Sudhagad Fort trek also known as Bhorapgad was built as a hill fort. It was built for defensive advantage due to rise in elevation It is situated in Pali,Maharashtra and lies within the Sudhagad Wildlife Sanctuary.
According to sources, the Sudhagad Fort was built around in 2nd century B.C and is said to be the same age as the Thanale Caves and Khadsamble Caves which are not far from Sudhagad. It got its name Bhorapgad after the presiding deity, Bhoraidevi and was eventually named Sudhagad meaning sweet one in 1657, after the Marathas captured it from the Bahamani Sultan.
Owing to its large size, it was the only fort that was considered by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to be the capital of the Maratha Empire.
During the regime of Peshwas, the ‘Pantsachivas of Bhor- the Pant Sachiv family of Bhor state were made the keepers of the Sudhagad Fort but the fort became patron less in 1950 when the princely states were annexed. Since then it is in a state of wreckage.
Sudhagad Fort is at a height of 620m above sea level. The area surrounding the fort is the Sudhagad Wildlife Sanctuary. The Thakurwadi village is base village and is the starting point for the most used and popular route.
On reaching the fort, one can visit the Bhoraidevi temple which is well maintained and can see the ruins of two temples dedicated to Shiva. From the top of the fort, two lakes, a house, a large granary , some tombs and the shrine of Vrindavan can also be seen. The Sudhagad Fort offers a clear view of forts like Sarasgad, Korigad, Dhangad and Taila-Baila. The fort has a number of secret passages as well. The largest of the three doors on the fort is called the Maha Darwaja.
The slopes of the hill have Pandhri trees which are used as walking sticks.
The Sudhagad Fort trek has an easy trail and consists of slopes and steps carved of solid rocks. For vertical patches, long ladders have been provided for an easy climb. Upon reaching the entrance, the fort has three entrance gates-the Pachchapur Darwaja, the Dindi Darwaja and the Maha Darwaja, the largest one. One can also have a night stay at the Pantsachiv wada and Bhorai mata Mandir.
The base village is Thakurwadi village and from here it takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach the summit.

The trek distance is around 3.5 kms to reach the top, and it will take approximately 2-2.5 hours with ample breaks.
The trek starts from Thakurwadi village (you will find signs pointing towards the trail of the fort).
The initial trek goes through plain farming lands & after 15 mins, you enter the thick forest; here, you will come across the first ladder section & stone steps section on the trail.
After the forest section, you reach another iron ladder which leads to proper steps made out of stone, leading you to the fort’s entry.
You can make your food arrangements at the top where you camp with the help of the local caretaker who stays at the wada on top of the fort.

Trek to Sudhagad - the abode of Bhoraidevi
Sudhagad is a fort located near Pali, about away from Khopoli. Getting there from Mumbai or Pune is quite easy, and so it is a popular trekking destination. Sudhagad was originally referred to as Bhorapgad, after the Goddess Bhoraidevi who was the family deity of the Pant Sachivas family who ruled over the Bhor district in which the fort lies. However the origin of this fort is said to date back to the 2nd century B.C., the same age as the Thanale Caves and Khadsamble caves nearby ( ref ).
There are various documented routes to climb the mountain to the trek:
- The main route is from Dhondase village to the north of the fort. As you travel south from Pali on state highway 93, there is a turn to the left at Wavloli village going towards Dhondase. The trekking route from Dhondase is supposed to be quite well defined and reaches the fort at the main entrance or "Maha Darwaja"
- The other route is from the south of the fort, from a village called Thakurwadi. From Pali, go south on state highway 93 and turn left at Adsule village towards Pachchapur. Thakurwadi is at the end of the road ahead from Pachchapur
We took the second route. This route is now more frequently used by trekkers due to the steel ladders that have been fitted at the most difficult spots on the route, thereby avoiding the toughest parts of the climb.
Thakurwadi is a small village with a population of about 300 people surrounded by rice fields.
Sudhagad is so big, and so many things to see on it that one visit is not enough. There are other attractions such as a secret passageway, and several bastions all around that need to be explored... surely another visit is warranted!

