Brihadishvara Temple is amongst the foremost religious sites in Thanjavur, known for its exemplary Dravidian architecture. The Brihadishvara, Gangaikonda, and Airavatesvara temples are together called the Great Living Chola Temples and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also called the Dhakshina Meru (Meru of the south), this temple was built by Raja Raja Chola I by 1010 AD. Brihadishvarain Tamil means the ‘Big Lord’, and this temple is often also called the ‘Big Temple’. Brihadishvara incorporates the Hindu traditions of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism. One of the largest South Indian temples, the complex has five sections – the sanctum and Vimana (tower), the Nandi hall, the assembly hall (mukhamandapam), the gathering hall (mahamandapam), and the prakara (pavilion). The Shiva lingam in the sanctum sanctorum is one of India’s largest such monolithic sculptures. The presiding deity is worshipped as Karuvarai, meaning ‘womb chamber’. Its 16-storeyed granite vimana is a landmark for the city, and one of the largest vimana in South India. Some significant and beautiful shrines are of Parvati, Murugan, Nandi, Ganesh, Dakshinamurti, Subrahmanyar, Sabhapati, Varahi, and Chandeshvara. The temple is also noted for being the site where the brass Nataraja idol was first commissioned in the 11 th century. The temple walls, floors, and ceilings are adorned with magnificent sculptures, ornate inspirations, and striking murals.

Timings: 6 am to 12:30pm, 4 pm to 8:30pm

2. Brihadisvara Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram

This grand temple was built under Rajendra Chola I in 1035 AD as part of his new capital at Gangaikonda. The Chola king instructed the defeated kings to send pots filled with water from river Ganga, which was poured into Cholagangam, the temple’s Kunda (water tank). The name Gangaikonda is thus made of Ganga and kunda. This temple shares the same design and name as the older Brihadeeswarar temple of Thanjavur, but it is smaller in size and more refined. Both the Brihadeeswarar temples are the largest Shiva temples of South India. This Dravidian style temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by walls and a cascading garden, a massive Nandi bull sits outside facing the main temple sanctum. The sanctum houses the presiding deity, Brihadeeswarar in Shiva lingam form. The temple has five shrines, and the navagrahas (nine planets) are carved out of a single stone. The vimana is deliberately kept shorter than the older Brihadeeswarar temple – as a mark of respect to his father’s work. The sri-vimanais nine-storied features symmetrical artwork, which is repeated in all the levels. The shrinking pattern of the artwork is rhythmic but not linear, lending the vimanaan unusual parabolic form. The neck protrudes in four cardinal directions, capped with kirtimukhas (face), and Nandi bulls seated on each corner. Next, a kalasa (cupola) sits on an open lotus, and above the kalasa, another lotus bud opens into the sky.

Timings: 8 am to 9 pm

3. Airavateswara Temple

Airavateswara Temple

This 12 th century temple was built by Rajaraja Chola II. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Airavateswara is smaller but more exquisite amongst the three Great Living Chola temples. Dedicated to Shiva, the temple also features traditions of Vaishnavism and Shaktism. At some point this temple was destroyed. Its original inner courtyard survives today, along with the Nandi mandapa and stambha (pillar) standing tall outside it. The fine Dravidian architecture exhibited at Airavateswara is called Karakkoil – a style inspired by temple chariots used during festival processions. Morning and evening sun dials form the chariot wheels. The reliefs along with the main temple bear carvings that depict stories of the 63 Bhakti saints. Some stunning sculptures include those of the river goddesses, and the 108 Devara Othuvars- musicians who sang at the royal court. The temple is named after Airavata, Lord Indra’s elephant. As per legend, Airavata’s clean, white skin was restored after it bathed in the temple tank. This legend is even carved on a stone in sanctum. The temple features unusual steps, the Bali Pitham, with intricate carvings and baluster which produce musical notes when waked upon, and are thus called ‘singing steps’.

The temple also houses a shrine of Lord Sarabeswarar, a half-lion half-beast deity. His four-armed and three-legged sculpture is shown with Narasimha struggling under his feet. One of the earliest representations of the mythical creature of Yali in Chola art is found at this temple.

