While the default choice for many coming to Lapland would be to visit for the snowy conditions, the warmer months hold many highlights that are hidden in the winter weather. The midnight sun is perhaps the most striking phenomenon during the summer, with parts of Lapland seeing 24 hours of sunlight from May to August.

Archipelagos like Lulea and Lofoten offer vast spaces for kayaking alongside otters and even whales, while beaches like that at Lake Livojarvi become the epicentre of Lappish leisure in summer.

There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails to explore too, with one of the most famed being the 270-mile Kungsleden trail that runs through the highlights of the Swedish wilderness, taking walkers across rivers, valleys, lakes and the highest peak in the country. In Finland, the Karhunkierros is a legendary 50-mile route through the Oulanka national park, while there are dozens of shorter hikes too, such as the popular five mile route up and down Saana fell.

Drive Sweden’s Wilderness Road

Known in Swedish as the Vildmarksvagen, the 230-mile Wilderness Road is one of Lapland’s longest and loneliest stretches. It runs between the towns of Stromsund and Vilhelmina, and is best driven between June and October, before the snow begins to cover the majority (and leave you even more at the mercy of the elements).

This route contains some of the most striking scenery in Lapland, from the peaks of the Marsfjallen mountains and waterfalls like Hallingsafallet, to sections of undisturbed birch forest and even Sweden’s longest canyon. The area is sparsely populated and home to few accommodation options or petrol stations, so be sure to plan ahead. And look out for Sweden’s largest bear population, who call this region their home.
