1ST HAND KNOWLEDGE

Quick turnaround time and great practical knowledge. Understood my brief and what my clients requirements were .Everything came through in logical order and I know that the ground support is excellent should there be any issues. I love the peace of mind.

Cancelled due to Covid epidemic and they kept our deposits.

I did not book with Sun Island Tours in 2024 so unsure why I’ve received this survey but did in 2020. My friend and I had to cancel due to the start of the Covid epidemic and they kept our deposits.

Reply from Sun Island Tours

Hi Julie, If you can please send through your full name or reference number, we can look into what was booked and why we charged our deposit for cancellation. Note that during the pandemic, in general, we offered clients the option to opt for a credit or cancel and only charge our deposit. Any refunds were then processed within 48 hours. Hope this helps.

So helpful, so delightful and well priced

I needed to know everything about a Croatian Cruise and I was delighted when I came across Sun Island Tours. Katie was super helpful, patient and efficient. She made recommendations, explained the differences and happily offered advice and suggestions without pressure. Katie then helped me by sending messages to the cruise operators requesting last minute availability and shared my joy when I was able to make a choice between great options. I would highly recommend Sun Island Tours. They made the whole process easy and efficient. Thanks again

Date of experience : 03 April 2019

Thank you Kerry for your kind words. We pride ourselves on having the largest range of Croatia Cruising product in the Australian market. This helps when finding the perfect fit your clients. Katie has been informed and congratulated on her service. Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you in the future.

Dream Holiday Success with Sun Island Tours.

Last September I went on my dream holiday to Italy with Sun Island tours. Dannielle made sure everything was booked early with 3 days to explore Rome. We stayed right at the Trevi Fountain and walking distance to the Coloseum. The bus tour of Tuscany and Sicily was awesome with amazing guides who went out of their way to accommodate every request. At one point there was a small problem and it was sorted out quickly and fairly with a few phone calls by our guide. Dannielle and Sun Island tours made my dream come true with an experience I will treasure forever.

Date of experience : 16 April 2019

Thank you Jeanette for your feedback. We are so delighted to hear you had a great time in Italy. Dannielle is a very knowledgable consultant, who has great tidbits and service on any issues that may arise. We look forward to organising your future visits to the Mediterranean. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

Land tour from Dubrovnik to Dubrovnik…

Land tour from Dubrovnik to Dubrovnik through Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia (with a side trip to Montenegro) organised through Sun Island Tours. Brilliantly organised and executed. Well-paced road trip, excellent driver and fabulous tour guide (Mirjana Vukusic - funny, knowledgable, great personality). Mirjana ensured everything ran smoothly and was a great resource for shopping. She also regularly followed up a lost bag and made sure that when recovered it was forwarded. Local guides in Mostar, Sarajevo, Belgrade and Split gave us insight into the history and recent troubles of the area. So much history. Cannot speak highly enough of Sun Island and their local representative, Atlas Tours. Now have Sun Island on 'speed dial' in anticipation of our next trip.

Katie was super helpful on chat guiding me through my first time using ferry booking option on travel agent portal. Checking in to see how I was going and answering my many question to ensure that I could give correct information to my passengers. Really appreciate being able to use chat option with res staff.

Hi Felicity, Thank you for your review. I will pass on your kind words to Katie. She knows Greece very well, and coupled with our online booking system, it makes it super easy to book ferries in the Mediterranean. Please let us know if you need any further support, and thank you for your continued business. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

We have been informed by our agent that…

We have been informed by our agent that the $5000 we have paid towards the land portion of our Italian tour for May 2020 through Sun Island Tours is regarded as deposit and is NON refundable. This, we are informed, is because Sun Island Tours has already paid suppliers in Italy and they can only work on what the terms are from the Italian suppliers. We are not interested in credit options as our decision is to cancel the trip. We understand there would be a cancellation fee, but to lose $5000 is very upsetting.

Date of experience : 19 November 2020

Dear Shirley Thank you for your reply and further information. As you have pointed out, the fee that is charged is NOT charged by Sun Island Tours , but the overseas supplier for your group booking. We are not charging any fees at all on this group booking, but have only passed on the unrecoverable fees from the overseas suppliers in Italy. We have also offered a credit option whereby you can travel in 2021 or 2022 without any fees charged at all. As we have worked tirelessly on your group, again without charging any fees ourselves, we believe that it is very unreasonable to receive a one star review. Please speak with your travel agent if you require any further information. Thank you John @ Sun Island Tours

I feel I need to share how grateful I am to have been dealing with Sun Island tours, and in particular, Zena in the groups division. The service has been outstanding, knowledge of the destinations brilliant and their pricing is GREAT. During this Covid period Sun Island Tours have gone above and beyond to help with ensuring passengers money is safe and secure with their overseas suppliers. I cannot recommend them highly enough

May 2019- I have just returned to Australia from the 16 day 'The Best of Spain, Portugal & Morocco' Tour and loved it. Tour Guides, Drivers and hotels were good & hotel breakfasts catered to every taste. Optional extra's provided some nice surprises. No complaints from me & happy to recommend this tour to others with previous travel experience, not the first time traveller.