Kapardiswarar, a form of Lord Shiva and his consort Brihannayaki, are the presiding deities. The eight-armed Chakrapani holds a weapon in each hand, and sports a third eye on his forehead. A five-faced (panchamukha) Hanuman is featured in the outer precincts. Parallel to the shrine, is the famous Chakra Padithurai ghat. The offerings to the deity (neivethanam) are consonant with the amount of smoke exuded by the burning corpses at the ghat, symbolizing the chakra (cycle) of life and death. Another peculiarity is the practice of vilvaarchana, a ritual generally performed in Shiva temples. This temple is the venue for Mahamaham festival which is celebrated every 12 years in Kumbakonam.

Unlike other divyadesams where only one shrine is mentioned, all the shrines of Neelamega Perumal are referred in all the paasurams (poems) written by the alwars. Thanjavur History

Thanjavur as a city seems to have existed from the 3rd century BCE. However, Thanjavur rose into prominence during the rule of the Cholas. Towards the end of the 13th century, Malik Kafur annexed Thanjavur on behalf of the Mughals and made it a part of the Delhi Sultanate for a brief period. However, it then came under the Vijayanagara empire under which it remained from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Thanjavur was ruled by the Nayaks of Thanjavur on behalf of the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire . Thanjavur then came under the Bhosale dynasty of the Marathas between the 17th and 19th centuries. In 1855 Thanjavur became a part of British India and its name was recorded as Tanjore.

Very exhaustive guide to Thanjavur. I must visit this marvelous place.

Wow! All of these temples are so majestic and beautiful! I could stare at them all day! Which one is your favorite if you had to pick? I don’t know if I could narrow it down to even a few! Thank you for going into so much detail on each you have done an amazing job with this post.

your post is a visual treat for people like me who have not yet had the pleasure of visiting the temples of Tanjore. To tell you the truth I had only read about them in GK book and never visited south India, so your post is a boon for me. Temples are beautiful & grand. I’ll certainly visit them once the condition improves.

I’m completely awed by the beauty and fascinated looking at all the attention to detail that all these temples have – it is amazing that they are still in such good shape considering when they were built! I would love to visit some of them one day.

It’s hard to decide which of these amazing temples to visit first. I especially like the brightly colored architecture. I suppose this is similar to the vibrant paintings from the Thanjavur area.

So happy to see your post, Sandy. Thanjavur is our native place and not enough can be said about the temple architecture, culture and art. By the way, there is a wonderful historical museum as well. As for temples, there are literally countless temples to visit, each with its own unique story and specialty for devotees. Brihadishwarar temple – we have been visiting this since I was a toddler and it is amazing to see how the temple has changed over the years. I remember being amazed to realize the Pravati shrine was fully air conditioned! I love to visit the temples of south India – there are so many hidden gems that dazzle visitors with their sheer magnificence.

These temples are all so beautiful! The detail and craftsmanship are just stunning. I’m especially amazed that the natural pigments have retained their color for so long! If I’m ever in this part of India, I’ll be sure to take a guided tour of these temples.

What a comprehensive guide. I cannot even try to imagine how many temples there must be in India. However, Thanjavur looks just great and your guide is so comprehensive. And I know that I would do some serious shopping, too 😉

Wow, these temples are truly stunning!! I’ve never seen anything like this before. What a great guide to the temples and surrounding areas.

All of these temples are spectacular! I have never been to an old temple like these, but it is on my bucket list. The architecture is outstanding. It would be interesting to attend a service at one of them as well to get a true feeling of what they are like to worship in.

I have never been here but I like the architecture of the temples. You covered everything really well.

I have been to Tamilnadu twice and both the trips were limited to Chennai. Tanjavur is a place I have never about before. Thank you for giving complete guide, it will help plan my future trips to Tamilnadu.

Have heard so much about the architectural beauty of the temples but never been to this beautiful city. May be once the things get better.

According to legend, the Chola king Muchukunda, obtained a boon from Indra, the king of devas, and wished to receive an image of Thyagaraja Swamy(Lord Shiva) reposing on the chest of reclining Lord Vishnu. Indra tried to misguide the king and had six other images made, but the king chose the right image at Tiruvarur.

The Temple is spread across 30 acres making it one of the largest in India and comprises four gopurams or gateway towers, numerous halls, and shrines. One of the unique features of the temple is the standing Nandi Bull facing the main deity. This Temple is another masterpiece and worth visiting.

