"Abode of Lord Venkateswara Swamy"

Tirupati tourism.

Situated in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is known for Lord Venkateshwara Temple, one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the world. It is also one of the world's richest temples known by different names - Tirumala Temple, Tirupati Temple, and Tirupati Balaji Temple . Tirumala is one of the seven hills in Tirupati, where the main temple is located. The temple is believed to be where Lord Venkateshwara took the form of an idol and is home to the deity Govinda. Tirupati is one of India's oldest cities and is mentioned in many ancient Vedas and Puranas.

Tirupati is the main town, while Tirumala Hills is where Tirupati Balaji Temple is situated. Also called Sri Venkateshvara Swami Vaari Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, believed to be a form of Lord Vishnu, who appeared on earth to save mankind from kali yuga. The famous Tirupati Laddoo, given as a prasad at the temple, has the Geographical indication tag, which means it can only be made and sold at the temple. It is hugely loved by the pilgrims and is generally included in the paid darshan tickets or can be bought from the laddoo counters inside the temple complex. Many devotees also tonsure their heads as an offering to Lord Venkateswara Swamy once their wish is fulfilled or to get rid of their sins and ego. It is done free of cost at  Kalyanakatta  buildings. Another popular ritual at Tirupati Temple is Thulabaram, wherein a devotee sits on one side of the weighing balance scale. In contrast, the other side is filled with materials (like sugar, jaggery, tulsi leaves, banana, gold, and coins) more than the weight of the devotee. This ritual is mostly performed with children and infants. The non-stop chanting of ‘Om Namo Venkatesaya,’ the mad pilgrim rush, and the 8-feet tall idol of Lord Venkateshwara – everything about the Sri Venkateshwara Temple is majestic. Spread over an area of 26 kilometers and is visited by nearly 50,000 pilgrims daily. The Padmavathi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Padmavati, consort of Lord Venkateswara, is situated at Tiruchanoor in Tirupati town. Many devotees believe they should visit Goddess Padmavati and seek her blessings before visiting Lord Venkateswara Swamy at Tirumala. There are other temples in Tirupati too that you can visit, including the Sri Kalahasti temple, Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, the Kondandarama Temple, the Parashurameshwara Temple, and the ISKCON temple. Tirupati is home to a unique geological wonder that you shouldn’t miss out on! The Silathoranam is a natural arch formed out of rocks and is located at the Tirumala Hills.

Due to this she landed on Earth and settled here. In search of his beloved, Lord Vishnu also came to earth and was named as Srinivasa. After all his efforts went in vain, he decided to dwell at Tirumala hills and continue his search. Meanwhile, he met the beautiful daughter of the King of the seven hills in Tirumala, Padmavati. A huge price was demanded by the king. Thus, Lord Vishnu took a loan of one crore and 11.4 million gold coins from Kubera. • Hundi Contributions: The temple’s Hundi (donation pot) collects millions of rupees daily, making it one of the wealthiest religious institutions in the world due to the devout offerings from pilgrims.
  • Massive Pilgrim Influx: Tirupati Balaji Temple is one of the most visited religious places globally, with tens of thousands of pilgrims flocking daily, numbers that surge into hundreds of thousands during special festivals and occasions.
  • Debt to Kubera: According to legend, Lord Venkateswara took a loan from Kubera, the god of wealth, for his marriage to Goddess Padmavathi. It is said that the donations from devotees are a way to help the Lord repay this debt.
  • Mysterious Image: The idol of Lord Venkateswara bears striking features, including a unique arch that is said to be self-manifested. The temperature of the idol remains constant, and despite the heavy use of camphor, which typically cracks stone, the idol has remained intact over centuries.
  • Waterfall Hair Wash: The water used to bathe Lord Venkateswara’s idol comes from a waterfall known as Akasa Ganga, considered sacred and believed to originate from the divine lotus feet of the Lord.

These facts only scratch the surface of the deep spiritual and cultural richness that surrounds Tirupati Balaji, making it a fascinating subject of study and pilgrimage.

Tirupati Balaji Temple

The holy city dedicated to Lord Vishnu is dotted with numerous other temples that are regarded high by the pilgrims who come to get a glimpse of him as Lord Venkateshwara. Anything and everything associated with the Lord becomes venerated, thus making the town one of the most visited religious places in the world. The history of the city has been almost always associated with that of Lord Venkateshwara Temple but their origin is obscured by the layers of antiquity. Constant devotion of the rulers of various Southern dynasties in different centuries has kept the revered destination intact, as pilgrims witness it today.