Date of experience : 29 May 2019

Dear Marie, Thank you for your feedback and apologies for the delay. Great to hear all the positive feedback re our drivers, hotels, meals and optional excursions. I agree, this large tour is not for a first time travellers, as it is made up of other tours with different guides and drivers. We do this in order to offer more than 30 tours in Spain, with weekly guaranteed departures. But by doing this the touring is a little more 'flexible'. Glad to hear your recommendation, and looking forward to you travelling with us again. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

Hi Carla, Thank you for your review, and your continued support. Cruising in Croatia is a product in such high demand these days, that it is sometimes difficult to find the right option for the client, or even an available cruise. But as we have the largest range of options in Croatia, we are always happy to assist in finding a perfect fit for your clients. We hope to look after your clients in the future. Kind regards, Zoe @ Sun Island Tours

Croatia tour from Zagreb to Dubrovnik…

Croatia tour from Zagreb to Dubrovnik was exceptional. First class hotels every night, great tour guide and a host of great interesting inclusions. The guide went out of his way to take the scenic route rather than main roads . Stopped every hour and a half for a break for all to enjoy. This tour by Sun Island was one of best we have done out of Australia

Date of experience : 10 April 2019

Thank you Ralph for your feedback. We are so delighted to hear you had a great time in Croatia and look forward to organising your future visits to the Mediterranean. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

Overall a good tour

Overall a good tour, knowledgeable tour guide with very good English. Most Hotels a fairly good standard as was the bus facilities. Would not have seen half as much if we had attempted to do by ourselves. Had not heard of a number of locations but these were the most surprising. An enjoyable way to travel.

Date of experience : 21 May 2019

Thanks Christine, Glad you enjoyed your tour of Spain. You can't go wrong with the tour you chose. Madrid, Caceres, Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Marbella, Granada - all magical destinations! Hopefully you can travel back to the Mediterranean soon :) Regards, Zoe @ Sun Island Tours

Fabulous 6 weeks in Greece

We booked an extensive 6 week holiday with Sun Island Tours to Greece in 2019 that included, hotels, transfers, ferry tickets, share a sail and Grand Tour of Greece. We were extremely happy with the service provided by the staff during the organising and recommendations for accommodation, tours and what we had on our wish list. All staff we had contact with in Greece were professional and we had the best holiday. Locations for accommodation on the islands proved to be perfect.

Travel Agent review

As an Agent, Sun Island Tours is a fantastic option for my clients. I whole-heartedly can book through Sun Island knowing my clients will be taken care of and experience a premium product during their travels.

Hi Barb, Thank you for your review, and your continued support. We hope to look after your clients in the future. Kind regards, Zoe @ Sun Island Tours

Croatia great, weather only fair!

Our Croatian week went without a hitch. Tour guides arrived to collect us promptly each day and then provided accurate and friendly guidance to ensure each destination for the group was easily visited and meeting points at the completion of each day was easily understood by all. All guides spoke clear English and went out of their way to ensure we, as a minority in the small group, were never forgotten. Accommodation in both hotels was very satisfactory to meet our requirements.

Date of experience : 05 June 2019

Dear Ann, Thank you for your review and kind words. Great to hear you had such a lovely time in Croatia and will be passing on the feedback to our team in Australia and Croatia. Looking forward to you travelling with us again. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

Fora’s Take

Perfectly positioned in the center of the Mediterranean and blessed with mild winters and hot summers, Malta and its sister islands of Gozo and Comino are year-round travel destinations. If the best things come in small packages, then at just 122 square miles, Malta is a testament to that. It has temples that are older than the pyramids, medieval towns perched on hilltops, fortifications built by the Knights and sparkling blue seas. Incredible food and wine only add to a unique culture that has been influenced by its many occupiers over the centuries. If you are looking for a European destination that has it all, Malta is it.

Things to do in Malta

Narrow street with a parked car during daytime

Travel back in time and visit one of the prehistoric temple sites like Ħagar Qim, Mnajdra or Ġgantija, spread throughout Malta and Gozo. Don’t miss the impressive underground maze of chambers at the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. If you’re interested in Malta’s Roman past, visit the town of Rabat where you can find catacombs and the remains of a roman villa, Domus Romana, which still has original mosaics in place.

One does not have to look very hard to see the legacy that the Knights of St. John left on the island as the capital city of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built by the Order and still stands in all its magnificence today. Valletta is home to dozens of museums, palazzos, monuments and churches - the most impressive of which is St. John’s Cathedral. The Cathedral holds the tombs of several Grandmasters of the Order and the cathedral museum boasts a Caravaggio painting “The Beheading of John the Baptist”. The Baracca Gardens offer a commanding view across the Grand Harbour to the Three Cities, also built during the Knight’s reign, and you can take a traditional Maltese gondola ride to them from the Valletta waterfront.

