shania twain hollywood bowl concert review

“It’s been about 25 years since I stood on this stage,” since Shania Twain , not long after the kickoff to her set Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl . She had that figured about right — the calendar shows she last played America’s most favored amphitheater on May 6, 1999. That was a few weeks shy of the moment that her signature song among all signature songs, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” peaked on the charts.

Popular on Variety

Or a wig, not multiple ones, actually. The expectation coming into a diva-type show is that there will be multiple costume changes, but that proved not to be the case. When her two male backup singer-dancers broke were left alone early in the set to do a mimed joint tap-dance, it seemed like the occasion for Twain’s first refreshed outfit of the night, but it was really just a time-out to roll that faux chopper out on stage. Until the encore segment, in fact, Twain surprised probably everybody by wearing the same costume throughout — but when you’ve got a costume like Twain’s on Saturday, it might seem criminal to switch it out. She had faith, well-placed, that for the better part of two hours no one would stop staring at the high-level-lingerie look underneath her overcoat. It looked about 10 times as revealing as it probably was, which is probably why Twain was able to withstand the unseasonably cold temperatures in Hollywood (that, and being Canadian). It’s fair to say that the frizzy blonde wig she wore throughout the night was somewhat polarizing, but there was not much controversy about the effectiveness of the sheer look that is now burned into 17,500 fans’ brains forever. Long blue sashes attached to each wrist and boots to match added strong splashes of color to break up the monochrome sex appeal. (Her command of those epic sashes, and keeping them out of her way — not even getting them entangled up when she’d periodically sit down on a stool to play acoustic guitar — should get props alongside any of the more obvious choreography of the night.)

That look got jettisoned only for the two-song encore segment, for which Twain reemerged in a floor-length black coat and top hat, stripped off for the finale to reveal that the star was wearing the same bustier that she did in the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” music video of ’97 — pulled out of a museum, she said, for this purpose. (Whatever museum that was has been bereft of it for a few years now, since she also slipped into it for a video and a TikTok a few years ago.) The outfit is iconic enough now that it’s hard to remember that, at the time, it seemed like a feminist appropriation of the mannequin-wear from Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love,” now adapted to make a statement that a look that leggy could also be appropriate for women for whom the lights were on and somebody was home. She’s the woman who shows up at the class reunion in her late 50s still able to fit into her prom dress, with the crucial difference that nobody seems to hate her for it.

Twain would be the last artist to ever open a vein on stage, and not even the half-dozen new songs from “Queen of Me” provide occasion for “let’s catch up” conversation. (This album feels a little more deliberately confectionary than the more personal one that preceded it, “Now”… more aimed at reclaiming commercial heights, whether that was possible now or not.) But you do always get what feels like a real glimpse into her personality, when she has a built-in fan interaction moment. On Sunday, just as she was reading off a card the names of the fans she’d be sharing time with, she was alerted that it’s “against the law” to bring anyone from the audience up to the stage — so she spontaneously found a way to walk down into the middle of the pit to hear the designated devotees sing her songs a cappella (they had won a contest on a cruise ship doing Shania karaoke). For someone who could easily keep up an aura of untouchability, it’s revealing, in a nice way, that Twain is kind of literally willing to get down in the trenches.

She also is surprisingly unbashful — even though it shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point — about singing live, which maybe is where the vulnerability really comes in for a pop diva of this era and stature. The ratios are about the same as they have been for Twain residencies and tours going back decades: A few songs sound to involve mostly or entirely pre-recorded vocals — like the opening number, which she performs while traversing the middle aisle of the Bowl, or a particular highlight ballad — but that leaves the vast majority of the show in which she’s singing demonstrably live. There’s little doubt that her singers and players — including an enjoyably thrashy female drummer — are doing most of what they do in real time, too. Some purists might say that any pre-recorded moments at all are a cheat, but by the oft-canned standards of Twain’s contemporaries, she kind of counts as almost a stickler for authenticity.

And here, maybe, is the paradox of Shania Twain: While stage candor, real or staged, is not her thing, for all the regality of a show like this, she kind of comes off as the kind of idol you could have a beer with. Sure, it would be a beer at a castle in Switzerland, and it probably wouldn’t actually be beer , and think of the NDAs. It’s just that she still exudes the lucky-Canuck attitude she carried when she first arose in the ’90s, along with the temerity of the thousands of vocal scales and squats required to keep it up. Man: she feels like a workhorse, and a natural woman, too.

Shania Twain review: Queen of Country Pop brings humour, heartache and all the hits to London hoedown

18 September 2023, 17:57 | Updated: 19 September 2023, 13:03

It may've been Shania Twain's 'Queen Of Me' tour, but she came to London to reiterate her title as the one and only 'Queen Of Country Pop'.

There's only room for one 'Queen Of Country Pop'.

For her second sell-out show in a row at London's O2 Arena, Shania Twain 's loyal fans - old and new - flocked to Greenwich to celebrate their queen.

At one point throughout the concert, Shania gushed: "It touches me deeply that you guys are still with me", over twenty-five years on since her best-selling album Come On Over hit record shelves.

Despite her enduring commercial success, she still seems as grateful for her career as she did when she first broke through in 1997.

