The 1975

The 1975 has announced the “Still… At Their Very Best” fall tour, the band’s biggest North American tour to date. The Matty Healy-led group will take their fifth album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” across the U.S. and Canada for the second time since its October 2022 release.

The tour will kick off Sept. 26 in Sacramento, Calif., and end Dec. 2 in Seattle.

The band had teased the tour on social media throughout the month, posting vague visuals and linking to an online registration form.

Popular on Variety

The tour evolved throughout its initial North American run, from altered setlists to surprise guest cameos from Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers. Healy made headlines for bringing fans onstage during “Robbers” and passionately kissing them.

Variety praised the band’s latest performance at Madison Square Garden , calling the concert a “captivating exposition from a band that embraces nearly every pop trope yet demands to be taken seriously.” The band will return to the famed New York City venue on Nov. 14.

A fan presale begins June 21 at 10 a.m. local time, while public tickets will go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. on the 1975’s website .

The 1975 announce 39-date North American tour

The massive still...at their very best tour features shows across the u.s. and canada, beginning in september of this year..

the 1975 tour what is it

The 1975 have announced a behemoth run of shows in the U.S. and Canada slated for this fall. The band's Still...at their very best tour kicks off on September 26 at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center, and will wrap up almost three whole months later at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena. In celebration, they've also released Episode 4 of their absurdist video series "A Theatrical Performance Of An Intimate Moment."

Still...at their very best is a continuation of the 1975's ongoing At Their Very Best tour, which has been marked by near-constant online discourse, mostly thanks to the antics of frontman Matty Healy. These include eating raw meat on stage, making out with fans, cameramen, and security guards, and — oh, yeah — dating Taylor Swift . These new shows promise an expanded production, but what that means is still anyone's guess.

The 1975 Announce 2022 Tour, Share Video for New Song “Happiness”: Watch

By Madison Bloom

The 1975

The 1975 have released the second single from their upcoming LP Being Funny in a Foreign Language and announced a North American tour (dubbed the At Their Very Best Tour). The new track is called “Happiness.” Check out the band’s Samuel Bradley –directed video below.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the 1975’s Matty Healy discussed his band’s new single:

“Happiness” is like… there’s literally loads of us in the room on that track. Locked eyes... doesn’t really have much structure. It came through like jamming. And we haven’t done that in like years. So we just wanted this record to be really like a captured moment and not be too constructed and even produced that much…. We did it in like a day or so. And it’s us having fun. And I think that there’s this real desire in art to see something remarkable with as little technology as possible.

In addition, Healy discussed working with Jack Antonoff on Being Funny in a Foreign Language :

I love Jack’s work, and those Lana [Del Rey] records, in particular, like, some of my favorite stuff. So we were talking about that. We became friends talking about production and what I was doing and what he was wanting to do and what I was wanting to do. And then I kind of just thought, “Well, this is like a really nice new energy.” I don’t… because we are so closed, me and George [Daniel], we’ve always been so closed. “Why don’t you like come down to the studio and see what happens?” And then he did. And, then, ever since, we were just great, great friends.

Healy continued:

He’s so good. What he does is identifies what an artist is really good at or where the truth is coming from. And it’s a bit like, if you think of like a great comedian, the language of like sense of humor, they can sense where the humor is in the situation. Jack’s like, he’s like me, you know what I mean? He’s like culture vulture, he’s like full of references. He knows his shit, man. He understands what artists need at any given moment. And it happened very, very naturally.  And I think that we were just feeling loads of stuff out. And all these things just kind of came together. Yeah, and me and Jack were just like talking about music and then those conversations, me, Jack, and George. And then those conversations became about a 1975 record that felt more live. And then I was a bit like, “Well, why are we talking about this? Why don’t we just do this?”

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is out October 14 via Dirty Hit . The album title was first teased in postcards to fans back in June. The 1975 recorded the new record at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England, as well as Electric Lady Studios in New York.

The new LP follows the band’s 2020 full-length Notes on a Conditional Form , and includes lead single “ Part of the Band ,” which arrived last month with a video directed by Samuel Bradley . The song features vocals from Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner on the chorus.

The 1975 have kicked off their new ‘At Their Very Best’ tour in North America, where they debuted three new album tracks within an elaborate stage set-up.

The first appearance of their reworked live concert arrived at Uncasville’s Mohegan Sun Arena. The band began with songs from their fifth number-one album, ‘ Being Funny in a Foreign Language ’, which Dork’s 5-star review described as, “a brilliant edit of everything that came before, cast in the self-realisation and not-so-quiet confidence of just how good they can be”.

The 11-track LP was played in order, with ‘Looking for Somebody (To Love)’ swapping position with ‘Happiness’. ‘Wintering’ and ‘Human Too’ were replaced with ‘Roadkill’, ‘Fallingforyou’, and a piano rendition of ‘I Like America & America Likes Me’. The Connecticut performance offered the live debut of ‘ Being Funny in a Foreign Language ’s ‘The 1975’, ‘About You’, and ‘When We Are Together’.