Brihadisvara Temple: The Astounding Chola Temple of Thanjavur

A trip to Tamil Nadu surely remains incomplete without paying a visit to the stunning Brihadisvara Temple. With its vimana literally touching the sky, this resplendent temple is regarded as an icon of the Tamil Dravida style of temple architecture. It was built by Rajaraja the Great and served as a symbol of the Chola imperial power. Since its inception, the Brihadisvara Temple has continued to awe pilgrims, art enthusiasts, and travellers alike.

Who was Rajaraja I Chola?

Rajaraja the Great was truly the ‘King of Kings’. Known as Rajakesari Arumolivarman (which literally means ‘blessed tongue’), Rajaraja was the greatest Chola emperor, and the long thirty years of his rule constituted the formative period of Chola imperialism.

After ascending the throne, Rajaraja had first assembled a marauding army, and his chariots of war flaunting the tiger pennants launched a victorious march across south India. His empire-building was extremely ambitious. A strategist par excellence, he decisively destroyed the alliance among the Pandyas, Cheras, and Ilam or Lanka. Following this, he undertook the title of Mummudi Chola or ‘Chola with Three Crowns’ as he flexed his domination over the three ancient Tamil kingdoms of Chola, Chera, and Pandya. Next, Rajaraja led his mammoth army towards Tungabhadra and annexed all the territory held by the Gangas and Nolambas in Mysore and Bellary. He also crushed the emerging Hoysala power. He defeated the Chalukyas of Vengi and reduced them to a vassal state. His last military feat was the conquest of ‘twelve thousand islands on seas’ or Maldives. Thus, the dashing emperor built the largest empire that the Tamil country had ever seen.

The massiveness of the temple

Interestingly, after building the first imperial empire of the south, Rajaraja sheathed his sword and concentrated on propagating peace and religion. Now, powerful productive forces were unleashed to take the newly built empire to new heights in art, architecture, religion, literature, administration, and statecraft. He revitalised architecture and commissioned the Brihadisvara Temple, which remains his magnum opus and a symbol of his imperial ambition. He patronized the iconic bronze artwork of Thanjavur and its surrounding region. It was also owing to his earnest endeavours that the hymns composed by the Nayanar saints were collected and compiled into ‘Tevaram’.

The two gopuras

Rajaraja’s charity to the temple was legendary, as was the valour of his army. Both in warfare and in peacetime administration he had no equal. By the end of his rule, Rajaraja’s realm had evolved into an extensive and well-knit empire efficiently organised and administered, rich in resources, and possessed of a powerful standing army.

Why do you need to visit the Brihadisvara Temple?

The Brihadisvara Temple is regarded as the epitome of the Dravida style of temple architecture. It is also one of the largest Hindu temples in India. Built-in granite, it is a ‘Madakkoil’ type of temple, where a large temple is constructed upon a raised platform.

The Brihadisvara Temple

The Thanjavur temple was the most ambitious production of its kind hitherto undertaken by an Indian ruler. It was indeed a landmark in the evolution of temple architecture in southern India. Though the Chola architectural style borrowed ideas from the Chalukyan and Pallava temples, they towered above their predecessors in style, scale, and innovations. It surpassed all earlier temples in effort and size and invested the Chola crown with an immeasurable ritual dignity. It is indeed a remarkable manifestation of the engineering acumen of Chola builders.

Admiring the Great Living Chola Temples

No wonder, UNESCO recognised the brilliance of the Brihadisvara Temple and listed it under the World Heritage Sites in 1987 along with the Brihadisvara Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara Temple of Darasasuram. The trio is called the Great Living Chola Temples .

About Brihadisvara Temple:

The Brihadisvara Temple is also known as Rajarajesvaram (named after its illustrious author) and Thanjai Periya Kovil or Tanjore’s Big Temple. Dedicated to Siva, the construction began in 1003 CE and was completed in 1010 CE.

Built-in granite, Brihadisvara is a ‘Madakkoil’ type of temple, where a large temple is constructed upon a raised platform. The temple is entered through two gopurams, characterized by a plethora of excellent sculptures and barrel-vaulted roofs. As per the prevalent Hindu norms, it faces east. It is divided into five main sections – a Nandi mandapa, a mukha mandapa, a maha mandapa, a connecting antarala, and the ‘garbha griha’ or sanctum with the imposing vimana.

