Review: In ‘Six,’ All the Tudor Ladies Got Talent

The exuberant queenhood-is-powerful pageant about the wives of Henry VIII was shut down on opening night by the pandemic. Now it’s back, and it totally rules.

six tour theatre

By Jesse Green

Are you an Elsa or an Anna ? An Elphaba or a Glinda ? Or, for those with more classic tastes, a Vera or a Mame ?

Musicals typically offer just two prototypes of dynamic womanhood: a twinsie set of dark and light. To hit a real Broadway sister lode you have to time travel further back than “Frozen,” “Wicked” or even “Mame”: half a millennium back, as it happens. In “ Six ,” the queenhood-is-powerful pageant about the wives of Henry VIII that took a bow — finally! — at the Brooks Atkinson Theater on Sunday evening, Tudor London is the place to be if you’re looking for a sextet of truly empowered, empowering megastars.

Of course, you do have to get past the little hitch of “divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived.” But so what if the show’s view of the wives is counterfactual? Their power may have been limited during their lives by men, misogyny and the executioner, and diminished afterward by the dust of time, but hey, it’s still a tale you can dance to.

That’s the animating paradox behind the entertainment juggernaut that froze in its tracks when Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered theaters closed in response to the coronavirus outbreak just hours shy of the show’s opening on March 12, 2020. In the ensuing 18 months, a fitter catchphrase for the musical-in-waiting seemed to be “divorced, beheaded, quarantined.”

But now it is here, all but exploding with the pent-up energy of its temporary dethroning. And though after seeing a tryout in Chicago I wrote that “Six” was “destined to occupy a top spot in the confetti canon,” two questions nagged at me as I awaited its arrival on Broadway: How can a show formatted as a Tudors Got Talent belt-off among six sassy divas also be a thoughtful experiment in reverse victimology? And how can history be teased, ignored and glorified all at once?

Yet somehow “Six,” by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, isn’t a philosophically incoherent jumble; it’s a rollicking, reverberant blast from the past. I don’t just mean that it’s loud, though it is; you may clutch your ears even before the audience, primed by streaming audio and TikTok, starts singing along to the nine inexhaustibly catchy songs.

I also mean that though gleefully anachronistic, mixing 16th-century marital politics with 21st-century selfies and shade, it suggests a surprising, disturbing and ultimately hopeful commonality. Which shouldn’t work, but does.

True, it sometimes works too well; the brand discipline here is almost punishing. What began as a doodle devised during a poetry class at Cambridge University is now as tightly scripted as a space launch. When the wives emerge in turn to tell their stories after a group introduction — “Remember us from PBS ?” — we discover that they are literally color-coded. As if designed by a marketing expert in a spreadsheet frenzy, each is also equipped with a recognizable look , a signature song genre and a pop star “queenspiration.”

It only makes sense that Henry’s first and longest-wed wife, Catherine of Aragon (Adrianna Hicks), would be a golden Beyoncé. Her anti-divorce anthem “No Way” could be retitled “Keep a Ring on It”: “My loyalty is to the Vatican/So if you try to dump me, you won’t try that again.”

Henry’s third and best-loved wife, Jane Seymour (Abby Mueller), wears black and white and sings “ Heart of Stone ,” a torch song that instantly recalls Adele’s “Hello.” Two wives later, Katherine Howard (Samantha Pauly) arrives as a pink, ponytailed Ariana Grande, with a chewy wad of bubble gum pop called “All You Wanna Do.”

They and the other wives are supposedly competing not just as singers but also, oddly, as losers. “The queen that was dealt the worst hand,” we are told, “shall be the one to lead the band” — though that’s just a figure of speech; the blazing four-woman group that accompanies the show, in studded black pleather, is led by the musical director, Julia Schade.

That’s no accident; the choreographer (Carrie-Anne Ingrouille), scenic designer (Emma Bailey) and costume designer (Gabriella Slade) are also women, and so is the co-author Moss, who with Jamie Armitage serves as director. That “Six” so strongly embodies feminism in its staffing while at the same time building its story on a contest of female degradation is an example of how it sometimes seems, on close inspection, to be at cross-purposes with itself.