The band went on to deliver 11 further hits from across their discography – the full setlist for The 1975 ’s Connecticut show reads as below:

Being Funny in a Foreign Language 1. The 1975 (Live debut) 2. Looking for Somebody (To Love) 3. Happiness 4. Part of the Band 5. Oh Caroline 6. I’m in Love With You 7. All I Need to Hear 8. Roadkill 9. Fallingforyou 10. I Like America & America Likes Me (BFIAFL Version) 11. About You (Live debut) 12. When We Are Together (Live debut)

The 1975 At Their Very Best 13. If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) 14. Chocolate 15. It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) 16. Paris 17. An Encounter 18. Robbers 19. Somebody Else 20. Love It If We Made It 21. The Sound 22. Sex 23. Give Yourself a Try

The 1975 will tour North America for the remainder of 2022, returning to the UK for their hometown headline shows in January 2023 – tickets are available here . They have also been confirmed as headliners for Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival next July.

The 1975 Spread ‘Happiness’ With New Single, U.S. Tour Dates

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The 1975 shared a little “Happiness” Wednesday with both the video for the latest single off the band’s upcoming album Being Funny in a Foreign Language ,  as well as new tour dates.

“It came through like jamming. And we haven’t done that in years,” frontman Matty Healy told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe following the track’s premiere.

“So we just wanted this record to be really like a captured moment and not be too constructed and even produced that much…we did it in like a day or so. And it’s us having fun. And I think that there’s this real desire in art to see something remarkable with as little technology as possible. Do you know what I mean?”

“Happiness” follows Being Funny in a Foreign Language ’s first single, “ Part of the Band “; the album itself arrives on Oct. 14. Speaking to Lowe, Healy revealed why the 1975 opted to team up with producer Jack Antonoff on the upcoming LP.

“I love Jack’s work, and those Lana [Del Rey] records in particular, like some of my favorite stuff. So we were talking about that. We became friends talking about production and what I was doing and what he was wanting to do and what I was wanting to do,” he said.

“And then I kind of just thought, ‘well, this is like a really nice new energy.’ I don’t… Because we are so closed, me and George [Daniel, drummer], we’ve always been so closed. ‘Why don’t you like come down to the studio and see what happens?’ And then he did. And then, ever since, we were just great, great friends. And Jesus, man, I think that guy has a reputation for being busy, but I can tell you, he’s just good. He’s so good. What he does is identifies what an artist is really good at or where the truth is coming from. And it’s a bit like, if you think of like a great comedian, the language of like sense of humor, they can sense where the humor is in the situation.”

Billy Connolly in Big Banana Feet.

Dawn of the Big Yin: rediscovered film shows Billy Connolly on the road to comedy glory

The 1975 tour documentary Big Banana Feet captures a comic growing into his extraordinary talents – and adjusting to unprecedented fame

I n an age where our every selfie, photogenic breakfast and “thing I’m ashamed to admit” is preserved eternally online, it’s a shock to recall that actual art was once disposable – and prone to getting lost. Big Banana Feet , a documentary chronicling the Irish leg of Billy Connolly ’s 1975 UK tour, was consigned more or less to oblivion when its distributor later went bust, and director Murray Grigor left his own personal copy with a friend in the US, never to be seen again. Until now: the film was rediscovered four years ago in an archive at the University of California, and is being re-released by the BFI in a lovingly restored print.

It’s quite the time capsule, with its endless fag-smoking and a backstage sequence – oh, the glamour! – featuring Belfast tea ladies and their slow-pouring pot of tea. It’s also an absorbing portrait of Britain’s most influential comic as he teeters on the brink of megastardom. Inspired, says Grigor, by DA Pennebaker’s film of Bob Dylan’s 1965 UK tour, Don’t Look Back , it follows the Glaswegian on what was then (shortly after his famous 1975 Parkinson appearance) the biggest domestic tour ever undertaken by a solo artist, as he performs first in Dublin then in Belfast. It’s gorgeous to see him here so young and full of life, palpably a people’s person – chewing the fat with squaddies, the support act, those tea ladies – even as he begins to withdraw, as you’d have to, from the growing celebrity clamour.

The Belfast gigs are particularly noteworthy, because the city was a dangerous one to visit at the time. Members of a touring cabaret band had been killed in an attack by the UVF months previously. Major stars had cancelled the Northern Ireland leg of their tours. Connolly’s insistence that these gigs go ahead was a kind of cultural lifeline for the province, beating a path where others could follow.