Pallavas, Pandayas, Cholas and Kings of Vijaynagar Empire were the main contributors who added to the wealth and value of the temple. The biggest addition was made by Krishnadevaraya who also got gold statues of himself and his wives installed in the temple. The enhancement of wealth was continued by the other Hindu rulers like Ragoji Bhosle. The treasure of the temple is growing since then as pilgrims give away a part of their riches in devotion to the Lord Venkateswara.

Deities of Temple include Dhruva Beram, Kautuka Beram, Sanapana Beram, Utsava Beram and Bali Beram. Each one of them are worshipped through vastly different rituals which is also something of interest to the tourists and pilgrims, making the temple the most visited worship place of the world. Its riches and treasures are second only to Sree Padamanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

Tirupati Balaji Temple: A Complete Travel Guide

India is a land of culture, where an amalgam of various traditions from different religions can be seen. The country houses various temples, mosques, churches, and gurudwaras, where people pay their respects and pray to the Almighty, irrespective of caste or creed. The unity in people, the fervour with which all the festivals are celebrated – that’s the beauty that India reflects on other countries.

People in the country undertake a lot of pilgrim yatras, which has made some of the religious places well-known amongst tourists. One such famous religious sites in India is the Tirupati Balaji Temple.

Also known as the Lord Venkateshwara Temple, it is one of the richest temples in the country, located in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. Perched in the Tirumala Hills, it is said that the temple is constructed where Lord Venkateshwara (a form of Lord Vishnu) took the form of an idol. Tirupati is one of the oldest cities in the country, having various mentions in Vedas and Puranas; Tirupati Balaji’s darshan will bring you closer to such ancient scripts. The Tirumala Hills is a Saptagiri (one of the seven hills), surrounded by the Eastern Ghats. It is believed that the seven peaks are the seven hoods of the Adishesha or the Sheshnag (Serpent God) that cushions Lord Vishnu.

Going Down the Historic Lanes of Tirupati Balaji Temple

Every ancient religious site or forts in India has a history associated with it. Legends that can intrigue you, interest you into visiting the place. And rightfully so, even the Tirupati Balaji Temple has a history that you should know of.

Tirupati’s history has always been associated with the Venkateshwara Temple and its origin predates to the ancient times of kings and rajas. The rulers of various dynasties of the South, over different decades, and their devotion towards Lord Vishnu has helped in preserving the authenticity and beauty of the temple, which visitors can see today by booking their  Tirupati package  for a devotional time.

The Pandayas, Pallavas, Cholas, and Kings of the Vijaynagar Empire were the main contributors who enhanced the wealth and value of the temple. Krishnadevaraya is said to have contributed to the most. What’s more interesting is that he got gold statues of himself and his wives installed in the temple premises. Apart from the main contributors, other Hindu rulers like Ragoji Bhosle also contributed to the wealth of the temple. The treasure of the temple keeps growing every single year as pilgrims and devotees donate part of their earnings and riches to the temple, in the devotion of Lord Venkateshwara.

Deities Residing in the Temple

Along with the 8-feet tall idol of Lord Venkateshwara, other deities that reside in the temple are Dhruva Beram, Sanapana Beram, Kautuka Beram, Utsava Beram, and Bali Beram. Each of the deity is worshipped according to the majestic rituals that were laid down centuries ago. When the rituals are performed, the vibe in the temple becomes so divine that you are bound to slip into a different world. So, if you are booking Tirupati Balaji darshan, you can also pay your respect to the other deities residing there.

The temple is echoed by the non-stop chanting of ‘Om Namo Venkatesaya’, which lifts the spirituality in the aura, making pilgrims submerge themselves in the lap of Lord Vishnu’s devoutness. This is something that attracts tourists and pilgrims from all over the world, making it India’s most-visited temple.

Attractions that Will Make Your Divine Spirit Even More Content

There are a lot of  places to visit near Tirupati ; listed below are some of the temples that you must make a stop at: –

The temple celebrates festivities with grandeur and several Vaishnava festivals are celebrated, making the temple an even more famous attraction for pilgrims and tourists all around the world, let alone India. You can opt for online booking of Tirupati Balaji through their Devasthanam site, in case you don’t opt for a package.

Silathoranam

The Silathoranam is a natural rock formation that resembles a conch, discus, and serpent hood, which is similar to the one of Adishesha. Adishesha is known to be the supporting nether of Lord Vishnu, making the Silathoranam an attraction of utmost importance in Tirumala.

Kapilateertham

Tirupati is known to house mostly Vaishnavites temples; however, Kapilateertham is one of the Shaivites temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and also happens to be one of the  famous South Indian temples  in the country. It is located in the foothills of the Tirumala Hills and houses a water tank, where all the pilgrims take a dip before moving ahead to the Lord Venkateshwara temple.