This would be a more serious problem if the authors were unaware of it. But even when they double down on the Mean Girl catfighting, they do it smartly enough that you trust they are heading somewhere. Thus you enjoy the snarky upspeak of wife No. 2, Anne Boleyn (Andrea Macasaet), insisting that the other women’s woes cannot possibly compare to her decapitation. Her Lily Allen-like number: “Don’t Lose Ur Head.”

Likewise, the humblebragging of No. 4, Anne of Cleves, here called Anna (Brittney Mack), is too deliciously on point to cloy. “ Get Down ,” her funky rap about cushy post-divorce life — 17 years of luxury in exchange for six months of loveless marriage — sounds like Nicki Minaj could sing it tomorrow, tipping her crown to Kanye West: “Now I’m not saying I’m a gold digger, but check my prenup and go figure.”

The wit of the conception and the execution — the songs are a slick blend of pop grooves, tight lyrics and old-fashioned musical theater craft — goes a long way toward keeping the show from sagging. (The almost indecently short 80-minute run time also helps.) The texture is kept sparkly by salvos of puns (“live in consort”) and thematically dense by the threading of themes. Musical themes, too: Though the score samples hip-hop, electronica, house music and soul, one recurrent melody, introduced on harpsichord during the preshow, is “Greensleeves,” supposedly written by Henry as a love token to Anne Boleyn. Her color, obvs, is green.

Still, I was grateful when the twist finally came, as it had to, with wife No. 6. In a performance rendered even lovelier by its contrast with the brashness of the previous five, Anna Uzele makes a touching creation of Catherine Parr, who probably did not in real life develop a theory of retroactive regnal sisterhood. But here she does, arguing to her predecessors that history, which has merged them into a monolith defined by the one thing they had in common, must be rewritten to see them as individuals instead.

That “Six” puts just such a rewritten history onstage is a great thing for a pop musical to do. Let’s not quibble about its accuracy, or the way it drops its contest framework cold, just in time for the singalong finale. It’s not a treatise but a lark and a provocation — and a work of blatantly commercial theater. That means a fantastic physical production and unimprovable performances by a diverse cast whose singing is arena-ready but also characterful.

It also means a certain amount of bullying; those women onstage insisting you have fun are, after all, queens. They may even be queenlier now than they were in 2020; at times I thought they seemed over-primed by the time off.

But if the direction by Moss and Armitage comes just up to the edge of too much, then takes two more steps before turning around and winking, their choices are justified by the show’s insistence on finding an accessible, youthful way to talk about women, abuse and power. Call it #MeSix and be prepared: The confetti canon is aimed at you.

Additional Resources

A her-story of the six queens.

Catherine of Aragon

Remembered for… Her refusal to accept that her marriage was invalid; her faith; her dramatic speech to Henry when he had her brought to court to seek the annulment of their marriage.

Birth and death December 15, 1485 – January 7, 1536

Marriage One: to Arthur (Henry’s older brother), November 14, 1501 (aged 15) Two: to Henry VIII, June 11, 1509 (aged 23)

Children Mary, born February 18, 1516 (later Queen Mary I). Catherine also had two other children who died as infants, three stillborn children, and several miscarriages.

Interests Religion, sewing, dancing, a bit more religion.

Cause of death Probably a type of cancer.

Did you know? While Henry fought in France in 1513, Catherine was regent during the Battle of Flodden; when James IV of Scotland was killed in the battle, Catherine wanted to send his body to Henry as a present.

Queenspiration Beyoncé and Shakira

Anne Boleyn

Remembered for… Headlessness; bringing about England's break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.

Birth and death c. 1501 – May 19, 1536

Marriage January 25, 1533 (aged 31)

Children Elizabeth, born September 7, 1533 (later Queen Elizabeth I). Anne also had at least two miscarriages.

Interests Fashion, dancing, flirtation, collecting evangelical works.

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.

Cause of death Executed on Tower Green, London.

Remembered for… Headlessness; bringing about England's break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.

Did you know? Because she was fluent in French, Anne would have acted as a translator during the visit of Emperor Charles V to court in 1522.