You can watch Big Banana Feet for the socio-politics, then, and find it fascinating. But you can watch it for the comedy, too – or for the moments where they meet. At one point, a Belfast audience member hands Connolly a red rose. He accepts with gratitude – then mimes the explosion that would ensue (“boooom!”) if the rose somehow concealed a bomb. A risky gag – but not as risky as had he performed his anti-army song Sergeant, Where’s Mine in Belfast, which, mid-gig, he opts not to do. I’m not here to remind them of the Troubles, Connolly later argues, but to make them laugh.

But not just make them laugh. One of the attractions of the documentary is that it finds Connolly at a pivotal moment of self-definition. We see several interviews with journalists, trying to pin down the Big Yin phenomenon as it forms. One marvels – a sign of the times, this – that “you don’t even have an exciting stage name, you sound like the boy next door”. Others oblige Connolly to defend the vulgarity that supposedly characterises his routine about swearing on TV (still a novel idea in 1975), or his song toying with the delights of the Four-Letter Word. It’s a plus ça change moment as Connolly – like many a comic today – advises that people who might be offended should simply stay away.

Then another journo pitches in: “Are you a comedian or an entertainer?” And Connolly doesn’t have a ready answer. Both? Neither? “A comic singer,” he goes for, if only to get the guy off his back. I love that he doesn’t know. This was a time before “standup comedy” had taken its current shape, and before everything was commodified and marketed to the point of calcification. Connolly clearly didn’t feel the modern pressure to refine his brand, and onstage, he did what he liked: politics and ridiculous fruit footwear, soulful ballads like Sergeant, Where’s Mine and standup about farting, all in the same show. Showing us something special in genesis, back when touring comedy was barely a thing, Big Banana Feet is a great rediscovery.

Big Banana Feet is released by the BFI in selected cinemas in the UK and Ireland from 10 May and on DVD/Blu-ray from 20 May

Fans spot subtle Matty Healy reference in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour performance of scathing ‘TTPD’ song

Matty Healy

Fans believe Taylor Swift all but confirmed Matty Healy is, in fact, “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

On Thursday, Swift kicked off the European leg of her Eras Tour in Paris, introducing an entirely new portion of the show dedicated to “The Tortured Poets Department,” which dropped last month.

While the Grammy winner sang “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” — which is rumored to be about The 1975 frontman — eagle-eyed Swifties noticed her choreography bared striking similarities to Healy’s own on-stage theatrics.

Taylor Swift

As Swift belted the bridge, she began to march in place before saluting the crowd — a move Healy often does while performing “Love It If We Made It.”

“Taylor Swift marching during the smallest man who ever lived at the Eras concert in Paris and Matty Healy marching in love it if we made it,” one fan wrote on X alongside a side-by-side of the two shows.

The user also pointed out that the “lighting” and “colors” used in Swift’s performance were eerily similar to The 1975’s set design.

“Am I allowed to be ‘Taylor Swift marching with a marching band to ‘The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived’ to directly make fun of Matty Healey’ level of petty or no?” another fan sarcastically asked.

While Swift and Healy were first linked over a decade ago, they never publicly dated until last year — shortly after the “Cruel Summer” singer’s split from Joe Alwyn, 33.

However, the duo was only together for about a month following backlash over the “About You” singer’s many controversies .

The “Karma” hitmaker, 34, seemingly addressed people’s negative opinions about her dating Healy in “But Daddy I Love Him,” which she also performed for the first time Thursday night.

In the hit track, Swift sings about being chastised for being with someone  she loves.

Although Swifties have pinpointed a few other songs from “TTPD” they believe are about Healy, the rocker recently told paparazzi that he hadn’t listened to the new album.

“I haven’t really listened to that much of it but I’m sure it’s good,” the English singer-songwriter, 35, said when asked about the “diss” tracks about him.

Matty Healy

However, an insider later told Us Weekly that Healy wasn’t happy that his romance with Swift was back in the headlines thanks to the record-breaking album.

“Matty’s uncomfortable with the renewed attention on his relationship [with Taylor] — especially because he’s [with someone] new,” a source told the outlet.

Healy began dating model Gabbriette Bechtel in September 2023 — three months after he and Swift split.

The “Fortnight” singer and Travis Kelce went public with their romance that same month.

Matty Healy Is 'Tuning Out the Noise' After Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets Department' Release: Source (Exclusive)

The 1975 frontman remains focused on his band following Swift's double album drop last month

The past stays in the rearview mirror for Matty Healy .

The 1975 frontman is "tuning out the noise" amid renewed interest in his former relationship with Taylor Swift following her latest release, The Tortured Poets Department , a source tells PEOPLE.

Though fans have speculated Healy, 35, is the subject of a number of songs on the pop superstar's new album, Swift, 34, does not explicitly mention him by name.

The British musician remains focused on his band — which wrapped their Still ... at Their Very Best tour in March — as they begin writing for the follow-up to 2022's critically acclaimed Being Funny in a Foreign Language .

