Star Tours - The Adventures Continue (Tokyo Disneyland)

star tours the adventures continue disneyland tokyo

In 1987, the original version of Star Tours opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The motion simulator ride based on the Star Wars franchise featured Captain Rex, a droid that attempted to fly guests to the planet Endor.

In 2011, Disney debuted an updated version of this ride: Star Tours – The Adventures Continue . The new ride uses advanced 3D technology, randomly chosen alternate scenes, and frequent updates with new characters and locations as new Star Wars films come out.

The new version also exists at other Disney Parks around the world: Disney’s Hollywood Studios , Disneyland Park , and Disneyland Paris .

Queue Details

  • A video screen displays advertisements from across the galaxy in the first queue room. One of these ads is for ILM: Interstellar Lightspeed Manufacturing . ILM is a nod to Industrial Light and Magic , a company formed by George Lucas to create the unique special effects for Star Wars . ILM has gone on to become a leader in the industry and is now owned by Disney. This hidden detail is exclusive to Star Tours Tokyo.

  • Captain Rex can still be found in the new version, this time labeled as HHG -RX. The droid is in the queue hitchhiking with two other droids, a tribute to the infamous H itch h iking g hosts of the Haunted Mansion.

  • The droid found during the boarding pre-show is Aly San San . She is inspired by Attack of the Clones ‘ waitress droid, WA-7 . In the US versions of the ride, this character is voiced by actress Allison Janney  which has a “glitch” to provide safety information in Spanish. In this version of the ride, the droid is voiced by a Japanese actress with her “glitch” being part of Janney’s English spiel. You may recognize Janney as the voice of Peach in Pixar’s Finding Nemo (2003) as well as Doofenshmirtz’s ex-wife Charlene in Disney’s Phineas and Ferb .

Ride Details

  • The ride doesn’t have an original score, but rather a compilation of music from the Star Wars films by John Williams . Composer  Richard Bellis  was in charge of arranging and orchestrating the melody including some original elements such as the infamous chime . Bellis played a similar role in Disneyland’s Indiana Jones And The Temple Of The Forbidden Eye as well as a number of original projects for Disney including The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter and Dinosaur .
  • One of the sequences takes riders to Crait , the mineral planet seen during  Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) . Crait was inspired by and filmed on Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flat . The portions used during the ride are likely to be completely CGI.
  • Another sequence takes riders to Hoth , the ice planet seen during  Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) . Hoth’s battle scenes were filmed on and near Norway’s Hardangerjøkulen (Hardanger Glacier) , although the ride footage appears to all be CGI.

Description And Comments

In Star Tours, you enter a futuristic space port and become a part of the Star Wars universe. You fly in a Starspeeder 1000 and encounter heroes Finn and Poe Dameron, as well as the villain, Kylo Ren. You’ll be visiting planets from the current generation of Star Wars movies, such as Jakku, Crait and Batuu. The big twist is that the all possible cosmic destinations are randomly combined into hundreds of different story variations, giving the attraction unprecedented reridability. Star Tours uses flight simulator technology to provide the thrills. You're not actually moving through any psychical sets. But the simulators bump, twist, and dive, all synced to what you see on screen. It's a smooth ride, but some may be made uncomfortable by all the motion.

Touring Tips

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue seems to be the least popular of the park's major attractions, so we don't see too many out-of-this-world wait times. If you wish to ride Star Tours, check the wait time near the end of the night.

How's It Different From the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Versions?

The ride is an exact copy of the Star Tours attractions found at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The queue is larger and more elaborate, which is cool. But if you've ridden the ride to death in the states it's not worth waiting in line unless you're a huge Star Tours fan.

Is it English Friendly?

Dialogue is in Japanese.

Excitement Rules the Galaxy with Launch of ‘Star Tours: The Adventures Continue’ at Tokyo Disneyland

The Force is with Tokyo Disneyland!

star tours the adventures continue disneyland tokyo

Earlier this month, the park debuted Star Tours: The Adventures Continue , a complete renovation of the popular attraction that opened at the park in 1989.

