Rigelian (vulcanoid)

The Rigelians are a vulcanoid species inhabiting Rigel V. They are the namesake species of the Rigelian Assembly - however, they are not technically the first Rigelians to exist, nor are they the “face” of the Rigelian Assembly, despite their being a founding member.

Rigel V is home to just over 13 billion Rigelian people, and is capital of the Rigelian Assembly.

The Rigelians were once known as the V'gelnians , and were a splinter civilization, separate from the Vulcans and Romulans . Their history stretches back generations. Around 500 AD, a V'gelnian fleet approached Rigel V , it's commanding officer expressing high hopes that he and his people could conquer the planet, of which was home to the Kalar , and rule over it.

However, the invasion did not go according to plan, as the Kalar were armed due to previous efforts by Orions , and fought back against the expansionist empire. The two factions fought for a century, but the V'gelnians succeeded in claiming the southern continent, of which they named Han-shir. Negotiating new trade deals with the Orions, the V'gelnians spent the following decades forcefully removing the Kalar from their planet and relocating them to what would eventually be known as Rigel VII .

Throughout the next few generations, the vulcanoids would struggle with their own identity as a people, alternating between being known as V’gelnian, or the Zami . Ultimately however, they would abandon both names, and call their star system "Rigel" - thus becoming the Rigelian people.

In the early 10th century, the Rigelians had conquered the native Rigel III race known as the Chelon , forcing them to conform to Rigelian way of life, and effectively branding them under the Rigelian moniker.

By the 11th century, Rigelian civilization was at its height, represented by the city of Ancient Grace, which had great many-storied buildings with huge white columns and porticos standing upon its hills. But the Rigelians of this time were described as being distrustful, possessive, and highly competitive. The numerologists warned the Rigelian race to change their ways.

Subsequently, a plague spread through the population and decimated their number, leaving the cities in ruins while the native plant life flourished. After the plague had run its course, the survivors formed a new society that was more rural and decentralized, with new family units that possessed many members, to prevent them from being so decimated again. In addition, their culture shifted to living in the present, rather than focusing on the future or the past. Rigelian society became less inclined to violence as they further adapted to their homeworld.

This shift to a near-agrarian lifestyle meant that the Rigelian people remained poor compared to other worlds, though their forests gave them some biological and medical products which they sold.

The Rigelians would begin the first steps towards the Rigelian Assembly when the Jelna , newly space-faring, initiated first contact with the Rigelians. The two would negotiate trade deals, subsequently boosting the economy of the two Rigelian cultures as they formed the Rigelian Trade Commission , and the Jelna would adopt the Rigelian name.

In the mid-23rd century, doctors on Rigel V developed an experimental drug, a stimulant that increased production and replacement of blood in Rigelian test subjects, though it strained the spleen and liver. A Starfleet doctor successfully utilized this drug on a Vulcan crewmember in 2268.

In 2293, a Rigelian trade delegation representing the Heart Clan were involved in negotiations with the Federation on Earth, due to them being suspected of being involved in illegal activity such as prostitution and animal skin trading. This round of discussions took three weeks before the members of the clan were collected by a Starfleet vessel and escorted back to Rigel V. However, during this time, Rigelian Ambassador Denker was assassinated by criminal elements and the truth of the event was revealed, through a mind meld with Teska, who served as a witness.

This led to the revelation that there was a wide spread criminal element actively engaged in many criminal acts, the worst being child slavery on Rigel V. As a result the Federation council held a discussion and a vote that resulted in the Rigelians being expelled from the Federation . This resulted in a series of reforms in order for the Rigelian government to comply with the Federations laws. Once they had managed to make the changes needed and were able to prove that they were complying with all Federations laws they were allowed to apply to be readmitted to the United Federation of Planets.

The Rigelians don't have many governmental bodies, but instead make use of local prefects. The legal system is based around a Citizen's Court, an inquest where a panel of twenty six men and twenty six women are entitled to ask questions and serve essentially as prosecutors.

Description

The vulcanoid Rigelians are indistinguishable from their Vulcan and Romulan counterparts, as they are a splinter society from the two. To avoid confusion for others, officers may shave their heads or grow facial hair. [1]

Primitive equipment may be unable to determine a Rigelian from a Vulcan, as the two share almost identical physiologies. However, certain medications and treatments cannot automatically be assumed to work on both races, likely attributed to their evolution on Vulcan and Rigel V respectively. They have the same physical features, copper-based blood, and similar levels of strength. Rigelians, like Vulcans, are also susceptible to Tuvan syndrome. Vulcanoid Rigelians are also capable of mind-melding with others. [2]

The Rigelians are a charismatic bunch. They do not repress their emotions, and over time, their own society developed a peaceful lifestyle. They enjoy the outdoors, discouraging advanced technology and weapons for many centuries just prior to their introduction to the United Federation of Planets.