Women in music, especially mainstream music, can often be chewed up and spat out after reaching a certain period in their careers.

But even as she creeps closer to her sixtieth year on planet Earth, Shania is as popular and proud of her place in the pantheon of pop stars as she ever was.

The multi-generational crowd there to see Twain proved that her appeal has broadened, probably because she gladly embraces and laps up the camp aspects of her music and aesthetic.

And the celebrants in attendance made the country-pop crossover icon feel at home - 20,000 fabulously glittering cowboys and cowgirls ushered in the hoedown spirit before she even appeared on stage.

It may have been Shania's ' Queen Of Me ' tour, but she was there to reiterate her title as the one and only 'Queen Of Country Pop'.

As the stadium's lights dimmed with Shania expected to make her entrance, she popped up in the middle of the crowd for the concert's opener, 'Waking Up Dreaming'.

Decked out in a black rain mac, bouffant bleached-blonde wig and sunglasses, the audience lost their minds, especially those only feet away from her.

Carted around the front section of fans, it set the standard of what Shania's concerts have become - it's all about making her fans happy.

Whether or not it's inviting them on stage for photos, or especially on one occasion where she pulled out a bashful fan and her father for a quick a cappella sing-song, she ensures everyone goes home with a smile as beaming as hers.

"You know I love you London," she joked in a dodgy British impression which definitely cemented that notion, before she writhed around on her pink chromatic motorcycle for 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good!'.

Wearing a Versace bodice, flowing black cape and glittering black platform heels, Shania looked, acted, and clearly felt like someone half her age.

It's only during the softer, more gentle moments that she'd snap back into reality, as she described the stories behind the songs she'd written nearly thirty years ago.

A rousing rendition of ' You're Still The One ' ensured the teary floodgates opened early doors, as fairy-lit cowboy hats and phone lights illuminated the venue.

Alongside 'From This Moment On', these classic ballads served as the evening's main course of heartache.

Aside from the few intimate moments of connection between Shania and the 20,000 fans hanging on her every word however, it was a full-throttle rodeo throughout.

"If you haven’t noticed, I’m having the time of my life," she declared, between conducting the crowd to harmonise and letting out a gravelly laugh straight from the gut.

Shania's limber theatrics and powerful voice defied her years, with sheer enthusiasm and joy for her work propelling her.

Support act Breland joined her on stage for a duet of 'Inhale/Exhale Air' and 'Party For Two', a country pop prodigy to keep an eye on.

The age-defying 'Queen Of Country Pop' was having as much fun - if not more - than her adoring fans. (Photo by Burak Cingi/Redferns)

Though she was here in effect to tour and promote her latest album, Queen Of Me , Shania didn't over-egg the newer songs.

Barnstormer 'Giddy Up!' went down a treat, complete with fluorescent, screwball visuals, as did 'Number One'.

Her two backing singers/dancers are absolutely worthy of a special mention, who were brimming with camp energy and gleefully hyped up the crowd each time Shania took a breather.

But it was the finale that everyone wanted and needed, when she returned on stage in the iconic hooded leopard print robe, which she donned in global smash ' That Don't Impress Me Much '.

At Brad Pitt 's expense, Shania raised the roof with her legendary pop sing-a-long (well, more screaming than singing technically), though it didn't end there.

She couldn't justify not performing the song "which is as much yours as it is mine", bringing her concert to a close with everlasting sisterhood anthem ' Man! I Feel Like A Woman! '.

I wouldn't have thought it possible for a legendary star to as much fun during a concert as her crowds, but Shania - in this new era of self-acceptance, self-confidence, and contentment - made it possible.

'Let's go, girls!' Shania Twain reigns in Tulsa stop on 'Queen of Me Tour'

TULSA — The “Queen of Country Pop” blasted into Oklahoma ready to impress Saturday night.

Shania Twain proved she could still rule a stage, putting on a show to "shimmy, shake, make the earth quake," to the delight of her sold-out audience at Tulsa's BOK Center .

In the 30th year of her genre-defying career, the best-selling female artist in country music history is on the road with her "Queen of Me Tour," supporting her newly released sixth studio album of the same name.

It's the first tour and album for Twain, 57, since she underwent open-throat surgery in 2018 . Although her voice admittedly isn't what it once was, the five-time Grammy Award winner still knows how to show her fervent fans a "teasing, squeezing, pleasing kind of time."

Here are five highlights from Twain's Tulsa stop on her "Queen of Me Tour":

1. Shania Twain masters the art of misdirection

A boundary-smashing singer-songwriter who has sold more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Twain also reigns as a consummate entertainer, from her legendary music videos to her global tour success.

With the "Queen of Me Tour," the icon is opening her concerts with a master class in the magical art of misdirection: The Tulsa crowd thundered as the arena suddenly went dark and theatrical fog rolled. Twain's talented band took the stage — but she didn't.

Wearing sparkly cat-eye sunglasses and a chic black coat, Twain instead emerged in the midst of the floor seats and made her way to stage while singing her perky "Waking Up Dreaming." Her new electro-pop hit's lyrics about "making our way to Mars" set the stage for her anthemic "Up!" to be accompanied by a neon-hued rocket launch on a large LED screen.

