I love Teebs. I swear nobody knows how to rock a crowd the way he does. I've seen him multiple times. I'm always looking out to see when he's going to make an appearance because I know I will have a good time.

Teebs has this amazing ability to make an entire crowd dance and move, which most accomplished DJs should really be able to do. What I think really distinguishes him as a musician is the way he creatively puts together different tracks and beats.

He has an uncanny ear for music, and he blends sounds that I wouldn't have ever thought of blending. He's a true artist! When he performs, he's in a zone. I watched his fingers once as he worked at it was just crazy to see him twist knobs and move from one side of the table to the text. He's putting together something truly original for his audience members, and I have the greatest appreciation for his skill and his dedication to producing good music.

I've really lost faith recently in musicians who have forgotten the importance of their fans and just giving them something interesting and provocative to listen to. I'm thankful for Teebs, who never disappoints me when I see him live, who always works hard to produce music that will astonish and inspire me!

Mtendere Mandowa, aka Teebs

Mtendere Mandowa, also known as Teebs, is an electronic artist from Los Angeles. Though he rarely works with musical instruments himself, he takes other people's recordings, loads them onto his laptop and manipulates the sounds. He adds layer after layer, beat upon beat, until he's left with a chaotic collage of sound.

Born in New York, Mandowa was raised by parents from Malawi and Barbados. As a child, he says, he listened to a lot of calypso, which influenced his music's aesthetic.

"Calypso is more fast-paced," he says, "but this happy nature, being on an island, it related right back into the music that I was making."

This type of music has often been described as "beat music" -- a style that originated in Los Angeles with producers such as Flying Lotus.

"It kind of stems from hip-hop, or people doing production for rappers," he says. "But as time went on -- and more kids had equipment to make their own things but not the proper vocals to fit their music -- they started filling in the gaps."

A number of things can fill these gaps, he says -- some conventional, others not so much. As Mandowa listens to the song "Double Fifths" with Weekend All Things Considered host Guy Raz, he points out the elements that go into each of his productions.

"You're hearing a harp, shakers, recorded drum taps ... and change falling," he says. "I have a machine called an SP 404 -- it's a little sampler with a built-in mic, and I record everything into there and keep re-affecting it there and then into a computer. I've used tape peeling off something and the door-slamming of a microwave before."

An Intense Time

Creating Ardour was not without its share of challenges for the 23-year-old producer. His father died in the middle of the project, at which point he returned home and stopped making music.

"That was a really intense time; it was last year. Actually, my brother ... was really sick at the time also, and he got taken away to be hospitalized because it was getting too out of control for my mother," Mandowa says. "So it was a crazy time when he left, and then my dad passed away, and it was just kind of like a whole shutdown, so I moved back home immediately after that, and I just wasn't making any more music. So there was a four- or five-month break period. Then I randomly bought some equipment, a little flute and wind chimes, and then I made a song on the record called 'Burner,' and I think from then on, things were a little bit different."

Mandowa's father had never listened to his son's music before getting sick. But during his fight with cancer, the elder Mandowa was able to connect with his son and learn what he'd been working on.

"At first, he didn't really know too much," he says. "He died of cancer, and when he was getting more sick and in bed, he had more time. We actually spoke more. I was showing him songs, and he did start to really appreciate it. It was really amazing. He slowed down, and I had more time to be around him, and we kind of understood each other a bit more."

They connected over one song in particular.

"The 'While You Doooo' song was the one he mentioned," Mandowa says. "I was playing him a lot of tunes -- not just my stuff, but a lot of relaxing songs. He didn't even know it was mine, and he thought that was a really beautiful song. And he just kind of stopped the tape. I told him I was the one who made it. It was a really crazy moment."

I first met Noah through mutual friends Ako and Atiba Jefferson. Ako got us all together with some video games online and before realizing who Panda Bear was I found myself asking loads of questions on parenting when I heard his kids in the background during our games together as I was soon to be a father. Eventually our conversations drifted towards music and I started sending him zip files of songs I was working on throughout the years, by this time knowing who he was. We live in different parts of the world so having moments online to catch up during various downtimes between work/tour/family responsibilities are moments I cherish and his work ethic and skills impress and inspire me greatly to push my work further. 'Did it Again’ was one of the demos I loved that was in a more recent batch that I felt was made with him in mind.I remember him mentioning that he felt that it carried a continued feeling from the first released song ‘Studie’.

This tune was made during the time I was working on Anicca, my last full length release on Brainfeeder Records. This was the original file to one of my favorite tunes that has been reworked so many times called ’Threads’ featuring vocals from Anna Wise. When we worked on the song the drums were in and as I began to sort the parts with vocals I felt as though the drums were taking away from the moments I loved from Anna and began to redo the feel of everything for the record. The original demo became something I used for live events but was unsure about what might happen to it until I ran into Eric Coleman, a photographer and person I admire in Los Angeles. We haven't seen each other in years and the moment I played it he came up and mentioned that “this was the one” haha. I’ve never had that reaction from him before so I decided not to dismiss it and finish a version of the demo that did not take away from what ’Threads’ was but could tip a hat towards it. NES is this. An alternate sketch of 'Threads'.

Worked on during a session at Ringgo's old house where we also created the song 'bambo'. This song holds a favorite memory of mine from that day of recording. When we all arrived at Ringgo's place sorting out how to record he was excited to share that we can convert a beautiful sun/mud room with a slight patina into a booth for the first time. Open to the idea we set up a mic and asked Sofie to grab her viola and just listen and improv over the melody. No one had any idea how any of this would sound but the moment she sat down and let her strings vibrate all of our jaws dropped. The room was beautifully lit on a clear post-rain day in Los Angeles and the neighborhood was especially quiet during the time, only hearing sounds of Sofie playing out over the demo with birds chirping, slight seat adjustments and a warm white noise from the day. I'll cherish the memory forever and working with the people that day as I consider them my family.

Recently I’ve been so inspired by the James Webb Telescope photos and was not surprised when Kai Luen, a teacher and artist mentioned they were also inspired by these images and chose to work with them in mind when I reached out about collaborating on this project.