TAMILNADU 91 Edit 2

The temple was given a cosmic symbolism by calling it the ‘Dakshina Meru’ or Meru of the south (Meru being the mythical, sacred mountain serving as the centre of all universes). It was not only a centre of territorial authority of Rajaraja I, it was also symbolically the cosmic axis of the universe.

The details of gopura

Thanjavur’s temple served as the political iconography of Rajaraja, representing the significant efforts at centralisation of power through various measures such as revenue surveys, redefining the ‘nadus’, encouraging the growth of ‘nagarams’, and setting up a systematic tax structure. Thanks to the series of stupendous military conquests of Rajaraja, the Brihadisvara Temple received revenues not only from the core Chola territory but also from the captured kingdoms.

Arrangement of sculptures

In its heyday, the temple had over 800 employees, including 400 temple dancers to entertain Siva and 50 musicians to regularly recite the ‘tevaram’ hymns composed by Tamil Saiva poet–saints. In addition, 175 celibate students mobilised from Brahmana villages served as assistants to the priests. Watchmen were employed to keep vigil, and their numbered nearly 150. Animal donations were also enormous, and Rajaraja himself gifted 2928 cows to this temple. These animals were again entrusted to 61 shepherds living in the vicinity of Tanjore. Across southern India and Sri Lanka, 369 settlements were connected with Thanjavur as endowments for the maintenance of Brihadisvara.

The superstructure

The ‘kovil’ was all rolled into one – the landholder, employer, and consumer of goods and services, while also filling in as a bank, school, museum, hospital, and theatre. Though loot and plunder accounted for its prosperity, it nevertheless served as a nucleus gathering around itself all that was best in art, music, poetry, and technology. The temple at the centre of the city was a cultural and artistic emporium.

Arrangement of sculptures

Moreover, the city of Thanjavur expanded around the Brihadisvara Temple at its core. Its lofty vimana and gopuras adorned the city’s skyline. The area around the temple was lined with mansions housing the city’s political and priestly elites. The next section was occupied by the rich merchants. Thanjavur boasted four huge markets, catering a variety of goods to different strata while having separate opening and closing hours.

What to see inside the Brihadisvara Temple complex?

Two stunning gopuras welcome visitors, who arrive for a Darsana. While the first gopura ascends up to five storeys, the second one is smaller and has three tiers. Both are characterized by barrel-vaulted roofs and a plethora of superb sculptures. The sculptures depict a pantheon of divinities such as various forms of Siva and his consort Parvati, Ganesa, Surya, Vishnu, and so on. The carvings also illustrate Saivite stories like the marriage of Siva – Parvati , Siva protecting Markandeya , and Arjuna winning the ‘Pasupata’ weapon .

Gopura

The smaller gopura is further flanked by two life-size and fierce dvarapalas. The dvarapalas are characterized by four arms, fangs protruding from their mouths, knitted eyebrows, rolling eyes, and hands in ‘tarjani’ or threatening and ‘vismaya’ or wonder mudras. This intimidating posture of ‘dvarapala’ is a standard found in every Chola temple, which differs greatly from the Pallava ‘dvarapala’ who appears quite natural.

Dvarapala

The gopuras are made of tiny ‘sala’ (rectangular), ‘kuta’ (square), and ‘panjara’ (apsidal) temples, and punctuated with elaborate lion-headed ‘kudu’ or arches.

Details of gopura

Nandi Pavillion:

A huge monolithic Nandi sits under a canopy of mandapa and faces the main shrine. The mandapa is a later addition, and its ceiling bears paintings from the Nayaka period.

Nandi Shrine

Sri Vimana:

The sky-kissing Sri Vimana of Brihadisvara Temple is truly a sight to behold. It soars high at 65 meters with 15 receding tiers and is decorated with miniature ‘sala’ (rectangular), ‘ kuta’ (square) , and ‘panjara’ (apsidal) temples. The superstructure perhaps served as a metaphor for the grandeur of the Chola Empire. The taller the temple tower, the more awe the emperor generated among friends and foes alike.

TAMILNADU 108 Edit 2

One of the most fascinating features of Brihadisvara is its gigantic ‘stupi’ , which weighs around 80 tonnes . It is popularly believed to have been dragged up to its current position along an inclined plane that had its base at a place called ‘Sarapallam’, which lies 6.44 km away. The master designers built the hollow tower by interlocking stones without using any binding material.