With the word "Oklahoma" all but jumping off the high-definition video screen in big candy-colored letters, the Canadian Music Hall of Famer launched into the sassy and a little bluegrassy "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," a personal favorite from the 1990s. As she strutted in a bright yellow mini skirt with matching cape, a black midriff-bearing top with silver sparkles and fishnet stockings with short glittering black boots, this Gen Xer instantly flashed back to those days when Twain emerged as a pop culture phenomenon.

After the final chorus, Shania suddenly disappeared below the stage, leaving her pair of first-rate backup singer/dancers to engage the audience with an entertaining tap dance-off. The guys kept the crowd distracted long enough for Twain to make a dramatic reappearance perched on a silvery motorcycle shaped like a horse. She got us — and then lounged on the faux chopper to croon "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!"

2. Icon improvises a love song to her fans with opening act Breland

Although she is a living legend in the third decade of her career, the native of Timmins, Ontario, still possesses a small-town, down-to-earth air and seemed to genuinely relish her Tulsa crowd's unabashed adoration. Twain often flashed her familiar wide smile, threw out her arms triumphantly and even screamed with joy in between hits.

But the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer went above and beyond the usual fan service Saturday night when one enthusiastic concertgoer screamed out, "I love you, Shania!" She not only responded with the usual, "I love you, too," but she also spent several minutes improvising a heartfelt ballad about how much she loved Oklahoma.

"I promise you, that's a song," Twain said after singing a few lines. "I'll write it, I'll finish it, and then it will be our song."

She even invited her opening act, "Cross Country" up-and-comer Breland, to return to the stage to serenade the audience with her.

"We're writing a song right now. We're just doing this in the minute, and that's fine, because, Breland, you're so talented," Twain assured the "My Truck" hitmaker, who told the Tulsa audience during his entertaining set that he missed his 10-year high school reunion Saturday night to perform his first show on the icon's tour.

It wasn't the only time Twain paid tribute to her loyal devotees during the concert: She threw in a medley of fan favorites like "She's Not Just a Pretty Face," "Waiter! Bring Me Water!" and "When" that she hasn't regularly performed in concert prior to this tour. She brought a nightclub intimacy to the arena by inviting six pairs of concertgoers to stand at little tables on stage while she crooned her ardent chart-topper "From This Moment On."

"This is our song, so please sing along," Twain encouraged her fans.

Twain even invited two Oklahoma City hairstylists in the audience — one dressed in a replica Twain's iconic costume from the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" music video and the other paying homage to the superstar's memorable outfit from the "That Don't Impress Me Much" video — to join her on stage after seeing a video they posted on Instagram.

3. 'Queen of Me' balances familiar favorites and new anthems on tour

As with her 2015 "Rock This Country Tour" stop in OKC — that concert trek was initially billed as her farewell tour, but Twain decided along the way that she was not ready to say her last goodbye to the road — her "Queen of Me Tour" show in Tulsa cannily balanced songs from across her long and storied career.

The crowd thrilled as she zipped through her high-energy vintage hits like "Any Man of Mine," "Honey, I'm Home" "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under." Although I missed Shania classics like "No One Needs to Know" and "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!" that didn't make the set list, I'm not sorry I got to see and hear her proudly showcasing a slew of solid new songs.

Her raucous 2000 anthem "Rock This Country!" was accompanied by dazzling video fireworks, and she performed 2017's sultry come-on "Roll Me on the River," against a backdrop of LED fire and stage smoke. The simulated flames burned into a conflagration on her fiery new kiss-off "Pretty Liar."

Most of the Tulsa crowd happily went along for the ride on her fast-paced new ditty "Giddy Up!," her new dance-pop ballad "Number One" matched the oversized disco balls embedded in the stage, and her latest album's hip-shaking title track, which closed her main set, fits in with the tuneful empowerment anthems that have defined her career.

4. Superstar refuses to let vocal shortcomings keep her down

With all her well-documented struggles with her voice, it's a testament to Twain's hard work and determination that she's continuing to sing, record and tour at all. After she contracted Lyme disease from a 2003 tick bite, the lingering illness damaged nerves in her vocal cords, leading to her having open-throat surgery in 2018.

The first recording artist in history to release three consecutive diamond-certified albums, Twain more recently survived a near-fatal bout with COVID-19 and pnemonia .

"I’m not going to be perfect. My voice is not what it used to be. I sing differently. There’ll be holes in it. ... But I go out there with the confidence that I’m the best I can be and that I’ve worked hard to be my best," Twain told The Associated Press earlier this year .

"I’m there for the people that are embracing me for who I am. I will get out there and do my best to make everybody happy, as I always do."

Her voice isn't as strong or supple as it used to be, and it sometimes seemed to fade or get raspy, especially on her older ballads like "From This Moment On" and "Forever and for Always."

Fortunately, Twain's sassy confidence and sex appeal have not been diminished, and she has adopted coping strategies: She surrounds herself with great backup performers, pauses to share stories between songs and, especially, urges her eager fans to do just what they would do anyway: happily wail along with her.

"I'm having the time of my life, and I want to thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for having me here. I'm just really, really touched: I see all of your faces and hear all of your voices. It's very, very moving," she told the Tulsa crowd.