TIPS/HACKS/SUGGESTION: Convenient Backpack For One Day Trek
My personal experience.
We got a train to Khopoli from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, so has per the plan we boarded 17:33 train from CST and reached Khopoli by 20:00.The base village of the Sudhagad Fort is Thakurwadi (approx. 45kms)from Khopoli railway station).
Now let me guide you on how I traveled from the station to this base village:
From Khopoli railway station go to khopoli bus stop; an auto ride on sharing basis will cost you Rs. 10. The distance from Khopoli bus stop to Pali-Balleshwar temple is 30km, for which we hitched a ride as the last bus from Khopoli bus stop was at 20:00, We decided to stay put for a night here & stayed at a hotel for just Rs.100. (Got this deal after a negotiating but cant reveal the hotel’s name, sorry)
The next morning at 7 AM we resumed our journey to Thakurwadi village, which was around 11kms from our current destination, it costed around Rs.17 in a state transport bus. And we arrived!! Once you reach the base village, I recommend that you have a word with the locals about the route to Sudhagad Fort, they will surely tell you and plus its a very easy route. First you will see a stairs (see pic below.)and then again some set of stairs. The route is well marked you will find it easy to hike towards the top of fort. (Browse through the images).
![sudhagad trek distance from pune step on the way to sudhagad fort](https://trekraw.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_20170305_075041404_opt.jpg)
When you pass the above the steps you would see a water body on the left hand side around 50-60 meter away After this you will reach the top of the fort in 20-30 minutes and will be able to spot a lake.
![sudhagad trek distance from pune water body under the tree at Sudhagad fort](https://trekraw.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_20170305_143117123_opt.jpg)
Now walk towards the right of the lake after which you would see the mansion (“waada” as known in Marathi) and the Taak Maak point. After exploring the fort and we took a nap in the mansion after which we headed back to the base village where the bus was at 15:00. (Another bus is available at 18:00 o’clock).
![](http://spottech.site/777/templates/cheerup/res/banner1.gif)
So to sum up the cost of this trek:
Train= CST – Khopoli (return)= Rs. 60
Bus= Khopoli – Pali (return)=Rs. 60
Stayed at pali = Rs.100- because of the delay missing out on the last
bus (extra cost )
Bus= Pali – Thakurwadi=Rs.34
Total expenditure=Rs. 254.
So if you are able to manage your time and everything is in place as per the plan, you can complete the trek in Rs.154 only. Just carry your lunch and snacks with you. If you have any queries , please feel free to contact me. I am just like you – A traveler seeking thrill by discovering new places amazing adventures!.
TIP/HACKS/SUGGESTION : Best Shoes with great grip on mountains, which is used by almost all Trekker’s
You can also Read my blog on Devkund Waterfall which is near by Sudhagad and plan to visit.

I would love to climb the ladder.the scary part is the most adventurous. I'm glad you have fan.
It's wonderful that you were careful with your planning. That stinks about the road condition making the roads a little hard to navigate at some points. We have that here too and it makes it hard on bike riders. But good road conditions matter.

Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas. However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.

The structure resonates of Italian architecture, elegant yet intricate and magnificent.Of all the rooms and features of the palace, its arches are the most beautiful, almost mesmerising to the eyes. Most of these reflect Gandhi’s lifestyle, thereby offering visitors a deep insight into the Mahatma’s life. Moreover, it is because of this and Gandhi’s links to it that the palace is now also known as the Gandhi National Memorial Society. One of the most prominent attractions of the palace is the room where Gandhi stayed during his imprisonment, along with his personal belongings and pictures of the other freedom fighters. |

10 Offbeat Treks In Maharashtra To Avoid Crowds On Weekends
Share this story
By Akshita Makhija
Trekking in Maharashtra is almost like a festival. The rich culture, history and heritage of various forts across the state are what make this place a beloved among trekkers across India.
This also leads to traffic and huge crowds on weekends. Inturn, this is harming the ecosystem of the Sahyadris and leading to accidents. We have seen treks like Devkund Waterfall getting banned due to deaths almost every week. We have seen a huge line of trekkers on the ladders of Kalsubai.
Yet, there are some beautiful, offbeat treks which not many people know about. Over commercialization and promotion of only some Maharashtra treks have hidden away these gems of treks. These treks will not only connect you to nature but also let you enjoy the serenity of being one of the very few on the trek.
Here are 10 such treks that you can do yourself and experience most of the magic of the Sahyadri range.
Quick navigation list

Ghangad is a short but an 'all in one package' trek, which can be done in a day or with camping. It has a forest section, a surprise at the boulder section, an adventurous climb up a steep metal ladder and a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains from the top. It is suitable for both fit beginners and experienced trekkers.

If you have never experienced raging winds, Rohida, a fort near Pune, is a must-do trek. If you are trekking in monsoon, on the left side of the ridge you see waterfalls that flow upwards, so fierce is the wind here. Along with this, some breath-taking views of the farms and water dams can be seen from the bastions. There are a total of six bastions covering the fortification wall. All of these are still strong.

The rock-cut steps while climbing to the pinnacle will leave you astonished. The Ridge walk on the Sindola Fort trek is a celebration for the eyes. You can see beautiful wildflowers all around you.

Durg and Dhakoba are the two prominent peaks on the plateau between Naneghat and Bhimashankar ranges in Pune. The sheer vertical cliffs descending on the Konkan side offer exhilarating exposure. While Durg is a fort, Dhakoba is a tall mountain. The whole range between Durg Dhakoba and Bhimashankar is a flat plateau with peaks and thick forests in between.
You will find a few tribal hamlets in these forests. You’d be surprised that vast mountain ranges like these can exist so close to an urban jungle like Mumbai! Filled with dense forests and beautiful meadows, a trek to Durg and Dhakoba will take you away from noise to a land of peace and beauty over a weekend.