The innovative update to this virtual reality-based attraction features a new world full of famous (and infamous) Star Wars characters and settings in breathtaking 3D. What’s more, more than 50 possible story combinations are produced through the random selection of multiple scenarios – meaning guests will be able to experience a different storyline each time they ride, with unexpected thrills at every turn.

Whether it’s coming face to face with Darth Vader or visiting the sparkling planet of Coruscant, guests can expect an intergalactic adventure like no other.

But the attraction itself isn’t the only innovative aspect of this debut. The team took a unique approach to promoting Star Tours: The Adventures Continue , creating viral video segments that feature Darth Vader’s Imperial invasion of Japan including Sapporo, Nagoya, Yokohama and of course, Tokyo. If you haven’t seen these creative videos, you can check them out on the Tokyo Disney Resort YouTube Channel .

The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

Characters from the mandalorian, ahsoka, and andor are now part of the legendary disney attraction..

Cassian Andor, Ahsoka Tano, and the Mandalorian with Grogu on Star Tours.

Before Disney bought Star Wars , the two brands began their courtship with a ride . Star Tours opened in 1987 and has seen many new upgrades and additions over the years . This week, for its Season of the Force event , Disney gave the ride another refresh. And this time, for the first time, it’s with characters from Disney+.

Related Content

So, starting today, if you are at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, or Disneyland Paris, Star Tours now features characters from Ahsoka, Andor and The Mandalorian . But what’s new? How does it work? io9 was among a group of journalists Disney invited to an early preview of the new Star Tours at Disneyland in Anaheim, so we’ll explain.

How many new Star Tours locations are there?

Though you may have assumed otherwise, only one new, full planet has been added to Star Tours this time around: Seatos from Ahsoka. However, there are three different variations going into that. One featuring Ahsoka (with Rosario Dawson reprising the role), one featuring Cassian Andor (with Diego Luna reprising), and one featuring both the Mandalorian and Grogu.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

What can happen on the new Star Tours ?

So, you get on the ride and start to pull out of the spaceport. Here’s where, potentially, your first new change will be. In the past, riders would usually see the Millennium Falcon sitting there as the ship was stopped by Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, or a Probe Droid. And while that’s still more likely to happen than not, if you happen to see a new ship there, you know exactly where this particular ride will take you.

Yes, in some Star Tours rides not only is Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle in the first scene, you can see Ahsoka herself there in the frame. She’s talking to Stormtroopers and, when they discover the Rebel spy, Ahsoka turns on her lightsabers and battles off the troopers before jumping in the ship.

If you see that, you can impress your friends and tell them what’s going to happen next. After you visit one of many, many planets that were previously on the ride (I did it twice on Friday and both times it was podracing on Tatooine from Episode I ), you’ll then get one of the three new transmissions. However, if you got Ahsoka’s ship at the start, you are guaranteed to get Ahsoka in this moment. She’ll say “Hi” to C-3PO, and be excited to see her friend R2-D2 again, before asking to deliver a very important person—the Rebel spy. As she’s talking, we see Chopper and Huyang in the background, getting into shenanigans.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

What are the two other transmissions?

These transmissions is the part of this new Star Tours that will be the most random. If you don’t get Ahsoka, maybe you’ll get the Mandalorian and Grogu. As Mando (who does not sound like it’s Pedro Pascal but we’ve asked Disney for confirmation) talks about a dangerous mission and fight, Grogu is eating one of his frogs. He then spits it out and it floats toward your face in 3D. It’s very cute and funny and just as the one-eyed creature gets close enough to almost touch it, Grogu sucks him back in. “This is the way,” Mando says, and you’re off to the final part of your mission.

Note: unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Cassian’s transmission but, from what we were told, it’s very different tonally than the other two, on purpose. While Ahsoka’s is friendly and Mando’s is funny, Cassian’s is mysterious. He comes out in a hood, lurking in a shadow, then reveals himself to the audience and asks for help with the spy. The key was that each one feels completely unique.