Sri Vimana

Sculptures on the outer walls:

The exterior of the temple is adorned with alternating ‘koshtha panjara’ or niches and decorative ‘ kumbha panjaras’ or columnar niches with pot-like bases. The ‘koshtha panjara’ or niches are embellished with exquisite sculptures. Most of these carvings manifest Saivite themes, but a handful of them exhibit Vaishnavite themes. The Gods and demigods, engraved inside the niches, display ‘navarasa’ or human emotions with remarkable facial and bodily details. In fact, the Chola craftsmen gave shape to the ingenious iconography that the Nayanar saints had painted with their minds.

Nataraja

The sculptures are distributed along two layers. The lower niches depict Ganesha, Vishnu with Sri-Devi and Bhu-Devi, Lakshmi, Vishnuanugraha Murti, Bhikshtana, Virabhadra, Dakshina Murti, Kalantaka, and Natesa on the southern wall, Hari-Hara, Ardhanarisvara, Chandrasekhara on the west wall, Gangadhara, Sarasvati, Uma – Mahesvara, Mahisasuramardini, Chandrasekhara, Bhairava on the north wall.

Sculpture on wall

The upper niches on all walls contain Tripurantakas repeated in each niche. The Tripurantaka iconography somewhat represents the imperialist achievements of Rajaraja I himself. Just as Siva in his Tripurantaka form is the destroyer of three cities of the ‘asuras’, Rajaraja was the conqueror of three kingdoms of Pandyas, Cheras, and Eelam (Sri Lanka).

Sculpture

Inside the inner passageway of the sanctum, the walls showcase the unfinished series of 81 of the 108 ‘karana’ or dance poses from Bharata’s Natya Shastra . Interestingly, here Siva himself, as the Nataraja or lord of dance, is depicted as the dancer.

The Sanctum:

The innermost sanctum houses a linga, which is named Rajarajesvaram – Udayar after Rajaraja I, its author. It is also called ‘adavallan’ or ‘One who can Dance Well’ and ‘Dakshina Meru Vitankan’. Both of these names are generally associated with the Siva linga of Nataraja Temple of Chidambaram, whom the Cholas greatly revered, and thus adopted by them for the linga of Brihadisvara. The enormous linga is 8.7 metres high and receives worship four times a day.

Inscriptions:

The massive platform is fully covered with inscriptions in elegant Chola Grantha and Tamil letters. Of these, 64 inscriptions belong to Rajaraja I, and 29 to his son and successor Rajendra I.

Inscriptions of Rajaraja

The inscriptions mostly describe the achievements of Rajaraja I and his generous and skilful endowments meant for the upkeep of this massive temple.

One of the most fascinating features of Brihadisvara Temple is the abundance of wall murals dating back to the times of the Cholas. The paintings are of exceptional quality and art experts put them in the same bracket as the more famous Ajanta Cave paintings.

Gajalakshmi

The dark passage surrounding the temple’s sanctum contains striking specimens of paintings. The western wall is adorned with a huge panel of Siva as Dakshina Murti , seated in a yogic pose. A little further, you can see a Nataraja temple as well as a large figure of Nataraja dancing in the golden hall at Chidambaram. Nearby, Rajaraja himself is painted along with his guru, Karuvar Devar. The entire northern wall is covered by a gigantic figure of Tripurantaka Siva on a chariot driven by Brahma , which is regarded as a masterpiece of Chola painting.

More vibrant paintings belonging to the Nayaka era are found on the inner walls of the cloister mandapa that surrounds the temple. The subjects of these paintings, found on the northern and western walls, include Gaja Lakshmi, Uma–Mahesvara, Sarasvati, Mahisasuramardini, self-immolation of Sati, royal processions, and so on.

Nataraja painting

Additional shrines inside the temple complex:

The Brihadisvara Temple complex hosts a number of smaller shrines.

Subsidiary shrines

Shrines are dedicated to Siva’s consort Parvati, his sons Subhramanyam (built by the Nayakas) and Ganesa (constructed by the Marathas), Varahi (quite popular among the local residents), Rajaraja’s guru Karuvar Devar, Chandesvara, and Nataraja.

Maratha Palace, Thanjavur: A Complete Guide (2024)

Maratha Palace in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

India is famous for its abundance of temples and that’s the reason why many people come to Thanjavur (Tanjore) in the state of Tamil Nadu (South India). This city is home to the famous 11th-century Brihadisvara Temple, which is one of the three great living Chola temples . But there’s more to Thanjavur than temples alone – this city is also home to the Maratha Palace (locally known as Aranmanai ), for example, which is a great place to explore after seeing the temples.