5. Shania Twain dons signature leopard-print outfit for a big finish

Never let it be said that Shania doesn't understand the impact of a dramatic entrance or a grand finale. Abruptly vanishing after "Queen of Me," she left the crowd clamoring for an encore.

With a sudden burst of light, she reappeared suddenly at the top of the stage to belt her smash "That Don't Impress Me Much" in a familiar leopard-print outfit.

"This is the original wardrobe from the 'That Don't Impress Me Much' video," she confirmed, recalling that she endured the heat of California's Salt Flats in the ensemble during filming.

Opening the hooded cloak to reveal her leopard-print bikini top and slinky matching pants, Twain then declared it "time to take this roof off." The crowd was screaming and shouting for her signature hit "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" before she could even drawl "Let's go, girls."

Like the rest of her show, the big finish showcased what made Shania a queen in the first place: Her knack for reminding people of their "prerogative to have a little fun" — and "doing it in style."

Shania Twain is a Canadian country music singer-songwriter originally from Ontario who is often affectionally referred to as "The Queen of Country Pop".

After Shania, real name Eileen Edwards graduated from Timmins High in June 1983 she quickly began her pursuit of a musical career after being involved with musicians and bands during her studies. She began experimenting with music yet following the tragic death of her mother and stepfather in a car accident she returned to her hometown to care for her younger siblings.

It was a number of years later that she released her solo album titled 'Shania Twain' through Mercury Nashville records which went on to chart at #67 on the US Country Charts. From this album, Shania's fame and success simply sky rocketed at an alarming pace that nobody could quite predict. 'The Woman in Me' debuted at #5 on the US charts and #6 in Canada, it featured a selection of country hit singles such as 'The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)', 'Any Man of Mine' and 'You Win My Love'. In total it featured six number one Country singles and two other top ten hits. It holds a two times diamond selling certificate in Canada and twelves times platinum selling in the States.

Her next album 'Come On Over' was an even greater success. It features two global hits of the 1990s, 'You're Still The One' and 'That Don't Impress Me Much' which charted around the world and turned Shania Twain into a household name. This album holds a twenty times platinum selling certificate in the US, a twelve times platinum in the UK and another double diamond in Canada. It is the highest selling Country album of all time. Shortly after the release of her 2002 album 'Up!' Shania was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame due to her huge musical success.

Her next album has been delayed for a number of years, she has since released a Greatest Hits package which featured three new tracks and in 2011 she reappeared with her first single in six years 'Today Is Your Day'. To date Twain has sold 85 million albums worldwide making her one of Country music's most successful female artists of all time.

Live reviews

Queen of country pop, Shania Twain, certainly knows how to put on a show. Currently a resident performer at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Shania is a real crowd pleaser.

This May I paid the venue a visit and boy did I enjoy the show! The opening number is truly spectacular. Three electric guitars jam along to the intro ‘Man I Feel like a Woman’ as strobe lights flash against a backdrop screen showing fire and explosions. Slowly, giant letters spelling the name ‘SHANIA’ descend from the ceiling. Then comes the distinctive trumpet blare and Twain announces in her trademark sultry tones, ‘let’s go girls!’ Stunning! What an opening to get the crowd going!

The show continues in a similar vein, with equally pleasing renditions of ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ and ‘I’m Gona Getcha Good.’ This show is guaranteed to get you singing and dancing along. I especially enjoyed the chance to let loose to my favourite tunes from my ’90s childhood!

Twain managed to lend the show an intimate feel in the huge arena, chatting to the audience between songs. The country queen even throws her hat into crowd during the final number, inviting whoever catches it to meet her backstage after the show! Shania Twain’s Caesar’s Palace show is one of the most fun nights out I’ve ever had and I’d thoroughly recommend checking it out.

Watching Shania Twain perform live is like watching an icon. Perhaps because it is watching an icon. Shania Twain is, without a doubt, the queen of Country. Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Twain has made a massive name for herself in the music industry and is one of the most famous names in Country music. Her style is really more Country pop, and her songs are catchy and fun. Even her ballads are catchy and her voice is undeniably beautiful and authentic. She performed all her greatest hits, including the massive ‘Man, I Feel Like a Woman’ (which opened the show on a great note), ‘You’re Still the One’ and the highly anticipated ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’. The latter song was met with a tremendous uproar as the crowd went wild and started singing along so loudly and robustly that the entire venue was trembling with the force of it. Shania was accompanied with a team of brilliant musicians. The violinists were particularly brilliant. Shania herself owned the stage, running around and singing with such enthusiasm and confidence.

It's rumoured nothing impresses Shania Twain very much but luckily for her fans the live show impresses them plenty. The Canadian singer/songwriter is one of the world's highest selling female artists of all time with a universal appeal so as you can imagine, the touring obligations are pretty serious when you have a fanbase this large to reach.

Unfortunately her appearances in the UK are often dwarfed by her commitments to the States although when she does appear on the British isles, the fans turn out in force. She is an unarguable diva with a stage presence all of her own, she commands everybody else onstage including the musicians, the dancers and even some of the technical crew. Then you take a glance at the hit laced setlist and realise she has 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman' '(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!' 'Come On Over' and 'You're Still the One' to keep the crowds singing, dancing and cheering along with effortless ease.