Queenspiration Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne

Jane Seymour

Remembered for… Being the “only one he truly loved”; having two troublesome brothers who fought over the regency of the young Prince Edward after King Henry’s death.

Birth and death 1507 or 1508 – October 24, 1537

Marriage May 30, 1536 (aged 28 or 29)

Children Edward, born October 12, 1537 (later King Edward VI).

Interests Religious faith, obedience.

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn.

Cause of death Hemorrhage after the birth of Prince Edward; her child with Henry.

Did you know? While Anne Boleyn was still alive, Henry sent Jane a gift of money which she refused, apparently saying there “was no treasure in this world that she valued so much as her honour.”

Queenspiration Adele and Sia

Anna of Cleves

Remembered for… Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.

Also known as Anne of Cleves (the Anglicisation of her name) She is referred to as Anna here to distinguish between the two Annes & to honor the name she would have called herself in her own language.

Birth and death 1515 – July 16, 1557

Marriage January 6, 1540 (aged 24)

Children None.

Interests Staying alive.

Queen Links Anna visited Katherine Howard once she became queen and bowed down to her.

Cause of death Probably cancer.

Remembered for… Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.

Did you know? When Henry first met Anna of Cleves, he disguised himself, possibly imagining some sort of a romantic reaction. According to a witness, when Henry kissed Anna, she turned away coldly from the hideous stranger molesting her. The witness, Lord Russell, observed that he “never saw His Highness so marvelously astonished.”

Queenspiration Nicki Minaj and Rihanna

Katherine Howard

Remembered for… Being completely used (and abused) by those with power over her.

Birth and death c. 1523 – February 13, 1542

Marriage July 28, 1540 (aged 17)

Queen Links Lady-in-waiting to Anna of Cleves; cousin to Anne Boleyn.

Did you know? From her arrest on November 8, 1541 until her execution three months later, Katherine stayed under house arrest at Syon House; in late January of 1542, an act was passed in Parliament that rendered it treason for a woman to become the king’s wife without “plain declaration before of her unchaste life,” meaning Henry could have her killed.

Queenspiration Ariana Grande and Britney Spears

Catherine Parr

Remembered for… Surviving.

Birth and death c. 1512 – September 5, 1548

Marriage One: to Sir Edward Burgh, a courtier, 1529-1533 Two: to John Neville, Lord Latimer, 1534-1543 Three: to Henry VIII, July 12, 1543 Four: in secret to Thomas Seymour, May, 1547

Cause of death Childbirth.

Did you know? Catherine was the first woman in England to publish books under her own name and in English. Queenspiration Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé

Ariana Madix will return to the Ambassador Theatre this summer for another round of all that jazz.

Madix, the reality TV personality who has appeared in “Vanderpump Rules,” and “Love Island Games” will pick up where she left off as the main character in Broadway’s “ Chicago .” Madix initially made her Broadway debut in January as Roxie Hart. She played the main character for a 10-week run, which ended on April 7. It was a sold-out success and broke box-office records for four weeks. She is set to return for one month where she will reprise the role from August 1 through August 27.

Popular on Variety

The musical originally opened on Broadway on June 3, 1975, and it was revived on Nov. 14, 1996. Directed by Walter Bobbie, and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler “Chicago” has won six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and won a Grammy for Best Musical Cast Recording.

When Madix was first cast as Hart, the news came after Madix’s real life was in the headlines with the scandal labeled #Scandoval. This was because Madix caught her then-boyfriend, Tom Sandoval, cheating on her with “Vanderpump Rules” co-star and friend Raquel Leviss.

However, Madix is living out her dream. She moved to New York, N.Y., after graduating from Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Fla., to be on Broadway, Madix told Glamour Magazine .

Following the closing of “Phantom of the Opera” last year, “Chicago” is now the longest-running musical on Broadway. Full list of Broadway shows and where to buy tickets here!

Madonna’s Celebration Tour pulls record 1.6M fans into the groove at Rio’s Copacabana

More than a million music fans gathered at Brazil’s iconic Copacabana beach to prove their love to Madonna over the weekend.