What happens on Seatos?

No matter what transmission you get though, everything is the same after that. Star Tours is off to Seatos, the planet from the final episodes of Ahsoka where they showdown with Thrawn. You arrive in some kind of shadow, only to emerge from the clouds flying among the majestic Purrgil (aka Space Whales). Ahsoka hails you on the side monitor and asks for help with the two ships attacking her, which R2 is more than happy to do. You fly up and around the Purrgil, along their backs, weaving in and out of its fins, and at one point almost even getting sucked in and eaten. Finally, there’s a perfect moment, which R2 uses to land the perfect shot and save the day. Ashoka thanks you, has a special goodbye for her old pal R2, and it’s back home.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

Are the new additions to Star Tours good?

Yes and no. Yes, because anytime you can get to sit down and experience a new piece of Star Wars , especially on a ride that’s been around for almost 40 years, that’s a good thing. However, do I think Seatos as a planet is one of the better destinations in the ride? No. In fact, it may be one of my least favorites. It’s drastically lacking in drama compared to, say, Geonosis, Coruscant, or Naboo. But Ahsoka is great and it’s fun to follow a different ship around.

Oh, and the new transmissions (at least the ones we saw) were phenomenal. Much more detailed and eventful than the previous ones.

How long is the new ride happening?

“For a limited time” everyone who boards Star Tours will get the new planet of Seatos every time, as well as one of the new transmissions. Whether or not that’s just through the Season of the Force event or longer is unclear, and Disney wouldn’t commit to specifics. It might be a park to park decision. But, for at least a few weeks or months, if you go on Star Tours , you’ll get the new stuff.

Then, eventually, the three new transmissions and one new planet will be slotted into the ride’s randomizer. When that happens, it takes the number of possible combinations up to over 250.

Why Seatos over anything else?

In the last few years, thanks to Disney+, Star Wars has seen more new planets, characters, and creatures than ever. So why Seatos and the Purrgil? Well, Tom Fitzgerald, one of Star Tours ’ original Imagineers—who also worked on this one —said it was all about picking a planet that was different from all the others. Something unique. Maybe that’s colors or maybe, in this case, it’s a unique creature. So by choosing Seatos, not only do you get to see these massive, new, unique creatures, but those creatures allow the ride to do moves it’s never done before. That’s how we get the first barrel roll ever in Star Tours as well as a sequence he refers to as the “slalom ski run.”

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

How long did the new upgrade take?

Fitzgerald said he and his team first started working on these new additions sometime between 18 months and two years ago.

Could another ride get this treatment?

Since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Tours has been updated about every two or three years. This update is the first since 2019 though—so it makes you wonder, what’s next? And, will it even be Star Tours ?

When Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, Disney said that the Millennium Falcon ride, Smugglers Run , was designed in a similar fashion to Star Tours and that the actual visuals in the ride could be changed to take guests on new adventures. But now, that ride has been the same for five years. Could a change be coming? Unfortunately, no one from Imagineering or Lucasfilm would comment, confirm, or deny—but, fingers crossed.

The Ahsoka, Andor and Mandalorian additions to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue are now running at Disneyland, Hollywood Studios, and Disneyland Paris as part of the Season of the Force event. For more on that, check out this link.

Disney's Star Tours - The Adventures Continue

star tours the adventures continue disneyland tokyo

Disney's Star Tours - The Adventures Continue improves on the original attraction in every way—and sets a new standard for motion simulator rides. What had become a slightly tired trip to a Star Wars galaxy far, far away is now a giddy jaunt to... well, half the fun is you never know where in hyperspace the ride will whisk you.