The beautiful medieval city of Mdina is another historic gem, and dates back even further than Valletta. It is one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon walking round its shaded alleyways and sqaures, especially on a hot summer day. Visit the Mdina dungeons for a glimpse into Malta’s macabre past under the French occupation, or Palazzo Falson which is the oldest house in Mdina to have survived the 1693 Sicily earthquake.

Malta’s culture is as diverse as its history. Its occupiers have included Phoenecians, Romans, Arabs (the Maltese language is most closely related to Arabic but written in the Roman alphabet), French and (until the 1960s) the British - which means most of the population speak English fluently. Catholicism played a big role in the island’s identity; village life is centered around its parish church and piazza and during the summer months you can go to one of the village feasts that are dedicated to their respective patron saint.

Festivities last a week to ten days, culminating in the feast day itself where the statue of the saint is paraded through the streets to the sound of a brass band; fireworks and catherine wheels, which are still made by hand, put on an impressive show; and people eat and drink in the streets while catching up with friends and neighbours.

The warm waters of the Maltese islands make it a big scuba diving destination. Whether you are an experienced diver or would like to try it for the first time, and maybe get certified on your trip, there are many dive schools that offer courses or guided trips to dozens of dive sites. I caught the diving bug in 2018 and always book a couple of dives when I visit. There are several wreck sites of boats and WWII planes that are really fun for those looking for adventure on their dive.

Watersports are available to rent at most of the beaches and resorts at the north end of the island or if you prefer to take a boat trip, a day at Comino’s Blue Lagoon is fun for all ages. If staying on land is more your speed, take a day trip to Gozo and go on a quad bike tour of the island.

When you need a break from the sightseeing and adventure, why not book an afternoon at one of the many excellent spa’s on the island. One of my favourites is at the Golden Sands Resort. Located by the sea, when you are done being pampered you can enjoy an alfresco cocktail or dinner while listening to the sounds of the waves.

Malta has a very vibrant nightlife and cafe culture. The main area for bars and clubs most popular with a younger crowd can be found in the Paceville area of St. Julian’s but Valletta has come alive in recent years and offers a much more sophisticated nightlife scene with cocktail bars, live music and restaurants open till late at night. Malta also hosts international DJs for parties throughout the summer months.

Day Trips from Malta

Gozo is a short 30 min car and passenger ferry ride from the north end of the island and is a smaller more laid back version of Malta.

Comino can be accessed by a smaller boat from the north end of the island. It is a tiny island with one hotel but it’s blue lagoon is a popular swimming area.

Sicily is 60 miles to the north of Malta and day trips are offered by catamaran with coach tour and stops at Mount Etna, Taormina and Catania before returning to Malta in the evening.

Places to eat & drink in Malta

Tables and chairs next to a tree and body of water during daytime

Maltese Pastizzerias: Can be found in every town and village and offer traditional pastries called Pastizzi (filo pastry parcels filled with savoury ricotta or peas) that are delicious at any time of the day. They also serve other snacks like pizza by the slice, sausage rolls and cold drinks. Be sure to try the Maltese bread too, which is served in most restaurants with your meal, and in my opinion is the best bread in the world!

Manouche Cfraft Bakery: A modern take on the traditional french bakeries and bistros, they are open from breakfast to dinner.

The Hilltop Restaurant: A restaurant in the north of the island serving Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner.

Trattoria A.D. 1530 : Tucked away in a piazza in the Medieval city of Mdina serving lunch and dinner, they have a varied menu that includes some of the best pizza and pasta you’ll ever taste.

The De Mondion Restaurant : If you’re looking for a fine dining restaurant with fabulous panoramic views from the Mdina bastions, this Michelin starred restaurant inside the Xara Palace Relais & Chateau hotel is the place to go.

Acqua Blu : A seafood restaurant in one of the historic Three Cities. Sit by the edge of the water and enjoy your lunch or dinner while looking out across the grand harbour to Valletta.

Soul Food: Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free restaurant in the capital city, famous for their Buddah bowls.

Wagyu : Also in Valletta, this is an Asian Fusion restaurant serving sushi, curries, noodle dishes and an impressive cocktail menu. There is also an upstairs bar with music if you are just looking for somewhere to enjoy a classy cocktail.

Terrazza: Jump over to Gozo (Malta’s sister island) to enjoy an array of dishes and cocktails artfully prepared using local ingredients overlooking the picturesque bay of Xlendi. Get there in time for sunset - it won’t disappoint.

Ta'Tona: Also on Gozo, this family run restaurant is open for dinner during the summer months, and serves Mediterranean cuisine right by the harbour so you can take the ferry across and return after dinner.

La Nostra Padrona: Located in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and specializing in seafood, you can roam the Sunday market then have lunch right by the water’s edge as you watch the fishermen bring in their catch.

Ta Marija : Serving traditional Maltese food since 1964. The national dish of Malta is rabbit which can be prepared as a stew or fried and is delicious.