Healy has made one comment on Swift's double album publicly — after being approached by paparazzi late last month and asked how he'd "rate" his "Taylor diss track" as compared to others, he questioned, "My diss track? Oh!" then laughed and replied, "I haven't really listened to that much of it, but I'm sure it's good."

While the Grammy winner doesn’t name-check Healy on TTPD , a number of songs on the record seem to reference the star, whom Swift  dated for several months  in the spring of 2023, nearly a decade after they first sparked romance rumors.

Healy's aunt Debbie Dedes previously said she didn't think the musician would be bothered by Swift's songs.

“She writes about all her relationships, doesn't she? I don't think it will come as a shock to him at all,” Dedes told The Daily Mail of her nephew. “He's very happy in his new relationship so I'm sure he will be focusing on that.”

Healy has been dating model and Instagram chef  Gabbriette Bechtel since September 2023.

Swift initially met the "Happiness" singer in 2014 and enjoyed what Healy has called a "flirtation," but didn't publicly strike up a romance until years later. In 2022, Healy confirmed his band worked with her on her 10th studio album  Midnights , though their work was never released. Then, in January 2023, she performed during a guest spot at a 1975 concert in London.

By May, Healy used a break from his own tour to enjoy Swift's Eras concert in Nashville. Throughout the month, the two were spotted out on date nights and working together at Electric Lady Studios.

"It was a good time and ran its course," another insider told PEOPLE last year.

Every Subtle Reference Taylor Swift Made to Matty Healy During the ‘TTPD’ Section of ‘The Eras Tour’

Swifties Think Taylor Swift Subtly Referenced Matty Healy During the TTPD Section of The Eras Tour

Swifties are picking up on some potential Matty Healy Easter eggs in Taylor Swift ’s The Tortured Poets Department set during the European leg of her Eras Tour .

Swift took the stage for the first time since TTPD dropped on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. In addition to giving TTPD its own era, she also changed up her wardrobe and rearranged her setlist to make room for her new songs .

The singer performed several songs from TTPD for the first time, including “But Daddy I Love Him,” “So High School,” “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me,” “Down Bad,” “Fortnight,” “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”

When Swift released TTPD in April, fans were surprised that most of the album was seemingly about Healy rather than Swift’s ex Joe Alwyn , whom she dated for six years. (Swift and Healy have been connected since 2014 but had a short-lived romance in June 2023 following her breakup from Alwyn.)

As Swift rocked the stage for the TTPD segment, many fans noticed right away that there were several potential homages to the 1975 frontman.

The Infamous March and Salute

While performing “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” which is rumored to be about Healy, Swift seemingly shaded her ex by performing one of his go-to bits. Healy famously marches and salutes the crowd at his concerts whenever he sings “Love It If We Made It.”

As Swift belted the ballad, she dramatically marched down the stage and saluted the audience as she completed her walk. Fans were quick to pick up on the possible dig.

“I immediately caught that. Such a DIRECT call out. He does it every performance of [‘Love It If We Made It’],” one user commented on a TikTok clip of footage from the concert.

Carrying a Lifeless Frame

Swift dramatically ends “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” by being carried away by two of her dancers. They gently place Swift on a couch as she gears up her next number.

The choreography is similar to Healy’s onstage scene when he is also carried by a man in a coat to a sofa.

Self-Touching

During the choreography for “So High School,” which is seemingly about Swift’s current boyfriend , Travis Kelce , Swift is sitting around with her dancers. When she gets to the line, “Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto,” she lightly rubs her hand down her chest, mimicking what Healy has done during his live shows.

Film Review: Billy Connolly's 1975 Irish tour sees comedian at his peak

Big Banana Feet (New Restoration) Billy Connolly. Capturing 'The Big Yin' on and off stage during his 1975 tour of Ireland

  • Billy Connolly: Big Banana Feet
  • (Cinema release)

First released in 1977, and now restored to all its grainy glory, Big Banana Feet (12A) centres on Billy Connolly’s live performances in Dublin and Belfast in 1976, shortly after the former folk musician had exploded onto the UK comedy circuit.

He had ‘a duty to go’ he tells a reporter who asks why he has travelled to Ireland during the Troubles, a not unexpected answer from a down-to-earth comedian whose persona seems to have changed very little during his 50-odd years in the public eye.

The on-stage material might seem a little crude by today’s standards — even if some of the funniest material is his fart-gag routine — but it’s the off-stage Connolly that is the most interesting aspect of this film.

Swarmed by fans and reporters before and after shows, unfailingly polite to those who bring him a constant stream of very un-rock-‘n’-roll cups of tea, delivering off-the-cuff quips and one-liners to anyone who will listen, Connolly is an infectiously funny presence, even for those fans who will likely have heard all the gags before.