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy, 10=Yikes): 4.5. Relatively mild motion simulator thrills. Those prone to motion sickness may experience discomfort (although closing your eyes should quell any queasiness). The ride also offers Star Wars -style action. It makes our list of Disneyland's most thrilling rides .
  • Location: Disneyland , Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World , Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland.
  • Height requirement: 40 inches

Disney Raises Its Own Bar

When it debuted at Disneyland in 1987, the original Star Tours was the first major motion simulator attraction at a theme park, and the newfangled virtual reality concept ushered in a new era for park attractions. If theme parks are about escaping from the everyday world, motion simulators offer an ideal means of escape. Using seats that move in sync with filmed action projected onto a screen, the destinations are only limited by the imagination of the attraction's designers. Star Tours was also a bold departure for Disney which, up until that point, had used its own content as the basis for its attractions.

Since the ride film made its debut, developers have added Omnimax screens (such as The Simpsons Ride ), roving motion base vehicles (such as Transformers: The Ride 3D ), and other features to enhance the you-are-there experience. The movie ride space cowboys at Walt Disney Imagineering, Lucasfilm, and Industrial Light & Magic (Lucasfilm's visual effects mavens), have upped their own ante with a retooled version of the attraction that launched in 2011.

The impetus for the re-imagined ride dates back to the late 1990s when Episode 1 of the Star Wars prequel trilogy was being filmed. According to Tom Fitzgerald, executive vice president and senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering , "George Lucas contacted us and said the pod racing scene in the movie would be perfect for Star Tours." Anyone who has seen the movie would agree; the largely point-of-view sequence, with the hover vehicles tearing through a desert course, seems tailor-made for a park ride. So what took so long? "We needed to raise the bar," says Fitzgerald. Thankfully, the bar has indeed been raised.

3-D Without the Gimmicks

The infrastructure of the attraction remains essentially unchanged. Guests still make their way through a mythology-packed "spaceport" en route to their Starspeeder 1000 boarding gate and an allegedly uneventful journey to some friendly planet. Star Wars stalwarts R2-D2 and C-3PO are on hand to help ready the vehicles (and entertain riders stuck in line). After some pre-flight safety instructions, guests enter the familiar Starspeeder cabins and buckle up for a bumpy ride.

Once the ride begins, however, it's clear that this is not the same Endor-bound Star Tours that lurched ad nauseam through the cosmos for 24 years. Speaking of clear, the super high-def clarity of the digitally projected film is remarkably crisper than the original ride. And by adding 3-D to the mix, the attraction offers a vivid sense of depth, while the dorky 3-D goggles don't noticeably dim the alluring brightness of the images.

Unlike the gotcha gimmickry of most 3-D park rides, the extra dimension of the spiffed-up Star Tours is more understated. With its easy availability at the local cineplex, the novelty of 3-D has long since worn off. Wisely, the Imagineers have seamlessly incorporated the effect in a largely unself-conscious and elegant way that helps bring Lucas' alternate-universe to life.

You Are There. But You Never Know Where.

The most compelling improvement over Star Tours 1.0 is the ride's random sequence generator. By slicing together many different destinations and transition scenes, Disney says that there are over 50 possible story combinations. No two rides, therefore, would likely be the same (unless uber-fans boarded Star Tours a lot ). That keeps the attraction fresh and makes it eminently re-rideable. It also makes other motion simulator attractions, with their fixed been-there, done-that plots, seem so 20th century.

Like the original Star Tours (and nearly every other motion simulator ride), what all versions of the attraction have in common is that things very quickly go horribly wrong. Rookie pilots R2-D2 and C-3PO are unexpectedly drafted into action, rebel spies are discovered lurking among the passengers, and the Starspeeders must periodically engage in evasive maneuvers and travel to distant planets to avoid certain calamity. Other destinations include the ice planet of Hoth, Naboo, and the ominous Death Star.

It's quite impressive to experience the attraction more than once and be treated to an entirely unique story arc each time. Different characters (which might include, among others, Boba Fett, Yoda, Princess Leia, and supreme baddie Darth Vader), different missions, different locations, and even different gags will have you marveling at the audacity of the ride. "It was a challenge to sync everything," says Spiegel, referring to the on-the-fly nature of the stitched-together film, the corresponding motion sequences, and the in-cabin effects. “We wanted to be able to take guests to many places in the Star Wars universe. And now we can."