Fun Concert. Tons of ladies in the audience for a girls night out feel, still some guys though. Shania's male band members were on stage at times for that extra feel. You can't help but dance by a few songs. From her earlier days to mid-career hits and a few later, the pickings were getcha good. When it comes to props, she was "going up" and I enjoyed her outfit changes and some pre-recorded screen coverage of her beautiful in satin. "I feel like a woman!" It was a great concert to celebrate my birthday in my prime. Boots for myself would have enhanced mirroring the event!

I had the best time of my life she was everything I expected and more it was a present for my 65th birthday and I certainly wasn't disappointed I loved every minute of it it was absolutely fantastic I couldn't walk after it for a couple of days but it was worth it I've waited 20 years to see her and she was as good as the day she started out and just as beautiful can't wait to see her again could have stayed there all night and we just got home from New Jersey that morning love love loved it

five outta five stars

She has NOT her style! From the moment she stepped out on stage she kept the momentum goin! The highlight was a polish guy proposed to his NOW fiancee twice once in Polish and then in English! They stayed "Up!" there for "You're Still The One" which is really sweet! From This Moment On was another beautifully song sung perfectly by the 1999 CMA Entertainer of the year! It's no wonder why she's Billboards #1 tour!

It was an awesome show. I love the fact that she entered through one of the seating sections and surprised the audience. The stage was visually spectacular with huge LED box screens and a great drummer and musicians.

She had amazing dancers who were also back up singers. The music was great and as always Shania sounded and looked spectacular. Even my husband loved the song. ❤❤

Beyond AMAZING! The energy level, the stage production, the dancers, the musicians, the opening act, and definitely the star herself

made the evening memorable. Loved the way Shania "connected" with the audience. Just wish the musicians names and hometowns were shared. Even if it was credits that scrolled at the end. Entertainer of the Year award worthy performance!

Shania Twain surprises two Iowans by bringing them on stage at Wells Fargo Arena

shania twain tour dancers

Like any good queen, Shania Twain embraced some of her devoted fanbase, showed gratitude toward the thousands that gathered before her and never once faltered on stage, even in chunky, platform black boots.

“Alright, you guys,” Twain began, stopping to laugh when the screaming crowd failed to let up. “I mean first of all, what a welcome. Thank you.”

Just several songs into the set, Twain held her hands to her chest, closed her eyes and shook her head, taking the moment in.

“I can see you guys so well,” she said. “This is an awesome crowd.”

Des Moines was the second to last stop on the five-time Grammy winner’s Queen of Me U.S. tour, playing to nearly 13,000 people on Nov. 3 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Joining the singer that paved a trailblazing path of country and pop was Lily Rose, the Atlanta singer who opened for Twain and performed her debut hit, “Villain.”

Here are the Des Moines Register’s six favorite moments from Twain’s stunning show, from inviting fans on stage to one special outfit.

Two Iowans get special attention from Shania Twain

Once reading “old-fashioned letters” from fans, now Twain reads Instagram messages, she explained to the crowd over an hour into her set.

She read aloud a message from Trisha as a photo of a blonde-haired woman holding a young child appeared on the screens behind Twain. In her message to Twain, Trisha said she’d listened to the singer since she was a child with a boombox and that it would be her first time seeing Twain live.

“Get up here, Trisha, if you’re anywhere here," Twain called out to the crowd. "I would love to meet you.”

It was unclear to Twain whether Trisha was in the crowd for several minutes. So, she took a song request from a fan to kill time, singing, “Ka-Ching!” off her album, “Up!”

Twain sang a portion of the song before laughing when she realized she took a note too high. Still waiting for Trisha to make her way to the stage, Twain took another request, “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing," before seeking another person to join her on stage.

That person was Mitchell from Hull in Sioux County.

“I’m a sucker for a guy in plaid,” Twain said.

At the request of Mitchell’s wife, Jill, Twain sang a portion of “Any Man of Mine,” a song she performed earlier in the night. Mitchell, who told Twain he was scared, as repeated by Twain, loosened up once she began to perform, dancing in front of Twain.

After Mitchell left the stage, Trisha, from Pleasantville, made her way up to the singer.

“Poor Trisha, all she did was send an Instagram (message),” Twain said. “She didn’t know this was going to happen.”

Twain instructed Trisha to dance on stage while she sang a duet with Lily Rose, who returned for a performance of “Party of Two.” Trisha, who was visibly in shock throughout her time in the spotlight, grooved on stage, held hands with Twain, and hugged her at the end of the song. Before Trisha left the stage, Twain insisted the duo get a photo together.

“For me, this is all about making memories and memorable moments,” Twain said. “And you guys have been so patient… I just mean, thank you for allowing me to indulge in my personal moments because they mean everything to me. I love to meet you guys and make that connection. It’s everything."

Shania Twain gets Des Moines to become her personal choir

“OK, you guys are wild,” Twain called out after “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?”

“We’re going to do some real singing here right now,” she said, dividing the audience into thirds to sing the word honey in increasingly higher notes.

After a bit of practice, Twain was more than satisfied by the crowd’s vocal abilities.