The “Get into the Groove” and “Vogue” pop diva concluded her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a bang over the weekend, treating fans in Rio de Janeiro to a free beach concert on Saturday. “This really happened,” the singer reminisced in an Instagram video shared Sunday.

The Instagram clip shows an aerial view of attendees assembling on the sandy Brazilian strip, which stretches more than 2 miles along the coast. While some fans danced on the beach, others hosted house parties in nearby beachfront apartments and hotels, the Associated Press reported.

Madonna’s Celebration tour is a messy victory lap that needs more razzle-dazzle

Madonna brought her career-spanning Celebration tour to the Kia Forum for a night of hits, memories and grievances.

March 5, 2024

“This place is magic,” the 65-year-old singing icon said during her show, which also featured appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

An estimated 1.6 million people gathered for Madonna’s Celebration Tour finale, Brazilian outlet G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. The event was also broadcast on Brazilian network TV Globo. Even before a million-plus fans descended on Copacabana over the weekend, Madonna announced in late March that her send-off would be her “biggest gig yet.”

“The show will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour,” her website said.

Saturday’s concert broke Madge’s personal attendance record — 130,000 fans at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987 — by more than tenfold. Madonna also bested the record previously held by the Rolling Stones’ 2006 Copacabana concert , which drew 1.5 million people.

‘No Madonna fan’ should expect a Madonna show to start on time. So says Team Madonna

Madonna’s legal team submits a dismissal request in a class-action case about her concert tardiness, contending that a two-hour delay didn’t injure ticketholders.

April 5, 2024

” @Madonna makes history in Rio tonight marking the largest ever standalone concert for any artist, with over 1.6 million fans attending as she closes The Celebration Tour,” Live Nation announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour launched in October, months after she was hospitalized for a bacterial infection last June. The Grammy winner brought her headline-generating tour to Inglewood’s Kia Forum for several nights in March.

Times critic Mikael Wood wrote that the singer’s Celebration Tour “ was curiously short on joy. ”

“A pop concert is a theater of personality and craft, not one of plot or character development,” he added. “But a narrative this messy needed more razzle-dazzle.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Better than all the rest, 'Tina: The Tina Turner Musical' to stop in Columbus

Ari Groover performs as Tina Turner in the North American tour of “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

The 'Queen of Rock 'n' Roll' left the world’s stage last year, but her legacy lives on in “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

The national tour opens May 7 at the Ohio Theatre.

“What they taught us on Broadway, and what Tina herself said, is that this musical was her last labor of love,” tour co-star Ari Groover said.

“In this version of her story, you see the joy she tries to give, even while going through abuse, pain and struggles,” she said.

Groover, who played Tina on Broadway, recalled Turner’s advice to cast members: “To play yourself authentically and honestly is to play me.”

Made the Cut: From Cher to Ozzy Osbourne, see the 2024 list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

A feisty singer-songwriter who sold 180 million records and won 11 Grammys, Turner died last May at 83.

“Her passing hit the team hard, because she had a hand in the production and gave her blessing to it,” said music director Dani Lee Hutch, who conducts the 11-member orchestra.

What’s “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical's” focus?

Turner’s self-awareness helped define the musical, which focuses on her difficult childhood, turbulent relationships and career struggles.

“That comes through her music. She lived in an era when music wasn’t overproduced, so that makes it raw and real,” Hutch said.

Turner endured misogyny, racism and ageism − all depicted in the musical, suggested for adults because of violence and profanity.

“She found laughter in life because you have to laugh to keep from crying. That’s why so many people resonate with her story,” Groover said.

Upcoming: Broadway in Columbus announces its 2024-25 season, including 'Hamilton,' 'MJ the Musical'

Zurin Villanueva, who alternates with Groover as Tina, agreed.

“She changed her entire life with her mind... the most amazing thing,” Villanueva said.

How Tina Turner got her name

Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner overcame poverty, a divided family and a childhood picking cotton to become a singer.

“Her perseverance was a lifesaver,” Groover said.

Previously called “Little Ann,” she got her stage name from Ike Turner, who remolded her teenage persona after she joined his band in 1956 in St. Louis.

As Tina’s manager and husband, Ike guided the duo’s rise.