Even More Places to Visit

Because it is screen-based, Disney has the ability to add sequences and make updates to the attraction, which it periodically does. For example, in late 2019, the parks introduced new scenes inspired by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , the latest installment in the movie franchise. Among the places added to the Starspeeders' itineraries was the ocean moon Kef Bir.

Since the introduction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge , the groundbreaking lands at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it has been a bit disconcerting to have Star Tours exist outside of the contained Black Spire Outpost, the trading port on the planet Batuu. It is especially strange at the Disney World park, where Star Tours is just a couple of blocks away from Galaxy’s Edge. Disney has explained the disconnect by saying that the Star Tours attractions pay homage to the movies and mythology while Galaxy’s Edge represents the “real” Star Wars lands.

It may be some time before we actually have the technology to fly off to faraway stars. Until then, the mighty impressive technology that fuels Star Tours - The Adventures Continue can virtually transport us, if only for a few minutes at a time, to places that were previously unthinkable.

Tokyo Disneyland – Star Tours: The Adventures Continue

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue

Tokyo Disneyland’s latest attraction is the heavily upgraded version of Star Tours , known as Star Tours: The Adventures Continue . This Spaceport brings guests at Tomorrowland on tours to exciting destinations – far, far away – in the Star Wars universe.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, at night

As the titles suggest, this is a Star Wars themed attraction. This new version of Star Tours is set between the two Star Wars trilogy, thus it is referred as “Episode 3.5” by some fans. The ride, with latest 3D projection and motion base technologies, brings guests on a high-octane journey through various iconic destinations, such as Hoth, Tatooine, Coruscant, Naboo and even the Death Star. What makes this attraction interesting is that the ride randomly picks destinations, such that every adventure has a slightly different experience. Notable characters from Star Wars, such as Darth Vader, Yoda and Princess Leia, can be met as well (via random pick). In all, 54 different combinations of the ride experience exist.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue / Fastpass Ticketing

Fastpasses for Star Tours at Tokyo Disneyland are not distributed anywhere near the attraction. To get them, you have to walk to the other side of Tomorrowland (past Space Mountain!) until you see this blue building. Frankly speaking I had no idea why it’s so far away – although it is possible that there is no space (as the Standby line would need to be setup around the show building) or it’ll block emergency exits

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue Fastpasses!

We picked Star Tours as our third Fastpass of the day. It didn’t run out as fast, so we were able to get the 7:50PM passes even when it’s almost 2PM.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, at night 2

Exclusive to Tokyo Disneyland is the Star Tours Concourse , where a majestic billboard displays corporate videos and adverts for many travel destinations.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue concourse

See the chain of signs dangling from the ceiling? That’s the Fastpass merge point.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue concourse 5

While this queue area isn’t exactly huge, the high allocation of capacity for Fastpass means that the Standby moves really, really slowly.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue concourse 7

That’s why the screen is here to entertain guests and immerse them into the ride’s story.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue concourse 3

It’s actually quite amusing – especially if you’ve watched Star Wars. And… if you are Star Wars fan, you’ll never want to leave.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue bay

After the merge, the line moves very briskly through several areas of the Spaceport.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue bay 2

Doesn’t this feel legitimate? Haha.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue bay 5

Even the little control room at the corner (which is easily missable when the queue moves quickly) has animatronics and effects.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue bay 6

StarSpeeder 1000. Also not a static prop! There are some smoke effects and C-3PO and R2-D2 animatronics add to the pre-show experience.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue cargo section

Beware of Hitchhiking Robots!