With its rich history and beautiful architecture, the Maratha Palace is one of the best places to see in Thanjavur.

You will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on visiting it in this little guide. Including its opening hours, entry fee, what to see and other useful information.

Maratha Palace in Thanjavur: Everything you need to know

Mahratta Durbar Hall at Maratha Palace in Thanjavur

A little history

The Maratha Palace (or Aranmanai) was built between 1534 and 1535 at the demand of the Thanjavur Nayak kings. These kings ruled the city from the 15th to the 17th century. According to historians, the palace was originally built as a fort and not as a palace, and prisoners of war were used as labourers to build it.

After the Maratha ruler Venkoji captured the palace in 1674, it became the residence of the Thanjavur Maratha kings , who further extended the palace.

Most of the Maratha Kingdom was annexed by the British Empire in 1799. However, the Marathas remained in charge of their palace.

Today, the Bhosle family , who are the descendants of the Maratha Kings, own the Maratha Palace.

Planning your visit to the Maratha Palace in Thanjavur

The Maratha Palace is home to one of the oldest libraries in Asia and its Durbar Hall is truly stunning! You will find everything you need to know to make the most of your visit below.

What to see at the Maratha Palace

It can be a little tricky to find your way at the Maratha Palace as there are a total of eight sections to see and no clear signs of where you should head.

Map of the places to see

I hope this map and the information below will help you get around the place more easily. During my visit, I struggled a bit to find the right direction.

Things to see

  • Royal Palace Museum: At this small museum, you will find weaponry, coins, kitchen utensils and other items. It’s also home to a collection of sculptures.
  • Serfoji Memorial Hall: This hall can be found next to the Royal Palace Museum. It commemorates Maharaja Serfoji II who ruled Thanjavur between 1787 and 1793 during his first reign and between 1798 and 1832 during his second reign. You will find some artefacts and photographs here too.
  • Mahratta Durbar Hall: This is my favourite place in the palace! The Mahratta Durbar Hall is the palace’s royal court hall. Its colourfully painted walls and ceiling are truly stunning, they depict images of Hindu deities as well as Maratha rulers.
  • Sarasvati Mahal Library: Being established in the 16th century, the Sarasvati Mahal is one of the oldest libraries in Asia. It houses a rare collection of palm leaf manuscripts written in Sanskrit, Tamil and other Indian languages.

Bell Tower in Thanjavur

  • Bell Tower: This seven-storied building was built by the Nayaks and it’s believed that it used to be higher. The Bell Tower once housed a clock tower with a bell that rang every hour. I’ve heard that there’s a beautiful view over Thanjavur from the top, but when I visited it, it wasn’t possible to go there.
  • Art Gallery (Nayak Palace & Arsenal Tower): This palace was converted into a gallery where you will find a collection of weapons, coins, statues and other artefacts. It also houses the Arsenal Tower, which was used by the Marathas as a place to store weapons. Today, you can climb this tower’s stairs and admire the skeleton of a whale inside. This animal washed ashore in 1955.
  • Sangeet Mahal : You will find this hall opposite the art gallery. It was built as an auditorium in 1600 and it was designed to reduce reflected sound. It’s still used to house events today.
  • Sharjah Madi : This pink building is famous for its beautiful ornate balconies. It’s interesting to note that these balconies get smaller the higher they are on the building. The best way to see the Sharjah Madi is from East Main Street.

Opening hours and entry fee of Maratha Palace

The Maratha Palace in Thanjavur is open every day from 9 am to 6 pm . It does close for public holidays and during lunch hours, so I would avoid heading to the palace around noon.

It costs 30 INR to visit the palace, and an extra 30 INR if you want to take pictures. It’s good to know that you need to buy three different tickets if you want to see the entire palace.

Best time to visit Thanjavur

The best time to visit Thanjavur is during the winter, between October and March . This is when the weather will be most pleasant.

I visited the city in the Summer, which lasts from April to June, and it was SCORCHING hot, so I wouldn’t advise doing the same.

If you’re visiting Thanjavur during the monsoon season (June to September), it will be somewhat cooler than during the summer but it will still be hot and you will experience quite some rainfall.