“This is my Queen of Me tour choir here tonight,” she said. “The Des Moines Queen of Me choir.

“This might be the best choir yet, honestly, right guys,” she said, turning to her band. The vocal warmups were for Twain’s next song, “Honey, I’m Home,” off her 1997 album “Come On Over.”

Shania Twain makes an entrance, and it's not on stage

Nearly 30 minutes after Twain was expected to take the stage, three spotlights suddenly shone down on the floor seats of the audience. More specifically, one row on the floor, illuminating what appeared from afar to be three boxes evenly spaced apart, each covered in a cloth material. It was clear Twain was about to kick off the show offstage, but from where?

Like something out of a magic show, Twain was revealed to be in the middle of the aisle, donning a black trench coat and sunglasses as she sung “Waking Up Dreaming.” Some lucky fans with floor seats were treated to an up-close look at the singer as she was carted toward the main stage on her moving platform.

How one Shaina Twain song has been transformed by fans’ perspectives

Special attention was given to the song “From This Moment On,” off the album “Come On Over.” The song peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1998.

Audience members were invited to the stage, standing near high tables adorned with dim lights as fog gave the stage a hazy look . Twain took photos with her guests, who remained on stage for the song, their presence making it as if Twain was performing for an intimate crowd at a club. Twain serenaded the crowd, slow dancing with one of her backup vocalists and dancers who lifted her as she delivered a powerful note, her neck arched with one leg kicked behind her for added drama.

“It was beautiful listening to you sing along,” she said. “I think that song is just everyone’s song. You write music and it always means something so personal to me in the moment but once I release I realize, especially when I get to meet fans and talk to them about what a specific song means to them or to their life or to someone they know, then I realize that I really let the song go and it becomes everyone’s personal moment.”

A motorcycle and a medley

Cue sounds of an engine revving. After performing “Up!” Twain let her body, and a prop, do the talking for “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” Twain, in her neon long-sleeved blouse, shorts, platform boots and emerald jewelry, put her sunglasses back on and sat herself on a white motorcycle, lifting one leg high for some flair. It was just one of many moments Twain appeared to be having plenty of fun, including when she performed a medley of songs she said she doesn’t often perform live, including “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face,” “When,” “Thank You Baby! (For Makin’ Someday Come So Soon),” “Nah!” and “Waiter! Bring me Water!"

‘Let’s Go Girls!’ to Shania Twain’s encore

Fans who’ve seen the music video for “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” would have recognized the outfit Twain wore for her encore performance.

Twain was in all black, including a floor-length coat reminiscent of a gown that teased a corset and thigh-high boots beneath, paired with black gloves and a black hat.

This was no replica of what she wore in the music video over two decades ago. It was all original, she said.

“Since the day I shot the video, that day was the only day I got to wear it, and ever since then it’s been in a museum,” Twain said, realizing that she’d only worn it once.

So, she took it on tour.

Twain performed “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” for her encore.

“Iowa, honestly, you guys have blown me away right now,” Twain said. “I just need to say once again, thank you for the welcome. Thank you for singing with me and, not just tonight, but for being with me for so many years in my career.”

Eileen Regina Edwards was born Aug. 28, 1965. After her mother remarried, she changed her last name to Twain. At some point Twain met Shania and you know how those two worked out.

Her mantelpiece is adorned with 20-plus major music awards, ranging from five Grammys to Junos, CCMAs, World Music Awards and a 2000 Danish Music Award for Foreign Hit of the Year. Somewhat ironically, this citation from the land that gave us Aqua, Volebeat and Mø , was for the hit That Don’t Impress Me Much.

What does impress fans about this country/pop crossover megastar is her ability to keep on coming back. Five years since she wowed crowds on 2018’s Now Tour, Twain is once again riding high in the charts with Queen of Me. Her sixth album, and the first to ship with a parental advisory label, entered the Top 10 in Canada, Australia, the U.S. and was her third No. 1 in the U.K.

Pretty good results for someone who nearly lost her voice forever due to dysphonia and the effects of Lyme disease before recording 2017’s Now.

As she prepares for back-to-back concerts in Vancouver, as well as a final tour date on Nov. 14, here are five things to consider about the Queen of Me Tour:

Great concert reviews

Vancouver Sun country music writer Larry Pynn set a tone for all future Twain concert reviews in his June 10, 1998, piece on her local show, noting that “the reigning queen of country pop put the boots to her naysayers Tuesday night during a two-hour, raucous love-in at GM Place, emerging as a confident vocalist, a standup entertainer and, eh, the Canadian girl next door.”

At a second date on that same tour in April, 1999, The Province’s John P. McLaughlin tapped into what has been key to the singer’s enduring success, the hard work she puts into engaging audiences from the stage: “Whatever else Shania Twain may or may not be, she is first-and-foremost all about fun and there was a packed house of 17,000-plus people who had a ball last night.”

This thread carries across all of the artist’s tours, right up to yours truly reviewing her May 5, 2018, back-to-back gigs at Rogers Arena on the comeback NOW Tour: “Twain talked a lot about coming back from a hard time and her life’s course over the past decade. It has been well-documented how her divorce, complete vocal paralysis due to complications of Lyme disease and abusive upbringing were major hurdles to clear to come back … Shania NOW is every bit as good as Shania then.”