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue cargo section 2

The Cargo/Customs area has a very entertaining robot that scans luggage. Apart from an excellent effect simulating an X-Ray, there are humourous items seen here: Even a Wall-E.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue cargo section 3

The queue slowly ascends, and we have another robot (I guess immigration). Before this there is a window where silhouettes of other people and creatures can be seen.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, queue cargo section 6

Finally, we’re at the boarding area. It’s pretty large, and rather impressive in terms of queue management.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, loading bay

The entire hall is divided into six areas, one for each ride system. All of them work independently, so if one breaks down, the other five could still be used.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, loading bay 2

Cast Members here seem to have a very efficient technique to handle large crowds. I’ve seen the switchbacks being opened and closed on the fly, and people are effectively divided into different gates.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, loading bay 3

The lighting in the area occasionally changes. Overall, very pretty.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, loading bay 5

Star Tours uses 3D glasses that filters light wavelengths (Infitec, Dolby3D) which works perfectly well in a motion simulator environment. The 3D display is incredibly sharp and pretty much triumphs rides that uses polarising glasses, such as Transformers: The Ride (Singapore) .

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, loading bay 6

I couldn’t take pictures of the ride vehicle or ride experience. I would just say that Star Tours is one of the best 3D-cinema motion simulator rides I’ve ever experienced – surpassing Transformers: The Ride in Singapore (which isn’t really a motion simulator). Despite not moving around physical sets like Transformers, the visuals at Star Tours were more realistic.

The story, is of course, very polished and believable – the entire pre-show is structured to feel like guests are tourists going on a tour. Safety guidelines are presented in the most amusing way, in the style of in-flight safety videos (it even features Wookies).

The ride also takes advantage of the screens in ride vehicles – A LOT. Since it’s just visuals and not physical sets, the ride chooses around different scenes throughout the adventure (Something which I wonder, why Transformers: The Ride did not make full use of).

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, after the ride

Guests can become part of the ride too. Hidden cameras scattered around the vehicle allows faces to be captured and used in the ride. Cast members will select (at random or for some reason) a guest’s face to become the Rebel Spy character. I was chosen to be the Spy… Probably because I was taking A LOT of photos everywhere and the cast member noticed.

With all these features, Star Tours is an exhilarating attraction that motivates guests to return for a different adventure. I had to go on this ride three times.

I love your photos. I enjoy the queue more than the ride. Simply because i can easily take role as a passenger at the space terminal. However, the ride makes me headache and confuse. I try 3 times and it gives me same feeling. I have to sit for a while to be ok after riding. So I decide not to ride it again now. The 3D is amazing and the quality of definition is perfect. However it does not deliver the feeling that Storm Rider does.

54 combinations what! It’s awesome…love it coz it has the shortest waits during our past 2 visits lol. Also, characters came to interact with the crowd while waiting in line 🙂 very cool!

star tours the adventures continue disneyland tokyo

I brought my 3 year old daughter and 4 year old son on Star Tours. It was way too intense for them. Right off the bat we were being attacked. Then we jumped into hyperspace and crashed on a snowcapped mountain on Hoth, then fell into a snowy canyon and slid down. More crashing, being shot at, shooting. Very realistic with the motion simulator and video screen. My daughter was shaking and started to cry. My son was really upset.

I’m sure some small children can handle it. But really seemed suitable for 8 and up to me. There was no warning from signage or staff either.

Iconic Disney World Attraction Abandoned, Indefinitely Closed Off

in Walt Disney World

An iconic attraction at Walt Disney World Resort has been abandoned indefinitely, and we have updates to share.

Over the years, Walt Disney World Resort has had to make conscious decisions to close certain attractions or make significant updates to beloved areas. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which is set to open this summer, is an example of Disney electing to change by closing Splash Mountain permanently to make way for a new ride.

However, there are other attractions inside many Disney World parks that are either changed or, on some occasions, left behind and abandoned for many years.

A log flume ride under testing, featuring empty log-shaped boats on a water track, with a sign stating "sorry, friends, we are ride testing only. opening this summer!" in a lush, green park setting.