It took me about 1,5 hours to visit the Maratha Palace. I would have stayed a little longer if it hadn’t been that hot, though.

How to get to the Maratha Palace in Thanjavur

First, you will have to head to Thanjavur , which is easily accessible from other cities by local bus , train or plane .

The Maratha Palace is located in the centre of the city, 1,5 km (0,9 mi) from Thanjavur’s famous Brihadisvara Temple. I took an auto-rickshaw to the temple and walked to the palace after visiting the temple. I thought it was an interesting walk, as you will find a colourful Hindu temple on every corner!

The easiest ways to get to the Maratha Palace are by:

  • Auto-rickshaw: You will find these nearly everywhere in Thanjavur. I would recommend downloading the Ola app if you take the rickshaw, though. It works just like Uber and this way, you will get a fair price immediately. Rickshaw drivers tend to charge foreigners ten times the local price, and they’re not easy to negotiate with.
  • Scooter: There are places where you can rent a scooter in Thanjavur. This is the most flexible way to get around the city and its surroundings.
  • Local bus: The Maratha Palace is just 900 m (0,56 mi) from the Thanjavur Old Bus Stand. Taking the local bus is the cheapest way to get there.
  • Private car: Although this is the most comfortable way to get around, hiring a private car or a taxi is also the most expensive one.

Other things to do in Thanjavur

Here are some other great things to do in Thanjavur. Make sure not to miss the Brihadisvara Temple in particular, it’s astonishing!

  • Brihadisvara Temple: This magnificent Hindu temple is a beautiful example of Chola architecture. It was built in the 11th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Brihadisvara Temple is Thanjavur’s most famous tourist attraction.
  • Other temples: One of my favourite things to do in Thanjavur was to explore its streets and admire all of its temples. The streets of this city are full of colourful Hindu Kovils with beautiful details.
  • Bharatanatyam dance performance: This traditional Indian classical dance was born in Thanjavur and is performed in temples. As there’s no specific place to go, you will have to ask around to see if there’s a performance while you’re there.

Maratha Palace ( Aranmanai ) in Thanjavur: Final thoughts

I have to admit that I don’t think the Maratha Palace is the most spectacular palace to visit in India. However, it’s a great place to see if you have some time left in Thanjavur after visiting the Brihadisvara Temple .

This being said, I did love all the colours and beautiful details at this palace complex, and I loved learning more about its history too. The Mahratta Darbar Hall is a place I particularly loved visiting, as it’s stunning.

All in all, if you’re a history buff, then the Maratha Palace is a place you cannot miss on a visit to Thanjavur!

Highway signboard damaged by encroaching food joints leave commuters in a spot

This signboard leaves several vehicle users, confused on which route to take further to reach places like Thanjavur and Nagapattinam.

TIRUCHY: The inconvenience caused to pedestrians aside, the shops and food joints encroaching upon the walkway along Thanjavur Road at Palpannai in the city are forcing many a vehicle user to stop and ask for directions as they blame them for damaging a crucial signboard at the spot that guided them to various cities.

While the national highways body had installed the signboard on the east side of Palpannai, the fire from stoves used by a few food joints that have encroached upon the space has obscured the directions to the cities displayed on it. This leaves several vehicle users, particularly those from other districts, confused on which route to take further to reach places like Thanjavur and Nagapattinam.

This is besides the inconvenience pedestrians are put to as they walk amidst traffic on the road due to the advertisement boards that have taken over the walkway. Other spots along the road also witness a similar situation.

D Subramaniyan of Salem said, "I have passed the area two or three times to visit Big Temple in Thanjavur. I was confused as to which way to take once I reached Palpannai service road. Then I asked a stranger standing there for directions and left. Later, I saw a burnt board a short distance at the curve on the service road. Had I missed the road I would have been forced to travel an additional four kilometers before I could come back here. The damaged board should hence be replaced as it is a vital one for all motorists."

V Vellaiyammal who often uses the road said, "I am forced to walk on the road, amidst the traffic. During peak hours, there is no place to even walk. I have to cross with the fear of being run over. There is not even little space left for us on the pedestrian walkway. The highway should immediately clear it of the shops' encroachments like advertisement boards."

When contacted, a senior official from the Tiruchy wing of the national highways body assured to immediately inspect the spot and replace the signboard. The encroachments on the walkway will also be cleared, the official added.