Expect more of the same from this coming tour.

Farewell tour

Following in the footsteps of divas from Cher to Elton John, Twain also bid goodbye to live performances in 2015. The Rock this Country Tour, her first in 11 years, was billed as her farewell. That announcement didn’t even last the length of the tour as Twain decided to take-up a multi-year residency in Las Vegas only three months after announcing her live touring goodbye.

Man! I Feel Like a Woman

This smash hit from 1997’s Come On Over is the most-performed song in Twain’s concerts, although Setlist.fm reports a spread of only nine points between this tune and No. 5, 1995’s Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? The full list is, in order: Man! I Feel Like a Woman!; Any Man of Mine; That Don’t Impress Me Much; You’re Still the One; and Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Pretty Liar

About that parental advisory on Queen of Me, it’s due to this little dittie that documents a dirty dance with a disreputable partner. In this cast one who is described as “You’re such a f—–g liar/Another level higher/Your pants are on fire.” In an interview with iheartradio , Twain explained that many of the songs she’s written over the years included such sassy language, but this was the first time she decided to keep one in the final recording. Fans probably don’t need to worry about her suddenly dropping GG Allin covers into her shows.

Still one of the Top 10

A South China Morning Post article from Nov. 22, 2022, listing the Top 10 Wealthiest Pop Divas has the Timmins, Ont.-raised artist’s estimated net worth as US$400 million. The ranking sees Twain join other pop royalty such as Rihanna, Madonna and Beyoncé on the list. A Queen, indeed.

Watch Now: Shania Twain “Giddy Up” Dance VIdeo

Strutting into 2023, five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning legend and the best-selling female artist in country music history  Shania Twain  shares a brand-new single entitled  “Giddy Up!”  today.

shania twain tour dancers

Listen to  “Giddy Up!”  HERE  and watch the video  HERE .

The track sets the stage for her eagerly awaited new album,  Queen of Me , arriving on February 3, 2023. It notably stands out as her sixth original full-length offering, first record since 2017, and official debut for her new label partner  Republic Nashville , a division of  Republic Records .

Kickstarting the record,  “Giddy Up!”  rides out of the gate with a fiery, flirty, and fun chorus tailormade for singing and dancing along. As always, it showcases her show-stopping range and undeniable charisma.

Shania  says, “The saying “Let’s Go Girls!” is such a wonderfully uplifting sentiment now, but it’s just something I said during the recording in the studio and I guess that’s the same for “Giddy Up!”. These lines come to me when I’m thinking about how to put a little “pep in my step.” I want people to feel good when they hear the new album. I want to set a celebratory tone and “Giddy Up!” is a way to call to the audience and say “let’s get ready for some fun!”

In other big news,  Shania  recently earned the “Music Icon” award at the 2022  People’s Choice Awards , and she lit up the stage with a rapturous performance – watch  HERE .

Queen of Me  consists of 12 new tracks. From the energetic opener  “Giddy Up!”  through the empowered title track  “Queen of Me”  and passionate finale “The Hardest Stone,” produced by and featuring Tyler Joseph (Twenty One Pilots), the LP represents a deep and dynamic creative statement from this iconic voice. She set the stage for everything with the single  “Waking Up Dreaming”  which Rolling Stone called “a shot of caffeinated bliss” and The Today Show called “an absolute bop.”

Shania was also announced as a headliner for  Rock the Ocean’s Tortuga Festival , alongside Eric Church and Kenny Chesney. The star-studded festival will take place on April 14-16, 2023 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. For more information, go  HERE .

To celebrate this next era in style, she will also embark on a global  Queen of Me   Tour , produced by Live Nation. The tour marks the first time fans around the world will get to see the queen in all of her glory in nearly five years, following a highly successful Vegas residency run. Kelsea Ballerini, Lindsay Ell, Hailey Whitters, Breland, Robyn Ottolini, Priscilla Block, and Mickey Guyton, Lily Rose, Talk, and Tenille Townes will be joining Shania on select dates throughout the tour.

The  Queen of Me Tour  kicks off on Friday, April 28th at Spokane Arena in Spokane, WA and makes stops across North America and Europe in Vancouver, Denver, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, Dublin and more before wrapping up on November 14th at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC.

CONCERT REVIEW: Shania impresses us much in fun, emotional show

Twain played for over two hours

Article content

Scotiabank Arena

CONCERT REVIEW: Shania impresses us much in fun, emotional show Back to video

RATING:***1/2 (3 and 1/2 out of four)

Third time’s the charm for Shania Twain.

The ‘90s crossover country music star from Canada brought her Queen of Me tour to Scotiabank Arena on Sunday night after two earlier summer stops outdoors at Budweiser Stage this year.

And the Timmins-raised Twain clearly came to have fun and get a bit emotional about being “back home” in Canada.  She opened her two-hour and 15 minute show emerging from the floor on a small moving platform for the concert opener, “Wake Up Dreaming,” from her 2023 “Queen of Me” album.

“This was my training ground,” Twain, 58, recalled of taking 13-hour train rides from Timmins to Toronto early in her career.