However, not all changes are met with enthusiasm, and the disappearance of the Jedi Training Academy —a beloved interactive experience—has left a notable gap in the Disney park’s offerings.

Introduced in the late 2000s, the Jedi Training Academy was a dream come true for young Star Wars fans. Dressed in Jedi robes and wielding lightsabers, children had the opportunity to learn the ways of the Force and engage in staged combat against iconic villains like Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.

This interactive show was not just about entertainment; it was an exercise in courage, resilience, and the triumph of good over evil. The Academy took place right in front of the Star Tours attraction, adding to the thematic continuity of the park’s Star Wars section, of course not to be confused with Galaxy’s Edge.

A large gray robot towers above the trees next to Star Tours.

In 2015, the show evolved into Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, enhancing its narrative depth and engaging even more with its young audience. Despite its capacity limitations—only a select group of children could participate in each session—the show remained a popular staple, drawing significant crowds and creating unforgettable memories.

However, in 2020, the global challenges forced many theme parks, including Walt Disney World Resort, to reevaluate their offerings. The Jedi Training Academy was temporarily closed, and unlike many other attractions, it has not reopened. According to the planDisney website, there are currently no plans for its return. The site of the Academy, adjacent to Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, remains vacant, sparking curiosity about future uses for this prime thematic real estate.

As you can see in the photo below, the attraction remains closed off to Disney World guests. Though there are small circumstances when a Disney photographer might be spotted taking a picture for Disney PhotoPass , the area largely remains abandoned.

Despite the void left by the Jedi Training Academy, Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to expand its Star Wars -themed attractions, further enhancing the immersive experience for fans. Star Tours: The Adventures Continue has been thrilling guests since its update in 2011, offering a dynamic 3D spaceflight simulation that incorporates characters and settings from the latest films in the franchise.

More recent additions have raised the bar for thematic immersion. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, an expansive section of Hollywood Studios, opened in 2019 and brought to life the bustling outpost of Batuu. Here, visitors can engage with characters, navigate through a detailed alien landscape, and experience two of the most technologically advanced attractions in theme park history: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

The former is a massive, multi-faceted adventure that puts guests in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order, while the latter offers a chance to pilot the iconic Millennium Falcon in a thrilling interactive experience.

The sun sets over the Millennium Falcon at Hollywood Studios' Galaxy's Edge

The park’s dedication to Star Wars doesn’t stop with rides and character meet-and-greets. Throughout Galaxy’s Edge, guests can customize their own droids and lightsabers, sample galactic cuisine, and even encounter roaming characters like Rey, Chewbacca, and members of the First Order. Each element is designed to provide an authentic Star Wars experience, making guests feel as though they are part of the expansive universe George Lucas created.

Star Wars Takeover: ‘Season of the Force’ Returns to Disneyland Resort

S outhern California’s Disneyland Resort has just released fresh details about the offerings guests can expect to see during the highly anticipated Season of the Force limited-time event, coming April 5 through June 2, 2024. The celebration of all things Star Wars universe will feature new experiences, including attraction overlays, nighttime spectaculars , character encounters, and themed food, beverages and merchandise.

All-New Experiences

This year, guests can look forward to the never-before-seen park productions and experiences, like the new nighttime spectacular “Fire of the Rising Moons” at  Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge . On select nights, starting April 5, this unique spectacle will showcase Disneyland’s stunning fireworks display from a very different vantage point, presented alongside iconic musical selections from legendary composer John Williams’ Star Wars film scores.

Also starting April 5, the epic Tomorrowland attraction, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue , will introduce new elements inspired by popular Disney+ series, such as “Ahsoka,” “Andor,” and “The Mandalorian.” It was recently revealed that the planet Seatos will be Star Tours’ newest destination, but Star Speeder passengers might also encounter urgent transmissions from newly introduced characters like, Ahsoka Tano, Cassian Andor, and Din Djarin and Grogu.

