Everybody's dressed so well in this one. It's winter on the Enterprise.

It's very funny that the conventional wisdom is that Shatner can't act. He can. He just acts in a way that makes boring people feel embarrassed. Good.

The one that takes place in San Francisco.

The best Star Trek movie, even Shatner is genuinely moving at the end of this one. I'd like to make special acknowledgment of the amazing original score by James Horner and how beautiful the special effects look, especially during the thrilling climax where the Enterprise and Reliant battle in the nebula. Ricardo Montalbán is so sick as Khan, A+ ham acting, riffing on Moby Dick "He tasks me! I'll chase him round the moons of Nibia and round perdition's flames" and generally displaying a masterclass in swag. The Seti Alpha 5 earwig scene scared the shit out of me when I was kid. Wonderful film.

Felt like I was visiting an old friend! The humor, banter and squabbles amongst the gang on Star Trek was in full swing and filled me with much delight!

Khan's (Ricardo Montalban) breasteses were to say the very least way too distracting!

Capt Kirk was to Khan what Moby Dick was to Captain Ahab!

The SPOCKtaneous heroic actions taken by Mr. Spock gave me heart palpitations! The speed of which rivaled Enterprises Warp 8!

I recall the 1st time I saw the grand finale I was quite upset and thought to myself NO! NO! NO! They can't do that!

Soon the they can't do that turned into Yes they can do that and it left my eyeball's drowning in an ocean of tears!

A tale of performance, illusions, veils, trickery. Just as in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible , the opening of Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek installment is a magic trick on the audience but serious business for our characters; an act designed for confidence, productivity, and success in the great unknown. Captain Kirk enters into the scene shot against creamy rays of light, doors opening as gateways. He's a film director in the process of evaluation, watching and searching for opportunity. A great performance is more than a highlight in Star Trek, it becomes the seed of greatness, a realm of shows and simulations translating into genuine progress. KHAAANNNN! -Kirk

The film that everyone wanted Star Trek: The Motion Picture to be. Even though the first film was met mostly with disappointment by critics and fans it still managed to pull in just enough money to warrant a sequel. A sequel with a considerable smaller budget mind you, but a sequel none the less. This, along with a few other elements that should have effected the project negatively, inadvertently created not only the best possible Star Trek film for the time, but possibly the best Star Trek film ever.

This remains easily the best film in the franchise, and arguably the only one that's great in its own right rather than "great for a Star Trek movie." And even then, I'm not sure how well it would play to a Trek newbie, since so much of its power and themes come from Kirk and Spock being older, and the ways that time has changed them both. Middle age is a nightmare for Kirk. His body is betraying him (the dreaded reading glasses), and he takes no pleasure in the rank of an admiral if a starship doesn't come with it. (His itchiness to return to action was one of the smarter things that Star Trek: The Motion Picture did.)…

It is the 23rd century. The Federation Starship U.S.S. Enterprise is on routine training maneuvers and Admiral James T. Sinopsis [ ]

En 2285 el Almirante James T. Kirk está a cargo de la Academia de la Flota Estelar , entrenando a los nuevos cadetes. Entre ellos está Saavik , una promisoria joven vulcana protegida de Spock , que acaba de fallar la prueba Kobayashi Maru -un escenario imposible de superar-. Un sólo cadete superó esa prueba, el propio Kirk. Lo que ella no sabe es que todo oficial debe enfrentarse alguna vez a una prueba insuperable.

En la estación espacial Regula I , la Dra. Carol Marcus -una ex-amante de Kirk- y su hijo David , completan la simulación del proyecto Génesis , destinado a generar vida donde existe materia inerte. Pero que también podría utilizarse como un arma de destrucción masiva.

Por órdenes del alto mando de la Flota -pese a las recomendaciones de la Dra. Marcus- el USS Reliant comandado por el Cap. Clark Terrell y Pavel Chekov como tripulante, busca un planeta sin vida para realizar las pruebas de campo del proyecto Génesis. El candidato es Ceti Alpha VI .

El Reliant descubre que Ceti Alpha VI no está deshabitado... demasiado tarde. El bienestar de la mayoría supera al bienestar de la minoría...o al de uno solo.

El fracaso en taquilla de ' Star Trek, la película ' ('Star Trek, the motion picture', Robert Wise, 1979) no auguraba un buen futuro para la pretendida franquicia cinematográfica que Paramount tenía la firme idea de continuar construyendo. Haciendo parcialmente responsable de la debacle a un Gene Roddenberry que quedaba relegado a la testimonial categoría de Consultor Ejecutivo, la productora rechazaba de pleno el argumento que éste ya había trazado para la secuela y contrataba a Harve Bennet , un hombre de la casa, para que, literalmente, " hiciera una película mejor que la primera por menos de 45 millones de dólares ".