They also believe in the importance of exercise of the entire body for optimum health. A central part of their “exercise” may be regular sexual activity, which they believed reduced their destructive urges, resulting in their people being happier and healing faster. Therefore, they typically added sex to therapy to help the healing process and consider it unnatural to go without. Sex also helps them grow their clans and create new ones.

Rigelian society was arranged into clans. Clans were families consisting of a large number of individuals, though when a clan grew too large to sustain, it typically split into two separate clans. Rigelians also once practiced group marriages – centuries ago, a woman could possess multiple husbands, even as many as sixteen.

However, due to their large families and high birth-rates, Rigelian communities produced more children than they were capable of supporting. To lower numbers and prevent inbreeding, they sold children to other clans, which typically resulted in them marrying adults. Lone and clan-less children were in danger of being kidnapped and sold. Laws were eventually put into place limiting the amounts of unions between couples, restricting a Rigelian to wedding just two partners - though today, having more than one partner is rare.

A superstitious people, numerology plays an important part in Rigelian culture, with many number-based rules and guidelines enshrined in the Doctrine of Lollo. These rules determined the structure of government, number of spouses and children in each clan, practices involving food, specified colors and styles of dress, and various omens of ill fortune. Rigelians swore to truth on the primary numbers or wished good tidings by informing another that they had good combinations. Numerologists were an important class in Rigelian society, and even used their techniques to investigate crimes.

Unlike their vulcanoid kin, the Rigelians do not repress their emotions, lack the discipline common to both Romulans and Vulcans, and aren't afraid to look foolish, making them somewhat similar to Humans . Rigelian children do not undergo the deep studying that Vulcan children faced and even made physical displays of affection to their parents. In fact, the Rigelians are noted to be culturally more similar to the Romulans, but they are not as warlike and lack the restrictive aspects of that society.

Where Vulcans controlled their violent urges by suppressing emotion and Romulans surrendered to them, the Rigelians instead expended their energies with physical exertion. When a Rigelian was upset, they typically either fought or engaged in sexual encounters. This leads them to experience the grief frenzy, such as when mourning the death of loved one, in which they fight another until the frenzy burns out the grief. It is possible to hire another to battle for this purpose. [3]

Rigelian commerce is regulated by the Rigelian Trade Commission.

History [ ]

Chelarian mythology told that the race was placed on Rigel III eons ago by the gods to serve as their emissaries. By the 22nd century , modern Chelon no longer believed those legends, but Federation exobiologists once thought they recorded the seeding of Rigel III by some ancient race. However, the fact that the Chelon exhibited close genetic ancestry with other lifeforms on their homeworld cast doubt on the theory.

Nevertheless, early Chelon civilizations took their role as divine emissaries seriously. The Chelarians quickly established a system of communications between their communities. This system encouraged trade and prevented war. In time, the Chelon boasted a sophisticated network of interdependent communities, creating large states without developing the imperialistic mindset common to most other cultures.

Consequently, Rigel III was ripe for the picking by the various Orion empires that arose in the region millennia ago. Despite their broadmindedness, the Chelarians proved unruly subjects, launching several rebellions against Orion rule. Eventually, the Orions abandoned Rigel III (for reasons uncertain to historians) and left the planet to its native inhabitants. ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )

Official first contact between the United Earth and the various Rigelian peoples came in the early 2150s , though some human freighters had visited the system previously. Contact and trade between Earth and worlds of Beta Rigel grew quickly. By 2155 , the Rigelians were considering membership in the Coalition of Planets , though they ultimately remained neutral during the Earth-Romulan War . After the war, however, the nascent United Federation of Planets again made overtures to the Chelon, Jelna and other Rigelian species, and the United Rigel Worlds and Colonies became Federation members in 2164 . Culture [ ]

Excerpt from Sky Pirates of Orion and Maliszewski's Guide to Rigel , 2270 edition :