Also new this year from Disney PhotoPass service, prospective bounty hunters can come to the outer-rim planet of Batuu at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and pose with a Magic Shot holopuck, joining the likes of Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and his faithful foundling, Grogu. Other, returning Star Wars  Magic Shots and themed Disney PhotoPass Lenses will also be available to guests who purchase the Disney Genie+ service, giving them additional opportunities to immerse themselves in a galaxy far, far away.

More Limited-Time Delights

Regardless of whether you consider yourself a First Order loyalist or a rebel, a devotee of the dark side or the light, everyone can agree that Star Wars-themed attractions overlays are a highlight of the Season of the Force.

The fan-favorite overlay of the high-speed coaster Space Mountain, known as Hyperspace Mountain, will return to Tomorrowland for a limited time only, maintaining its residency through June 2. Guests will once again be able to board their rocket-cars and race through the cosmos, this time dodging laser blasts from some pretty terrifying TIE fighters and even soaring past a Star Destroyer along the way.

During the Season of the Force, be on the lookout for the many limited-time food and beverage offerings, brand-new, limited-edition merchandise and more. Star Wars-themed specialty treats, snacks and sips are sure to be everywhere you turn, including the Star Wars sugar cookie. We’ll know more soon, as the full menu will be rolled out once the Disney Eats: Season of the Force Foodie Guide is released in the coming weeks.

Other new releases include a never-before-seen collection of Star Tours – The Adventures Continue merchandise, which is making its way to both the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. You can find it at Tomorrowland’s Star Trader retail outlet in Disneyland park or the Star Wars Trading Post, located in Downtown Disney District.

Select retail items will also become available online at DisneyStore.com later in the year, but, if you want to choose your galactic gear from among the full selection, you’d better come to the parks in person!

Rare Baby Addax is Mother’s Day Gift at Disney

Scott Terrell

by Scott Terrell , DVM, DACVP, Director of Animal & Science Operations, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts

At Disney, every animal birth is important but there’s something extra special about an odds-defying, critically endangered baby addax we welcomed just in time for Mother’s Day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Two–month-old Julien is the newest member of our addax herd. These animals face possible extinction with less than 100 left in the wild and just over 180 in managed care across all organizations accredited by the Associations of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Julien the Baby Addax at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

A Baby Calf, Just in Time for Mother’s Day

Julien stands just over an adorable two feet tall with a great head of hair and is as cute as can be. He is welcomed by his mom Juniper and the rest of the herd over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and he is the first male calf born at the resort. An ode to his mom and dad, Julien’s name is a combination of both Juniper and Allen, who are all a part of the larger herd. Actually, we at Walt Disney World  are one of just 21 AZA accredited institutions who have addax in our care, and what better place to be able to see them than on the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), we have collaborated with renowned experts to help increase populations of endangered and threatened species. Following AZA Species Survival Plans (SSP), we have welcomed the births of a variety of animals just in the last year. This birth is just one example of many that exemplifies the success of our continued work to breed at risk animals.

Julien the Baby Addax at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

A Massive Win for Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment

Julien’s birth is an incredible win for the population of this species and for our team of veterinarians and animal keepers who are over the moon to welcome another addax as they are so critical in the wild. This birth is just one of many examples that testifies to the level of care our animals receive.

The critically endangered addax is a species of antelope known for their curly horns that calves are actually born with. This species of antelope is so rare, one of the few places in the entire world where they can be spotted outside of the Saharan desert in Africa is at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Thank You to All of The Moms

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, including first time mom Juniper, who’s growing closer and closer to baby Julien day by day! And we can’t forget about those who care for Juniper, caring for her since her own birth here at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge all the way through her first pregnancy and now into motherhood.

This birth continues to remind us of the power of protecting our world and those who need our help like the addax and other endangered and threatened species. Visit DisneyAnimals.com to learn how you can help all animals alike, especially those facing near extinction.

Soon, mom and baby will be out on the savanna and if you’d like to visit the herd, be sure to head over to Sunset Savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!