Bennet, que nunca había visto nada de 'Star Trek' salvo la "aburrida" primera parte, revisó la serie por completo y, con la ayuda de Jack B.Sowars , concretó un guión que rescataba a Khan, uno de los villanos más míticos del universo trekkie. Pero conforme se acercaba la fecha del comienzo del rodaje, diversas injerencias comenzaron a alterar el libreto, algo que afectaba directamente en la fase de pre-producción al departamento de diseño impidiéndole avanzar en un trabajo imprescindible para comenzar a filmar . Fue entonces cuando apareció Nicholas Meyer .

El guionista y cineasta, del que ya hablamos largo y tendido en la crítica de ' Los pasajeros del tiempo ' ('Time after time', 1979), vendría a solucionar el entuerto con la perspectiva que le otorgaba el tampoco conocer nada de 'Star Trek', aproximándose a la corrección y elaboración del guión final mediante una simple idea: tomar todo aquello que funcionaba de los borradores anteriores y utilizarlo como base para el definitivo . En sus palabras:

La mayor contribución que traje a 'Star Trek' fue una sana falta de respeto...'Star Trek' era una alegoría humana en un formato espacial. Esta característica era tanto su mayor virtud como, a la postre, su debilidad. Trate mediante la irreverencia de hacer a los personajes más humanos y menos acartonados. No es que insistiera en que vierámos al Capitán Kirk ir al baño pero, ¿tenía que estar 'Star Trek' tan santificada?

Tan clara idea se aprecia a lo largo de una cinta cuyo arranque ya va encaminado a humanizar a sus protagonistas: tras una escena inicial que responde a la voluntad de Meyer de que, de alguna manera, los trekkies vayan aceptando que Spock muere al final de la cinta —única razón por la que Leonard Nimoy aceptó intervenir—, las primeras secuencias del filme van alternando el descubrimiento del destino real que Khan sufría tras su aparición en ' Space seed ' por parte de una nave de la federación en la que viaja Chejov, con la aproximación a la componente más "realista" del personaje del Capitán Kirk que se hará en la saga junto a lo que veremos en ' Star Trek VI, aquel país desconocido ' ('Star Trek VI: the undiscovered country, Nicholas Meyer, 1991).

Ahora bien, el hecho de que Meyer intente rebajar el pétreo carácter de los personajes, no implica que las actuaciones del elenco, con William Shatner a la cabeza, se hagan eco del esfuerzo del cineasta. Tanto es así que, quitando de nuevo de la ecuación a Leonard Nimoy, la teatralidad que acusan la mayor parte de las interpretaciones es aquí aún más exagerada que en la anterior película , algo que refuerza, no cabe duda, la sobreactuada participación de Ricardo Montalbán repitiendo su papel de Khan, un producto de la ingeniería genética del siglo XX (sic) que había llegado a dominar a gran parte de la población humana antes de terminar en una nave espacial a la deriva que sería encontrada por la Enterprise.

La búsqueda de venganza de Khan de una parte, un experimento de terraformación llamado Génesis de otra, y la inclusión de una tal Dra.Marcus y su hijo David —que resulta ser vástago de Kirk— son los tres ejes sobre los que va orbitando la acción de una cinta que, con la clara pretensión de equilibrar la vocación fantástica de la que dimana 'Star Trek' con la más cercana que intenta imprimirle Meyer , encuentra sus mejores momentos en aquellas secuencias en las que la primera discurre a placer y que el cineasta resuelve con acertada precisión como puede observarse, por ejemplo, en el enfrentamiento en la Mutara Nebula.

Acompasado por la partitura de James Horner , de desigual desarrollo y gran tema principal —que, no obstante, no está a la altura del magistral motivo que Goldsmith compusiera para la primera parte—, el metraje de 'Star Trek II: la ira de Khan' resulta un ejercicio de irregularidad a resultas del tira y afloja que el guión intenta plantear entre ambas vertientes del relato ; aunque no es menos cierto que tanto la emotiva escena entre Kirk y Spock, como la despedida que le hace al personaje la tripulación de la nave y el esperanzador cierre para con el vulcaniano que supone ese gran continuará final, redimen en parte un filme cuya calidad aún está muy por encima de los abismos a los que descenderá la saga galáctica.