“I’m super proud to be a Canadian.”

The production, relatively low-key by today’s standards, reflected that patriotism as the word Ontario showed up on the huge screen behind her during “Don’t Be Stupid,” the word Toronto during I’m “Gonna Getcha Good” – which saw Twain writhing around on a motorcycle – and the Canadian flag during “Rock This Country!”

Twain, backed by a six-piece band including two incredible male backup singers-dancers and a female drummer, also showed off her great nephew who was brought up on stage by her nephew Dylan – the son of sister Carrie – and was impressed by the infant’s mellow behaviour despite some 20,000 fans staring at him.

“He was so good!” she exclaimed.

But it was an opera singer by the name of Daniela whose presence really made an impression as Twain explained she got an Instagram message from her before Sunday night’s show to say she had sung on stage with the country-pop star in the same venue 22 years ago when she was only eight years old and her dad was still alive.

Naturally, Twain had to bring Daniela – now 30 years old – back up on stage again Sunday night and asked her to sing some opera for the crowd which she gamely did with a bit of “From this Moment On.”

“Is this really happening?” asked Daniela before telling Twain: “You changed my life.”

“I’m so proud of you,” responded an emotional Twain.

Otherwise, it was definitely the older hits that brought the fans – many decked out in cowboy hats (some glow in the dark), boots and fringed jackets – to their feet including “Come On Over,” “Any Man of Mine,” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?”, “Honey I’m Home,” “Party for Two,” and “(If You’re Not In It For Love) I’m Outta here.”

There were also quieter moments that stood out like “Still The One,” which Twain told Toronto concertgoers was “our song,” “From this Moment On,” which saw about 20 fans brought on stage while Twain went around taking photos with them all and “Forever and for Always” which saw the place lit up with cellphone lights at Twain’s encouragement.

Costume-wise, Twain kept it simple yet sexy on Sunday night in a black and camouflage top with lots of sequins and a long train over a black body suit, fishnet stockings, sparkly black platform shoes and lots of jewelry.

A costume change didn’t come until the very end as she reappeared for the encore songs, “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” in her famous leopard print floor-length shawl coat, bustier, pants, and shoes.

She explained she had only ever worn the outfit once during the famous video for “That Don’t Impress Me Much” so decided to take it on tour to wear whenever she liked.

Good decision, as the crowd roared its approval.

Shania Twain Praises Taylor Swift's 'Passion' and Work Ethic: 'She Is Living an Exhausting Existence'

"That girl is working her butt off," the country icon told 'Haute Living' of Swift as she celebrates 25 years of her 'Come on Over' album

Brian Bowen Smith

Shania Twain can relate to Taylor Swift 's massive successes and busy touring schedule.

As the country icon celebrates 25 years of her blockbuster Come on Over album, she opened up in a new cover story interview with Haute Living about paving the way for other women in music and praised Swift's work ethic as well as her passion.

"It wasn’t like I intended on being a trailblazer or anything; I never even realized I would be," Twain, 58, told the outlet. "I was just trying to be original, my authentic self, and to do it with conviction. I’m an expressive person, and I put that into my music. I was saying it with attitude and with confidence because I meant it."

The "You're Still the One" singer said it's a "compliment" to be called a trailblazer, though she didn't see her career path heading in that direction in the beginning: "I was just being myself, and I think that’s served me very well."

Of course, artists including Swift, 34, have given Twain her flowers over the years for inspiring them, and she returned the favor in the Haute Living interview. "That girl is working her butt off. She is living an exhausting existence, but she’d dedicated and committed to herself, to her art, and her work," she said of the "Karma" musician.

"It isn’t even about ambition, though I’m sure that most people would call her ambitious. She’s an extremely hard worker, and I’m sure she’s got giant goals. But it’s not all about ambition: it’s about passion and committing yourself to your passion," continued Twain —  who attended Swift's Eras Tour in March 2023 .

She then compared herself to Swift, noting their similar career approaches and how working with passion "reaps rewards" for artists. "So, I would say that I’m most proud of my perseverance, and that I didn’t waste my talents," she added.

The Grammy winner is currently gearing up to celebrate the anniversary of Come on Over with her upcoming Las Vegas residency of the same name, which launches next month at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Returning to the album that spawned hits including "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," "You're Still the One," "Honey, I'm Home," "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" has allowed Twain to see her past work in a new light.

"At the time [of release], I wasn’t able to fully be in the moment and enjoy it," she told Haute Living of the 1997 album. "There were so many singles, so many videos, and so much work involved that I didn’t really take it all in. Now, looking back, I’m experiencing certain things for the first time. I’m being reminded of things that I may not have been able to take in at that moment."

Having already experienced success on a high level with her 1995 album, The Woman in Me , she wasn't quite sure what to expect with Come on Over .

"I’d already felt like I’d achieved everything that most artists can ever achieve. My previous album, The Woman in Me, had surpassed diamond status," she recalled. "I remember thinking, This probably won’t happen again, lightning doesn’t strike twice , and that I was just going to have fun with what came next. So that’s what I did."

Twain added, "You can hear it in the album: I experimented more, I stretched boundaries, but I was more relaxed about it. And so, Come on Over became a celebration album."