Performing from 1960 to 1976 as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, they propelled 20 songs onto Billboard Hot R&B charts. Among them: “A Fool in Love,” “Proud Mary,” “River Deep Mountain High” and “Shake a Tail Feather,” all in the show.

Turner connected, Hutch said, through her “incredible voice” and authenticity.

“Her voice had grit and an amazing range spanning octaves. She felt the music deeply,” she said.

How Turner survived

Behind the scenes, though, Tina suffered.

“She began to get out of that abusive relationship, first mentally, then trying to run away, then succeeding in fighting back and leaving,” Villanueva said.

Meanwhile, Tina fell in love with the band saxophonist, got pregnant with his son and struggled to balance motherhood and touring.

“Her 16 years with Ike complicated other family relationships and made it hard for her to become a success in her 40s while maintaining her family,” Groover said.

After suffering for years, Tina separated from Ike in 1976. They divorced in 1978. In her autobiography, Tina later revealed Ike’s physical abuse.

“Something a lot of people don’t see in Tina was her grace and forgiveness to herself,” Groover said.

Private sufferer, public entertainer

After dramatizing Tina's comeback achieving solo stardom in her mid-40s with her “Private Dancer” album, the musical culminates with the singer's record-breaking 1988 concert before 188,000 people in Rio de Janeiro.

“After surviving a tumultuous personal life, she gave her heart and soul to millions onstage... That’s where she felt most comfortable, connecting with people,” Groover said.

With disco, pop, blues, funk, R&B and rock among the genres Tina embraced, the musical’s range is impressive, Hutch said.

Rock 'n' Roll: Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band alive and well in 3-plus hours of thunderous hits

“It’s exciting to play so many different styles. ‘Tina’ walks you through her story but also the different eras she lived through,” she said.

What other hits are performed?

Among the show, other songs are performed that defined Tina's career, such as “I Want to Take You Higher,” “(Simply) The Best,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Their power is reinforced, Hutch said, by their strategic placement in the show.

“The songs help the story build, going from the personal to the public. The way the story is put together makes you really root for Tina,” she said.

Some scenes begin with Tina singing to other characters, but shift to her concert singing.

“It makes us think of her lyrics in a different way,” Hutch said.

How the Broadway musical fared

After becoming a still-running London hit in 2018, “Tina” reached Broadway in 2020 and received 12 Tony nominations, including best musical, choreography, lighting and costumes. It won one Tony for Adrienne Warren as the best musical actress.

In London, reviews were mixed-to-positive, with greatest praise for the performers and songs.

“Pretty much every note of nuance is lost in the razzle-dazzle rush... galloping past the biographical milestones of an extraordinary life only long enough to mark them and move on to what the audience has presumably come for: the music,” critic Leah Greenblatt wrote in “Entertainment Weekly.”

An inspiring life

The alternating co-stars approach their role somewhat differently.

“It’s not about impersonating Tina, but finding the Tina inside yourself,” Villanueva said.

Neither actress met Turner, but they find her inspiring.

“I relate to her love, her loyalty, keeping her word and being there for the long haul... We are the masters of our journey,” Villanueva said.

Groover, in turn, admires Turner’s resilient spirit.

“Tina never gave up... Her story is important for women who fear they’re aging out in male-dominated industries like music,” she said. “That was the saving grace of her life... a reminder to keep pushing.”

The Importance of Being Earnest

By Oscar Wilde

Booking and details

Lyttelton Theatre

National Theatre, South Bank, London SE1 9PX

Public booking opens at midday on Thursday 23 May

A Trivial Comedy for Serious People

Being sensible can be excessively boring. At least Jack thinks so.

While assuming the role of dutiful guardian in the country, he lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy takes on a similar facade.

Unfortunately, living a double life has its drawbacks, especially when it comes to love. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate.

Max Webster (Donmar’s Macbeth ; Life of Pi ) directs a joyful and flamboyant reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy. Olivier Award-winner Sharon D Clarke ( Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom ; Doctor Who ) is joined by Ncuti Gatwa ( Doctor Who ; Sex Education ) and Hugh Skinner ( W1A ; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ) in this hilarious story of identity, impersonation and romance.