Lord Rama is highly revered as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple was built in honour of the divine couple’s return from Sri Lanka. It is believed that Lord Rama and Sita Maata stayed inside the temple premises for a few days, making the place even more sacred for their devotees.

Sri Kalyana Venkateshwaraswami Temple

Believed to be the place where the mythological wedding of Lord Venkateshwara and Devi Padamavathi took place, this temple is of high significance to the pilgrims. The temple is located in Narayanavanam and every pilgrim visiting Tirupati Balaji makes a stop here.

It is reported that the temple welcomes around 50,000 pilgrims every day, which is the highest number of devotees visiting a temple in India. The entry for Balaji darshan at Tirupati is through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. This complex is a series of interconnected halls that lead the pathway to the main temple. The halls of the complex are extremely clean and hygienic, with various facilities that make the pilgrims feel comfortable during their Tirupati Balaji darshan.

City Shopping in Tirupati

It may not be the ideal shopping destination but Tirupati does have places where you can shop for some unique, one-of-its-kind beautiful things. Starting with something that devotees will like – you can find various shops and stalls right outside the Tirupati Balaji temple where you can find beautifully crafted figurines of the deity, CDs filled with religious shlokas and songs, holy prasadams and laddoos that you can relish on.

Apart from this, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (the temple trust that enables online booking for Tirupati Balaji darshan) also publishes various religious books and periodicals that pilgrims can get their hands on. Audio and video cassettes/CDs of Vedas, Sankirtans, and Pravachanams are also released by the Devasthanam. If you plan on taking some souvenir back to your hometown, photo frames, jewellery, and idols made of brass and copper are also available with them.

Coming to the city shopping, Tirupati is famous for housing some of the most skilled craftsmen, who create marvellous paintings and handicrafts for your purchase. You can find various wood-carved toys, pottery items, Kalamkari fabric, and other such artworks that allures you to buy them for yourself and your loved ones.

The Tanjore Style Painting

One of the most famous and proud assets of Tirupati are the traditional Tanjore style gold leaf painting. Also known as the Thanjavur style of painting, it is practised at Mandanapalli, a town near Tirupati and is an authentic form of South Indian art that traces back to 1600 AD. The Tanjore style paintings are vibrant in colour with glittering gold foil, glass beads, and precious gems carved on them. The paintings are done on wooden planks, which are known as Palagai Padam and art-lovers, non-art-lovers, and everyone who sees the gorgeousness of the paintings fall in love with them.

If at all you feel like doing some luxury shopping during your Tirupati Balaji tour– Chandan Ramesh and TMC shopping malls are your places to go. For city shopping, you can visit places like Bazaar Street, Lepakshi Emporium, APCO Handloom House, Beri Street, A.K. Palli Road, and Prakasham Road.

Reaching Tirupati Balaji Temple

Balaji mandir pune timings.

Sri Balaji Mandir Pune is a close replica of the famous Balaji Temple of Tirumala, Tirupati . Therefore, people also call it Prati Balaji Mandir and Mini Balaji Mandir.

It is built amidst lush green landscape, in a peaceful environment. And it is a treat for those who want to get the blessings of Lord Balaji. All pujas and sevas in this Balaji Mandir at Pune are performed by priests from the Tirupati Balaji Temple. You even get laddoo as prasad (like Tirupati Temple).

Where is Balaji Temple Pune?

Shree Balaji Mandir Pune is at Ketkawale, near Narayanpur. It is about 45 kilometres away from Pune. The road passes through green fields, gurgling streams and many small cascading waterfalls as you approach the temple. So, even the route to the temple is a memory worth savouring.

Architecture of Balaji Mandir

The Tirupati Balaji Mandir near Pune has been constructed under the guidance of Tirumala Tirupati Temple Devasthanam.

As you enter the premises, you'll come across the beautifully crafted entrance gate. It is made up of stone. The temple walls have carvings similar to the original temple. And the interior is decorated with woodwork.

The black stone and other building materials used in the temple have been brought from Kanchipuram. And the main deity of the temple, Lord Balaji, is carved in wood. It is painted with grey oil paint.

It took almost 7 years, from 1996 to 2003, to build this temple.

Things to do at balaji mandir pune.

Prati Balaji Mandir in Pune performs all pujas and sevas, as done in the Tirupati Balaji Temple. Here, you can witness the Suprabhatam ritual and the daily idol worships. Shuddhi and Ekantseva rituals are also held daily.

And on every Friday, the temple carries out Abhishekam and Unjal-Seva.

Balaji Temple also celebrates festivals like Ram Navami, Vijaya Dashami and Deepavali. Vaikunta Ekadasi, Kanu Pongal and Gudi Padva too, are observed here. People also come here to seek blessings on the Tamil New Year. The temple is decorated with flowers and bright colourful lights on that day.