The experience of the Awakening (described below) profoundly influences Chelarian culture. Most outsiders cannot understand why Chelarians regard their non-sentient Chelarians young as little more than animals. This attitude contrasts with the loving concern shown to those young who survive to awaken. Chelarians regard sentience as a great reward and, like all rewards, one that requires effort to achieve. To take it for granted is to devalue it. Awakening is more than traumatic for some Chelarians. For a small number of them, it unlocks a mild form of empathic ability – and insanity. The brain structures that impart psionic abilities also stimulate phobias and obsessions. Empathic Chelarians are nevertheless the objects of great admiration. This admiration stems from an ancient belief that equated madness with the “touch of the gods.” Although few Chelarians hold to the old beliefs, superstitions such as this on continue to exert an influence on them. Empathic Chelarians are trained to harness their abilities for the good of the community. Chelarians encourage those with psionics to choose the vocations of diplomat or mediator, believing them the best uses of their unique talents. Chelarians who achieve a high degree of psionic mastery are granted the right to wear ceremonial armor made from polished black levneh metal. The armor has no martial value any longer, but signifies the Chelarian as a “warrior for peace.” Non-Chelarians sometimes mistake the respect accorded to the empaths as evidence of a caste system on Rigel III. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Chelarians’ subjugation by the Orions has made them extraordinarily egalitarian. Everything from their planetary government to their family structures is fluid and open. Indeed, Chelarians recoil from arbitrary discipline and hierarchies, making them seem insubordinate, even surly, to officious Starfleet personnel. At the same time, Chelarians are devoted to logical behavior and the common good. These twin culrural principles prevent the loose structure of Rigel III’s government from becoming a true anarchy – even if it already seems so to offworlders!

Physiology and Psychology [ ]

Chelons were tall, green anthropoids that resembled tortoises, with binocular vision and large beak-like mouths. They descended from a race of saber-toothed turtles who evolved to walk upright. They averaged in height from about 1.75 meters to 2 meters. They only had one sex and reproduced by laying eggs. Chelons performed male or female gender roles at different points in their lives. Many Chelons often took a permanent gender role, however traditionalists in their society did not. ( The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture ; ENT novel : Rise of the Federation : Tower of Babel )

The Chelon were amphibians that spent the first three years of their lives as entirely aquatic lifeforms. Because the oxygen dissolved in water was insufficient to support higher brain functions, Chelarian young were not accorded sentient status until their lungs were strong enough to breathe air. From the time a Chelarians took their first breath of air, their brains developed at a rapid rate, a process resulting in the “ Awakening .” The Awakening was a traumatic event, as young Chelons for the first time looked on their surroundings in a coherent, logical manner and recognized themselves as distinct from them. ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )

Though they lacked agility, Chelons were a strong, hardy race. They were highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation , with a lesser resistance to other types of radiation . As an aquatic species that dwelt in swamps, Chelarians were skilled swimmers. They preferred a warm, humid climate and often found other worlds uncomfortable. Some members of the species retained the large, hardened shells of their genetic ancestors, while others did not; these Chelons often wore ceremonial armor that simulated a shell. ( Decipher : Worlds ; STA : Beta Quadrant Sourcebook ; ENT novel : Rise of the Federation : Tower of Babel )

A Chelarian's fangs gave them a powerful biting weapon. Chelons, during times of stress or combat, emitted a deadly contact toxin through their skin, which could be transmitted via a claw strike. ( Decipher : Worlds ; Star Trek: Destiny novel : Mere Mortals )

The psionic abilities some Chelons possessed often came with a cost, as empathically-gifted Chelarians were prone to a variety of mental and emotional issues, including fanaticism, hypochondria, obsessive-compulsive disorder, mania, phobias, or other conditions. ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )

Egg-laying Chelarians sometimes grew so large as to require attendants who would bring them food and otherwise cared for them; these attendants were often the ones with true power in Chelon society. ( The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture ; STA : Continuing Mission )

Although logical and dedicated to the common good, Chelons did not appear as cold and calculating as species like the Vulcans. In fact, Chelons could be quite charming, if one could overlook their fierce appearance. Their almost innate open-mindedness and ability to see differing perspectives put others at ease. It also helped to smooth ruffled feathers when their equally innate egalitarianism caused them to question the orders of a superior.

Not surprisingly, the Chelarians were renowned as a thoughtful, deliberative people, though also curious and bold. Their skills in diplomacy and mediation were exceptional, making them important members of the Diplomatic Service from their earliest days as Federation members. Chelons excelled at other forms of negotiation as well, and more than a few corporations and businesses employed them as trade delegates when opening relations with a new world or colony. ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )

Noted Individuals [ ]

Since joining the Federation, many Chelon became revered as great diplomats, including:

  • Kishkik Sajithen , a former Director of the Rigelian Trade Commission , who served as the Beta Rigel system's first representative on the Federation Council . ( ENT novel : Rise of the Federation : Tower of Babel )
  • Jetanian , a Federation ambassador highly involved in the affairs of the Taurus Reach during the 2260s , and one of the founders of Nimbus III , the unsuccessful "Planet of Galactic Peace". ( Star Trek: Vanguard )
  • Yoom Veethos , Federation Councillor during the 2260s and 2270s . As an ambassador , Veethos successfully negotiated a peace treaty between warring religious factions on Elis V ; for his efforts, Veethos was awarded the Federation Medal of Honor . ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )

Other Chelarians served in Starfleet, including:

  • Captain Oox Haaden of the USS Bondar , the first Chelon to command a Starfleet vessel. His record of success in a number of first contact missions overcame a reputation for rebelliousness. In 2270 , Haaden led the Bondar on survey mission in the unexplored Vedria sector . ( LUG : Sky Pirates of Orion ; Untaken Treks )
  • Commander Latanun , first officer of the USS Tonawanda during the 2380s . ( Star Trek: The Fall novel : Peaceable Kingdoms )
  • Lieutenant Simmerith , a male Chelon who served as a security officer aboard the USS Aventine during the 2380s . ( Star Trek: Destiny novel : Mere Mortals '' )
  • Ensign Jutron , a female Chelon combat engineer aboard the USS Enterprise -E in 2384 . ( TNG novel : The Body Electric )

The name Rigellian or Rigelian is generally used in science fiction to refer to any sapient species native to the planetary system of the blue giant Rigel, also known as Beta Orionis, and/or its small companion Rigel B, together with which it forms the Rigel binary system. Incidentally, spectroscopic analysis has suggested that Rigel B itself is a binary, its light coming from two small stars orbiting close to each other; thus making the Rigel system a trinary. The system is located about 850 light years from Earth.

The names Rigellian or Rigelian can refer to:

  • Rigellian (Enterprise) , a distinct humanoid species from Star Trek: Enterprise .
  • Kalar , a humanoid race of savages seen in the original Star Trek pilot "The Cage" as inhabitants of Rigel VII
  • Rigellian (Marvel) , a psychic humanoid race with oversized heads.
  • Rigellian (The Simpsons) , a race of vaguely cephalopod-like creatures from Rigel VII which have attempted to conquer Earth on many times.
  • Rigellian (Star Wars) , a portly race from the Star Wars galaxy. It is more than likely that their name is a coincidence, as Rigel is located in the Milky Way, while Star Wars is specifically described as taking place in a distant galaxy.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery's rhys is starfleet's next great captain, star trek: discovery revealed season 5’s true villain (& it's not the breen).

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 7, "Erigah"

  • Four Starfleet ships defended Federation HQ in "Erigah" on Star Trek: Discovery, but the USS Voyager-J and the 32nd century USS Enterprise were absent.
  • Breen arrived for a blood bounty and President T'Rina negotiated with Primarch Ruhn in a tense face-off.
  • The identified Starfleet ships backing up Federation HQ in "Erigah" were USS Excalibur-M, USS Credence, USS LaMar, and USS Locherer.

The four Starfleet ships that arrived to defend Federation HQ in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah," have been identified, and the USS Voyager-J and 32nd century USS Enterprise weren't among them. Written by M. Raven Metzner and directed by Jon Dudkowski, "Erigah" brought the Breen to the United Federation of Planets' doorstep to collect the Eriagh (Breen blood bounty) on L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow). President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) led the Federation's tense negotiations with the Breen's Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo), and four starships warped in to join the USS Discovery in facing the Breen's massive Dreadnought.

On X, Jörg Hillebrand (@gaghyogi49), who was a renowned researcher on Star Trek: Picard season 3, identified the first two Starfleet ships to back up Federation HQ in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah ", as the USS Excalibur-M and the USS Credence. Check out Hillebrand's posts below:

The final two Starfleet ships warping to the rescue in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7 are the USS LaMar and the USS Locherer , according to Memory Alpha . The Locherer was the starship that captured Moll and L'ak at the start of "Erigah."

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Where Are USS Voyager-J & USS Enterprise In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5?

Other starships are helping the uss discovery.

The USS Voyager-J and a future version of the USS Enterprise are confirmed to be in service in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, but neither have been seen in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Voyager-J was shown in Star Trek: Discovery season 3 , and Lt. Commander Nillson (Sara Mitich) transferred to Voyager-J from the USS Discovery before Star Trek: Discovery season 5 began. Voyager-J was also outfitted with a prototype Pathway Drive, Starfleet's new warp system meant to replace the USS Discovery's spore drive .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 introduced the USS Antares.

Star Trek: Discovery has yet to show the 32nd-century USS Enterprise or determine what generation the legendary starship has reached. The Enterprise was mentioned in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, joining the USS Voyager-J to scan a subspace rift left behind by the Dark Matter Anomaly. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 introduced the USS Antares, the starship formerly commanded by Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). Since Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is its final season, it's unknown whether the USS Enterprise or USS Voyager-J will be seen before the series ends.

Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes Played An Important Role On NCIS: Los Angeles

"Star Trek" veteran Jonathan Frakes has carved quite a legacy out for himself as an actor since replacing Billy Campbell as William Riker , but as a director he's left an even larger footprint. That reach has expanded into the world of "NCIS," specifically "NCIS: Los Angeles." Frakes directed six episodes of the action-drama over its run, adding to his long resume as a director, with the outings he led for the west-coast "NCIS" spanning eight seasons, and include the memorable Christmas episode "Free Ride" from Season 4.

Frakes' influence over the world of "NCIS: LA" doesn't just stop with his directing chops. He also has an uncredited appearance in an "NCIS: Los Angeles" episode "Disorder" from Season 2, playing a brief role as the nonspeaking Navy Commander Doctor Stanfill; the "Star Trek" actor goes uncredited for his performance, though he did receive credit for directing this installment.

While a six episode directing run might sound particularly impressive, it appears just to be another day on the job for Frakes, who continues to lengthen his impressive resume both behind and in front of the cameras.

Jonathan Frakes Has Made Quite A Name For Himself As A Director

From 1990 to 1994, Jonathan Frakes picked up the megaphone to helm eight episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and hasn't stopped since.

Among the veteran performer's many directing credits are three episodes apiece of "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the "Star Trek" films "First Contact" and "Insurrection," six episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" and seven episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," which he swears is back on track for Season 5. His non-"Star Trek" directing credits are equally impressive and include 13 episodes of "Leverage," five episodes of "Burn Notice" and 10 of the TNT dramady "The Librarians" and the "Librarians"-universe television film "The Librarian III: Curse of the Sacred Chalice." As of press time he's still got a foot in both the acting and directing games, and even produced the CW classic "Roswell" and 11 episodes of "The Librarians."

It hasn't all been roses for Frakes, who told Variety  in 2023 that his very first time shepherding the rowdy, closely-knit "Next Generation" cast made him sympathize with previous directors who were frustrated by the experience. "I had a lot of support, including from my acting company. But I realized what these other directors had gone through and what a****** we were. And I had not a leg to stand on in terms of asking them to behave." But, since then, he's more than gotten his space legs under him.

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Navigates Its Way Through In “Labyrinths”

Absolutely no love for Star Trek: Enterprise apparently. Not one of the 4 covers acknowledges it in any way. Even the case with the crew figurines from all of the shows leaves them out. Pretty egregious misstep IMO.

I stand to be corrected, but I don’t believe that Enterprise ever featured in the comics?

Enterprise appeared in comics in MAD Magazine in 2002.

Star Trek: Enterprise was featured in IDW’s Star Trek Waypoint #4. I think this was Enterprise’s first appearance in a comic.

It’s the forgotten show. Seems to get very little coverage which is a shame in my view. I’d take it over Discovery by quite a bit (with exception of Season 2 when Pike et al showed up).

…when I quit DSC at the end of S2 I went back and revisited ENT. ENT is vastly superior, imo. Shame it wasn’t added here.

I did a complete re-watch during lockdown and enjoyed it quite a bit. The HD visuals were good for the era and generally the show looked great.

Yeah, noticed that. Really bad form.

You can blame Scott Backula for that – he won’t let his likeness be used…I wonder why – he had no problem in the early 1990’s for the QL comic…

The only thing oversized there is Picard!

Wow, they have Captain Georiou who was Captain in two or three episodes and Captain Shaw on the cover, but no Captain Archer that had an entire series?? Huge disrespect.

I also noted that in the recent Peabody award summary, they went to the trouble of naming all the Captains from Kirk through the Berman era with exception of Archer. As I said in my post above, it’s the forgotten show which again seems very unfair and I agree, somewhat disrespectful.

They have ____ but not ____! Verily, I am outraged!

oh look – another era spanning series…how original.

What’s with the Borg Corgi? What am I missing?

That was from the DS9 series a while back set during the Dominion War.

The Dog of War….if you really want to subject yourself to it

JUSTICE FOR ENTEPRISE!

JUSTICE FOR THE NX-01 CREW!

It seems to be the World War 1 of Trek shows. Regrettably forgotten.

Yep. See my post above about the Peabody award Star Trek summary. It’s as if Enterprise never existed.

I actually quite like Enterprise , but I genuinely think the ending was so hated that people have erased it from their personal canon. That finale killled the whole series!

the craptastic theme song from the very first episode killed that series

Lest we forget!

I’VE GOT FAAAAAAITH OF THE HEART!!

#NeverForget

Didn’t we have issue #400 not so long ago?
